Also in the programme. The former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin chooses not to give evidence in a dramatic final day of testimony in the George Floyd Murder trial. And the food fight over a childrens birthday cake. M s are going to court over colin the caterpillar and the aldi knock off. We will get an early adjudication from celebrityjudge rob rinder. Hello, im Laura Trevelyan In Washington, Christian Fraser is in london. When President Biden talked on the phone to President Putin two days ago, he warned him that the us was going to respond to russias provocations from Cyber Hacking to Election Interference. Us officials said the retaliation would be seen and unseen. Well today we got the seen part of it. In the next half hour the president will set out new sanctions that blacklist russian companies, make it harder for moscow to borrow money and the us is expelling ten Russian Diplomats accused of spying. The Biden Administration says the sanctions are retaliation for moscows destabilizing international actions. Among the violations russias meddling in the 2020 election. The Solar Winds Hack on nine federal agencies last year that affected at least 100 private companies. The massing of Russian Troops near the ukrainian border. And the bounty that was paid for attacks on us soldiers in afghanistan. We are imposing costs on what we feel are unacceptable actions by the Russian Government. Some of these are done in coordination with the European Partners and allies in the past. The nations top intelligence officials have been testifying today before the house intelligence committe on a range of threats facing the United States. Raja krishnamoorthi is a democratic us congressman who sits on that committee and hejoins us from washington. Thank you for speaking with this after hearing the evidence today. These are significant financial sanctions but the question is, why would these sanctions work in previous rounds of sanctions have not. ~ . ,. , not. Where the differences is that, there has actually not. Where the differences is that, there has actually been not. Where the differences is that, there has actually been many there has actually been many infractions that have occurred without any response whatsoever from the donald trump administration. I think right now, were trying to make it clear that in my opinion that there needs to be a price paid for the various infractions ranging from Election Interference to what is happened with regards to the Solar Winds Hack and so forth. I think its its a very strong message that this particular administration is likely to be the same as the prior one. Same as the prior one. Theres already been same as the prior one. Theres already been some same as the prior one. Theres already been some reaction i same as the prior one. Theres i already been some reaction from same as the prior one. Theres already been some reaction from the kremlin, theyre talking about exercises and the black sea, limiting transport and traffic in the black sea area, theyre talking about not coming to a meeting with joe biden that is been scheduled. Did you get any idea today from the Committee Hearing how this might escalate . ~ ~ escalate . Well, i think quite frankly that escalate . Well, i think quite frankly that theres escalate . Well, i think quite frankly that theres been escalate . Well, i think quite frankly that theres been a i escalate . Well, i think quite i frankly that theres been a little bit of an assumption until now list on the russians part that we are practically a doormat we have acted like that over the last four years. And so, what were doing now is recalibrating the situation and basically showing that there is a price that is going to be paid for further incursion, so actually we are restoring some of the in equilibrium in our relationship as opposed to escalating. find equilibrium in our relationship as opposed to escalating. Opposed to escalating. And us officials are opposed to escalating. And us officials are seeing opposed to escalating. And us officials are seeing some opposed to escalating. And us officials are seeing some of i opposed to escalating. And us| officials are seeing some of the actions against russia are going to be unseen, presumably Cyber Attacks that we might never know about. I cannot speak about classified information, we did hear a classified hearing following the open hearing, but what i can say is that our capabilities are robust and i think the new administration will not be fearful about using this capabilities where necessary. You have been hearing about the global threat, do you worry about the possibility of china and russia working together against us interests . Working together against us interests . ~ ~. , interests . Well, i think that the situation between interests . Well, i think that the situation between china interests . Well, i think that the situation between china and i interests . Well, i think that the i situation between china and russia obviously, it goes from cold to hot, to court to hot overtime. I dont know how thats going to proceed. I think we just lost the congressman. They pose a great risk to our National Security and so, we have to deal with them separately for sure. It is interesting when you see the flights that the chinese have had over taiwan, what is going on to the ukrainian border, you have a new administration In Washington and clearly, the two royal powers