From futuristic, what happened here yesterday seems to be another worrying indication that in fact things are going backwards. A professional footballer telling the referee, telling the world, that he has heard monkey chants. Not on a distant football pitch in eastern europe. This was Chelseas Antonio Rudiger at tottenham hotspur, in englands capital city, famed, theoretically, for its diversity. Rudiger himself posted several tweets expressing his dismay at the incident, but also stressing the importance of talking publicly about racism, so that its notjust forgotten about, as he suggests always happens. Rudiger also points out that in a modern ground like tottenham hotspurs, with so many cameras in place, it should be possible to both isolate and punish the offender. Announcer racist behaviour among spectators is interfering with the game. Please remember that in football there is no place for racism. A warning was made over the loudspeaker three times at the game, but there was no move to take the players off, a somewhat confused application of footballs races and protocols. Of footballs racism protocols. The pfa, which represents professional footballers, now calls for more. It wants a government enquiry into racism in british football. At the moment, most decent people in this country and i feel thats the majority are being tarnished by the actions of a minority, and all the things, the great things we stood for in 2012, with the olympics and all the inclusivity and tolerance, its being eroded slowly, and that cant be. We cant allow that to happen. When englands footballers faced racist chants and nazi salutes in bulgaria, englands manager always stressed there were problems at home to address. Well, he was right. This month there was racial abuse at manchester citys game with manchester united, and now rudigers experience at tottenham. These are just the high profile examples, but these are the images the world sees. The police have told us they made six arrests during the match here yesterday. They say none of those was related directly to the rudiger incident which they will continue to investigate but they do say one arrest was for a racially aggravated public order offence, which suggests there was more than one isolated incident. Joe wilson, thank you. Prince charles is visiting people affected by flooding last month in the village of fishlake in south yorkshire. Our correspondent dan johnson is there. Dan. This is one of the villages that was worst hit. There are hundreds of people here who will be out of their homes not just people here who will be out of their homes notjust for christmas but people here who will be out of their homes not just for christmas but for many months. This morning the prince came to meet some of those people and residents and to see some of the houses and how badly they have been affected. He also visited the pub and church here which acted as a refuge centres for the villagers over the days this village was submerged by overflowing water from the river don as it flooded in early november. He has also met rescue workers who were part of the effort to try to save people here and he has heard frustrations of the residents about the fact there was not better flood protection and that some insurance pay outs have been very slow. He heard those complaints directly from residents this morning who have been the main thanked him for coming to the village and making the effort just before for coming to the village and making the effortjust before christmas. But it will be a long time for people here are back in their homes because the damage is so severe. And its not just because the damage is so severe. And its notjust this village, thousands of homes were affected gcioss thousands of homes were affected across north nottinghamshire, derbyshire and south yorkshire. When i managed to ask the prince about the condition of his father, the duke of edinburgh, he said briefly that he was being observed very well in hospital at the moment and thats all we know for now. Dan johnson, many thanks. Saudi arabia has announced that its sentenced five people to death for the killing of thejournalist, jamal khashoggi. Mr khashoggi, a well known critic of the saudi government, was murdered in the saudi consulate in turkey last year. Our security correspondent Frank Gardner joins me now. Has this come out of the blue . Yes, it has. It was not preannounced. The trial has been taking place in secret for the last 11 months. Ithink taking place in secret for the last 11 months. I think the saudi authorities hope this will draw a line under the whole grisly business. I dont think it will. There has already been a reaction. Foreign secretary dominic raab has issued a typically cautious Foreign Office statement but saying, if you read between the lines, he calls on saudi arabia to bring to account all those responsible. Agnes cala ma has gone further, the Un Special Envoy into this murder, and she has said this makes a mockery ofjustice because the five hit men have been sentenced to death but she says those ultimately responsible further up those ultimately responsible further up the chain are walking free. So i think the cloud of suspicion that