In the latest World Cup Qualifiers, while scotland secured their first win. Making a difference for Motor Neurone Disease. After raising more than two million pounds, Rugby League Legend Kevin Sinfield finds out how the money will help families. Good morning from the National Trust Osterley Park in london. We are here to see the bus and this morning. A cold start, fairly cloudy for most, but it will be dry and some of us will see some sunshine. All the details coming up. Its thursday the 1st of april. A new Nspcc Helpline offering advice and support to those who have been sexually abused or harassed in schools launches this morning. It comes after thousands of current and former pupils went online to share their experiences. An immediate review of Safeguarding Policies, in both state and private schools in england, is to be carried out by ofsted. Our education correspondent dan johnson reports. These are young women finally given a voice. There are now more than 11,000 of these anonymous accounts. Harassment, abuse and assaults mostly by their own classmates. There have been protests and walk outs, and a sense some schools have protected reputations before pupils. Now there will be action. This, ifeel, is a real watershed moment. I think theres lots more young people who havent necessarily felt able to come forward. So the potential is there that, you know, this could just be the tip of the iceberg. But we are very much prepared to support young people through this and ensure that their voices are being heard. What we wanted to do is take immediate action. And thats why, working with the nspcc, we have set up a helpline in order to be able to support victims. But why were wanting to go further, and that is why we have asked 0fsted to be able to conduct a full review in terms of safeguarding in our schools to protect the best interests of our children. Theyre aware this could eclipse any previous major scandal, and it may raise wider issues about male attitudes and the standard of sex and relationship education. It needs to tackle topics like pornography, consent, what constitutes a healthy or an unhealthy relationship. And im afraid that young people are still saying its not good enough there are those gaps in the curriculum. This National Conversation about how some men treat women now reaches to the youngest who havent felt safe even at school. Dan johnson, bbc news. Council bosses in Nottingham Have closed two parks after footage emerged of people drinking and ignoring social distancing rules. Other towns and cities have also seen crowds descend on parks and beaches after the easing of Lockdown Restrictions, leading to reports of Anti Social Behaviour and littering. 0ur reporter geeta pendse is in nottingham for us this morning. Many people had been enjoying the lovely weather the last couple of days and been really disappointed that the parks, those two at least, are closed. That the parks, those two at least, are closed are closed. Absolutely. It is very auiet, as are closed. Absolutely. It is very quiet. As youd are closed. Absolutely. It is very quiet, as youd imagine, are closed. Absolutely. It is very quiet, as youd imagine, this quiet, as youd imagine, this morning but that is the way it will stay because Nottingham City Council have closed two parks in the city because of Mass Gatherings that had taken place this week. Here at the arboretum, right in the heart of the city centre, we saw footage emerged of large clouds gathering with very little social distancing on monday. Some people were drinking, others were fighting, and we even saw people climbing trees. It was described as a frenzy. The following night, Tuesday Night, In Another Park close by there were large gatherings which led to a huge clean up operation the following day. This issue with litter is something we are seeing in other parts of the uk, as well. We have seen images of litter in parks in sheffield, leeds, Hyde Park Corner in london and, like you say, understandably people want to get out to enjoy the warm weather but officials are saying that we must stick to the current restrictions, that we can only meet in groups of up that we can only meet in groups of up to six people or to Households Mixing, and they say that is as much about safety as it is about the impact on the clean up operation and the people who have to deal with the litter the following day. Here in nottingham, two parks are now closed and the Council Leader says he regrets having to take that action when so many people were looking forward to enjoying green spaces like this one, the arboretum in the city centre. He says it is because of the actions of a small thoughtless minority that spoilt that. More coronavirus Lockdown Restrictions are being eased parts of the economy are also reopening in wales over the next few weeks. The easing will begin no earlier than april 12th when all pupils and students can return to school or university. 0ur correspondent Mark Hutchings is in cardiff this morning. There will be a great deal of attention on what might change next. There is a road map in place, what are you expecting to hear today . I have taken the liberty of writing them down because there are a load of dates being released today by the Welsh Government. It is true that some activities have opened up ahead of the rest of the uk. Critics of the Welsh Government has said the plan had been thin on dates. Today we have oodles of them. It has been confirmed that from april 12, all pupils will be called Back To School and that travel in and out of wales for people in the uk will be allowed and that will be a boost for the Tourism Industry. Lets look at the new dates. April 26 stands out, when Outdoor Attractions can open along with outdoor hospitality like the guidance. That is two weeks behind the grid plan for england. 0n the 3rd of may, organised Outdoor Activities can give up to 30 people Wedding Receptions can take place, outdoors again, for up to 30 people. The week after that, gyms and Leisure Centre can open for individual training but not group exercises, and two households can meet indoors. Maybe 17, the plan is for a return for indoor activities. After that there was government say they will look at indoor hospitality ahead of the spring bank holiday. All this comes with a caveat that Public Health conditions continue to be met. 0ne Public Health conditions continue to be met. One of the date for your diary, the 6th of may, when the elections take place and that will determine the formation of the next was government no next Welsh Government. More coronavirus Lockdown Restrictions are being eased in Northern Ireland today. Up to six people, from no more than two households, can now meet outdoors or in a private garden. Ten people, from no more than two households, can take part in Outdoor Sporting Activities and golf courses and Tennis Courts can reopen. Fewer than one in five people request a covid test if they have symptoms and the number who follow self isolation rules is low, a study by Kings College london has found. The Research Also revealed that a year into the pandemic only half of those asked could identify the main coronavirus symptoms. 0ur Health Correspondent Dominic Hughes has more. If you have symptoms, you need to get a test immediately. The test and trace system has been a key part of the governments strategy in the fight against the coronavirus, and will be equally important in the months to come. But a series of surveys involving more than 50,000 people across the uk reveals some worrying findings. 0verall, fewer than one in five said they would request a test if they develop symptoms of coronavirus. Only half could identify the main symptoms of covid 19 which include a cough, High Temperature and a loss of taste or smell. And while 70 of people said, if they were to develop symptoms, they intended to self isolate, the reality was that fewer than half reported that they did in fact do so. I think that its important to remember that all of these behaviours are really complex staying at home and self isolating is actually a really difficult behaviour to do and there are lots of Different Reasons why people may not be able to do it. It might be that they need to go out to work, they need to go out to care for someone, they need to go out to bring their kids to school, they need to go out to get food for their family or medicines for theirfamily. And its not really a one size fits all solution. The report raises doubts about the impact of a much criticised £37 billion test and trace system. The government says test and trace has saved countless lives since it was introduced, and maintains the overwhelming majority of people self isolate when asked to. But given the central role the system will play in the uks recovery from the pandemic, there will be concerns if its still performing poorly. Dominic hughes, bbc news. Schools will close in france for at least three weeks as part of a Third National lockdown, aimed at reducing a rising number of covid 19 infections. President Emmanuel Macron announced on National Television that restrictions already in place in some regions would be extended elsewhere. Lets speak to our paris correspondent hugh schofield, good to see you, good morning. This is a peek at the moment and was