Despite the results of the vote on Donald Trumps conviction in the court of impeachment, he deserves to be convicted, and i believe he will be convicted in the court of public opinion. An extension to the ban on evictions in england the government says it will ensure tenants wont be forced out of their homes by the pandemic. And skating on thin ice a rare winter event could return to the netherlands, thanks to the cold weather, but will covid restrictions sink it . Very good afternoon to you. In the past hour we have heard that more than 15 Million People in the uk have now had a dose of the grella virus vaccine. Borisjohnson has said it is a significant milestone,. But that there is still, a Long Way To Go and there will undoubtedly be bumps in the road. The Prime Minister said the government had hit its target of offering everyone in the top four Priority Groups in the Uk A Vaccination by mid february. The vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi tweeted this a short while ago, lets talk about this now our health correspondent, laura foster, is here. The 15th of february, 15 million. One day beforehand. Which categories, though . So one day beforehand. Which categories, though . One day beforehand. Which cateuuories, thouh . ,. , categories, though . So they havent one into a categories, though . So they havent gone into a lot categories, though . So they havent gone into a lot of categories, though . So they havent gone into a lot of detail categories, though . So they havent gone into a lot of detail about categories, though . So they havent gone into a lot of detail about what l gone into a lot of detail about what we 15 million refers to. Bear with me, its a little bit confusing. So in the top four Priority Groups there are roughly 15 Million People and now this is why the government may be singing from the rooftops about this 15 million figure, but we know that there are more people getting vaccinated who arent in those top four Priority Groups. For instance, some of the over 65 is. But as we have heard from Boris Johnson in the last 15 minutes, they say they have offered the vaccine to everyone and those Priority Groups, but what we dont know is exactly what percentage of those Priority Groups have taken up the offer. But it sounds as though the government said both of its targets, in other words they were going to offer this to those people in the Priority Groups and according to the latest information i have seen in the papers this morning and on websites is that only 1 have refused that in the over 80s and more than 50 million have been 15 million have been vaccinated, even if they have had to go to the other tiers below the first four. The first four. Yes, its important to find out the first four. Yes, its important to find out whats the first four. Yes, its important to find out whats on the first four. Yes, its important to find out whats on offer the first four. Yes, its important to find out whats on offer is. The first four. Yes, its important to find out whats on offer is. So | to find out whats on offer is. So thatis to find out whats on offer is. So that is a call, text, and e mail. It doesnt necessarily mean that they have had the direct contact. There might be someone who have been sent a letter and they will be people who have sent letters, but that may be they cant read the letter. We know from statistics last week that uptake of very high, 93 uptake among the over 75 is, which was the case last week. Obviously Everyone Wants to see the uptake of equally high when the data is released tomorrow that is what borisjohnson was teasing out in the video he released in the last half hour. {lila released in the last half hour. Ok, so from here released in the last half hour. Ok, so from here on released in the last half hour. Ok, so from here on who is going to get it . We got 5569 so from here on who is going to get it . We got 55 69 year olds. When will that age group come down even lower . 50 will that age group come down even lower . ,. ,. ,. , lower . So from tomorrow, officially across the country, lower . So from tomorrow, officially across the country, over lower . So from tomorrow, officially across the country, over 65 lower . So from tomorrow, officially across the country, over 65 is lower . So from tomorrow, officially across the country, over 65 is and l across the country, over 65 is and the clinically vulnerable. We already know that some of the over 60s are starting to be vaccinated as well and that will continue to go down the ranks, so then it is the one and then the over 50s, so that is the next phase, but what we are going to see in the next couple of months as all those people who have been rushing to get their firstjab, youve got to get them in for their second child, as well as those people who want their first dose, so thatis people who want their first dose, so that is why so many Vaccination Centres have been appearing across the uk because they really need to train as many people as possible, keeping that momentum going, whilst making sure people go back for their second. , making sure people go back for their second. 