The cost of covid for children a report suggests they stand to lose an average of £40,000 each in Lifetime Earnings becaue most are not in school. And coming up this hour, well speak to Nicholas Hewlett, a head teacher in south london who is coming out as gay during an Online Assembly this morning. Theres been International Condemnation of the armed forces in myanmar after they seized power and detained civilian politicians, including Aung San Suu Kyi the woman known Around The World for decades as the face of the struggle for democracy in the country and who has, since elections in 2015, been widely recognised as its unofficial leader. Myanmar, also known as burma, was ruled by the military until democratic reforms began in 2011. In novembers election, Aung San Suu Kyis party, the National League for democracy, won enough seats to form a government, although she is banned from becoming president as her children are foreign nationals. But the military said a State Of Emergency has been declared for one year and it was handing power to its Commander In Chief because of election fraud. Soldiers are on the streets of the countrys capital, nay pyi taw, and its main city, yangon. So who is Aung San Suu Kyi . Shes the daughter of general aung san, who helped negotiate the countrys independence from British Colonial rule in 19118 before he was assassinated. She spent nearly 15 years in detention between 1989 and 2010 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, while still under house arrest. More recently, she has received criticism for not doing more to stop the rape, murder and possible genocide of Rohingya Muslims who fled from myanmar to bangladesh in 2017. But she is still very popular amongst most buddhists in the country, who make up the majority of citizens. Tom andrews, whos the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in myanmar, called the situation an outrageous assault on democracy. Were talking about Overturning A Constitution by the generals that the general themselves wrote, that they said just yesterday that they would abide by. So this is notjust an assault, an attack on an individual, on a political leader, a political party. This is an assault on democracy itself, on the people of myanmar, on their hopes and aspirations. And the people of myanmar need to know that the world is watching and the world is with them. Theres absolutely no justification for this whatsoever. The International Community cannot afford to stand idly by while this outrage occurs before our very eyes. The Prime Minister also reacted to the news on twitter. Lets speak to our special correspondent fergal keane. Why do you think this has happened . I think its happened because the military essentially panicked. Aung san suu kyis party, the National League for democracy, had an overwhelming victory in general elections last november. They had been coexisting in a Power Sharing Agreement with the military, but the military has control over key ministries, and of course security in the country. I think when they saw how well her party did and how badly their own surrogate did, a tiny share of the vote, they began to worry and thought that actual genuine democracy was something that Aung San Suu Kyi might now push for. And i decided to put her back, you know, into detention and to arrest her Senior Leaders and put troops on the streets to deter people from protesting. The streets to deter people from rotestin. ~. , the streets to deter people from protesting the streets to deter people from rotestin. ~. ,. ,. ,. , protesting. What does it mean for the country. I mean, this has been tried again and again by the military, i least . I mean, this has been tried | again and again by the military, for most of the last 15 years or so, the country has been ruled by some form of military dictatorship. That hasnt worked, it has led to the isolation of myanmar, it led to the creation of an International Icon in the form of angst and sushi. The change in her status may also play a part in this. Any form of Aung San Suu Kyi. She is no longer seen as a Rallying Point internationally for values ofjustice and human rights, principally because, of course, herfailure to rights, principally because, of course, her failure to deal with and to condemn the atrocities committed against the Muslim Rohingya people. She went to the International Criminal court to defend the military there, but the ministry believes that she has Less International support, will be less able to galvanise people Around The World to come out and impose strict isolation and sanctions on myanmar. I think that is a mistake, i think the united states, european union, countries like that, will make an effort to isolate the generals. The key players here, is not in the white house or Downing Street, it is beijing, china, and the chinese, who are neighbours, do not seem to have any intention of isolating the generals, certainly not now. So the aenerals generals, certainly not now. So the generals are generals, certainly not