The scams, the fraud, and the heartbreak they bring. Good morning. An estimated £35 million has been taken in a year, as covid offers Fertile Ground to fraudsters. Ill look at how you can protect yourself. From inspiring a generation, to going for gold this summer in an exclusive interview Katarina Johnson thompson tells breakfast the pandemic wont slow her down. Good morning. The next few days we are looking at a mixture of sunshine and showers. Some will be heavy, Windy At Times. Friday will turn colder with snow, mostly on the hills. Ill the details later. Good morning. Its wednesday, the 24th of march. Fourteen people have been arrested following a second night of protests in bristol. The crowds had gathered to demonstrate against the governments new Policing Bill. Andrew plant has more. For the second time in three days, riot police in the centre of bristol, moving in to Disperse Protesters who had gathered near the centre of the city. It was a peaceful protest, but scuffles broke out as officers moved in. Avon and Somerset Police said current Lockdown Rules meant they had to disperse the group. Kill the bill its now after midnight here, and weve been in this situation here in bristol for more than an hour and a half now. You can see maybe up to 100 protesters sitting and standing there, and this line of riot police havent moved for quite a long time. And the reason theyre standing here is it prevents the protesters going back from here to where they started in the city centre. It comes after these violent scenes on sunday, twenty one officers were injured when demonstrators gathered for the kill the bill protest against the proposed new police and crime bill. Mounted Police Officer Hannah Clarke was working on sunday night with her horse mendip. Certainly sunday was on another level from our point of view, ive not seen levels of violence that bad in my career. And i think probably people that have been working in the job for a lot longer than me would agree with that. Certainly en route you could hear what was going on. You could hear the noise on the radio and the Emergency Buttons going off and colleagues asking for help. So it was quite distressing listening as youre on your way. You just wanted to get there to kind of help, really. The aggression towards the police was astonishing, really. A lot of the windows had been damaged. They were vehicles on fire. There were hundreds of people on top of the ncp car parks, throwing items varying from street furniture, glass bottles. I think even a microwave got thrown down at one point. So it was certainly aggressive. How the police handle protests has been in the headlines since criticism of the metropolitan Police Handling of a vigil for Sarah Everard. With protests legally allowed once again in england from monday, ministers will be thinking hard about how protests can be policed during a global pandemic. Andrew plant, bbc news in bristol. The Home Secretary has announced changes to the Immigration System, describing them as Firm But Fair. The new plans mean it will be harder for anyone arriving in the uk illegally to stay. Our Home Affairs Correspondent june kelly has more. This is what the government is trying to stop. Migrants whove paid thousands of pounds to traffickers for the final perilous leg of theirjourney to the uk. Last year, 8,500 people arrived here by crossing the channel in small boats. The majority of them are said to have claimed asylum. The Home Secretary believes those who come here in this way are rewarded, while others she describes as some of the most vulnerable, never make it to britain. Under what is called the new plan for immigration, the Home Secretary says that if people arrive illegally, it will be harder for them to stay. Those that are allowed to stay will have fewer Family Reunion rights and limited access to benefits. And they will be regularly reassessed for removal from the uk. She is closing off pretty much every door that people might use in order to flee persecution and rebuild their lives safely. Its not what a Refugee Convention really requires, its not what the British Public would, ithink, see as a fair system. The tenth anniversary of the start of the syrian conflict has refocused attention on the conditions people there are enduring and trying to escape. The uk government says under a Resettlement Programme its given a home to 20,000 people from this region. In future, anyone from syria who tries to come here using the Channel Route will not be made welcome. June kelly, bbc news. Well discuss this with the Home Secretary priti patel at half past seven. The third wave of coronavirus sweeping across europe means its still too early to be planning holidays abroad, the Prime Minister and his chief medical adviser have warned. The advice came as the uk marked the anniversary of the first lockdown with lights and candles for the 126,000 lives lost. Jon donnison reports. From belfast to blackpool. Falkirk to cardiff. From countless homes around the uk, to perhaps its most famous one. The United Kingdom lit up to remember the more than 126,000 people whove lost their lives here to covid 19. And a warning from the governments chief medical adviser for england that while uk cases had fallen sharply, the virus is here to stay. I regret to say that i think the chances of eradicating this disease, which means getting rid of it absolutely everywhere, are as close to zero as makes no difference. Weve only achieved eradication of one disease, which is smallpox, with a phenomenally effective vaccine over a very long period of time. But i think if you talk to anybody who looks at this really seriously, who understands how Infectious Diseases work, i dont think theres anybody who thinks eliminating from the uk, or eradicating globally for any long period of time, is a realistic prospect at this point in time. And while more than 28 Million People in the uk have now received a first vaccine dose, progress is much slower in most european countries, many of which are now suffering a third wave of the virus. Thats why people hoping for a long awaited foreign holiday might be disappointed. Most overseas travel is banned until at least mid may. The government now says it will make an announcement on trips abroad from england on april the 5th, a week earlier than expected. The Prime Minister says Summer Holidays this year still look difficult. Jon donnison, bbc news. The Prime Minister has told a private meeting of conservative mps that the uk got its Covid Vaccinations under way so quickly thanks to capitalism and greed. Borisjohnson made the remark during a video call with backbench mps, but immediately withdrew the comment and praised the work of the large pharmaceutical firms. Downing street has declined to comment. A person has died in the floods that have hit eastern australia. Officials have confirmed the fatality, but havent yet released any further details. Local reports suggest a mans body was pulled from a car in the town of glenorie, near some of the worst affected areas. Prince harry has begun a newjob at a professional Coaching Firm in california. Hes become the Chief Impact Officer at betterup, where he says hell be fostering honest and vulnerable conversations about Mental Health. Mark lobel has this report. Months into the role, prince harry is said to be focusing on changing the Global Dialogue on Mental Health. So what does his new boss think of him . I had obviously never talked to royalty before in my life. And i think the most impressive thing has just been his focus singularly on how can he be of service, how can the advance his vision . So i have a feeling that hell work out. What do you call him . Erm. You know, were partners here. He likes to be called harry in the workplace, so we just address him as harry. But one sceptic describes betterup s new Chief Impact Officer as a made up name, solely designed to bring pr sizzle to the San Francisco tech start up. This is a company that does coaching for managers mainly, right . Its mainly Business Coaching and career coaching. And i dont really think that british royalty is particularly well suited for that, to be honest. I dont think those experiences translate very well. So how will harrys new Firm Go Aboutjudging the sixth in line to the throne s progress . Yes, well, lots can be said on the, as we call it in the us, feedback and communication, so i think we wont have any trouble there. The private company is, however, keeping his hours and pay, perhaps understandably, strictly confidential. Mark lobel, bbc news. The Worlds Largest painting which was created by a british artist has been sold, raising a staggering £16 million for International Childrens charities. Sacha jafri spent eight months painting the 1600 square foot artwork inside a deserted Hotel Ballroom in dubai. Hed planned to sell the work in 70 smaller parts, but the whole piece was instead bought by a french cryptocurrency entrepreneur. Its one of the most expensive paintings ever sold at auction by a living artist. I want to know what the plan is with that. Where do you put that . He has not to ut that. Where do you put that . Yes, it seems criminals have taken advantage of our anxieties during the pandemic to try to catch us out. £3115 million has been stolen by fraudsters over the last year. The scams can be very convincing. Millie clark received what she thought was an email from her phone company, asking her to update her payment details. Then, a few days later, the scammers called claiming to be her bank. This time they got her login Security Code and used all the info to clean out her accounts. She lost thousands of pounds. Ijust wasnt on the ball because, you know, my business had just shut because of the pandemic. So, im self employed, ive got no income, the last thing i need is my bills to not be going through. I dont trust anyone now. They still try and ring me even now because i guess once theyve got your details, then theyll keep trying. The impact its had on my Mental Health i mean, i didnt get out of bed for about a week. I just couldnt. I could not face it. I just slept my way through it, because it was the only time i wasnt awake and just panicking. My biggest fear being, on this conversation now, is, are people going to think im stupid for actually. . Do you know what . If i can raise awareness to just one more person who doesnt make the same mistake, then thats a good thing to do, i think. It could happen to anyone. Thankfully, millie managed to get the money back. But as the pandemic leaves more people alone at home, feeling vulnerable, others havent been so fortunate. Police have had to take down several websites selling Counterfeit Testing Kits and masks. One man was even charged with administering a fake vaccine. 