are testing the white house to see with the response will be. I testing the white house to see with the response will be. The response will be. I thinkjoe Bidens Administration the response will be. I thinkjoe Bidens Administration is the response will be. I thinkjoe Bidens Administration is going | the response will be. I thinkjoe i Bidens Administration is going to biden S Administration is going to pass any test with regards to china and russia. In the most important piece of this, if i might say is that we have to work with our allies, whether it be the uk or other european or asian partners, i think the Indo Pacific Region with india, australia, the United States is very important as well. But that is very important as well. But that is a set of alliances that unfortunately have atrophied over the last four years which are now going to be bolstered by thejoe Biden Administration and that will also test russia and china as well. Thank you very much indeed for coming to talk to us. Also today Britains Foreign Office has summoned russias ambassador to express its concern about malign behaviour by kremlin and express the uk s support for biden s sanctions how real is the threat to the ukraine and what with the response be if russian tanks did roll into the region, they have ordered 40,000 troops to the western border and there a similar number in crimea and we ve seen pictures of tanks and all manners of Military Hardware moving towards the region. Moscow said this is a Military Drill and anything other than that is western propaganda. They say they re there to provoke and destabilise. There have been sporadic outbreaks when there was annexed by Russia Ukraine says the troops are there to provoke and destabilise. There have been sporadic outbreaks of fighting since 2014 when crimea was annexed by russia and separatist rebels took control of the ukrainian regions of luhansk and donetsk. The town of kurakhove is in donetsk, our Correspondentjonah Fisher has been filming with the ukrainian troops on the front line. Yeah, this is another aspect of this conflict between the ukraine and russia. There s a part of the black sea which is accessible only through a narrow straight which Russia Controls and normally, when conditions are better, the ukraine and russia are both allowed to use that narrow straight to access the sea. Ukraine has two ports in there which. , ,. , which. You presume there is an alert and nervousness which. You presume there is an alert and nervousness on which. You presume there is an alert and nervousness on the i which. You presume there is an | alert and nervousness on the front line. When you speak, what do they think is going to happen . The answer we hurt the most think is going to happen . The answer we hurt the most is think is going to happen . The answer we hurt the most is that think is going to happen . The answer we hurt the most is that they think is going to happen . The answer we hurt the most is that they simply l we hurt the most is that they simply do not know, they re following a very closely mixing the video coming from the russian side of a very large number of vehicles and personnel is being deployed on the russian side of the border and i think many that we spoke to today think many that we spoke to today think something was going to happen but there are also those who see this as a test that russia is trying to somehow kick start the political process here in the ukraine or negotiate a settlement to these so called republics that we have here in the ukraine and they ve come to nothing over the last six or seven years. So there is a line of thought that russia may somehow be attempting to pressure the ukraine into some sort of concessions or to these republics. It into some sort of concessions or to these republics. These republics. It would be fair to sa that these republics. It would be fair to say that the these republics. It would be fair to say that the ukrainians these republics. It would be fair to say that the ukrainians are these republics. It would be fair to say that the ukrainians are a i say that the ukrainians are a different prospect at this time because they re different to the ragtag army that faced the russians Backin Ragtag Army that faced the russians back in 2014 . That ragtag army that faced the russians back in 2014 . Back in 2014 . That is true. Theyve not their back in 2014 . That is true. Theyve got their act back in 2014 . That is true. Theyve got their act together back in 2014 . That is true. Theyve got their act together to back in 2014 . That is true. Theyve got their act together to a got their act together to a significant extent over the last six orseven significant extent over the last six or seven years with the help of nato in the help of western countries of come in and help them organise their military better. You may remember in 2014 and 2015, it was largely volunteer brigades that came to the Eastern Ukraine to try and stop the territory being lost. There will not be the case this time around but i don t think anyone is under any illusions here. If russia really was to launch a full scale invasion, and the ukraine, they would put as many as i hundred 10,000 troops on the border, well, it would be very difficult, even for this Reorganised Modernised Ukrainian Army to train the system for very long. If you add everyone together in the area, you get to watch 50,000 they simply do not have the level of