When you are undocumented, immigration puts a hold on you to deport you back to your country. I was paying taxes, i was doing all of that, i dont have a felony. So i was like, by the time i get to ice, ill get a bond, and ill get out. Ice came there friday morning and picked me up and took me to, it was like three and a half hours away to irwin county. They keep denying me bond, i was there for a year and six months. From there, my life take a turn for the worse. Formed after the 9 11 terrorist attacks, the Us Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ice is a federal agency. Ice says its mission is to protect america from the cross border crime and illegal immigration that threaten National Security and public safety. The irwin county Detention Centre is run by a private prison corporation, they detain immigrants for ice. My name is azadeh shahshahani, and i serve as the legal and advocacy director of Project South human rights group, Project South, have been working with detainees at irwin county Detention Centre. I have been looking at the conditions at the irwin county Detention Centre for about ten years now. We found a range of violations, placing people in Solitary Confinement as a means of retaliation, lack of adequate access to health care, including for women, so lack of Reproductive Health care or lack of prenatal care. The Hygiene Situation was pretty horrid. The food often had foreign objects in it. Wendy says she fell ill at irwin county Detention Centre and asked for medical help. When i had my last daughter, i had pre eclampsia, i was diagnosed with pre eclampsia. So when i went in, i had hypertension, i have terrible cramps when im on my cycle, and i was bleeding extra heavy, and i think thats because of the stress, and i complained to the nurses and. So one morning, five oclock, they woke me up, im going outside going outside to a doctor. Before i went out, they shackled my arms, my waist, my feet. The only place i see that on is the tv. They took me to this doctor, doctoramin. He started to give me, like, a sonogram or an ultrasound, whatever that is, and he told me that ive got a lot of cysts and i had a mass in my ovary. Really, i dont think i questioned him on that first day what it was. He gave me, on that first day, he gave me depo shot in my buttocks. I think that deop shot is to contain the bleeding. The American College of obstetricians and gynaecologists was asked to provide several physicians who could review cases of women at the ice Detention Centre and i was one of five physicians. I received wendys medical records, and when i reviewed them, they certainly seemed in disarray, probably had pages missing. They were inconsistent in that some of the Laboratory Tests did not jive with the physical exam and other things that were subjectively entered by doctor amin. Doctor amins records were often illegible, different handwriting was noted. Typically when a woman comes to me in her late 405 with complaints of abnormal bleeding, the first thing i want to do is rule out pregnancy, but wendy had her tubes tied, so the next thing i want to do is ask her how long has this been going on . That wasnt documented. There is no evidence in the medical record that doctor amin ever asked her how long the problem existed, how many days did she she bleed, how heavily did she plead . She bleed, how heavily did she bleed . She never asked or documented that she tried anything, not even ibuprofen to stop her bleeding. I dont think it was a month, maybe a couple of weeks after that, i went to doctor amin again. He put his thing, ultrasound again, told me that my mass is growing. Its growing big. Even while you are in the room undressed, the guards sit there watching you. First time i asked one of them to step out, she told me she cant step out. She had to stay in there with us. Remember, we are in shackles, where we going . Where are we going . Ifeel humiliated, and ifeel less of a woman, like i have no say so over my life, i dont have a say so over my body. Its like im just an open book, you do whatever you want to do to me. These appeared to be the normal kinds of functional cysts, at least 25 50 of women have fibroids that they develop before they go into menopause, and women can treat them easily without surgery. Medical records say onjanuary the 29th, 2019, wendy was admitted was admitted for a laparoscopy or keyhole surgery to investigate her symptoms. She says she didnt give proper consent. That morning, i was extra sick. I think i was not feeling well for the whole week. They took me to the Irwin County Hospital, they told me that im going to have surgery. Im like, what type of surgery . But i was too weak to even argue with them or ask them any questions. The only thing i remember is waking up, back in irwin county Detention Centre feeling woozy. I tried to get up, i feel pain. When i feel, i got like three different bandages