0nline Shopping has been a particular target, with fraud rising by 42 since the start of the first lockdown thats an all time high. Perhaps youve been tricked on a dating app . So called Romance Fraud, where victims are conned out of money by people pretending to want a relationship, went up by 20 . So what do you do if you fall victim . Samantha cooper is a private investigator, whos made it her mission to tackle dating scams. People who are victims, they lose their confidence, they lose their ability to make sound judgements. And they wonder how they got into that situation. They become very embarrassed. And unfortunately, you know, the perception of people who have been victims of Romance Fraud is very unfair. And they tend to say things like, you know, they must be stupid. And its really not the case at all. These scammers are very, very sophisticated. And, you know, they use really strong Manipulation Techniques in order to con people. If somebody is coming on too strong, too quickly, then that would be a warning sign. If they are trying to draw you away from the dating app chat to chat on a separate platform, that would also raise alarm bells. Do get in touch if youve been affected. We know the numbers have been going up. Ill be answering some of your questions later in the programme. I will tell you what, even though you might feel humiliated if it has happened to you, its really important it is reported because there is 35 million that has been taken, which only accounts for those that have reported it. We think that might be the tip of the iceberg. 150 arrests were made last year in relation to this type of fraud. It helps the experts build up a better picture of how people are taking advantage. The paper claims the Prime Minister is under pressure to set a date for a Public Inquiry into the governments handling of the pandemic. The i says the ban on holidays abroad is likely to be extended into the summer, with the paper calling it a boost for domestic tourism. The daily mail leads with a photo of the Prime Minister during last nights Downing Street press conference. The paper carries a comment from borisjohnson, saying he will haunted by the covid pandemic as long as he lives. Gone some lovely little articles from the inside pages. This time last year we were waking up to our first full day of lockdown and its been a tough year for so many reasons. But while the pandemic has affected all of us in different ways, its also prompted a shared sense of community. Breakfastsjohn maguire has been speaking to the residents of one street in bristol. From this evening, i must give the british people a very simple instruction you must stay at home. Although the government didnt want us to use the word, it was adopted instantly. Lockdown. On this street as on every other street life changed. Mya is a nurse who works in training. She looks after her grandson and has a daughter with special needs. The past year has proved particularly tough for her. Disabled people particularly have been forgotten very much during this pandemic. Its been very difficult for disabled children and their parent carers losing lots of support that they normally get. And not being able to go anywhere with them with everything closed. Its been really, really hard. I have a lot of friends with profoundly disabled children, so thats been a very difficult aspect of the pandemic, and lockdown in particular, i think, and schools being closed. Lily had a Cataract Operation just days before lockdown started, but has missed out on the usual levels of follow up care. Ive not been able to go to the hospital. Normally, i go quite regularly to the retina and cornea departments. Its been tough for me to not really see my grand. My kids, especially my granddaughter she was, like, two just before christmas. I think thats one of the hardest things for me really, is, you know, not seeing my family. For mary, who was shielding, lockdown has been a mixed blessing. Its been really nice to deepen my relationships with my neighbours. Theres been loads of huge benefits and then theres also been, because im shielding, you know, its been really hard to get food and medicine. And so its been a real extreme of Life Improvements and then very basic things being really hard. It took us about six months to get a regular Delivery Slot for food. And i buy food for me and my neighbour each week. So that was really hard. But Something Else has happened in this street over the past 12 months as the people locked down, they also opened up. Jesse, whose work as an actor and Theatre Director disappeared overnight, decided to lay the foundations of a community. People were really up for things like Street Discos we had. And theres a few italians on the street we had a big Italian Party on the street. Weve had thingsjust like people doing each other s shopping, people swapping plants and seeds and games and puzzles. People with leftover vegetables, people clearing out their houses and offering things. Theres quite a few people on the street who live on their own, so having other people doing their shopping. Somebody right at the other end of the street who i have now met a few times, but before that she was just texting me and i was buying her milk and things like that. Isaac has been working from home and only seen his parents once during the past year, but says neighbours are now filling the void left by restricted contact with family and friends. I guess weve been quite lucky on this street with the Community Spirit and having a Street Whatsapp and a chat, chatting with each other. And bristol had groups that were set up by different postcodes to try and make sure they were like these whatsapp groups and things, Support Groups in the different streets and areas. So i got a little bit involved. Being a data analyst, i got a little bit involved in, like, making a map to kind of plot where there were groups and where there werent across bristol with some other Support Groups. But, yeah, im lucky to have lived in one of the streets where itjust kind of organically happens. The pandemic has changed many lives for the worse. But, as weve worked together to try to defeat its effects, weve also changed many lives for the better. John maguire, bbc news, bristol. Hello, good morning. Its a chilly start to the day with temperatures in low single figures, close to freezing in a good few spots and there are also some patches of mist and fog around, as well. Plenty of cloud about this morning, there is a Weather Front thats moving its way southeastwards gradually and that could give us a few outbreaks of mostly light, patchy rain and drizzle not amounting to very much at all, many of us staying dry. It will be a dry afternoon in store, and that cloud will clear southeastward so there should be some sunshine emerging towards northwestern areas of the capital as we head towards the end of the day. Temperatures still in double figures between 11 and 13 degrees celsius with a fairly light south westerly breeze blowing. Now, as we head through this evening and overnight, then that remaining cloud is set to clear. Therell be lots of clear skies into tomorrow morning so, again, its a cold start to the day temperatures between two and four degrees celsius. Tomorrow, the breeze picks up. Therell be some sunshine around always the chance of one or two showers. Some longer spells of rain, though, on friday. Im back with the latest from the bbc london newsroom in half an hour. They have been talking about that their grave in europe and every time weve seen that we seen a Knock On Effect in this country. Should we be bracing ourselves for another difficult time coming . Well, i think we find ourselves difficult time coming . Mounie, bell. Well, i think we find ourselves in difficult time coming . Mounie, bell. Well, i think we find ourselves in a l well, i think we find ourselves in a slightly different situation this time and i think its very difficult at the moment to compare ourselves to europe. The big thing we have on our side at the moment is our Vaccine Programme, so we have had, as we talk about regularly, and incredibly successful vaccine roll out. More than half of the aduu roll out. More than half of the Adult Population in the uk have now been vaccinated. It is now, as always, it is difficult to compare countries but now we have something really quite different between us and a lot of Mainland Europe because they havent had a successful Vaccine Programme for many reasons. We of course have to very much monitor this situation. There was a lot of talk in the briefing about borders but i think we have to also take some heart from the fact that we have done very well with our vaccines and that is a really big protective factor going forward. So i dont think people should be anxious at the moment but of course it will be closely monitored. The Prime Minister it will be closely monitored. The Prime Minister said it is too early to make plans about going abroad this summer. What are the dangers of foreign travel, even if you have been vaccinated . Foreign travel, even if you have been vaccinated . They talked about the fact that been vaccinated . They talked about the fact that they been vaccinated . They talked about the fact that they now been vaccinated . They talked about the fact that they now recognise the fact that they now recognise that