England trial to boost Cervical Cancer screening numbers. Would you prefer to do your own smear test at home . What puts you off going for one at the dcotors . For one at the doctors . Let me know this morning. Alex salmond will not appear today at the Scottish Parliament inquiry into how complaints against him were handled. It comes after the Prosecution Service raised concerns about publication of his written evidence. And coming up this hour, ill talk to the archbishop of canterbury on how he reflects on the last year has it changed his outlook on the rest of his life . That is just after half past nine. Good morning. Secondary schools in england will be asked to consider delivering face to face Summer Schools as part of efforts to help pupils catch up with lessons lost as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. An extra £420 million in funding has been announced on top of the £300 million outlined in january. The package also includes funding for a National Tutoring programme for primary and secondary pupils. The average Primary School will receive an additional payment of about £6,000. The typical Secondary School will get approximately £22,000. Borisjohnson said the money would help to ensure no child is left behind due to covid. But teachers have questioned whether the money goes far enough. 0ur Education Correspondent Danjohnson has more details. When children get back into class, teachers have the delicate task of working out whos missed what and where extra support is needed. Many are wary of the Pressure Pupils will be under and the risk that some could be discouraged by talk of catching up, lost learning and being left behind. But there is widespread recognition that Home Schooling could never fully replace classroom teaching, so now, theres more money to help everyone get back on track and make sure every child can reach their potential. The Department For Education has announced another £400 million across england, meaning £1. 7 billion has been allocated since the start of the pandemic. Theres £200 million for Secondary Schools to deliver face to face Summer School activities, potentially focused on children moving up from Primary School this year, and £18 million will support Language Development for the youngest children. Schools have flexibility in how they spend some of the rest. The majority of it will go on one to one and small group tuition, targeted at the children who need it most. Some Teaching Unions say much more is required, and its teachers who know best what their pupils need. Exactly how this help is delivered and whether it reaches the right children will be the key to determining the Lasting Impact on the lives of those whove come through the most Difficult School year. Dan johnson, bbc news. 0ur chief Political Correspondent adam fleming is at westminster. £1. 7 billion in total, do people think that is another . £1. 7 billion in total, do people think that is another . Labour say if ou think that is another . Labour say if you compare think that is another . Labour say if you compare this think that is another . Labour say if you compare this to think that is another . Labour say if you compare this to eat think that is another . Labour say if you compare this to eat out think that is another . Labour say if you compare this to eat out to think that is another . Labour say if| you compare this to eat out to help 0ut, you compare this to eat out to help out, the chancellor was more generous to people in restaurants than the Education Secretary is being too children who need to catch up being too children who need to catch up in school but im sure the governor to a debate that and they point out this is just the start of a pretty long term thing and they will be tackling this problem for quite some time, which probably means more money further down the line. If you disentangle what all the money is being spent on, it is quite useful. A big chunk of this is stuff the government was already pursuing, the extra tuition, either one to one or in groups. A new chunk is something called the recovery premium, given to primary and Secondary Schools in england and teachers can spend it on what they want as long as it is targeted at the most disadvantaged pupils and the most disadvantaged pupils and the ones who have fallen the furthest behind. There is a separate chunk which is aimed at this provision of stuff during the Summer Holidays and gavin williamson, the Education Secretary, spelt out what some of that could be. It is there to be able to support them in terms of academic catch up but also some of the softer sides and the enrichment activities that we know all children have missed out on as well. But it is part of a long term plan. It is part of a Long Term Strategy to help children, help schools to be able to recover, and be able to really bounce back incredibly quickly. But the most important part of that is seeing children coming back on the 8th of march. So what the government is doing is giving schools in england extra money and flexibility to do what they want over the next few months. What they are not doing, the government, is making a Blanket Policy of all schools either having to have a longer school days to catch up or longer terms and shorter holidays to catch up, which some people had been calling for. The Education Secretary made the point that the big thing that is about to happen is all schools are going back on the 8th of march. However, Secondary Schools will have to offer their pupils three tests over the first two weeks that they are back and so i think a lot of schools will have to stagger the return of pupils to get them safely through the sports full or whatever they are doing for the testing so it might be a bit more complicated, returning, thanjust a bit more complicated, returning, than just saying, everyone a bit more complicated, returning, thanjust saying, everyone back a bit more complicated, returning, than just saying, everyone back to the classroom on the 8th of march. Thanks, adam. 0ur Correspondent Dan Johnsonjoins Me now. Does this raise the prospect of teachers doing Summer School through the Summer Holidays . Yes. The Summer Holidays . Yes, potentially. The Summer Holidays . Yes, potentially, and the Summer Holidays . Yes, potentially, and that the Summer Holidays . Yes, potentially, and that is the Summer Holidays . Yes, potentially, and that is one | the Summer Holidays . 