now. So the generals are panicking generals, certainly not now. So the generals are panicking about generals, certainly not now. So the generals are panicking about the i generals are panicking about the prospect of full democracy being implemented . Prospect of full democracy being imlemented . ~. , implemented . Nats correct, because i often think, implemented . Nats correct, because i often think. And implemented . Nats correct, because i often think, and i implemented . Nats correct, because i often think, and i might implemented . Nats correct, because i often think, and i might have implemented . Nats correct, because i often think, and i might have been often think, and i might have been guilty of this myself, back in 2015 there was a euphoric general election, and Aung San Suu Kyi was banned from being president , as you rightly say, because her children were not born in myanmar, but she was the de facto leader of the country. But the more you looked into that, the more you saw how hollow it was. It wasnt anything like real democracy, the military still held the key ministries and had the ruthlessness, so it was a kind of false democracy. It looked good on the outside, it allowed the country to open up to international investment, tourists flooding in, all of that has changed now, and we are back to a very grim situation, one that i first encountered in the major 19905 when Aung San Suu Kyi was First Release from house arrest. Fergal keane, thank you. Messages of support have flooded in for captain sir tom moore, who is in hospital with coronavirus. The 100 year old Second World War veteran, who raised tens of millions of pounds for the nhs during the first lockdown, was admitted yesterday because he needed help with his breathing. He is not in intensive care. John maguire reports. It all started as his way of thanking the nhs for looking after him following a fall. Now captain sir tom moore the record breaking fundraiser is under its care once again. Hes being treated for pneumonia and covid 19 at Bedford Hospital. In a Statement Released yesterday afternoon by one of his daughters, hannah said he was being treated at home but was taken to hospital when he needed additional help with his breathing. Hes on a ward and not in intensive care. She described the medical care hes received over the past few weeks a5 remarkable and goes on to say, we know that the wonderful staff at Bedford Hospital will do all they can to make him comfortable and hopefully return home as soon as possible. This year, of course. We last spoke to him just before christmas, and he was his usual optimistic self. But things will get better, and next year will be all right. Captain toms endeavors walking 100 lengths of his back garden before his 100th birthday last april saw him raise almost £40 million for Nhs Charities. He inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, and his story was told Around The World. Now, once again, people are lining up to wish him well. The Prime Minister, borisjohnson, tweeted. The labour leader, keir starmer, wrote. When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high. And the singer michael ball whose duet with captain tom helped him to break yet another record as they made it to number one said. He is a huge cricket fan, and the former england captain, Michael Vaughan, sent this message. Sir captain tom, over the last ten months, youve been our inspiration. Youve been the nations heartbeat. Were all Thinking Of You get well soon. Thank you, captain tom, from the nhs and in passing on their best wishes, the Nhs Charities he helped reminds us of the difference hes made. We owe him so much for inspiring people to support Nhs Charities. The funds that he raised are making such a difference right now to nhs staff, volunteers and patients. Our thoughts are with him and his family at this time, and we wish you a speedy recovery, captain tom as the pandemic led to repeated lockdowns, captain tom has always offered messages of hope and positivity reminding us all to walk, to talk, and to look after each other. Its now time for us to return the favour and to look forward to seeing that smile once again. John maguire, bbc news, bedford. Well, we can speak now tojohn maguire, whos outside Bedford Hospital for us now. What is the latest from there . A bit earl , what is the latest from there . A bit early. Really. What is the latest from there . A bit early. Really. For what is the latest from there . A bit early, really, for any what is the latest from there . 