Coming up in sportsday on Bbc News Channel, we will look back at the masters. How Hideki Matsuyama won his first major, and how he wants to be a Pioneer Forjapanese players. Good evening and welcome to the bbc news at six. Many of us have been enjoying the opportunity of getting out and doing a bit of shopping, going to pubs and cafes as major parts of the economy have opened up in england and wales. The government, though, has urged us all to act responsibly with this latest easing of lockdown. In england, restaurants and pubs can now serve people outdoors. All shops, hairdressers, beauty salons, gyms and Outdoor Attractions like zoos and theme parks can also reopen. Wales has also reopened shops, remaining pupils have gone back to school and restrictions on travelling across the border have eased. In scotland all students, except those who are shielding, have now returned to the classroom as have pupils in Northern Ireland. The stay at home order there is also ending and being replaced with guidance to stay local. Our business editor, simonjack, is in newquay. Now, that is not simonjack. We will come to him in a moment. Looks like youre having a great time in the sunshine with the drinkers, as well. Sunny but chilly. It is an undeniably beautiful site. Today accompanied by the very welcome sound of pills beginning to take overin sound of pills beginning to take over in the heart of the hospitality and tourism sector, so important to regions like this. There are big challenges like i had. We are nowhere near back to all systems go but this is seen as an important step, an important test, in what customers, businesses and the government hope is an irreversible road now to full recovery. Opening up after five long months of lockdown. Newquay zoo welcomed back customers on a day the government and business hopes to revive the Animal Spirits of an economy that has been slumbering. What does this feel like . Like weve just got out of prison laughter amazing. Weve got more freedom to see people now, and we dontjust feel so sort of cooped up, i really, so its definitely a big weight off the shoulders. The zoo was on the edge of bankruptcy last year and had to close its sister site in devon, so todays visitors were very welcome. Its hugely important for us. All the way through, weve had people in, weve had the animals to look after and we had no income to do that, so, having our guests back in today and having them here enjoying the zoo as well as bringing an income in, so that we can move forward again as a business, is fantastic. Great news, too, for a very hard hit hospitality sector. The Cool Outdoor Terrace got a very warm welcome from customers. Cheers first draft beer for six months its just going to be lovely to get some proper fresh air and a bit of freedom. Owner sally pickles said that it is an important first step on the road to recovery. The customers want us to be open, the staff are ready to come back, i think it is just something that we have to start, and just see what happens. We just hope that this is us open and in may, we will be fully open, and we will not be looking back. Todays clearly a massive moment for the National Mood and for the economy but remember 60 of Hospitality Venues have no outside space, and the ones that do may be running at a loss, so, whats next is key. The government says it doesnt want Covid Certificates or passports in everyday life, but Hospitality Chiefs worry they will be offered two different ways of losing money half empty venues without certificates, or full ones with them, but the additional cost and staff to check them. Too cold for an outdoor swimming, indoor pools and gyms can now reopen. Different sectors will see different demand. It has been a cautious return at this holiday park. 600 people arriving out of a normal 3000 at this time of year. But numbers are expected to grow. What we have seen this year throughout the last few months has been a huge amount of confidence from guests in the bookings and inquiries stage, where, either they have had their vaccine, they have got their backs in appointment through, and almost the first or second phone call they are making is to us to preserve their holiday. There is a lot of confidence out there. These are small steps back to normality, but an important test for consumers and businesses. The government will hope this will see this Wall Of Money Rolling in from those who have it, and the new chance to earn it, for those who havent. Simonjack, bbc news, newquay. In wales there were also queues on the high street as all shops can reopen but not gyms nor Outdoor Hospitality. 0ur wales correspondent Hywell Griffith is in cardiff now. We had a glimpse of year earlier, so more freedom but some restrictions remaining. Eco it is worth remembering wales was the first of the uk nations to shut out the shops before christmas. After a 16 week wait The City Centre was today wait The City Centre was today pretty busy. Not at the bars and restaurants near the castle. It will be two weeks before Outdoor Hospitality resumes here. It is worth noting that different parts of the uk are doing this at a different pace. Some of us had a haircut four weeks ago but still unable to have a drink. Anyone desperate for a pint can travel across the border into an english pub, with Travel Restrictions being lifted today, probably more significantly is that people can also visit wales, which will help the tourist industry. That depends on edinburgh travel. The Welsh Government for the last part of this unlocking process has been criticised for not having a road map. It has now published a set of dates for the next four weeks, people can meet indoors with another household from the start of april. Probably the most significant date is may the 6th, the date of the welsh Senate Elections when the people of wales get to vote on how they think this pandemic has been handled. Senedd. Lets take a look at the latest government figures. There were 3,568 new Coronavirus Infections recorded in the latest 24 hour period on average 2,744 new cases were reported per day in the last week. There are currently 2,862 patients in hospital with covid 19. 13 deaths were reported in the latest 24 hour period thats people who died within 28 days of a positive covid 19 test. On average in the past week, 3a deaths were announced each day. A total of 127,100 people have now died from coronavirus in the uk. As for vaccinations, more than 69,000 people have had their first dose of a Covid Vaccine in the latest 24 hour period, bringing the total to almost 32. 2 million. More than 189,000 people had their second jab meaning over 7. 