1913 potentially, and that is one concern that has been raised by Teaching Unions, that teachers have already been through the most relentlessly year, and they are already tired and they could do with a rest and they potentially have to at least build up potentially have to at least build up and prepare for Summer School provision, even if they dont have to deliver it themselves in the Summer Holiday. There was talk potentially of shortening the Summer Holiday, so the school year would be longer and children would spend longer and children would spend longer in conventional classrooms or another alternative was potentially lengthening the school day for the forthcoming term. Those options seem to have been set aside in favour of providing Summer School activities. It is not specifically detailed that that has to be done by teachers. It could be other volunteers or tutors or staff who are brought in to supervise the activities. But certainly, you would expect the Teachers Want to at least be part of assessing what each pupil has missed, how much help they need, and what the best kind of programme, activities and learning for them to be put in place is so they can catch up be put in place is so they can catch up as best as possible. There is a bit of a split in the teaching profession. Some welcome the money, the investment, this announcement and the big programmes. 0thers the investment, this announcement and the big programmes. Others are saying this is not the right approach, that we should do this quietly, carefully and delicately with each child. We know them best, let us get a sense of what they have missed out on, what they have not been able to connect with through Remote Learning and then give us the time and space to work with those children, to bring them back up to the right level. The last thing Teachers Want to do is to Dis Incentivise pupils, to add pressure on to them, to make them feel like they have been left behind and they are struggling and potentially will never catch up because they are going to be under pressure. But no one can deny Remote Learning and Home Schooling was never a proper, full replacement for the classroom teaching, however good it may have beenin teaching, however good it may have been in places. So there is a lot to do to help pupils catch up and even the Education Secretary recognises this is only the start of tackling what is going to be a long term challenge that will need attention over many years. Challenge that will need attention over many yew over many years. Thanks, dan. Someone over many years. Thanks, dan. Someone on over many years. Thanks, dan. Someone on the over many years. My youngest daughter is going into her gcses next year, so its a critical year, and my stepdaughter is in year nine. They are all at really critical stages in their education but they are also at critical stages in their kind of personal development. My daughter who lost her gcses had already lost that summer with her prom and having all the fun that they had planned. By all the fun that they had planned. By august 2022, she will be an adult, she will turn 18 and if this summer also disappears for her, i really fear for summer also disappears for her, i really fearfor her. What does that mean in terms of our Family Planning for the summer ahead . There are all of those questions as well as, you know, the teachers, who, as your previous reporter said, teachers, who, as your previous reportersaid, have teachers, who, as your previous reporter said, have already had a relentless year. And referring earlier to teachers knowing our children probably better than we do in terms of their educational needs, absolutely. I absolutely think they need to catch up but i dont know whether that is taking away from our family time or their social and personal development. The 45 year old golf champion was freed from the wreckage by the emergency services. Police say he was lucky to survive. No other cars were involved. The Los Angeles County sheriff Alex Villanueva told a News Conference that woods did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Sophie long has this report from los angeles. Has anyone checked the vehicle to see if anyones there . No. The Emergency Call came just after seven on tuesday morning. The golf legends suv had been travelling at speed before it flipped and rolled multiple times, sustaining extensive damage. More than 31,000 women in north london are being offered do it at home smear tests as part of an nhs trial which aims to cut down the number Cervical Cancer cases. Of Cervical Cancer cases. The kits will be given to women who are 15 months overdue a check up. Experts hope that it could encourage more women to get screened, as many put off going to see their gp due to embarrassment, cultural barriers and worries about the test. 0ur Health Correspondent Sophie