last year, they believed there was a significant amount of covid coming from europe when they didnt fully understand asymptomatic transfer and also there is a lot of recognition that may be at times we didnt fully understand the picture in Different Countries. Because of the testing not being up and running, etc. There is a feeling now that we have a much better understanding about what is going on in the uk, what is going through the borders. When we look at Different Countries in different situations, of course the concern is that if we have millions of people going abroad, which is what normally happens in the summer, then we are going to bring more covid back into the uk. , going to bring more covid back into the uk. , going to bring more covid back into theuk. , the uk. Todays telegraph claims that there are the uk. Todays telegraph claims that there are plans the uk. Todays telegraph claims that there are plans to the uk. First of all, we have not been told vaccinating under 18 is . First of all, we have not been told anything about vaccinating children. There are certain that no plans i am aware of that this is going to start. Certainly not in august. What i do know is that back in february, in the oxford group, they started doing some testing in children, so vaccine testing. The reason to do this is to look at what kind of immune response children build because they are different, their Immune Systems are different, their Immune Systems are different, and also look at how it affects transmission between people if children have been vaccinated. If we compare it may be to that flu vaccine, we know that children are actually at risk of becoming ill with flu but by vaccinating younger children it does really reduce transmission to a higher risk Adult Population. Now we dont know whether this will be the case with covid. We know that children are at low risk, very low risk of becoming significantly unwell, so the study is now are looking at whether they respond to the vaccine and whether it would be a useful thing to protect other people in our population. But certainly i dont think there is any data released yet, and i dont think there are any firm plans to start vaccinating children. ~ ~. , firm plans to start vaccinating children. ~. ,. , children. You know, first thing is, really do is stick to those rules, so it has to be either two households meeting, or six people. One of the two. It really is important that you keep that outside. We note that as soon as you start mixing with other people inside, the risk of Transmitting Covid rises immediately. And i know it is tempting if you have people overin it is tempting if you have people over in the garden and it gets chilly to say, well, whats the harm . Lets go inside the. But it really makes a difference. Of course you could keep to the rules and see a different six people every few hours, but again we have to have an element of common sense about this. Katarina Johnson Thompson fell in love with athletics at her local track in liverpool and now as one of sports biggest stars she wants to help others do the same. As she continues her preparations for the tokyo 0lympics, katarina is setting up her own academy to support aspiring athletes who might otherwise be overlooked. But what was it like juggling growing up with realising her dream to make it to the top . I caught up with her at the place where it all began. It was great to talk to her because she is really mature and knows exactly what she wants and talks really honestly about the struggles she has had just getting to where she has had just getting to where she is now. Have a look. Sport shouldnt be based on anything but talent. It shouldnt be based on what you look like, what circumstances youve got, how much money youve got. To me, sport, in its essence, is literally who can run the fastest from that line to that line. Let me see if i can beat you. Ultimately, im just a big kid still doing that on an Olympic Stage so, kat, were back where it all began were in your home town. Whats it like to be back here . Its really strange, especially to be, you know, on a quiet track. Normally this truck is, like, booming with Young Athletes, like, coaches. This time of year, like, were heading into the spring, which is the summer season, yeah, and this is where we normally get our hard training in. Windy wavertree staying true to its name, windy wavertree, today. I suppose, though, if you can train here, you can make it work anywhere. I used to try and take that to my advantage. I remember thinking that this track really hardened my character. This has definitely made me the athlete who i am. When you advertise for applicants for your academy, youre really specific, arent you, about the type of person that youre looking for . Yeah, for sure. So that sort of drop out range is from 16 to 21. And they have to be from a diverse ethnic background. They have to be, you know, State Schooled and at that county level competition. So i feel like theyre the groups who need most help. You think that, you know, the olympics is a diverse place but i was really surprised to find out that, like, a number of sports were all white. And i think it is a privilege to be able to train alongside living. Think theres a lot of people and Young Athletes out there who could be in the olympic team, could be winning 0lympic medals, butjust havent had the right support along the way. With the academy, you talk about particularly supporting athletes from an ethnically diverse background. Growing up in liverpool, what was that like for you . I dont think that anyones ever purposely went out their way to be nasty to me because of that. I think that its affected me in so many different other ways in my self worth and the way i grew up wanting to look, like, a certain way. I had to change my hair, still felt like i had to, you know, present a certain way. And when i look back, i definitely feel like i changed a lot of myself to try to just blend in and fit in. When i look at social media and i see you and your contemporaries im thinking particularly at the moment of Dina Asher Smith posting trending pictures in, like, the most phenomenalform posting training pictures in, like, the most phenomenalform of your lives. So you think things have changed because now perhaps Young Athletes do you think things have changed because now perhaps Young Athletes coming through can look at you and think, well, actually, thats how i want to look . I do try and post, like, me in the full sort of glory, like when im competing and stuff. Like, there used to be a time when i was maybe early 20s where i would look for pictures where i was less muscly and i wouldnt want to upload them. And, you know, you want to be. You want to ultimately look feminine, but strong can be feminine. How have you managed to cope with the delay in the olympics . The last four years i think. I have been Building Momentum and that ultimately came to its peak in doha. Katarina Johnson Thompson of liverpool shes the World Champion. And i thought i was ready to give more, going into tokyo, which was always the plan. And its literally got halted and. But that is life. I had no sort of control over a pandemic. Theres going to be so many people who would have been Olympic Champion, who isnt going to be 0lympic champion because of this pandemic and i find that fascinating. And i think the olympics will be won and lost on whoever s handled the pandemic the best. Even with the delay and the difficulties of the last year, whats it like going into an Olympic Games as World Champion in your event . For me, knowing that, you know, for a number of years, i didnt think that i could ever win on that sort of global World Champion, championship stage. Ijust know that its possible now so im happy that if its happened before, it can happen again. And thats what you know, thats my sort of beliefs, you know. I know theres a strong chance that i could be outperformed but as long as i do my best, you know, i have no regrets. You see, if you train at windy waiver tray, the coldest track i have ever been to, you can train anywhere toughens you up, windy wavertree. You might be saying, hold, there is no football but it is world cup qualifier. Ladle hold, there is no football but it is world cup qualifier. Hold, there is no football but it is world cup qualifier. We were talking about the euros world cup qualifier. We were talking about the euros around world cup qualifier. We were talking about the euros around the world cup qualifier. We were talking about the euros around the corner. About the euros around the corner but it is world cup qualifying. It was interesting hearing Katarina Johnson thompson talk about her dreams. Gareth bale, you get a sense of how much he loves playing for his country. Belgium might be the worlds number one ranked team. There are reasons to be hopeful. Remember this incredible night, almost five years ago, beating belgium 3 1 in the quarter finals of euro 2016 . What a night that was, what a goal that was. And theres another reason gareth bale, wales talisman, whos determined to lead them to their first world cup since 1958. Its massive for us. We want to try and take this opportunity to. Yeah, to qualify for the world cup. Obviously, we havent done that for a long time and something that all us players dream of doing is playing in the world cup for wales. And, yeah, well give everything we can this campaign to do that. Talk about giving everything. What a result this was in the scottish cup. Brora of the Highland League havent played a game since january because their leagues been suspended. They beat hearts 2 1 scottish cup finalists the past two seasons. The part timers only trained five times and played one friendly in the lead up. Now theyre into the third round. Englands tough time in india continued as they lost their opening one Day International in pune. They were in such a good position to win thanks to some huge hitting from Jonny Bairstow as they chased 318 to win. But the remaining batsmen failed to build on that