At the world darts championship. We have had more rain on already saturated ground. Plenty of Flood Warning and plenty of mist and fog. Essentially, a day of sunshine and showers. More detail on that in the next half hour. Its sunday the 22nd of december. Our top story the authorities in australia are warning people its still not safe to return to areas devastated by wild fires, even where the flames appear to have been extinguished. The countrys Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, who was criticised for going on holiday during the crisis, has now conceded that Climate Change could be have contributed to the fires. Our sydney correspondent, Shaimaa Khaliljoins us now from balmoral in New South Wales. Good morning. We can see behind you, these fires still have a hold on the countryside . Good morning. Balmoral has been one of the worst hit villages from saturdays fires and many people have been told it is still extremely dangerous for them to come back and you can see why. Just behind me, look, the fires are still going on some of those trees. Still blazing, still smouldering, smoke all around us. The roads have been closed here stop firefighters have been telling people they cannot get in and out of the area just yet. All around us, you canjust see the extent of the devastation. The smoke, the smouldering trees. The danger as well of the tree trunks and branches cracking an opening. You can hear them crackling in the background. This is very much still an emergency situation. The community are quite in shop. Some saying that they are not allowed back and do not know what is happening. For some of them, they may not have anything to come back to given the destruction. I want to show you Something Else really quickly, just to tell you how unpredictable and random it is. Some of the houses are still intact and that the reason for that is because the direction of the wind has been making this very difficult. Itjumps from one place to another. While this area around me has been raised to the ground, some of the houses are still standing. Some houses com pletely are still standing. Some houses completely destroyed and others are still intact and many people worried about what is going to happen next, given we are still at the beginning of summerand given we are still at the beginning of summer and australia is bracing itself for a brutal, brutal summer head with raising temperatures. Obviously the risk to life is clear and apparent. A couple of firefighters killed on thursday and one person died yesterday. It should not be forgotten that this is not just dramatic but extremely dangerous . 10096. This is what we have been speaking to the firefighters and agencies about today. They priority now is to go into the areas, assess the damage and basically make sure that everybody is accounted for. This is very much a dramatic scene and many, many people have been evacuated the risk to life is still very real around here. Thank you very much. Well shortly be speaking to a resident of blackheath, one of the towns affected by the fires. Sir geoff hurst has led the tributes to his World Cup Winning Team mate, Martin Peters, who has died at the age of 76. Peters won 67 caps for england and played over 700 clubs games throughout his career. Our Sports Correspondent, Natalie Pirks, looks back at his life. Commentator 97,000 fans gave them the biggest roar of the competition. With all eyes on hurst, the danger from Martin Peters went unnoticed. Commentator and a chance on goal peters Little Wonder they called him the ghost. Theres Martin Peters, the man who scored the goal which could well win the world cup for england. His journey hisjourney had his journey had begun seven years earlier. Instead of following in his fathers footsteps, west ham came calling. He made his debut for the hammers in 1962 and won the european cup winners cup in 65. Sir alf ramsey said his style and ability was ten years ahead of his time, yet, amazingly, he didnt receive his first cap for england until the may of 1966. Peters has scored by 1970 his legend at west ham was secure. He left for spurs in a deal that made him britains first £200,000 midfielder. Oh, what a beautiful goal what a glorious header that was from Martin Peters with tottenham, he went on to win the league cup twice, the uefa cup, and he became club captain. He lived and breathed football. His family said they would find him practising headers in his sleep. But there are fears heading the ball helped cause his disease. Like some of his former team mates, he had been suffering with alzheimers. In the last few years he had withdrawn from public appearances. Dementia had robbed him of many of his most precious memories. But he remained one of only two englishmen to ever know the joy of scoring in a world cup final. Martin peters, who has died at the age of 76. Dozens of pesto products are being recalled overfears they may contain traces of peanut without listing it on the label. The products, all made by sauce maker sacla, also include own brand jars of pesto from supermarkets waitrose and aldi. The Food Standards Agency has issued an allergy alert, warning that 25 products may be affected. Mps have called on whirlpool to offer refunds or swift compensation, as it recalls half a million washing machines. The machines, sold under the hotpoint and indesit brands, have been identified as potential fire hazards. Whirlpool is to begin the recall in the second week of january. But mps says the delay means customers have been severely let down. A tornado has swept through parts of surrey, damaging cars and houses and ripping up trees. Large areas of england and wales have been affected by a band of very wet and windy weather. Throughout england, there are more than 90 Flood Warnings in place, with heavy rainfall disrupting travel on one of the busiest weekends of the year. The duke of edinburgh has spent a second night in hospital, in london. Hes receiving treatment for a pre existing condition after being admitted on the advice of his doctor. Simonjones is live at king edward the seventh hospital. A second night in hospital, no reason for us to worry too much . No, we have not had an updated statement from the palace overnight in fact we have not heard anything from them formally since the duke was admitted to hospital on friday. Back then they said he was admitted for a pre existing condition and they described the decision to bring him here as precautionary. I think, overall people are wondering what exactly is going on because we have not seen much of Prince Philip in public in recent times, not since he retired from official royal duties a couple of years ago. He was involved ina couple of years ago. He was involved in a nasty car crash in sandringham at the beginning of the year but emerge pretty much unscathed stop we have had very few updates about his time at the hospital but there is hope he will be well enough to leave hospital and return to sandringham with the queen before christmas. Buckingham palace has released new photos of the queen and her family together at christmas. The queen, along with princes george, william and charles are seen preparing christmas pudding. Its part of the Royal British legions initiative to help tackle loneliness among veterans at christmas. The queen has supported the charity since 1952. Looks like they are having fun. Baking with a handbag, who doesnt. They might put a 10p piece in there. You are watching bbc breakfast. We can get more now on those wildfires that are still burning in three australian states. Joining us now from blackheath, one of the towns affected by the fires, is adam poskitt. Thank you forjoining us. Bring us up to date with the situation where you. Things have gotten substantially better during the day. Early this morning received an alert to evacuate and that was at about 3am and as the day progressed things got worse and then at about midday thank started to look a little bit better and where i am at the moment, we are quite safe here. In other people have had fire impacting their properties but it all seems that perhaps we have not lost any houses in this township at this stage. What is the view of the australian people you speak to about Scott Morrison going off on holiday to hawaii and then having to come back somewhat sheepishly . Look, ithink then having to come back somewhat sheepishly . Look, i think it then having to come back somewhat sheepishly . Look, ithink it depends on your political persuasion but it is not a good look to be parading around ina is not a good look to be parading around in a flower necklace in hawaii as the country burns. It is a very poor look. I think one of the things australians want most at this time is some leadership, especially from the political class, and we are not getting it. Perhaps a lot of disappointment and perhaps it is on party lines but in the Blue Mountains where i live, you would have to say a vast majority of people would be very disappointed with this performance at this point. Only 26 hours ago you were told to evacuate. They are concerned now that the weeds could shift and be under threat again . Wins. That the weeds could shift and be under threat again . Wins. We have been told to evacuate three times already. The automatic phone calls sent to everyones fungal and electronic Text Messages to mobiles. We have had those three times and the most recent one was at 3am this morning. The concern about winds is the main concern. The fire picks up in the main direction and then die back down as the weather changes. That is the most frustrating thing because you just do not know fire is going to pop up. We know generally where it is but specifically it is quite difficult to be on high alert and it is quite tiring. We have flood the loads in the united kingdom, very different at christmas time in australia as summer is getting hotter and hotter. All these have a knock on to your Christmas Plans . Mine personally . Probably not. I plan to spend time with family in the centre of sydney so i will be leaving this house later on this week anyway and, if there is a fire around at that stage, i have prepared my house as best i can and i will let nature take its course, as they say. You are very philosophical. Kind of you to talk to us. We wish you a Merry Christmas there in blackheath. New south wales. Very relaxed about it. What will be will be. The times leads with its own exclusive story. The paper claims Tesco Christmas cards have been produced using prison labour in china. The Supermarket Chain has denied the claims and has stopped production at the factory while it investigates. The observers main story says that the home office has been accused of ignoring 11100 offers by local councils to house child refugees. The sunday telegraphs picture story is Prince George stirring christmas pudding with the queen and Princes William and charles. The royalfamily were pictured for the Royal British legions latest initiative. The same picture appears on the front of the sunday express, alongside another photo of 1966 world cup scorer Martin Peters whos died at the age of 76. The papers main story focuses on the prospects of a post brexit us uk trade deal. Maths teacher and writer, bobby seagull, willjoin us later for a full review of the papers, good morning. We had our Christmas Jumperat good morning. We had our Christmas Jumper at school. I have upped my game this year. Positive joy. That pie sign is giving me flashbacks. You are back in half an hour stops set the puzzle for us now. Do we need to write this down . |j set the puzzle for us now. Do we need to write this down . I will repeat it slowly and tweeted out. It is adapted from my book. The strictly come judging judges give a score of one ten for a couple dancing in the christmas special. One couple does an unusual christmas dance and attracts this agreement in schools. Whats is surely both give a score double that of craig. The average mean score for the dance is six overall. And bruno gives a score of nine. What was Craigs School . It is definitely doable. I tested it out on a date on friday she got correct. That how my dates work. You are on the same wavelength. Would you stipulate before you go on a date that they have to have a masters in maps . As long as they dont hate maths. Unusual dance, motsi and shirley both give as good double that of craig. Bruno gives a score of nine. What was craigs score . I think i can score of nine. What was craigs score . I think can do score of nine. What was craigs score . I think i can do this. Thank you. We will do this a little bit later. That has woken you up this morning. Im not made you feel too nauseous at the prospect of maths at this time of the morning. There is someone with a good grip of the numbers this morning. Heres Alina Jenkins with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning. Im frantically trying to do it in my head. They will need a pen and paperfor that to do it in my head. They will need a pen and paper for that one. To do it in my head. They will need a pen and paperfor that one. You have had around 25 millimetres of rain overnight. Around roundabout and engine places that dont really need it. That was a leicestershire earlier on. 18 millimetres of rain in places. Flood warnings across england. The details are on the website. A messy picture today. A breezy day across central and southern england and wales full the overnight rain is slowly starting to clear away eastwards, but quite a wet start to the day across central and eastern parts of england. Further west we are starting to see showers pushing their eastwards. Once the morning rain is out of the way from the eastern counties of england we will see spells of sunshine. Most of us will see some sunshine. Most of us will see some sunshine today. There will be showers, particularly the further west you are. Given the strength of the breeze across wales, central southern england, the showers will filter their way east, gusty winds for channel coasts and the Channel Islands. A cold day across northern scotland, wide frost here. Elsewhere highs 6 11 celsius. Overnight, variable cloud, clear spells, quite a few showers failing eastwards. They may start to merge to give a longer spell of rain across western, southern scotland, Northern Ireland, Northern England. Temperatures stood stay above freezing. Phil munday, sunshine and showers will tend to cover it. Those showers could be merging to give longer spells of rain across Northern Ireland, western and southern scotland, and into Northern England. A grey day across central, southern, and Eastern England and much of wales. We will see spells of sunshine, temperatures again 7 11 celsius. Then we are into Christmas Eve and monday night into tuesday Christmas Eve we see a frontal system tracking its way eastwards