The moment perseverance lands on mars. The Intrepid Rover has now sent back the first sound from the planet well play you it all. And, bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase moving house. Well talk to the architect behind the mission to literally pick and move a 139 year old home. Hello im katty kay in washington. Christian fraser is in london. In the last few hours, the british Prime Minister has been setting out a road map he hopes will bring england out of Lockdown Starting March 8th with the return of schools. But the easing of restrictions will be gradual, and it will be many months well into the summer before life returns to anything approaching normal. With the return to the classroom on the 8th, School Sports and activities will also restart. One to one recreation in public spaces such as parks will also be permitted. Four weeks later, the 29th of march, up to six people will be allowed to meet outdoors and some sports will resume. And, in the best Case Scenario, from april 12th shops, gyms and hairdressers can reopen for the First Time Since january 6th. What we will look like by then goodness only knows. Speakfor speak for yourself from may 17th, cafes, pubs and restaurants will be able to reopen their Indoor Dining areas. The government says the final restrictions will be eased no earlier thanjune the 21st 15 months after the first restrictions were implemented in March Of Last year. Borisjohnson says there is no such thing as a covid free future, but relief is in sight. Our extraordinary nhs has now succeeded in vaccinating more than 17. 7 Million People across the uk, and nearly a year after this pandemic began this unparalleled National Effort has decisively shifted the odds in our favour. So that we no longer have to rely simply on lockdowns and restricting our behaviour and putting our lives on hold, but with every day that goes by, this programme of vaccination is creating a shield around the entire population. At each stage, there will be a pause of five weeks before the next restrictions can be lifted. And the data must pass these four tests to proceed to the next stage. The vaccine roll out must be on track, Death Numbers must be falling, the National Health service must be coping, and Mutant Variants must be under control. Lets speak now to calum semple professor of child health and outbreak medicine. Hes also a member of the governments Scientific Advisory body, sage. He joins us from liverpool. Welcome to the programme. When you were involved in your meetings to discuss white unlocked why was it thought necessary to have five weeks between each chapter . To discuss white unlocked. Why to unlock. I am speaking to you on a personal capacity and will really speaks to the science here. There is always a lag before cases are seen in the community and then rises in case numbers and unfortunately some people die and others get so sick that they need Intensive Care see need to build in these delay periods in order to assess the impact of any change. I think most people are now realising that clove is real. New variants continue to cause challenges and may cause challenges in the future but the basic biology has not changed. To smack most people are now realising that covid 19 is real. Is it that covid19 is real. Is it possible that covid19 is real. Is it possible that that covid19 is real. Is it possible that the that covid19 is real. Is it possible that the vaccine | that covid 19 is real. Is it possible that the vaccine roll out and the vaccine roll out itself proves even more effective than it looks today and therefore some of these states could be brought forward . Some of the restrictions could be lifted earlier, in fact . The really good news today is that the vaccine is shown to be much more effective in some groups then there was concern about, particularly the over 80s. Was concern about, particularly the over80s. It was concern about, particularly the over 80s. It is showing effectiveness in the high 85, mid 90 from studies in scotland but that doesnt mean that there will be an acceleration of the mocking because you still need that for five week period to understand the impact of a change in behaviour. An acceleration of the unlocking, four five week period period. Once you get towards the end of may really at that point we are getting very close to a minimal lockdown situation and at that point we have to be quite careful on whether we are starting to see a rise in case numbers and so there is a real race to get people vaccinated by the 17th of may. I am personally delighted that schoolchildren are going back and they are going to go back with enhanced Infection Prevention and control measures and lateral flow testing but if we do see steep rises in cases in the early summer then there is wiggle room in this plan to delay different stages of the unlocking road map. Delay different stages of the unlocking road map. When the scientists appear unlocking road map. When the scientists appear before unlocking road map. When the scientists appear before the i unlocking road map. When the scientists appear before the science and Technology Committee last week they were asked whether they had come to a decision about what is acceptable in terms of the level of infection and death going forward. Do you think that sort of debate has been hard within government . Is that the figure in mind . Because it seems to me, as borisjohnson has said today, we are not going to be coded free but they must have to be an acceptable level of infection and death somewhere . We are not going to be coded three. Covid free. It is inevitable that as we are not there will be a slight rise in cases and perhaps with bad luck there might be a steep rise in cases in the mid summer. I expect their conversation has happened was i was not privy to it. It is a was going to be a balance of welfare, economy, and health. Wejust dont to be a balance of welfare, economy, and health. We just dont know. To be a balance of welfare, economy, and health. Wejust dont know. We have now got an effective vaccination. We also know it is effective in the elderly population. It also appears to be quite effective at reducing transmission so if we can get enough people, particularly those under the age of 50 to engage in vaccination there will be a much better picture in the summer. ~ will be a much better picture in the summer. , ~ ,. , will be a much better picture