on my stomach. So im like, what. Whats up . They said they took cysts out. Doctor sarah said the surgery wendy had can sometimes be used to evaluate pelvic pain. With informed consent from the patient, and usually only after trying less invasive options. Within weeks, he recommended surgery, and i think that was very aggressive and inappropriate, having not taken a history, he did not do a proper evaluation, and then he offered two procedures that werent likely to help her since Strait Dncjust doesnt help abnormal bleeding in most cases. The procedure did not render her infertile, but what he did do a laparoscopy was remove a portion of her fallopian tube, which was normal for a woman who had already had her tubes tied. Shortly after that, i had a fever, a high fever. When i looked down at my stomach and its yellow, it got infected. By that time, i didnt get no Pain Medicine for one week. Remember, i was just gut into, cut into, open. They call me in in the morning, doctor amin� s office, then he told me my mass is as big as a cantaloupe. He said its got cancer. Wendy says doctor amin told her she needed to have a full hysterectomy. I told my 15 year old, she just started crying then and she was telling me to do it. She was like, mummy, please, do it. Because we dont want to lose you, please, do it. According to doctor amins notes, dictated two and half weeks before her scheduled admission, the patient requested removal of both tubes and ovaries, and then he reviewed the possible complications. He wrote, she understands and agrees for the surgery. At that time, he wrote, her uterus is six weeks size, although the examination a month earlier says it was 16 weeks size. There was no evidence at any time that she had such an enlarged uterus, nor that removing a 16 week sized uterus at that time in her life was immediate or urgent. She had no tumour that was grapefruit sized. Much of the record is illegible. Guards that were there at irwin county for a while said im a likeable person and a lot of them really do like me, and they are like, dont do it. By this time, i was stressed out, i called my family and everybody, because when you hear about cancer the only thing you can think about his death. I wrote a will to my brother, and i told him, you know, the love i have for my children from i told him if i die, you know, you should keep them, and what they need to do and. Wendy alleges she asked lasalle for a Second Opinion but did not receive one. She says she refused to go ahead with the hysterectomy without having a biopsy first. I already had a bad experience with you guys with surgery, and then you want me to do a major surgery, like a hysterectomy . Im still there with the pad dirty, so im telling them im not doing no surgery. They want to send me to the psychiatrist. Me saying that i dont need any hysterectomy doesnt mean im crazy. American law requires that we talk to patients american law requires that we talk to patients in a language they understand at a level thats appropriate that the average person would appropriate that the average person would want to know whats going on. Irwin county Detention Centre has been managed all to required government standards. The facility has fully co operated with the governments investigation into these allegations. The only exception is down to the south east where we had some fairly dense cloud throughout the day, associated with this Weather Front. And it brought some light, showery rain as well. Now, the front drifts away, and through the next night the showers will fade and the temperatures will fall away quite sharply. So we are likely to see another frost in many northern and eastern areas across the country. Maybe that frost getting into the south east with the lack of cloud. The Cold Arctic Air once again returns across the country, and so temperatures look likely to struggle as we go through the day on sunday. There will be some sunshine around first thing, but it will be the early bird that catches the sunshine as the shower clouds developed through the afternoon and, once again, though showers could be wintry with some hail, some sleet and snow mixed in there as well. As we move out of sunday into monday, weve got this area of High Pressure building in from the south west. But this Weather Front across the top of that high could bring some outbreaks of rain. It looks likely to be slipping its way into Northern Ireland, eventually into wales and south west england. So a dry day looks likely on monday across scotland and much of eastern england. Still a cool breeze coming down from the north sea. Here, those temperatures a little disappointing. Once again, highs of 7 10 celsius. As we move out of monday into tuesday, the High Pressure is going to build and stay with us. Now, the position of this high will be subject to question and there is still likely to be the risk of some showers from time to time.
