Police in new zealand say there are no signs of life on the island where a volcano erupted, killing tourists who were on a visit to the crater. At least five people are confirmed to have been killed but more than twenty others are missing and police say they dont expect any more survivors. Day trippers were seen walking inside the rim of the crater of the white island volcano just moments before the eruption. Richard lister reports. Seconds after the eruption began, these tourists got off the island just in time. Minutes later, and a boiling ash cloud fills the sky. Oh, my god. The boat crew know how dangerous this is. Go inside not half an hour before, theyd been at the craters edge, with no idea of what was coming. After returning to their boat and seeing the blast, they go back to look for survivors. They find a sightseeing helicopter destroyed by the eruption. The plume of ash is still building and further down the beach, a large group of daytrippers is assembling on a rock, waiting for rescue. 23 people were picked up by tourist boats but others are still unaccounted for. Among them, this group, seen on a monitoring camera heading for the craterjust before the eruption. I know there will be a huge amount of concern and anxiety for those who have loved ones on or around the island at the time, and i can assure them, police are doing everything they can. The injured were brought to wha katane harbour, most were suffering from burns and five of them did not survive their injuries. Helicopters transferred those who were critically ill to specialist hospitals, but this rescue and recovery operation has had to be suspended for now. The island is unstable, the possibilities of further eruptions, and actually, the physical environment is unsafe for us to return to the island. White island may be new zealands most active volcano, but its also popular with tourists. Some 10,000 visit every year. Last month, a Volcano Monitoring Group raised the alert level, saying eruptions may be more likely. It is quite plausible that this is the first stage of an eruption that could continue. But on the same side of the coin, it could just simply be a one hit wonder. The police have been flying Reconnaissance Aircraft looking for any signs of life on the island. They say theyve found none, and they re assuming there are no more survivors. Richard lister, bbc news. Chiara petrone is with me shes a volcanologist at the Natural History museum in london. Thank you forjoining us. First of all, why do you think this volcano erupted now . It had been quite active . It is a very active volcano. It has had the renewed activity since 2012 and in the last couple of months there has been a rest so people at geo net, the Monitoring Survey of new zealand, they have been seeing signs of renewed activity, more intense activity, and the last couple of months. About three weeks ago, they raised it from level one to level two which means the activity is picking, and increasing. So increasing activity, and that raises the question, why on earth would tourists be able to visit and actually walk around the rim of the crater . That is a very good question. First of all, in this particular case, it is a privately owned island, and the Tourist Company kind of assume responsibility so to speak. But there are many volcanoes in which people are more or less allowed to 90, people are more or less allowed to go, and there is a very fine line between informing people and so people should know which risk they are taking when they go to an active volcano, and the authority say, you cannot go. So its very difficult and in this particular case the island is just a and in this particular case the island isjust a crater. What we and in this particular case the island is just a crater. What we can see is just the top crater and the majority of the island is under so what happened is when people go there they actually are right in the crater, so it is very dangerous. What about other volcanoes around the world where visitors go . Would you think that perhaps people should have second thoughts about visiting volcanoes as tourists . People should be informed all the time and they should really know what they are putting their life at risk. The problem is that many people, is much asa problem is that many people, is much as a volcanologist or Geological Service or any volcano monitoring observatory is informing people, some peoplejust. Clearly, when you see a volcano some peoplejust. Clearly, when you see a volcano it is beautiful. It is fascinating and exciting. And it is clear that people want to visit. 0n the other hand, what we can do is just visit. 0n the other hand, what we can do isjust to inform people as much as possible and give the right information. If you go, it is an active volcano and there is the sort of risk. As you were saying, there we re of risk. As you were saying, there were warnings of heightened activity but even so, are you surprised that it erupted with this ferocity and this deadliness . Well, i am not surprised in the sense that this is kind of eruption in line with the type of activity of this volcano. 