in the past hour, three hong kong activists have gone into court for the start of their trial relating to the siege of the territory's police headquarters last year. joshua wong, ivan lam and agnes chow face charges of unlawful assembly — mr wong has said he intends to plead guilty. the charges relate to protests in june 2019 against a controversial extradition bill, when thousands of demonstrators surrounded the hong kong police building. the bill, which would have allowed for criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland china, was formally scrapped four months later. the three now face charges which carry a maximum prison sentence of five years. joshua wong had this to say before he went into court. this before he went into court. case will draw the world attention this case will draw the world's attention to the arbitrary power of the criminaljustice system which is manipulative by beijing and the system in greater detail. whatever happened today, i faced greater detail. whatever happened today, ifaced my family and colleagues for their own waverley that make unwavering support, for the safety. they a re unwavering support, for the safety. they are in my daily prayers. i also pray for agnes and ivan, for peace and wisdom. may god bless hong kong and we will continue to fight for freedom and now is not the time for us to kowtow to beijing and to surrender. i'm joined now byjoseph cheng — former professor at the city university of hong kong and a pro—democracy activist. thank you for coming on the programme. what do you think this means, this court case, means for the pro—democracy movement in hong kong was to mike this is a prominent mike this is a -- movement in hong kong was to mike this is a -- this is a prominent case against the majority of eminent activists in the pro—democracy movement in the pro—democracy movement in the territory. these prosecutions have been used to exert pressure on the activists and typically they start with arrests, searches of their officers and residences and then their passports will be confiscated and sometimes they may be detained without bail and of course, joshua's case has attracted a lot of attention but we have to bear in mind that even in the recent months, quite a number of legislators, counsellors, journalists, teachers and so on, have also been prosecuted. so this is seen as a way, as a campaign of suppression against the opposition, against the pro—democracy movement and it reflects a total lack of tolerance for political opposition in the territory. and the expectation here is that they will go to prison now? it seems likely. the verdict may well be delivered tomorrow and i inc on the part ofjoshua and his colleagues —— i think. there is expectation that they may go to prison. at any rate, this is not the only case that they have to face. like most of the prominent activists, they have to face quite a number of prosecutions and these prosecutions, as i just said, are intended to exert pressure on them and to deter them from engaging in all types of political activities. what do you think these cases do for china's image around the world 7 do for china's image around the world? it will be bad for china. it certainly means that china. it certainly means that china does not respect the one country, two systems model, that they have come back on the promises made to the hong kong people in the conclusion of the declaration in 1984. but u nfortu nately, declaration in 1984. but unfortunately, china now suffers from a faster deteriorating international environment and it seems like the chinese leaders feels that they are threatened, that the regime's very survival is in question and therefore chinese leaders are quite willing to pay the price in terms of international image to impose this policy of suppression, this policy of suppression, this policy of crackdown, i'll hong kong. thank you very much for coming on the programme. the head of the us covid—19 vaccine programme says the first americans to receive the vaccine could get it as soon as december 11th, less than three weeks from now. dr monsef slaoui says he hopes to be able to ship vaccines to immunisation sites, within 24 hours of regulatory approval. our washington correspondent, lebo diseko, has more. as the us battles to deal with coronavirus at last, some welcomed news. the head of the government vaccine programme saying that immunisation could start in less than three weeks. the second the emergency authorisation is approved, the acip and the cdc will issue recommendations for who will get the vaccines on a priority basis. that's very likely to be health care workers, maybe first line workers, maybe individuals that are very high risk, elderly. infection rates are rising at alarming rates across the country. but immunisation efforts risk being undermined by lack of trust in the process. a recent poll showed less than 60% of americans would take up a covid—19 vaccine. that is up to 50% in september, but still less than the 70% needed to achieve herd immunity. there are a couple of things are going to the effectiveness of the vaccine programme. a highly efficatious vaccine and we have two of them that have a 95% efficacy. the other part of the equation is how many people get vaccinated. if you have a highly efficacious vaccine and only a relatively small 40—50% of the people get vaccinated, you're not going to get the herd immunity that you need. with days until thanksgiving, they're preparing for a holiday season unlike any other. turkey giveawayse happen every year, but with pandemicjob losses, the scale of those in need is just one thing that makes it very different. i came out to give out free turkeys, free groceries and especially during this pandemic, we need it. the other is the warning from the top health authority not to travel to spend time with friends and family. friday saw more than a million people travelling through america's airports. it's less then half the volume of this time last year. but still bound to raise alarm about the virus's spread. for donald trump, another day spent on the golf course. he still refuses to concede thatjoe biden is