in the summer. ~ ,. , y will be a much better picture in the summer. , ~ ,. ,. That is interesting because i have heard today from someone who been pulling people because actually the Prime Minister has been criticising some quarters for being able cautious but it shows it is pretty much in line with public thinking we were talking earlier and you are saying some people in the United States very bullish about the second half of 2021, spring of 2022 in terms of the economy, and that surely depends on whether Confidence Returns and at the moment people are very nervous about unlocking too quickly. Yeah, yeah. Iwill quickly. Yeah, yeah. I will not be on that nightclub at the end of year to june. Knox, of course, Thati Nightclub at the end of year to june. Knox, of course, that i would have been if it wasnt a covid but this time around i wont be. So, this time on thursday we were all marvelling at nasas latest, incredible, achievement of landing a new rover on mars. The biggest payload they have ever sent, with the most sophisticated equipment on board, and i am sure many of you have been searching for news updates all weekend. Well, in the last hour we have been shown new video that was recorded by perseverence as it landed with the very first sounds from the martian surface. So this is the view above the rover as it comes into land. Remember it was travelling at 12000 miles an hour, as it arrived in the atmosphere, but there you see the parachute deploying, to slow the descent and the rover dangling from these nylon ropes which will gently lower it to the surface. From the downfard facing camera you see the martian surface as it comes into view, you will see a silver disk, that is the Heat Shield Separating from the lander. And as this descent continues, into view, comes the first High Definition footage of the martian surface. How amazing is that. And if you want to know what it sounds like on the surface mars if you have ever wondered. This is it. It sounds a bit like dartmoor. Its windy. Lets speak to bbc science Correspondentjonathan Amos Hill has been waiting all weekend for this footage that has finally emerged. What you think we have learnt . , emerged. What you think we have learnt . , , learnt . Oh, i could barely sleep throu~h learnt . Oh, i could barely sleep through the learnt . Oh, i could barely sleep through the weekend learnt . Oh, i could barely sleep through the weekend waiting i learnt . Oh, i could barely sleep| through the weekend waiting for learnt . Oh, i could barely sleep through the weekend waiting for this video to come down. If you didnt know it was real, if you didnt know it was real you would think this was sci fi. It is extraordinary, it really is. I mean, we get the last four minutes, essentially, of the rovefs four minutes, essentially, of the rover s descent down to the surface of mars so it comes in in this capsule and then after about, you know, sort of three minutes or so, it opens this parachute, this supersonic parachute. This vehicle is travelling, you know, faster than the Speed Of Sound on mars at this point and that parachute has to open precisely otherwise it is game over, missiondead, and it is something that the engineers have never seen. You cannot test this on earth. Theres different gravity, different atmosphere. They try and test it in the high atmosphere of earth but they dont rely nail it is going to work and so they send it to but for the they dont really know it is going to work until they send it to mars so for the engineers at nasa this really is manna from heaven as they can really see what their inventions and hardware does when they are trying to land on mars. I mean, it is incredible. Grab the popcorn. All the way down to the surface. Then you touch down. You even look back up at this crazy Sky Crane Arrangement you have, this rocket backpack, as it flies after crash a few hundred metres away. Terrific. We have never ever seen anything like this and here is the amazing thing, guys. At the top of this mast. There are literally thousands of images that have gone back to earth. Just these video sequences, in excess of 20,000 frames, huge volumes of data that they pull back on satellites at a few megabits per second and we would all complain now if we had a Broadband Connection that was just a few megabits per second spot that is what they deal with at mars and they can still it down. It was a bit of mumbling and grumbling at the weekend from all the fans because they didnt have immediate access to the pictures but it takes a little while for it all to come back. It is all there now and if you have got the desire you can go on a website and you can rummage through thousands and thousands of pictures. It is rummage through thousands and thousands of pictures. Donald trumps departure from the white house wasnt quite enough to bring the us and the eu together on Foreign Policy at least not physically. But today, at a Virtual Meeting between Secretary Of State Antony Blinken and his eu counterparts they do appear to be, on most things, on the same political page. In consultation with the white house, the eu decided today to impose further sanctions on russia over the jailing of the Opposition Leader alexei navalny. The ministers have agreed to target four of the individuals responsible, saying that russia is drifting towards an authoritarian state. I think what were seeing as you said in this statement is a new innovative cooperation on doing the enmity between the United States and the European Union during the Trump Administration and with the Biden Administration and with the Biden Administration now trying to repair some of our relationships with our european allies. Russia is a bit of a tough nut here for them to crack because there are a number of issues, especially over a security, Energy Security, that are quite problematic now between United States and the europeans. European security. Particularly the north stream to pipeline. Iliruiith european security. Particularly the north stream to pipeline. With that one month of north stream to pipeline. So a lot has been lost, actually, in russia effectively . So a lot has been lost, actually, in that i russia effectively . So a lot has i been lost, actually, in that respect because the United States under trump pursued this America First strategy. It turned out to be america alone and so we pulled out, for example, the few troops that we had in