Hutchinson reports. Cervical cancer affects just over 3,000 women a year in the uk. Smear tests save lives by spotting the early signs and detecting the human papilloma virus, the biggest cause of the disease. But, many women dont get tested. Grace says she missed her smear because she was just too busy, and only went after a friend begged her to go. She was shocked to discover she had severe abnormal cell changes. It was quite scary, especially because i didnt know that much about it. But im just so thankful that i went when i did. It could have been different, if id left it even six months. To help women get tested, the nhs in england is now trialling Home Smear Kits. They will be offered to more than 31,000 women aged 25 64, who are 15 months overdue for a check. It can be quite an invasive procedure for many women so the idea is women procedure for many women so the idea is women can procedure for many women so the idea is women can check themselves in the comfort is women can check themselves in the comfort of is women can check themselves in the comfort of their own home at a time which comfort of their own home at a time which is comfort of their own home at a time which is convenient for them. There are instructions on what to do, there are instructions on what to do, there are are instructions on what to do, there are two options with tickets. You can there are two options with tickets. You can either do the sample at the gp practice you can either do the sample at the gp practice and hand it back in and we send gp practice and hand it back in and we send it gp practice and hand it back in and we send it to the lab, or we can send we send it to the lab, or we can send you we send it to the lab, or we can send you the kit in the post and you can do send you the kit in the post and you can do the send you the kit in the post and you can do the sample at home and put it in the can do the sample at home and put it in the prepaid envelope into any posthox in the prepaid envelope into any postbox and it will go back to the lab. The trial is taking place in north london, which has one of the lowest uptakes of Cervical Screening. But the pandemic has significantly worsened the situation across the country, with 600,000 smear tests failing to go ahead in april and may last year, an increase of more than a third on the annual backlog. Know there has been uncertainty and confusion about women about whether they can or should attend screening right now. Theres been a huge disruption. It is concerning because Cervical Screening is the best protection against developing Cervical Cancers. But a study such as this one is fantastic, as well, because it is offering, even though it isjust in london, it is offering those people who are overdue a different, easier, potentially, way to access screening right now. Campaigners say the Home Smear Kits should be rolled out across the country as quickly as possible if the trial is found to be safe, so that all women at risk of Cervical Cancer can be protected. Sophie hutchinson, bbc news. Kate sanger is from the charity jos Cervical Cancer trust. Hello. Can i read you a couple of messages from women responding to this . One says, i dont know how i feel about this, if it is not done correctly, it is no different to not getting tested. I personally would not use it. Nobody likes the screening, i got myself totally worked up about mine and in a wobbly, anxious mess but it is still preferable to cancer. What do you say to that . Say to that . Well, firstly, i would say to that . Well, firstly, i would sa that say to that . Well, firstly, i would say that we say to that . Well, firstly, i would say that we know say to that . Well, firstly, i would say that we know that say that we know that Cervical Cancer can be difficult for a lot of reasons and it is very normal to feel worried or scared or anxious about going for smear tests. But we want more information that can help to make the test better. Regarding the test and the accuracy of Self Sampling, we know this is a concern among lots of people that they dont think they will be able to do the test correctly and that is one of the things the sample is checking, checking whether women do want to do Self Sampling, if they like having the opportunity and if they take it up and how we encourage people to take the other up and i think the other thing to say is that a Self Sample Test is a very different test to one that you would have at the gp. It is a simple swab, which you do yourself. It does not involve a speculum or touching the cervix. It is an easy test to do and again, that is one of the important messages to get out there to people who are doing the test, about the ease and simplicity of Self Sampling. Ease and simplicity of Self Sampling ease and simplicity of self samtlin. , sampling. And why will it be as effective as sampling. And why will it be as effective as a sampling. And why will it be as effective as a nurse sampling. And why will it be as effective as a nurse doing sampling. And why will it be as effective as a nurse doing it. Sampling. A self test is looking for hpv, and it test is looking for hpv, and it connects a sample of cells which are sent to the laboratory to see if hpv, the virus that causes almost all Cervical Cancers, is present. The Research Shows that doing an Hpv Self Test is accurate and effective and again, this is why it is really important that if it is rolled out across the uk, that we are doing it in the safest and most effective way which is why studies like this are so important, to make sure we are doing it in the right way and in a way that will have a really big impact on Cervical Screening attendance and also diagnosis of Cervical Cancer. Ldistill attendance and also diagnosis of Cervical Cancer. Cervical cancer. Will it have an im act Cervical Cancer. Will it have an impact on Cervical Cancer. Will it have an impact on diagnosis Cervical Cancer. Will it have an impact on diagnosis of Cervical Cancer. Will it have an| impact on diagnosis of Cervical Cancer . Another says, this is fine for me, i cant guarantee i will do it properly and cancer signs could be missed. Another viewer says, this is a good idea for those reluctant to be tested but i hope it isnt a replacement for having it done by Health Care Professional and they do more than just the smear, they do more than just the smear, they check for other issues and give invaluable advice. 