has been hanging over saudi arabia ever since this grisly murder in 2018 will not be fully dispelled by these verdicts. Frank gardner, thank you. There are growing signs that the Islamic State group is re organising in iraq, two years after it lost the last of its territory there. Kurdish and western intelligence officials have told the bbc that is in iraq is now more skilled and more dangerous than alqaeda. Kurdish Security Forces are warning that history is in danger of repeating itself, as orla guerin reports. From a hilltop in northern iraq, a sweeping view of territory reclaimed from the Islamic State group. The kurdish peshmerga, who helped drive them out, tell us now they are making a comeback. The militants are exploiting an area of no mans land, disputed terrain between kurdish and iraqi forces. Looking at this territory here now right in front of us, do isis have free rein here now . Yes, i can say, yes. Especially between, the delta between the great zab and tigris river, they are permanent there. Are you worried . Of course. Of course im worried, because they are a really big threat. Day by day, we can see the movement of isis, the activities, they reorganise themselves. Is has done that an hours drive away in hawija, which was their last stronghold in iraq. The authorities have planted theirflag, but the militants are hunting local officials. Like the father of these children. He was a mukhtar, a village chief, who monitors comings and goings and informs the police. The youngest keep asking when daddys coming home. His mother is overwhelmed by grief. At the loss of her bright eyed boy, shot dead in october. She tells me he was their breadwinner, their guide and their shepherd. It is by night that is emerge, spreading their terror as before. This chilling propaganda video shows a mukhtar being led away to his death. Nine have been killed in hawija alone. The area is tense. We have to travel with an armed escort. Iraqi forces are facing an enemy that is close but hard to find. Well, is cant hold territory here any more, but they can still strike. Theyve been carrying out deadly attacks here, and they can still create fear among the local population. Many in the area are too frightened to speak. Militia fighters in hawija are on alert. One of their checkpoints was targeted earlier this month. Hussain survived but saw two of his friends killed. Translation its very difficult. I still cannot sleep and i go to a psychologist. They were my guys. We would eat and drink and sleep together. They were my brothers. Since the caliphate crumbled, is has been driven underground to caves and tunnels beneath these mountains. But iraq has seen terror grow from these beginnings before. And the fear is a new threat is coming, for the region and the west. Orla guerin, bbc news, northern iraq. The australian Prime Minister, scott morrison, has restated his support of the coal industry, despite conceding that Climate Change is a factor in the extreme hot weather fuelling the countrys bushfires. Despite the heat easing today, more than 100 fires continue to burn across the state of new south wales. Phil mercer has more. The fires that have incinerated the land and left communities in ruins have been called monsters and beasts. Lives have been lost and hundreds of homes have been destroyed. A long drought has made the ground bone dry. Hot and windy weather has conspired to raise the threat level in parts of australia in recent days to catastrophic. Scott Morrisons Centre right government is an Ardent Supporter of the coal industry. It generates much of australias electricity and pumps billions into the economy. To some of his critics, he is a climate criminal. Mr morrison concedes there is a link between Global Warming and the bushfires, but he says there is no need to panic and impose new Carbon Emissions targets, which he calls reckless and job destroying. You dont run government on sentiment. You run government on the facts, and you run government on what you need to do to protect our environment, sustainability for the future, to protect our economy and the jobs and livelihoods that australians depend upon. 100 blazes still burn in new south wales. Some are so big theyll only be extinguished by heavy rain that might be months away. This is a national crisis. Fires are menacing communities in the states of South Australia and victoria. Western australia and queensland have had dangerous days, too. Bushfires have always been part of the australian story, but this fire season has not only started earlier than usual it is far more intense and could get worse. Phil mercer, bbc news, sydney. Now a scientist from Leeds University is helping to update it, creating signs for describing the latest discoveries in the world of astronomy. This report, by our science correspondent victoria gill, will be translated simultaneously into bsl. So far, we have looked at some simple terms, such as the moon, sun, Northern Lights and some of the planets like saturn and jupiter, but we definitely need more new signs. Explaining the mysteries of our universe is tricky in any language, but in british sign language for many of the latest discoveries in the astrophysical world there simply are