across central and southern parts of england. That will bring further rain on already saturated ground. By the time we get to Christmas Eve we are left with a legacy of cloud and some patchy rain across the midlands and Eastern England. That will be out of the way. For many dry, spells of sunshine, salesforce and scotland, wales, South West England. Quite mild across southern england, scotland, and even Northern England. The Christmas Day, a brief ridge of High Pressure keeping is mainly dry. Look at was not to push on from the south west through boxing day. Wet, windy weather and potentially some snow over the Higher Ground of wales, Northern England, and into scotland. We sum up the christmas outlook from Christmas Eve into boxing day. Briefly drier. Overnight fog and frost, could be murky in places on Christmas Day morning. Christmas day mainly dry but turning wet and windy as we go into boxing day. Maybe was no over Higher Ground in the north. Back to you. We will leave you to get your shoes and socks off and keep counting. Roger johnson has the answer already. Can you believe it. It was a good guess. You know me. Now on breakfast, private eyes editor, ian hislop, joins the bbcs media editor, amol rajan, to look back on a fascinating year of front covers, cartoons, and satire. Hello. You are everywhere. Thank you for having us in, thank you so much. How do you come up with a cover like those . This was when theresa may, do you remember her . She was around at the beginning of the year. She used to be Prime Minister. Anyway, she left and we had to think how can we pay tribute to theresa may . So i thought perhaps a blank page will be good, and so we have the theresa may memorial issue, her legacy in full. Uh, thank you. Which again seems quite cruel, but was quite funny. Do you know how each of those sell . Yeah, that was a seller. Im afraid that was popular. And nigel farage . This is great, hes always good. Partly because he always does photo opportunities, so having been accused of having a party full of fruitca kes, he does a photo opt eating a fruit cake. I mean, it is fantastic. He does the joke for us. And you sometimes jump and you sometimesjump on anniversaries. This is when boris became Prime Minister. Which many people equate with an event as unlikely as landing on the moon. And he did. There is a brilliant picture of him just going into number 10. So we did it as the moon landing souvenir issue, one small step a man and a giant leap in the dark for mankind. When you have an annual, when you have to create a year, what is your starting point . Do you think thats get the bestjokes or do you reflect the year . Id try to get the best jokes. Reflect the year . Id try to get the bestjokes. And if we have been dull about a particular subject or havent covered it well i try delivered out. We are exhaustive, but the idea is to be entertaining. You have been personally committed to trying to reverse the decline of the english cartoonist. Why have you and private eye kept up your investment in cartoons . Because people like them and it sells. No, obviously it is a much more elevated reason than that. No, i love cartoons and i think that one of the things that print can do is reproduce beautiful drawings that are funny. And the english tradition is very old and i think remarkable. So i am basically doubling the number of cartoons. And people said there are not any young cartoonists, you wont get anyone. It is funny, if you offer money, people become cartoonists. We have got a brilliant raft of young cartoonists. I mean, this is a genuine skill and a lot of people who do it really well. I mentioned politics is what we will come to. And everything to be in a state of polarisation, a genuine difficulty. Why has that happened . A delayed effect of the financial crash . I think the referendum was a question about whether you are essentially happy with the way britain is or not, whether it is too unequal or you have been left behind by the International World that has come into business, whether you would rather your life was structured different ways. And the referendum was not really about europe at all. The question people answered was a question for themselves. Fairly reasonable, but it did not have anything to do with the eu. We managed to politicise essentially a cultural divide. Which is why we have ended up in three years people shouting at each other. The last three years has furnished your covers with some very loud characters. What about satire . Has it become easier or harder when we have the stranger than life characters . I mean it does two things. One is everybody says to you satire is over now because you cannot satirise donald trump, he does it to himself. Or boris is funny. Nothing more to add. Which is not true. But you have to work harder. Because you have to find the areas where they are vulnerable, the areas where they genuinely are funny and where you can get under their skin. Obviously its incredibly flattering, we have done somejoke about donald trump which turned up in a tweet saying this was unfunny and not clever and not funny and that is the ultimate prize. And to find that boris is furious about something and thats what you want. Does he ever get in touch, hes been on your cover many times, do you think he is still cheesed off when he sees himself on the front page . I do hope so. What is your technique for dealing with people who are readily offended online . Well, im not online, which helps. How have you found that is hard to sustain . Over the course of the existence of the internet, you have two children in their 20s, what do they think with the fact that dad is not online . I have no idea. I have not looked online. No, it is very restful. I do recommend it. I could get used to that idea. Unfortunately the media may not allow me to do that. One of the things about the age which we live is the truth seems up for grabs in a way it has not been for a long time, maybe ever in the course of your career. Do you think it is fair to say these days the penalty or sanction faced by those caught lying has almost disappeared. People are getting away with lying as never before. I do think is a real problem now, the idea that fake news and that is one of the things that is why i dont put a lot of time online because i am infuriated by reasonable people who say to me, i notice you did not run that story about Hillary Clinton murdering everybody. And i said i did not run it because it is not true. And they said i read it online. And these are people who they say to you the Mainstream Media isjust full of lies. And then they believe the biggest and stupidest lie that someone in a bedroom has written up on the internet and sent out as a blog. I mean there is a real divide between the sort of supposedly scepticism, a sort of fierce refusal to believe anything you read in the normal media and then believing almost anything you read online. And this is weird and it makes it. It makes the idea of truth polluted, which we know from the history of fake news is what the original putin doctrine was and what donald trump wants, he does not want you do believe this rubbish he pumps out, he wants you to believe nothing. People watching this on bbc or listening to this via bbc podcast will think that actually the bbc is part of the problem. But there is these days if you want to go viral you say there is a conspiracy at the bbc. Why are people so keen to believe conspiracy theories about journalists . Why is trust in journalism so low . We have not distinguished ourselves the past 30 years. The phone hacking thing was not good and the enquirer was not marvellous. I mean there is a reason for people to be fully sceptical. About journalism. It is not much the same way as the expenses scandal made us very sceptical about politicians. But i believe and i have said this before that being sceptical is not the same as being cynical. It does not mean you believe in nothing but you assess value. There is really Good Journalism going on. The alternative is literally sitting at home thinking i wonder what i believe. You said in the past that you do not talk much about your voting habits but you are a democrat, you believe in democracy. Around the world, are we in in democracy. Around the world, are weina in democracy. Around the world, are we in a period of aquatic recession, a correction where things are being corrected but democracy will survive, or do you think we are in the start of a post democratic age . I dont believe that. I am on the whole quite optimistic. We are in the middle of a cult of the strongman. I think populus leaders have done democracy no favours in terms of the normal checks and bala nces terms of the normal checks and balances and this struck as and boring sets of standards and values that allow democracy. None of that is very encouraging. But, essentially, i think most periods, this is one of the good things about getting older, think this is a terrible time and british politics has never been so divisive. But i think poll tax riots, what about the latest , i think poll tax riots, what about the latest , i dont remember that being a very cohesive period in british politics. I quit match mother in law, who said to me, i have never been so worried as they are now about the world. I said you we re are now about the world. I said you were a teenager in 1939 and she said oh yes, so why was. Do think you have to keep a certain amount of perspective. In terms of the threats you have had this year, legal and otherwise, you have had many a legal letter, how does this go in terms of the threats to revenue and your familys welfare . The threats to revenue and your familys welfare . That is another thing about brexit. People must be more depressed. We have had quite a lot of very, very rich people suing. What sort of stuff . Mostly russian or thereabout about money and london. Quite a lot of that. Is there any danger these cases will end up somewhere . There any danger these cases will end up somewhere . |j there any danger these cases will end up somewhere . I have a wooden table. We will see. We survive on the favour of our readers. They pay up, that is where our money comes from. And, you know, most of our stories about unexplained wealth, you know where else is from, you dont know where theres is from. That is the difference. It is lovely. Thank you very much indeed. Hello, this is breakfast with rogerjohnson and nina warhurst. Heres a summary of todays main stories from bbc news wildfires continue to burn across parts of australia as authorities warn people its not yet safe to return to areas devastated by the flames, even where they appear to have been extinguished. The countrys Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who was criticised for going on holiday during the crisis, has said that Climate Change is a reason behind the bushfires, but said warming temperatures couldnt be connected to any single fire. The fires are expected to worsen as the hot weather continues. Dozens of pesto products are being recalled overfears they may contain traces of peanut without listing it on the label. The products, all made by sauce maker sacla, also include own brand jars of pesto from supermarkets waitrose and aldi. The machines, sold under the hotpoint and indesit brands, have been identified as potential fire hazards. Whirlpool is to begin the recall in the second week of january. But mps says the delay means customers have been severely let down. A nativity scene by banksy has appeared at a hotel in bethlehem in the west bank. Dubbed the scar of bethlehem, the work shows jesuss manger by israels separation barrier, which appears to have been pierced by a blast. The work is a collaboration between the Hotels Owners and the artist, whose described it as a modified nativity. Quite poignant. Lets catch up with this board and it is all about liverpool and yet another bit of silverware. Liverpool can officially call themselves champions of the world after they won the Club World Cup. It is the trophy if they didnt know they wanted and for the fans watching on, it was an incredible game. I watched 90 minutes and they we re game. I watched 90 minutes and they were completely on top, certainly the second half. Early in the game they were dominant but flamengo look impressive. For them it felt like medication because liverpool were beaten by flamengo in 1991. It does mean liverpool can now officially called themselves champions of the world. They beat flamengo of brazil in extra time in doha. Our reporter olly foster was there. The european champions have now gone global in what has been an incredible year forjuergen klopps side. We want to win as many trophies as possible. We have another important game coming up next week so, yes, it is all go, recovery and get going again. They question the timing of the tournament with their wish in the premier league. From the very first minute of the final, the gulf between the two sides looked very clear. Roberto firmino should have scored. His heritage was his fellow brazilians continued in the second half. That was the easy big. Bit. Diego alves was the best goalkeeper in brazilfor the season. Everyone was wondering what var was looking at in injury time. Penalty, no penalty, inside, outside the box . Lets have extra time. And it was there that liverpool found a way again. The winning groove is difficult to get out of, no matter what the continent or the competition. Thats two winners in a week for firmino. Room for another trophy tattoo. Flamengo had time to fluff an opportunity to equalise. Its a long flight to rio to wonder what might have been. So, liverpool are world champions, but its not going to change them. The priority remains exactly the same get home and resume the pursuit of the title that they really want. Olly foster, bbc news, in doha. And joining us live from qatar now is andy heaton, from the liverpool podcast the anfield wrap. Good morning. Iam good morning. I am sure it was a brilliant night. This competition, we have been talking over the last few days that maybe it means more to these south americans than the europeans but you would not have thought that looking at the celebrations. It may not mean much to the rest of england but it means a lot to us after last nights game. Flamengo where said that odd omission, they were told to come back he rose. On a mission. Liverpool didnt know they wanted to win this in the first place. |j liverpool didnt know they wanted to win this in the first place. I would not say that. Everybody wants to win it and it felt like a massive occasion. Once the final came round, it felt massive. Like a big final and once again liverpool managed to deliver under pressure. It went into extra time in the. The character of liverpool says a lot about them. Extra time in the. The character