6 Million People have now had both doses of the vaccine. Well, lets talk to our health editor, hugh pym. You just have to look out onto the high streets to see the increase in people out and about, but were still being urged to be cautious. Yes, fiona. Ithink yes, fiona. I think it will be some weeks before a Government Scientists and advisers reach any conclusions about the impact of the days easing of restrictions in different parts of restrictions in different parts of the uk, whether the virus has spread further or not, it takes time for virus cases to develop. That is why we have got these five week gaps between each stage of the road map, to allow for that assessment, and advice to the government about going to the next stage or not. 0fficials i speak to are reasonably confident so far. Looking back at the reopening of schools from late february and early march around the uk, there had been an expectation that cases might increase in different communities with more people going in and out of schools, and pupils or parents may be going back to work, but that hasnt happened. The latest survey by the office for National Statistics at the end of week last, covering the previous week when school terms continued before easter showed that in england and Northern Ireland there was a levelling off of cases but case rates continued falling in wales and scotland. We are now out of the School Holidays so you would expect cases to fall further from there. But, as you suggested, there is this feeling of people being out and about that, i think there is a bit of worry in government, the different governments, that people may feel a little complacent, feel like going back to the shops and Outdoor Hospitality means things are not things are back to normal, when they are not, the road maps are progressing and there is caution, certainly, before any firm conclusions are reached. Princes william and harry have paid tribute to their grandfather, the duke of edinburgh. William described Prince Philip as an extraordinary man from an extraordinary generation. Harry wrote he was my grandpa, master of the barbecue, and a legend of banter. Heres our royal correspondent nicholas witchell. He was there for them at their moment of greatest anguish, walking with a Young William and harry behind the coffin of her mother after her death in a road accident. And the bond between the grandfather and grandson is, on whom so many hopes rested was a deep one. In his statement william says he feels fortunate to have had his grandfathers enduring presence to guide him through good times and the hardest days. He recalled the special memories his own children will have of their great grandpa, coming to collect them in his carriage. Then william says this. Harry speaks of his grandfathers unparalleled devotion to the queen. Unparalleled devotion to the queen. He had been legend of banter, master of the barbecue and cheeky right again. Absorbingly intelligent, fiercely loyal, with a strong moral compass. The family of saskia jones said she would have wanted this process to be thorough, and it will last nine weeks. Tom symonds, bbc news at london guildhall. The veteran Liberal Democrat politician baroness williams has died at the age of 90. As Shirley Williams, she served in two labour cabinets in the 1970s and was instrumental in the introduction of comprehensive schools. In the 1980s she was one of the so called gang of four who founded the social democratic party. 0ur deputy Political Editor vicki young looks back at her life. We have been to all of the sugar refiners. Shirley williams was once tipped as a future Prime Minister, but she joked that her disorganised nature ruled her out. She was clear, though, she had the qualities needed for thejob. The Prime Minister has to get on with all kinds of people, without side, without snobbery, without aloofness. Politics was in her blood. Her mother was vera brittain, a famous novelist and feminist campaigner. Shirley williams joined the labour party in her teens and entered the House Of Commons in 1964. In a male dominated profession, she was often the only woman on the platform. She rose to cabinet level when labour returned to power in 1974, and later, as education secretary, began to replace Grammar Schools with the comprehensive system. But she and others became disillusioned as the labour party moved to the left. She urged colleagues to keep to the Centre Ground of british politics. Too many have done something which is known as keeping your head down. Well, the time has come when you better stick your head is up. Well, the time has come when you better stick your heads up. In 1981 williams dramatically walked away from labour, one of the so called gang of four who established the sdp, promising to break the mould of british politics. She won crosby in a famous by election. We are making a new beginning for britain. And a new vision for britain. The euphoria was short lived. She lost in the 1983 general election, and the sdp won just six seats. A sometimes acrimonious merger with the Liberal Party eventually created the Liberal Democrats. Now baroness williams, she held senior academic posts, but remained active in politics, becoming president of the party. She was passionately pro european. Using herfinal speech to the House Of Lords before retirement to make the case against brexit. Think very hard before allowing the United Kingdom to withdraw from what i believe to be its major duty to the world, and that is to deliver through the european union. Today colleagues recalled her wisdom and warmth. The feeling was that if Shirley Williams and i had been running the 83 election together, we would have done even better than we did. She was just a very popular person, much more popular than any of the rest of us. Shirley was a liberal lion. She was a trailblazer, particularly for women in politics. The liberal Democrat Family is very sad tonight. Baroness Shirley Williams, whos died at the age of 90. As weve been hearing to the relief on many people, in england, hairdressers are finally allowed to reopen. But quite a chill out there, it is nice when the sun is out, like it was in stirling, a bit of warmth to the Mid April Sunshine but out of the Mid April Sunshine but out of the sunshine there is no mistake we have arctic air with us in last night was the coldest april night since 2013. Tonight we are not going to be1 million miles from that. Down to 8 in the grampians and rural parts of england and wales could get as low as 3 to 5. Not quite as cold as some of the Western Areas thats because here there is more cloud, one or two shares in the showers will become more abundant in the west. Main rental may be some sleet and hail over the hills. Many staying dry for the day. Eastern areas predominantly dry tomorrow. All of us seeing temperatures climbing a bit compared to today. 8 to 13 celsius, still down and where we should be. Heres a quick comparison. We will be there for a good part of this week. Into wednesday, the cold and frosty star, the chance of mist and fog but most places staying dry on wednesday, even with a bit of cloud and one or two showers. A big difference into wednesday on the eastern coast, the chill returns, the wind coming off the sea as the High Pressure shifts, when going round in a clockwise fashion, north easterly wind bringing the air of the Sea Temperatures of 7 or 8 degrees. Not much above that through the day. One or two showers for east anglia but most parts of the uk on thursday will be dry again. Sunny spells, the best of it in the morning, more cloud in the afternoon. Beyond that most places will stay dry, temperatures looking a little into the weekend. But we could see some Rain In Scotland and Northern Ireland. A reminder of our top story