no words, so those words, new astronomical signs, are being created. The planets that you will find in protoplanetary discs are not the same as the extra planets that we observe in planetary systems. Teaming up with british sign language linguists, one astrophysicist is helping to develop signs to encourage deaf astronomers, students and enthusiasts, to join the celestial conversation. It is a field of science that is rapidly advancing and it needs new language to be able to communicate these new discoveries. Ifind personally its really so exciting that i could actually design a sign myself together with them, i could input into what the sign would be and it would be there forever in the british sign language, so, wow, i find that amazing. Ok, so it is not implying an orbit. It is more than 20 years since the discovery of the first planet outside of our solar system, the first known exoplanet. Exoplanet. Today in this small workshop that discovery is finally being given a sign. For some of these complicated concepts there are foundations in language that already exist, so there is a sign for planet, but there is no sign for exoplanet, so that could be a planet that is far away. So it is about building on the foundations that already exist as well as visualising the science. Once the new sign has been decided on it is added to a video dictionary. This project has made me realise how useful it is. Ive been involved in astronomy for a while but ive realised how valuable these new terms are going to be for members of the deaf community. Actually, its increased my interest as well and given open access for other people. So i think its very important and i think its important that this happens across a range of science subjects. So beyond just looking at the stars, the hope is that more people will feel empowered to talk about and really see the latest discoveries about the universe. Victoria gill, bbc news. Thats it. The next news on bbc one is at 6 30pm this evening. Now its time for the news where you are. Goodbye. Hello. Youre watching the bbc news channel. Lets get more on the call from the professional Footballers Association for a government inquiry into racism within football, after the chelsea player, antonio rudiger, complained of hearing monkey noises from the crowd during yesterdays premier league match at tottenham. The professional Footballers Association said it was disgusted by the reports, and insisted urgent action was needed. Earlier i spoke to bobby barnes, the pfas deputy chief executive. Lets hear about this, when we talk about racism in football, that is a very narrow definition, football in itself is not racism and it not divorced from wider society. People do not come to a football match and become racist. Theyre bringing those views into the stadium and manifesting themselves in such a way as in any other walk of life they would face severe criminal action for what is effectively a hate crime. I mean, obviously there is cctv footage, there are lots of mobile phone cameras in the crowd, do you think the culprits will be quickly identified and dealt with at an individual level . I think with the modern technology, we have cctv in most crowds, i think it is not a real stretch to identify the people andi real stretch to identify the people and i think the clubs when they are identifies, the clubs do impose pretty long if not lifetime bans. The issue where it falls down, when they do come out of football system if you like into the widerjustice system, they tend to get sentences which are no more than a slap on the wrist. That hardly serve s as a deterrent. Ultimately we, as the pfa, the premier league, you know do not have the powers to actually sanction members of public. That responsibility lies with the public authorities. And is that why you wa nt authorities. And is that why you want the government inquiry, because you want those sanctions to be beefed up . Very much so, but we have a situation where football is the national sport. I think great merit can be had by working together to try and find solutions, without doubt we within football are committed to dealing with this problem and im sure the government would equally want to ensure they protect the National Game and also ensure that the laws of land are respected, because you know the things that go on in football grounds and on social media are really a throw back to times that we thought we had left long behind us and my big concern is if we are not careful and dont preserve our game as best we can and use what tools we can, we will with a situation where potentially you have parents being turned off the game and saying, they will not want their children to watch the game. Bobby barnes. The presenter of the itv show love island, Caroline Flack, has pleaded not guilty to assaulting her boyfriend at herflat in north london. Helena wilkinson is at highbury magistrates in north london. What happened in court . Well Caroline Flack left court in the last half an hour or. So she struggled to get through what was a media scrum and had to be escorted by Police Officers to the waiting car. In court today, she appeared before a magistrate, she entered the dock, as she did so, she passed