president—elect. and he's blocking the sharing of sensitive information, including on the vaccine. mr biden‘s team says it puts distribution of it in jeopardy because it is they, rather than donald trump's team, that will be responsible for any roll—out. we can now speak to dr michael mina who's assistant professor of epidemiology at harvard th chan school of public health and a core member of the centre for communicable disease dynamics. thank you so much for coming on the programme. the timescales here seem pretty incredible. just three weeks also then immunisation rollout could begin. what do you make of that? i think we should anticipate seeing, as i said, and immunisation rollout but how quickly that rollout actually occurs i think is yet to be determined. we are expecting authorisation in the next few weeks and then we will see some people begin to get vaccinated, but whether it is 20,000 people or 20 million people, by the end of december, isa people, by the end of december, is a big unknown at the moment. and what are some of the logistical challenges then? one of the greatest ones is certainly how these vaccines will be distributed. and their cold chain. these vaccines need to be kept very cold, at —70 celsius which is colder than antarctica in the winter. to do that requires a lot of logistical hurdles that are going to have to be overcome in the next few weeks in order to see a rapid rollout of these. do we know what kind of infrastructure or the surrounding logistics that have to be in place, are we confident that they are in place? i think they are getting in place now that the vaccine rollout is becoming increasingly imminent, but i would imagine there is a lot of scrabbling going on behind the scenes to figure out where will the freezers be? what will be actually transportation of the vaccines look like and frankly, we don't yet know exactly who will be getting these vaccines. will it be the first line workers? will it be only healthcare people? workers? will it be only healthca re people? will workers? will it be only healthcare people? will it be healthcare people? will it be healthcare plus elderly? there is still quite an ongoing discussion. by your tone, your, by your quite cautious tone, i am assuming you are not thinking a huge rollout and max vaccinations this year certainly? no and i think it is going to be, certainly, we a lwa ys going to be, certainly, we always overshoot what we really think, what actually happens andi think, what actually happens and i would say that we have to be pretty cautious. we certainly can't let our guard down this year. probably not until the springtime when we have a large, large number of people in the united states vaccinated. these vaccines have to go to places all across the globe. notjust one or two countries. so we have to be cognisant countries. so we have to be cognisa nt of just how countries. so we have to be cognisant ofjust how many vaccines can be produced and just how quickly. thanks so much for coming on. absolutely. stay with us on bbc news, still to come: the perfect present for a russian patriot: what a board game on sale in moscow, says about the increasing importance of patriotism in the country. benazir bhutto has claimed victory in pakistan's general election and she's asked pakistan's president to name her as prime minister. jackson's been released on bail of $3 million after turning himself into police in santa barbara. it was the biggest demonstration so far of the fast—growing european anti—nuclear movement. the south african government has announced that its opening the country's remaining whites—only beaches to people of all races. this will lead to a black majority government in this country and the destruction of the white civilisation. part of the centuries—old windsor castle, one of the queen's residences, has been consumed by fire for much of the day. 150 firemen have been battling the blaze, which has caused millions of pounds worth of damage. this is bbc news, the latest headlines. the prominent hong kong democracy activist, joshua wong says he will plead guilty to all charges at the trial relating to last year's siege of the territory's police headquarters. the us says it hopes to approve and start distributing a coronavirus vaccine in less than three weeks time. donald trump is beginning to face pressure from some senior republicans to drop his attempts to overturn joe biden's victory in the us presidential election. the former newjersey governor and confidant of the president, chris christie, described the conduct of mr trump's legal team as a "national embarrassment". mr trump's former national security advisor, hr mcmaster, said mr trump's corrosive actions were sowing doubt among the electorate. it comes a day after a judge in pennsylvania dismissed a lawsuit from the trump campaign that sought to invalidate millions of mail—in votes, alleging irregularities. the president himself first started tweeting allegations of fraud as far back as april, and has mentioned rigged elections or voter fraud more than 70 times. they are trying to steal the election, rigby election, and we can't let that happen. kelly hyman is a political analyst and democratic strategist and she joins me now from south florida. thank you so much for coming on the programme. thank you so much for having me on the show, nice to see you. what you make of this dribble of senior republicans coming out and saying to donald trump that the game is up and he should stop this tactic, but still not an overwhelming majority of republicans are calling for that by any means? you make a really good point but i would say that it is about time. us in the us, we believe in democracy and donald trump has every right to proceed in legal battle in the court, however there has been no evidence, no showing of any type of fraud, and trump has been tweeting about this for months, so in an abundance of caution, people have made sure, belt and suspenders, that the election was secure and the people voted and over 6 million people chose joe biden over trump and now trump needs to move forward and unite this country and make sure thatjoe