Well hear from the former Prime Minister matteo renzi, whos told me why he forced the current crisis. Politics means make choice. I decided to open that crisis, and now there is a government better than in the past. And which celebrity does he look like . The burnley manager tells us what we are really missing in this pandemic is a game of looky likey. Hello. Im Laura Trevelyan in new york. Christian fraser is in london. There was encouraging news for britains government today. First came a preliminary report that the astrazeneca vaccine does reduce transmission of the virus by two thirds. Until now, there had been no real data on that. And the very same study found that delivering a second dose after 12 weeks, rather than three, made the vaccine more effective. The report hasnt been Peer Reviewed but seems to vindicate the uk governments strategy. The other extraordinary news was that by following that strategy, the uk has now vaccinated 10 Million People. 15 of the population has been given a first coronavirus jab, which means the uk is bang on target to vaccinate all elderly and Vulnerable People by the middle of february. Heres the british Prime Minister, borisjohnson. We have today passed the milestone of 10 million vaccinations in the united kingdom, including almost 90 of those aged 75 and over in england and every eligible person in a care home. And with everyjab and every day, we have more evidence about the effectiveness of these vaccines. New research from Oxford University suggests the protection provided by the first dose of the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine kicks in after three weeks and lasts right the way through to the booster at three months. And Research Also shows that the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine seems likely to reduce transmission to others. The Prime Minister went on to say that while todays news was hugely positive, more data is required before considering any relaxation of the covid restrictions. Nonetheless, the uk government will take great satisfaction in those numbers. Per capita, israel still leads the way in vaccinating its citizens, but the uk and us are now making significant progress. Remember at least 70 of the population in a country has to be vaccinated before we can think about reaching herd immuninty. Herd immunity. In the us, the cases and hospitalisations continue to fall, though the head of the cdc said today the spread of the variants remains a cause for concern. Not Wearing Masks and participating in in person social gatherings have contributed to the variants spread. We must take prevention and intervention seriously. Now is not the time to let our guard down. Meanwhile, the scientists at astrazeneca and Oxford University have begun work on a new version of the jab, which will be trialled in the coming months to tackle the variants. They believe it could be made available by the autumn. Dr paul mckay is a Vaccine Research scientist at Imperial College london. He is working on adapting covid vaccines for new variants. Doctor, good to have you with us. The i start with that . Tell me about your work. The i start with that . Tell me about yourwork. How the i start with that . Tell me about your work. How are you identifying the variance you are trying to adapt these vaccines for . These vaccines for . Sure. These variants are these vaccines for . Sure. These variants are identified these vaccines for . Sure. These variants are identified by these vaccines for . Sure. These l variants are identified by Genome Sequencing and the uks at the Forefront Sequencing and the uks at the forefront of this technology, in the group is able to monitor and note down in the group is able to monitor and note down any mutant that arises, any variant note down any mutant that arises, any variant that is seen. There are other any variant that is seen. There are other countries across the world that are other countries across the world that are doing this, but we have a genomic that are doing this, but we have a Genomic Sequencing Facility that is second Genomic Sequencing Facility that is second to Genomic Sequencing Facility that is second to none. This Genomic Sequencing Facility that is second to none. Second to none. This is probably a very naive. Second to none. This is probably a very naive, ignorant second to none. This is probably a very naive, ignorant question, second to none. This is probably a very naive, ignorant question, but are you slightly behind the curve or can you predict how a virus might mutate . Can you develop a vaccine which might cover a variety of options . Which might cover a variety of o tions . ~ ,. ,. , , which might cover a variety of otions . ~ ,. ,. , ,. , options . Well, yeah, thats a very comic It In Options . Well, yeah, thats a very comic it in thing. Options . Well, yeah, thats a very comic it in thing. Viruses options . Rna viruses mutate complicated thing. Rna viruses will mutate complicated thing. Rna viruses will mutate all the time, it is whether viruses will mutate all the time, it is whether those things are significant, and we see their significant, and we see their significant if they are in the vaccine significant if they are in the Vaccine Target. The proteins on the inside Vaccine Target. The proteins on the inside of Vaccine Target. The proteins on the inside of the iris, they are not suggesting to us from the Vaccine Point suggesting to us from the Vaccine Point of suggesting to us from the Vaccine Point of view, and once we have identified point of view, and once we have identified the virus has changed, the Vaccine Target has changed, we can know the Vaccine Target has changed, we can know those down and see whether those can know those down and see whether those actuat can know those down and see whether those actual mutations are significant. They would need to be in a place significant. They would need to be in