equipment and sophistication that the russians have. So, people are pretty realistic of russia did go forward, it will be very difficult for the ukraine. It has been a dramatic final day of testimony in the trial of Derek Chauvin. The former Police Officer who is charged with the murder of george floyd told the judge this morning, he was invoking his 5th Amendment rights and would not be taking the stand to defend himself. After a lengthy meeting, we had further discussion . Further discussion . Right. And if ou made further discussion . Right. And if you made a further discussion . Right. You might have watched an Expert Witness for the defence yesterday suggest that mr floyd, who was on the floor for 9 minutes, and close to a car exhaust, might have died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning. Today, the prosecution produced new evidence that that was not the case. His blood levels were perfectly normal. In the end the judge decided the medical report, which had not been disclosed to the defence, could not be shown to the jury. But in recalling their 0wn Expert Witness the prosecution were able to successfully rebut those earlier claims. Mary moriarty is former Chief Public Defender in Hennepin County where the trial is taking place she joins us from minneapolis thank you for being with us. What is the significance of Derek Chauvin pleading the fifth and not giving evidence it is on trial . 50. Pleading the fifth and not giving evidence it is on trial . Evidence it is on trial . So, and this country. Evidence it is on trial . So, and this country, you evidence it is on trial . So, and this country, you have evidence it is on trial . So, and this country, you have a i evidence it is on trial . So, and this country, you have a right. Evidence it is on trial . So, and. This country, you have a right to not testify in your trial and the prosecution can t say anything about that. They cannot say to the jury, if it was really innocent, he would ve testified. And so, the jury will not be hearing from him, they will not be hearing from him, they will not be hearing from him, they will not know what he was thinking or why he did what he did and human beings want to hear both sides of the story. But they will be told by the story. But they will be told by the judge that they cannot hold that against and that that is his constitutional right. There will also be told by the judge that they need to decide whether or not the state is presented enough evidence to prove Derek Chauvin guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I m sure there arejurors a reasonable doubt. I m sure there are jurors who want to hear what he had to say, but the judge will instruct them that they may not consider that, thereafterjust consider that, thereafterjust consider the evidence that they have heard. ,. , heard. So, this is the end of the evidence and heard. So, this is the end of the evidence and now heard. So, this is the end of the evidence and now we heard. So, this is the end of the evidence and now we move i heard. So, this is the end of the evidence and now we move to i heard. So, this is the end of the i evidence and now we move to the Closing Arguments next week. What are you expecting to hear from the defence and the Closing Argument . I5 defence and the Closing Argument . I3 actually one step happening right now. Both sides submitted instructions and that is the law that the judge is going to tell the jury that the judge is going to tell the jury to apply. And they re arguing right now as to whether the appropriate instructions because each site ask for something very different. 0n each site ask for something very different. On monday, the state, the prosecution will present its Closing Argument and i would expect they will be using timelines and still shots and video from the scene to demonstrate how long this went on in the various times that Derek Chauvin had an opportunity to do Something Different than he did and i also expect the state to be trying to simplify all of the medical evidence thatis simplify all of the medical evidence that is come in. We heard from a cardiologist, toxicologist of two medical examiners and so, they will need to put all that together and remind the jurors of what is been said because we know the defence is going to try to poke holes in it and say there s reasonable doubt here. So, the state really needs to simplify the testimony so it s very understandable for the jurors. Irate understandable for the urors. We heard understandable for the jurors. We heard about the cycle of a trial, the ebb and flow. It cannot be lost on the jury today that there were witnesses brought back and there were rebuttals. Does that stick in a juries mind when they come to their deliberations . I juries mind when they come to their deliberations . Deliberations . I think it was a good o ortuni deliberations . I think it was a Good Opportunity to deliberations . I think it was a Good Opportunity to have deliberations . I think it was a Good Opportunity to have the deliberations . I think it was a Good Opportunity to have the Doctor Deliberations . I think it was a good l opportunity to have the doctor come back briefly. Use are the best Expert Witnesses that i have seen you did a really effective job and he was only there for a short period of time and what he did was tell the jurors that he completely disagreed with what the doctor, the medical examiner and defence