50 they check for other issues and give invaluable advice. Invaluable advice. So the study is testin invaluable advice. So the study is testing two invaluable advice. So the study is testing two different invaluable advice. So the study is testing two different pathways, i invaluable advice. So the study is i testing two different pathways, some women will receive a test through the door, women who are overdue will receive a self test to take and others will be offered it at the gp as an opportunistic offer. It is looking at the two different offers and again, it is all about making sure the test is What Women Want and well take up. Theres no point in introducing something which is not what is wanted. Hopefully the test will find out the best way to offer women a test. It is true that Cervical Screening appointments are a Good Opportunity to talk to women about other health issues, too. Again, we need to find out ways to ensure that women get all of those messages and the literature and the messaging around Cervical Screening is right and is accurate and is providing the messages women want. But i would say any concerns about accuracy of the test, it is a very different as to doing a traditional Screening Test that you would be used to at the gp. I was just going to say also, if hpv is not present, hpv is the cause of almost every Cervical Cancer and if it is not present, then your risk of Cervical Cancer is extremely, extremely low. That is why testing for hpv is a great way of identifying those who might be at a greater risk of Cervical Cancer and might need to seek treatment or greater monitoring. Seek treatment or greater monitoring. Seek treatment or greater monitorint. ,. Monitoring. Essentially, you have a swab, ou monitoring. Essentially, you have a swab. You insert monitoring. Yes, you will need to go to the gp for a test in that case i to the gp for a test in that case and again, this is all part of, one of the benefits of this test means that if hpv is not present, thats it, you have been screened and you dont need to attend again for another three or five years, there is no need to go to the gp. But if there is hpv present, then yes, there is hpv present, then yes, there is hpv present, then yes, there is a need to go to the gp and you will have a further test and they will decide if you need to go for further Hospital Investigation where they will look at the cell changes that have been picked up. But for a lot of women, it will be the only test they need to take as and when this does get rolled out further across the uk, which is something we really hope to see. And something we really hope to see. And how oor something we really hope to see. Theres a warning that the pandemic has led to more children being referred to Social Services in england, because of poverty, parental ill health and Domestic Violence. A report by the association of directors of Childrens Services says some families, who had been managing before covid, are now in need of significant help. Heathrow airport has announced a £2 billion loss after Passenger Numbers collapsed to levels last seen in the 1970s because of the pandemic. Its called on the government to agree a Common International standard to allow travel to restart in the summer and it wants tax breaks for airports to help them ride out the crisis. Joining me now to discuss those results isjohn holland kaye, the ceo of heathrow airport. Good morning. First of all, presumably, these losses are not a huge surprise to you . Huge surprise to you . Know, all of our income huge surprise to you . Know, all of our income comes huge surprise to you . Know, all of our income comes from huge surprise to you . Know, all of. Our income comes from passengers, and if no one is flying, we have no income. But of course, we have very high fixed costs. We have got this massive, five square miles asset that we need to maintain and keep secure. Even though we have made the most of the low, we still have a lot of people that we need in the airport to keep it safe and secure and i really want to thank them for the amazing job they have done in keeping the uks biggest port open, helping to bring in all of the equipment needed for the nhs and also supporting the uk supply chain at a really difficult time for them personally as well as professionally. They have done a really amazing job and im very proud of them. Really amazing ob and im very proud of them. Really amazing ob and im very proud of them. Really amazing ob and im very roud of them. , ,. , i. Proud of them. How confident are you that eo le proud of them. How confident are you that people will proud of them. How confident are you that people will be proud of them. How confident are you that people will be going proud of them. How confident are you that people will be going on that people will be going on holidays