3 it early, really, for any updates on his condition of a night, we hope we spent a restful night here, you heard in the report that he was brought in yesterday afternoon. It sounds like he has been ill for a couple of weeks now, but that positive test for covid 19 came last week, and clearly there was an issue with his breathing yesterday which meant that he was brought here to the hospital. Interesting to hear those comments from well wishers, the Prime Minister, the leader of the Prime Minister, the leader of the opposition, and from Michael Vaughan as well, talking about him being an inspiration. Of course, he has given us so much inspiration and optimism, so much positivity, really, and it is important to try and now feed all that back to him. We will see a huge response, because his story captured so many peoples imagination, rightaround his story captured so many peoples imagination, right Around The World. I remember seeing his Birthday Cards that arrived for his 100th birthday last year, an absolute ocean of cards arrived, and we are starting to see people expressing their good wishes. Spending time outside the hospital this morning, people have been asking whether we had any updates, giving us the captain tom thumbs up, saying they hope he gets much better very soon. Just to say that he was due to have his Coronavirus Vaccine but was not able to receive it, because of his pneumonia. If he was here, im sure he would say that tomorrow will be a better day than today, his famous catchphrase. Well, lets hope that even today is a better day for captain sir tom than yesterday was and that he gets well very soon. The nhs says that every elderly care home resident in england has now been offered the Coronavirus Vaccine. The Prime Minister has described it as a crucial milestone. It comes as the uk hit a record daily total of vaccinations over the weekend. Aru na iyengar reports. Across the uk residents of care homes are rolling up their sleeves for the covid vaccine, and this is what it means. The day the vaccine was administered was such a positive moment. We feel a sense of relief, i think, that you can see something positive coming, and the residents were amazing, and there was a real air of great atmosphere. The Prime Minister said it marked a crucial milestone in the race to protect the most vulnerable and that the roll out will only accelerate from here. The head of the nhs, simon stevens, also paid tribute to the work of gps, Community Nurses and care home workers. The government says a few homes have had visits deferred due to local outbreaks of the virus and promises to get these done as soon as it is safe to do so. Some residents also may have been missed because they were suffering from covid. Ministers are growing increasingly confident of hitting the target of vaccinating the 15 million most Vulnerable People by mid february after a record high ofjabs on saturday, reaching nearly 600,000. Nearly nine million first doses have now been administered and nearly nine out of ten people aged 80 and above and over three quarters of people aged 75 and over have now had their firstjab. But the charity alzheimers uk says it is concerned about the level of staff vaccinations amid reports that some workers have declined jabs. Its also calling for the government to speed up the roll out of the second dose to allow homes to resume meaningful visits. In wales, around three quarters of staff and care home residents have received the vaccine. All homes in Northern Ireland have now been visited. And the Scottish Government said it expected to complete the first stage of its roll out, including care homes, by the end of this week. Aruna iyengar, bbc news. 0ur chief Political Correspondent adam fleming is in westminster. I have an e mailfrom a viewer i have an e mail from a viewer who says this announcement about all care home residents being vaccinated is incorrect, my 94 year old mum in surrey has not as yet been vaccinated at least once. The crucial thing is the government is saying all these residents have been offered a vaccine. Offered a vaccine. Yes, you are riaht offered a vaccine. Yes, you are ri. Ht to offered a vaccine. Yes, you are right to point offered a vaccine. Yes, you are right to point out offered a vaccine. Yes, you are right to point out that offered a vaccine. Yes, you are right to point out that the offered a vaccine. Yes, you are i right to point out that the pledges to offer people the vaccine, so that is to say to them, you want it and it be available to them. So some people might turn it down, there might also be logistical problems that mean it is not able to be delivered at a particular care home at that exact point, and also some care homes are closed off because there are local outbreaks and it is not safe for vaccination teams to go in, so it is not a Blanket Announcement that everyone who wants announcement that everyone who wants a vaccine has got one. The government is being open about that in a statement. The other big question, of course, does it make a difference to people doing visits to see their loved ones . Helen whately, the care minister, doing interviews this morning, sounded very cautious about that. And we are working on right now what can we do in order to be allow some more normal visiting, to be able to allow indoor visiting to start again, how can we use testing, to use that, you know, what confidence can we have as Community Rates should come down further in the wider community, which is what poses the biggest risk to care