called, he completely disagreed with the idea of Carbon Monoxide poisoning playing any role in george floyd s death. So lease they can probably eliminate that as an option. I think it was a great wave of the state to end with the witness that i m guessing the jurors really liked. Just the witness that im guessing the jurors really liked. Just separately in the case jurors really liked. Just separately in the case of jurors really liked. Just separately in the case of another jurors really liked. Just separately in the case of another alleged i in the case of another alleged Police Shooting. Tonight in chicago, video released by the civilian officer of Police Accountability appears to show a 13 year old boy who raises his handsjust before appears to show a 13 year old boy who raises his hands just before a chicago Police Officer fatally shoots him. What is your reaction to this latest example of alleged Police Violence against civilians . We just had another Police Shooting in brooklyn centre, which is a suburb close to minneapolis and that was a shooting where an officer claims that she was trying to shoot a black man with a stun gun after a stop for expired tabs which is a very minor offence here. And this young man and chicago was 13 years old, just seems to be one after another, after another is a great deal of unrest here and there ve up and i know those protests will continue and i know the person that killed Daunte Wright has been charged today with manslaughter. It is just tragic and it is just traumatising to people and her black community particularly because they do not know what they have to avoid doing to avoid being shot by the police. So, Iam Hopefulthis Doing to avoid being shot by the police. So, iam hopeful this will bring about conversations about how police, we need to do things differently not only here but in this country. The goal of america s Coronavirus Vaccination Effort is to innoculate everyone including those who are undocumented. But reaching this group isn t easy they are wary of authority, and naturally they are worried about being deported. Yet it s those very people who are so often the Essential Workers in america s Service Economy and they were hit really hard by the virus. I ve been to a church in brooklyn, new york, where a drive is underway to vaccinate the undocumented. Sunday morning in church, instead of worship, it is time for vaccinations. The people you re a mostly undocumented, doing the essential work of new york city on construction sites, cleaning homes. Stop by Reverend Ruiz and said to deal with so many warning families in this past year and as they conduct the worship on sunday, they have a new enemy to deal with, the disinformation and fear of the vaccine that he is sitting in his congregation. The former sitting in his congregation. Iia former administration sitting in his congregation. Tia former administration did sitting in his congregation. Ti2 former administration did a good job in terms of Injecting Fear in peoples minds and hearts. We are still dealing with that, we re still dealing with the misinformation that came from those elements of power. The city needs to invest locally on education and proper outreach. A vital location where those most at risk for the virus feel safe enough to get a vaccine. Amazing how much trust there is in new york city in their churches. Every country has an instantly recognisable food. Italian pizza, the new york hotdog, the Yorkshire Pudding in the uk maybe. But times have changed over the Pond Christian since i was holding my kids Birthday Parties and i hear it s now colin the caterpillar who s the king of birthday cakes. People are going to get confused about the origin of the goods. I m a bit troubled by this not because you will be aware that other big retailers have sold cecil, curly and clive accountability. I think you have an uphill legal battle. But what they definitely have is millions of pounds with the free publicity. So, it is a win win. Ii publicity. So, it is a win win. It seems to me that m s, they should be confident in the standard of their cakes and there are other cakes out there which look like caterpillars to that extent, i doubt there s going to be much confusion and therefore, i am afraid that i ll go with cuthbert. Iflake that ill go with cuthbert. Cake wars hello there. It s turning chilly quickly this evening, but it was a fine spring day for much of the country. The sun was certainly out across Western Scotland, and it was in the West Of Scotland that we saw highest the temperatures, around 15 celsius. Quite a bit cooler, though, in the north easterly breeze for the southeast of england and east anglia, where we saw more cloud and some showers. Those showers having drifted down towards hampshire will fade away overnight, and it s going to turn dry and clear in most areas. There will be some mist and fog patches forming across parts of the southeast later on in the night. Quite a widespread frost again, temperatures similar to where we had them last night, maybe a little bit milder, though across Northern Ireland and the northWest Of Scotland, where we ve got that southerly breeze that ll continue into tomorrow. Mist and fog patches will clear fairly readily, i think i m in the morning. A sunny start for most, then the cloud will tend to bubble up and spread out a bit in land across the uk. So the best of the sunshine around coastal areas. Away from the northWest