of patriotism in the country. three prominent hong kong are in court charged —— three prominent hong kong activists are in court charged with organising a protest which led to a siege of police headquarters injune last year. joshua wong, ivan lam and agnes chow are members of hong kong's pro—democracy movement, which has faltered since a new national security law gave the government sweeping powers to suppress the opposition. their charges relate to protests injune 2019 against a controversial extradition bill, when thousands of demonstrators surrounded the hong kong police building. the bill — which would have allowed for criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland china — was formally scrapped four months later. the three now face charges of organising an unauthorised assembly, with a maximum prison sentence of five years. joshua wong had this to say before he went into court. this case will draw the world's attention to the arbitrary power of the criminaljustice system whose impartiality is manipulated by beijing crackdown and the systematic violence in greater detail. to sum up, whatever happens today, i thank my family and colleagues for their unwavering support. for the safety and health of the 12 activists held in china, they are in my daily prayers. i also pray for agnes and ivan, for peace and wisdom. may god bless hong kong, and we will continue to fight for freedom and now is not the time for us to kowtow to beijing and to surrender. i'm joined now by a pro—beijing voice professor victor gao, a chinese international relations expert. thank you for coming on the programme. thank you for having me. so the three activists there are expecting to go to jail. is that something that you welcome? hong kong is a democracy and hong kong has deeply entrenched the rule of law tradition and i do hope they will get a free —— a fair trial. and whatever sentences that come out from the due process , that come out from the due process, let's respect those sentences. did youjust process, let's respect those sentences. did you just say that hong kong is a democracy? indeed. hong kong is a democracy based on deeply entrenched rule of law tradition. democracy can be improved, of course, but no—one should be allowed to promote democracy in hong kong through violence and anarchy, from sedition, for example. and i don't think freedom of speech, freedom of many other political rights would give anyone in hong kong any right to demand freedom or independence for hong kong. that is absolutely not allowed. people who live in democracies and exercise free speech will be watching on and c3 pro—democracy activists going to jail. what do you think that does for the reputation of hong kong and china? i would hesitate to call these three people prone to proceed advocates. what they did over the past 12 months or so, the past several years contributed a lot to the anarchy and breaking up of rule of law in hong kong full many people in hong kong suffered. what they need is stability and respect for the rule of law and promotion of democracy through rule of law rather than launching illegal and unauthorised assemblies. this is not allowed in hong kong because it is bad for stability. they were calling for universal suffrage for the legislative council and the chief executive. a basic democratic demand. first of all, if you look at democracy across the world, not every country or region has the same system. look at the united states. do you really think there is universal suffrage where everyone has an equal vote in the united states for the election of the us president? look at the legal paralysis right now and president trump refusing to concede. this is very complicated, the electoral couege complicated, the electoral college et cetera. it is not a simple asa college et cetera. it is not a simple as a universal one man one vote voting system in the united states, as many other countries now see. in hong kong it has a unique system and is pa rt it has a unique system and is part of the tradition and reality now. whether that system reality now. whether that syste m ca n reality now. whether that system can be improved, of course, you need to improve that in hong kong through rule of law and respecting one country to systems. that is the trend in hong kong. but protesters say that one country to systems is gone now with the security law. that system is over. no. i do security law. that system is over. no. ido not security law. that system is over. no. i do not think so. one country to systems is a legacy created by china and the united kingdom and all of us should be very proud of and one country to systems should remain the pillar upon which hong kong's stability and prosperity is further developed, at least up to 2047. why do you think the international community, the us, the uk, do not agree with you and view this as a threat to one country to systems?” don't think the united states oi’ don't think the united states or the don't think the united states orthe uk or don't think the united states or the uk or other countries really represent the international community. the international community. the international community. the international community is much larger than the several countries you mention. the international community should also include the 1.4 billion people here in china. and that is the reality. one country to systems is alive and kicking and should remain the vibrant political force in hong and should remain the vibrant politicalforce in hong kong up to 2047. let's respect the one country to systems. don't write it off. do not sabotage it in hong kong. let's abide by one country to systems. the united states and the united kingdom should respect the one country to systems in hong kong not interfere in the internal matters of hong kong. thank you very much for coming on. the head of the us covid—19 vaccine programme says the first americans to receive the vaccine could get it as soon as december 11th — less than three weeks from now. dr monsef slaoui says he hopes to be able to ship vaccines to immunisation sites, within 24 hours of regulatory approval. our washington correspondent, lebo diseko, has more. as the us battles to deal with coronavirus, at last, some welcomed news. the head of the government vaccine programme saying that immunisation could start in less than three weeks. the second the emergency authorisation is approved, the acip and the cdc will