the Public Gallery and in that packed Public Gallery and in that packed Public Gallery and in that packed Public Gallery was her boyfriend, who she is accused of assaulting. The court heard from the prosecution, who allege that Caroline Flack allegedly hit her boyfriend over the head with a lamp, while he was asleep, because she was worried that he was cheating on her. The prosecution said when they went to the flat, where Caroline Flack and her boyfriend were after the alleged incident, police say they we re alleged incident, police say they were both covered in blood and one Police Officer described the scene as if it was like a horror movie. She in court said very little, confirmed her name, age and date of birth and she was asked how she would plead. She pleaded not guilty today to that one charge of assaulting her boyfriend. We also heard in court that her boyfriend does not support the prosecutions case. He said in a statement through his solicitor, which was read out by Caroline Flacks defence solicitor, that her boyfriend doesnt support the prosecution, has never supported the prosecution, has never supported the prosecution, has never supported the prosecution and has strong feelings about the hearing and it went on to say he is not a victim, he isa went on to say he is not a victim, he is a witness. But despite that, the prosecution say they are still going ahead, even though her boyfriend is not going to co operate and a trial date has been set for march 4th. In the meantime Caroline Flack has left the court and she has got bail conditions set upon her, one of which is she is not allowed to co nta ct one of which is she is not allowed to contact her boyfriend and when she was told that in court, she burst into tears. So she will be back here march 11th for a trial that is expected to last a day and a half. Thank you. The former labour leader, ed miliband, is to take part in a review examining the partys heavy defeat in the general election. The activist group, labour together, is setting up a commission tasked with mapping out a route back to power. The review will be led by the former shadow education secretary, lucy powell. I spoke to lucy powell a little earlier on, she explained what the review was trying to achieve. We are looking to do is to have a really comprehensive objective and most importantly inclusive process, taking us into the new year, where we hear from members, taking us into the new year, where we hearfrom members, activists, defeated candidates, pollsters and others and we are also going to talk to the public in many of the seats that we lost in this election. To really work out what are some of the underlying trends, some of the issues that we have faced and how we might seek to address them. So that we can produce ahead of hopefully the ballots going out for the leadership race, we really big piece of work that would stand the test of time and help shape and chart that way for the labour party over the coming years. One thing that will puzzle some observers is that you have invited a former lead earps er, who lost an election, have you also invited the former leader who won several elections . I think actually you learn much more from doing things badly and wrong, or for making m ista kes badly and wrong, or for making mistakes than you often do from learning other things. Ed miliband, yes, he is a former leader, but he is also a current mp. He is very releva nt to is also a current mp. He is very relevant to the debate we are having today. He represents one of the seats that so called part of red wall, where there was a big swing from labour and he like many other mps and activists has spent many days and hours over the last weeks and months knocking on doors and speaking to the electorate. He is very relevant to today and he has that experience of notjust being pa rt that experience of notjust being part ofan that experience of notjust being part of an election campaign, but from being in the topjob if part of an election campaign, but from being in the top job if you like of the labour party and understanding the pressures of that. Sorry to interrupt, if i could pursue the point, some would say a failure to look hard at what went wrong in 2017 and a failure to really face up to mistakes then is one of the things that went wrong in 2019 for your party . Yes, we have lost four elections in a row now and we havent actually taken the time to look deeply at whats been going on in those elections. Sorry to pursue the point, in which case, why bring on a person who famed to lack failed to look, why bring ed miliband if he failed to look hard at what wept wrong went wrong when he was in charge. Well, we should have looked at 2015 and im sure he would have advocated that as well. But the answers dont lie in the past, the answers lie in the future. We have to learn the lessons from the past and everybodys got something to contribute in learning those lessons from the past. But i think what i would say in response to that, if people think the answers only lie in winning an election 22 yea rs only lie in winning an election 22 years ago, before the Global Financial crisis, before brexit, before mps expenses, before we had some of