this reaction largely welcomed by president macron . Welcome, no. I acceted president macron . Welcome, no. I accepted with president macron . Welcome, no. I accepted with resignation, president macron . Welcome, no. I accepted with resignation, maybe l accepted with resignation, maybe yes. I accepted with some hostility, a little bit. The political opposition here feels that macron is vulnerable on this but macron two months ago said he would not have to do this, france is now in a third wave, it would not go into a stiff lockdown, schools will stay open because education was a priority and he really resisted this additional measure for weeks now, in the face of rising evidence that the Covid Epidemic was about to come back. He has had to give way now and that there is a climb down. I think the population as a whole knows it is inevitable because the figures are so bad. 35,000 new cases every day and the situation in hospitals in particular getting critical. The situation there being that patients are getting younger and mortality is going down but that means the beds are occupied for much longer. That is creating this critical Situation Notjust is creating this critical situation not just for covid is creating this critical Situation Notjust for covid but is creating this critical situation not just for covid but for other diseases. We now have a nationwide lockdown. They say it is not a lockdown. They say it is not a lockdown but it means we are being told more or less to stay in our homes, there we can move a bit more freely than other lockdown. This other issue of the schools closing, something macron said wouldnt happen but he has had to eat his hat. Forthe happen but he has had to eat his hat. For the next four weeks, parents are going to have to cope with kids on their hands. Parents are going to have to cope with kids on their hands. Thank you ve much with kids on their hands. First day of a new business year. How is it set to affect you . Lets talk pay. From today around two Million People will get a rise. The minimum wage is for people from school age to 22. Its graduated but at the top end youll see an increase of 16 pence per hour. The National Living wage changes today to anyone aged 23 or older today. And that goes up by 19p per hour. Both of these pay rises are higher than inflation so theoretically more to spend. But heres where your pocket will be hit. Council tax is going up in two thirds of english boroughs. If you are in the middle band d youre looking at an extra £24 a year. If you pay for nhs prescriptions in england they increase by 20p per item today. And your tv license is going up by £1. 50. Look out for your car tax, too. How much that goes up is linked to how old and polluting your car is. A new petrol or diesel car bought since 2017 will see an increase of £5. Partly to encourage us to buy greener models. So, of course, the answer is to do your research, to really focus in on those C02 Emissions and the cost that they will attract, and to take advantage of what really is an increasing pool of vehicles that meet the lower emission standards. The industry has moved to produce a lot of vehicles over recent years that really do fit these criteria. So new or used buyers can move into lower tax brackets by making the right choice when they purchase the car. And 15 million homes will see their gas or Electric Bill Go Up by almost £100 from today as the Energy Price Cap is increased. Lots of things do i. Good news for those having a significant pay increase. It is way above inflation but with your energy bills, that is because a couple of months ago of gemma said the default tariff would go in line with how much prices are cast to the companies 0fgem prices will go up. Lets take a look at todays papers. A Government Commissioned review into racism has been described as cultu rally deaf, reports the times. The review by the commission on race and ethnic disparities was criticised for comments about slavery in which it said the era was also about how African People transformed themselves culturally. The Labour Leader sir keir starmer has told the Daily Telegraph that using covid passports for everyday social activities once the pandemic has eased would be against the british instinct. He added that the government must not leave it to individuals, such as pub landlords, to decide whether to make such checks. The daily mirror uses its front page to call for tougher fines for people who litter, after Massive Piles Of Rubbish were left behind following the easing of Lockdown Rules in england this week. And the metro reports on the queen carrying out her first, in person Public Engagement of the year. She didnt wear a mask during her visit to the Air Forces Memorial in runnymede to mark the centenary of the Royal Australian air force. Lets look at the inside pages. On the theme of the outdoors, some of the theme of the outdoors, some of the negative stuff about so many more people being outdoors was about litter and the problems and too many people getting together. 0n litter and the problems and too many people getting together. On a slightly lighter note, in relation to people going outside, the countryside code, which is a good thing, all the things that people know about, shooting a gate as you go through, keep your dog under control, dont litter. In amongst all the advice now they are talking about part of the new code is to make other people feel more comfortable shutting the gates. The idea is that you should smile more. Some people feel as though the countryside is not a place for them so if you can do something to make a difference. So if you can do something to make a difference. Seven marathons in seven days was the gruelling challenge taken on by Kevin Sinfield at the end of last year, to help his former leeds rhinos team mate rob burrow, who is living with Motor Neurone Disease. Kev s amazing act of friendship raised more than £2. 2 million. Sally has been finding out how it will be used to Fund Research for a cure and help families like robs. Going the extra mile for his friend, for his team mate, and for the families affected by Motor Neurone Disease. Kevin sinfield set out to raise £77,000. In the end, he raised more than 2. 2 million. Its a disease for which there is no cure. More than half of people diagnosed will die within two years. Kevin is here today to talk to rob and his family about how that money will be spent. So tell us how proud of your dad that you are. Very, because we know he. We all know hes going to stay strong and fight this disease and try and get a cure and help other families with it. Rob now uses an Eye Tracking Machine to help him communicate. So, rob, we had an absolutely amazing response to you and your story, and obviously the seven in seven. I know the answer to this question, but why have we had such a focus on families in how we focus this money and how its utilised . Thats exactly why i went public with my story, so that people suffering without the backing of an entire sport could have help and support. Im proud to have other sufferers benefiting from the money raised in my name. First and foremost, you know, that initial shock of being told youve got mnd, and then the Ripple Effect throughout families is devastating. So how can we support and make that better . 0ther sufferers have got families, |theyve got friends, but the other| families havent got. They havent got Kevin Sinfield. Just a few miles away, theres another family dealing with the reality of living with mnd. These are exactly the sort of people that kevin and rob want to help. Kirsty was diagnosed just weeks before rob burrow. Can you tell us a bit about your journey . You got diagnosed in. November. 2019. We didnt know what it were. Didnt know what it were, no. Didnt know anything about it. With, obviously, rob having it, its highlighted it more in the media. I then obviously when kirsty then tells someone she hadnt seen shes got mnd, if theyre asking how she is then shell not have to explain cos. They know what it is obviously from rob. And what do you think about rob . Well, hes a. Hes a strong man. Like an endless donation, isnt he . Yeah. To, like, even be public eye with a condition. Cos its hard, yeah. Is a feat in itself, isnt it . Its hard every day. So for rob to be in the limelight. Extra attention. He is strong, very strong. Kirsty, you have, for many, many years, looked after other people. How tricky is it now, having to be looked after yourself . Frustrating. If youre sat there and you think, oh, look at that, it needs cleaning up, well, you cant even do it. Did you bring your wedding forward . Yeah. Tell me about that. Well. What did you do . Well, it was supposed to be. No, weve been together 15 years. Yeah. And never thought about it. Well, we did, but it was just always money. I bet you did i bet you did it were just always tmoney situation, wasnt it . Thought, rather take tkids away for a week, or, do this, do that . Yeah. And then obviously that just put it in perspective. Thought, well, it isnt about money, welljust do it. We only had ten people, including two registrars. Trying to put your dress on because jordan wasnt here to put it on. Yeah. Didnt have as many people but. It were close and tight knit and it were good, wasnt it . Yeah. So what was it like after all these years to finally get married, then . Er. Shell still not doing as shes told. Laughter. So, kev, that was. That was a really interesting meeting, wasnt it . Tell me how that was for you. To understand that kirsty was diagnosed a couple of weeks before rob, and just to see the way its affected the family. The bit you come away with is, you go back now to your own family and, um, but to understand that it doesnt stop for these people its 24 7 and you can see how tough it has been forjordan. But. Yeah, just feel like we want to do more and we dont do enough. 