pressure from some senior republicans to drop his attempts to overturn joe biden‘s victory. and — the perfect present for a russian patriot: what a board game on sale in moscow, says about the increasing importance of patriotism in the country. the head of the us covid—19 vaccine programme says the first americans to receive the vaccine could get it as soon as december 11th — less than 3 weeks from now. dr monsef slaoui says he hopes to be able to ship vaccines to immunisation sites, within 2a hours of regulatory approval — by the us food and drug administration. our washington correspondent, lebo diseko, has more. as the us battles to deal with coronavirus, at last, some welcomed news. the head of the government vaccine programme saying that immunisation could start in less than three weeks. the second the emergency authorisation is approved, the acip and the cdc will issue their recommendation for who will get the vaccines on a priority basis. that's very likely to be maybe health care workers, maybe first line workers, maybe individuals that are very high risk, elderly. infection rates are rising at alarming rates across the country. but immunisation efforts risk being undermined by lack of trust in the process. a recent poll showed less than 60% of americans would take up a covid—19 vaccine. that is up to 50% in september, but still less than the 70% needed to achieve herd immunity. there are a couple of things are going to the effectiveness of the vaccine programme. a highly efficacious vaccine and we have two of them that have a 95% efficacy. the other part of the equation is how many people get vaccinated. if you have a highly efficacious vaccine and only a relatively small a0—50% of the people get vaccinated, you're not going to get the herd immunity that you need. with days until thanksgiving, they're preparing for a holiday season unlike any other. turkey giveawayse happen every year, but with pandemicjob losses, the scale of those in need is just one thing that makes it very different. i came out to give out free turkeys, free groceries and especially during this pandemic, we need it. the other is the warning from the top health authority not to travel to spend time with friends and family. friday saw more than a million people travelling through america's airports. it's less then half the volume of this time last year. but still bound to raise alarm about the virus‘s spread. for donald trump, another day spent on the golf course. he still refuses to concede thatjoe biden is president—elect. and he's blocking the sharing of sensitive information, including on the vaccine. mr biden‘s team says it puts distribution of it in jeopardy because it is they, rather than donald trump's team, that will be responsible for any roll—out. earlier i spoke to dr michael mina who's assistant professor of epidemiology at harvard mediacl school. i asked him his thoughts on the us planning to roll out a covid—19 vaccine in the next couple of weeks. i think we should anticipate seeing, as i said, an immunisation roll—out, but how quickly that roll—out actually occurs i think is yet to be determined. we are expecting an authorisation for the pfizer vaccine, for example, in the next few weeks and then we will see some people begin to get vaccinated, but whether it's 20,000 people or 20 million people by the end of december is a big unknown at the moment. and what are some of the logistical challenges then? one of the greatest ones is certainly how these vaccines will be distributed in their cold chain. these vaccines need to be kept very, very cold, at —70 celsius, which is colder than many parts of antarctica in the winter. and so to do that requires a lot of logistical hurdles that are going to have to be overcome in the next few weeks in order to see a rapid roll—out of these really become feasible. do we know what kind of infrastructure, all the surrounding logistics that have to be in place, are we confident that they are in place? i think that they are getting in place now that the vaccine roll—out is becoming increasingly imminent, but i would imagine there is a lot of scrambling going on behind the scenes to figure out where the freezers will be, what the actual transportation of the vaccines will look like, and frankly, we don't yet know exactly who will be getting these vaccines. will it be the first line workers? will it be only healthcare people at the beginning? will it be healthcare plus elderly? i think there is still quite an ongoing discussion. so by your tone, your quite cautious tone, i'm assuming you're not thinking a huge roll—out and max vaccinations this year certainly? no and i think it's going to be, we always, certainly, that we always overshoot what we really think, what actually happens, and i would say that we have to be pretty cautious, we certainly can't let our guard down this year. and really, probably not until the springtime when we have a large, large number of people in the united states vaccinated. these vaccines have to go to places all across the globe, notjust one or two. cognisa nt of just how many vaccines can be produced and just how quickly. three prominent hong kong are in court charged with organising a protest leading to a siege of police headquarters in june 2019. joshua wong, ivan lam and agnes chow are members of hong kong's pro—democracy movement, which faltered since a new national security law gave the government sweeping powers to suppress the opposition. their charges relate to protests against a controversial extradition bill, when thousands of demonstrators surrounded the hong kong police building. the bill which would have allowed for criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland china was formally scrapped four months later. the three now face charges of organising an unauthorised assembly, with a maximum prison sentence of 5 years. joshua wong had this to say before he went into court. this case will draw the world's attention to the arbitrary power of the criminaljustice system whose impartiality is manipulated by beijing crackdown and the systematic violence in greater detail. to sum up, whatever happens today, i thank my family and colleagues for their unwavering support. for the safety and health of the 12 activists held in china, they