abroad this summer . Im holidays abroad this summer . Im ve holidays abroad this summer . In very confident we will have a Summer Holiday this year. It is probably the thing most of us have been looking forward to through lockdown. What we are pleased with, with the prime and as as speech on monday, hes given us a date we can work too, the 17th of may at the earliest which gives us three months to plan to make sure that the airports are ready, the airlines are ready to go and that people can start to book their flights as well. May is normally a fairly quiet time for most airports, it is thejuly peak as schools break up that is really the focal point and i think there is a very good chance that people will be able to get away for the Summer Holidays. Heathrow, of course, is notjust holidays. Heathrow, of course, is not just about british holidays. Heathrow, of course, is notjust about british people going on holiday, it is also about bringing International Tourists into the uk and exports and getting goods around the world. We have a very different kind of business because we are the uks biggest port and also, the main gateway for Long Haul Travel into the uk. fine also, the main gateway for Long Haul Travel into the uk. Travel into the uk. One of the challenges travel into the uk. One of the challenges will travel into the uk. One of the challenges will be travel into the uk. One of the challenges will be People Travel Into the uk. One of the i challenges will be people having travel into the uk. One of the challenges will be people having to queue to either show that they have got a vaccine certificate, that they have had theirjab, or proof of a negative test. Is paper documentation sustainable Going Forward . We saw the big queues at terminal five forward . We saw the Big Queues At Terminalfive the forward . We saw the big queues at terminal five the other week where people were not able to socially distance. Is that sustainable . You are absolutely distance. Is that sustainable . Gm. Are absolutely right, this is one of the things that the prime and as thes Global Travel taskforce needs to sort out. Prime ministers Global Travel titles. To sort out. Prime ministers globaltravel titles. I to sort out. Prime ministers Global Travel titles. I imagine last time you flew, you checked in at a kiosk and went through all of the cheques very quickly. And all of the cheques very quickly. And all of the cheques were happening behind the scenes on a computer. Now, with the new checks that are coming in to confirm where you are going to be staying, whether you have booked tests in advance, had a negative covid test before you fly, all of those are done on paper. That all needs to be automated so that we can start to get people travelling at scale in a very seamless way. We have been working on this for a long time. We have been working with Companies Like travel pass to make sure that we are planning ahead but we need the government to get involved. I think this is where the uk has a real opportunity to take a lead. International travel only works because we have common standards between countries and yet, with all of these new tests and vaccine cheques, there are no common standards between countries. With the uk as one of the first Major Economies coming out of the crisis, we can start to establish what those standards are and we can use our presidency of the g7 at the moment to help to bring other Major Economies on board. That will get International Travel moving which is hugely important for the uk because we are a tiny trading nation. We are more dependent on International Trade and travel than almost any other major economy in the world. Yes, i think it will be and will have the documentation on . Use i think it will be and that will keep the information secure. It will do all of the cheques behind the scenes without us having to produce pieces of paper and a app is always more secure than having lots of pieces of paper floating around that you have to show to a physical person. I think it will be much quicker and easier for physical person. I think it will be much quicker and easierfor people to use and it will take into account the different requirements of Different Countries that people might need for visiting. 0ne Different Countries that people might need for visiting. One of the important things is that we have open standard so multiple apps can be used by Different Countries but they also have the same purpose of making sure that only the people who have the right validation to fly and the right certificate or whatever can go. But over time, i the right certificate or whatever can go. But overtime, i hope the right certificate or whatever can go. But over time, i hope that we will get back to travel where you dont need to have cheques and certificates for covid, as the disease comes under control around the world, we should have more Travel Corridors with low risk countries and an increasing number of low risk countries so we can get more back to the way things used to be and we can just travel as normal. Thank you forjoining us. The ceo of heathrow airport. Now its time for a look at the weather with carole. Hello again. It has been a very mild start to the day for the time of year and through today, we might see temperatures getting up as high as 17 or 18 in any prolonged spells of sunshine, but we still have some rain across southern scotland, Northern England and wales and either side of that, there will be some hazy sunshine. Just a few showers and blustery winds, not quite as strong as yesterday, but the Gustiest Winds will be out towards the west. Those are our