of liverpool says a lot about themm does. The intensity is our identity and thats right. Do not know how to lose at minute. It is almost a winning habit they have, whether it is the premier league or the european cup, they seem to dig it out. To be honest, they started really well, they had didnt drop after a couple of goals, they did not get a penalty because of vai, again the heads did not drop and they got through. Var. Again the heads did not drop and they got through. Vari again the heads did not drop and they got through. Var. I think you need a bit of a rest now. Plenty of celebrating you last night. Fantastic. And joy. Liverpool obviously didnt play in the premier league this weekend but they are still 10 points clear at the top, after Manchester City beat second placed leicester. Manager Pep Guardiola said Kevin De Bruyne was incredible he set up gabrieljesus for citys third goal, as they came from behind to win 3 1. They stay third but theyre just a point behind leicester now. He is an incredible fighter, the way he runs and being in the position he is free to attack. He helps a lot with his intensity. He can run. He lives close to the ball and that makes him an exceptional player. Today was one of the best performance he has played in a long time. Arsenal and evertons new managers watched their sides play from the stands at goodison park. Mikel arteta officially takes charge of arsenal today. Carlo ancelotti was announced as the everton boss shortly before kick off. The match ended 0 0. Celtic beat aberdeen 2 1 to say five points clear of rangers at the top of the scottish premiership. And lyndon dykes scored a hat trick as livingston moved into the top six with an empatic a nil win over ross county. The woman of the moment in darts the queen of the palace. Fallon sherrock has done it again, beating another man to move into the third round at the pdc world championship. After victory in the first round made her the first woman to win a match in the competition, she beat the 11th seed Mensur Soljovic by three sets to one, upsetting the odds once again in front of an enthused crowd at ally pally. And none other than the tennis legend billyjean king was among those sending congratulations on social media she used the hashtag game changer. She certainly is and she is such a remarkable character. Chatting to her afterwards she said, i can do it, ican her afterwards she said, i can do it, i can win it and we will be speaking to her later in the day. While many of us might get a bit bored of the same old christmas films and tv repeats at this time of year, people with dementia can actually benefit from re watching the classics. Research by nhs england suggests it can stimulate memories and help keep the brain active lets take a look back at some of those classic tv moments. Bells ringing out from the old english spider grandmother posing a while to admire grandfather resting his nuts by the fire. A great Christmas Card to view. Mr lucas youre forgetting the ferry ducks. Fa ncy fancy spending as much as there is a. Well, it is christmas, aint it i dont know what to say. That has never. Iam. I am overwhelmed, confused,. Iam overwhelmed, confused, you get a surprise like this and you can help thinking, maybe he has them. Father christmas has been down the chimney a long time. It is not his fault. He gave the presence away, give him a drink, a piece of cake boat phil clarke he is paralytic. He does not need cake. By three oclock he is paralytic. Good night. Brings back lots of memories. Professor Alistair Burns is the nhss National Clinical director for dementia and older people hejoins us now. Wonderful looking back on those archive lives. What is the theory behind this, why is it important . We know that having dementia and having memory problems can be a very isolating experience and so at christmas time, to have the opportunity to go through and relive some of those memories by watching old programmes, it could be a series, a favourite film or a song, rings people together. Brings people together. It does not have to be at christmas, you can access these programmes all year round . That is absolutely right all the christmas is a special time because people get together and it is an opportunity for her family to meet and talk about how things have been. It isa and talk about how things have been. It is a good time if someone is concerned about the memory to have a discussion about that and talk about prevention and things like that. Lots of opportunities at this special time of year. While it is a special time of year. While it is a special time, it can also be quite overwhelming for people with dementia. It is a busy time and it can be intimidating in a number of ways. A number of things we can do to make christmas enjoyable for everybody. What would they be specifically, if there is someone in yourfamily specifically, if there is someone in your family with dementia and you wa nt to your family with dementia and you want to make christmas a special as you can for everyone . Everyone with dementia is an individual so it is not one size fits all. Take more time. We talked about watching films, making sure people are involved in putting up the decorations. Ratherthan involved in putting up the decorations. Rather than going into a room and having all the decorations there, making sure there a little pieces everywhere. It is that connected ness which is important. What is it about unlocking memories that can help them . We know that in dimension, it tends to be recent memories that are effective. Patients often say they can remember something that has happened years ago but not recently so happened years ago but not recently so bringing back that memory is important. The other thing is emotional memory, memory of how we feel, is much stronger than remembering individual events so the emotion that comes with a particular film or song is showing that memory is so important. Even when i hear the sound of music, it makes me feel warm and evoking those memories. Those memories are so important. It is good to bring back those memories and be connect did. You are back later. Thank you very much. Details of organisations offering information and support with dementia are available at bbc. Co. More rain overnight on already saturated ground. Parts of dorset, hampshire, and sussex have had posted 25 millimetres, another inch. That was leicestershi re millimetres, another inch. That was leicestershire yesterday. Lots of places with plenty of surface water. Not as many Flood Warnings at this time last year. 91 across england. The details are on our website. A really messy picture today. Overnight rain clear. A brisk wind, gusty winds across the channel close and the Channel Islands and parts of south wales. We have overnight ranger clear. It is becoming patchy about gradually clearing away from the midlands, Eastern England over the midlands, Eastern England over the next few hours. Behind that we will see spells of sunshine. Joe was already piling into South West England, Northern Ireland, and across western scotland. That process will continue through the day. Not so many showers across to the further east. Many will see spells of sunshine. Showers could be heavy, thundery, maybe even hail where we get them. Cold across the far north of scotland. Widespread frost. Elsewhere 7 11 celsius. Not much change overnight. Further showers. A longer spell of rain across western south west scotland, Northern Ireland, north west england, across the eastern side of scotla nd england, across the eastern side of scotland we can see frosts, temperatures below zero. Elsewhere they will say above freezing. For tomorrow, many places largely dry. Away from Northern Ireland, Western Isles of scotland, and Northern England. Here some showers merging to give longer spells of rain stop to give longer spells of rain stop to the north and south we will see the best of the sunshine. Temperatures 10 11 celsius across the southern half of the uk, 5 eight celsius further north. Monday night come into Christmas Eve, a frontal system of the atlantic. That will deliver more rain across parts of south wales, central and southern england again falling onto saturated ground. Not out of the flood risk just yet. As we go through Christmas Eve, the band of rain becomes patcher as it moves north and east words. For many largely dry. Showers across Western Areas of scotland, wales, and england. Temperatures 6 11 celsius. For Christmas Day we have a ridge of High Pressure. Christmas day should be mainly dry, perhaps with frost and fog stop later on Christmas Day into boxing day we see an area of low pressure arriving from the atlantic. Wet and windy through boxing day. Possibly snow over the hills of north wales, Northern England, and into southern scotland. The christmas outlook, briefly real, particularly for Christmas Day, could see overnight fog and frost with poor visibility. Later on Christmas Day into boxing day things turn wetter and windier and for some Northern Hills there is the chance we could see a bit of snow. Back to you. So a White Christmas as possible, but only a few. Its time now for click. Oh Christmas Tree. Your leaves are so unchanging. You have finally arrived, welcome. The gang is all here, you are too, so welcome to clickmas 2019 forced merriment and pretend food, just like last year. Do we have a festive feast of tech treats for you . Yes we do, and first up, it will be lara, Merry Christmas. Merry christmas. Whenever people say you should never work with animals or kids, i think clearly they have not worked with tech because it goes well occasionally, doesnt it . This week, i havent just worked with tech, i worked with a dog at the same time. Take a look at this. Meet rusty, the tech savvy puppy familiar with being caught on camera and provided with smart phone triggered treats, via this gadget, already in his home. One of the first things we bought, perhaps before he actually came home with us was the furbo, which films him all the time, tells you when hes barking, tells you when hes whining, and if you want to give him a bit of a treat, you can click the treat release button and then he gets lots of treats sent to him. Want to test some gadgets . I take it thats a yes. Today, hes my furry glamorous assistant, getting his teeth into testing tech. The rechargeable wicked ball moves vibrates and changes colour according to activity level while playing. Its developed to encourage attraction and response. I do worry a bit when he picks it up in his teeth and it is vibrating in his teeth. Gps trackers for dogs have been around for a while, but they are getting smaller and lighter. Thejoibit is water resistant and does better on battery life than some of its competitors, and also has a geosense function where you can get an alert if your pet pooch goes further than it should, but how useful did camilla find it . Its great that its a gps tractor, very small, but it is just a gps tracker, and i would have loved to have some Activity Tracker with it, but it is very accurate and seems to have been correct every time i have checked. I would not find it overly useful because i know where he is most of the time. In the case of your dog getting stolen and they are wearing it, that would be extremely useful. Being able to track our animals has stepped up a level. Now, you can also track their behaviour as well as their activity, so you can see how the two things correlate. Beautifully behaved of course, arent you . The animo pet activity and Behaviour Tracker logs a doggys step count and sleep, as well as alerting its own as to how much barking, shaking or scratching is going on. Ok, a calm moment, but there doesnt seem to be any lack of activity today, although you do need to collect at least a weeks worth of data to start to see anything meaningful. The negatives, though, are you have to keep it on at night time, and i personally dont like keeping a collar on rusty at night time, i dont think it is particularly safe. So depending on a dog and its owners lifestyles, it seems that different gadgets would be used. But one thing that is for certain is that before i film anything like this again, i think i need a spot of human training. I will play with this with you if you let me hold onto it. That was lara with the dogs, i guess the only thing you need to be thankful for is it wasnt cat. Maybe next year . Thats true. Christmas is all about getting together with friends and family. I dont know about you lot, but i kind of feel like were family by now. Pretty much. Weve known each other an awful long time. Awful we are dysfunctional, we bicker, but we have seen each other through some ups and downs, some good times and bad times, and a few months ago, one member of the click family got some bad news. Lj, tell us about it. It was me. I got diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few months back. Not the most fun ive had. However, chemotherapy has some surprising bits of technology involved, and i thought why not demystify it and give people a chance to see what actually happens. Ive got tea, an ipad, colouring pencils, charging cable, keyboard, two kinds of drink, headphones. I think thats most things. This is my eighth chemo treatment out of ten, i am ready to rock now. Everything starts with tablets, flurazopan is to help to deal with the pain of the cap, because its very, very, very, very cold. Bottoms up. Lunch menu. Today i will have what i always have. This is where my port has been implanted. Its a fast track tube under my skin that connects directly to my heart, allowing nurses to administer drugs really easily. Like plugging in a phone charger. As a piano player, i really didnt want to have any catheters in my hands or in my arms, because the chemo treatment is quite toxic, so when i found out you could get a port fitted and everything goes on here, i dont have to hunt around for a vein, its a massively relief. I didnt feel a thing now this is in, thats it, everything goes in and out of the port. Before i started chemo, i was really scared, and i was also uninformed about the actual practicalities of it, the ins and outs of it, what to expect. Like wearing a cold cap. Chemo kills any rapidly dividing cells, including hair, so lowering blood circulation to my scalp can help keep my hair on. Imagine eating the coldest ice cream in the world for about an hour and a half, and that gives you a good idea. Off comes the wig. There we go. Au naturel, albeit with quite a lot of make up. Some patients keep more than others, ive have been quite lucky. Tepid water is applied, and this is to help the conductivity of the cold cap, and if you are have even one treatment without the cap on, you cannot do it, and your hair will come out. It has to fit very snugly. I always had a theory that wearing a cold