homes. Ill absolutely say were looking at it. Just cos. Cos i knowjust how important it is, actually, to the health and to the physical and Mental Health of those living in care homes and their families to be able to. To have contact. And as we were hearing, the other issue rate at which staff are being vaccinated, which seems to be going more slowly than the residents. The governments other target is to have the top four most vulnerable groups in the Vaccination List are getting their injections by the middle of february, that is 15 million people, and if you look at the rate of vaccination at the moment, it is probably going to have to increase if the government is going to hit that second target, and officials admit it is going to be pretty tight. In other vaccine use, the government has announced it is ordering a0 million extra doses from the french firm to take the total up to 100 million doses. Crucially, they will arrive between 2022 and 2025, another sign that the government is preparing for people to have multiple Coronavirus Vaccines over a number of years. Thank you very much, adam, thank you. Let us know how you are affected, by the way, if you have a relative in a care home, if the first dose has been given, when have you been told you are able to visit . I have an e mailfrom you been told you are able to visit . I have an e mail from someone you been told you are able to visit . I have an e mailfrom someone in a care home, robin says, i am clinically vulnerable, i have ms, the 70 and eight year olds are vaccinated and are Walking Around with impunity, and we now have a confirmed case in our building. As i am 65, i have not yet been vaccinated and i am really worried about catching covid. Joyce says, regarding carers refusing to have the vaccine, surely a carer who refuses the vaccine is failing in their duty of care towards vulnerable patients and should not be able to work as a carer. Such a big issue, access to care homes and being able to visit your loved ones. I would be really interested to hear what your care homes have said to you about when you are able to visit if youre elderly relative has had at least the first jab. Let me if youre elderly relative has had at least the firstjab. Let me know, you can send an e mail or message me on twitter or instagram. The headlines on bbc news the military have taken over the running of mynamar illegally, Detaining Civilain leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Shes urged her supporters to protest against the coup. Messages of support have flooded in for captain sir tom moore, whos in hospital with coronavirus. All care homes residents in england have now been offered a vaccine according to the government its being hailed as an important milestone. A report today suggests the long Term Economic effects of covid 19 Will Hit Children The Hardest and has called for a National Education recovery plan. The Institute For Fiscal Studies estimates that many pupils, whove lost six months of normal schooling, could lose around £a0,000 in income over their lifetime. It says the loss of schooling is contributing to lower educational progress and skills, particularly for disadvantaged pupils. The government says its Investing Hundreds of millions of pounds to help students catch up and has got more than 800,000 laptops to children. Two goals from mo salah helped them to a 3 1victory at west ham and tottenham lost even more ground on the leaders. Adam wild rounds up a dramatic sunday in the Premier League. If this is the tightest title race in years, thisjust might be when the champions started looking like challengers again. A trip to west ham themselves eyeing the top spot was tough, but here was mo salah, and he makes things look simple. Oh, yes. Brilliant goal by mohamed salah. A great opening goal was followed by quite a outstanding second liverpool taking the ball from one end of the pitch to the other. Perfect precision Passing Salah quite sublime. Thats a brilliant, brilliant finish. Georginio wijnaldum added a third liverpool up to third. For those around them, a warning. Yes, we had a little blip where we didnt score, but we never lost focus. You know, you can. Thats football at times, you know, its not the first and itll probably not be the last time it happens but we need to keep going and keep the consistency and see where it takes us come the end of the season. Leicester city did have the chance to go second but against leeds, they were just second best. Patrick bamford with a superb goal put leeds ahead. Having scored that he then found space and opportunity for another but chose instead to offer Jack Harrison an empty net. A great team goal for leeds, a great team performance. At stamford bridge, Thomas Tuchel is still making his introductions. His first week as chelsea boss ending in a first win Marcos Alonso amongst the scorers against burnley. What a finish that is. And if spurs are to seriously challenge at the top, theyll need to offer far more than they did against brighton leandro