strong start from the openers, losing by 66 runs. Theyll go again on friday. Sometimes people take, you know, how much quality you have to produce in an International Game to win for granted. You know, you cantjust have a good plan and win a game. Or you cant just learn along the way and lose a game. It has to work simultaneously. Now, Lewis Hamilton and tom brady are two athletes at the top of their game. Hamilton has won seven formula one World Championships while brady has won the super bowl seven times. But could the pair swap sports . In a conversation with james cordon, brady seemed up for it, hamilton less so. Have a listen to this. I got the most beautiful gift. And you know i got the most beautiful gift. There is some fog around, because parts of the south east, in wales, and for the rest of the week, the forecast is simple. Sunshine and showers, Windy At Times and by friday it will be colder and some of those showers will be wintry but mostly on the hills. At the moment, a week when a faulty sinking south with patchy rain on it and a of cloud. Behind that, some showers. Gusty winds, particularly across the north west. Here is our band of cloud and patchy light rain, eventually moving down into the south east after some have a bright start. But brightening up south west england, wales, midlands, Eastern Scotland. West of scotland and Northern Ireland see early showers, replaced by heavier showers coming in through the course of the afternoon. White circles represent average wind speeds, gusts more, some in the north west having gusts of 50 mph today, and temperatures ranging from seven in the north to 13 as we push down towards the south. This evening and overnight, we say goodbye to our first wedding front, the second brings in the showers, pushing south. Then why showers, pushing south. Then why showers coming in across the north and west, but in between there will be clear skies. That will allow temperatures to fall. These temperatures to fall. These temperatures represent what you can expect in towns and cities. In rural areas it will be a bit lower and some could see A Touch Of Frost first thing tomorrow. Tomorrow for many, week where the front in the southeast with patchy rain in moving away. Lots of dry weather, a fair bit of sunshine but also a fair few showers. A lot of those will be across the north and west and not as windy as it is going to be today but it still will be breezy. Temperatures ten in aberdeen, 13 in london, 12 in plymouth. As we move overnight thursday into friday, the Weather Front sinks southwards and on friday that opens the gates colder air coming our way more of a north westerly or a westerly wind so it will be temporarily cold during friday, not so initially in the south east but you will get colder air later on and we have rain pushing across us, showers following on behind, and those are likely to be wintry above about 200 metres. Some of those wintry showers as part south as the moors. The black circles represent the strength of the wind gusts, so that will exacerbate the cold feel of the day, despite the fact that in between the showers will be some sunshine. 11 to 13 perhaps in the south east before the colder air pushes it but it wont last because as we head into the weekend, things will turn that bit milder. Some rain at times in the north and west but the driest conditions likely to be the south and east. Friday is a small blip before we are back to average temperatures once again. I think anyone who has looked at this in the Cold Light Of Day knows the powers in this coronavirus act are not necessary. Lets remember this act was passed in one day as an Emergency Piece of legislation last march. Liberal democrats were prepared to give Government Ministers the benefit of the doubt back then because it was an emergency, we didnt know whether parliament would come back. When we look to those powers and how they are being abused and causing confusion, including amongst the police, we sounded the alarm and so back at the end of the summer, when they first tried to renew this legislation, the Liberal Democrats voted against it then. We wrote to the Prime Minister set out of reasons why we thought this was a bad piece of legislation that had been rushed through parliament and was not actually the powers they needed to deal with the pandemic because they already have them. I am afraid the experience of this act has proven that the Liberal Democrats were right to sound the alarm and ministers really dont need this act. It should not be renewed, we should go back to the table, sit round, as we have promised, and proposed to the government, and we can look at the legislation that they need but this is not that legislation. fine legislation that they need but this is not that legislation. The vast majority of people who want to have Peaceful Assembly of peaceful protest are peaceful. The right to peaceful protest is a basic freedom. It should never have been even taken away in november, the government effectively omitting in their new policy that it shouldnt have been taken away admitting. The Liberal Democrats have long supported the continuation of the right to Peaceful Assembly and if it is done in sensible way, a covid secure way outdoors, it can be done in a way which retains the democratic rights, the basic freedoms, whilst allowing protest in a safe way. They add that women from a minority background rarely garner the same headlines and response. The government of said everyone should be safe from harassment without fear of violence. Im back in half an hour. Plenty more on our website. Now though its back to dan and sally. Bye for now. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with dan walker and sally nugent. 0ur Headlines Today more clashes between police and protestors in bristol, for the second time in three days. You can see maybe up to 100 protesters sitting and standing there, and this line of riot police havent moved for quite a long time. How the police handle protests has been in the headlines since criticism of the metropolitan polices handling of a vigil for Sarah Everard. What has emerged is that the Prime Minister was talking about how the development of vaccines, their Intention Development of vaccines, their intention and their production, was driven intention and their production, was driven by intention and their production, was driven by private commercial companies who are driven themselves by the companies who are driven themselves by the motive of making profits, which by the motive of making profits, which is by the motive of making profits, which is what capitalism and greed is kind which is what capitalism and greed is kind of which is what capitalism and greed is kind of all about, not to sound too much is kind of all about, not to sound too much like an economics professor. We are speaking to the Home Secretary in a few minutes. Over the last few weeks, weve been exploring the impact covid has had on voters across the United Kingdom ahead of a series of crucial elections in may. The government in wales has used its powers to take a different course to the rest of the uk when it comes to the pandemic. But how has that affected how voters feel . Alex forsyth reports. In north wales, wrexham sits just a few miles from the border with england. Local mums carly and becca have always known they live in a border town, but it has become more apparent this past year given the different covid rules in each country. I dont think it was as obvious as it is now. You know, we are all doing our own thing now, which i dont think everybody was aware that we had the power to do before. Its a bit complicated, to be honest. If you listen on the radio, sometimes were so close to the border, sometimes it does change on the english radio when it comes up with the news, and then sometimes its on the north wales news and you just think, oh my gosh, i havent got a clue whats going on but have there been benefits to wales making its own choices in the pandemic . Yes, because i think the numbers in england compared to wales are two completely different things. I think theyve handled it really well. We should be able to make our own decisions but i feel we should work in cooperation with each other. Not far away, the coastal town of rhos 0n sea is popular with tourists. Butjust off the promenade, the peacock lounge sits empty. 0wner philip is frustrated with how his business has been affected by differences in rules. Its made him think there is little point in a welsh parliament. Cardiff is 185 miles away from us. Were 30 minutes from chester. Yet all them tourists from chester are coming here thinking the rules are the same when theyre not. It should have been one person leading and not four parties fighting amongst each other, because thats all its turned out to be. This devolved stuff just isnt working. Many people do support devolution, which is a transfer of powers from westminster to cardiff. Some want wales to have more clout. A debate which has stretched back decades isnt yet settled. This pandemic has really shown how having different governments for different parts of the uk actually works in practice. For some thats been a good thing. For others, less so. But for many people weve spoken to it has made them think about who is best to make the decisions that affect their lives. Further south, we met evan. He believes the pandemic is shown the potential wales has to make more of its own decisions as an independent country. I think with the mindset of independence wales can thrive. Is there much of a need for westminster any more . I dont really think there is. Hell be able to vote for the first time in may, when 16 and 17 year olds can have their say in elections to the welsh parliament. You can see how the older generation, theres that sense of loyalism still there towards the union, the monarchy etc. I think the younger generation, through social media and alternative news, have reached their own conclusions. And i think that is helped independence, the support, rise massively. The idea of