cap would make my brain really fast, like superconducting, but it is completely the opposite. I am unable to do much concentrating. Bring on the winter this is the painful pit. If i can get through this, then we are all good. So i have various things to keep me busy, things that i find really enjoyable are watching mindless tv, and doing Flight Simulator practice. I have always wanted to learn to fly a plane, so why not do it now . Slowly bring the nose up. There we go. This is really taxing with the cap on. I can do it with no problem without the cap on. I cannot actually land the plane while i have the treatment done. I have crashed every time. Iam i am getting cold. I am slightly impaired at this point, but colouring in clouds, that i can do. I have been using apps like this one, procreate, masterclass, and the explained sim during the treatment but i have also been recording my data to show oncologists what my body has been up to. I record what the data shows like blood pressure, and collect data myself like my resting heart rate and body temperature. Three days after treatment i go up a few degrees. Its really useful. I can then go to the doctor and show them physical evidence of what my body has been doing. Its completely frozen solid now. Sometimes there is ice in there. I cant remember anything any more. After a few hours of iv and a cold head, i am nearly done for another week. Thank you so much. So thats it, thats chemo treatment in a nutshell. Lots of different iv drugs, cool cap, port and now hospital lunch. That was absolutely fascinating. Really brave, thank you. I had no idea about what goes on. This is exactly why i did it because it feels like an opportunity to just lift the lid on a single word and just maybe give people who are about to go through this the chance to understand a bit more before going into it and then it is not a whole lot of surreal surprises, one after another, which is what it was like for me. Trust you to find all the technology you could during the procedure. Yes, give me everything. You really know your way around social media, and i wonder whether media has been a help, hindrance, whether it has contributed at all to your experience. I considered for such a long time, do i share this online or do i not . And i decided to share it because im not the only person going through this, so many people are. The response i had was overwhelmingly good, so many people shared their stories with me, and it feels like together, we are stronger. I am really glad i shared. Lj rich everyone. Oh my gosh, thanks thats it for the shortcut. The full length is up and iplayer right now. If you would like to get in touch with us, please do, we live on social media, youtube, facebook, instagram, twitter at bbc click. He was looking up to be social media over the holidays . All right, good luck with that. In the meantime, if anybody, Merry Christmas. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with rogerjohnson and nina warhurst. Our headlines today wild fires in three australian states continue to cause devastation, as the countrys Prime Minister is forced to apologise for holidaying in hawaii during the crisis. Tributes are paid to the world cup winner and west ham legend, Martin Peters, whos died at the age of 76. Well speak to two of his former team mates. Liverpool are the world champions. They win the Club World Cup for the first time in their history becoming the first english side to complete the International Treble. And the queen of the palace does it again Fallon Sherrock causes another upset at the world darts championship. We have had more rain on already saturated ground. Plenty of Flood Warning in place. Mist and fog around as well. Essentially, a day of sunshine and showers for most of us. Of sunshine and showers for most of us. All the details in the next half hour. Our sydney correspondent, Shaimaa Khaliljoined us earlier from balmoral in New South Wales. Balmoral has been one of the worst hit villages from saturdays fires and many people have been told it is still extremely dangerous for them to come back and you can see why. Just behind me, look, the fires are still going on some of those trees. Still blazing, still smouldering, smoke all around us. The roads have been closed here. Firefighters have been telling people they cannot get in and out of the area just yet. All around us, you canjust see the extent of the devastation. The smoke, the smouldering trees. There is a real danger as well of the tree trunks and branches cracking and opening. You can hear them crackling in the background. This is very much still an emergency situation. The community are quite in shock. Some saying that they are not allowed back and do not know what is happening. For some of them, they may not have anything to come back to given the destruction. I want to show you Something Else really quickly, just to tell you how unpredictable and random it is. Some of the houses are still intact and the reason for that is because the direction of the wind has been making this very difficult. It almost jumps from one place to another. While this area around me has been raised to the ground, some of the houses are still standing. Some houses completely destroyed and others are still intact and many people worried about what is going to happen next, given we are still at the beginning of summer and australia is bracing itself for a brutal, brutal summer head with raising temperatures. Sir geoff hurst has led the tributes to his World Cup Winning Team mate Martin Peters, who has died at the age of 76. Peters won 67 caps for england and played over 700 club games during his career. Our Sports Correspondent Natalie Pirks looks back at his life. His journey to world cup greatness had begun seven years earlier. Instead of following in his fathers footsteps to become a lightmerman on the river thames, west ham came calling. More than 90 Flood Warnings in place with heavy rain falls disrupting travel on one of the busiest weekend of the year. The duke of edinburgh has spent a second night in hospital in london. Hes receiving treatment for a pre existing condition after being admitted on the advice of his doctor. Simonjones is live at king edward the seventh hospital. No change . We have not had any updated statement from the palace of the night and in fact we have not heard anything formally since Prince Philip was admitted in hospital on friday. It is worth reiterating what they said back then. That said the decision was precautionary made on the recommendation of his dock. I do not think we can read too much into that silence. Doctor. We dont often hear much when the the duke is admitted to hospital. He is 88 years old and we have seen little of him in public over the past couple of yea rs in public over the past couple of years since he officially retired from carrying out royal engagements. He is to carry out some 300 engagements each year, making him one of the biggest royals. He was involved in a cloud accident in sandringham earlier in the hour but he was unscathed. We sorry at a wedding recently but nothing much else. Hope so he could return to the queen by christmas. No dramas at Buckingham Palace when the royal family got together to make christmas pudding. The queen, the prince of wales, duke of cambridge, and Prince George are seen preparing the festive treat. Its part of the Royal British legions initiative to help tackle loneliness among veterans at christmas. We arejoined by we are joined by colin hughes and Charles Byrne from the charity and from alex. What was the idea behind this . The british legion have been bringing people, family, communities together for nearly 100 years and this is a wonderful way for us to show the work we do and highlight theissue show the work we do and highlight the issue of social isolation and loneliness. Colin, you soap, you are a veteran . I did indeed. What charles said about loneliness, does that ring a bell with you . It does. We are proactive and to reach out to people. We write to them every month and send newsletters to 60 members. I have also been in contact with the soup kitchen as well. We try to reach out to people. Alex from the london studio, you were with the royal family as they were mixing that pudding. What was that like . Very surreal but a amazing to watch a family come together and enjoy themselves. Did they really get stuck in . No one is wearing a penny and the queen is holding a handbag. They were happily mixing away. Always handbag in hand. Something special about baking and the family getting involved. It is important, isnt it . Getting involved. It is important, isnt it . It is totally important and what brings the family together. The kitchen is at the heart of any home. Rather than buy a christmas pudding, get around the table and make it together, like they did. People think of the royal legion and the poppy appeal but the many vetera ns the poppy appeal but the many veterans involved in more recent conflicts, they come back and really need support readjusting . One of the great joys of this need support readjusting . One of the greatjoys of this picture and the event we had is that span of generations from her majesty the queen right through to george, shows the span of the work stop it could be children of armed forces personnel. Together to bring people together and help especially as they are transitioning back to civilian life. Do you find you are having to support young veterans . Mostly older veterans. There are younger people but we have not come across that many. It is one of those charities that attract all the people. So many regional branches across the country and the world. Our ability to reach out and find people who need help is wonderful. Some of the statistics around loneliness, half responding toa around loneliness, half responding to a survey, moving to a new area, leaving the forces in itself, is it something unique to having been in the family of the forces to then leave that behind . Isolation is an issue across society but even more so in the forces. If youre moving every two years and there is such a strong, rotary. It is tough transitioning back. After leaving the forces, for the first two years, i had about 20 jobs so it does take a long time to settle in and find that homely environment again because your friends in the army, they are your brothers and sisters and have your back. The british legion is there for everybody and they are a massive family out there to support them. Tell us about the appropriate extra ingredient in the christmas pudding . The poppy seeds. British legion is famous for the poppy british legion is famous for the poppy appeal so we put poppy seeds in the christmas pudding. Do they add an extra certain something . slight smokiness to it if you do not add too many but you can taste it definitely. I love a poppy seed. If you are going to make one, alex, probably you should have done one by now . These are going for next year. Thats the idea, it begins this year and on we go. Have a lovely christmas. Heres Alina Jenkins with a look at this mornings weather. Hello, everyone. We have had more rain overnight. Another 20 25 millimetres across parts of dorset, hampshire, and into sussex, almost an inch on already saturated ground. Because like this still around with saturated ground and Flood Warnings still in place, still in excess of 90 across england. All the details are on our websites. We have overnight rain, clearing eastwards fairly soon. A messy picture today, she was putting in from the west. Why do windy day across the southern counties of england, channel close, and the Channel Islands. This is where the rain has been falling in the last few hours. Rain becoming patcher as it works eastwards. As that clears away from using counties of england, spells of sunshine following. Further showers. These are getting going across Northern Ireland, the south west of england, and pushing initially into the west. They may get further eastwards as the day wears on. By and large the further east you are, once we lost the morning rain, there wont be close to Michel Suleiman behind. Quite a cold day across the highlands of scotland. Mine is 6. 6 overnight. Elsewhere highs of 7 11 celsius. Overnight, more showers to come, particularly across Western Areas. They could most to give a longer spell a very late in the night across Northern Ireland, western south west scotland, and into north west england. Quite a cold night across the north and east of scotland, frosty, elsewhere should say above freezing. Tomorrow, showers merging to give a longer speu showers merging to give a longer spell of rain through Northern Ireland, south of scotland, into Northern England for a time. Gradually starting to break up as the day wears on. To the north and south, fewer showers, spells of sunshine. Winds will be easing down. Temperatures on kyle wood today, 7 11 celsius. Quite cold across the highlands of scotland. That takes us into Christmas Eve, another atlantic front to deal with, putting into mainly southern counties of england as we go through monday night into tuesday, into the early hours of Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve itself we see the band of rain becoming weaker and clearing away. The most we will see some spells of sunshine on Christmas Eve, there will be further showers, across the west of scotland and South West England. Fairly mild Christmas Eve across southern counties of england, olic 7 nine celsius further north. For Christmas Day we have a brief ridge of High Pressure. Things will be drier and most will see spells of sunshine. As we go into boxing day we have another atlantic system pushing its way and, turning wetter and windier. That could perhaps deliver some snow over the Higher Ground of north wales, into Northern England, and southern scotland. To sum up the christmas outlook, briefly dry, particularly on Christmas Day. That could bring overnight fog and frost. Into boxing day things will turn wetter and windier and perhaps, is day things will turn wetter and windierand perhaps, is imagined, snow or Northern Hills. Back to you. Thank you very much. I will take the briefly dry. That will do after the last few weeks. Martin peters was one of only two englishmen who knew what it was like to score in a world cup final. His death at the age of 76 was announced yesterday, following a long battle against alzheimers disease. As his International Career was drawing to a close, Peter Shiltons was just beginning we can talk to the former england goalkeeper now. We are grateful to you joining us early this morning to talk about Martin Peters, a man who you played with, of course. Yes. Its a pleasure for me to pay tribute to martin. Not only was he a great player, he was also a gentleman, a real professional. And, you know, as you said, i