The bishop of london said the vigils remembered academics who came to celebrate rehabilitation, but found only danger. Andy moore reports. At the guildhall in london, friends of saskia jones and jack merritt came with flowers to remember theirfriends. Britains political leaders also came to pay tribute. We stand in silence once more, following the atrocity on London Bridge last friday. Our city, vibrant and alive, yet threatened with death. Let us keep silent and remember. The brief service was inclusive of all faiths. Let us pray for all faithful muslims grieving at such acts taken in the name of theirfaith. The mayor of london spoke for the people of the capital. A chance to remember the two Young Cambridge University Graduates who lost their lives in the attack here. Also the three people who were injured, two of whom remained in hospital. Plus, the ordinary members of the public who decided that they need to do something extraordinary, helping hold down the attackerjust over there until the police arrived. He said london would not be powered by acts of terrorism. Ec that here on London Bridge today. It reopened and there have been a steady stream of people going out with normal life. They are trying to provide reassurance of the public and also what you see is fishman or his hall where the attack began. And that is where the attack began. And that is where we have been hearing about extraordinary stories. The polish chef that was working in the basement when the attack broke out. He was cleaning glasses and he heard a scream and he decided to do something. He rushed upstairs and he was one of the people who grabbed something and fought with the attacker usman khan for around one minute. He sustained five injuries to his side. And then the attacker was chased out here. Another person used a fire extinguisher to try and stop any further people being hurt. The mayor of london said there are stories like that that we should really be talking about rather than people who want to get away from unity in this country. Simon, thank you very much indeed. Speaking as leaders gather in madrid for two weeks of talks, Antonio Guterres said the Climate Crisis was imminent and that it was essential that countries commit to more ambitious carbon cutting targets. Its the 25th round of this un meeting, where they are thrashing out the details of the plan to stop global warming. But the window to act is closing. Let us open our eyes to the imminent threat facing us all. Let us open our minds to the unanimity of the science. There is no time and no reason to delay. We have the tools, we have the science, we have the resources. Let us show we also have the political will that people demand from us. The un has already said we should try and keep Global Temperatures from rising above 1. 5 degrees to stop the worst effects of Climate Change. But this will mean drastic cuts to Greenhouse Gas emissions. It will require sweeping changes to the way we live, from using Renewable Energy instead of fossil fuels, to shifting to electric cars and making our homes more energy efficient. But there are warnings that nations are not going far enough. There are definitely things that individuals can do, from really checking how much meat you are consuming to whether an in country flight is really necessary, taking the train more, not using your car. But the reality is that a lot of the big stuff needs to come from governments. An individual can make a decision about purchasing an electric vehicle, but they cant lay down the infrastructure that would actually allow you to use it. So it really needs to be that combination of a whole of society push. On her way to the talks is 16 year old greta thunberg. Shes sparked a Global Climate movement, with millions of young people taking to the streets. They say the world needs to act on climate now because it is their future that is at stake. And rebecca joins us live now from the conference in madrid. Very strong warning there. Yes, that is right there is a sense of urgency and pressure to this meeting from the outside world. And the main message is the window of opportunity to act is closing. And governments really do need to be committing to more ambitious targets to try and limit global warming. I am joined by the glow that the global Climate Change lead to. This is the 25th round advance, but some people say there has not been enough action. Absolutely, we have been missing in action for it several decades. On one hand we need to ramp up the. 60 Million People in africa are suffering from increasing number of floods and cyclones and droughts. 9 Million People, particularly women and children are facing starvation and children are facing starvation and that number is going to go up to 45 million in the next five months. That is a crime emergency. The fact is developed countries have been using all kinds of dealing and bullying tactics and not allowing any progress to happen. We have a system, a mechanism that was established, but no funding is going to those people who are facing the emergency right now. You are based in india. India is an important part of the summit here. Are they doing enough . When it comes to a 2 degrees target india is doing it. And all the reports say that they are in line with keeping the emissions below 2 degrees, but when it comes to the 1. 5 degrees target india has to the 1. 5 degrees target india has to do more. But we must also recognise it is a developing company. And they have to put finance developed nations have to put financing on the table to help developing nations like indiana. I think that needs to be recognised that they are also suffering from Climate Change. It is a complex issue. Do you think there will be a big conclusion from this meeting . Absolutely. We are calling for a new syste m absolutely. We are calling for a new system to be established, so when ever developing nations face this kind of situation, the help from the un system will exist. That is a clear demand that we have and we hope to see some progress here. As you heard, two weeks of intense discussions which have just started today. The company runs 1800 daily services. But during the strike that figure is down to about 1000. The dispute focuses on the role of guards aboard trains. On newer trains being introduced next year the drivers will be able to close the doors themselves removing one of the guards main duties. But the rmt says that that will undermine safety. The guard is the person that dispatches a train, makes sure no one is stuck in the doors of the train. And the management want to take that role away and put it on a driver who doesnt want it. The driver is busy enough. We have seen trap and drag accidents go through the roof. We have seen assaults on the train increase by over 100 in the last five years. And the last thing we need to do is get rid of the safety critical guard. The Train Company insists that passengers will not be put in danger. We are