Serves but i know many people will have been very disappointed. But as i say, i think it is very premature. The government has set up a task force to look at these issues and we are contributing that and putting our ideas in about how we can stage a restart of International Travel over the summer months and i think that really needs to be the focus rather than talking in the press about the prospects of travel over the summer. You say premature but perhaps realistic, you know, bearing in mind that we have got new variants and weve got many countries in europe going back into lockdown. The government has been very clear and we support the view that it is going to take a cautious approach into reopening International Travel. It has already demonstrated that cautious approach as aviation was the only sector not to have its own road map just over a month ago. We are waiting for a report of the Global Travel taskforce on the 12th Of April and the government has already been clear that International Travel cannot restart until the 17th of may, so we are some months away from the 17th of may. We are probably four months away from the peak summer season. There is time and there is an opportunity to come up with a framework to enable safe travel over the summer, we believe. You have had a terrible year alongside so many other aviation groups. I was just reading that you have announced 900 job losses. You have had the furlough scheme. What more do you need to . We do need this framework from the government and i think we need to have the framework which enables the restart of travel, just as soon as that is possible to do in a safe way. That is why i think it is extremely disappointing to hear some of the view is that we have, which do seem to prejudge or at least seem to be quite premature about the prospects of travel over the summer. These are peoples jobs first and foremost. There are i Million People working in jobs supported by the uk Aviation Industry and there are peoples hopes about travel in the summer. I know from people that i talk to, just how desperate people are to take that opportunity to travel abroad. So, these negative comments being set aside, we are hopeful that the task falls will set out a positive path ahead potentially with some stages to recovery. We might not get everything up and running straightaway but by the time we get into the peaks of the season, we would be very hopeful that the Vaccination Programme in the uk and abroad will have delivered a great deal of immunity and a safe way to travel. It seems logical that some sort of Vaccination Passport Scheme will have to existjust to get all International Countries on the same page. Do you want to hear the British Government committed as more than they are at the moment . We do. We think that will be an important part of the framework. Certification around vaccination or around recovery from covid i9 or that you have had a negative test. I think those will be important components of a new framework. The government is working hard on this. We know that because we are working with them on the solutions and trying to design them. We hope to see those come through in the travel Task Force Report on the 12th Of April. The government warns the European Union not to block Coronavirus Vaccine exports, to the uk. Ministers say the eu risks Reputational Damage, if it stands in the way of shipments. The grown up thing would be for the European Commission, and some of the european leaders, to not indulge in rhetoric but to recognise the obligations that we all have, pull together, where can we maximise supply and help roll out that supply. Yesterday saw another record breaking number of vaccinations in the uk, nearly 900,000. Also on the programme a warning that facemasks and some social distancing could be with us for years. Oh, my goodness. Parts of South East Australia are hit by the worst flooding, in decades. Flooding in decades. Balogun helped it on and its in from alfredo morelos. And rangers remain unbeaten, drawing with celtic in todays Old Firm Derby. In todays Old Firm Derby. Good afternoon. The government has warned the European Union, that any attempt to block the export of Coronavirus Vaccine to the uk, would be counterproductive. The defence secretary, ben wallace, told the bbc theres a risk of Reputational Damage to the eu, if it stops vaccines manufactured on the continent from leaving. But frustration is widespread in some eu countries that theyre not receiving the doses they need. It comes as yesterday saw another record breaking number of vaccinations in the uk. Heres our political correspondent, ben wright. Protection against covid delivered at pace. Yesterday, just over 873,000 people received a jab, a second record in as many days. More than half of uk adults have had Theirfirst Dose and than half of uk adults have had their first dose and infection rates are falling. But in europe, rising cases and slow take up of the vaccine has seen restrictions reimposed in some countries and lead to a warning last week by the European Commission it could block Vaccine Exports including the uk. There was no retreat from that threat today. There