started my club career at leicester city, playing against the west ham team with a be more and Martin Peters. And add had a taste of how good he was then. Bobby moore. They went and played for england and had a number of yea rs for england and had a number of years with him playing for england. He wasjust so years with him playing for england. He was just so im assuming and a lwa ys he was just so im assuming and always professional, immaculate addressed, which is a credit to him. In the game, really. Alf ramsey said he was a player who was ten years ahead of his time. For those who dont know, what did he mean by that, do you think . I think it was because, you know, he was an all round midfield player. He could do everything. He could pass, he could win the ball, but he had a great knack of timing these terrific ru ns great knack of timing these terrific runs now into the penalty box and scoring goals from a deep position, which wasnt, we said quite a bit in this day and age, but not so much in that time, in the 19605 and 19705. He did ghost in, so to speak. The great west ham team may have talked about, they have this tactic of playing the ball into the near po5t space. And then he would come in late and score a lot of goals that way. It was something they developed asa way. It was something they developed as a team and it became, you know, everybody started to do it in football, but they were the first. He was a great goalscorer as well as a midfield player. Back on the day, of course, he was the first £200,000 player. Given the attributes you have just described, it does make you wonder what on earth he would have been worth in the modern game. Very much so. It would be a ridiculous amount of money. He played in the world cup team, he was one of the best midfield players in england. And he proved that. I think he was always a bit underrated in some ways, not by the public, but just generally, because, you know, he was so quiet and unassuming. But he was so quiet and unassuming. But he scored that wonderful goal, the second one that what is in front in the world cup final. Everyone remembers the hat trick, but martin puts us in front. And he kind of gets a little bit lost in the fact that geoff scored a hat trick to what your timing is perfect. As you have been saying that, dont know if you can see that, but were that goal as you described. An amazing feeling for him. He said it was like being struck by a bolt of lightning, the feeling of scoring that goal. It must have been. It wasnt an easy finish. It was a half volley. It was a bit ofa finish. It was a half volley. It was a bit of a surprise because the german defender, you know, made a little bit of a hash of the clea ra nce, little bit of a hash of the clearance, he was off balance. The ball looped up and all of a sudden the goal is right in front of martin and he has to execute that half volley with pace and power and he did it exactly. But as you can see, in this day and age they would probably run to the corner flag and do somersaults and all sorts, but martin just do somersaults and all sorts, but martinjust ran do somersaults and all sorts, but martin just ran off with his arms in the airand was martin just ran off with his arms in the air and was mobbed by his colleagues. It was a very important goal. Although germany equalised in the last kick of the game, as he said in an interview, they would have lost 2 1. A very important goal and a great finish. It is a reminder to us all now, of course, this team who remain unique in english would all, with alan ball who was the first to die. Sorry, bobby moore was the first to die, gordon banks more recently, there are five of them now who have gone. And slowly but surely it is becoming history. Yes. It will never be forgotten, obviously, but it is sad to see. Recently gordon went and i was very upset about that. But now martin has gone. And as said, nass as i said was somebody id made greatly as a person and a player. It is sad to see. It will be a little while now before another one goes, hopefully. It isa before another one goes, hopefully. It is a very sad time, really. |j know martin has not been very well the last few years, especially recently, but it is always a shock when they do finally go and you realise that they are not going to be around anymore. Peter, we wish you the best for christmas and a grateful to you for taking the time to talk to us. Our thoughts are with you and the rest of Martin Peters family and friends. Peter shilton talking to oslo from his home this morning. It is so true. That is almost the forgotten goal. Martin peters was an integral part of that amazing day. Not an easy goal either. Youre watching breakfast from bbc news, its time now for a look at the newspapers. Lets look at the front pages. The times leads with its own exclusive story. The paper claims Tesco Christmas cards have been produced using prison labour in china. The Supermarket Chain has denied the claims and has stopped production at the factory while it investigates. The observers main story says that the home office has been accused of ignoring 1,400 offers by local councils to house child refugees. Maths teacher and writer bobby seagull is here to tell us whats caught his eye. Now, you set us a maths quiz at about ten past six. We will wait until the end to give away the answer. Roger got it pretty quickly. Roger is good. A lot of people got it this morning. We have been talking to Peter Shilton about Martin Peters, lots of reflection. That was announced about five oclock yesterday afternoon. Lots in the papers, including the mail on sunday. 11 players in that first team. We had the passing of ray wilson last year, gordon banks this year, he did that magnificent save against palais. As a west ham fan there is a poignant story pele. They are still iconic figures. Next year hopefully we will have all new heroes. The Championship Finals are in wembley. We could have the likes of moore hurst and peters. As you mentioned, those three west ham players, we saw the picture, they we re players, we saw the picture, they were so integral into that amazing day, that amazing tournament. We have won a welcome, west ham won a welcome. A reference to how he celebrated, a couple with his wife. That is what Peter Shilton was saying. He was a real gentleman. Schools lock up pupils flippers phones for holidays. Are they allowed to do this . This is a volu nta ry allowed to do this . This is a voluntary steen pupils peoples phones. You can leave these items at school, one of these is the mikayla community school. The school is dubbed as the stricter school in britain and very traditional. The results this year, gcse results were phenomenal. The most telling thing, the big tech bosses like mark zuckerberg, he wrote a letter to his unborn letter and it says one day you will be older and you will be busy, so i hope you take the time to smell flowers. He will restrict use of technology with his own child and he is ahead of facebook. That tells you something. For parents it is really tricky to know where sweet spot is where you make sure they up to date with technology, because it is the way things are now, but not to overindulge them. It is the balance. We live in a world where we are more connected than ever, but we are more connected than ever, but we are always doing things virtually never having face to face contact. This is an interesting one. They will show you the front page and then hold up the inside bit. Where is this from . The sunday observer. Which Christmas Movie are you is the question. It is a psychological look into what you say. This is the inside bit where they talk about the different films. Go on. The type of christmas formula it reveals a lot about your personality. The first thing you need to put on is that im upset that home alone to is not on there. What does that say about you . That iconic moment. Kevin in new york is my all time number one. That iconic moment. Kevin in new york is my alltime number one. Is it . It is mary poppins to me. My second favourite is. Love actually. But her apparently you are an old romantic. Laughter. Excellent. It is fascinating. And a p pa re ntly excellent. It is fascinating. And apparently die hard. If that is your favourite christmas film you dont actually believe you are trying to be controversial. Trying to be macho. And its a wonderful life, it is actual quite sinister. These are attempting suicide. Is one of those films people want to say is their favourite. And those films people want to say is theirfavourite. And people always say jane austin or Charles Dickens favourite novelist, but probably isnt. Favourite novelist, but probably isnt. It is all right in the last five minutes. We ended up with a dvd of the santa claus. With a letter eon of the santa claus. With a letter e on the end. Let us talk about this because you set for us an hour ago. Reminders of the question. A puzzle based on my book. Strictly come dancing christmas special. Motsi and shirley both give a score double that of craig. The average mean score for the dance is sex. And bruno gives a score of nine. What was craigs score . Six. Bruno gives a score of nine. What was craigs score . Six. I will tell you how i did it. You said the total was 26, so the mean was six. My total was 26, so the mean was six. My time is that by four. The total number was 24. Bruno gave nine, so that left 15. Clever people than me would have done some sort of an equation. But id just kind of worked it out that it is two sixes for motsi and shirley and craigs half is three, six and six is. It is one of those things you can do by trial and abridgement or you can set up trial and abridgement or you can set up algebra. You could say that craigs score is c. That should make it five c. The remaining score of 15. That is the mathematician way of doing it. You still got it. I say to students, as long as you get that the method is not as important. The key is having a process. My method is or is go with go with my number and if it is wrong. You are going to set us another one. Are you going to set us another one. Are you going to tweet this out as well . Santa claus is travelling to attend bbc fours christmas lecture on boxing day. Mrs claus travels separately. Sa nta cla us day. Mrs claus travels separately. Not long after, although flamengo had their chances to equalise, not long after liverpool were holding that precious trophy aloft. They have been runners up in its various guises down the years and lost to flamengo backin down the years and lost to flamengo back in 1981 and it was called the intercontinental cup between the europeans and south american champions. With a game in hand. This is not taken anything away from that and they hope it has been a fantastic break for them and some words from the liverpool manager about how he feels leaving doha. Game after game after game they really showed the desire to win the next game, showed the desire to win the next challenge. Now i can say that it the next challenge. Now i can say thatitis the next challenge. Now i can say that it is outstanding. Absolutely sensational. I am so proud of the boys. It could not be better. Sensational. I am so proud of the boys. It could not be battenm sensational. I am so proud of the boys. It could not be better. It was an incredible, incredible performance. Flamengo what a very good team but liverpool proved they we re good team but liverpool proved they were just good team but liverpool proved they werejust a good team but liverpool proved they were just a little bit better and we will see how much better they can be over the next few months to see if they can drive home that premier league title. After victory in the first round made her the first woman to win a match in the competition, she beat the 11th seed Mensur Soljovic by three sets to one. Afterwards she said, i have beaten two of the best players in the world. If that doesnt show that women can play darts, i dont know what does. Dubois caught him with a powerful right hook in the second round that extends his winning streak to 14, as the hype continues to build, for a shot at one of the main heavyweight belts next year. Not a bad christmas present. A bit heavy to wrap though. Never thought about that. Do you like sprouts . Maybe with cranberry sauce . Sprouts for me are all about the next day. A well known tv chef mixes them with bits of bacon and lost the source and they are delicious. Do they go in the think that you should like them but dont. In the think that you should like them but dont. A bit like in the think that you should like them but dont. A bit like my mince pies and gingerbread man. With the Festive Season in full swing, millions of sprouts will be eaten across britain over the next few days, with supermarkets expecting a 500 increase in sales. The bitter tasting vegetable, which often divides opinions, could be set to get even more popular due to new varieties being grown, as sam fenwick reports. As you took into your christmas dinner, it is likely that sprouts on your plate would have been on here in the scottish border. The cool north sea went make for ideal conditions. It has been a good harvest. The looking very healthy. They are standing up and looking good. Sprouts are really good for you, they have four times more vitamin cthan you, they have four times more vitamin c than oranges but they are not the favourite vegetable for many. I did not like sprouts. Sprouts are tasty. I have never tried sprouts. Nope, not my thing stop but there is Something Special going on in these scottish feels and it might change your opinion of the humble sprouts. It is more of a sweeter, tasting sprout. It will not have to bitterness. Sales increased by 500 at christmas. Tesco alone will sell 90 million of them. How many sprouts do you feel a day . 