issue their recommendation for who will get the vaccines on a priority basis. that's very likely to be maybe health care workers, maybe first line workers, maybe individuals that are very high risk, elderly. infection rates are rising at alarming rates across the country. but immunisation efforts risk being undermined by lack of trust in the process. a recent poll showed less than 60% of americans would take up a covid—19 vaccine. that is up to 50% in september, but still less than the 70% needed to achieve herd immunity. there are a couple of things are going to the effectiveness of the vaccine programme. a highly efficacious vaccine and we have two of them that have a 95% efficacy. the other part of the equation is how many people get vaccinated. if you have a highly efficacious vaccine and only a relatively small 40—50% of the people get vaccinated, you're not going to get the herd immunity that you need. with days until thanksgiving, they're preparing for a holiday season unlike any other. turkey giveaways happen every year, but with pandemicjob losses, the scale of those in need is just one thing that makes it very different. i came out to give out free turkeys, free groceries and especially during this pandemic, we need it. the other is the warning from the top health authority not to travel to spend time with friends and family. friday saw more than a million people travelling through america's airports. it's less then half the volume of this time last year. but still bound to raise alarm about the virus's spread. for donald trump, another day spent on the golf course. he still refuses to concede thatjoe biden is president—elect. and he's blocking the sharing of sensitive information, including on the vaccine. mr biden‘s team says it puts distribution of it in jeopardy because it is they, rather than donald trump's team, that will be responsible for any roll—out. donald trump is beginning to face pressure from some senior republicans to drop his attempts to overturn joe biden‘s victory in the us presidential election. the former newjersey governor and confidant of the president, chris christie, described the conduct of mr trump's legal team as a "national embarrassment". mr trump's former national security advisor, hr mcmaster, said mr trump's corrosive actions were sowing doubt among the electorate. a lawyer who appeared at a series of media events to argue for president trump's claims of widespread voter fraud appears to have been sacked. sidney powell spoke at a news conference last week with trump lawyer rudy giuliani, claiming that electronic voting systems had switched millions of ballots to president—electjoe biden. well, the president himself first started tweeting allegations of fraud as far back as april — and has mentioned rigged elections or voter fraud more than 70 times since then. i've been speaking to kelly hyman, a political analyst and democratic strategist, to get her reaction. i would say that it is about time. us in the us, we believe in democracy and donald trump has every right to proceed in legal battle in the court, however there has been no evidence, no showing of any type of fraud, and trump has been tweeting about this for months, so in an abundance of caution, people have made sure, belt and suspenders, that the election was secure and the people voted and over 6 million people chose joe biden over trump and now trump needs to move forward and unite this country and make sure thatjoe biden‘s team is the proper stuff to move this country forward and move forward with our allies. the problem with trying to unite the country is the millions of donald trump supporters who believe there was voter fraud. there is no evidence of that, there has been nothing substantiated to prove that allegation, that's a false narrative that trump has been saying for months, as you said, even before the election, so it is obvious the people chosejoe biden are now ready to move forward and unite this country, that's why peoplejoe biden, to unite us, and move this country forward and especially with our allies. do you think this is doing long—term damage to america's reputation, orjust the state of politics inside america? i hope not. as i said before they made sure that we live in a democracy, people's vote should count, everyone's voice should be heard and that what we believe, and that's what's great about the country, people got out and voted, so we can agree to disagree about it, but there has been no evidence and i'm hoping there will be no long—term damage for our country, or with our allies in regards to the litigation of donald trump and also with our democracy and election process. stay with us on bbc news, still to come: the perfect present for a russian patriot. what a board game on sale in moscow, says about the increasing importance of patriotism in the country. president kennedy was shot down and died almost immediately. the murder ofjohn kennedy is a disaster for the whole free world. he caught the imagination of the world. the first of a new generation of leaders. margaret thatcher is resigning as leader of the conservative party and prime minister. before leaving number 10 to see the queen, she told her cabinet, "it's a funny old world." angela merkel is germany's first woman chancellor, easily securing the majority she needed. attempts to fly a hot air balloon had to be abandoned after a few minutes but nobody seemed to mind very much. as one local comic put it, "it's not hot air we need, it's hard cash." cuba has declared nine days of mourning following the death of fidel castro at the age of 90. castro developed close ties with the soviet union in the 1960s. it was an alliance that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war, with the cuban missile crisis. this is bbc news, the latest headlines: the prominent hong kong democracy activist, joshua wong says he will plead guilty to all charges — at the trial relating to last year's siege of the territory's police headquarters. the us says it hopes to approve and start distributing a coronavirus vaccine in less than three weeks time. us president—electjoe biden will announce the first names chosen for his cabinet on tuesday, and there's already speculation about who will be on the list. multiple news outlets are reporting that antony blinken, a veteran diplomat and longtime confidant of mr biden, is the likely pick for secretary of state. i'm joined now by mathew littman, formersenioradvisor