a place that kind of interferes with the in a place that kind of interferes with the immune response, with the antibodies with the immune response, with the antibodies that are generated by the vaccines antibodies that are generated by the vaccines. , ~ antibodies that are generated by the vaccines. , ~. , vaccines. Here in the us, we like to think we have vaccines. Here in the us, we like to think we have the vaccines. Here in the us, we like to think we have the most vaccines. Here in the us, we like to l think we have the most sophisticated Health Care System in the world, but our ability to carry out this kind of mapping and surveillance of the variants is way behind uks . Why do you think that is . You think that is . Gosh, well, i would not you think that is . Gosh, well, i would not want you think that is . Gosh, well, i would not want to you think that is . Gosh, well, i would not want to comment. You think that is . Gosh, well, i would not want to comment on american would not want to comment on American Health systems, but i would imagine American Health systems, but i would imagine that because it is a state by state system, it is not quite state by state system, it is not quite as state by state system, it is not quite as cohesive as the uk nhs and the programmes the uk has which monitor the programmes the uk has which Monitor Samples that come in from the nhs~ Monitor Samples that come in from the nhs. . ,. , Monitor Samples that come in from the nhs. ~. ,. , the nhs. And we are hearing today that the astrazeneca the nhs. And we are hearing today that the astrazeneca vaccine the nhs. And we are hearing today that the astrazeneca vaccine is that the astrazeneca vaccine is effective in slowing the transmission of the virus. What do you think that the other vaccines out there too would be effective and that this is pretty potentially exciting news . That this is pretty potentially exciting news . Oh, yes, on the transmission exciting news . Oh, yes, on the Transmission Point exciting news . Oh, yes, on the Transmission Point of exciting news . Oh, yes, on the Transmission Point of view, exciting news . Oh, yes, on the Transmission Point of view, it. Exciting news . Oh, yes, on the Transmission Point of view, it is only Transmission Point of view, it is only the Transmission Point of view, it is only the data from the reanalysis of the clinical only the data from the reanalysis of the Clinical Trial data from astrazeneca which is giving us this indication, astrazeneca which is giving us this indication, and the reason we know that, indication, and the reason we know that, from indication, and the reason we know that, from the oxford trial, is that they took that, from the oxford trial, is that they took pcr tests, swab test, each week from they took pcr tests, swab test, each week from a they took pcr tests, swab test, each week from a large number of their volunteers week from a large number of their volunteers and they were able to see that the volunteers and they were able to see that the incidence of a positive pcr test was that the incidence of a positive pcr test was significantly lower in the people test was significantly lower in the people who received the vaccine compared people who received the vaccine compared to the people who did not receive compared to the people who did not receive the compared to the people who did not receive the vaccine, and a figure that they receive the vaccine, and a figure that they put on that was 67 reduction, which is actually quite a bil reduction, which is actually quite a big reduction. This probably means that the big reduction. This probably means that the upper Respiratory Tract of those that the upper Respiratory Tract of those people has less virus contained within it and that is what the inference is, because of that, you would the inference is, because of that, you would have significantly less ability you would have significantly less ability to you would have significantly less ability to transmit the virus. There is ust ability to transmit the virus. There is just one ability to transmit the virus. There isjust one thing ability to transmit the virus. There isjust one thing that ability to transmit the virus. There isjust one thing that puzzled ability to transmit the virus. There isjust one thing that puzzled me | is just one thing that puzzled me about this research, and it is to be Peer Reviewed yet, and that is that it stops transmission within two thirds of people. That means there are another third transmitting it, so what about them . You are another third transmitting it, so what about them . Are another third transmitting it, so what about them . But this isntjust a rap on the knuckles or score settling. Its an Identity Crisis within the Republican Party itself, a tug of war between opposing forces. Yeah, thats right, significantly important, actually, for the Republican Party. Let mejust important, actually, for the Republican Party. Let me just show you the two women we are talking about. On your left, you have Marjorie Taylor greene, a freshman congresswoman whos an ardent fan of donald trump and his claim the election was stolen from him. Before she was elected, she supported the qanon conspiracy theory. And on the right, liz cheney, the third Ranking Member of her party, a staunch conservative, daughter of former Vice President dick cheney, republican royalty who dared to vote for Donald Trumps impeachment. Members of her own party want her demoted. So even if you dont know those two women, know this america is a two party system. Its often a zero sum game. If one party is fighting for its identity, the other has a huge advantage. Thats the idea, anyway. Lets bring in the bbc s Anthony Zurcher to discuss this. The man at the centre of all this, who has to really decide what the immediate future of the party is going to be, anthony, is the House Minority leader Kevin