40 buskers, half a ton a day. That is a lot. Yes, it is a lot. I am one of those people that doesnt really like sprouts. I may have three on my plate at christmas dinner and try hide them under a piece of turkey but because i am not cooking them directly, apparently. Ian, what am i doing wrong . I think youre cooking them too long. Putting them on the ball in october is too soon . Them too long. Putting them on the ball in october is too 500mm them too long. Putting them on the ball in october is too soon . It is the last thing you should cook. They only take a few minutes and they stay lovely in green and taste really, really nice. Three minutes and they are ready now. You can have any size you like. It is hot though. It is very hot. Laughter. They taste very green. Correct. This christmas maybe it is time we gave sprouts a second chance. That is very good. There we go. Do you like sprouts . |j there we go. Do you like sprouts . absolutely there we go. Do you like sprouts . a bsolutely love there we go. Do you like sprouts . absolutely love them. Finish them off with butter and pancetta. Oh. Really nice, really tasty. So long as they are well cooked, if they are under cooked they dont as well. That is what the guy said, dont cook them for so long. But it is the pa ncetta, cook them for so long. But it is the pancetta, nina. I know, i know. There is no link from sprouts to weather. We have had more rain overnight. Another 25 and 25 millimetres across some southern counties of england on top of the rain we have already had. Flood warnings are still in place. Not as many as this time yesterday but over 90 across england. All the details are on the website. This is the Bigger Picture for today. We have overnight rain clearing eastwards, piling in behind will be showers and sunshine. Some strong winds across panel coasts and across the Channel Islands where we have gusts over at 55 mph. This is where the rain has been falling in the last few hours, starting to clear away from eating counties in the next few hours. Behind that we will all see some Sunshine Beach was starting to develop across South West England into south wales, Northern Ireland, and it will continue to push their way further eastwards as the day wears on. Could be heavy, thundery, may be hailstones. By and large once we have lost the morning rain from eating counties should be drier with spells of sunshine. 9 11 celsius across central and southern england, more like 6 nine further north, some parts of the highlands not getting much above two or three celsius. Little change overnight, clear spells, variable amounts of cloud, she was putting in from the west, merging to give more rain across north west england and south west scotland and Northern Ireland. Most of us are frost free away from the north and east of scotland. Though showers merging to give longer was arranged through Northern Ireland, Northern England, and into south of scotland through tomorrow. More showery with time. To the north and south of this, drier, some good spells of sunshine. A much friday across much of england and wales. 11 celsius the high. Still typically 7 nine for most of us. That then takes us into Christmas Eve. As we go through monday night into the early hours of Christmas Eve morning, another atlantic system pushing eastwards. That will deliver more rain, initially across southern counties of england and into south wales and then through Christmas Eve morning attracts north and eastwards. Most of us in becoming dry on Christmas Eve. A few showers filtering down across Western Areas of the uk. 6 filtering down across Western Areas of the uk. 611 filtering down across Western Areas of the uk. 6 11 celsius will be the temperature on Christmas Eve. Maybe 12 across South West England. On Christmas Day it is looking drier with a ridge of High Pressure, but then another system pales in from then another system pales in from the atlantic as we go into boxing day, delivering wetter, windier conditions and potentially a bit of snow over the highest ground of north wales into Northern England and parts of scotland. Just to sum up and parts of scotland. Just to sum up the christmas outlook, briefly dry, particularly on Christmas Day, we could see some frost and fog lingering, and later on Christmas Day into boxing day thinks so wetter and windier. Maybe was no of the high ground of the north. Back to you. Technically, not to put you on the spot, you could only have a White Christmas if a flake of snow fell on the weather place. Have they changed . There has to bejust fell on the weather place. Have they changed . There has to be just a fla ke changed . There has to be just a flake of snow falling on a weather station on Christmas Day for it to bea station on Christmas Day for it to be a White Christmas. If you see some on boxing day, although we are getting so over the christmas period, it would not be a White Christmas. All right. The worst of christmases late on Christmas Day, boxing day when you are cosy anyway. That makes us think of warmer climes. Now on breakfast its time for the travel show. Hello and welcome to this, the last travel show of 2019, so what a better time to take a look back on the past year on the programme . Heres a taste of whats coming up. Its incredible. Oh, my days that was completely insane. Bets kick off with a trip that mike made over to california back in may. We told him that all he would need was a taste for adventure and a head for heights. Heres what happened. Here in western california, there are complex beings that have lived for over a millennium. Redwood trees have become an icon of this state. But some fear that our changing climate might threaten their survival. So i have come to the most southern tip of their range where change could hit the hardest to join a scientist who has been working here to try to find some answers. Its absolutely amazing being out in the forest, i just love it, listening to the birds and watching the sun move through the canopy, its beautiful. Today, we will be climbing this. So these are coast redwoods. They are the tallest tree species in the world, reaching currently about 380 feet tall is the tallest ones. They are incredibly tough and resilient, really important ecologically and they are iconic. So i have been here, trying to get a better understanding of how they are responding to Climate Change, and how they might respond to future Climate Change. And how are they responding to Climate Change . As the Climate Changes, temperatures are increasing, its drying things out as temperatures get warmer, and thats a big, big consideration for these particular trees because they need so much water, its affecting their water balance and their ability to transport more water to the tops of the trees. But now, its time to get to work. Groans. There we go. So first, we need a sample of the trees core. This is the halfway mark there, and then when you get to the ground, well be able to pull that spoon out with the core on it. And the hidden secrets beneath this bark will be ours yes the knowledge will be ours earlier on, anthony showed me some of those secrets this tree had already revealed. And so, wow these are the rings here . Yeah, each one of those an annual ring, one years worth of growth you can see here. So it only grows a couple of millimetres each year . Yeah, and sometimes less than a millimetre a year, depending on how the conditions are. We are back hundreds of years right now . Once we polish this up and sand it and get a better view of the rings, you know, this is there could be 100, 200, 300,400,500, 600, 700 maybe years here. Wow. So this section up here hasnt seen sunlight for 600, 700 years. Yeah. Its an amazing archive. All right, so i have one end of the tape measure. We are doing the circumference measurement. Yep, yep. So wrap it all the way around that underneath this tubing that. So we are at 7. 84 metres circumference. Thats a big tree it is a big tree. To the top this redwood stands at over 70 metres tall. Climbing redwoods is forbidden in most places, but in this reserve, we have special permission and what a privilege it is 0k. 40 metres. I cannot believe how incredible it is up here. Its incredible up here. As we inched upwards, i am faced with more scorched bark. Anthony told me that wildfires are another threat that these trees are increasingly facing in the modern world. Birds nest. I dont think there is anybody home, though. With anthony already at the top collecting samples, i make my final push upwards. This view. Is definitely one of the wildest, most incredible views i have seen in my entire life. I cant believe we are 71 metres off the ground right now. Condors get this view. Condors, and us. Its incredible. This is 700 years old which is before the colonisation of america, before taj mahal, before machu pichu. It makes you feel like a speck of sand in the sandbox. Like, insignificant. Yeah, its a pretty humbling experience, isnt it . If the Climate Change experience dries things sufficiently, then they might start to feel some impacts, they might not grow as well, may not get as tall, and they might, in the future, even might die back, and that is what were trying to find out. Do i feel the tree shaking a little bit . Yeah, its waving. Just a normal thing, i am assuming . Yeah. Time something with a bit more horsepower now, and in march, adam made his first ever visit to dubai. Lets just say he got to travel style, very, very quickly. Good to see you. Look at this jump in. All set . Lets do it everywhere we look, i mean, im just seeing. We have a rolls royce going past here, mercs, that is standard. Supercars everywhere. What is it with dubai . Why are they so in love with their superca rs here . There are a couple of different reasons. One is to show off. As much as no one wants to admit it, people do like showing off. Then there are the most amazing driving roads in the uae. Dannys ninth degree group of local supercar owners hold regular track days and events here. And they even let you hire one of the top of the range models, so that you can get behind the wheel for a few hours, at least. We are going to go for a spin in this car, and this car is the real deal. Its almost £1 million worth of raw, brutal, unadulterated power. Dan, lets do this, man lets go. Oh, yes screams. Oh, my days laughs. Now, if you are a fan of winter sports, you are going to love this next one, because back in march, christa headed to latvia to try her hand on one of the very few professional bobsleigh tracks that are open to tourists, and it was quite a ride. Welcome to siguldas bobsleigh track, one of the very few in the world where tourists can get the same adrenaline rush as professional racers. We are about to set off, 100 kilometres down a very icy slope. But luckily, ive got an expert pilot, so fingers crossed that it goes very smoothly. Apart from the pilots steering the bobsleigh from the front, a team also includes pushers and a brake man. But tourists get it easy. Theyjust need to duck in and hold very tight this track is almost 1500 metres long and you need a pretty strong stomach to manage its 16 curves. Woo chuckles. Oh, man woo i think that is one of the most intense experiences of my entire life. That was like being in a very, very active, very cold tunnel dryer for a minute and a half. Another winter sport that can take your breath away is this the skeleton. Imagine a luge with no brakes or steering aid that you ride headfirst. I dont think im ready to try one of the full blown skeletons, but there is a tourist version available that is a little bit more my speed. Wish me luck. Its called a frog, and for this one, theres no crew to make me feel safe. Woo oh, my goodness oh, god laughter. Oh, god how was it . So cool i could go again right now, lets go. Good morning, welcome to breakfast with rogerjohnson and nina warhurst. Our headlines today wild fires in three australian states continue to cause devastation, as the countrys Prime Minister is forced to apologise for holidaying in hawaii during the crisis. Tributes are paid to the world cup winner and west ham legend Martin Peters, whos died at the age of 76. Well speak to two of his former team mates. Liverpool are the world champions. They win the Club World Cup for the first time in their history, becoming the first english side to complete the International Treble. And the queen of the palace does it again. Fallon sherrock causes another upset at the world darts championship. Good morning, we have had more rain on already saturated ground overnight. Plenty of Flood Warning still in place, also is a mist and fog around this morning. The most of us fog around this morning. The most of us today is a day of sunshine and showers. All the detail on that in the next half an hour. Its sunday the 22nd of december. Our top story. The authorities in australia are warning people its still not safe to return to areas devastated by wild fires even where the flames appear to have been extinguished. The countrys Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, who was criticised for going on holiday during the crisis, has now conceded that Climate Change could have contributed to the fires. Our sydney correspondent, Shaimaa Khalil, joined us earlier from balmoral in New South Wales. Good morning, yes, bow moral has been one of the worst hit villages from a saturdays fires. As you said, many people have been told it is still extremely dangerous for them to come back. You can see why. Just behind me there, the fires are still going on some of those trees. Look at that victory, still blazing, still smouldering, smoke all around us. The roads here have been closed, firefighters have been telling people they cant get in and out of the area just yet. All around us, you can just see the extent of the devastation. Smoke, the smouldering trees, there is a real danger as well of those tree trunks and branches cracking and opening. You can hear them crackling in the background. This is very much still an emergency situation. The community here are quite in shock. We have spoken to some of them who say, look, we are not allowed back. We dont know what has happened, and to some of them, they might not have anything to come back to, given the destruction that has happened here. I want to show Something Else. Just to show you how unpredictable and random it is, if you look in the distance, some of the houses are actually still intact. The reason thatis actually still intact. The reason that is because the direction of the wind has been making us very difficult. It almost just jumps from one place to another, so while this area around me has been raised to the ground, some of the houses has been left intact. Many people are quite worried about what is going to happen next, given that we are still at the beginning of summer and australia is bracing itself for a brutal summer ahead, with rising temperatures. Sir geoff hurst has led the tributes to his World Cup Winning Team mate Martin Peters, who has died at the age of 76. Peters won 67 caps for england and played over 700 club games during his career. Our Sports Correspondent Natalie Pirks looks back at his life. 97,000 fans gave them the biggest roar of the competition. With all eyes on hurst, the danger from Martin Peters went unnoticed. And a chance on goal peters Little Wonder they called him the ghost. Theres Martin Peters, the man who scored the goal which could well win the world cup for england. His journey to world cup greatness had begun seven years earlier. Instead of following in his fathers footsteps to become a lightmerman on the river thames, west ham came calling. Tesco says its suspended production at a factory in china which produces Christmas Cards for the retailer, following allegations of forced prison labour. The sunday times claims a six Year