temperatures, nine to 16, possibly 17 somewhere in the east. Tonight, ourWeather Front producing the rain moves eastwards, taking all its cloud with it, the rain fermenting. Behind it, some clearer skies but a lot of showers coming in on the strong wind across the west. And into tomorrow, well start off with all this cloud and some light rain and drizzle moving across central Southern England into the south east through the day. Behind it, some sunshine but still a plethora of showers. Not as windy and the temperatures are not as high as they are going to be today. We are looking at a range of eight in the north to 12 in the south. Hello, this is bbc news. There was that nice respite in the summer and a beautiful summer, but by this time, like almost everyone in the country, i am longing to see people in 3d rather than 2d. To be with people. One of the strange things in myjob is that most anglicans round the world live overseas, an hundred and 65 countries, normally i spend a lot of time travelling and most in really tough places with war and conflict and all kinds of things. So one of these strange things for me has been for a whole year, for the first time in many years, rather than being with those people. I have missed that hugely. I want to ask you about grief, i know you have experienced grief and loss when your baby daughter was killed in a car crash in the 1980s, for those who could not hold their relative was not hand in hospital because they were not allowed in as their loved one was dying, what words of comfort could you say to them . I think so many people have been on a year of lent, and the biggest thing that they have missed out on as you say, it is possibly one in ten of our population have not been able to be with someone who is dying ought to be at their funeral. But at the end of this period, we remember as christians there is suffering, there is the crucifixion ofjesus and there is hope. Death is the great liar, when someone dies in hospital, death says you missed out, there is no hope and no future, that is the biggest lie. We can come together at the end of this lockdown and do the things we wanted to do, we cannot be with them when they were dying, but the hospital staff will have loved them and cared for them, we can come together and remember them and cry and laugh and tell the stories we wanted to tell and celebrate their lives and mourn their loss and that will really help people when they dontjust put it behind them because you never can, but they take part in what they would have taken what do you say to those who might say if there was a god, he would not have allowed the world to be consumed by the pandemic . That is one of the biggest consumed by the pandemic . That is one of the biggest questions. Consumed by the pandemic . That is one of the biggest questions. There| one of the biggest questions. There is a god. What i see is as christians we understand that god came and suffered with us and died on a cross for us, he suffered everything we do in a time of poverty and war, he defeated death and rose from the dead. That is at the heart of this story Ofjesus Christ who historically wandered around in palestine 2000 years ago. For us, that means that god is at our site in suffering. He does not sort everything out but gives us choices to how we live, space to be ourselves but is at our site when we call on him and is with us and loves us and every human being can know that love of god. I have been through those moments of asking myself why this is happening. I have done it, in our own family, as you mention, and many places standing next to a mass grave in south sudan, going through a town with unburied bodies everywhere around us from war and conflict. Covid 19 is going to be with us like influenza. We have the solution and that solution is in our own hands. Get it when you are offered it, take it, and this will be a minor thing of no great concern to us. We have this land which we have had for over 1000 years. It is land that has potential Planning Permission and the Housing Commission challenges us to be the developers and build beautiful safe secure wonderful homes that are affordable for people. Are we going to do it . I am not the Chief Executive of the Church Of England plc, i cannot give an order, but i appeal to every part of the church to take part and commit what they have got and to lead the way. I think we can get this going so that people look back and say that was a change in the Housing Crisis and part of rebuilding this country post covid 19. The government announced billions to remove dangerous cladding but leaseholders living in shorter buildings will be left out and will have to take on loans. Does that seem right . They need to commit everything necessary to get this done and recover the money from others, from developers and builders and designers and people who were involved in this. It is right to recover the money but they can solve the problem quickly and the one set of people who cannot carry the weight are the mass vast majority of People Living in the houses who are suffering from the crisis. Two sisters say theyve been silenced by the man they reported for Sexual Assault after he sued them for talking about what happened. Twins verity and lucy named the man in allegations on social media after police dropped their cases. He denies the accusations and sought a court order to hide his identity. Verity, lucy and the man agreed to a settlement that lets the sisters share their experience as long as he isnt identified. Megan fisher has been speaking to the sisters. Hed already taken so much from us when he had assaulted