independence might have gained momentum, but it is still a minority view. In newport, in the shadow of the road that connects wales to england, stewart is concerned about division in the uk. Im happy for there to be a Welsh Government to look for the heritage parts of wales, i think thats a good thing. But it goes too far. And i think the more power we give them, i think it is going to get. We are part of the United Kingdom, and thats how it should be. The virus has not been bound by borders, but for some its brought them home as different parts of the uk have moved at a slightly different pace. The question is whether or not of that has any political consequence. Alex forsyth, bbc news. Still to come on breakfast. Im back in half an hour. Plenty more on our website. Now, though, its back to dan and sally. Hello, this is breakfast with dan walker and sally nugent. Some of the bristol protests have been about this bill and about how it is going to change the way people can gather from next week, one of the things it will do is to allow the things it will do is to allow the police to set set noise limits for demonstrations, to break them up if they get too loud. It will protect the public, reform the criminaljustice system, ensure there are topic sentences for some of the most abhorrent crimes, and it will protect the police with regards to police governance. Many of these elements in this particular bill were voted for at the general election when we went to the country in december 2019. With regard to protest and public order, the public order legislation is out of date, it was put together in the 1980s, and this is the opportunity, working with the police, i emphasise that, on the development of this draft bill to look at the changes that need to be brought in to help the police when it comes to management of protests and engagement with protesters but also to deal with static protest and noise. fik. That is what we want to stop by changing the system, creating safe and legal roots and bringing in a raft of measures subject to consultation. No home haircuts that stop you can say that again thank you. Good money. Sadly lockdown hair. This morning it is not a bad start to the day clear skies, not a bad start to the day clear skies. But not a bad start to the day clear skies, but this not a bad start to the day clear skies, but this weather not a bad start to the day ciaz skies, but this weather watches picture shows there is some folk around and also some fog across parts of the south east. For the next few days that podcast is one of sunshine and showers. It will be Windy At Times and on friday some of the showers will be wintry, down to about 200 metres. In some of the heavier ones we can see a bit of winteriness in the north, even down to lower levels. Today we have a weak Weather Front seating south, currently producing some patchy light rain across the north midlands down towards the south west and it will eventually get into the south east. In the south east, for some bright start, we have that file and then here comes the cloud and the patchy light rain later on. Behind it for south west england, wales, the midlands, Northern England and Eastern Scotland, there will be a fair bit of sunshine around. To start with, showers in Northern Ireland and also scotland, replaced by heavier showers later and as the heavier showers come in, the wind will strengthen. Gusts as large as 50 mph across parts of the north west. These white circles represent the average wind speeds. Temperatures today, ten in aberdeen and glasgow, 12 in birmingham and cardiff top temperature is likely to be 13 or 14. Through this evening and overnight, we say goodbye is taking its cloudy and patchy rain and the second continues to gain south west and then coming into north west we see another packet of showers. In between there will be some clear skies and the rule areas it will be lower than this, so we could see the pocket of frost. A week with a front coming south tomorrow, the spot of rain. Then we see more showers across the north and west. The wind will not be as strong. A lot of dry weather tomorrow and a fair bit of sunshine, as well. Temperatures getting up to about, again, 12, 13 or maybe 14. As we move from thursday night into friday, we see a change. This Weather Front moves south, taking rain with it, and opens the door to colder air coming rain with it, and opens the door to colderair coming in rain with it, and opens the door to colder air coming in from the north west or indeed the west and you can see how the blues flipped the child, indicating all of us eventually will be bathed in the colder air. Eventually will be bathed in the colderair. Here eventually will be bathed in the colder air. Here is the Weather Front bringing the rain, pushing southwards and his wits. Behind it, sunshine and showers, but the showers, as i mentioned, i likely to be wintry above about 200 metres. Heavier ones in the north could get a lower level. We can see winteriness as far south as the more its in the south west. The black circles represent strength of the wind gusts so that will really accentuate the coalfield of the day because temperatures generally struggling to get into double figures. We see double figures initially in the south east and as the Weather Front go through the cold they will come in behind and the temperature will go down. How long will this last . The south east at the moment looks like it will stay that bit drier. It is all changeable, we need to keep our big coked out but look forward to some warmer weather . Thats right. More cloud and patchy rain heading south east. Details coming up. Its now after midnight here, and weve been in this situation here in bristol for more than an hour and a half now. This was not a comment by the Prime Minister this was not a comment by the Prime Minister about the uks Vaccine Programme on the whole. But the prime programme on the whole. The queens granddaughter zara tindall has given prince harry has begun a newjob at a professional Coaching Firm in california. And i think the most impressive thing has just been his focus singularly on how can he be of service, how can he advance his vision . So i have a feeling that hell work out. What do you call him . Erm. You know, were partners here. He likes to be called harry in the workplace, so we just address him as harry. But one sceptic describes betterups new Chief Impact Officer as a made up name, solely designed to bring pr sizzle to the San Francisco tech start up. This is a company that does coaching for managers mainly, right . Its mainly Business Coaching and career coaching. And i dont really think that british royalty is particularly well suited for that, to be honest. I dont think those experiences translate very well. So how will harrys new Firm Go Aboutjudging the sixth in line to the thrones progress . Yes, well, lots can be said on the, as we call it in the us, the modern performance review. We have a really open relationship and constant feedback and communication, so i think we wont have any trouble there. The private company is, however, keeping his hours and pay, perhaps understandably, strictly confidential. Mark lobel, bbc news. The queens granddaughter zara tindall has given birth to a baby boy. Congratulations. Great news this morning. Carol has the weather. We like to bring you some good news to start your Weather Forecast. Thats excellent. Lovely news. Thank you. Good morning. The Weather Forecast has got some good and bad news in it, depending on your point of view. For the rest of this week were looking at essentially sunshine and showers. But by friday, as you see from this, some of them will be wintry, mostly above 200 metres. But in some of the heavier bursts we could see it getting down to lower levels. Today though we have got a week by the front which is crossing the midlands, heading south eastwards, taking this cloud and patchy rain. Part of the southeast and wales starting with some fog. That would be eradicated in the south east by that loud. You can see how it brighten up in south west england. Also through wales, the midlands and also Northern England. For Northern Ireland and scotland there are a few showers this morning. They will be replaced later by this line of heavier showers coming in. And also gusty winds. Eastern scotland are staying dry with some sunny skies. Gusts of wind could reach 50 mph across parts of the north west. And here in stornoway we are looking at a top temperature of eight. As we come down towards hull, norwich and london, we are looking at 13. This evening and overnight we say goodbye to that Weather Front. We have a line of showers moving south across england and wales. More showers piling on across Northern Ireland and Western Scotland. In between there will be some clear skies. It is going to be a cold night. These temperatures represent towns and cities in rural areas. We could wake up cities in rural areas. We could wake up to some pockets of frost. Tomorrow, cloud clearing from the south east with patchy rain. A day of sunshine and showers. Most in the north and west. Temperatures up to 14 in hull. Thank you, carol. You will enjoy this next bit. It is one of sallys chats with a sporting soup or superstar. I chats with a sporting soup or superstar we should put mine and carols chats on the telly. That would make headlines. Katarina Johnson Thompson fell in love with athletics at her local track in liverpool, and now as one of the sports biggest stars, she wants to help others do the same. Now, as she continues her preparations for the tokyo olympics, katarina is setting up her own academy to support aspiring athletes who might otherwise be overlooked. But what was it like juggling growing up, with realising her dream to make it to the top . I caught up with her at the place where it all began. Sport shouldnt be based on anything but talent. It shouldnt be based on what you look like, what circumstances youve got, how much money youve got. For me, sport, in its essence, is literally who can run the fastest from that