3. , making sure people go back for their second. ,. , , second. Lets clarify there because eole second. Lets clarify there because peeple were second. Lets clarify there because people were originally second. Lets clarify there because people were originally saying second. Lets clarify there because people were originally saying the l people were originally saying the second dose was going to be within three or four weeks of that first job, but that has now been extended to up to four months, but there is no question of that second jab being allowed to just fade away . So no question of that second ab being allowed to just fade away . Allowed to ust fade away . So when ou no for allowed to just fade away . So when you go for your allowed to just fade away . So when you go for your first allowed to just fade away . So when you go for your first vaccination you go for your first vaccination you go for your first vaccination you get booked in for your second one. The first one was Margaret Keenan back on the 8th Of December and back then youre right, it was within 21 days they said then, but it was on new years eve and new years day they were thinking, hang on, this is the situation we are in the uk right now, we really need to give as many people as possible protection and given the majority of your protection comes with your first dose, the priority was to roll it out to as many people as possible. That is why the doses are taking up to 12 weeks and a lot of research that shows that gap between the two doses still works, that is fine, that is safe. That is that is what is going to be happening over the next few months, but if you think about it 12 weeks from the 1st Of January you think about it 12 weeks from the 1st Ofjanuary you are think about it 12 weeks from the 1st Of January you are looking at think about it 12 weeks from the 1st Ofjanuary you are looking at mid march or the end of march and that is when youre going to have a lot ofjuggling to be done by the nhs staff and volunteers. find ofjuggling to be done by the nhs staff and volunteers. Could be issues with supply, but thatis could be issues with supply, but that is something the government denies and says the uk is actually in a very strong position. Obviously we cant predict the future, but they will be saying the supply will be good and we will be able to keep up be good and we will be able to keep up with this pace. fik. Meanwhile, the government is coming under pressure from a group of its own conservative backbench mps to speed up the route out of lockdown. The mps known as the Covid Recovery group want all legal restrictions on peoples freedoms to be eased by may. But the foreign secretary, dominic raab, has rejected their call he says easing the lockdown has to be done cautiously, and be based on the success of the vaccine in bringing down deaths and hospitalisations. Heres our political correspondent, nick eardley. Scenes like these have become eerily familiar. The centre of london, more like a Disaster Film than a thriving city. But as the number of cases and deaths falls and the number of people who have had a vaccine rises, the government is under pressure from some mps to start opening up again. We share all of the ambition and the desire to get out of this lockdown. We want to do it responsibly and safely and therefore, its got to be based on the evidence, which is what we said from the outset. But youve got to be able to monitor it in real time, which is why i think saying what we are going to do with precision and as a guarantee by the end of april and beginning of may is difficult to do at this stage. Ministers are likely to confirm that the 15 million most at risk in the uk have been offered a first dose of the vaccine. Everyone over 50 will now be offered one by the end of april and some conservatives say that should be the point where all restrictions are lifted. Its not arbitrary at all, its completely tied to the roll out of the Vaccination Programme and the fact that you are then protecting the most Vulnerable People from death and serious disease from covid, from the fantastically successful Vaccination Programme the nhs has undertaken. There are slightly different plans in different parts of the uk, but for england, the Prime Minister will set out the road map out of lockdown a week on monday, the 22nd. Ministers hope the schools will be able to reopen on the 8th of march. That is likely to be followed by more outdoor recreation. Then nonessential shops would start to open again, followed by hospitality, pubs and restaurants serving again. Some, though, have expressed frustration and say pubs should be allowed to open soon. We think we can open very safely for easter weekend. We understand, as i said, that there would be social restrictions in place, like there were injuly and we will absolutely administer those to the letter and we would ensure that we have a responsibility for our customers and our staff. But there are warnings from some scientists that moving too quickly could risk a resurgence in the virus. There are political warnings, too. This lockdown has to be the final lockdown, by the way. The strategic aim is to do everything we can now, so we dont have to go back into a lockdown. Parts of the economy will start to move again soon and, next week, we will find out more details of when. Nick eardley, bbc news. The bosses of deliveroo and more than 300 Restaurant Businesses have written to the Prime Minister asking for more support to help their industry survive the pandemic. Among their demands, to extend the current Vat Reduction and Business Rates relief and a proposal to renew the eat out to help out scheme when its safe to do so. And all those staff, all who are employed and staff will be unemployed. They really need to help, the government. I mean, the eat out to help out was very good. Why not government help us on that again . Ok, i know that it is a pandemic, you cannot tell people to come out and eat. Hang on a second. People to come out and eat. Hang on a second. You