Of Scotland, where we ve got some rain arriving in the Western Isles. Otherwise, it s a dry day, similar temperatures to today could make 15 celsius through the central belt of scotland and around the marie firth. But the Pollen Levels are going to be high. We re in the peak of the tree pollen season, and levels will be higher across east anglia and the southeast than they were today because it ll be dry with some sunshine. High pressure is in charge of our weather as we head into the weekend. It s keeping these Weather Fronts at bay. 0vernight, any rain in the northWest Of Scotland will fade away. And it looks like saturday will be a dry day. Again, breezy towards Western Scotland and Northern Ireland. The sunshine may turn a bit hazy. For many parts of the uk, it s going to be dry with some lengthy spells of sunshine and light winds, too. And temperatures may be peaking at 14 15 celsius again, and that s near normal for this time of year. As we head into the second half of the weekend, we start to see these Weather Fronts pushing further into the uk from Off The Atlantic that means more cloud for scotland and Northern Ireland on sunday, and perhaps some Patchy Light Rain in the northWest Of Scotland, Western Parts of Northern Ireland. Some of the cloud could push into england and wales. It looks dry here, though, the Sunnier Skies towards Eastern Parts of england and through the midlands. And temperatures will be higher here so those temperatures are finally rising as we lose the breeze from off the north sea, 15 16 celsius. As we head into next week, there s a lot of dry weather still, and it should be turning in most areas a little bit warmer, as well. You re watching bbc news with me Laura Trevelyan In Washington, Christian Fraser is in london. Our top stories. The us unveils a salvo of sanctions against russia. We see in these thanks for being with us. We see in these new sanctions at the white house is trying to target the ability of russia to actually borrow money. Do you see that as a significant ramping up of the turning of the screw . It significant ramping up of the turning of the screw . Significant ramping up of the turning of the screw . It is, because u. Turning of the screw . It is, because u until turning of the screw . It is, because up until now turning of the screw . It is, because up until now this turning of the screw . It is, because up until now this specific turning of the screw . It is, because up until now this specific sanction l up until now this specific sanction has been up until now this specific sanction has been much discussed In Washington to include its inclusion in various washington to include its inclusion in various bills that congress has written in various bills that congress has written asking the treasury to investigate and report on it. So they investigate and report on it. So they werent daring enough to actualty they werent daring enough to actually put it into law and make the government do it. And the administration, the Executive Branch also wasnt administration, the Executive Branch also wasnt willing to take that step also wasnt willing to take that step it also wasnt willing to take that step it is also wasnt willing to take that step. It is significant because ultimately even though Vladimir Putin ultimately even though Vladimir Putin has ultimately even though Vladimir Putin has a lot of foreign reserve which putin has a lot of foreign reserve which means he can provide money to service which means he can provide money to service debt which means he can provide money to service debt to his oligarchs, at some service debt to his oligarchs, at some point the money will run out. At some some point the money will run out. At some point there will be more pressure at some point there will be more pressure placed on that inner circle of oligarchs. It also shows a real ratcheting of oligarchs. It also shows a Real Ratcheting Up Of Natural Will on the part of Ratcheting Up of natural will on the part of the Ratcheting Up of natural will on the part of the United States and our allies part of the United States and our allies and part of the United States and our allies and partners. Because we are basically allies and partners. We are keeping an eye on the pictures from the white house we will take you there Whenjoe Biden appears. Today democrats in the house and Senate Introduced a bill that would expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court from nine to thirteen justices. Republicans have condemned the idea, saying it s Court Packing. And even Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she won t support it. But for those who do support the measure, it s a chance to bring balance back to a conservative leaning court. That s after former President Trump was able to add three justices of his own in just four years. These four new seats, to be filled by pres biden, will reconstitute the us Supreme Court the bench will then rightly reflect the values of the majority of the American People on whose behalf they serve. Expanding the court is constitutional, congress has done it before, and Congress Must do it again. Senate Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnell was quick to dismiss the bill. He tweeted that. Joining us to discuss is senior north america reporter anthony zurcher. It is an extremely consensus area. Conservative is deeply opposed to what is called Court Packing what how do you see it