was no retreat from that threat today threat today. What is terribly important threat today. What is terribly important this threat today. What is terribly important this week, threat today. What is terribly important this week, there i threat today. What is terribly j important this week, there is threat today. What is terribly i important this week, there is an increase in infections in europe alarming for everybody but the leaders will meet this week and they will make an assessment of the Current Situation about the roll out of vaccines and perhaps make decisions. As the president of the Commission Said herself, everything is on the table, but there is no decision. , ,. ,. , decision. Despite the crosschannel tension, decision. The government and the united kingdom. Tia government does expect and the united kingdom. Ti2 government does expect a big drop in Vaccine Supply next month but insists all adults will be offered a firstjab by the end ofjuly. The speed of the uks Vaccine Roll Out has hardened calls by some tory mps for Lockdown Restrictions in english to be lifted sooner. They will be vocal this week when mps get a vote on renewing the governments Emergency Powers for another six months. But ministers insist their road map must remain cautious and that applies to any Summer Holidays people might be planning. The very earliest date people will be allowed to travel abroad is maybe i7th earliest date people will be allowed to travel abroad is maybe 17th and with infection rates rising in some european countries, the chance of a getaway might be shrinking maybe 17th. Theres still hope that some holidays can happen but its by means guaranteed. By no means guaranteed. Ben wright, bbc news. With no further clarity yet on foreign holidays or travel to visit family abroad, with infections rising in europe, theres a warning that some coronavirus restrictions could last for years. 0ur health correspondent, jim reed, has more. This weekend, more than 1,000,000 doses of corona virus vaccine are likely to be given across the uk. The question is, how quickly will that allow us to unlock society and return to normality . Today, one of englandss most senior doctors warned masks and social distancing might need to continue for some yea rs. Certainly, for a few years. At least until other parts of the world are as well vaccinated as we are and the numbers have come down everywhere. Thats when we may be able to go very gradually back. One of the concerns that doctors and the scientist have are varients. All viruses constantly mutate. Most changes are not a worry but vaccines use the gene from the spike protein on the outside of the virus to train the immune system. So if this mutates, as it has done in the variants first found in brazil and in particular, south africa, it may make the virus less visible to the protective antibodies generated by the vaccine. Surge testing that this has found around 300 cases of the South African Variant in the uk so far. In france, the level is much higher with around 5000 cases in the last week alone. Its one reason why some scientists have said foreign travel might not be possible this summer. 0thers be possible this summer. Others think some form of vaccine passport might be needed. For think some form of vaccine passport might be needed. Might be needed. For example, the south african might be needed. For example, the South African Variant, might be needed. And it is likely that the death rate, for example, if you do get the illness, the new variant, it will not be as harming. Scientists say the Vaccine Roll Out in the uk is now starting to pay off. But returning to normal life will depend, very much, and what also happens in the rest of the world. Depend on. Jim reed, bbc news. Our business correspondent, katy austin is here. The 17th of may is the earliest possible date that International Leisure trips could be aloud but that isnt guaranteed. We dont know exactly what rules will be put in place to enable that restart. A Government Task force is looking at that at the moment and is expected to report back on the 12th Of April. 0ne moment and is expected to report back on the 12th Of April. One idea i think is being considered is classifying destinations under a Traffic Light System of risk, bit like what we saw last year. For months, tens of thousands of farmers have been protesting in india. Their movement has attracted global support, from celebrities including rihanna, lily singh, and the climate activist greta thunberg. So why are the farmers protesting . The bbc s south asia correspondent Rajini Vaidyanathan explains what its all about. From their fields and their land, they came on tractors, trucks and horseback. In a road side resistance, of farmers determined to peacefully protest new laws. Its become the biggest challenge facing indias Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Government is not listening to us. Government is so stubborn. All of those farmers, and a ten acres, they will die. Tensions have been building for months. It is a fight over the future of farming in india. You just throw them to the wolves . No 0ld versus new. So, what started the