Mccarthy. It is going to define his legacy and it is going to define his legacy and it is going to define his legacy and it is going to define what the Party Looks Like going forward. Absolutely. I think you have the exact absolutely. I think you have the exact point here, is Kevin Mccarthy find himself in a bit of a bind, and find himself in a bit ofa bind, and is not find himself in a bit of a bind, and is notjust find himself in a bit of a bind, and is notjust a find himself in a bit of a bind, and is notjust a bind about Marjorie Taylor is notjust a bind about Marjorie Taylor greene, it is about the future Taylor Greene, it is about the future of Taylor Greene, it is about the future of the party in the future of trump future of the party in the future of trump is future of the party in the future of trump is him. If your member a few weeks trump is him. If your member a few weeks ago. Trump is him. If your member a few weeks ago, during the impeachment vote, weeks ago, during the impeachment vote, kevin weeks ago, during the impeachment vote, Kevin Mccarthy said donald trump vote, Kevin Mccarthy said donald trump was contributing to the riots at Capitol Trump was contributing to the riots at capitol hill on january six. He backed at capitol hill on january six. He backed away from that, seeming to be pressured backed away from that, seeming to be pressured from Donald Trumps supporters cannot be so openly critical supporters cannot be so openly critical. Now he is in a similar position critical. Now he is in a similar position in critical. Now he is in a similar position in a kind of a proxy fight with Marjorie Taylor greene where, on one with Marjorie Taylor greene where, on one hand, he wants to do not perhaps on one hand, he wants to do not perhaps what he views as an Extremist Portion of the republican partv Extremist Portion of the republican partv 0h Extremist Portion of the Republican Party. On the other hand, Marjorie Taylor party. On the other hand, Marjorie Taylor greene is where a lot of the repuhlican Taylor Greene is where a lot of the Republican Base is. She has talked about Republican Base is. She has talked about how Republican Base is. She has talked about how she has had Phone Conversation with donald trump, how she is conversation with donald trump, how she is going conversation with donald trump, how she is going to visit him at some point, she is going to visit him at some point, so she is going to visit him at some point, so Republican Party and mccarthy point, so Republican Party and mccarthy particularly is grappling with how to handle this without alienating the base but also a way to steer alienating the base but also a way to steer the party away from this kind of to steer the party away from this kind of conspiracy minded extremism. Heres kind of conspiracy minded extremism. Heres the kind of conspiracy minded extremism. Heres the competition in this story, though. Here is Marjorie Taylor greene, a conspiracy theorist, sitting on two congressional committees. One of them is education, ok, so if he decides that he leaves her on those committees, the democrat leader in the house steny hoyer has said they are to put a boat onto the floor removing herfrom are to put a boat onto the floor removing her from those committees and republicans would then have to vote on Marjorie Taylor greene, which they dont want to do, so either they have to preempt that vote tonight or what . fir either they have to preempt that vote tonight or what . Either they have to preempt that vote tonight or what . Or this will reach the floor vote tonight or what . Or this will reach the floor of vote tonight or what . Or this will reach the floor of the vote tonight or what . Or this will reach the floor of the house vote tonight or what . Or this will reach the floor of the house of i reach the floor of the House Of Representatives tomorrow. You are right, representatives tomorrow. You are right, republicans do not want to be on the right, republicans do not want to be on the record here voting against some on the record here voting against some sort on the record here voting against some sort of sanction on her, because some sort of sanction on her, because they could very well see this hung because they could very well see this hung around their next two years this hung around their next two years from this hung around their next two years from now, where they have to stand years from now, where they have to stand for years from now, where they have to stand for reelection, and when republic stand for reelection, and when republic and rightly believe they have a republic and rightly believe they have a very good chance at taking control have a very good chance at taking control of have a very good chance at taking control of the House Of Representatives back. You could already representatives back. You could already see the democrats trying to use this already see the democrats trying to use this for already see the democrats trying to use this for political advantage, try to use this for political advantage, try to hang this around the Republican Partys. Nancy pelosi, the speaker of the house, just a dumb the speaker of the house, just a dumb accent out a Press Release identifying Kevin Mccarthy as a moon identifying Kevin Mccarthy as a qanon represented different california just sent out a Press Release california just sent out a Press Release will california just sent out a Press Release will they see this putting republicans in real bind, although i will say republicans in real bind, although i will say there are some democrats concerned will say there are some democrats concerned about the president this sets, concerned about the president this sets, a concerned about the president this sets, a Majority Sectioning someone in the sets, a Majority Sectioning someone in the minority in the representative for something they said even representative