0nce part of the all conquering Leeds Rhinos Rugby League side, these team mates are still working together, trying to help people who need it most. Sally nugent, bbc news. We talked a lot about when the fund raising and originally about the diagnosis and everything, just to see how the money is being spent, good. Time now to get the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning. Im sonja jessup. A bit more cloud around than expected yesterday, and theres a Cooling Trend now as we head towards the Easter Weekend, so it wont feel as warm as it has been. But its still a mild start to this morning. Now some of that cloud through the morning could be thick enough to give us the odd spot of drizzle, maybe a light shower or two, but generally speaking it should be a dry day for the vast majority of us and the cloud will tend to break up as we head through the afternoon. There is a lot of talk about how things might be starting to get back to normal a bit with people coming in with their usual complaints, so what is going on . Its extremely busy now. Which in a sense,is its extremely busy now. Which in a sense, is good. This time last year, the first lockdown it was eerily quiet, nobody wanted to come in and we knew there were Health Problems out there that were not being presented to us but now they are all coming out of the woodwork and it is extremely busy and one of the big problems for us is that a lot of surgeries are also running the vaccine campaign, so we are short staffed on the ground for the regular stuff while we have half of the house staff giving vaccines and like a lot of gps, im working very long hours at the moment. This Study B Public long hours at the moment. This study by Public Health long hours at the moment. This study by Public Health england, long hours at the moment. This is a big, big study thats been ongoing for the Previous Year and they started it this time last year, checking up on 2000 people every month and over the year, as theyve done it, more people have become more aware of covid and have asked for more tests but there is a problem with people thinking that if i get a test i will be told to stay at home, so how am i going to do that . I have children to look after, i may be a single parent, i have a job to do and i need to keep the money coming in and there are real practicalities for some people about being told that you have to stay at home and you cant go to work. You have to stay at home and you cant go to work. Thats one part of the picture cant go to work. Thats one part of the picture and cant go to work. Thats one part of the picture and then cant go to work. Thats one part of the picture and then there cant go to work. Thats one part of the picture and then there is the picture and then there is another survey suggesting that only 52 of people can identify the main symptoms of covid 19. As a health practitioner, over the years, pre covid, you try to get home messages about health, so are you surprised that given everything that the government has tried to do about telling us what the symptoms are that still there is a lack of clarity . That still there is a lack of clari . , , , clarity . Its very interesting. Its auieter clarity . Its very interesting. Its quieter now clarity . Its very interesting. Its quieter now because clarity . Its very interesting. Its quieter now because the clarity . Its very interesting. Its l quieter now because the incidence has gone down but back in december and january we had people injanuary ringing up and saying ive got a fever, can i come in and see you . And i would say, have you done a covert test and they say, why should i . So there has clearly been some misunderstanding or lack of clarity about what the symptoms are and there also been a lot on social media, the fact we have concentrated so much on coughs and temperature and loss of taste and smell but there are other symptoms as well and i think people have got confused. fin i think people have got confused. On that note, never a bad time to remind people, the thing we need to say is that clearly what has changed now is that that those over 50s who have had the vaccination and the risk of serious illness or death has so diminished but the principles of covid can have long term implications, so knowing what to look out for remains really important. Mariel its really important. Mariel its really important. If you have a fever or feel unwell or you have a cough, loss of taste or smell orjust feel unwell or you have a cough, loss of taste or smell or just feel unwell and we know some people dont get these classic symptoms, they just feel unwell, get a test done because the thing is, it is great that the really Vulnerable People who are likely to go into hospital, a lot of those have been vaccinated but in younger people we are seeing a lot with what we call longer covid, long term tiredness, headaches, lots of long term conditions that can result from the infections so its really important, evenin infections so its really important, even in younger people, if you have got symptoms to get a test done. You mention younger people and we know there is more research being done about the vaccinations and as and when it happens and how effective it is on children. Number one, how safe, and number two, how effective . There is Research Going on all the time but there is a new study on the Pfizer Vaccine and it shows saying it is 100 effective, which is fantastic, preventing infection in younger people and it is safe, so thatis younger people and it is safe, so that is great news so hopefully it will mean that come the early summer we will be vaccinating children as well as young adults. I was reading the back pages and i was just thinking about how brutal the analysis is of football. John stones, made a mistake, letting a goal, poland against england in the World Cup Qualifiers, and you would have thought he would have been pilloried today in the press, but made up for it. Its how you deal with mistakes. And we will hear from the england manager, Gareth Southgate. On a busy night, of world cup qualifying action, three of the home nations were involved, with england needing a late goal to beat poland. Scotland cruised to their first win, against the Faroe Islands, but the frustration goes on for Northern Ireland. Austin halewood rounds up the action. Walking out to an empty wembley, perhaps for the final time, englands next competitive match there is in the euros this summer when fans could be allowed back. But until then, this one was all about business. Raheem sterling brought down in the box, penalty, and for harry kane business as usual. But poland are the toughest opponents in that group, and even without some of their best players, they got themselves back in it. A gift from john stones and the equaliser from the poles. For much of the second half, england offered little, but late on, stones made amends. His flick back to harry maguire, the defender, hammering his side to another win. So three out of three for england. But in glasgow, after two draws so far, this match against the Faroe Islands was the one they needed to win. Arsenals Kieran Tierney to aston villasjohn mcginn, a combination that works so well. They did it again, mcginn with his second before che adams scored the best of the lot. Scotland in the end finished with four and their hopes back on track. While in belfast, it was a special night for steven davis. The Northern Ireland captains 126th cap made him the most experienced international in british history. But for all of the irish chances, theyjust couldnt break through. A goalless draw at home to bulgaria. And in one of the toughest groups of them all, Northern Ireland need to start winning quick. So Northern Ireland, are still looking for a first win, during 90 minutes, in 11 matches under manager, Ian Baraclough while englands Gareth Southgate was still full of praise forjohn stones, despite the defender s costly mistake. It would be easy to fold in those moments, and john didnt. That was an important factor in us staying in the game as poland ended up with a little bit of momentum. And then a critical intervention in the other box to set up harry for what was a brilliant volley. But the biggest shock of the night came in germany as the four time world champions, suffered a humiliating defeat. They were beaten 2 1 by North Macedonia a team ranked 52 places below them. This was the winning moment. Elif elmas is only 21, and this is a moment hell never forget, scoring 5 minutes from time. Its the first time germany have lost a World Cup Qualifier in 20 years when england beat them 5 1. There was major Tournament Heartbreak for englands under 