are in my daily prayers. i also pray for agnes and ivan, for peace and wisdom. may god bless hong kong, and we will continue to fight for freedom and now is not the time for us to kowtow to beijing and to surrender. earlier i spoke to joseph cheng, a former professor at the city university of hong kong and a pro—democracy activist. he explained what the court case means for the pro—democracy movement in hong kong. this is a prominent case in the whole series of campaigns and prosecutions against the majority of eminent activists in the pro—democracy movement in the territory. these prosecutions have been used to exert pressure on the activists and to generate a deterrence effect. typically they start with arrests, searches of their offices and residences and then their passports will be confiscated, and sometimes they may be detained without bail and, of course, joshua's case has attracted a lot of attention but we have to bear in mind that even in the recent months, quite a number of legislators, counsellors, journalists, teachers and so on, have also been prosecuted. so this is seen as a way, as a campaign of suppression against the opposition, against the pro—democracy movement and it reflects a total lack of tolerance for political opposition in the territory. i also spoke to victor gao a chinese international relations expert who supports of beijing's approach in hong kong. i would hesitate to call these three people prone to proceed advocates. what they did over the past 12 months or so, the past several years contributed a lot to the anarchy and breaking up of rule of law in hong kong full many people in hong kong suffered. what they need is stability and respect for the rule of law and promotion of democracy through rule of law rather than launching illegal and unauthorised assemblies. this is not allowed in hong kong because it is bad for stability. president trump is beginning to face pressure from some senior republicans to drop his attempts to overturnjoe biden's victory in the us presidential election. the former newjersey governor and confidant of the president, chris christie, described the conduct of mr trump's legal team as a "national embarrassment". mr trump's former national security advisor, hr mcmaster, said mr trump's corrosive actions were sowing doubt among the electorate. a lawyer who appeared at a series of media events to argue for donald trump's claims of widespread voter fraud appears to have been sacked. sidney powell spoke at a news conference last week with trump lawyer rudy giuliani, claiming that electronic voting systems had switched millions of ballots to president—electjoe biden. well, the president himself first started tweeting allegations of fraud as far back as april — and has mentioned rigged elections or voter fraud more than 70 times since then. i've been speaking to kelly hyman, a political analyst and democratic strategist, to get her reaction. i would say that it is about time. us in the us, we believe in democracy and donald trump has every right to proceed in legal battle in the court, however there has been no evidence, no showing of any type of fraud, and trump has been tweeting about this for months, so in an abundance of caution, people have made sure, belt and suspenders, that the election was secure and the people voted and over 6 million people chosejoe biden over trump and now trump needs to move forward and unite this country and make sure that joe biden's team has the proper stuff to move this country forward and move forward with our allies. the problem with trying to unite the country is the millions of donald trump supporters who believe there was voter fraud. there is no evidence of that, there has been nothing substantiated to prove that allegation, that's a false narrative that trump has been saying for months, as you said, even before the election, so it is obvious the people chosejoe biden are now ready to move forward and unite this country, that's why peoplejoe biden, to unite us, and move this country forward and especially with our allies. do you think this is doing long—term damage to america's reputation, orjust the state of politics inside america? i hope not. as i said before they made sure that we live in a democracy, people's vote should count, everyone's voice should be heard and that what we believe, and that's what's great about the country, people got out and voted, so we can agree to disagree about it, but there has been no evidence and i'm hoping there will be no long—term damage for our country, or with our allies in regards to the litigation of donald trump and also with our democracy and election process. stay with us on bbc news, still to come: the perfect present for a russian patriot: what a board game on sale in moscow, says about the increasing importance of patriotism in the country. benazir bhutto has claimed victory in pakistan's general election and she's asked pakistan's president to name her as prime minister. jackson's been released on bail of $3 million after turning himself into police in santa barbara. it was the biggest demonstration so far of the fast—growing european anti—nuclear movement. the south african government has announced that it's opening the country's remaining whites—only beaches to people of all races. this will lead to a black majority government in this country and the destruction of the white civilisation. part of the centuries—old windsor castle, one of the queen's residences, has been consumed by fire for much of the day. 150 firemen have been battling the blaze, which has caused millions of pounds worth of damage. this is bbc world news, the latest headlines: the us says it hopes to approve — and start distributing a coronavirus vaccine in less than three weeks time. the prominent hong kong democracy activistjoshua wong says he will plead guilty to all charges — at the trial relating to last year's siege of the territory's police headquarters. us president—electjoe biden will announce the first names chosen for his cabinet on tuesday, and there's already speculation about who will be on the list. multiple news outlets are reporting that antony blinken, a veteran diplomat and longtime confidant of mr biden, is the likely pick for secretary of state. a short time ago, i spoke to one