the wars and some of humanitarian crisis, they would be just as wropg. Wrong. The answers lie in the future. The coalition that the Labour Party Needs to win backis that the Labour Party Needs to win back is a different electoral challenge to the one tony blair faced. When he was standing as labour leader, you could bank on returning dozens of Labour Party Mps in scotland and in wales and right across the north and the midlands, seats that have been labour for a hundred years that are no longer labour and some of trends are not just about this one or that one particular leader. These are trends that have been coming for a while andi that have been coming for a while and i think unless we actually look at those and start to reconnect with some communities that we have lost touch with, it wont matter who becomes the next leader. We have a short time, i want to ask one more question, do you think that there is any chance that your party can actually learn from the lessons that it derives and put them into practice, given that, well, critics would say it is in the thrall of several large vested interests and sectional interests and willjust do what is in the interest of those groups. That is one of things we are trying to overcome and bring together people from different factions and traditions, whether youre momentum or progress, your voice is important and we want to hear from you and from local government, trade union, scotland and wales and everyone else. If now is not the moment for us actually to united aside some o put aside system of the factional interests and start to come together, if now after this big defeat is not the time to do that, i dont know when is. I think most people in the labour party, we want to see a party that can win and win elections again, we also want to see a party thats unified and most of all we wa nt to thats unified and most of all we want to see a party that is rooted in our values. Lucy powell. The duke of edinburgh has spent a third night in hospital, receiving treatment for what royal officials have described as a pre existing condition. Calls for a government inquiry into racism in football, after a premier league match is stopped for the first time because of allegations of abuse from the stands. Iffy onoura from the professional Footballers Association says politicians should take action and be mindful of their role in what is a societal issue. Its been legitimised by some of the language from politicians. Again, if you asked people to be impartial in an enquiry and you are taking the lead in that, just that one idea tempers and checks your language. You check in and say ive got to look and talk differently about that. Four years ago, we think that was a similar moment, but that has been and gone. Joe koch kes, obviously, that has been and gone. We have not used that as moment thing canon were what are we doing here. Mikejo cox. Its got worse if anything, how could that be . Weve got to look at this differently address it differently and be bolder. Kurdish and western intelligence officials have told the bbc that the is presence in iraq is a sophisticated insurgency, and is attacks are increasing. Lahur talibany is a Kurdish Counter Terrorism official and director of one of the two intelligence agencies in iraq. He told orla guerin that a different kind of is has emerged. The dispute between krg and the Central Government has left a lot of land unmanned and isis is taking advantage of the situation. This stretches from the Iranian Border going all the way up to mosul and the syrian border. They have easy access of travel through these areas. We see now the activity increasing and we think that the reorganisation stage is over now. There is a major security vacuum in these no go areas between the iraqi forces and the Peshmerga Forces . Nobody is dealing with the Security Threat in these areas . Isis is patrolling it, unfortunately. Do you think this is the same phase as 2012 when they were starting to rebuild and starting to become a serious threat . I think it is more stronger than 2012, to be honest. My main concern is the political instability in baghdad. This will feed into the future of isis. If we have political unrest this is heaven for them, this is christmas come early for isis. Do you think it is a new beginning for them . I would say it would be a different type of isis. No longer will they want to control land or cities, i think they will go back to the asymetric warfare of alqaeda with more experience and techniques and tactics that alqaeda did not have. I think it is an issue for us to be worried about. Not only us, i think the International Community should be worried about the re emergence of isis, because in the past a problem in iraq became a global problem. The kind of rebuilding they have managed to do in the last 12 months, has that been a surprise to you that they have been able to do this so quickly . They have better techniques and tactics and they have a lot more finances at their disposal. I dont know if this money was money that they saved in the past from the oil trade, but they seem to have a lot more money than alqaeda had in the old days. They are able to buy vehicles, weaponry, Food Supplies