trossards goal giving them their first home league win of the season. The Online Fashion retailer asos has confirmed its purchase of the topshop, topman and miss Selfridge Brands from the collapsed Arcadia Group. In a £295 million deal with administrators, asos is acquiring the stock and the brands but not their retail stores. Lets talk to our Business Reporter Vivienne Nunis they wont buy the stores, that will put around 2,500 jobs at risk. Around 300 back upjobs, such put around 2,500 jobs at risk. Around 300 back up jobs, such as buyers and designers, they were be transferred, but for the thousands in retail outlets, the future looks uncertain. It is a lot of young people and women that take up those roles and those groups have been hit during the pandemic in terms ofjob losses. Uncertainty also in terms of the pension fund. We understand there around a £350 million in the Arcadia Group pension fund. There is pressure on the former owner of the group, sir philip green to plug that hole. He is worth around £930 million. We will will have to wait and see. Boo hoo is in talks to take over the remainder of group. That is Dorothy Perkins and burton. Boo hoo just bought debenhams. Again they bought the brand and web site and not the stores. We are seeing perhaps you could say the final chapter in the transformation of the Power Struggle in British Fashion retail. Debenhams and topshop were stalwarts of the industry and now asos and boo hoo are picking up these prince andrews. It is good news that the brands are continuing in some form, but it does look as though we will see fewer people employed in retail if these kind of moves continue. The labour party is calling for a National Task force to be set up to tackle a crisis over flammable cladding. Mp5 will debate the issue in parliament today. 72 people died in the Grenfell Tower fire injune 2017, but an estimated 700,000 people are still living in homes with flammable cladding, as sarah corker reports. A bombshell has just been dropped on us with this cladding. Caught up in britains building safety crisis. These sums of money are absolutely eye watering, and something that we could never afford. My career, and my home. This tower block in south london is having its cladding removed paid for by government funding. But across britain, an estimated 700,000 people are still living in homes wrapped in dangerous materials, now facing huge repair bills. Labour says the government needs to get a grip on cladding problems, which are pushing people towards bankruptcy. Flat owners like giles in manchester say being trapped in an unsafe home is taking its toll. For the last two or three years, a lot of our lives have been completely ruined. We remain in uncertainty. Were Living In Fear and limbo. All weve been told so far is the government wants us to pay sums running into the tens of thousands of pounds simply to make our homes safe. Its all got even worse over the last year because were literally trapped in our homes for 23 hours a day during the pandemic. We almost feel safer outside than inside our home. Mp5 will debate the issue in parliament later. Labour are calling for a deadline of 2022 for buildings to be made safe, and a system to prioritise repairs based on fire risk. The government has set aside £1. 6 billion to remove cladding and says it is making good progress. But campaigners estimate itll cost ten times that amount, given the scale of this crisis. As we go through the week, we are looking at unsettled conditions with rain and snow. A lot will be in Northern England and scotland. Most of it on the hills, but at times to lower levels. It is milderfor a time in the south, with temperatures back into double figures. We have this front coming in across Northern Ireland bringing rain and hill snow, but later we will see these fronts brings rain and snow tonight. Some cloud and dampness in the south. It should brighten up in wales and east anglia. Wintry showers in scotland and North East England and rain and hill snow across Northern Ireland and later this band will come up from the south west. Nine degrees in plymouth. Two or three our maximum in lerwick. Tonight a spell of snow across Northern England and scotland. And the next band brings rain and further snow across the north midlands, Northern England and scotland and some of this will be down to low levels with some across for example east anglia for a time. And tomorrow all of that advances north and east and later turning back to rain in Northern England and southern scotland. But we will have a clutch of showers moving across england and wales. Very mild at 14 degrees, but only four in aberdeen where we could have drifting snow in the highlands. Through the tuesday into wednesday, the fronts push north and then we have this next system coming in, that looks like it will bring heavy rain across the south. Obviously the ground here is already saturated and it will move across the south. It may get further north than this chart is suggesting. That is still open to debate.