for something they said even before they were elected in dealing said even before they were elected in dealing with committee assignments, which traditionally each assignments, which traditionally each Party Releases its own, with regard each Party Releases its own, with regard to each Party Releases its own, with regard to what persons is on which committee regard to what persons is on which committee regard to what persons is on which committee. What about the fate of liz cheney tonight . Committee. What about the fate of liz cheney tonight . She committee. What about the fate of liz cheney tonight . She is committee. What about the fate of liz cheney tonight . She is the liz cheney tonight . She is the number three in the House Republican leadership, she is the scion of republican loyalty mac royalty repellent and loyalty. Herfather was Dick Cheney Kebab and after party is furious with her but now her party is. Is her future party is furious with her but now her party is. Is herfuture hanging in the balance . Her party is. Is her future hanging in the balance . Her party is. Is her future hanging in the balance . Obviously she has taken a lot in the balance . Obviously she has taken a lot of in the balance . Obviously she has taken a lot of chrism in the balance . Obviously she has taken a lot of chrism from in the balance . Obviously she has taken a lot of chrism from within i taken a lot of chrism from within the Republican Party and theres a very real the Republican Party and theres a very real chance she could get stripped very real chance she could get stripped of her leadership position, even with stripped of her leadership position, even with senior republican leaders, particular even with senior republican leaders, particular mitch mcconnell, the minority particular mitch mcconnell, the minority leader in the senate, speaking minority leader in the senate, speaking out in her defence. This is the other speaking out in her defence. This is the other side of the coin on where the other side of the coin on where the republicans go from here, because the republicans go from here, because liz cheney was very outspoken in her criticism of donald trump, outspoken in her criticism of donald trump, it outspoken in her criticism of donald trump, it looks like she was beginning to lead a movement away from donald trump in the fallout from from donald trump in the fallout from the from donald trump in the fallout from the generous sixth insurrection and then from the generous sixth insurrection and then all from the generous sixth insurrection and then all of a sudden, she found herself and then all of a sudden, she found herself out and then all of a sudden, she found herself Out On A Limb by herself, only nine herself Out On A Limb by herself, only nine other republicans in the house only nine other republicans in the house voted alongside her to impeach, and now she is reaping the consulates impeach, and now she is reaping the consulates of taking that stand. And Ithink Consulates of taking that stand. And i think in consulates of taking that stand. And i think in the coming days, the next few days, i think in the coming days, the next few days, youre gonna get some very real, tangible indications of where the Republican Party is and where the Republican Party is and where the house the Republican Party is and where the house sees the base of its party is, and the house sees the base of its party is, and i the house sees the base of its party is, and i could be siding with marjorie is, and i could be siding with Marjorie Taylor greene or liz cheney Marjorie Taylor greene or liz cheney. It looks like the greene has the upper cheney. It looks like the greene has the upper side right now. It cheney. It looks like the greene has the upper side right now. The upper side right now. It feels like an inside the upper side right now. It feels like an inside story, the upper side right now. It feels like an inside story, but the upper side right now. It feels like an inside story, but it the upper side right now. It feels like an inside story, but it is like an inside story, but it is really crucial as to how the Republican Party is seen in the country, and the next few hours will determine that. Determine that. Anthony, thank you very much determine that. Anthony, thank you very much. Should determine that. Anthony, thank you very much. Should just determine that. Anthony, thank you very much. Should just mentioned l very much. Should just mentioned incidentally that the Capital Police officer brian sicknick, who you may recall was killed, he has been lying in honour in the rotunda on capitol hill. This wasjoe biden and the first lady last night, paying their respects. If you watch this, actually, you will see a moment where the president just shakes his head, presumably at the stupidity of it all. A Capital Police officer lying there dead after everything that has happened, still no one prosecuted for the assault on the policeman, the fbi investigated that. He has been taken away from the Capital Building today and he will be interred, laura, at the arlington cemetery. Will be interred, laura, at the arlington cemetery. Thats right, christian, lawmakers arlington cemetery. Thats right, christian, lawmakers paid arlington cemetery. Thats right, christian, lawmakers paid their l christian, lawmakers paid their respects to officer sicknick today, and then his body was taken to Arlington National cemetery, and hes only the fit civilian ever to be accorded that honour of being there only the fifth civilian. A very solemn day indeed. For those watching on bbc world news, well be right back. Lets get more on the downing street daily covid briefing. Our Health Editor hugh pym says the governments chief medical officer, chris whitty, remains cautious. He did say all of the key numbers were now on the downward slope that is new reported cases, Hospital