and equipment. Like i said, they are like alqaeda on steroids. They have picked up a lot of experience in the past three orfour years. Technologically they are more savvy, it is more difficult to flush them out or to find them. They are like alqaeda on steroids, these guys. Lahur talabany, the head of the kurdish Zanyari Intelligence Agency speaking to our international correspondent, orla guerin. Chinas Foreign Ministry has denied allegations that prisoners are being used forforced labour, after tesco suspended production of christmas cards at a factory in shanghai while it investigates claims. Six year old Florence Widdicombe found a plea for help in one of the cards, apparently written by a foreign prisoner in qingpu prison. The supermarket says it was shocked and would never allow the use of prison labour in its supply chain. William nee is a business and human rights analyst at amnesty international. Prison labour is very common in china and that its used, obviously, in prisons, but there is even sometimes where its used in detention facilities, where people havent been sentenced through a court. And also in xinjiang, which is a big region in the northwest of china, you know, three times larger than france. There are many predominantly muslim people, uighurs who are being detained in this area, and many of those people have been in re education camps and theyre now coming out of those camps and having to do forced labour, as well. So this is something that Companies Need to be alert about when theyre looking to do business in china, to ensure that none of their supply chains involve forced labour. So, you know, this is what Companies Need to be doing. They need to be doing human rights, due diligence. And so, you know, im glad to hear that tesco has stopped and that theyre going to do an investigation. Gerald oppenheim is the chief executive of the fundraising regulator he said he would work with the Charities Involved to make sure this doesnt happen again they will be doing that and there are already arrangements in place to make sure that charities in the contracts they have with Third Party Suppliers do make it clear that things have to be produced ethically. Tesco will want to satisfy themselves that they were told the truth by the suppliers, that there was no forced labour involved. Clearly something has gone very wrong there. Tesco, like all retailers producing goods overseas, will do inspections of the places where these things are made and they will want to check up on all of that. The charities will want to know the outcome, as we will. Dozens of former thomas cook employees say theyre struggling to access benefits and pay their bills, three months after the travel chain collapsed. Some of those affected say theyve received just £50 in 12 weeks. The government has apologised, saying its dedicated staff have helped thousands of people. Simon browning reports. Disbelief. Pilots and cabin crew, their dreams over. The collapse of thomas cook has left a devastating legacy that three months on, many still cant comprehend. Being a stewardess for thomas cook defined me, and thats gone now. That feeling of loss, you know, wheres my career gone . I couldnt even get dressed. I couldnt face the world. Now, as christmas approaches, scores of former staff like betty and ian, whove waited months for benefits, say theyve been badly let down. You realise youre just a number. It doesnt matter what you have contributed or done. You are made to feel that it all doesnt matter, these are the rules, thats what they do and that is the end of it. Ex employees say they were given conflicting advice as to whether they were entitled to jobseekers allowance or universal credit. Mistakes led to their cases being closed and some have still not received more than £50 in 12 weeks. I had to wait five weeks for my first payment to come through, which was fine, but the day before the payment was due they closed my claim and basically told me because ive made too much money, but the money i had was my redundancy money from thomas cook but i havent claimed anything so im living off savings now. The job centre there. Ian, a pilot for four decades, admits hes had a better time at hisjob centre in chorley. We were looked after and given a lot of help, but speaking to my colleagues, i know some of them were treated pretty appallingly. Within the last week, i have spoken to dozens of former thomas cook employees from across the country. While some have managed to find work, others have had a much tougher time and they claim its because thejob centre has poorly advised them and many are not willing to speak on camera in case it damages their prospects even further. I spoke to my friends a few days ago and they havent got any otherjob yet because they cant face going to an interview, cant face going out of the house and theyre still really struggling. One of our friends, she ended up with her partner using her redundancy to live in a hotel, in a b8b, and she was declared homeless. The government has apologised if some people have experienced delays to claims. They told us their dedicated staff have helped thousands and they urge people to stay in contact with theirjob centres so they