21s as they were knocked out of the european championships in dramatic style. Leading 2 0 against croatia, england were on course to reach the knockout stages until Domagoj Bradaric did this in stoppage time. England winning 2 1 but go out as they had to win by two clear goals. Chelsea have finally beaten their nemesis when it comes to the womens champions league. Theyve cruised past wolfsberg, in hungary to reach the semi finals. The german side had knocked chelsea out of the competition three times, but they were outplayed. Thisn time. Fran kirby with the third goal as chelsea won 5 1 on aggregate, both legs, in budapest due to covid travel restrictions. There was too much to do for manchester city. They did Beat Barcelona 2 1 in their second leg, Janine Beckie with citys first. But the damage had been done in the first leg, city losing 4 2 on aggregate. There was a big shock at the miami 0pen tennis, as naomi 0sakas 23 match Winning Streak came to an end. She was beaten in straight sets by Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals. Defeat means 0saka stays as the world number two missing the chance to go back, to the top of the rankings. World rugby has announced a trial of micro chipped mouthguards, which it hopes could be a game changer in improving Head Injury Detection and prevention. More than 700 grassroots players in new zealand, including men, women, and juniors from the under 13 age group upwards, will be involved. Harlequins are one of three english premiership clubs trialling The Mouthguard and they feel its been a success. Player safety is at the forefront of everyones minds at the moment, so the more research that goes into it, the better. And ultimately we as players, we want to feel protected and everything thats going on around us makes us feel that way. Have a look at the face. Can you tell whos son this Cricket Player is . The performance of one cricketer yesterday would suggest its the latter. 18 year old, josh de cares, scored an unbeaten century for Leeds Bradford universities against yorkshire and the name doesnt give it away, asjosh takes his mums maiden name, but hes the son of former england opener Michael Atherton and hes already got a deal to play for middlesex. So maybe you might say is a cooler name than etherton. It is a cold start to the day and the forecast is a cold one and its turning colder as well, particularly in the second half of the Bank Holiday Weekend but todayit half of the Bank Holiday Weekend but today it will still be warm, particularly in the south west, in the sun that is. If you see the Temperature Gradient Chart, the blues indicate Colder Weather so we have the blues today, colder than it has been and as we go through the next couple of days they will remain and on Sunday In The South we see a brief return of the yellows but then a second blast of cold air comes in and on Bank Holiday Monday it is going to feel quite raw for some with a northerly wind. What we have this morning is a fair bit of cloud and the best breaks today will be in south wales, South West England, central and Eastern England and also northern scotland and there is some drizzle this morning but some of the cloud will break but temperatures are down on where they were and we are down on where they were and we are looking at the range between eight or 18 degrees but particularly the north sea coast where we have a non sea breeze. As we head through the evening and overnight, centraland we head through the evening and overnight, central and eastern areas hanging on to cloud and the cloud and mcleod in northern scotland will produce drizzle but where we have clear skies elsewhere it will be cold with temperatures just below or above freezing and a sharp frost across parts of scotland where temperatures could fall to around 3 or 4. That takes us into tomorrow. 0nce or 4. That takes us into tomorrow. Once again tomorrow, a lot of cloud coming in from the north sea and the brightest guys will be in the west and once again we will have that nagging easterly coming in along the north sea coastline and really making it feel cold but temperatures will be down even in the South West Higher today. And then for saturday, a North And South split because in the north and scotland and Northern Ireland we are looking at sunshine but for england and wales there will be more cloud around but even so we will see a view breaks but the temperatures are closer to where they should be at this stage in april, but then again we have been used to higher temperatures and as we head into the weekend it will turn much colder and on monday not will itjust be cold but there will be wintry showers almost everywhere, but especially on the hills and even in the south. Its thursday the 1st of april. Our top story. 0ur education correspondent, dan johnson reports. Schools in france will close for at least three weeks as part of a Third National lockdown, aimed at reducing a rising number of covid 19 infections. President Emmanuel Macron announced on National Television that restrictions already in place in some regions would be extended elsewhere. Lets speak to our paris correspondent hugh schofield, in france i imagine this was one of the moments on National Television when the nation was watching and they found out things were going to get quite a bit tighter. Yes. They found out things were going to get quite a bit tighter. Get quite a bit tighter. Yes, as the french expression get quite a bit tighter. Yes, as the french expression has get quite a bit tighter. Yes, as the french expression has it, get quite a bit tighter. Yes, as the french expression has it, we i get quite a bit tighter. Yes, as the french expression has it, we will l french expression has it, we will all waiting to see what source we would be corrupted. The source is another lockdown what source we would be cooked in. Not unlike that lockdown like at the beginning, there is much more freedom to move, you can go up to ten kilometres, six miles away from home. You no longer have to have that famous piece of paper to show the police with a list of possible justifications on it. In general the picture is, yes, lockdown, we have been told to stay at home, restrict our we cannot go shopping except for essentials and we cannot move out of our region. 0ver we cannot move out of our region. Over the weekend there is a window when you can leave and im sure there will be a big exodus from paris, people going to their country homes, and you have to stay there for the next month. So it is a lockdown and to that extent it is a climb down by president macron. The other Thing Changing is that schools are shutting and he promised back in january that france would not go down this route typical fashion he decided there was a third wave, we would have a light lockdown and education would continue because it was so important. A lot of doctors were saying, no, the statistics are not good, there will be a big third wave with the british variant rates crashes into the country in march and that is what happened. President macron is having to eat his hat Up To A Certain Point In Closing Schools now and putting back into lockdown of the opposition knows that and feels it has the president a bit on the defensive here. Thank ou ve a bit on the defensive here. Thank you very much sir keir starmer has suggested people would reject the use of so called Vaccine Passports in order to gain access to venues such as pubs. Ministers are looking into the idea, but the Labour Leader says there could be public opposition to them if the virus is brought under control. Lets speak to our political correspondent, jonathan blake. Good morning. These passports, we have been talking about this for quite some time and the debate continues. It certainly does and it is a big talking continues. It certainly does and it is a big talking point. Continues. It certainly does and it is a big talking point. Keir continues. It certainly does and it| is a big talking point. Keir starmer has waded right in and taken a stance saying it would be against the british instinct to have the Vaccine Passports. He has acknowledged it is a difficult issue, there is no clear yes or no, black or white answer, but says that if the vaccine roll out continues to be a success, infections and Hospital Admissions come down, speaking in the Daily Telegraph he said there would be a british sense we dont actually need to go down this road. This puts him at odds with the Prime Minister who, despite opposing the idea early in the pandemic, has recently said it should not be totally alien to us at the government is of course looking into what to do here and on the idea of specifically making it down to individual landlords to determine who is allowed in or not on the basis of their disease status, that is something prime is Minister Second happened. Sir keir starmer was much less unequivocal same, saying outsourcing to individual landlords is wrong in principle. This means that it could be a divisive moment for the government when the eventual plans they put forward on what to do on Vaccine Passports come before mps in the house of commons. Without the support of labour and without the support of labour and without the support of labour and without the support of a good number of conservative backbenchers, the government could be in a bit of trouble. We will have to wait and see what the plans they come forward with our exactly and what labours stance on that ends up being. {lilia stance on that ends up being. Ok, alwa s stance on that ends up being. Ok, always good stance on that ends up being. Ok, always good to stance on that ends up being. 