0n the other hand, it is unfortunate, a significant amount of people die, and this is very sad. But the eruption itself is not a major eruption. After all, all the activity was confined in just the crater. It is very unfortunately the case that people were there at that moment. Having said that, it is quite difficult to forecast an eruption like this because most of the time there are no warning signs. Thank you very much for being with us. Thanks for your expert analysis. Borisjohnson has been criticised for his response to the case of a four year old boy who slept on a hosptalfloor because of a lack of beds. The Prime Minister was confronted with the image of Jack Williment barr at leeds general infirmary on a reporters phone during an interview for itv, but initially did not look at it, instead putting the phone in his pocket. He later produced the phone and said it was a terrible photo. The hospital apologised to jacks family for the long wait and said in a statement. Lets get the latest on this from our Political Correspondent helen catt. We can head to outside the leeds general infirmary. Nick. That picture ofjack general infirmary. Nick. That picture of jack has become general infirmary. Nick. That picture ofjack has become a big issue in the general election campaign. Today, after that video of borisjohnson repeatedly refusing to look at the picture went viral on social media. Mrjohnson eventually as you said looked at the picture and said it was dreadful and apologise for the situation but he has faced repeated questions today about whether he lacked empathy when he was confronted on it. Have a listen to mrjohnson when he was asked again about jacks situation ata asked again about jacks situation at a press conference. We are not only investing in Childrens Services in leeds but also rebuilding the infirmary from top to bottom, and we can do that because we are now putting the biggest ever investment into the nhs. What i dont want to see is a fantastic programme that is going to unite and level up our country being blocked again, and we have got to build, and parliament, that would insist we have to increase funding on the nhs over and above inflation every year. That is now blocked by this parliament because we havent got a working majority. If we can get a working majority on thursday we can take this country forward, get brexit done and invest massively in our public services, and that is the choice we face. So some of the familiarcampaign the choice we face. So some of the familiar Campaign Themes from mr johnson, not much on the specifics of jacks case, and johnson, not much on the specifics ofjacks case, and opposition parties, as you know, have repeatedly accused the conservatives of not caring enough about the Health Service and that is why potentially this is quite damaging for potentially this is quite damaging foer potentially this is quite damaging for mrjohnson. The labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has accused the conservatives of showing they dont ca re conservatives of showing they dont care in their response. Have a listen to jeremy care in their response. Have a listen toJeremy Corbyn. The daily mirror today shows this picture, i will turn it around so eve ryo ne picture, i will turn it around so everyone can see it, this picture of a four year old boy suffering from pneumonia being treated on the floor ofa pneumonia being treated on the floor of a hospital. And people ask questions about this and i simply say this. The toadies have had nine yea rs say this. The toadies have had nine years to fund our nhs properly. It is time to bring their regime to an end and elect a Labour Government thatis end and elect a Labour Government that is determined to fund our nhs properly. Now the tories insist they will put more money into the nhs and mrjohnson has promised billions more. He said earlier that leads infirmary behind me will be one of those hospitals who get more cash, but if you want a sign of how seriously conservatives are taking this this afternoon after mr johnsons initial response was so widely criticised, within the last couple of hours the Health Secretary matt hancock was scrambled to the hospital here to speak to management. He has also spoken to jacks mother. Have a listen to what he said when he was your half an hour ago. I was horrified. I have three small children myself and have spent too many evenings in a e and i know what it feels like. I want to make it better. One of the good things about what is happening here at the leeds general as they have already identified the problems on this unit and the fact there wasnt enough space and they have got a funded plan, in fact they are trebling the size of the unit next year. We will be putting on the record amount of funding, biggest ever injection into the nhs, and that is needed. It is funded because we have got a record numbers of people in work and are able to fund it but i want to make sure the nhs is always there for anybody who needs it and that means consta ntly anybody who needs it and that means constantly looking to see what improvements need to be made. Aside from the obvious personal circumstances of the family involved in this, it has become a big election issue today and it is not what the conservatives wanted to be talking about. Borisjohnson wanted to spend today, three days before polling, talking about brexit and trying to target those labour areas but instead, labour are able to tackle the conservatives on the nhs. The national Health Service featured elsewhere in campaigning for the election. Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon said Boris Johnson posed a threat to the nhs. I speak to so many people every day now who are genuinely concerned about having somebody like Boris Johnson deciding and shaping and in fa ct johnson deciding and shaping and in fact dictating the future of the country. He has shown himself to be com pletely u ntrustworthy country. He has shown himself to be completely untrustworthy in his short time as Prime Minister and on his campaign trail he is dodging scrutiny and i think people are genuinely worried about the direction of travel he wants to take the country and. Threats to our national Health Service, an erosion of workers rights, a hard to possibly no deal brexit, his get brexit done line is the biggest con of the campaign. If you get this done all that happens is the next phase of chaos kicks in. I dont believe the majority of the people of scotla nd believe the majority of the people of scotland want that kind of future. The liberal democrat leader, jo swinson, has defended her partys pledge to revoke article 50 which paved the way for britain to leave the european union. Speaking earlier on five live and the bbc news channel she denied that rejecting the result of the 2016 referendum was undemocratic. In the vast majority of circumstances, it is unchanged, the liberal democrats want a peoples vote and you will Work Together to secure a peoples votes that puts a specific deal to the public to have their say. Lets be clear, we have tried to make that happen in parliament and the preference was to resolve this issue through a peoples vote on the brexit deal that Boris Johnson went and negotiated, rather thana johnson went and negotiated, rather than a general election, because it would be more specific. It would be one question youre asking people. Obviously in a general election there are a lot of different factors that weigh up. Russia has been banned from all major sporting events for four years including the next olympics and world cup. The World Anti Doping Agency announced the unprecedented ban after finding that russian officials had tampered with data to cover up evidence of cheating. Russian athletes who can prove they were untainted by the doping scandal will still be allowed to compete but only under a neutral banner. Our Sports Correspondent andy swiss reports. The Russian Federation from 0lympic hosts to sporting outcasts. Ever since holding the winter games in 2014, russia has been mired in unprecedented doping scandal, and now it faces an unprecedented punishment. After fresh revelations of another cover up by russian officials, this morning the World Anti Doping Agency banned russia from all major sporting events for four years. Following a string of transgressions, their patience had run out of. Russia was afforded every opportunity to get its house in order, and to rejoin the global anti doping community, for the good of its athletes and for the integrity of sport, but it chose instead to a different route. They have had three swings at the bat, struck out three times. The duplicity and deceit and deception they exhibited isjust beyond the pale. I think it is an embarrassment to the athletes in the world. It has recently emerged russias Anti Doping Agency tampered with laboratory data, altering or deleting athletes test results. Earlier, the new head of the Russian Agency told the bbc the scale of the previous regimes cover up. Thousands of entries were deleted. Yeah. Thousands. The punishment means there will be no russia team at next years olympics. 0nly athletes who can prove they are clean can compete, under a neutralflag, as some did at the winter games last year in pyeongchang. It also means russia are banned from the football world cup. Remember, they hosted the last tournament, but their National Team will not be at the next one in 2022. Russia can appeal against the punishment, but five years on from the now notorious sochi games, one of sports traditional super powers is out in the cold. Andy swiss, bbc news. An old baileyjudge has given a man 33 life sentences for a series of rapes and violent sex attacks on 11 women and children across england. Joseph mccanns victims were aged between 11 and 71. Our Home Affairs Correspondent sarah corker is at the old bailey. Yes, Joseph Mccann was described today as a brutal and dangerous man who showed no remorse for his dangerous crimes. For two weeks you roa m dangerous crimes. For two weeks you roam the country kidnapping and raping women and children. His attack started in watford, continued in london, lancashire and greater manchester. He was finally arrested in cheshire. There was a police chase, he was in a stolen car and was eventually found hiding up a tree by the police helicopter. Mccann refused to come to the old bailey for his four week trial and again today he refused to come to court for his sentencing. He said he had a bad back. Thejudge in court described him as a coward, a violent bully and a paedophile. A coward because you been unable to fissure accusers and have chosen instead to hide on your cell. He went on to say, you are a classic psychopath, i do not think you will ever cease to be dangerous until old age deprives you of the strings to commit serious sexual offences.