Numbers and deaths and he said that we were past the peak of this recent surge, but he went on to express some caution. He said that vaccinations, the programme that we have been hearing about, would in due course bring down the death rate, but it isnt showing through yet. And he made a point that the current phase is to vaccinate those over the age of 70 by the middle of this month. That would help bring down deaths in due course. But Hospital Numbers wouldnt come down so fast because there were more people under 70 who did end up in hospital, even if they recovered and went on, so pressure on the nhs would continue. Hugh pym there. Yeah, optimistic news today but they are still cautious. Italys president has asked the former head of the European Central bank, mario draghi, to be Prime Minister. President Sergio Mattarella says italy needs a high profile government to tackle the covid i9 pandemic and the worst economic crisis in decades. Italy has been in a state of Politial Turmoil since january 13th, when matteo renzi pulled his party out of Prime Minister Giuseppe Contes governing coalition, in objection to his Spending Plans for eu coronavirus recovery funds. Political turmoil. Mr conte then put himself up for a vote of confidence before the countrys legislators, failing to secure an absolute majority in the senate and offering his resignation as Prime Minister as a result. In search of a replacement, italys president today asked mario draghi the former president of the European Central bank if hed form the next government. Earlier, i spoke to matteo renzi, the former italian Prime Minister. He defended his decision to pull out of the coalition and told me mr draghi is the right man for thejob. Mr renzi, why have you walked away from the coalition . I mr renzi, why have you walked away from the coalition . From the coalition . I think the best wa for from the coalition . I think the best way for ltaly from the coalition . I think the best way for italy was from the coalition . I think the best way for italy was a from the coalition . I think the best way for italy was a changed way for italy was a changed government, to ensure more quality and more government, to ensure more quality and more efficiency. And its social and more efficiency. And its social life and more efficiency. And its social life. I and more efficiency. And its social life. I think now, everything is clear. Social life. I think now, everything is clear, because a very simple message is clear, because a very simple message. Mario draghi is better than the order message. Mario draghi is better than the order Prime Ministers and he is better the order Prime Ministers and he is better than the order Prime Ministers and he is better than giuseppe conte, so the crisis better than giuseppe conte, so the crisis created a new government with a better crisis created a new government with a better Prime Ministers. So crisis created a new government with a better Prime Ministers. A better Prime Ministers. So you are ha a better Prime Ministers. So you are ha that a better Prime Ministers. So you are happy that he a better Prime Ministers. So you are happy that he is a better Prime Ministers. So you are happy that he is replacing a better Prime Ministers. So you are happy that he is replacing mr a better Prime Ministers. So you are happy that he is replacing mr conte| happy that he is replacing mr conte for stubs certainly he is a more very capable man. He led europe out of crisis at the ecb in 2012. Ijust wonder where you gave mr conte a list of demands he could not meet because you want to force this crisis. Just problem, personal problem, with mr conte. Just conte served as Prime Minister conte. Just conte served as Prime Minister first with a far right man and coalition, with matteo salvini, then with the far left, so no personal problem for some very simple no personal problem for some very simple message. I believe mario draghi simple message. I believe mario draghi saved europe seven years ago, eiht draghi saved europe seven years ago, eight years draghi saved europe seven years ago, eight years ago, now he is the best choice eight years ago, now he is the best choice to eight years ago, now he is the best choice to save italy. I choice to save italy. What has happened to matteo renzi . When you were the Prime Minister, you were the poster boy of Italian Politics, you are ambitious, you were an energetic reformer. And here you are now leading a much smaller party, breaking away yellow neck from the coalition, causing a crisis. I5 coalition, causing a crisis. Is there something in your story that defines the problem in Italian Politics . I defines the problem in italian olitics . ~ ,. Defines the problem in italian olitics . ~ ,. , politics . It may be very frank of Public Opinion debate. It may be very frank. All the media explained to m3, very frank. All the media explained to me. Its very frank. All the media explained to me. Its a very frank. All the media explained to me, its a mistake to open a crisis to me, its a mistake to open a crisis now. To me, its a mistake to open a crisis now, but if you look at the result, crisis now, but if you look at the result, you crisis now, but if you look at the result, you have to accept that we opened result, you have to accept that we opened the crisis in the middle of a pandemic opened the crisis in the middle of a pandemic because that was the only moment pandemic because that was the only moment to pandemic because that was the only moment to save the budget. If we did not open moment to save the budget. If we did not open that crisis, probably italy lost the not open that crisis, probably italy lost the most important occasion an opportunity to come back to be a Leader Opportunity to come back to be a leader in opportunity to come back to be a leader in europe and Around The World leader in europe and Around The World so leader in europe