us, that violation, the ultimate betrayal. For him to then come back and sue us, it wasjust. It was mind blowing. That is twin sisters verity and lucy. They were sued by the man they reported for Sexual Assault. When i woke up, i remembered him raping me. He sexually assaulted me and my way of dealing with that was to leave, but i never ever thought he would do that to lucy. If i had ever have thought that, i wouldnt have left and maybe it wouldnt have happened. Verity and lucys cases were dropped by the police. They then posted their allegations on social media, naming their alleged abuser. We werejust Searching Forjustice and came out like, trying any which way to get out. It was kind of like, what are our options at this point . It felt wrong to put alleged on something you know happened, you relive it every night when you have ptsd nightmares, when you get triggered by a smell like aftershave. Like, you know that happened. But he denies their account. And sued them for making the allegations public. 0ur reaction at that point was, so much has happened to us, we just laughed. Because it was just like, what else do you do . They wanted us to say wed never talk about it again in any way, that we wouldnt name him. So you did something awful you hurt me and you want me to go sit and in a corner and be quiet. Verity and lucys Social Media Posts landed them in court. So it Wasjust Panic in terms of are we going to find a lawyer on time . 0nly moved out from home a couple of years before. Like, ijust. Just learning how to do basic things Like Council Tax and and you being like, oh, yeah, ijust filed this. It cost me £200. And i wasjust like, what . Oh, no, now we cant eat for the next week or so. Like, when we got the date for the first hearing and having to go there not knowing if he was going to show up, i was so worried, like, i thought that you were going to have a panic attack or something. What verity and lucy have always wanted is power over if and how they share their experience. They reached a settlement with their alleged abuser that lets them do that so long as he is not identified. Ok, you have the human rights, freedom of speech, but there is like an asterisk next to it, you can see this. When it first happened, i felt a bit of a loss. It was that last hope of getting a day in court sort of, like, died. One way of us being able to sit with that decision and deal with it was that we were campaigning for a law that when each victim speaks out, that they should be counted as a Whistle Blower and offered protections and they shouldnt suffer legal action. It was more about that this was something to that happens to survivors. We have to fight this. Joining me to discuss some of the issues raised in that report is harriet wistrich, director of the centre for womensjustice. How common are how common are cases how common are cases like this . We have how common are cases like this . Have come across quite a number of cases. Some have gone to court and many others dont go to court because the threat of a libel action tends to silence many who fear being caught in litigation which will go on and on for sometimes and put them at huge risk of incurring costs. It is a bigger issue than the number of court cases but there have been a series of court cases and they are very disturbing that somebody who has come forward to report being a victim of Sexual Assault or Domestic Violence and then for whatever reason, that case has not proceeded. We know the vast majority of reported Sexual Assaults do not proceed to court because of the difficulty in proving allegations to the criminal standard, but it does not mean that those allegations are made up. If someone in good faith reports it or seeks to highlight the issue amongst others and is then facing Court Proceedings where they have to defend the truth of what they said, that is a huge issue for them and it is something we have been raising awareness around and also advising Rape Crisis Organisations and others so that they may have a sense of what can safely be spoken about would you accept a huge issue for a man who has not been charged of rape by the police, in the eyes of the lot he is innocent and if he is named on social media as a rapist he can sue for defamation. That is how the law works. Can sue for defamation. That is how the law works can sue for defamation. That is how the law works. That is how it works. You have a the law works. That is how it works. You have a situation the law works. That is how it works. You have a situation where the law works. That is how it works. You have a situation where there i the law works. That is how it works. | you have a situation where there are certain wealthy and powerful men, Harvey Weinstein was able to silence so many women that were victimised by over many years with the mere threat of bringing proceedings. And what that essentially means that those wealthy and powerful men and others can continue to get away with it until there is an army of women coming forward through the need to movement that broke the silence eventually. And has brought him to justice. 