0k, always good to talk to you, thank you, jonathan blake. Here in nottingham, the city council had decided to close two local parks in the city because of Mass Gatherings that have been taking place this week, but in the last couple of minutes we have seen someone arrive here and open the gate, so that possibly is changing now, but on monday the reason why the council initially made this announcement was because of the footage that emerged here at the arboretum, right in the heart of nottingham city centre, which showed large crowds gathering with very little social distancing in place. We sought some people that were drinking, others were fighting, even climbing trees and it was described by one council official as a frenzy. 0n by one council official as a frenzy. On Tuesday Night In Another Parked nearby we also saw a Mass Gathering which led to a huge clean up operation the following day. This issue with litter seems to be replicated in other parts of the country, as well, so we have seen images of parks in places like leeds, sheffield, at hyde park in london, with vast piles of rubbish and a huge clean up operation then taking place. It is really understandable with the warmer weather that people want to get out and enjoy the greenery and also the partial easing of restrictions, but officials are really stressing the fact that we can only meet in groups of up to six or two Households Mixing up that is because of safety but also the potential impact when it comes to cleaning up the mess. Of course where there are people who do things persistently then absolutely enforcement is the appropriate approach. But i think that the approach that the police have been taking is the correct one and i think we have to give them that support now Going Forward. I cannot unfortunately see the pictures on your screen, but obviously i know what you are referring to. But that approach from the police Going Forward will be important. But i would also urge people, as well, to be very cautious. Yes, of course, we all want to see it now the restrictions being lifted. We all want to gradually get our freedoms back, of course, but we have to be cautious. We are in no sense through this yet. On that thought, it is a crucial time. Politicians, the government, your are time. Politicians, the government, yourare singing all time. Politicians, the government, your are singing all the time that this is a particularly crucial time. As we go for the next stages of improving peoples lives. Some people will say, and i appreciate you couldnt see the images we were showing, they will say, well, if there was pictures go out and they can see hundreds of people gathering, and the police are not moving them on, that is sending out all the wrong messages. I think public order policing is a very particular part of policing when you have to rely on the judgment of Police Officers on the ground and not doing things that might actually make the situation worse. But the brodick point is, one, people taking responsibility, and that is very clear that the brodick point. We are not in any sense out of the woods and they should take responsibility. The judgment is that police are making on the ground in extremely difficult circumstances, i think that general approach police have taken, as i say, of moving from the first of all having that talk to people, chatting to people, asking them to comply with rules, which in many cases they do, has been appropriate and continues to be so Going Forward. Sir keir starmer has been talking about the notion of Vaccine Passports, saying it would be against the british instinct. Have you had direct conversations with him . You are a shadow home secretary so this would fall within your domain. What does that mean . Yes, i have had many discussions with keir on the issue of Vaccine Passports and on the international scene, if you like, it is inevitable. There is a precedent for it with things like the yellow fever vaccine. Internationally the government should just get on with it. Domestically, it is far more complicated. There are a lot of ethical, legal, practical issues around it and there has to be a National Conversation about it. The point keir was making is if we get to a stage, this should be the focus of the government at the moment, are continuing to drive up vaccine take up, to continue with the vaccine roll out, but if we get to a stage where the vaccine roll out has been largely completed and indeed the restrictions have actually largely gone, but we are not there yet, but when we get to that stage, keir was saying at that stage he thinks restrictions will be against it. The sunshine always best the further west you are across the capital. Top temperatures today of 16 or 17 celsius. And theres quite cool and a noticeable north Easterly Wind blowing, too. Now through this evening and overnight, then well see lots of long clear spells around. Temperatures will stay just above freezing, but it is a chilly start to the day on friday. On friday we keep that cool north Easterly Wind. Therell be lots of cloud. Bit of sunshine always best in the west again through the afternoon and it should stay dry. Temperatures, though, will be lower. Staying dry over the Easter Weekend until we get to Bank Holiday Monday. Theres more from me in an hour. Plenty more too on our website at the usual address bye for now. Hello, this is breakfast with Naga Munchetty and charlie stayt. Be outdoors in a nanosecond or two but i want to bring you inside first because this is the newly restored garden house and full of hardy plants you would find outside and quite atmospheric in here as well, as you can probably hear. Outside it is a cold start of the day and the reason we are here is to celebrate the National Trust campaign which is Blossom Watch and what they are asking to do is for you to send in your pictures of blossoms to the hashtag address on social media and they want to build a picture of the country going from grey to green to pink and its such a lovely idea. And if you are planning on coming to Osterley Park this weekend, its worth noting that it is fully booked already. The weather this weekend will take a real turn, much colder thanit will take a real turn, much colder than it has been. Yesterday, for example the top temperature in the uk was in norfolk where it was 2a degrees, more or less, give or take a point. Today its more likely to be eight or 9 degrees with a cool Easterly Wind so the forecast is turning colder but today in the south west we will cling warmer conditions. As we go through the next few days, where ever you see blue, that is telling you it will be cold, so the blue through tomorrow is across the whole of the country and then the same on saturday and on sunday, a bit of yellow coming back to indicate in the south particularly that its not going to be as cold but we have the second plunge of cold air coming in on sunday and on Easter Monday and there will even be wintry showers in there will even be wintry showers in the forecast. This morning what we haveis the forecast. This morning what we have is a fair bit of cloud around and as we start the day, we will see the cloud break up across south wales, South West England, central and southern parts of england and also northern scotland. That is where we will see the highest temperatures in the south of 18 degrees and in the north we are looking at eight, but it will feel cold on the north sea coastline. Through the evening and overnight we will hang on to some cloud across central and eastern parts with northern scotland cloudy as well with some drizzle but where the cloud is broken is where the lowest temperatures will be with temperatures will be with temperatures generally below or above freezing but in sheltered glens it could fall as low as 3 or four so there will be a sharp frost. Tomorrow we start with all of this cloud in central and eastern areas and again, coming in from the north sea on the eastern flow. The brighter skies will be out towards the west but by then temperatures will be down so where its been milder today in the south west, for you temperatures will continue to drop, closerto you temperatures will continue to drop, closer to where they should be for this time of year but a shock to the system compared to what we are used to. On saturday it is a North And South split and scotland and Northern Ireland see sunshine but england and wales having more cloud but nonetheless the cloud will break in places and we will see sunshine coming through but the temperatures will be lower and as we head through Easter Sunday and monday a big dip in temperature particularly on Easter Monday, so a change is afoot. Good morning from Osterley Park in london. A lovely start to the day but it is chilly. For many, cloudless night but it will brighten across the south and north and we have a keen easterly breeze. All the details in about ten minutes. Its thursday the 1st of april. Our