syria at least and russia rushed in. Pardon me. Russia rushing but they were able to fill the gap and changing the facts on the ground in syria so we will have absolutely no say whatsoever in any kind of settlement that comes out of sylvia. Similarly that comes out of sylvia. Similarly, disrupting relationships with our european allies and trying to disrupt relationships within europe. We sat back and really didnt do much to help in any of those areas and so the world looks a little bit different as a result forjoe biden coming back in and the United States, i think also lost a loss of two forced among our close allies. Also lost a lot of trust between our close allies. I sensed today that he actually toughened up his message butjust coming back to the point you made about Energy Security when they are building nord stream too and i know they are rushing to finish it in case more sanctions come in but how can germany and the others talk a tough line on russia when the become dependent on them for natural gas . I will concern him i in the United States and why we have companies that have cooperated in Constructing Nord Stream Two which runs from russia in the Baltic States to germany is to try and stop this dependence on russian energy. The problem, of course, its that germany meets the energy as it wins itself off nuclear and coal Energy Sources so where is the best place to get natural gas that is close by . It is russia, they have a lot of it and there already is a Nord Stream One Pipeline so Nord Stream Two is within100 miles, 90 complaint, and there had been sanctions against these companies that were trying to build it such that we had essentially shut it down until earlier this month when construction has begun again. 90 complete. Im pretty confident it is going to be completed this spring and, of course, the German Government is very interested in having it completed because it needs the energy but on the flip side russia also needs the money from selling it so there is a mutual dependency bar. Very interesting. Not having a lot of noise from the Biden Administration pushing back yet on Nord Stream Two. Kaplan, thank you very much forjoining us there from stanford. Kathryn, thank you very much forjoining us. Hugely differing Weather Fortunes across the uk from south east to north west over the next couple of days. Now, mild for all, but some parts will turn exceptionally mild. Just want to show you the temperatures for the eastern side of england on wednesday. Itll be dry, therell be some hazy sunshine from yorkshire, lincolnshire, east anglia into the south east. The warmest weather of the year so far. Look to the west, especially north west, though, its still mild, but temperatures arent as high. Thats the other side of the weather story this week. There is more rain on the way, particularly for Northern Ireland, for cumbria and in scotland, where rain totals will mount as this Weather System just hangs around for tuesday into wednesday, bringing a risk of getting some furtherflooding, especially in scotland, where the met office has an Amber Warning covering much of the southern uplands, southern highlands, where a few places may get in excess of 100 mm of rain. Its also going to be very windy with that as well. Hasnt quite arrived, though, and today, well, in cumbria, weve had the blue sky across much of scotland and Northern Ireland, but tonight, we are going to get the rain moving in. The winds picking up as well. It will turn quite chilly for a time under clear skies to the east, with one or two fog patches, a few pockets of frost, though. Here, too, temperaturesjust creep up a couple of degrees by the time we get to the morning. So, tomorrow, then, that Weather System will bring rain into Northern Ireland. Rain preceded by a bit of snow to the higher hills in scotland. Rain becoming heavy and persistent in cumbria. Just fringing other Western Areas of england and parts of wales, whereas central and Eastern England staying mainly dry. Some hazy sunshine the further east you are. A windier day for us all. Northern ireland and scotland, though, could on exposed coasts get some gusts around 70 mph, so the winds may well be disruptive. But regardless of whether youre dry or you get more rain, it is going to be very mild. Now, that Weather System hangs around tuesday night into wednesday, with more rain at times for wales, Western Parts of england, into Northern Ireland and scotland. So, it mayjust ease from here a little bit as we go on into wednesday. Eastern parts of england, though, with that hazy sunshine, its where you get that unusual february warmth as temperatures reach into the high teens. Big change, though, going towards the end of the week, where we get High Pressure building in and the weathers going be settling down. Afte a few showers on thursday, where it has been very wet, itll be much drier. And although a little cooler, still mild. Well examine the impact the pandemic has had on dating with the first dates ringmaster of love maitre d fred sirieix. A raft of new studies published in the uk today establish for the first time that the Vaccine Rollout is curtailing the spread and severity of the virus. In england the study looked at data on the Pfizer Vaccine from the first two months of immunisation. It found that 3 weeks after a first dose was given the risk of hospitalization and death was reduced by at least 75 among over the over 80s. In scotland a separate study into both the pfizer and the astrazeneca vaccines showed similar results; the risk of hospitalisation among over 80s was cut by 81 . A third study of Hospital Workers in england found a single dose of the pfizer jab cut the risk of being infected by more than 70 , rising to 85 after the second dose. And all of this on top of that study in israel, reported this weekend, which showed the Pfizer Vaccine greatly reduces transmission. All of that hugely postive. But the uk government nonetheless remains cautious. As does president Bidens Administration which is reminding people a return to normality is still some way off. Heres Dr Anthony Fauci mr bidens Chief Medical Adviser speaking yesterday. You and the president has suggested that we will approach normality toward the end of the year. What does normal mean, do you think americans will still be Wearing Masks, for example, in 2022 . You know, i think it is possible that that is the case. But heres the thing. Cases