Yet another new vaccine has been shown to be effective in major trials in just 2a hours. The latest is the janssen vaccine. Its 66 effective overall and only needs a single dose. And crucially its 85 effective against severe disease. Last night novavax announced uk trials had shown its vaccine to be 89 effective. And crucially that vaccine protects against the new more contagious uk variant. If approved the uk has millions of doses of both vaccines on order though they wouldnt be available until later in the year. Our medical editor fergus walsh reports. Fergus is here its striking how well the uk is placed now with vaccines, compared to the rest of the world it is, and the vaccine task force, set up last year, must take a lot of the credit. A small group that moved fast to secure deals with seven different manufacturers. Five have come good already. If the last two, the gsk and valneva, conquered later this year, that will be another 120 million doses of vaccine. At some point later this year, the government is going to be giving away Covid Vaccine to the rest of the world. The pinch point is the next three to four months. As well as the scientists, we must pay credit to the thousands of medical volunteers, because without them we wouldnt know that any of these vaccines work. There are a lot of unknowns still, how long the protection lasts, will the new booster doses we needed to tweak the vaccines. Janssen said today it is going to a billion doses of its single shot vaccine this year, enough to protect a billion people. We are going to need all those doses if we are going to end this pandemic. Its exactly a year ago this weekend since the first two people with coronavirus were treated in hospital in the uk. The head of the nhs england, sir simon stevens, has marked the anniversary with a visit to the hospital in newcastle where he thanked nhs staff all over the country for a year of extraordinary work like no other. Since those first two patients were admitted, more than 320,000 people have been been treated with covid, with about one person admitted to Critical Care every 30 minutes. 0ur Health Editor hugh pym reports. A year ayearago, high a year ago, high drama, planes a yearago, high drama, planes bringing in the first britons from wuhan in china, nobody knew if they had coronavirus or not. Passengers were moved swiftly off the plane and taken on coaches to a hospital to quarantine. A short time before that, a foreign student called nhs 111 from a hotel room in york. Case numbers now seem to have peaked. The daily reported total covering those who have gone for tests is falling, but the office for National Statistics survey does random Community Testing and picks up random Community Testing and picks up those without symptoms. The 0ns survey suggests that case rates have levelled off but are still relatively high. In england last week, one in 55 the virus. In wales, it was one and 70, in scotland, one in 110, and it was one and 70, in scotland, one in110, and in it was one and 70, in scotland, one in 110, and in Northern Ireland, its not one in 50 had the virus. The highest of those was knowsley, followed by sandwell and slough that will have seen case rates for over the recent weeks. There is still immense pressure on the nhs. Staff are preparing for their shifts, facing the daily challenge of caring for very sick covid patients, some of whom wont survive. There are still more than 35,000 in uk hospitals. Hugh pym, bbc news. The latest government figures show there were 29,079 new Coronavirus Infections recorded in the latest 24 hour period, which means that on average the number of new cases reported per day in the last week is 26,987 thats almost 30 lower than this time last week. The number of people in hosptial is falling slowly with an average of 35,375 over the seven days to wednesday including suspected cases in wales. We dont have the latest daily death toll yet because of a Data Processing issue today. But the number of people being vaccinated has been published and its the highest figure this week. 13,985 people have had their first dose of one of the three approved covid 19 vaccines in the latest 2a hour period, meaning almost 7. 9 Million People in the uk have had theirfirstjab. 0ur Health Editor hugh pym is here have we turned a corner . Senior Health Officials believe that a call has been turned and that things are coming down, and if you look at those daily cases reported, down 30 week on week, Hospital Admissions are down about 14 . But officials go on to say its too soon to say how fast things will come down and move in the right direction from here. You have got these border surveys, one of which i was talking about earlier from the 0ns, for example, which dontjust look at people who have gone to a Testing Station for a test. Its a random survey of a broad section of the population, bringing in people who dont know theyve got the virus, they dont have symptoms, and those surveys show things are really only levelling off. They have come down a bit since early january but they are not really moving very quickly, and i think that is a potential issue of concern from here. 0fficials i think that is a potential issue of concern from here. Officials believe that, by the middle or end of february, the vaccine will have had an impact and have brought down numbers in hospitalfurtherfrom numbers in hospital further from here, numbers in hospitalfurtherfrom here, look down cases convincingly, but a lot will still depend from here on the data each day and each week. The Western Isles off the north west coast of scotland are being put under level four coronavirus restrictions from midnight tonight. Some Primary School children in wales could begin returning to school from the 22nd