top story. A new Nspcc Helpline, offering advice and support to those who have been sexually abused or harassed in schools, launches this morning. It comes after thousands of current and former pupils went online to share their experiences. An immediate review of Safeguarding Policies, in both state and private schools in england, is to be carried out by ofsted. Our education correspondent, dan johnson reports. These are young women finally given a voice. There are now more than 11,000 of these anonymous accounts. Harassment, abuse and assaults mostly by their own classmates. There have been protests and walk outs, and a sense some schools have protected reputations before pupils. Now there will be action. Delighted to get in place an independent non judgemental safe place for young people and their families and those affected by these developments to come and share their worries and their concerns because i think its clearly distressing and disturbing to read online what these young people are experiencing, and we need to help as many of them as possible. Were wanting to go further, and that is why we have asked 0fsted to be able to conduct a full review in terms of safeguarding in our schools to protect the best interests of our children. Fewer than one in five people request a covid test if they have symptoms and the number who follow self isolation rules is low, a study by Kings College london has found. The Research Also revealed that a year into the pandemic only half of those asked could identify the main coronavirus symptoms. Our Health Correspondent Dominic Hughes has more. If you have symptoms, you need to get a test immediately. The test and trace system has been a key part of the governments strategy in the fight against the coronavirus, and will be equally important in the months to come. But a series of surveys involving more than 50,000 people across the uk reveals some worrying findings. Overall, fewer than one in five said they would request a test if they develop symptoms of coronavirus. Only half could identify the main symptoms of covid i9 which include a cough, High Temperature and a loss of taste or smell. Sir keir starmer has suggested people would reject the use of so called Vaccine Passports in order to gain access to venues such as pubs. The government is looking into what to do and whether people will be asked to work required to prove whether they have had the corona vaccine or a recently tested negative to gain entry to pubs, bars, restaurants, theatres, cinemas and any number of premises once restrictions are lifted towards the end ofjune in england. Sir keir starmer has waded into this debate, taking something of a stance in an interview with the telegraph saying that Vaccine Passports would be against the british instinct. He acknowledges it is a difficult area, complex area with no clear cut answers and the shadow home secretary, who you have been hearing from on the programme this morning, nick thomas symonds, suggested that sir keir starmer would only not want to see these in place in certain circumstances i am if we get to a stage so where the vaccine roll out has been largely completed and indeed the restrictions have actually largely gone, we are not there yet, as i said, but when we get to that stage, he there yet, as i said, but when we get to that stage, get to that stage, he was saying that at that get to that stage, he was saying that at that point get to that stage, he was saying that at that point he get to that stage, he was saying that at that point he thinks get to that stage, he was saying that at that point he thinks the i that at that point he thinks the british that at that point he thinks the british instinct would probably be against british instinct would probably be against it british instinct would probably be against it but this is a complex area against it but this is a complex area with against it but this is a complex area with no simple answers. It is another to oppose whatever the government comes forward with after its review and it is due to do that injune, and vote against those plans in the house of commons. But if labour were to do that it could turn what is already a very sensitive debate into a divisive moment, as england emerges from the coronavirus pandemic because there are a good few conservative mps who dont like this idea at all either, so it would mean its passage through parliament would be far from guaranteed. Thank its passage through parliament would be far from guaranteed. The metropolitan police is looking into allegations that a Serving Officer raped two of his female colleagues. If youre planning to come here this weekend it is fully booked. The weather this morning, oh, a bit chilly temperatures are where they should be at this time of year but we have been spoilt by the milder conditions and the forecast for today is colder than we have been used to. Just the south west is hanging on to the higher temperatures but even here the temperatures are a bit lower than they have been in the last few days. A lot of cloud to start the day, it will break through the morning across south wales, South West England, central and Southern England and the south east as well as the north of the country. The rest of us will hang on to cloud, at times quite thick, some will break some brightness will come through. Temperatures eight in the north to 18 in the south, down at sea coastline really cool with an easterly onshore flow. Through this evening and overnight, once again we will see a return to cloud across central and eastern areas and the north of scotland and in the north we are likely to see drizzle coming out of that but under clear skies it will be a cold night, widely with temperatures just below orjust above freezing. In the sheltered lives in scotland, 30 1i, so a sharp frost. Tomorrow, a lot of cloud coming in from the north sea across central and eastern areas. Western areas favoured for more sunshine, still not that keen Easterly Wind from the north sea, as well, and again tomorrow will feel cold. This time the cold will get all the south west so you will see a drop in temperatures by then. As we head through the Bank Holiday Weekend it will be cold but especially so late on sunday and also monday, and monday will have a northerly wind and some wintry showers as far south as the south of england. Seven marathons in seven days was the gruelling challenge taken on by Kevin Sinfield at the end of last year, to help his former leeds rhinos team mate rob burrow, who is living with Motor Neurone Disease. Kevins amazing act of friendship raised more than £2. Other sufferers have got families, |theyve got friends, but the other| families havent got. They havent got a Kevin Sinfield, unfortunately. I just a few miles away, theres another family dealing with the reality of living with mnd. I then obviously when kirsty then tells someone she hadnt seen. In ages shes got mnd, if theyre asking how she is then shell not have to explain cos they know what it is obviously from rob. And what do you think about rob . Well, hes a. Hes a strong man. Like an endless donation, isnt he . Yeah. To, like, even be in the public eye with a condition. No, weve been together 15 year. Yeah. And never thought about it. Well, we did, but it was just always money. I bet you did i bet you did it were just always tmoney situation, wasnt it . Thought, rathertake tkids away for a week, or do this, do that. Yeah. And then obviously that just put it in perspective. Thought, well, it doesnt matter about money, welljust do it. We only had ten people, including two registrars. We were trying to put your dress, werent we . Cosjordan wasnt here to put it on. Yeah. Didnt have as many people but. It were close and tight knit and it were good, wasnt it . Yeah. So what was it like after all these years to finally get married, then . Er. Shell still doesnt do as shes told. Laughter. Idiot so, kev, that was. Once part of the all conquering Leeds Rhinos Rugby League side, these team mates are still working together, trying to help people who need it most. Sally nugent, bbc news. Were joined now by chris james from the Motor Neurone Disease association. Very good morning to you. I know you are listening in is that piece was going out. As always, we say a huge thanks to casey and jordan, the lovely couple, the family who are going through what you know so well that families are going through and that families are going through and thatis that families are going through and that is the core of this. Rob and kevin are intent that the money they have raised goes to families and all the problems they will be facing. Absolutely. We would like to say an enormous thank you to kevin and rob and the family and everything they have done to raise awareness of mnd. An amazing amount of may. We talk really carefully with rob and kevin and the family about how the money will be spent and i am pleased to say we can channel that money into three key areas of work. Care for people with mnd, three funding, Multidisciplinary Care through care centres which is really important for families and people with mnd, to provide support for people locally, as well, to make sure that they get anything they need when they need it when they are dealing with this devastating disease. And also into research, as well, and i know kevin and rob thought it was really wanting to put money into research and one of the great thing and exciting things about this is that because of the greater support from the community to kevin and rob, it means we have seen an incredible amount of support for the Mnd Association. We are able to increase our funding for mnd research this year, so we are committing an extra £2 million to the £3 million we had already budgeted and with the great support of kev and rob, that brings to a total of £5. 