know, is a Business Owner, rent is too big a chunk of the money that goes towards them. Most of the landlords are not willing to reduce any of their rent, so the money that government gave us all goes towards that. It is very helpful that the government can give us some more of those funds, it is really going to help us to stand out and this if the government can cut down again for this year and next year the Business Rates, that is another big help of money, so whatever it comes in, if you get any money we can use it towards our business, so that is another help. How many people do you employ now, compared to before the pandemic and have you furloughed them . Mi 01 have you furloughed them . All of them are on have you furloughed them . The eat out to help out scheme. That was last august, wasnt it . It really helped us, but unfortunately it was only for a month and then it was cut down. So that is why i am saying if we can have that again, but i know it is a pandemic and we cant have that, so why not we do it only on takeaway and pick up and click and collect . We can really bring some money to our business. It really will help us to grow our business, so it was very good. Donald trump has hinted he could return to politics, after being acquitted in his second Impeachment Trial in the us senate. Only seven republicans joined the democrats in voting to convict the former president , meaning the vote fell short of the two thirds majority required. Of the two thirds majority, the 17 required. After the vote, mr trump said he plans to put forward what he called a, vision fora bright, radiant and limitless american future. Nomia iqbal reports from washington. Donald john trump, former president of the united states, is not guilty as charged in the article of impeachment. This wasnt a typical trial, but it had an ending we all saw coming. Nearly half of the jurors, the republican senators, had voted unsuccessfully to stop the trial from happening. The motion as agreed to. There was a plot twist when it looked like witnesses may have been called, but soon the drama concluded, making it the fastest Impeachment Trial in history. At the heart of it all was the question, did the then President Donald Trump incite a violent mob to overturn the Election Results Onjanuary 6th . Mr mcconnell, not guilty. Mr romney, guilty. Only seven republicans said yes, along with 50 democrats. That was more republicans than expected. In this security footage video. Democrats had spent three days presenting new, harrowing footage and audio showing how mr trump not only encouraged rioters, but backed them when the violence was happening. All the senators had been inside the capitol that day, including Vice President mike pence and top democrat nancy pelosi. They were targeted by the mob and had to flee. What we saw in that senate today was a cowardly group of republicans who apparently have no options, because they were afraid to defend theirjob. A lot of her anger was directed at this man, Top Republican mitch mcconnell. Theres no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day. We will never takei back our country. Tough words, but he voted to acquit mr trump on a technicality, saying it was unconstitutional to remove a president who had already left office. In a lengthy statement, donald trump said the trial was a witch hunt and that his make America Great again movement had only just begun. Nomia iqbal, bbc news, washington. It is 3 21pm. A 27 year old man has been arrested by Police Investigating nine sex attacks which took place in a city park in the space of five hours. The assaults happened in and around singleton park, swansea, on friday morning between 8am and 1pm. South Wales Police Said the man was being held in custody and called for anyone with information to come forward. This a third man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of an aspiring lawyer, who was attacked as he went to buy a bagel. 22 year old sven badzak was stabbed to death in what police have described as an unprovoked attack just over a week ago in kilburn, north west london. A 19 year old man and a 17 year old boy previously arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on bail. A ban on evictions in england is being extended until the end of march. The government says it will ensure tenants who fall behind on their rent because of the pandemic are not forced out of their homes in all but the most serious cases. But Housing Charities say it wont help the hundreds of thousands of renters who are already in arrears, asjonathan blake reports. My income went from reasonable to zero. As a parent, its really important that you feel that you can provide for your children and put a roof over their head. The pressures of the pandemic have left many, like ian, at risk of losing their home. When work as a wedding dj dried up, he had to find a newjob. While struggling to pay the rent, he was served with notice of eviction. I was working earlier this year, but i had a car accident last week, so thats stopped me from being able to get to work, but i have been able to make a full rent payment and start also paying some of the arrears, but the situation is still pretty dire at this stage, if im honest. Its estimated that at least half a million private renters in the uk have fallen into arrears during the pandemic, meaning landlords like elena are losing income. So ive just had to go through all my savings and i had to borrow more from kind friends, because, obviously, i cant take a loan because i wasjobless. I think the government shouldnt, first of