biden's team is the proper stuff to move this country the proper stuff to move this cou ntry forward the proper stuff to move this country forward and move forward with our allies. the problem we are trying to unite the country is the millions of donald trump supporters who believe there was voter fraud. there is no evidence of that, there has been nothing substantiated to prove that allegation, that's a false narrative that trump has been saying for months, as you said, even before the election, so it is obvious the people chosejoe biden are now ready to move forward and unite this country, that's why peoplejoe biden, to unite us, and move this country forward and especially with our allies. do you think this is doing long—term damage to america's reputation, orjust the state of politics inside america? i hope not. as i said before they made sure that we live in a democracy, people's vote should count, everyone's boys should be heard and that what we believe, and that's what's great about the country, people got out and voted, so we can agree to disagree about it, but there has been no evidence and i'm hoping there will be no long—term damage for our country, or with our allies in regards to the litigation of donald trump and also with our democracy and election process. we must leave it there, but thank you very much. us president—electjoe biden will announce the first names chosen for his cabinet on tuesday, and there's already speculation about who will be on the list. ‘s multiple news outlets are reporting that antony blinken, a veteran diplomat and longtime confidant of mr biden, is a likely pick for secretary of state. we can now speak to our north america correspondent david willis. hello david, what do we know then about antony blinken?. lot of speculation that antony blinken will be named asjoe biden's secretary of state on tuesday, and he is someone who has been atjoe biden's save 20 yea rs, has been atjoe biden's save 20 years, the major man, as far as vice to mr biden on foreign policy matters is concerned, he served under barack 0bama and he isa served under barack 0bama and he is a man who is it thought could calm some of the foreign leaders who have been aghast by the literary‘s rather nationalist, nationalistic posting as far as foreign policy is concerned. we are also expecting the possibility ofa also expecting the possibility of a nomination for treasury secretary this week, and a number of names in the frame there, including the former chair of the federal reserve, and joe biden of course under pressure to name a very inclusive cabinet, one as he puts it will represent america, the face of america, in terms of gender, race, and so on, and he is also under pressure from progressives to name people who will be familiar and favourable to them, bernie sanders of course calling for ever aggressive to be named to the cabinet, so there we go, a lot coming up in the next week for joe biden, before of course, we get into the thanksgiving holiday here. plenty of plans and plenty of work going on by the president—elect‘s team, but what about the existing president? still no concession, what is donald trump up to? in pennsylvania, they are challenging the results of a lawsuit that was filed there u nsuccessfully, lawsuit that was filed there unsuccessfully, seeking to throw out millions of male in balance or postal votes there, thejudge balance or postal votes there, the judge damning in balance or postal votes there, thejudge damning in his verdict, calling it a frankenstein's monster of a court case and dismissing it, they are appealing there, in georgia, they are a vote count, a recount of the vote in wisconsin, and donald trump is not giving up on this, and he is also looking to put pressure on republican state lawmakers in some of those key battleground states. good stuff, thank you david. the ethiopian prime minister has issued an ultimatum demanding the surrender of tigrayan forces within 72 hours, as the government prepares to attack the northern regions capital of mek‘ele. it's the third week of open conflict between the central government and regional leaders that's forced thousands from their homes. 0ur africa editor, will ross reports. some of the weapons ethiopia's military is using in its fight against regional troops in tigray. both sides have been talking of success, but with all communication to the region switched off, we just don't know the true picture on the ground. the military says it's seized several towns in northern tigray, and is now turning its attention to the regional capital, mek‘ele. it talks of surrounding the city with tanks and using artillery. there was a chilling message for the more than half a million people living there. translation" we want to send a message to the public in mek‘ele to save themselves from any artillery attacks and free themselves from the junta. after that, there will be no mercy. the tigrayan leadership has downplayed reports of gains by the ethiopian army. it says its troops will fight hard to stop these government soldiers advancing. more than 30,000 people have already fled the fighting and have crossed here into sudan. a country which has been going through its own political and economic troubles. in an effort to stop the crisis deepening, the african union has agreed to send three former presidents to mediate in ethiopia. but the government has made it clear it wants to fight on. it says the envoys will not be able to visit tigray and has ruled out talks with the tplf politicians who are in charge there. we don't negotiate with criminals. you know, when it comes to criminals, we are bringing them to justice, not to the negotiation table. this has been declared, stated policy of the government. i think our african brothers and sisters would play the most significant role if they put pressure on the tplf to surrender. the government has some military advantages. they can fly armed drones out of a base in neighbouring eritrea that is run by the united arab emirates. the prime minister has not the first time given the tigrayan forces and their political leaders 72 hours to surrender. so far, they have shown no sign of giving up the fight. we don't know the full extent of the civilian suffering caused by this conflict, but if the threats are carried out, it might be about to get far worse. christmas is just round the corner. if you celebrate it — you might well be thinking about what presents to buy for your friends and family. 