7 million to find a treatment by this devastating disease. , ~ treatment by this devastating disease. ~. ,. , disease. For the people who may have given money, its clearly been a difficult time so there is a lot of good things all around that story, isnt there . The warm weather and easing of Lockdown Restrictions has seen people flock to parks and beaches across england and wales. But along with the crowds has come a big problem litter. And councils say theyre struggling with the clean up, as andy moore reports. A giganticjob of cleaning up in leeds after some of the citys parks were overwhelmed by crowds enjoying the sunshine at the end of lockdown. It was a similar picture in many places in england and wales. The litter is a serious concern for local councils. The Campaign Group keep britain tidy says the government will need to provide more money to help local authorities. There are no silver bullets or solutions to this, but i think a great big headline Campaign Message around how we should behave when we go to the beach use a bin, or take your litter home plus additional staff on site, can help to manage what will be, you know, a great summer, hopefully a great summer with clean beaches and clean parks. Its notjust parks but beaches, as well, that have been besieged by huge crowds. This is what was left behind on swansea beach. Local volunteers did their best to tidy up. Came on the beach beforehand just to see what the damage was. 100 , the worst ive ever seen it. So we came here at 6. 30 and i think it took about three hours for the clean up in total. In sheffield, six tonnes of rubbish were collected at endcliffe park. The local council told people, please love your parks, but dont leave your mess behind. Andy moore, bbc news. In nottingham, Council Bosses have reopened two parks in the city this morning. They had been closed to the public after large groups gathered there. It is now reopened but, as you said, yesterday afternoon the you said, yesterday afternoon the arboretum, this park in the height of nottingham, was closed along with another because of concerns about Mass Gatherings taking place. This is a really popular park, one that is a really popular park, one that is treated with a lot of respect. But on monday we saw large clouds gather, footage of very little social distancing, people were drinking, somewhere fighting, even climbing trees and it was described by one council official as a frenzy. The following night, tuesday, another park closed a year also saw Mass Gatherings which led to a really big clean up operation the following day, wednesday morning. We have heard reports that the same thing happened last night. Understandably, it is lovely warm we have experienced and it has meant people had wanted to be out and to enjoy the partial easing of Lockdown Restrictions. Officials here are keen to stress there are restrictions still in place, that we can only meet in groups of up to six, ortwo can only meet in groups of up to six, or two hassles mixing. They say it is really important for safety as well as for the environment. The parks have reopened, it has been very peaceful so far and there are hopes it will stay that way. Everybody understands the regulations now, it is very clear what they are, there are lots of people explaining them and would just ask people to be responsible. We all want to see the relaxation, we all want the process to go back to the way our lives where and i entirely understand that but i was urged to show responsibility. We only have to look across at france with the country go back into national lockdown. We are moving forward things are improving, the vaccine is working really well, but we still have to be careful and i would urge people to be responsible, use the freedoms that i though now, but if we stick to the timetable and im sure the country can emerge but it people are deliberately breaching the rules that we will move to enforcement if they refuse to respond enforcement if they refuse to resond ,. ,. We are doing our normaljobs but we are playing a role in Health Protection and the majority of the public have been absolutely great. As you rightly say, people may not feel safe and we want everybody to feel safe and we want everybody to feel safe, and people can have small numbers of people in their garden but what we cant see, and unfortunately we are still having to break up parties in guidance where people have 20, 30 people having a barbecue with music, which apart from breaking the law is just dangerous. It has been really hide for everybody, we understand that, but on the whole the public have been great, wait with us but unfortunately throughout there has been this persistent call of people who have not followed the rules, they are putting themselves in danger and other people and they are risking emerging out of the lockdown, so i would urge everyone to use the new freedoms, i know the weather is nice, we will have many hits on holiday now for easter, but just be responsible so that we can continue moving forward and we dont find ourselves in a place where, as we have seen in other countries, we have to go back into much stricter restrictions. When people gather in ways which breach the rules, they put themselves and other people at risk again. Coronavirus has not gone away. We only have to look to a country is close to the uk as france to see how quickly things can get worse again. We need everybody to observe the rules properly because in that way we can go on lifting of restrictions and restoring freedoms. Yesterday in a way born it was almost 2a celsius but today its more likely to be eight or nine with a cool wind off the north sea and if you look at the Temperature Gradient Chart when you see blue, that is tempering telling you the temperature is going down and it will be cold and there is a blip on Easter Sunday but on Easter Monday, look at that blue across the uk, it will be windy as well. This morning there is a lot of cloud around and through the morning it will start to break across south wales in South West England and central and southern parts of england and also parts of the north. The rest of us the cloud will thin out at times but we will hang on to more cloud with temperatures ranging from eight in the north to 18 in the south but cold along the north sea coast with the onshore flow. Through the evening and overnight, central and eastern areas hang onto the cloud and northern scotland will have cloud as well producing drizzle at times but for the rest of us under clear skies it will be cold with temperatures dipping to just below or above freezing but in the sheltered glens, as low as 3 or four, so a sharp frost for parts of scotland. Tomorrow we will still have the keen Easterly Wind coming in from the north sea bringing in a lot of cloud with it so its the Western Areas that will see the best of any sunshine and like today, some of any sunshine and like today, some of the cloud will thin and break and it will brighten up but by tomorrow it will brighten up but by tomorrow it will brighten up but by tomorrow it will be colder for all of us, evenin it will be colder for all of us, even in the south west but we are holding on to higher temperatures today. As we head into saturday, it is a North And South split and in the north there will be sunshine around in scotland and Northern Ireland but for england and wales there will be more cloud and some of that will break and brighten up a touch but it is still going to feel cold and into the rest of the Easter Weekend it turns colder and by Easter Monday it will be cold enough for snow, especially on the hills but even as far south as southern parts of england and you will feel it. It will feel better on Easter Monday. Talk about ending on a high note. I know, i dont make the weather. But i would like to wish everybody a happy easter. I would like to wish everybody a happy easter i would like to wish everybody a happy easter. You say that, but i know the truth. Happy easter. You say that, but i know the truth. Carol, happy easter. You say that, but i know the truth. Carol, happy happy easter. You say that, but i i know the truth. Carol, happy easter to you as well. See you soon. There are questions about how much we in society talk about grief and how comfortable we are in talking about it more generally. I think most people would agree not enough, and its always difficult when you are approaching a loved one, friend who is experiencing loss. When his partner david died in 2019 the reverend Richard Coles found himself alone for the first time in 12 years. Now richards written a book about his grief in the hope it might help others going through a similar experience. Hejoins us now. Richard, very good morning to you. Good