ofjoe biden's former chief speech writers, mathew littman, about the president elect‘s cabinet choices. so let mejust so let me just say that it will be tony and he is a great choice. he started as a speechwriter worked his way up. joe biden used to say that tony is the only person who knows more people around the world thanjoe more people around the world than joe himself. more people around the world thanjoe himself. tony is a very nice guy. they could not bea very nice guy. they could not be a bigger difference between mike pompeo and tony blinken. so this will signal a different approach for the united states in the world? absolutely. tony isa man in the world? absolutely. tony is a man of the world and speaks various languages and i must say he is just a really good guy and i am very happy that he is doing this and that joe biden picked him. and there has been much speculation now over the rest of the covenant that this will be a more diverse covenant than ever before. i think in the obama administration in the first four years, 30% of the jobs went to women, 35% in the second four years. biden seems that he will blow past that number. many of the key roles in this administration have already been given to women. his direct of legislative affairs, the director of intergovernmental relations, the woman who will become the un ambassador on tuesday. there are many roles going to women. kamala harris obviously the vice president so i think you will see a very diverse cabinet with many women in this administration. in this transition period that we are in at the moment, we're not a formal transition period, what sort of hindrance is that to president—electjoe biden? it is terrible. joe biden is the only person qualified enough to get through this because he has beenin get through this because he has been in government and around government for so long but it is very difficult. just on things like coronavirus, for example, the biden people don't know what the time people have been doing. they don't know how many masks we have, they don't know how the vaccine will be distributed. they are not sharing the information and it is ridiculous. the other thing that must happen is that the new administration, the roman —— president—elect has an administration to raise money to keep money people on staff. the government is supposed to kick in $6 million at a certain point. they are not doing that which means the biden team needs to raise that money so they are spending much of their time raising money that they should not have to raise to make the transition work. so it really has a deleterious effect. and, largely, could you doa effect. and, largely, could you do a little speculation on other names that you think are in the frame or other people you would like to see play a key role as part ofjoe biden's administration? it looks like sullivan will be the national security adviser and people around the world know jake sullivan because he was a hillary clinton person with a high level and directed the foreign policy and worked for hillary when she was secretary of state and has been an advisor to joe of state and has been an advisor tojoe biden. of state and has been an advisor to joe biden. he of state and has been an advisor tojoe biden. he will be the national security adviser and a person named thomas greenfield will be the —— she has been in government for the —— she has been in government forthe un. —— she has been in government for the un. those are two big ones right there. on tuesday you will also hear the treasury department and i believe they will announce his choice was secretary of treasury. i don't know who, there are many good options. so you will hear many of these on tuesday which seems exciting. we have had the worst administration that i could ever remember and people either incompetent or corrupt for the last few years and getting good people back into government and then you have to build up the agencies again. this is difficult because many people left or were kicked out of government under donald trump and now you have to get them backin and now you have to get them back in and working in the government. it is a big job. there are about 4000 jobs that need to be hired byjoe biden. pat quinn, whose personal battle with the disease als helped power the ice bucket challenge, has died aged 37. the als association credited him with popularising "the greatest social media campaign in history", which raised more than 200 million dollars for research into the illness. a galaxy of celebrities, high—profile personalities and entire sports teams took part in the challenge. i'm joined by our reporter paul hawkins. paul, so many people remember that challenge. it was huge. did you do it? i did but not in a particularly effective way. many people did it. this was backin many people did it. this was back in 2014 and president bush, donald trump, 0prah winfrey, david beckham, lady gaga and a host of celebrities, sports stars, great and good, they took part in the challenge whereby you dumped a bucket of ice cold water on your head and posted it on social media and challenged others to do the same 01’ challenged others to do the same or donate money to charity. the charity was als, was to raise money for als research, that being amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, degenerative brain disease. the ice bucket challenge was co—founded by patrick quinn who has passed away at the age of 37. he co—founded that with his friend peter who also passed away last year at the age of 34. in total, the ice bucket challenge raised $220 million for research into this brain disease. it is remarkable because i remember when it first went round the vast majority of people had not even heard of the condition. certainly did not know much about it or know the drastic need for research into it and i love how as it spread around the internet, around the world, the internet, around the world, the challenge got bigger and bigger each time. for him himself, we see him there, what a life and what an impact. from diagnosis, patients are expected to live on average another two or five years. patrick and his friend, the co—founder peter lived for seven and they filled themselves in years with an immense amount of energy and became a real inspiration for research into the disease. the als association have tweeted saying that the ice could challenge dramatically accelerated the fight against als with the expansion of care for people, research and greater investment by the government. pat will be missed but he will continue to inspire us but he will continue to inspire us until we have a world without als. so he spent the last seven years of his life raising an amazing amount of one money and increasing awareness for this disease. christmas is just round the corner. if you celebrate it — you might well be thinking about what presents to buy for your friends and family. 