to barack obama, and joe biden‘s former chief speechwriter. thank you so much for coming on the programme. shall be staffed with the pick for secretary of state, do you think it will be antony blinken? let me just say that it will be antony blinken, he isa that it will be antony blinken, he is a great choice, he started out as a speechwriter, and worked his way up, joe biden used to say about tony that he is the only person that knows more people around the world than joe biden knows more people around the world thanjoe biden does, he isa world thanjoe biden does, he is a very nice guy, he that cannot be a bigger difference between mike pompeo and antony blinken. this will signal a very different approach for the us and the world? absolutely, he isa us and the world? absolutely, he is a man of the world, speaks various languages and is a really good guy, and i am very happy that he is doing this and that joe very happy that he is doing this and thatjoe biden picked him. there has been a lot of speculation about moving onto the rest of the cabinet, that this will be a more diverse cabinet than ever before?” think in the obama administration, the first four yea rs, administration, the first four years, 30% of the jobs went to women, 35% in the second four yea rs, women, 35% in the second four years, joe biden seems like he will blow past that number, many of the key roles in this administration have ought to be given to women, his director of legislative affairs, director of intergovernmental relations, the woman who will become the un ambassador, there are many roles going to women, kamala harris obviously the vice president, so i think you will see a cabinet that is very diverse, many women in this administration. fascinating, and this transition period that we are in at the moment, of course we are not in the formal transition period, what kind of difference, what kind of hindrance is that to the president—elect? hindrance is that to the president-elect? it's terrible, joe biden is the only person who would be qualified enough to get through this because he has been in government and around government for so long, but it is very tough, just on things like coronavirus for example, the joe biden things like coronavirus for example, thejoe biden people don't know what the trouble people have been doing, they don't know how many masks we have, we don't know how the vaccine will be distributed, they are not sharing the information, it's ridiculous. the other thing that has to happen is the new administration, the president—elect is a transition tea m president—elect is a transition team that raises money so he can keep people on staff and get ready for the next administration. the government is supposed to kick in about $6 million at a certain point. they are not doing that, meeting the joe biden they are not doing that, meeting thejoe biden team has to raise that money, so they are spending their time raising money that they should not have to raise to make this transition work, so it really has a negative effect.” transition work, so it really has a negative effect. ijust wa nt to has a negative effect. ijust want to invite you, there is speculation, just on other names that you think are in the frame or other people you would like to see play key roles in pa rt like to see play key roles in part ofjoe biden‘s administration? it does look like jake sullivan will be the national security adviser, people around the world know him because he was a hillary clinton person, had a very high level role in herforeign policy, i believe he worked for hillary when she was secretary of state and he has been an advisor to joe of state and he has been an advisor tojoe biden, of state and he has been an advisor to joe biden, so of state and he has been an advisor tojoe biden, so he will be the national security adviser, in a person named linda thomas greenfield will be our un ambassador, she was in the government before that, she has been running the transition from the state department, we will also here on tuesday the treasury department, i believe they will announce his choice for secretary of treasury, i don't know who that will be, there are a lot of good options, so you will hear a bunch of these on tuesday, which seems very exciting, we had the worst administration i could ever remember, people who are either incompetent or corrupt for the last few years, and getting good people back into government, and then you have to build up these government agencies again, this is very difficult because a lot of people left or were kicked out of government under donald trump, now you have to get people back in, working in the government so it's a veryjob, they're all — there are about 4000 jobs that need to be hired byjoe biden. the ethiopian prime minister has demanded the surrender of opponent forces of the government prepares to attack the capital of the northern province, mel'eke. it has forced thousands people from their homes. some of the weapons ethiopia's military is using in its fight against regional troops in tigray. both sides have been talking of success, but with all communication to the region switched off, we just don't know the true picture on the ground. the military says it's seized several towns in northern tigray, and is now turning its attention to the regional capital, mek‘ele. it talks of surrounding the city with tanks and using artillery. there was a chilling message for the more than half a million people living there. translation: we want to send a message to the public in mek‘ele to save themselves from any artillery attacks and free themselves from the junta. after that, there will be no mercy. the tigrayan leadership has downplayed reports of gains by the ethiopian army. it says its troops will fight hard to stop these government soldiers advancing. more than 30,000 people have already fled the fighting and have crossed here into sudan. a country which has been going through its own political and economic troubles. in an effort to stop the crisis deepening, the african union has agreed to send three former presidents to mediate in ethiopia. but the government has made it clear it wants to fight on. it says the envoys will not be able to visit tigray and has ruled out talks with the tplf politicians who are in charge there. we don't negotiate with criminals. you know, when it comes to criminals, we are bringing them to justice, not to the negotiation table. this