line to that line. It is i suppose, though, if you can train here, you can make it work anywhere. I used to try and take that to my advantage. I remember thinking that this track really hardened my character. I feel like ive ifeel like ive gone i feel like ive gone a little ifeel like ive gone a little bit soft now. I brought my hot water bottle today. Im used to training in the sun in southern france. This has definitely made me the athlete who i am. Is that why you have decided to try and support kids who want to go to the next level, but perhaps cant . To be able to do sport alongside school is a luxury. Especially when you get to that age, 16 to 21, there are so many dropouts. I feel like the people i trained on this track with today, im last one standing because there are so many different distractions. I was very lucky i got to compete at the london 2012 olympics. That is when i realised this is what its all about. Ever since then i wanted to be a full time athlete and experienced this again. I had a lot of help to get there. I want to give that help back. When you advertise for applicants for your academy, youre really specific, arent you, about the type of person that youre looking for . They have to be from a diverse ethnic background. They have to be, you know, State Schooled and at that county level competition. So i feel like theyre the groups who need most help. You think that, you know, the olympics is a diverse place but i was really surprised to find out that, like, a number of sports were all white. And i think it is a privilege to be able to train alongside. I think theres a lot of people and Young Athletes out there who could be in the olympic team, could be winning olympic medals, butjust havent had the right support along the way. When you say you wanted to change the way you look, how did you want to look . It the way you look, how did you want to look . ,. ,. , to look . It was ust what was portrayed to look . It was ust what was portrayed on to look . It was just what was portrayed on the to look . It was just what was portrayed on the tv. To look . It was just what was portrayed on the tv. You to look . It was just what was i portrayed on the tv. You would to look . It was just what was portrayed on the tv. You would never see a hair advert with your natural hair. You grow up knowing you look different from everyone else. I was an athlete, i was quite muscular and i was always told. I felt like i was definitely the odd one out. I always used to be like a head above everybody else as well. I felt very isolated when i didnt have anybody to bounce off and talk about it too. Nobody look like me. What would you say to that younger version of yourself now . I say to that younger version of yourself now . Say to that younger version of yourself now . I would say dont relax your yourself now . I would say dont relax your hair. Yourself now . I would say dont relax your hair. Dont yourself now . I would say dont relax your hair. Dont dye yourself now . I would say dont relax your hair. Dont dye it yourself now . I would say dont| relax your hair. Dont dye it red. It will take years to grow back when i look at social media and i see you and your contemporaries im thinking particularly at the moment of Dina Asher Smith posting training pictures in, like, the most phenomenalform of your lives. Do you think things have changed because now perhaps Young Athletes coming through can look at you and think, well, actually, thats how i want to look . Its really great that is a thing. How do you deal with the negative side of social media . Istate how do you deal with the negative side of social media . How do you deal with the negative side of social media . We have seen a lot in football side of social media . We have seen a lot in football at side of social media . We have seen a lot in football at the side of social media . We have seen a lot in football at the minute. Side of social media . We have seen a lot in football at the minute. And lot in football at the minute. And it is disgusting. Like, you think that things are getting better. Footballers are saying things are getting worse and i do believe that is because you have direct contact with whoever you are trying to sort of abuse. I think social media, with its pressures as well, everyone posting their perfect life, it can be a lot. Just put it on mute sometimes. Be a lot. Just put it on mute sometimes. ,. , sometimes. How have you coped with the delay in sometimes. How have you coped with the delay in the sometimes. How have you coped with the delay in the olympics. Sometimes. How have you coped with the delay in the olympics. It sometimes. How have you coped with the delay in the olympics. It was the delay in the olympics. It was hard. Theres going to be so many people who would have been Olympic Champion, who isnt going to be Olympic Champion because of this pandemic and i find that fascinating. I think the olympics will be won and lost on whoever s handled the pandemic the best. I have to say, she is in a really good place mentally. I have to say, she is in a really good place mentally. Shes had maor disappointment d good place mentally. Shes had maor disappointment at d good place mentally. Shes had maor disappointment at major i disappointment at major championships. To come back from that and to be in much better headspace, is going forward. One of the things that has headspace, is going forward. One of the things that has really headspace, is going forward. One of the things that has really helped the things that has really helped her is giving back. She is hoping to help kids who are a certain level in all sorts of different sports, keep going at an age when they might drop out. That has helped her enormously. She is very calm and focus going into the tokyo olympics. It is 21 minutes past eight. You are watching breakfast. Were not out of the woods yet. That was the message coming from the Prime Minister and his chief advisers at yesterdays Downing Street briefing, as they warned of a third wave of coronavirus crossing from Mainland Europe into the uk. Lets try to get a better idea of how we might prevent that with professor neil ferguson, the epidemiologist whose predictions prompted the uk to go into its first lockdown a year ago. Good morning. Thank you for being with us. Our viewers will have heard the Prime Minister talk about the third wave and saying that it might wash up on our shores. How likely is that . What should we be doing to protect ourselves . I that . What should we be doing to protect ourselves . That . What should we be doing to protect ourselves . I think the real risk is that protect ourselves . I think the real risk is that the protect ourselves . I think the real risk is that the new protect ourselves . I think the real risk is that the new variants protect ourselves . I think the real risk is that the new variants which | risk is that the new variants which are spreading in europe at a low level. Are spreading in europe at a low level. We are spreading in europe at a low level, we are particularly thinking here of level, we are particularly thinking here of the south african variant, that has here of the south african variant, that has a here of the south african variant, that has a risk of undermining our vaccination that has a risk of undermining our Vaccination Programme, we may get increased Vaccination Programme, we may get increased importation of those variants increased importation of those variants into the country. What europe variants into the country. What europe is variants into the country. What europe is now seeing is effectively what we europe is now seeing is effectively what we saw back in november. They are seeing what we saw back in november. They are seeing an epidemic driven by the ukvariant. Are seeing an epidemic driven by the uk variant, the counter variant, spreading uk variant, the counter variant, spreading very rapidly across the continent spreading very rapidly across the continent. That is already happening to us and continent. That is already happening to us and we are through to the other to us and we are through to the other side to us and we are through to the other side. The real concern is things other side. The real concern is things like other side. The real concern is things like the south african variant, things like the south african variant, where the Vaccination Programme we are currently using, Whilst Programme we are currently using, whilst it programme we are currently using, whilst it would still give some protection against that, the protection against that, the protection would be reduced. | protection against that, the protection would be reduced. I know this is a difficult protection would be reduced. I know this is a difficult question protection would be reduced. I know this is a difficult question to this is a difficult question to answer, and when we ask this of politicians, particularly Government Ministers at the moment they are not keen to give specific data, but there were those dates put down provisionally in that uk road map to coming out of the virus, it seems that they will have to shift if it does indeed, if what is happening in europe, comes back to the uk . I would say its unlikely we will see ust would say its unlikely we will see just because case numbers are rising in europe. Just because case numbers are rising in europe, we will see case numbers rising in europe, we will see case numbers rising here in europe, we will see case numbers rising here. What is happening here is driven rising here. What is happening here is driven by rising here. What is happening here is driven by the control measures we have in is driven by the control measures we have in place is driven by the control measures we have in place and the fact that we have have in place and the fact that we have rolled out vaccination very fast have rolled out vaccination very fast so have rolled out vaccination very fast. So we are in a very different position fast. So we are in a very different position to fast. So we are