of february, after half term, if rates of coronavirus continue to fall. The First Minister, mark drakeford, said he hoped to take advantage of lower Transmission Rates in wales and get children Back To School as soon as possible. People waiting for urgent Cancer Surgery have had their operations cancelled at the last minute in some Health Trusts across the uk because hospitals are too busy coping with covid patients. Hospitals say theyre having to move nurses out of Operating Theatres on to covid wards. Some of the most urgent surgeries are being rescheduled, but doctors are warning that delaying Cancer Treatment will cost lives. Our correspondent emma vardy has this report. Im just praying this is all going to be over very soon. Its hard enough having cancer without having to have cancer in the middle of a plague. Throughout the pandemic, claire has been having treatment in scotland for breast cancer. Sometimes having to isolate in the bedroom at home, keeping away from her children to protect herself from the virus. After months of chemotherapy, Claire Finished Treatment and had just one more operation to go. Im not going to die. But as the january surge in coronavirus cases came claire was told her potentially life saving surgery had to be put on hold. You feel desperate because theres lots of casualties falling by the wayside and i worry all the time about the children, you know, will they have a mum next year . Claire, to us, is our world. Nhs scotland says it is now using private hospitals to help get the most urgent patients seen. Mcmillan cancer care estimates that more than half a million patients in the uk have had Cancer Treatment or care disrupted due to coronavirus. I got a phone call to tell me that all operations were cancelled. So it was a bit of a slap in the teeth. Vincent got the call on the day of his operation. In Northern Ireland two Health Trusts have cancelled all urgent Cancer Surgery since christmas. 275 red flag cases cancelled within a week. Ijust am so concerned because i can see such a Big Healthy Man just going downhill. Across the uk, there are lots of hospitals keeping surgery going. Some having set up special hubs to protect cancer care. Cancer charities have also flagged up a large decrease in the number of patients being screened and diagnosed, which later on could also lead to a significant loss of life. And there is warnings that if covid pressures continue more trusts like belfast may also have to push back urgent operations. It is a decision none of us would ever want to take and we held off as long as we possibly could, but you have to treat what is in front of you. Surgeons say they want to be in Operating Theatres, not seeing their patients waiting. A lot of Cancer Surgeries for belfast would have happened here at the City Hospital but this is now the Nightingale Facility for covid patients. The trust is trying to establish a new system for patients to be seen elsewhere, prioritising the most urgent cases. But the delays will affect peoples chances of survival. There will be a small but significant portion of people when they come to surgery it will be too late and the disease will have spread. And that, for us, is something that we never, ever, ever anticipated that we would be in our lifetime. These are some of the hidden victims of coronavirus. Also fighting for a chance of life. Vincent has now been told his operation is being rescheduled. For him, the hope is it is still in time. For others the wait goes on. Emma vardy, bbc news. There were long delays at Heathrowis Terminal 5 this afternoon. They are thought to have been caused by people rushing back to the uk to beat a travel ban on flights from the United Arab Emirates which came into force this lunchtime. This photo was taken by a passenger at a quarter to two. He was returining from dubai, and said there was little or no social distancing and no one to enforce it. Heathrow airport said there is signage to remind people to socially distance and that everyone arriving in the uk is required to have tested negative for coronavirus before arrival. Time for a look at the weather with stav danaos. 0ver over the last few days much of the country has seen very mild weather but into the weekend it is turning colder for much of us and we could see issues with sleet and snow because the uk will be the battleground of the air masses as we head through the week and colder air meeting my other airbus low pressure across southern areas and the boundary will bring outbreaks of rain and increasing sleet and snow as it engages the cold air. Strong winds around as well. Tonight the rain band will be moving into southern areas courtesy of the area of low pressure. Further north it will be called with clear spells and throw stand a bit of ice and to the south it will be very wet with rain picking up and becoming heavy at times and we will start to see snow developing over wales. Quite a Temperature Contrast as we start saturday. A few wintry showers, frost in the north, to the site is very well attended with increasing amounts of snow to all levels for wales, perhaps some snow for the midlands into the south east of england, wet snow down to lower levels. Drifting snow for wales as the winds will be strong. Cold but bright in the north. The last of the bright in the north. The last of the bright hair will be moving away from the far south west. The clip clears on saturday night, some ice around. A new area of low pressure will arrive into the west. A bit of a Repeat Performance after a dry start, rain, sleet and snow into Northern Ireland, wales, the midlands, southern england, mainly rain close to the coast but significant falls of snow for parts of wales, stay tuned to the forecast. A reminder of our top story