morning. Richard, very good morning to you. Good morning richard, very good morning to you. Good morning. What you have done here is you good morning. What you have done here is you have good morning. What you have done here is you have put good morning. What you have done here is you have put it good morning. What you have done here is you have put it all good morning. What you have done here is you have put it all out i here is you have put it all out there. You have put it all out there and for people who are not familiar with the story, you suffered a bereavement and lost your partner, david, and this story takes us into everything that you went through. Yes, there are locks of books about grief, self help books that try to help you through the process but when it happened to me what i wanted was to find out what it was like in the best encounters i had in the immediate aftermath of davids death was with other widows because there could be pragmatic, hard won knowledge and that is what really helped me, so i decided to write down what was happening to me right in the thick of it from david being taken into hospital through to his death and his funeral. That is probably to give people a sense of the context of that but also because as a bereavement specialist, as someone who walks alongside the bereaved in my professional life all the time, i think it is someone something we have exported beyond the edges of our daily concerns and experiences and that is a shame because it is the one fate we are all going to share and in terms of bereavement, if youre lucky enough to share your life with someone who loves you, the chances are 50 it will happen to you so its important we get on terms again with death, bereavement and grief. Its we get on terms again with death, bereavement and grief. Bereavement and grief. Its really interesting. Bereavement and grief. Its really interesting, because bereavement and grief. Its really interesting, because you bereavement and grief. Its really interesting, because you say i bereavement and grief. Its really interesting, because you say you | interesting, because you say you spend time helping people who are grieving. What did you learn that you perhaps wish you had known when you perhaps wish you had known when you were talking to people, and by no means am i suggesting you offered meaningless platitudes, but you knew what you had to do but i think when it affects you so much you learn something else. It affects you so much you learn something else. Yes, i think the most important something else. Yes, i think the most important lesson something else. Yes, i think the most important lesson i something else. Yes, i think the most important lesson i learned| something else. Yes, i think the l most important lesson i learned is that you go bananas. I called the book the madness of grief but it is like being gripped by a sudden madness that comes upon you and it is almost a disruption of your daily pattern, so after david died and i went to the co op to get bread and milk because id been in hospital forfour days milk because id been in hospital for four days with milk because id been in hospital forfour days with his milk because id been in hospital for four days with his family and i went in and came out with three types of parmesan and what i thought i was doing, i dont know. I took the dogs for a walk that day and when i got home i realised i hadnt taken them with me so i had to go back and find them. There is that sort of thing. But i think a bereavement is like a depth charge that goes for and all sorts of stuff lays up to the surface and the compass by which you regulate your life spins and you are really not fit for purpose for a while and one of the issues is that one of the people people want to master grief, but you dont master grief, grief, but you dont master grief, grief masters you. Its one of those things you have to let happen. Isnt things you have to let happen. Isnt there that fear things you have to let happen. Isnt there that fear when things you have to let happen. Isnt there that fear when it seems like a spiral, when you lose someone or something that has touched your life in such a way and you feel it has been wrenched away society almost tells us that you cannot spiral out of control and you have to keep it together. You can have a couple of weeks of grief and then you have to get back to normal. Did you feel that . , ~ that . Yes, i did. It we mocked the victorians that . Yes, i did. It we mocked the victorians for that . Yes, i did. It we mocked the victorians for their that . Yes, i did. It we mocked the victorians for their elaborate i victorians for their elaborate rituals of grief and i saw on ebay the other day there was a ear trumpet for morning i was tempted to get, but there was having black borders on your calling cards and it seems absurd but they knew something we dont because their experience of death was everyday and i think you do need to mark, to be marked out as something. Here is a simple thing i learned. Never be impatient with someone at a hospital car park pay station because they might be fiddling with their chains and might have forgotten their Registration Number is because they might be having the worst day of their life and it behoves us to give people a bit of room and respect and a bit of dignity because its a very, very tough experience. Dignity because its a very, very tough experience. Richard, ifi may sa so, tough experience. Richard, ifi may say so. There tough experience. Richard, ifi may say so. There is tough experience. Richard, ifi may say so, there is a tough experience. Richard, ifi may say so, there is a rich tough experience. Richard, ifi may say so, there is a rich vein tough experience. Richard, ifi may say so, there is a rich vein of tough experience. Richard, ifi may say so, there is a rich vein of your. Say so, there is a rich vein of your humour running through this book and it kind of pops up sometimes at the time you least expect it. I dont know if you mind recounting one incident, and i think you were in the hospital and david is very, very ill and you take a moment to go to the coffee shop and people recognise you and you, i imagine, you are in some kind of despair, not knowing what is going on and then people are coming up and wanting to say hello. I was white with shock and david had literally just i was white with shock and david had literallyjust been admitted to a e and i had blood stains on me and i was shaking because i realised he was shaking because i realised he was going into theatre and might not survive and all of a sudden some, oh, do estate world, its the strictly vicar and then i had to do selfies with people and id got the worst news of my life but i went into autopilot and did the thumbs up and i wonder if in those pictures people notice i am white and also bloodstained, but that was a pretty gruesome moment. Other widows are great, the day david died i went to buy some posh hand cream for the nurses because that is what nurses want, not chocolates, and davids death had been on the news and she took my hand and said im so sorry and tears came to my eyes and she hugged me and said its all right. And i said, what do i need to know . And i said, what do i need to know . And she thought for a moment and said no one will ever be as nice to you again as they are now, so make the most of it. You again as they are now, so make the most of it the most of it. There is always the touchin the most of it. There is always the touching nature the most of it. There is always the touching nature of the most of it. There is always the touching nature of strangers. I the most of it. There is always the touching nature of strangers. We i the most of it. There is always the i touching nature of strangers. We are seeing pictures of you and david angie know what tv is like, we have got a hard out in a0 seconds. Do you want to have 30 seconds to let the world know who he was . Want to have 30 seconds to let the world know who he was . David was Wonderful World know who he was . David was wonderful he world know who he was . David was wonderful. He came world know who he was . David was wonderful. He came from world know who he was . David was i wonderful. He came from manchester, a working class background and became a nurse and then he reinvented himself like so many gay men of his and generation do. Lived in america, south africa, france, came back to england, met me, made me, much to my surprise, extremely happy and david was also an addiction to alcohol and in the end it overwhelmed him and that was the cause of his death but he made my life immeasurably richer than it would have been otherwise, completely as a surprise and i wouldnt have missed anything of it out and its a wonderful thing. And what ive been going through in the pastis what ive been going through in the past is terrible but i stand up and i face forward and i past is terrible but i stand up and iface forward and i give past is terrible but i stand up and i face forward and i give thanks for everything that he gave to me. Richard, lovely to talk to you this morning and a lot of people will get enormous benefit from your book and it takes you on a roller coaster ride, so thank you. And it is lovely to see you.