0bviously eventually. And has brought him to justice. Obviously there are issues, at the moment, we will advise those who wish to speak out not to name the person. Even if you do not name the person. Even if you do not name the person, i have worked with a family of someone else who did not name the man who raped her, but spoke out about it, and because it was argued that she was. That he was argued that she was. That he was identified by her speaking out he might be identified, he was able to sue her. We need to look at the way in which Defamation Law is used to silence those who wish to basically speak out. We worked so hard to encourage victims to be able to not suffer in silence, but to share their experiences and speak out and it is a very Chilling Effect. Do you think the Chilling Effect extends to putting of other victims coming forward . Coming forward . Yes, it certainly does, coming forward . Yes, it certainly does. Well coming forward . Yes, it certainly does, well what coming forward . Yes, it certainly does, well what it coming forward . Yes, it certainly does, well what it stops coming forward . Yes, it certainly does, well what it stops victims l does, well what it stops victims from doing is sharing their experiences with anyone else. Another case is where somebody reported a man that worked in the same workplace as her to the police. Eventually a decision was made not to prosecute. The employer became aware of the allegation and suspended the man, and Countersued Herfor suspended the man, and countersued her for libel so suspended the man, and Countersued Herfor libel so even. He suspended the man, and countersued her for libel so even. He stopped the effectiveness of disciplinary action and she had to leave the job in the end. We have to find a way in which these things can be spoken about and issues raised. Thank you very much. The director of the centre for womens justice. If you have been affected by these issues, help and support is available. 0ryou issues, help and support is available. Or you can call at any time to hear recorded information. Let me read this number again. 088077077 ten orangutans have been returned to the wild in indonesia, in a lengthy release operation that was complicated by the coronavirus pandemic. The eight adults and two baby apes were taken by helicopter, truck and canoe to a remote spot on the indonesian side of borneo. The endangered animals were in captivity when they were rescued. Tiffaney sweeney reports. Ten orangutans have been safely elected to their natural habitat in indonesia. There were five males and two babies and two females, all released with assistance from indonesian conservation agencies. They were transported by helicopter to invite journey on land exposing them to coronavirus. The orangutans had been in captivity before their rescue. This was their First Release into the wild for a year. They include this 19 year old female who had been repatriated from thailand. Translation during rehabilitation, she showed excellent progress. She was easy to socialise with other orangutans and explored the whole island on her own. It is estimated there are 100,000 left in the wild. They have suffered from illegal poaching, Destruction Of Habitat and cash crops such as palm oil. This has meant half the population has been depleted over the last 60 years. These are the lucky ones and are settling into their new home and starting their new life in the wild. Now its time for a look at the weather. Hello again. Some northern and western parts of the uk have seen some heavy rain in the last 24 hours or so board and blustery especially across cumbria and there is more rain in the forecast today. Its also going to be mild across the board, and blustery winds, not quite as windy as yesterday. So here youve got the rain across southern scotland, Northern England and wales. 0n either side of that for the rest of scotland and Northern Ireland some brighter skies but also some showers and to the south of that band of rain we are looking at some sunshine which will be hazy at times. Now, these are the average wind speeds. The strongest gust of winds will be out towards the west, especially with exposure. Temperatures today generally nine to about 15 or 16, but in any prolonged spells of sunshine in eastern areas, we could hit 17, possibly 18, meeting at the warmest day for this year so far. Now, as we head on through the evening and overnight, a Weather Front bearing this cloud and rain will push steadily eastwards. The rain in it weakening as we go through the night but still a plethora of showers coming in on a brisk wind across the north west. Temperatures falling between six and 10 degrees. Tomorrow, we start off with our Weather Front across central and south eastern areas, Still Producing a fair bit of cloud, some drizzle and some light rain. This Weather Front across the north west is going to produce some showers which at times could merge to give some longer spells of rain. In between both of these areas, we are looking at some dry conditions, we could see the odd shower as far south as north wales, but most of us will miss them and they will be a fair bit of sunshine. The wind changing tomorrow for westerly, so the temperatures wont be as high tomorrow, but, still, we are looking at 8 to 12 degrees, so stilljust a bit above average for late february. Then, as we head into friday, it will be a cold start. Some of us will have some frost, some patchy mist and fog, that will lift. There will be a lot of dry weather, a fair bit of sunshine, but you can see areas of cloud which could be thick enough for the odd shower. Temperature wise, eight in lerwick to 13 in london so we still are on the mild side, temperatures are still above average. As we head into the weekend, High Pressure really establishes itself across the uk. Weather front toppling over the top of it could well bring some cloud and some rain across Northern Ireland and also northern scotland at times, but generally, for the weekend we are looking at dry conditions, lighter winds, chilly nights and some patchy fog. This is bbc news. These are the latest headlines in the uk and around the world.