and Around The World so i leader in europe and Around The World. So i decided to risk my reputation, opening a crisis during a pandemic, because i think, as a leader. A pandemic, because i think, as a leader. That a pandemic, because i think, as a leader, that was the only occasion, that was leader, that was the only occasion, that was the only opportunity. And i know that was the only opportunity. In the next four or five days, all of us will be plunged into colder air. At the moment, it is scotland where things are particularly frigid and will be again on thursday, as there is more snow to come. There is a bit of a battle between some colder and milder air on friday, but you can see saturday and sunday, the colder air wins out and pushes all the way into the north of france. It stays into next week too. Overnight, more snow for scotland, perhaps some a little further south across the pennines as well. More rain in Northern Ireland and other parts of northern england. To the south, largely clear skies, a few showers close to the south coast, temperatures above freezing here. Much colder across scotland, a widespread frost, just the towns and cities that are a degree or so above freezing. The snow continues for scotland through the day on thursday. We will also see a little for the north pennines. Quite wet across much of northern england, again to the north of Northern Ireland. Some showers getting into Southern England. Still temperatures in double figures to the south, though, whereas to the north, it is cold. But through friday, on into saturday, the colder air will start to dig its way further south. That Weather Front is not going anywhere from scotland either, so the met office have issued an Amber Warning for friday and saturday for the snow continuing to pile up for the areas earmarked at the moment parts of central and Northern Scotland though that area might change, particularly through the weekend, as we see the risk moving further south. Friday, you can see the snow continuing to feed into scotland. It is rain further south, but as the colder air works south through saturday, snow is an increasing threat for northern england. By sunday, it may well have parts of wales, the midlands and even Southern England in its sights. You can really follow that dig down of cold air as we progress through the weekend, with the colder air into all parts of the uk and becoming established through the end of the weekend and on into the new week. It looks like we are going to see some disruption for england and wales through the weekend, and it is cold enough that any lying snow will tend to stick around, and so ice will be a problem as well. And even into next week, the story holds, but for this weekend, dojust bear in mind there is the risk of disruptive snow. Sending some celebrity birthday wishes to your friend at sea . Well let you know how Russell Crowe got involved in a very special birthday message. What an amazing feeling you will have when you can say you have claimed the globe. Happy birthday, pip. Joe biden has a lot on his Foreign Policy plate right now myanmar, iran, china. But then theres afghanistan too. Americas longest war, which began after the 9 11 attacks of 2001. Donald trump approved a deal with the taliban which commits the us to withdrawing the remaining 2500 american troops from afghanistan by first may. But is the taliban living up to its side of the deal. The question he is probably asking himself is what guarantees are there the troops wont have to return. One of americas most senior retired Generalsjoseph Dunford has warned of the dangers of withdrawing the troops too soon. He has written a report for congress on the threats that remain, which is currently being reviewed by the Biden Administration. Secunder kermani reports on those threats from islamabad. There are only two and a half thousand american Soldiers Left in afghanistan. The lowest number since the early days of the war. And what to do with them is one of the most pressing Foreign Policy challenges for president biden. Under an agreement signed by the Trump Administration and the taliban last year, all Foreign Forces will be withdrawn from the country by this may if the taliban fulfil promises not to allow alqaeda to operate on their territory. Now general dunford and many others say the insurgents are not yet complying with that. What is more, as we have been reporting, they have been continuing to launch fierce attacks on the Afghan Government whilst engaging in very slow moving peace talks, prompting fears the taliban will launch an attempted Military Takeover Of Afghanistan once Foreign Forces leave. President trump had always been pretty clear that he wants american soldiers back no matter what, but the new Biden Administration has said it is reviewing the terms of the us taliban agreement and this report by a group of authors convened by the United States institute of peace which will be submitted to congress is recommending trying to extend that may1 deadline to allow more time for progress in these negotiations between afghan officials and the taliban on some kind of power sharing arrangement. The problem with all of that is that any deviation from the timeline that has been laid out could prompt the taliban to further intensify the conflict and resume attacking international forces. Thats the one thing they havent been doing over the last year since signing that agreement with the United States. We will get a clearer idea ofjoe bidens strategy we think later this month around the time of a Mjaor Nato Summit Meeting but is looking increasingly possible like we may see a new policy emerge. Our chief International Correspondent lyse doucet joins us now from london. Nobody knows the story better than her. Nice to see you. Right in saying that in this deal that donald trump agreed with the taliban, there no explicit promise of a cease fire, no explicit