has been the declared, stated policy of the government. i think our african brothers and sisters would play the most significant role if they put pressure on the tplf to surrender. the government has some military advantages. they can fly armed drones out of a base in neighbouring eritrea that is run by the united arab emirates. the prime minister has not the first time given the tigrayan forces and their political leaders 72 hours to surrender. so far, they have shown no sign of giving up the fight. we don't know the full extent of the civilian suffering caused by this conflict, but if the threats are carried out, it might be about to get far worse. christmas is just round the corner. if you celebrate it — you might well be thinking about what presents to buy for your friends and family. our moscow correspondent steve rosenberg has an idea for you. christmas is coming, and the big question, of course, is what to get the kids. well, i was in my local moscow supermarket yesterday, and in the toy section i spotted this. which says a lot, i think, about today's russia. it's a board game for children aged between five and ten, and it's called we are proud of our motherland. it's a very patriotic present. let me just read you a bit of the blurb. "pride in and love for the motherland is the foundation of self—esteem and personal identity, and patriotism is the highest form of social consciousness, channelling the power of the people into creativeness and development." not exactly snakes and ladders or happy families, is it? anyway, let's play. basically, you have to find the patriotic pictures that match patriotic poems on these cards. for example, "if our enemy comes at us with war, our army and navy will guard the door. planes, tanks, cannons, nuclear missile silos. enemies don't make us mad, we are the strongest in the world." nice. if you're lucky to have been dealt some of these images, you put them down. next poem. "russia is invincible. we will defend russia from any aggressor. the japanese have fought wars against us, so have the greeks, the khazars, the turks, the swedes, the lithuanians, the germans." we sent them all packing. our enemies will never beat us, they never could and never will." you get the general idea. i think games like this reflect the growing emphasis the authorities here are placing on patriotic education in russia. ok, time for one more card. russian sport. "our top athletes defend the country's honour. our cross—country skiers and basketball players, runners and swimmers, wrestlers and bobsleigh teams, they're all brilliant. they have won lots of trophies and medals." hm, no mention of russia's 4—year ban from international sport for doping. oh, well, it's only a game. patrick queen, whose personal battle with the disease aos power the ice bucket challenged fundraising campaign has died at the age of 37. he was co—founder of the campaign that raised more than $220 million in medical research into the illness, which he was diagnosed with seven years ago. the association credits him with helping popularise the greater social media campaign in history. and that's it from me, plenty more on the website. this is bbc news. hello there. high pressure means a largely dry but rather a chilly start to the new working week with a touch of frost in place. however, a frontal system up to the north—west will eventually change things for some as we head on up through monday. but the morning starts off rather on a chilly note. temperatures down around freezing even a touch below for some. not as cold in the far south with some extra cloud, not as cold in the far west either. in the cloud in the west will roll its way eastwards through the day introducing rain into northern england, wales, the south—west. especially around the coast and over the hills the sunshine through the afternoon across eastern counties of england and perhaps some parts of north—east scotland. windy, particularly towards the north—west. those are the average speeds. the gusts could touch 60 mph for the western isles. turning milder from the west. it will be a bit of a struggle with those temperatures in eastern areas after such a chilly start. but as we go through monday night into tuesday, that milder air will waft its way right across the british isles. temperatures by tuesday morning, double digits for most of us. still some rain across northern ireland and scotland with quite a lot of cloud elsewhere. as you go through tuesday with this wriggling frontal system, we will see further pulses of rain across northern ireland and scotland. quite a wet day in prospect actually, on tuesday across northern ireland, some heavy rain across western parts of scotland. for england and wales, drier conditions, some spells of sunshine, best of that towards the south and the east. and tuesday will be the mildest day of the week. highs of 11, 12 or 13 degrees. that is set to change because as we move out of tuesday and into wednesday, this wriggling frontal system will finally start to push eastwards. the rain along it will tend to weaken but behind that weather front, a cold front. we open the door to some much colder air which will start to push in from the north—west. the remnants of this front are likely to linger across south england. perhaps southern coastal counties more generally through the day on wednesday with some patchy rain. some showers in north—west scotland, sunshine in between but temperatures for many stuck in the single digits by this stage. and it stays rather cool by day and chilly by night as we head towards the end of the week. largely dry with some frost and fog in places. you this is bbc news, the headlines: the prominent hong kong, pro—democracy activist, joshua wong has announced he will plead guilty at the opening of a trial over his involvement in last year's siege of the territory's police headquarters. wong who is on trial with two other activists says he expects to be jailed. the head of the us coronavirus vaccine programme says he expects to begin an immunisation programme from the eleventh of december. dr monsef sla—wee said he hopes two vaccines from pfizer and moderna could be ready to be shipped within 24 hours of final approval. donald trump is facing pressure from some senior republicans to drop attempts to overturn joe biden‘s victory in the presidential election. former newjersey governor chris christie has described mr trump's legal team as a "national embarrassment."