Old Girl from south london found a handwritten message inside a box of cards, claiming that foreign nationals were being made to work in a jail in shanghai against their will. In a statement tesco told the bbc they were shocked at the allegation and would never allow prison labour in their supply chain. More than 90 Flood Warnings are in place across the south, the midlands, and the east of england, because of another night of heavy rain. A tornado has swept through parts of surrey, damaging cars and houses and ripping up trees. This report from james ohara. This is what days of relentless rain falling on to already saturated ground looks like. More than 100 mobile homes had to be evacuated at a caravan park in yalding in kent. Residents are unlikely to be able to return home for several days. In pulborough in west sussex, the sand bags are being put to the test. As the river rises, these vehicles didnt stand a chance. We have got more rain on sunday, and more rain on monday as well, so it is not going to get any better. I think the key thing here is it is not going to get to the severe situation, where we have got a significant number of properties. It is going to remain high until christmas, but after that we have got a dry period, so hopefully things will come down then. But this was the sight that greeted motorists near the m25 near chertsey in surrey. A tornado sucking up things from the ground and throwing them around. It left a trail of damage to these houses. Residents say they couldnt believe what they were seeing. With christmas approaching, millions of people will be taking to the roads in the coming days. They are set to endure what police are calling miserable driving conditions, hoping theirjourneys dont end like this. James ohara, bbc news. Hes receiving treatment for a pre existing condition, after being admitted on the advice of his doctor. Simon jones is live at king edward vii hospital. A salmon, the morning. No update, as we understand . No, nothing from the palace overnight, and in fact, we havent had anything from them formally since Prince Philip was admitted to hospital on friday. It is worth reiterating what they said back then. They said the decision to bring in here was precautionary on the advice of his doctor, and we dont think we can read too much into the silence of the palace because in previous years, when Prince Philip has been in hospital, we have had very little. There has been no ongoing commentary until he is ready to leave hospital. But there are questions and concern because of his age. And because of the fact we have seen very little of him in public in the last couple of yea rs. Him in public in the last couple of years. He has retired from official royal duties, so sightings of him are rare. He used to carry out some 300 engagements per year. He did, of course, have a nasty car accident in sandringham earlier in the air, but you emerged unscathed at that. He was seen at a wedding in windsor bucket may, but apart from that, we cannot see him to gauge his health ourselves. The royal family cannot see him to gauge his health ourselves. The royalfamily are hoping he will be well enough to leave hospital in time to spend christmas with the queen, although he did miss celebrations back in 2011 because, once again, he was in hospital having an operation to insert of a blocked coronary artery. Thank thank you very much. Buckingham palace has released new photos of four generations of the royalfamily mixing up christmas pudding. The queen, the prince of wales, duke of cambridge and Prince George are seen preparing the festive treat. Its part of the Royal British legions initiative to help tackle loneliness among veterans at christmas. Our correspondent Helena Wilkinson has more. Prince george is prepping a special christmas pudding, much to the delight of his father, grandfather and great grandmother. These photographs of the four generations of the royal family were taken in the music room at Buckingham Palace earlier this month to mark the royal legions together at christmas initiative. Its designed to support the armed forces community, including veterans, through get togethers at centres across the country. The queen has supported other royal legion events, she attended this concert on the evening before remembrance sunday this year. And other royals have been highlighting their Charity Projects this christmas. Do you do a bit of cooking with your children . Yes, i really enjoy it. Again, for them to be. The cambridges recently took part in a programme with mary berry. Prince william took her to the passage Homeless Charity which he visited with his mother, princess diana, around 30 years ago. The christmas puddings made by Prince George and his family will become the centrepiece of next years royal legion get togethers, and form part of 99 puddings that will be sent across the charitys network in the uk and commonwealth. So that is for next christmas, as you correctly pointed out. Youre watching bbc breakfast. It has just gone to 12 minutes past eight. Lets return to the story weve been bringing you about wildfires that are still burning across three australian states. Hot, dry weather and strong winds are causing the flames to spread rapidly. Our sydney correspondent Shaimaa Khalil has been to hill top close to sydney an area which has found itself on the front line. She sent this update. Im just going to try and make my way to one of the houses over there. You have to watch every step you take. I mean, there is still smoke coming out of tree trunks, still smouldering full stop watch it. And it just gets you smouldering full stop watch it. And itjust gets you right in the throat, it becomes very hard to breathe. We also have to be very careful about the trees around us. Some of them have been completely burnt out. They are still standing, but they can fall any time. Look over there. Look at that. Look at that smoke, and just beyond it, look at that devastation. Nothing has escaped those fires. Nothing escaped the flames. And the destruction is absolute. You can see why firefighters are saying it is too dangerous for people to come back to these areas. This house has been com pletely these areas. This house has been completely destroyed. I mean, you can see the remains of what used to bea can see the remains of what used to be a kitchen, cars completely out, but really, what they are afraid of now is those trees. The fact that these trees have been completely burned, and some of them have fallen off. That is the danger now, and thatis off. That is the danger now, and that is why people arent allowed back to those areas. Absolutely devastating for those affected. Joining us now from our cambridge studio is michael grubb, professor of energy and Climate Change at University College london. A very good morning to you. Just explain to us, why has this heatwave can about . Well, the fact is the planet is getting warmer, as we know. Particularly. Australia is an area that is naturally hot and arid and is having record temperatures. It does not take Rocket Science to know that under those conditions, you are going to get more devastating fires. These seem to be the most devastating fires australia has yet seen. And it only takes a slight rise in temperature for that risk to intensify . Gas, it does. Once you look at the difference between 45 and 47 degrees, which is what australia has now hit, that is actually a very big difference in the severity and extent of the size you are going to see. Also, stronger winds as well are making it even harderfor winds as well are making it even harder for the firefighters to control. In your view, can we put this specific bout down to chat to Climate Change and why . That is a lwa ys Climate Change and why . That is always an odd question to a scientist. If the planet gets hotter, which it has, which is going to get more likely if we keep on pumping co2 and more gases like Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere. The planet is going to continue to get hotter, and will do so more than the global average in australia. You can argue that this is the particular event that will be related to Climate Change or not. But it has been very clear is an u pwa rd but it has been very clear is an upward trend for years. Australia has said it is not credible to make a direct link between the fires and global warming. He has conceded it is contributed bull to volatile weather patterns, but says it is not possible to make the direct link on this occasion. He is playing around with words, isnt he . His political position, which is supported by the coal industry, is to deny that Climate Change is happening. You can argue about the semantics, but the fa ct argue about the semantics, but the fact is that Climate Change is happening. It is unambiguous, and it does make events like this more statistically likely. What hes trying to do is trying to fudge National Security for australia. 2019 will perhaps be remembered as the year that Climate Change, to onto the agenda in this country any more meaningful way than ever. Is it established enough . That is always ha rd to established enough . That is always hard tojudge, established enough . That is always hard to judge, and established enough . That is always hard tojudge, and people have to bearin hard tojudge, and people have to bear in mind what makes Climate Change politically tricky is it is a slow burning fuse, that is. There is always weather, there were always going to be years that are hotter or cooler, and then once every few yea rs, cooler, and then once every few years, you will get more extreme events. People have to understand the nature of this beast. But i think it is shifting opinion, it has changed decisively. The issue is that pretty much in the uk and europe, it is unambiguous now. People broadly understand the science and accept the reality. There are parts of the world where it is contested. But in the end, this is what will happen. Scott morrison has been. To admit this. He has seen New South Wales and other states really quite devastated. The firefighters are up in arms because there are firefighters being killed because of this. And that is changing the politics in australia, and so it should. Many thanks, michael. Further environmental pledges and all the political ma nifestos pledges and all the political manifestos this year, so we will see what happens if they dont deliver. Just going back to the royal family making christmas puddings, a couple of people have said we could at the royal legion rather than the British Royal legion rather than the British Royal legion. No offence intended. How is the weather . We have had so much rain, that more rain overnight, particularly in the southern counties of england. Lots of places like this, with the fields looking like lakes. A number of flood winning still in place. Lower than yesterday, but still in excess of 21 in england. Up to 25 millimetres in some counties in england. That is now clearing away eastwards, increasingly patchy. Behind it, some spells of sunshine, but already showers developing across South West England, south wales and Northern Ireland. This process will continue, morning rain clearing eastwards, shower starting to push on from the west, may be heavy and thundery. They will be most frequent across Western Areas, and by and large more east you are, they wont be so many showers. Ten or 11 celsius across the southern half of the uk this afternoon. More like six or 7 degrees further north, apart from the highlands, where we have had a sharp frost overnight. Clear skies, variable amounts of cloud, but also further showers piling in. Bands of rain across scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland. Here we are, starting christmas week. A good deal of sunshine for many tomorrow, away from southern scotland, Northern Ireland and Northern England. Here, quite a few showers again emerging to give a longer spell of rain. Temperatures ten or 11 degrees across central parts of england and wales. More like nine celsius that the no. As we go through monday into Christmas Eve, we have got this atla ntic Christmas Eve, we have got this atlantic system to deal with. That would deliver more rain, shifting across parts of england as we going into tuesday. Christmas eve is looking like it will gradually become more dry, with showers in the west. Christmas day is mainly looking dry and bright. Martin peters was one of only two englishmen who knew what it was like to score in a world cup final. His death at the age of 76 was announced yesterday, following a long battle against alzheimers disease. His achievements in Club Football came at west ham and spurs. Sir Trevor Brooking played alongside martin at west ham, and joins us now. Thanks very much for taking the time to talk to us. Our condolences to you and all of Peters Family and friends. What are your reflections on the man who was a great man and footballer . Yeah, i was fortunate enough to be joining west ham in the mid 605. They had won the fa cup in 1964. There were three players in the west ham in the world cup winning side. The captain and martin scoring there, it was an amazing time to be a young player and apprentice. We all came back pre season in 1966 stop it was replete with news people and press people, and it was an amazing experience. I think the three of them, even at the time, we re three of them, even at the time, were a bit shocked at the reaction, and of course, and each decade went, eve ryo ne and of course, and each decade went, everyone realised that that when in 1966 was amazing. Here we are many yea rs later 1966 was amazing. Here we are many years later and havent won the world cup sense, so it is amazing time really. In one at the newspapers today, they pick out that his way of celebrating was to have a cuppa his way of celebrating was to have a cu p pa tea his way of celebrating was to have a cuppa tea with his wife. He was a very humble, modest man, from what we have learned. Yes, he was a lovely fella. He lived locally to the club, and yes, as a player, first for west ham and then five great years at bears, and then with norwich. All of those three clubs remember him with great affection as a player who gave everything. But away from that, he was a much quieter, humble individual. He could walk around in the locality and people could chat to him and approach him. He was a lovely fellow, and it was only over the last three years when his condition deteriorated, did you not see him in the city. So it is really sad, and of course, particularly so with christmas coming up. Our thoughts are with the family. Yes, absolutely. So ramsay said he was a player ahead of his time. Just explain why that was. Yes. As players, we were lucky that rob green was our manager. He was a great coach. Certainly, with martin