0ur moscow correspondent steve rosenberg has an idea for you. christmas is coming, and the big question, of course, is what to get the kids. well, i was in my local moscow supermarket yesterday, and in the toy section i spotted this. which says a lot, i think, about today's russia. it's a board game for children aged between five and ten, and it's called we are proud of our motherland. it's a very patriotic present. let me just read you a bit of the blurb. "pride in and love for the motherland is the foundation of self—esteem and personal identity, and patriotism is the highest form of social consciousness, channelling the power of the people into creativeness and development." not exactly snakes and ladders or happy families, is it? anyway, let's play. basically, you have to find the patriotic pictures that match patriotic poems on these cards. for example, "if our enemy comes at us with war, our army and navy will guard the door. planes, tanks, cannons, nuclear missile silos. enemies don't make us mad, we are the strongest in the world." nice. if you're lucky to have been dealt some of these images, you put them down. next poem. "russia is invincible. we will defend russia from any aggressor. the japanese have fought wars against us, so have the greeks, the khazars, the turks, the swedes, the lithuanians, the germans." we sent them all packing. 0ur enemies will never beat us, they never could and never will." you get the general idea. i think games like this reflect the growing emphasis the authorities here are placing on patriotic education in russia. 0k, time for one more card. russian sport. "our top athletes defend the country's honour. 0ur cross—country skiers and basketball players, runners and swimmers, wrestlers and bobsleigh teams, they're all brilliant. they have won lots of trophies and medals." hm, no mention of russia's 4—year ban from international sport for doping. oh, well, it's only a game. the world's deepest man—made diving pool has opened in the polish capital warsaw. the structure is 45.5 metres deep, and includes a small wreck for divers to explore and even some mock mayan ruins. it's been able to open despite coronavirus restrictions because it is a training centre. as well as offering courses to diving enthusiasts, it will also be used by the army and the fire brigade. it might only hold the record for a few months though — there's a pool due to open next year in the uk which will be 50 metres deep. you can reach me on twitter, i'm @ l vaughanjones. this is the bbc news, goodbye. hello there. high pressure means a largely dry but rather a chilly start to the new working week with a touch of frost in place. however, a frontal system up to the north—west will eventually change things for some as we head on up through monday. but the morning starts off rather on a chilly note. temperatures down around freezing even a touch below first on. not as cold in the far south with some extra cloud, not as cold in the far west either. in the cloud in the west will roll its way eastwards through the day introducing rain into northern england, wales, the south—west. especially around the coast and over the hills the sunshine through the afternoon across eastern counties of england and perhaps some parts of north—east scotland. windy, particularly towards the north—west. those are the average speeds. the gusts could touch 60 mph for the western isles. turning milder from the west. it will be a bit of a struggle with those temperatures in eastern areas after such a chilly start. but as we go through monday night into tuesday, that milder air will waft its way right across the british isles. temperatures by tuesday morning, double digits for most of us. still some rain across northern ireland and scotland with quite a lot of cloud elsewhere. as you go through tuesday with this wriggling frontal system, we will see further pulses of rain across northern ireland and scotland. quite a wet day in prospect actually, on tuesday across northern ireland, some heavy rain across western parts of scotland. for england and wales, drier conditions, some spells of sunshine, best of that towards the south and the east. and tuesday will be the mildest day of the week. highs of 11, 12 or 13 degrees. that is set to change because as we move out of tuesday and into wednesday, this wriggling frontal system will finally start to push eastwards. the rain along it will tend to weaken but behind that weather front, a cold front. we open the door to some much colder air which will start to push in from the north—west. the remnants of this front are likely to linger across south england. perhaps southern coastal counties more generally through the day on wednesday with some patchy rain. some showers in north—west scotland, sunshine in between but temperatures for many stuck in the single digits by this stage. and it stays rather cool by day and chilly by night as we head towards the end of the week. largely dry with some frost and fog in places. this is bbc news, the headlines: the prominent hong kong, pro—democracy activist, joshua wong, has announced he will plead guilty at the opening of a trial over his involvement in last year's siege of the territory's police headquarters. wong who is on trial with two other activists says he expects to be jailed. the head of the us coronavirus vaccine programme says he expects to begin an immunisation programme from the eleventh of december. dr moncef slaoui said he hopes two vaccines from pfizer and moderna could be ready to be shipped within 24 hours of final approval. donald trump is beginning to face pressure from some senior republicans to drop his attempts to overturn joe biden's victory in the us presidential election. the former newjersey governor — chris christie, has described mr trump's legal team as a "national embarrassment."