can urgently fix their claims. For almost two centuries, thomas cook brought holiday makers sunshine and fun but its demise continues to cast a shadow over its former staff. Simon browning, bbc news. In india Prime Ministerand hindu nationalist leader Narendra Modi, has tried to calm anger over a controversial new citizenship law, saying Indian Muslims have nothing to fear from it. At least 20 people have been killed in days of protests over the law with the police accused of using excessive force. Our south asia correspondent rajini Vaidya Nathan reports. Days of deadly violence, as indians continue to oppose a law they say is an assault on the rights of the countrys 200 million muslims. Cu rfews were imposed and internet was blocked in indias largest state, uttar pradesh. They say they have been brutally silenced. As the death toll rises, reports that some victims were shot by police, which the authorities deny. At a rally today, the indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed support for the countrys police, but failed to mention the civilian deaths. The hindu nationalist leader of the bjp party blamed the opposition for the current unrest and defended his citizenship Amendment Act which offers only non muslim Illegal Immigrants from certain countries fast track nationality. Translation muslims born on indian soil should not be concerned by the bill or the nrc. The nrc, the National Register of citizens, would introduce citizenship checks for everyone in the country something many protesters fear could target muslims. Today, the Prime Minister said his government hadnt discussed this proposal since he came to power in 2014. But his close ally, home minister amit shah, has repeatedly promised to introduce these checks. While the status of this is unclear, experts say the partys wider agenda isnt. There is no question that the bjp government is moving india in the direction of becoming a hindu state. When you introduce a law that brings religion into determining who is an indian, all indians become vulnerable. Indians from all backgrounds are taking to the streets as the movement against the citizenship law and the Modi Government grows stronger. The country is united like never before, and we will continue to fight for as long as it takes. If they want us to go home and call off the protest, just step back and acknowledge your mistake. Protesters say they are fighting for the future of indias secular constitution. They believe the government is trying to divide this country, and say that this show of unity is the only way to stop that happening. Rajini vaidyanathan, bbc news, delhi. The headlines on bbc news. Thank you very much, most kind. Overwhelmed. An extraordinary year for a remarkable man. Now its time for a look at the weather with stav danaos. The christmas week is looking fairly mixed. We are going to continue with further showers and longer spells of rain in the run up to Christmas Day, and then on Christmas Day looks like it will be largely dry, quite chilly, but a lot of sunshine around. Low pressure today, bringing further showers. This feature moving up from the south west will bring outbreaks of rain to england and wales as we head through tonight. Most of the showers for the rest of this afternoon will tend to be confined to one scotland and northern england, the odd heavy one mixed in there. Generally light winds, although it will be breezy across parts of scotland. Further south, widespread sunshine, top temperatures 10 11d. Single figures in the north. The showers continue in the north overnight, this area of rain pushes across england and wales. A heavy burst as it continues to push eastwards, perhaps one or two showers following as we head into Christmas Eve morning. This is how it is looking for Christmas Eve, low pressure to the north east of the country. These weather fronts enhancing the shower activity across the south west. It will be fairly damp to start across eastern areas. We will see a cluster of heavy thundery showers moving into south wales and the midlands, with thunderstorms mixing to that was with strong and gusty winds. Further north, a slow improvement, increasing amounts of sunshine, a bit breezy across the south. Top temperatures 11 12d. Again, single figure values in the north. As we head to Christmas Eve, the latter part of the day into the night, it should start in turn dry with the showers easing away. That is because we have this ridge of High Pressure building on for the big day itself. A settled one, a chilly start to Christmas Day with a touch of frost, may be a little bit of mist and fog too. As you can see on the map, light winds and plenty of sunshine around, so not a White Christmas unfortunately this year, but it will be fine and settled. Temperatures of 6 10 degrees, in the south. The next area of low pressure comes hurtling and for boxing day, a little mist and fog across eastern areas to be in with, but as they win wind builds from the south it will clear the mist and fog. There will be some snow over the high ground of the pennines and scotland as it moves eastward. 00 59 15,998 2147483052 06 22,714 temperatures a little 2147483052 06 22,714 4294966103 13 29,430 bit cooler, 7 10d