are trending down, both in the uk and the us. We know the vaccines work we know they are effective against the new strands of the virus. Even the rollouts are going to plan. So why are medical professionals still urging such caution . Lets ask one Infectious Diseases physician dr Payal Pateljoins us from ann arbour michigan. Doctor patel, thank you so much for coming back on the programme. I have feel like ive got a weekend of conflicting news come a lot of data coming out suggesting there is a lot of good news surrounding the vaccines and yet we have Health Professionals saying hold on a second, be careful, you have still got to do all the things like Social Distancing and may be for a long time yet to come, what are they worried about if the vaccine news is so positive . So positive . Yeah, i think for a lona so positive . Yeah, i think for a long time so positive . Yeah, i think for a long time we so positive . Yeah, i think for a long time we have so positive . Yeah, i think for a long time we have been i so positive . Yeah, i think for a | long time we have been looking so positive . Yeah, i think for a i long time we have been looking for ood long time we have been looking for good news. And youve got to remember that this is a slow game. We dont remember that this is a slow game. We dont want to celebrate before we are there we dont want to celebrate before we are there yet. Its going to be a slow are there yet. Its going to be a slow incline to getting people vaccine, slow incline to getting people vaccine, if you go by everyone you know vaccine, if you go by everyone you know and vaccine, if you go by everyone you know and how many people come all of us know know and how many people come all of us know that know and how many people come all of us know that are still unvaccinated. We are us know that are still unvaccinated. We are not us know that are still unvaccinated. We are not there just yet. We are on the way we are not there just yet. We are on the way finally, but we dont want to relax the way finally, but we dont want to relax restrictions when we know that they to relax restrictions when we know that they have been making a difference. So i think of the way the england is going about this, in a measured way and thinking about getting a measured way and thinking about getting kids back in school, but may be holding getting kids back in school, but may be holding up on things like gins and pubs, be holding up on things like gins and pubs, thats a really good and measured and pubs, thats a really good and measured way to think about things. We knew measured way to think about things. We knew the vaccines were going to stop people from getting very sick, and its nice to have that confirmation from that series of studies, but it seems to me that that study that is coming out of israel about the Pfizer Vaccine reducing transmission, that could be quite a game changer, cut into . Ii quite a game changer, cut into . If we think about all of the vaccines that we we think about all of the vaccines that we have come we know that most vaccines that we have come we know that most vaccines do that we have come we know that most vaccines do reduce transmission, but we needed vaccines do reduce transmission, but we needed data. So that is really positive we needed data. So that is really positive news. Ithink we needed data. So that is really positive news. I think that with more positive news. I think that with more and positive news. I think that with more and more information, more people more and more information, more people getting vaccinated, all of these people getting vaccinated, all of these things will make masks less of a reality these things will make masks less of a reality but its not going to be an on a reality but its not going to be an on and a reality but its not going to be an on and off switch, is going to be an on and off switch, is going to be a gradual an on and off switch, is going to be a gradual switch. | an on and off switch, is going to be a gradual switch. A gradual switch. I was talking the last hour, looking a gradual switch. I was talking the last hour, looking a a gradual switch. I was talking the last hour, looking a report a gradual switch. I was talking the last hour, looking a report about i last hour, looking a report about the confidence people have in the government approach and theres some new polling just out from this evening, 52 said they are satisfied with this cautious approach of the government is set out. Only 17 were dissatisfied. And ijust wonder, well tonight we are going to have this really grim total in the United States, half a Million People who have died in the pandemic so far. Do you think a sort of slow coming out of all of the restrictions the United States is facing, do you think it would be as positive as 52 . , ~. , 4 think it would be as positive as 52 . , ~. , ~. , think it would be as positive as 52 . , ~. , ~. , i , think it would be as positive as 52 . , ~. , ~. , i ,. , 52 . You know, i think that 100 of eole are 5296 . You know, i think that 10096 of people are just 5296 . You know, i think that 10096 of people are just frustrated 5296 . You know, i think that 10096 of people are just frustrated and i 5296 . You know, i think that 10096 of people are just frustrated and done i people are just frustrated and done with this people are just frustrated and done with this whole situation. And we have with this whole situation. And we have to with this whole situation. And we have to remember that the government only plays have to remember that the government only plays one part in the piece. So lockdowns only plays one part in the piece. So lockdowns and restrictions are an important lockdowns and restrictions are an important part but other parts are personal important part but other parts are personal things that we do, do we choose personal things that we do, do we choose to personal things that we do, do we choose to get vaccinated, do we choose choose to get vaccinated, do we choose to choose to get vaccinated, do we choose to wear masks . All of those things choose to wear masks . All of those things together are kind of a layered things together are kind of a layered sandwich as to what is happening out in the world. Sol layered sandwich as to what is happening out in the world. So i am not surprised that people are frustrated. I would say have patients, frustrated. I would say