and geoff as midfield players, we got renowned as a club and 18 for crosses , got renowned as a club and 18 for crosses, near post, crosses, and martin was great during that. The style of football. West ham was quite continental eyes when they won the world cup, people said it was like watching an overseas team. That was unusual for an english team at that time. Martin and jeff were very much instrumental to that, and all of ourtraining much instrumental to that, and all of our training was based on that. Martin, asa of our training was based on that. Martin, as a midfield player, scored a lot more goals than me, but he was someone who did the play in a very low key someone who did the play in a very low key way. It is only when you tally up the goals that he scored with the main three clubs, what an impact he made. The great thing that has been said is that he impacted all of us as the Young Players coming through, but he conducted himself and showed us how to behave. Thank you very much. We wish you all the best for christmas, our thoughts with Martin Peters family and friends. Such a pleasure watching that goal again. Almost the goal that goal again. Almost the goal that got forgotten. What a waiting to be remembered. Ijust i just love that photo ijust love that photo of the i just love that photo of the four generations of the royal family. Maths teacher and writer, bobby seagull, is here to tell us whats caught his eye. Mathematical equations. Yes, they are all related to a Christmas Tree. You did set as a maths challenge late earlier. I did. The first story iam late earlier. I did. The first story i am picking any papers is from the sunday times. College in Northern England to give us a powerhouse for a technology based. If we think of the great universities in the world, mit, and places like that come to mind. Llife mit, and places like that come to mind. L life even iron mans tony stark. He went to mit. The government is thinking we need to create our own version of the mit, but in the north, so it potentially leads to the kind of university where, ultimately, it is about creating the space and Technical Support so that academics can conduct their Research Ideas into practical Business Ideas and benefits. It is interesting because promises for the northway massive pa rt promises for the northway massive part of the conservative manifesto. Things like this would give it some credence . Absolutely. If you look at things like the university of oxford and other russell universities, they are all in the south. We need to make sure we spread the academic possibilities all around the country, especially intact. It is going to be brilliant. Teaching in a secondary school, and you are doing the papers for us as well. Tell us about that at this. This is another teaching story. This is also tech related. We are segueing into the story. As a teacher, sometimes, when stu d e nts story. As a teacher, sometimes, when students are away for illness or for short or protracted periods, it can be difficult to know what to do. Do just send the worksheets . The kids can get disengage without a teacher. So somerset are trialling sending robots, just under £3000 each, so there is one in the class and one any childs home. Almost like skype. The kit can sit at home and watch the lessons going on in real time, and perhaps interact with the teacher. So it is a great teacher chance for children who are away from class do not miss out on the interaction completely. That is great because so much of the learning is about the report with the teacher. Getting on with them is important. Yes, and imagine in remote important. Yes, and imagine in re m ote parts important. Yes, and imagine in remote parts of the world, where you only have ten students per class, but you could have the same robots in somerset. And then we have got this one here. This is on in the mailon this one here. This is on in the mail on sunday. This one here. This is on in the mailon sunday. Im this one here. This is on in the mail on sunday. Im going to cover this up because it is one that we didnt want to show, the various reasons. Im not doing a very good job. Let me fold this. It is not a massive story, it is about soccer stars and big car cover bills. Yes, the reason i picked this story is when i talk to my students about the probability of mass, you get statisticians and actual scientists looking at various risk factors. Ultimately, insurance covers Companies Need to cover their risks. They need to assess individuals and groups of people, and they have assessed that Football Players are the riskiest. So they play an average of £2000 a year, whereas the least risky our exam invigilators. They have got the structure. So do you think there is a team of psychologists looking at the kind of character that goes into that career path and working out the risks . They actually monitor, look at all these groups of people and check how many accidents they have. So it is very statistical. Tv reporters have very high instances, unfortunately. statistical. Tv reporters have very high instances, unfortunately. I had a mental maths challenge and was beaten to the final answer. It was my book, the life changing of magical numbers. Santa claus is going to attend the bbc christmas lectures on Christmas Day. Mrs claus travelled separately. Santa claus sta rts travelled separately. Santa claus starts at 6p n and travels on his sleigh at 100 mph. Starts at 6p n and travels on his sleigh at100 mph. Mrs starts at 6p n and travels on his sleigh at 100 mph. Mrs claus starts 30 minutes later, and flies at 150 mph. At what time with they cross each other . I said 7 30pm, she is cruising along. You might be right, what is the method you used . I fought, if they are both within an hours time, where would that get us to . But she started half an hour later, so. Yes, i did it in 15 minute segments. Is there a clever equation for this . You can set up a quick system of equations, but the easier way of doing it is looking at the steady minutes where centre has travelled. Essentially, mrs claus has to catch up. So she travels at 108 mph, santa travels at 100, what is the difference between the two . So, is actually very easy. I find visualising them both very useful. Somebody pointed out that may be at one point they would realise they havent got present and go off in different directions. They have different directions. They have different speed limits up there, havent they . Different speed limits up there, havent they . Id like to be honest, i think nafta got a bit faster. Thousands of people have turned up to stonehenge this morning to mark the winter solstice. Its been celebrated by pagans around the world for thousands of years to mark the shortest, darkest day of the year. Our reporter, michele cross, is there for us this morning. Wow, what a turn out what is the plan today, and why . Reporter files of people gather here at the ancient stones from the early hours of the morning. Thousands of people. You can hear drumbeats, there were bagpipes earlier, they are celebrating the winter solstice. They have been plenty of colourful outfits on display, the ancient prehistoric site has been celebrated as a place of worship and celebration for thousands of years. It is celebrating the sun at his lowest point on the horizon. There has been plenty of colourful outfits, we will talk to some people about that in a minute. The sun rose here at 8 11am, i think you have some pictures of that beautiful sunrise, a very clear sky also. The winter solstice marks the limit when the sun is closer to the limit when the sun is closer to the horizon than any other time of the horizon than any other time of the year, meaning shorter days and longer nights. It breaks the back of winter when they start to get longer. With the recent weather, we we re longer. With the recent weather, we were really lucky to get a morning, that happens in about one in every ten years. Im going to chat with some people have jointly thousands of people here today. Joanne, what a beautiful outfit. Just it to me. Thank you very much. We comic less every year, just a mark of the solstice. We come like this. Get with the people, the atmosphere is amazing, we love to bring the kids, its really a family atmosphere, never any trouble. You have brought your daughter, chloe, i hope you have been beating that drum this morning. Michael, talking throughout the outfits you have put together. Just getting some bits and pieces, tie them on, stick them on our heads, happy days youre a pagan, what does the winter solstice mean to you . Celebrating ancestors and that, having a tiny drink of meat, that, having a tiny drink of meat, that sort of thing what do you think of the turnout today . Yeah, its really good. Jenny, youre from english heritage. Impressed by the turnout here, what numbers have we seen this morning . I think about 5000 people, which is fantastic. There are local people, people who have travelled from across the world, running groups. Lovely, thank you very much. As you can see, the party is really continual here, started in the early hours and it is set to continue for some time to come. That looks like quite a knees 7 come. That looks like quite a knees ts come. That looks like quite a knees up . Its a real perk for them because you do not normally get to go around these days, they get to get up close and personal. While many of us might get a bit bored of the same old christmas films and tv repeats at this time of year, people with dementia can actually benefit from rewatching the classics. Research by nhs england suggests it can stimulate memories and help keep the brain active. Lets take a look back at some of those classic tv moments. Bells ringing out from the old village spire. Grandmother pausing a while to admire. Grandfather roasting his nuts by the fire. A great christmas heart to view. Weve only got a couple of minutes, were the first turn mr lucas, youre forgetting the fairy dust fancy spending as much as this well, its christmas, isnt it . Oh, i dont know what to say. Well, thats never stopped you. I mean, im overwhelmed, you know. I mean, you get a surprise like this and you cant help thinking, maybe hes nicked them . Father christmas has been down the chimney a long time, hasnt he . Its not his fault, is it . Why . Well, hes down there, he gives the presents away. Then you give him a drink oh, i see, yeah. By three oclock, hes paralytic well, he doesnt eat cake. Its a Merry Christmas from me. And a happy new yearfrom him. Goodnight. Werejoined now byjohn larder, who has dementia, and his wife, beryl. And professor Alistair Burns who is the nhss National Clinical director for dementia and older people. John, we were watching those, have you got a favourite christmas film . Morecambe and wise. Burial, how important do you think this might be for a jaunt to see some of these great old classics again . Beryl. John has always had a great sense of humour, we like to watch them together. It reminds of of christmas past and the things we can do it now. John, are you excited about christmas . Yes. What do you enjoy about it . Christmas presents. Do you know what you are getting this year . No, it will all be a surprise. Alistair, in the work you have done some of the advice youre giving about triggering these food memories . I think having a diagnosis of dementia can be very isolating as we all know. One of the advantages of going back, whether it be an on film, song or series, is that it can back memories and give people a chance to really connect with families at this very special time of year. Beryl, have you found that christmas is a bit of a world one, is it important for you and john to keep things not too busy . We have a very busy life, and we seem to thrive on light. We do all sorts together, we have made new friends since johns diagnosis. We go to support groups, sporting memories. Sporting memories as a group were people who have any form of memory loss me to go there to reminisce about sport. We also do a quiz each week. We play darts. Did you see the interview we just week. We play darts. Did you see the interview wejust done week. We play darts. Did you see the interview we just done with Fallon Sherrock . We talked about that, we talk about everything relevant in sport. It is usually the men who go off to play darts, the women chart, it is nice to have the friendship and support of others who are going through at the same thing. What are your favourite sports, john . Darting. Have you enjoy going through those memories of big sporting moments . Oh, yeah. Alistair, we suggested not being too busy and taking things slowly for people, sometimes, for some people, you just need to take it slowly, dont you . You just need to take it slowly, dont you . I think with all that dementia affects people in very different ways, everyone is an individual, it is not one size fits all. Asjohn individual, it is not one size fits all. As john and individual, it is not one size fits all. Asjohn and beryl have demonstrated brilliantly, you cant live well with dementia. The activities described byjohn and beryl are very powerful because bringing back those memories and reconnecting with people is so important. Alistair, youre also encouraging people, it may be a time of year when you havent seen relatives for a while, to look out for early signs of dementia. What would they be . For early signs of dementia. What would they be . I think christmas is a good time because we tend to do the same thing every year. If you have not seen someone for a while, it can be an opportunity to have a direct comparison to a year before. So, if there are some changes concerning people, go to your gp to get an assessment, its a very good thing. Beryl said before, the diagnosis was a very positive thing. I say to anyone, if you find out anyone you ca re i say to anyone, if you find out anyone you care for yourself has got that diagnosis, dont be scared of it. It like saying you have any other disease, perhaps disease. It isa other disease, perhaps disease. It is a disease, and if you get onto the treatment quickly, it can perhaps be slowed down, the progression. John hike his diagnosis almost ten years ago now, but we still almost ten years ago now, but we st i ll love almost ten years ago now, but we still love a full and active life and have made new friends. Friends we had before our very supportive because they nowjohn as he was. I try to say, he is stilljohn. There was a time when a dementia diagnosis felt like the end of the world, now people have an excellent quality of life like you and john. What are your plans for learn . We are going to our daughters for Christmas Day. They are coming to us on boxing day. Thenin they are coming to us on boxing day. Then in january, what they are coming to us on boxing day.