0ur moscow correspondent steve rosenberg has an idea for you. christmas is coming, and the big question, of course, is what to get the kids. well, i was in my local moscow supermarket yesterday, and in the toy section i spotted this. which says a lot, i think, about today's russia. it's a board game for children aged between five and ten, and it's called we are proud of our motherland. it's a very patriotic present. let me just read you a bit of the blurb. "pride in and love for the motherland is the foundation of self—esteem and personal identity, and patriotism is the highest form of social consciousness, channelling the power of the people into creativeness and development." not exactly snakes and ladders or happy families, is it? anyway, let's play. basically, you have to find the patriotic pictures that match patriotic poems on these cards. for example, "if our enemy comes at us with war, our army and navy will guard the door. planes, tanks, cannons, nuclear missile silos. enemies don't make us mad, we are the strongest in the world." nice. if you're lucky to have been dealt some of these images, you put them down. next poem. "russia is invincible. we will defend russia from any aggressor. the japanese have fought wars against us, so have the greeks, the khazars, the turks, the swedes, the lithuanians, the germans." we sent them all packing. 0ur enemies will never beat us, they never could and never will." you get the general idea. i think games like this reflect the growing emphasis the authorities here are placing on patriotic education in russia. 0k, time for one more card. russian sport. "our top athletes defend the country's honour. 0ur cross—country skiers and basketball players, runners and swimmers, wrestlers and bobsleigh teams, they're all brilliant. they have won lots of trophies and medals." hm, no mention of russia's 4—year ban from international sport for doping. oh, well, it's only a game. the world's deepest man—made diving pool has opened in the polish capital warsaw. it is 45 metres deep and includes a small rack for divers to explore —— small rack. and even some mock ruins. it has been open despite coronavirus restrictions because it is a diving instruction centre. it will also be used by the army and the fire brigade. that is all from me. you can reach me on twitter — i'm @lvaughanjones. hello there. high pressure means a largely dry but rather a chilly start to the new working week with a touch of frost in place. however, a frontal system up to the north—west will eventually change things for some as we head on up through monday. but the morning starts off rather on a chilly note. temperatures down around freezing even a touch below for some. not as cold in the far south with some extra cloud, not as cold in the far west either. in the cloud in the west will roll its way eastwards through the day introducing rain into northern england, wales, the south—west. especially around the coast and over the hills the sunshine through the afternoon across eastern counties of england and perhaps some parts of north—east scotland. windy, particularly towards the north—west. those are the average speeds. the gusts could touch 60 mph for the western isles. turning milder from the west. it will be a bit of a struggle with those temperatures in eastern areas after such a chilly start. but as we go through monday night into tuesday, that milder air will waft its way right across the british isles. temperatures by tuesday morning, double digits for most of us. still some rain across northern ireland and scotland with quite a lot of cloud elsewhere. as you go through tuesday with this wriggling frontal system, we will see further pulses of rain across northern ireland and scotland. quite a wet day in prospect actually, on tuesday across northern ireland, some heavy rain across western parts of scotland. for england and wales, drier conditions, some spells of sunshine, best of that towards the south and the east. and tuesday will be the mildest day of the week. highs of 11, 12 or 13 degrees. that is set to change because as we move out of tuesday and into wednesday, this wriggling frontal system will finally start to push eastwards. the rain along it will tend to weaken but behind that weather front, a cold front. we open the door to some much colder air which will start to push in from the north—west. the remnants of this front are likely to linger across south england. perhaps southern coastal counties more generally through the day on wednesday with some patchy rain. some showers in north—west scotland, sunshine in between but temperatures for many stuck in the single digits by this stage. and it stays rather cool by day and chilly by night as we head towards the end of the week. largely dry with some frost and fog in places. this is bbc news, the headlines: the head of the us coronavirus vaccine programme says he expects to begin an immunisation programme from 11 december. dr monsef slawi said he hopes two vaccines from pfizer and moderna could be ready to be shipped within 24 hours of final approval. the prominent hong kong pro—democracy activist joshua wong has announced he will plead guilty at the opening of a trial over his involvement in last year's siege of the territory's police headquarters. wong — who is on trial with two other activists — says he expects to be jailed. president trump is beginning to face pressure from some senior republicans to drop his attempts to overturnjoe biden's victory in the us presidential election. the former newjersey governor, chris christie, has described mr trump's legal team as a "national embarrassment."