promise of a cease fire, no express promise to end the violence . Violence . Theres always a discussion violence . Theres always a discussion about violence . Theres always a discussion about whether i violence . Theres always a discussion about whether these secret and axes, sometimes we are told are nine and we are told there are some butjust operational. Secret annexes. There was nothing in writing and even the spirit of it was that was not very clear. What you hearfrom some was that was not very clear. What you hear from some of the senior us diplomats and military people who are very much involved in negotiating the deal, they said it with a pure expectation, that there would be a reduction in violence. Not a cease fire but a reduction of violence. There was briefly a so called reduction in violence. Before the signing of the deal in february 2020. There had been some very limited cease fire Marquis Islamic Holidays but the taliban have been absolutely clear on this. They will not agree to a cease fire. For them it is one of their biggest Bargaining Chips until they make more progress in what they see is the path to an islamic government, new government in afghanistan. Many said that after the first day of his visit in kabul. So very worried. And he like you heard them talking about the report, general dunford, everybody is emphasising that the taliban and the Afghan Government but in particular the taliban have to stay at the Negotiating Table to find a way forward, because the alternative is a war that a country which is been a long living through war is not seen yet. He saw i saw the president on my last visit. His public posture is that he represents the republic of afghanistan, which includes the system for the president in elections. He believe you cannot overturn any institution of the republic because then you do give way to a taliban style islamic system. Now come his rivals and enemies, and they are circulating and there are many, they are saying what we need, the only way to get through this if to have an interim government with the current representatives from current ordering cobble along with the taliban. And there are many who are now scheming to make this happen. And the president has some supporters. They are holding their ground. This could possibly come to a showdown. Just when you think it couldnt get any worse, it does. Now they are real signs of splintering in kabul among the president s and the militias that are now supporting the militias that are now supporting the government. So this kind of slow unraveling if you like is another thing to worry about, which is why they are so many voices in saying please lets try to work with what we have and you heard from general dunford come with the best chance and peace for our very long time this was but the taliban are saying it is too late. You had 20 years. Now it is our time. It is too late. You had 20 years. Now it is our time. That showdown between the now it is our time. That showdown between the president now it is our time. Now, bezos is stepping down as Chief Executive, handing over to andy jassy, who has been running that Cloud Computing business. He is going out on a high, with amazon revealing a huge surge in sales and profits as the pandemic boosted demand for online shopping. But critics say the tech giant is too powerful and in the us regulators and politicians have the company in their sights. I think as attitudes are changing in washington and there will be more scrutiny on amazon as a corporation, its practices in the marketplace towards competitors, and the way it treats its workers. Better for someone else to be in the hot seat. Not thatjeff bezos cant be called to testify or engage with Policy Makers in other ways but he really does not like to serve that role. Dont Expectjeff Bezos to fade away. He will still be chairman, focusing on what new areas amazon can conquer. Thank you so much forjoining us Cinema Releases have been thin on the ground this past year but the awards season is officially under way, with some awards probably going to films we havent even seen. The Golden Globes announced their nominations today with the usual mix of suprises. The best surprise of all the news that three women were nominated in the Best Director Category first time that has ever happened. Regina king, chloe zhao, and Emerald Fennelljoin David Fincher and aaron sorkin in that category. David fincher s mank and the crown lead the way with six nominations each. The raised eyebrows is the Netflix Series emily in paris, which was slaughtered by the critics. It has been nominated for two awards including best tv musical or comedy. Lets cross to los angeles and speak to the bbc s sophie long. Splendid ladies. A most unusual, pretty unusual, these nominations . Very unusual. In all sorts of ways. First and foremost it is lovely to be out and about in the sunshine in hollywood and send a big signal this morning that the show must and has been going on. The Award Ceremony has not officially started in a couple of months too late, and these nominations were announced virtually for the first time. A huge diverse slate of nominees were announced virtually for the first time in history because the pandemic and an adverse late and i say, 42 jaw dropping numbers 42 nominations for netflix but all the films that have been released have been done so online so that its different this year as well. And as with the Golden Globess always come it is very know to be reliably and reliably print unpredictable if you like. And while there is a story about the successes, the biggest one of course the female directors, only five female directors have been nominated in the Best Director Category over the award 77 year history. So to have three announced this morning out of the five and the majority being women is a real step forward in the awards history. In the awards history. Sophie, althou h