in a very different position to most european countries. We vaccinated more than twice the proportion we vaccinated more than twice the proportion of the population than any other proportion of the population than any other european country has done. We are any other european country has done. We are in any other european country has done. We are in a any other european country has done. We are in a better place from that point we are in a better place from that point of we are in a better place from that point of view. I dont thinkjust because point of view. I dont thinkjust because case numbers are rising in europe because case numbers are rising in europe it because case numbers are rising in europe it necessarily throws our timetable europe it necessarily throws our timetable into doubt. But it may do is affect timetable into doubt. But it may do is affect planning around restrictions on International Travel with how restrictions on International Travel with how much we try to screen people with how much we try to screen people coming into the country. The prime people coming into the country. Tue Prime Minister people coming into the country. Tu2 Prime Minister also said a while ago that they hope would be this will be the final lockdown that we experience in the uk. When you look across at what is happening in continental europe, is that a safe prediction . I know you are saying it may not be the case that those cases necessarily come here, but do you feel that we are not out of the woods yet . I feel that we are not out of the woods yet . Europe isjust two or three months behind us in terms of what three months behind us in terms of what they three months behind us in terms of what they are seen with transmission. We always need to remain transmission. We always need to remain vigilant about the fact is we have vaccinated nearly 45 of the population. And we are rolling out the vaccine population. And we are rolling out the vaccine very fast. While no vaccine the vaccine very fast. While no vaccine is the vaccine very fast. While no vaccine is perfect, it will give a high vaccine is perfect, it will give a high level vaccine is perfect, it will give a high level of protection. As long as we keep high level of protection. As long as we keep to high level of protection. As long as we keep to the road map and follow the data. We keep to the road map and follow the data, and policies are derived from the data, and policies are derived from what the data, and policies are derived from what we see on the ground, we have a from what we see on the ground, we have a very from what we see on the ground, we have a very good chance of being able to have a very good chance of being able to relax measures and not need to tighten able to relax measures and not need to tighten up. One can never give a castiron to tighten up. One can never give a cast iron guarantee. This virus has thrown cast iron guarantee. This virus has thrown up cast iron guarantee. I know it is a difficult question to answer, but you can appreciate that our viewers, were reflecting yesterday on a year since the first lockdown, and it is notjust about wanting to go on holiday, it is about wanting to get back to some sort of normality. I about wanting to get back to some sort of normality. Sort of normality. I have always said it is not sort of normality. I have always said it is not going sort of normality. I have always| said it is not going to be an event, it is going said it is not going to be an event, it is going to said it is not going to be an event, it is going to be a process, a gradual it is going to be a process, a gradual getting back to normality. Im optimistic we will be able to start im optimistic we will be able to start seeing each other again in the next month, which is within the road map plan next month, which is within the road map plan. And i am personally looking map plan. And i am personally looking forward to a haircut, which will be looking forward to a haircut, which will be a looking forward to a haircut, which will be a nice side of normality. Depending on what happens in other areas, travel on what happens in other areas, travel may on what happens in other areas, travel may be one of the later things travel may be one of the later things to travel may be one of the later things to be relaxed. But whilst not everything things to be relaxed. But whilst not everything will be back to normal, by the everything will be back to normal, by the summer, certainly by the autumn, by the summer, certainly by the autumn, it by the summer, certainly by the autumn, it will feel a lot more normat autumn, it will feel a lot more normal. . ,. , , normal. And one of the things being reported in the papers this normal. And one of the things being reported in the papers this morning| reported in the papers this morning is potential for children reported in the papers this morning is potentialfor children being vaccinated from august, although the government are seen quite clearly that the decision has not been made on that yet. What is the argument around vaccination of children . When this was first, when we first talked about vaccines, remember speaking to the Health Secretary and he said that wouldnt happen. 50. The Health Secretary and he said that wouldnt happen. The Health Secretary and he said that wouldnt happen. So, there are two key things that wouldnt happen. So, there are two key things here. That wouldnt happen. So, there are two key things here. First that wouldnt happen. So, there are two key things here. First of that wouldnt happen. So, there are two key things here. First of all, two key things here. First of all, children two key things here. First of all, children with some notable exceptions, small minority groups with vulnerabilities, most children dont with vulnerabilities, most children dont get with vulnerabilities, most children dont get seriously ill, but particularly older children, teenagers, we know, can transmit the virus and teenagers, we know, can transmit the virus and contribute to transmission. The rationale for vaccinating particularly older children, teenagers, would be to reduce children, teenagers, would be to reduce transmission. And also protect reduce transmission. And also protect them from when they become older~ protect them from when they become older. There is irrational. The problem older. There is irrational. The problem at the moment is all the kind of problem at the moment is all the kind of scientific studies, the clinical kind of scientific studies, the Clinical Trials of the vaccine to date Clinical Trials of the vaccine to date, were done in adults. We are having date, were done in adults. We are having to date, were done in adults. We are having to catch up. There are currently having to catch up. There are currently studies under way to make sure the currently studies under way to make sure the vaccines are very safe in children sure the vaccines are very safe in children and sure the vaccines are very safe in children and they work. We expect they wilt children and they work. We expect they will. And at that point, when they will. And at that point, when the data they will. And at that point, when the data comes in, we will be able to evaluate the data comes in, we will be able to evaluate whether we want to go forward to evaluate whether we want to go forward vaccinating children. Chris whi and forward vaccinating children. Chris whitty and patrick forward vaccinating children. ct 3 whitty and Patrick Vallance forward vaccinating children. t 3 whitty and Patrick Vallance talking about the need for boosterjabs in the autumn. Is that something you are anticipating . Are anticipating . Absolutely. I think that are anticipating . Absolutely. I thinkthat will are anticipating . Absolutely. We dont think that will be critical. We dont know how long immunity lasts from the dont know how long immunity lasts from the vaccines that are given, but natural from the vaccines that are given, but Natural Immunity probably lights lasts but Natural Immunity probably lights lasts a but Natural Immunity probably lights lasts a year or so. It is entirely lasts a year or so. It is entirely likely we will need to boost entirely likely we will need to boost immunity. We cant stop things like the boost immunity. We cant stop things like the brazilian and the south african like the brazilian and the south african variant forever. They are different african variant forever. They are different immunologically. The current different immunologically. The current vaccines are not as effective current vaccines are not as effective against those strains. For that reason as well we want to update that reason as well we want to update vaccines to boost immunity. And also, update vaccines to boost immunity. And also, yesterday we were speaking to the Health Secretary about that when your reflection, a death toll of 126,000 plus, which is a number its hard to get your head around. Looking back, i know it is easy to judge things with hindsight, do you think if we were to be in that position again, then we would have locked down a lot quicker and been more stringent in those early days of the virus back in march, when the lockdown was first announced . I mean, i think this is the sort of thing mean, i think this is the sort of thing and mean, i think this is the sort of thing and enquiry needs to look at in detait thing and enquiry needs to look at in detail. Its easy to make glib conclusions. There is one key conclusion conclusions. There is one key conclusion which we can reach. Patrick conclusion which we can reach. Patrick vallance and i completely agree Patrick Vallance and i completely agree on Patrick Vallance and i completely agree on this. That is around the ability agree on this. That is around the ability to agree on this. That is around the ability to scale up testing against any new ability to scale up testing against any new virus that comes up. Our biggest any new virus that comes up. Our biggest problem injanuary, biggest problem in