developing . The first thing you mentioned that nancy pelosi first thing you mentioned that nancy pelosi has first thing you mentioned that nancy pelosi has come out against this bill. Pelosi has come out against this hilt thats pelosi has come out against this bill. Thats the only thing you have to remember out of today. That as lon to remember out of today. That as long as to remember out of today. That as long as nancy pelosi is on board its not long as nancy pelosi is on board its not going anywhere. If You Rememberjoe Bidenjust recently remember joe biden just recently formed remember joe biden just recently formed A Rememberjoe Bidenjust recently formed a commission that he promised to create formed a commission that he promised to create during the president ial campaign to look into a wider range of reforms campaign to look into a wider range of reforms in the judiciary. It was essentially of reforms in the judiciary. It was essentially a way for him to dodge being essentially a way for him to dodge being pushed on expanding the Supreme Court when he was being denied Supreme Court when he was being denied campaigning because this is a bil denied campaigning because this is a big issue denied campaigning because this is a big issue for progressives. I think the feeling at least among leadership in congress and joe biden in the leadership in congress and joe biden in the white house is that they dont in the white house is that they dont want to tackle this issue right dont want to tackle this issue right now dont want to tackle this issue right now. It is too controversial because right now. It is too controversial because the Republican Base to riled up. Particular supporters of limiting up. Particular supporters of limiting Abortion Rights they see an expansion limiting Abortion Rights they see an expansion of the supporting court is rolling expansion of the supporting court is rolling back all the progress that they have made over the past few years they have made over the past few years as they have made over the past few years. As you mention, getting conservative justices seated on the supreme conservative justices seated on the Supreme Court. But conservative justices seated on the Supreme Court Supreme Court. But the president sa s its Supreme Court. But the president says its out Supreme Court. But the president says its out of Supreme Court. But the president says its out of whack. Supreme court. He has a l says it s out of whack. He has a point if you care about balance on the Supreme Court. I m sure most conservatives don t much. It is six 23 at the moment. It s not for two terms it s a lie. How does he remedy that situation when the chorus he has control of the white house and democrats have control of the house in the senate . It s a unique moment if they want to challenge that. It is. You can change the makeup of the supreme is. You can change the makeup of the Supreme Court based on a simple majority Supreme Court based on a simple Majority Vote in the house of the Senate Majority vote in the house of the senate in Majority Vote in the house of the senate. In fact the Supreme Court size has senate. In fact the Supreme Court size has changed a number of times over american history. It started with six over american history. It started with sixjustices, went out over american history. It started with six justices, went out to five, went with six justices, went out to five, went down with six justices, went out to five, went down to is much as ten in the 1860s went down to is much as ten in the 1860s and went down to is much as ten in the 1860s. And then back to nine again. If 1860s. And then back to nine again. If you 1860s. And then back to nine again. If you remember Franklin Delano roosevelt in the 1930s actually tried roosevelt in the 1930s actually tried to roosevelt in the 1930s actually tried to add six justices to the supreme tried to add six justices to the Supreme Court to try to balance the court Supreme Court to try to balance the court for Supreme Court to try to balance the court for him as well because it kept court for him as well because it kept striking down his new deal legislation. Particularly on the left, legislation. Particularly on the left, among progressives they view this as left, among progressives they view this as a left, among progressives they view this as a chance to do this. They also this as a chance to do this. They also look this as a chance to do this. They also look back at what the republicans did by holding that one anthony republicans did by holding that one Anthony Scalia seat open for pretty much Anthony Scalia seat open for pretty much all Anthony Scalia seat open for pretty much all of 2016. So barack obama could much all of 2016. So barack obama could not much all of 2016. So barack obama could not appoint a liberaljudge to the Supreme Court. Plus what donald trump the Supreme Court. Plus what donald trump did the Supreme Court. Plus what donald trump did breaking the filibuster and getting conservative justices on the court and getting conservative justices on the court. They see that as essentially Court Packing. This is a way to essentially Court Packing. This is a way to address what they see as those way to address what they see as those historic wrongs that republicans did just a couple years ao. Republicans did just a couple years ago but republicans did just a couple years ago. But the challenges that they