in the awards history. Sophie, although emily in the awards history. Sophie, although emily and in the awards history. Sophie, although emily and paris in the awards history. Sophie, although emily and paris gets| although emily and paris gets nominated, that bodice ripping our bridges and which is the most watched series ever i netflix, nothing for that one. The ten. Yes. The snubs is a big sort through. Bridgerton, a sean obrien series, much loved by people watching, that was snubbed as well as spike lees movie. Shonda arrived. His two children have been announced they will be Golden Globes ambassadors, which could be awkward. The normaljob is to the winners off the stage. I think you have to remember, here in hollywood, the Golden Globes are seen as a little bit of a slight abnormality, this is posted for by a group of 89 fairly obscure unknown foreign journalists, many of whom are even here at the moment because of the pandemic, people have been in their home countries, normally people who analyse and make these predictions ahead of nominations will have been at various Drinks Parties and Hollywood Foreign press association would have done a junkets to movie sets Around The World and of course none of that has happened this year so even more up unpredictable than it normally is. People pay a lot of attention to the Golden Globes because they like to think and shakes up the oscar race, very Opening Party really at the awards season. But in recent less that has been the case. Wintry weather is set to become increasingly disruptive across the uk in the next week to ten days. It will become colder for all, particularly by the weekend, and then theres a risk of significant snowfall shifting further south across the uk from saturday into sunday. Here we are currently, with the cold air largely sitting across scotland. Towards the end of the week, theres a little bit of a battle there between the cold air and some milder air from across europe, but by the time we get into the weekend and on into next week, the colder air sits all the way into the north of france. It becomes well established, and that means any Weather Systems around will produce snow. For thursday, snow is still largely confined to scotland, notjust to the higher ground, but a mixture of rain, sleet and snow, i think, through the central belt. Were looking at rain for Northern Ireland and across northern england. A cold day on thursday across scotland, in many areas temperatures not getting above freezing. See how much milder it is to the south in contrast, with temperatures in double figures, some showers of rain around here. This area of low pressure keeps on swirling on into friday, keeps on feeding that snow into scotland, and all the while dragging colder air further south across the uk. Now the snow for scotland is looking increasingly problematic for friday and saturday. A Weather Front essentially stalls here. Were anticipating it really piling up across parts of central and Northern Scotland, particularly across the highlands and grampians, but again, not exclusively so. It will be rain at sea level, but inland, there is a risk of snow, increasingly further south across scotland, too, as we go through friday into saturday. The met office has issued an Amber Warning for the threat of disruption here. Further south, still some showers in the mix, but overall, drier, brighter, and milder, temperatures still in high single figures. The big change starts to come from friday into saturday as we see the Colder Airjust beginning to advance its way further south. You can see something a little bit more wintry getting into the pennines through saturday. Northern scotland will clear, but it will still be cold enough for any lying snow to remain. I think largely rain pushing down further south into england and wales on saturday. Sunday is the day that we get the cold air right the way across the uk, and you can see what that coincides with. That frontal systems position is open to some change as our models get closer to the time. Very hard to pinpoint these features to exact accuracy this far ahead. But what we can see is that the entire uk will be in cold air, there will be a Weather System around, and where that materialises, there will be the significant risk of some Disruption Due to snow. And that system doesnt go anywhere in a great hurry, so that threat continues on into monday. At the moment it looks like the risk of snow will shift further northwards, but again, as i say, the detail will become clearer as we get closer to the time. And even further ahead, what can i show you . Well, we stay to the north of the jet stream, in the polar air, and thatjet sits to the south of the uk, and that means we dont really have any change in the set up. On into the following week, we stay with that threat of snow coming in on Easterly Winds for the majority of the uk, perhaps far southernmost counties in something a little bit milder. So for the next ten days, colder for all, the risk of some Disruption Due to snowfall, and also, for some, flooding, where weve had so much rain of late and we start to see some of that snow beginning to melt. Please do stay tuned. Tonight at 10 00pm, a major milestone more than 10 Million People in the uk have now received at least one vaccination for coronavirus. The hope is to avoid yet another lockdown by protecting the most vulnerable groups, with 15 Million People vaccinated by mid february. But Infection Levels are still Alarmingly High according to ministers, and the number of deaths will reflect that. The level of infection is still forbiddingly high, for us to imagine the relaxation of current guidelines. Well also have details of a new vaccine developed by astrazeneca and Oxford University, due for release in autumn. Also tonight. In portugal, hospitals are struggling, and in recent days theyve seen some of the worlds highest rates of new infections