all, they shouldnt pass on the sort of Welfare State onto the landlords. Confirming the extension to a ban on evictions in all but the most extreme cases, the housing Secretary Robertjenrick said the governments measures strike the right balance between protecting tenants and enabling landlords to exercise their right to justice. But across the housing sector and from opposition parties, there are calls for more financial support. Emergency grants or loans similar to schemes in scotland and wales. The government needs to make sure that the resources are there, the support is there, for people to be able to continue living in their own home and to plan for the future, so that they make good on their promise that nobody should lose their home because of coronavirus. This extension to the ban on evictions may bring some relief to those most at risk of losing their home, but there is more uncertainty ahead. Jonathan blake, bbc news. Owners of kennels and catteries say theyre struggling to survive because of Travel Restrictions imposed during the pandemic. The government says it has provided support to help protectjobs, but fewer animals boarding has inevitably led to a drop in income, as liz copper reports. At this kennels and cattery in staffordshire, the pandemic is having a big effect. It has not been forced to close, but neither is it business as usual. The owners have furloughed some staff, and received a grant, but that help doesnt make up for the lost income over the last year. We have lots of returning customers that will need pet care when they start travelling again, so we need to be able to survive. We have had a bounceback loan, but we shouldnt have to be in debt to survive this. It is a similar picture at this kennels in bromsgrove, with empty space where dogs would normally be staying. Here they also home rescue dogs. They say the outlook is bleak. We are absolutely at rock bottom. We have not had boarders since last february. The pandemic has just floored us. The building is floored, the business is floored and the bank account is floored. The government has provided support for small businesses. In a statement the treasury said. Despite that support, an organisation representing the pet industry still has concerns. Obviously the pandemic has been going on for a year and that money doesnt last forever. And there is no real prospect i suppose there is now the glimmer of hope to summer that things are going to get a little bit back to normal, but i suppose the problem is will these businesses survive until then . And thats the big concern that we have as a trade association. With no certainty over when Travel Restrictions will be lifted, this industry, in common with many others, will be counting the cost of covid for months to come. Liz copper reporting there. Freezing temperatures in the netherlands have caused canals to ice over, meaning some people are hoping the worlds biggest Skating Competition on natural ice might go ahead. Ice skating is a National Passion in the country and with conditions ideal now, fans are still campaigning for the race in the Northern Province of friesland to go ahead. But coronavirus Restrictions Mean its a politically charged issue. The dutch Prime Minister mark rutte says social distancing wont allow the race to take place. I was hoping we would show you some other pretty pictures there because the pretty pictures we have had our snow and ice in the uk might not be around for much longer, i dont think. Now its time for a look at the weather, with chris fawkes. Hello there. Our weather is going to turn increasingly mild over the next 24 hours, but as it does so, weve got some rain and some strong winds to come from this area of low pressure. This hook of cloud just going past Northern Ireland will bring some particularly strong winds, i think, to the hebrides in western scotland, where gusts of wind will probably reach about 75 mph, so there is the risk of some disruption here from the strong winds. Outbreaks of rain and fairly windy conditions, though, with us for most areas of the uk as we go into this evening, and indeed overnight, those winds will very slowly ease down. There will be showers later in the night for Northern Ireland and western scotland. And its going to be a mild night ive not said that for many weeks 4 10 celsius, Something Like that. Monday starts off on a rather damp note across east anglia and south east england, with some rain slow to clear away. Showers follow to Northern Ireland, north of both england and wales, and, across scotland. There will probably be quite a bit of cloud around, maybe a few mist and hill fog patches, but it will be mild. Hello, this is bbc news. The headlines. More than 15 Million People in the uk have now had at least one dose of a covid 19 vaccine. Borisjohnson has called it a significant milestone but says theres still a Long Way To Go. The Prime Minister is under pressure from some of his own mps to end covid restrictions by the end of april. Government ministers, however, urge caution. We wont be able to give certainty unless it is based on the evidence that we have got that the vaccine is doing itsjob. So far, the prognosis is pretty good, but we have to keep monitoring it as the roll out proceeds. President trump suggests he could make a political comeback after hes cleared of his second Impeachment Trial. Democrats are furious with the verdict. Despite the results of the vote on Donald Trumps conviction in the court of impeachment, he deserves to be convicted, and i believe he will be convicted in the court of public opinion