have patients, get your vaccine to meet your family patients, get your vaccine to meet yourFamily Members to patients, get your vaccine to meet your Family Members to get the vaccine your Family Members to get the vaccine. The quicker we do that the better vaccine. The quicker we do that the Better Things will be. It vaccine. The quicker we do that the Better Things will be. Better things will be. It does strike me Better Things will be. It does strike me can Better Things will be. It does strike me can we Better Things will be. It does strike me can we were i Better Things will be. It does. Strike me can we were talking Better Things will be. It does strike me can we were talking about this earlier that people have almost got used to these restrictions. Do you think that once we get the vaccine, once we get into 2022 that people will be shaking hands again, hugging each other again, here in the uk there will be going to night clubs. That seems extraordinary to me at the moment. When we we mean normal normal . I me at the moment. When we we mean normal normal . Normal normal . I think its going to be ust a normal normal . I think its going to be just a little normal normal . I think its going to be just a little while normal normal . I think its going to be just a little while before normal normal . I think its going to be just a little while before it i normal normal . I think its going to be just a little while before it is i be just a little while before it is normal be just a little while before it is normal normal normal. And we have gotten normal normal normal. And we have gotten used normal normal normal. And we have gotten used to the new normal. But they keep gotten used to the new normal. But they keep their own personal choices about they keep their own personal choices about maybe what is a safer choice to get about maybe what is a safer choice to get weather that is getting a haircut. To get weather that is getting a haircut, seeing grandparents, doing those haircut, seeing grandparents, doing those small steps of what we used to think about those small steps of what we used to think about being normal, we will et think about being normal, we will get there think about being normal, we will get there in time. Maybe starting with some get there in time. Maybe starting with some of the things that are most with some of the things that are most important to us stop you that we were most important to us stop you that we were saying earlier that the reason we were saying earlier that the reason theyve been so cautious is because reason theyve been so cautious is because of reason theyve been so cautious is because of the variance. The uk variant, because of the variance. The uk variant, they call it the uk variance. Variant, they call it the uk variance, i dont know whether he originated variance, i dont know whether he originated here or not, but they say its now originated here or not, but they say its now ten originated here or not, but they say its now ten to 15 of the new cases in florida its now ten to 15 of the new cases in florida. Similar figure its now ten to 15 of the new cases in florida. Similarfigure in southern in florida. Similarfigure in southern california. The variance or taking southern california. The variance or taking hold southern california. The variance or taking hold in the United States, do you think taking hold in the United States, do you think that might change the trajectory you are on at the moment . Ithink trajectory you are on at the moment . I think the trajectory you are on at the moment . I think the most important thing is going i think the most important thing is going to i think the most important thing is going to be the Vaccination Rates and what going to be the Vaccination Rates and what we think of as herd immunity. Thats the single most important immunity. Thats the single most important variable, and so if that pace important variable, and so if that pace goes important variable, and so if that pace goes faster than how the virus is mutating pace goes faster than how the virus is mutating that will be the most important is mutating that will be the most important thing of how long things are going important thing of how long things are going to take. Gk. Important thing of how long things are going to take. Important thing of how long things are going to take. 0k. Doctor patel, thank ou are going to take. 0k. Doctor patel, thank you so are going to take. 0k. Doctor patel, thank you so much are going to take. 0k. Doctor patel, thank you so much for are going to take. 0k. Doctor patel, thank you so much forjoining i are going to take. 0k. Doctor patel, thank you so much forjoining us i thank you so much forjoining us there. From michigan. And so interesting about this next between a lot of good news from the light at the end of the tunnel takes this incredible work they have done in the vaccine so fast and get this culture which is heard there from doctor patel, take it slow they jeopardise the gains that we have been made. Seems to be what Public Health people are saying. I been made. Seems to be what Public Health people are saying. Health people are saying. I think are two issues. Health people are saying. I think are two issues. The Health People are saying. I think are two issues. The prime i Health People are saying. I think i are two issues. The Prime Ministers that today he is following the data and i think a lot of people would welcome the caution, but i think the data works two ways. Will they be in the same political may if we have a very small number of hospitalisations and a very small number of deaths . At that point as cautious as they are you would anticipate they are going to have to unlock a lot quicker. Unlock a lot quicker. Although they have made it unlock a lot quicker. Although they have made it very unlock a lot quicker. Although they have made it very clear unlock a lot quicker. Although they have made it very clear that unlock a lot quicker. Although they have made it very clear that do i unlock a lot quicker. Although they have made it very clear that do notj have made it very clear that do not want to. If the vaccines are working getting what i very fast to think you are right, there will be huge pressure to lift and the weather gets warmer people are not going to tolerate the kind of lockdown you have had for so long. The position of Attorney General is one of the most