need ago. But the challenges that they need 50 ago. But the challenges that they need 50 votes in the senate, they may not need 50 votes in the senate, they may not get it. Need 50 votes in the senate, they may not get it may not get it. Anthony, given all this bad feeling may not get it. Anthony, given all this bad feeling between may not get it. One idea floated by a close ally ofjoe biden ends in the senate was to ally ofjoe biden ends in the senate was to break the Infrastructure Bill into two was to break the Infrastructure Bill into two parts, use the bipartisan strategy into two parts, use the bipartisan strategy to pass the Building Bridges and roads and things like that that bridges and roads and things like that that are generally popular. And then use this process where they dont then use this process where they dont need then use this process where they dont need any republican support, they can dont need any republican support, they canjust get dont need any republican support, they can just get 50 democratic votes they can just get 50 democratic votes to they can just get 50 democratic votes to pass the more controversial, more expansive spending controversial, more expansive spending part of this package. But the generally dry theme is going to continue. Weve got High Pressure sitting across the uk keeping these Weather Fronts at bay for most of the country. Will be a cold start again on friday but a sunny start. Any mist and fog soon goes. Will see some patchy cloud bubbling up across england and wales in in land. Sunshine for scotland and Northern Ireland, the winds picking up in the far northwest. In the Western Isles with that Weather Front we are going to find some outbreaks of rain. Elsewhere is going to be dry and temperature similar to what we are seeing over the past few days. Typically ii to 13 celsius looked up those temperatures will fall quickly again in the evening as the Sun Goes Down and the cloud starts to melt away. And we will see that rain began to peter out a bet even across the northWestern Parts of scotland. Into the weekend in many places will remain dry. Temperatures beginning to lift a bit by day and also bite night. Weve still got Weather Fronts in the atlantic, the nextone starting to come in but its going to take all weekend to arrive in the northwest of the uk. Getting blocked off by that area of High Pressure. Another chilly start on saturday probably going to be starting sunny and for much of the day there will be some likely spells of sunshine. The breeze will pick up in the northwest, its a southerly breeze. The sunshine turns more hazy in Western Scotland and Northern Ireland but its dry on saturday. And temperatures could reach 14 or 15 degrees. Near normal for this time of year. Second half of the weekend we start to see these Weather Fronts just edging in from Off The Atlantic. More cloud on sunday for scotland and Northern Ireland, Patchy Light Rain for the northWest Of Scotland, Western Parts of Northern Ireland. Some of the cloud will move into england and wales but i think through the midlands, towards Eastern England there will be some likely spells of sunshine and here its getting a bit warmer. Temperatures up to 15 or even 16 degrees because we are losing the breeze from off the north sea put up its warming up over the weekend through many central and Eastern Parts of england. Heading into the beginning of next week ,those Weather Fronts are still on the scene, they are moving very slowly into the uk. But again mainly affecting scotland and Northern Ireland, more cloud here. Maybe some rain more widely but no great amount of rain. The winds are light in england and wales where it still dry, weve got the sunny skies towards the southeast once again where we are seeing the highest temperatures of 16, maybe even 17 degrees. That band of cloud and rain is going to move its way southwards very slowly. Its moving very slowly because there really arent many isobars, no wind to push it. And its weakening at the same time because youve got High Pressure building across that Weather Front. There is going to be less and less rain moving southward on tuesday. It only really going to be a bit damp over the hills of northwest england and wales. Still dry but some sunshine in the southeast. Thats where we got the highest temperatures. And its drying up across scotland and Northern Ireland. Brightening up here, a little bit cooler air, temperatures of ten to 12 degrees. So as we head into wednesday got that cooler air across more northern parts of the uk, its milder to the south. High pressure is building and from the atlantic as well. Theres that High Pressure and its actually can move right the way across the uk. It sits to the east of us instead of a cold northerly wind, and arctic air we are actually going to get a more south or southeasterly breeze. That means warmer air coming in from the south, coming in from Continental Europe with the really cold air, much to the east of the uk. So its going to warm up a bit at last. Temperatures are going to be rising during next week. If youre looking for rain though, it still looks like across much of the country with some sunshine at times. Tonight at ten more evidence of the toll on the nhs of the coronavirus pandemic, with waiting lists for other treatments reaching record highs. More than 4. 5 Million People in england have been affected, with even Heart Patients having operations postponed.