january, february, biggest problem injanuary, february, early march, was that we had limited february, early march, was that we had limited testing, so we had a limited had limited testing, so we had a limited idea of what was going on, and we limited idea of what was going on, and we had limited idea of what was going on, and we had basically an impossible choice and we had basically an impossible choice do and we had basically an impossible choice. Do we try to test a very small choice. Do we try to test a very small subset of travellers coming in from some small subset of travellers coming in from some countries . We cant test them from some countries . We cant test them alt from some countries . We cant test them alt 0r from some countries . We cant test them all. Or do we focus testing in hospitals them all. Or do we focus testing in hospitals to get a sense of how much infaction hospitals to get a sense of how much infection is hospitals to get a sense of how much infection is already in the country. We knew infection is already in the country. We knew we would not be picking up everything we knew we would not be picking up everything coming in. And that, beyond everything coming in. And that, beyond everything else, meant we had too little beyond everything else, meant we had too Little Information to go on to judge too Little Information to go on to judge for too Little Information to go on to judge, for instance, the timing of when judge, for instance, the timing of when to judge, for instance, the timing of when to introduce lockdown. Therell be some sunshine around always the chance of one 0 two showers. Some longer spells of rain, though, on friday. Im back in half an hour. Plenty more on our website. If youve had a suspicious text or phone call asking you for money recently, then youre not alone. Millions of pounds have been stolen in scams this year. Ninas been taking a look. We had so many messages from people. Looking at the e mails, they are still coming in. We have had dozens and you said it happened to you yesterday at what has happened over the past year, with the pandemic they are getting more and more sophisticated, more difficult to work out if they are legitimate or not. Weve had dozens of emails from viewers this morning whove seen an increase in scamming attempts over covid. More people alone, at home, feeling vulnerable and criminals have been taking advantage of that. Around £34. 5 million has been stolen by fraudsters over the last year. And they can be so convincing. We spoke to millie. By contacting her once on email, then again by the phone pretending to be her phone company, then her bank, they harvested enough information to clean thousands from her accounts. Ijust couldnt. I could not face it. Ijust slept my way through it, because it was the only time i wasnt awake and just panicking. My biggest fear being, on this conversation now, is, are people going to think im stupid for actually. . Do you know what . If i can raise awareness tojust one more person who doesnt make the same mistake, then thats a good thing to do, i think. Big thanks because that isnt easy. You managed to get her money back. Millie managed to get the money back. But others havent been so fortunate. Police are battling to bring down websites selling fake covid testing kits and masks. One man was even charged with giving out a fake jab. Were shopping online much more making it a top target. 0nline fraud has risen by 42 since march. Its now at an all time high. And Romance Fraud where people are conned out of cash by those pretending to want a relationship is up by a fifth. So what do you do to stop yourself falling victim . Martyn james is a Consumer Rights expert and gave us his top tips. The fraudsters are looking to con you out of your personal details or get access to your bank account, so many of the Text Messages or e mails that come from scammers are often linked to topical news events or things that might be of relevance to you like covid jabs. Always be really, really cynical about messages that you receive unsolicited. Dont click on the links go on to the official website first and double checkjust to see if the request is legitimate. You should not be asked for your personal details, and never for your bank account details. Thanks so much for your questions this morning. Well start with maria. Shes critically vulnerable and has been inundated by scammers from insurance companies. She wants to know how they got her info. Martyn says there are two things at play here. Firstly it could be pot luck. Hsbc say thousands of texts will go out pretending to be from them, and a proportion will be their customers. But also stolen information is being traded online. You can find out what Companies Know about you by making a subject access claim. But hacking is more common so regularly change your passwords. I know its a pain trish says shes had a few calls claiming that her National Insurance number has been used in fraud and that the caller can help her out. She wants to know how she can tell if those offering help are real. Martyn says fraudsters are brilliant at imitating experts. So the best thing to do is ask them, can i get your email address and number and phone you back . If theyre legitimate theyll help you do that and you can check their details. Fraudsters wont. And finally b hampton wants to know what happens to scammers. They say we hear about scams, but not really anything about them being prosecuted and punished. Martyn says this is a real issue. Action fraud say we dont know the half of whats really happening and that scammers know that they are unlikely to be found and prosecuted because the area of law is underresourced. But this is where we can all help by reporting our experiences to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau but also just by using word of mouth. Big thanks to angela for getting in touch. She said, i was a victim of Romance Fraud. After a long process the scammer was prosecuted and is now serving 32 months. She says, anyone who says we were stupid doesnt know what they would do in the same situation. That is a really important thing to say, it can happen to anyone. Some of the experience we are covering, family said their computer screen froze and microsoft said call us urgently or your computer will be frozen and they managed to take all the information from the computer. Someone else who bought a gift card from a shop, called the money to get that bid to get the money and it turned out to be fake. The advice i felt was really good if you ask them for their E Mail Address and that they are legitimate they will give you the details. Its they are legitimate they will give you the details. We are going to talk about mars now just over a month ago, the perseverance rover landed on the surface of mars. Its mission was to find out if life ever existed on the red planet. And for such a big task, scientists are calling on a little help from something called ingenuity a helicopter so small its the size of a chihuahua. Well find out more about its first flight in a moment, but first, lets bring you up to date with the story of the mars mission so far. I now have visions of applying to our of a flying and lift off. Lastjuly, perseverance launched into space. Destination, mars. After successfully landing. Touchdown confirmed perseverance safely on the surface of mars. Its been taking lots of pictures of its new home. In its search for evidence of life, perseverance will need a little help. Meet ingenuity, the first helicopter on mars. It will study cliffs and craters places that perseverance cant reach. Its actually so small its travelling in perseverances belly and will soon come out of hiding. If the flight is successful it could pave the way for more flying robots on mars in the future. Joining us to tell us more about ingenuity is professor Andrew Coates who is part of the perseverance camera team. Good morning. Looks fascinating. Give us an idea of what sort of work this tiny helicopter will do yellow this tiny helicopter will do yellow this is really a Technology Test, they are Testing Technology for future missions, but they are Testing Technology for future missions, future missions, but the little helicopter future missions, but the little helicopter is future missions, but the little helicopter is amazing, future missions, but the little helicopter is amazing, i future missions, but the little helicopter is amazing, i get i helicopter is amazing, i get chihuahua size or the size of a tissue box depending on your viewpoint. It has two protest that will count at about 2400 rpm, eight ten times what the normal helicopter does rotors. The atmosphere is very thin, less than 1 of the atmospheric pressure of the earth. The rotors have to go really fast to get this light helicopter, which on earth weighs 1. 8 kilos, but on marist it weighs less than one bag of sugar because gravity is lower on mars. It will go off the ground about three metres, then up to five metres later on in about five test flights. It is Testing Technology for future flights. It is Testing Technology forfuture missions. It is not part of the live hunt on this mission but it is a Technology Test which will take about one month to do, so april will be spent doing this and i think the first date for the likely flight on mars will be the 8th of april. What has been done with the rover is to move it to get stereo views and things like that to make sure they are the right size and that there is a good enough helipad, an airfield, which is about ten metres by ten metres and be helipad itself is about three metres by three metres. What happens now is that the helicopter is still underneath the belly of the rover so that will moving in the next few days to the helipad location, drop it off, it has to reorientate it, drop it onto the surface, leave it by itself. This is a tiny helicopter on the surface which has to survive by itself, cold nights go down to 90 by itself, cold nights go down to 90 celsius. It has solar panels to charge the battery. 90 celsius.