senior positions in the Us Government and under the trump adminstration it was also one of the most controversial. President bidens nominee. Judge merrick garland, was today appearing before the senatejudiciary committee, for the first day of his confirmation hearing. You may recall that four years ago the 68 year old was Barack Obamas pick for the Supreme Court to replacejustice scalia, but was denied a hearing by the Republican Senate leader mitch mcconnell. That spot eventually went to president trumps nomination neil gorsuch. During the questioning today judge garland vowed to restore thejustice departments independence, and to pursue prosecutions of those who participated in the january 6th attack on the capitol. If confirmed, i will supervise the prosecution of White Supremacists and others who stormed to the capitol on january 6th. A heinous attack that sought to disrupt a cornerstone of our democracy, the peaceful transfer of power to a newly elected government. Speaking of the Us Supreme Court weve had a ruling today, on a case involving the former president donald trump, who you will know filled 3 spots on the bench. It doesnt seem to have done him any favours. The court rejected his attempts to stop a grand jury in new york seeing his tax returns and other financial records. A lower court had ruled the records were pertinent to a criminal investigation. Mr trump has refused to make public his tax records, despite a long standing precedent that candidates for the presidency should do so. Lets bring in the bbc s senior north america reporter anthony zurcher. Anthony thank you so much for joining us. It is not that much of a surprise that donald trump would end p surprise that donald trump would end up being forced to release his tax returns to a grand jury, but he did manage to delay this moment until after the election, and i suppose in some sense that is a victory for him. ,. Some sense that is a victory for him. , ,. , some sense that is a victory for him. , ,. , him. That seems to be the strategy that he was him. That seems to be the strategy that he was pursuing him. That seems to be the strategy that he was pursuing since him. That seems to be the strategy that he was pursuing since even i that he was pursuing since even before that he was pursuing since even before he that he was pursuing since even before he was first elected president in 2016. Trying to drag this out president in 2016. Trying to drag this out in president in 2016. Trying to drag this out. In 2016 he said well once im this out. In 2016 he said well once im done this out. In 2016 he said well once im done with an audit i will release im done with an audit i will release that, i will release at some point release that, i will release at some point in release that, i will release at some point in the release that, i will release at some point in the future. That went by year point in the future. That went by year by point in the future. That went by year by year and month by month until year by year and month by month until congress was taken over by the democrats until congress was taken over by the democrats and they started issuing subpoenas from a new york attorneys started subpoenas from a new york attorneys started conducting these investigations, and then it became a leal investigations, and then it became a legal battle. In those legal battles take time. Your number four months ao take time. Your number four months ago when take time. Your number four months ago when the Supreme Court first issued ago when the Supreme Court first issued the ago when the Supreme Court first issued the ruling on this case handing issued the ruling on this case handing it back down to the lower court handing it back down to the lower court for handing it back down to the lower court for a handing it back down to the lower court for a few more arguments. Now finally court for a few more arguments. Now finally it court for a few more arguments. Now finally it appears that donald trump has been finally it appears that donald trump has been at the end of the legal road. Has been at the end of the legal road. That has been at the end of the legal road, that the documents will be handed road, that the documents will be handed over but not by donald trump by his handed over but not by donald trump by his Accounting Firm. He can even ust by his Accounting Firm. He can even just refused by his Accounting Firm. He can even just refused to comply with the court just refused to comply with the court order, Accounting Firm said they court order, Accounting Firm said they will court order, Accounting Firm said they will handed over. The manhattan da did tweet they will handed over. The manhattan da did tweet today they will handed over. The manhattan da did tweet today that they will handed over. The manhattan da did tweet today that the they will handed over. The manhattan da did tweet today that the work i da did tweet today that the work continues which does not sound like it will advance anytime soon. Is there a prospects do you think that at some point these tax returns are going to be made public or will it always forever remain a secret scene by The Grand Jury . By the grand ury . Right now as you mentioned if by The Grand Jury . Right now as you mentioned if the by The Grand Jury . Right now as you mentioned if the grand by The Grand Jury . Right now as you mentioned if The Grand Jury mentioned if The Grand Jury investigation, those are sealed, if the prosecution charges him in court and they the prosecution charges him in court and they will have to introduce that evidence and they will have to introduce that evidence in and they will have to introduce that evidence in order to support their Court Evidence in order to support their court case evidence in order to support their court case, so at that point conceivably the details of the tax returns conceivably the details of the tax returns can be made public, if at some returns can be made public, if at some Point Returns can be made public, if at some point further down the road they decide to open up the grand ury they decide to open up The Grand Jury investigation that could be a case Jury Investigation that could be a case for Jury Investigation that could be a case for the public where they see it. Just case for the public where they see it. Just remember the New York Times did see it. Just remember the New York Times did see a it. Just