stand off . And who will win . This is the national highway 1m. It is usually a busy road into the indian capital, delhi. And now it is busy for a very different reason. This place is packed with protesters. Mostly farmers from the neighbouring states of punjab, haryana and uttar pradesh. They went allowed into the Capital City Delhi and so they set up camp here. They have been here through the bitterly cold winter, protesting three Government Farm laws that they believe will destroy them. Now, ifirst came here at the beginning of december and this camp has grown in size since then. It is basically a mini city, a mini town, a mini community. People are living here. They are sleeping on the back of their truck, they are eating here. There are hospitals. There is even a gym here. It is a sign, clearly, that they are in this for the long run. This farmer made the seven hour journey from his farm in punjab to join the protest. He told me he has been sleeping at the back of this truck through indias cold winter months. Many people have died due to the harsh weather conditions. Agriculture matters in india. Not only does it feed this vast nation, it is a big source of employment. Four in ten indians worker as farmers with more than half of the country depending on agriculture as their main source of income. As the months have gone on, what i found striking is how what began as a male dominated protest has become more female. While women make up a large chunk of indias farm workers, only a small percentage own any land. Seen but rarely heard. They are becoming a powerful voice in these protests. Its opposition to three new agricultural laws that were passed last year which has fuelled this movement. The first is all about giving Farmers Freedom of choice by allowing them to sell to anyone, anywhere in india. At the moment, farmers sell their produce through local government regulated markets with a guaranteed minimum price. Under the new law, these Wholesales Market will still exist but farmers will also be able to sell directly to businesses. The government says that farmers will be better off by having more options but farmers fear that once corporations are involved, Price Guarantees will disappear. The second law sets the rules for how farmers draw up contracts with businesses. Things like setting a price for crops before they are even planted. The third, allows private businesses to stockpile basic crops like lentils, onions and potatoes. Until now, only the government was able to store large reserves of these. It means private companies can buy these in bulk. Farmers fear this will impact prices even further. To get a better understanding of what is driving the protests, we took a trip out to a farm. Agriculture is seen as the backbone of this nation. But its contribution to indias economy has been shrinking. And despite Government Subsidies to help farmers, their incomes have also fallen. This family has been working these fields in the state of haryana for generations. The 64 year old has been at the protest every night. He invited me to his farm to explain why this issue matters so much to him. At the end ofjanuary, as farmers marched to the capital delhi, in a show of strength against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, things turned ugly. What started as a clash of opinions over these laws, descended into chaos. Hundreds of police and protesters were injured. Farmers say the police were heavy handed. Officials say protesters didnt stick to the agreed route in time. And then came this. Protesters push their way into delhis iconic red fort, a symbol of power for centuries and a sign of indias strength. Many were left wondering whether the countrys Prime Minister had lost control of this issue. At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was hosting the annual republic day parade. The leader, who won a second term in a landslide increasingly challenged by this crisis. Nicknamed indias strongman, the Prime Minister has weakened his Resolve Offering to suspend the farmers for 18 months. But he is still refusing to scrap them. What would you say to the farmers i have met in these protests who say these laws will destroy them . Mil these laws will destroy them . All these laws will destroy them . Fill these three new laws do is give the farmers the freedom. They dont take away anything. It gives them freedom to sell when, where, to a contract, not to a contract. Itjust gives freedom. Not to a contract. It ust gives freedomfi not to a contract. It ust gives freedom. ~ ,. ,. ,. , freedom. Why does the Agricultural Sector needs freedom. Why does the Agricultural Sector needs to freedom. Why does the Agricultural Sector needs to modernise . Sector needs to modernise . Agriculture is the only sector which has not been subject to reform. 70 years. Agriculture has had an average productivity of 50 below average. We havejust been average productivity of 50 below average. We have just been stuck there. Some Bureaucrat Sitting in there. Some Bureaucrat Sitting in the State Government or the Central Government had to decide what is good for agriculture and what agriculture can and cannot do