remember the New York Times did see a big it. Just remember the New York Times did see a big chunk of the tax returns. Did see a big chunk of the tax returns, they wrote multiple stories on what returns, they wrote multiple stories on what they contained about paying very small on what they contained about paying very small amounts of federal taxes about very small amounts of federal taxes about massive debt owed to various banks, about massive debt owed to various banks, so about massive debt owed to various banks, so we have a pretty good idea what will banks, so we have a pretty good idea what will be banks, so we have a pretty good idea what will be in there. But when prosecutors are poring over them looking prosecutors are poring over them looking for prosecutors are poring over them looking for criminal stuff thats an entirely looking for criminal stuff thats an entirely different thing. We looking for criminal stuff thats an entirely different thing. Entirely different thing. We have not entirely different thing. We have got breaking entirely different thing. We have got Breaking News entirely different thing. We have got Breaking News and entirely different thing. We have got Breaking News and thats i entirely different thing. We have got Breaking News and thats we | got Breaking News and thats we mentioned earlier in the programme but the United States now has passed that Agreement Milestone of 500,000 people who have died from the coronavirus. A year after first restrictions were imposed about a year after we first in the west really started hearing about this for now america has had more covid deaths than any other country in the world. We have seen the numbers explode with the last month or two and sadly we have literally in the last few minutes just passed eight, 500,000 people have died of the coronavirus. And anthony we have been hearing from Trumpet Ministration officials of the course of the last weekend, as we approach this milestone that it did not need to be this way. America did not need to be this way. America did not need to be this way. America did not need to be the world leader in coronavirus deaths and reach this extraordinary figure. Yes its a grim milestone and the Budget Administration is memorialising it tonight with public events, and even just that alone is different than what we saw with the Trump Administration. Very reluctant to talk about the growing death toll. And it dismissed the extent of the problem very early on. Donald trump downplaying the threat being posed by the virus, that there were problems with testing, problems with rolling out ppe, protective gear. If you look at other countries its a sad tale to say that the United States is leading in this market and is a testament to a lack of preparation and a lack of response over the past year. Ok, anthony thank you very much forjoining us. In decades to come as people know analyse this pandemic they will look back at this moment when there seems to be, as we have been talking about, quite a lot of good news of round to the coronavirus. We do, as borisjohnson said today, finally has some light at the end of the tunnel. But 500,000 people have died to commit thats 500,000 peoples loved ones who have mourned the loss of somebody who would not have died under normal circumstances. And there will be a lot of questions asked about whether that Many Americans need to have lost their lives, 100 Million People infected with this virus and no half a Million People have died. I think its always Million People have died. I think its always important Million People have died. I think its always important in Million People have died. I think its always important in a Million People have died. I think its always important in a case. Million people have died. I think. Its always important in a case like this you remember that this is someones father, brother, mother, sister, colleague and each and every one of them is an individual story. And you know the really sad thing to say is we are not at the end of it. We are at 500,000 now and we still have two or three months to run until the vaccinations really start to have an impact. That death toll is going to rise even further. It is a very sad day for the United States and for everybody. The a very sad day for the United States and for everybody. A, lot a very sad day for the United States and for everybody. And for everybody. A lot of people have lost people and for everybody. A lot of people have lost people and and for everybody. A lot of people have lost people and they and for everybody. A lot of people have lost people and they have i and for everybody. A lot of people i have lost people and they have lost them in really hard circumstances. People dying alone in hospital which has been very, very tough for loved ones as well. To stay with us, we will have more news. And how do teenagers and parents navigate the choppy waters of teen love during a pandemic . Well talk to first dates fred sirieix, next. Now billy monger likes a challenge. After becoming a double amputee following an horrific racing crash in 2017, he returned to motorsport a year later, and went on to finish on 3rd in his first solo competitive race back. He was stilljust 18. Now, hes taking on his biggest task outside of a racing car. Hes aiming to walk, cycle and kayak 140 miles in four days for comic relief. Tim muffett reports. It still feels so surreal that it is happening. Ive never done anything like this before. Its completely different to motorsport, my background in racing. And what an extraordinary background it is. Billy lost both his legs in a Motor Racing Accident in 2017. We met him nine months later as he got back behind the wheel for the first time. You have your prosthetics here and you are still able to control the car and the pedals. Many people will find that extraordinary. When you control the pedal normally, you do it all through your ankle, thats how you control how much input youre putting into the pedals. But with me, because i havent got ankles, the way i simply control it is just through my leg like this. This will be another enormous challenge. A 140 mile triathlon across england in four days. Walking, cycling and kayaking. It is also such a wonderful cause and i know you will be the inspiration that you were born to be. So good luck, billy. Billy, youre such an inspiration, youre an extraordinary person l and im honoured to call you a friend. Lets be honest, youre going i to absolutely beat this challenge. You could pretty much do the whole thing with me on your back. But failing that, i i am there in spirit. Lots of love, good luck. It will be a pretty sensational and special feeling. Really trying to challenge myself. There is no denying this pandemic has been especially hard for teenagers and young adults. This is the time when they find their own way in the world, create their own social circles, and most importantly, many will discover their first love. Whether it is that first Fling Scuppered by Coronavirus Lockdowns or whether it is simply flirting in the sixth form common room, they are genuinely important moments in all our lives who among us doesnt remember our first crush . So how do teenagers rekindle those relationships during a pandemic, and how do parents navigate the frustrations that are bound to set in . Is social media an avenue that can help kindle romance or is there no real substitute for those first encounters. Have you ever been in a relationship . Ive been in like one. Like a serious one . The relationship only lasted for like one week. One week . Oh my goodness, thats not. It happened. It was in year eight. Yeareight . Yeah. Yeah, year eight does not count. Year eight we were silly little kids. I i dont know, i remember my teen years being excruciating. Thats a clip from teen first dates which airs on elt in the uk at 10pm tonight and here to disucss teen love in lockdown is the first date maitre d and ringmaster of love fred sirieix. We are now into the final week of meteorological winter, the three months which for statistical purposes meteorologists classify as winter, and appropriately there are more hints of spring coming in now on your weather watcher pictures. And that will be helped to some degree by the very mild air coming in from the south this week. I want to show you the temperatures for parts of Eastern England, from yorkshire, lincolnshire down into east anglia. The southeast on wednesday. The warmest weather of the year so far. Dry, therell be hazy sunshine. Further west, especially northwest it is still mild, but temperatures are not as high. Thats because theres another side to this weeks weather. And thats the wet one. And we will see more heavy rain moving in, these are rain totals for the rest of the week. Especially for Northern Ireland, cumbria and into scotland. Low pressure to the west of us. It is drawing that mild air in from the south, but bringing this wriggling Weather Front that sits across many of the same areas tuesday and into wednesday. With the risk of flooding, maybe parts of Northern Ireland, but especially in scotland where the met office Amber Warning. Southern uplands, southern highlands, some spots may get over 100 mm of rain, and its also going to be very windy with that as well. So this is where the rain is enduring tuesday. Rain at times into Northern Ireland, some bursts of heavy rain into scotland. For northwest england, for cumbria and just fringing at times in parts of wales and other areas to the west of england. Where central and eastern parts stay dry. It is windierfor all, but these gusts in Northern Ireland and scotland, some coastal parts may be approaching 70 mph. So there may be disruption from the wind as well as the rain, but it is mild to very mild. And that same Weather Front will hang around the same areas tuesday night into wednesday. Some rain at times for wales again. Western areas of england, for Northern Ireland and scotland. Whereas the further east you are in england you get that hazy sunshine, and you get that unusual february warmth as temperatures head into the high teens. Now, that Weather Front weakens considerably as it finally begins to clear away eastwards going into thursday. That means theres barely any rain left on it. There may still be a hang back of cloud for a time into east anglia and south east england. It may be a few spots of rain. But elsewhere with sunny spells a chance of catching a shower on a wind which is now instead of southerly, west south westerly. Slightly cooler air mass moving in so the temperatures may come down a few degrees, but still above average for the time of year. And then there is a significant weather change coming our way for the end of the week and into the weekend even beyond that. Look at this High Pressure moving in, and that is settling things down. If you are worried about all of the rain coming that does mean drier weather. May still be a bit of patchy rain as we start friday, and parts of northern scotland, but actually most places during friday will have a dry day. And indeed again on saturday. With the High Pressure. Diverting areas of low pressure well to the north, but there are still trailing Weather Fronts coming around the low pressure systems, so there is a chance of seeing a bit more cloud at times, at least into Northern Ireland and scotland that may still have a bit of patchy rain on saturday. But the vast majority will stay dry. This Weather Pattern will last for sunday and into the start of next week as well. I just want to put on the jet streams for you as well. To the north of us with this High Pressure over us, on the mild side of the jet as well. But in terms of feeling springlike it may just be that overnight temperatures dipped down again, mayjust see a touch of frost, one or two fog patches. But overall it will feel quite pleasant by day with temperatures at or above average, and if it is some drier weather you want it is coming. Tonight at 10 00. England gets a road map out of lockdown and it stretches over four months. The gradual lifting of restrictions starts in two weeks, but pubs and restaurants wont be fully open until mid may at the earliest. All children in england will go Back To School on the 8th march the first step on a road the Prime Minister says is irreversible. Were now travelling on a one way Road To Freedom and we can begin safely to restart our lives and do it with confidence. But and do it with confidence. Rules may be in place in form but rules may be in place in one form or another until early summer. It is slow and steady, the government determined this lockdown will be government determined this lockdown will be the government determined this lockdown will be the last. Well have more detail and well be talking about the possibility of carrying vaccine passports, at home and abroad