committed to retaining a guard on our trains with safety Critical Skills but we want to make sure that when the new trains come into service from the middle of next year they are operated in the best possible way to give our customers and more punctual service. What is your message to londoners today after this horrific attack . It is important that we remembered jack and saskia and all those who have been affected by that terrible event on friday. I was encouraged to see the way in which people in london not only came out into danger, but also supported each other in what was a very difficult situation. There was real heroism which has been praised by the mayor of london. A sort of defiance by londoners who simply will not stand for that kind of violence that there was on friday. What we saw was the courage of london really. People who were offering hospitality and service, they were also providing protection for others and we saw the churches in the area opening their doors as people where fleeing. There is a lwa ys people where fleeing. There is always a danger that this kind of attack can increase division. What would you say about that . Is your appeal now for unity . Could you repeat that . It is a day to give out support to those who continue to suffer and the families who have lost people and that is really the focus of this morning and the rest of our day. They were trying to help rehabilitate offenders and in doing that they ran into danger. What was wonderful it is these two young people who could have been having a corporate career chose to work with those less fortu nate chose to work with those less fortunate than themselves. With me here is counter extremism analyst liam duffy, who does a lot of advising on the risk of radicalisation, extremism and terrorism. Thank you very much for being with us. Well, to be honest, having worked in Counter Terrorism in a few years and speaking with colleagues, it is probable one of the most tragic cases i can probable one of the most tragic cases i can remember. Probable one of the most tragic cases i can remember. A colleague who worked on this for long event i have, he texted me when it was unfolding, saying it eggs a lot to shock people who work in counterterrorism, but this was shocking. So many layers of tragedy. Shocking in particular because this seemed on the surface to be somebody who was reforming, who was changing, and yet was anything but. It would appear like that, yes. We have to ask. We have to go back, we are not sure, we will have to check whether he was playing the system. What it will mean, i think, is as we do more de radical and efforts in prison and in communities, we need to look at this is a case study for yea rs to look at this is a case study for years to for years ahead. They will try to weapon eyes this and i feel that they will advise future followers to do the same. With the best will in the world, you can be you can have a tens system, but you always have people like this it will not work 100 of the time, and anyone suggests that there is money that you can put towards this and it will work 100 of the time and you need to but everyone through a deradicalisation system, it will work 100 of the time, that is not true. This is not an exact science. There is no sophisticated programme in the world at the moment. Most countries are guessing at what they are doing. There is a Science Behind it, but were figuring this out as we go along. To pretend that there isa we go along. To pretend that there is a Silver Bullet to this is naive. What about sentencing . There is a row about this, a political row, some are saying lock them up and throw away the key, others are saying it isnt that simple. Where do you stand on that . Probably, quite predictably, it has turned into a binary. It is either draconian or rehabilitation. I dont think it is either all. I dont believe in putting people away for ever and locking them up and throwing away the key. I support rehabilitation, i support deradicalisation efforts entirely. Some former extremists are big supporters of deradicalisation. How can you be sure quite in a case like this, it appears that there is an ability to pretend that one has reformed. I dont think there is any where you can definitely be sure. I would argue that perhaps six years in this case, because he only served six years, for the complexity of the plot and at sentencing the judge said he was committed and i hardened idealist. I would argue six years is probably on the lenient side for that, not in terms of punitive, but this guy was extremely committed to the cause and we cant expect that to be undone in six years, especially if there is no kind of sophisticated effort going on to disengage him. When you talk about deradicalisation, do you think there are sufficient resources in terms of money, manpower and so one to make it effective in this country at this moment . These things are happening, but there is not a magic figure we can drum up and say this is what we need to make this happen, because we dont know what does or doesnt work was i would like to see more of it done, but more reform to the Justice System to deal with this type of crime as well. The great irony of this is that the two young people who died were campaigners for rehabilitation of offenders, that is what they will try to do. The kind of moral difference between the people involved here couldnt be starker. We have people who are the best of our society, try to help and make a difference to a lot of people in that room, a lot of people in that room who are ex offenders who actually to fight this individual, and then the people we saw in the dramatic footage fighting on the street. I would endeavour to give people the answer is that they were looking for, as far as i possibly could. I did that in 2014, i would do that in future. The one caveat i would inject is that whether scotla nd would inject is that whether scotland is independent or not, whether the uk is in or out of brexit, the future is never entirely certain. There was a minutes silence for 25 year old jack merritt and saskia jones who was 23 both stabbed to death by usman khan a convicted terrrorist whod been released from prison on licence. The bishop of london said the vigils remembered academics who came to celebrate rehabilitation but found only danger. Andy moore reports. At the guildhall in london, friends of saskia jones and jack merritt came with flowers to remember theirfriends. Britains political leaders also came to pay tribute. We stand in silence once more, following the atrocity on London Bridge last friday. Our city, vibrant and alive, yet threatened with death. Let us keep silent and remember. And also a chance to pay tribute to the ordinary members of the public who did extraordinary things. In a message during that vigil, from the mayor it was a message of defiance that london would not be brought down by acts of terrorism. The bridge was reopened yesterday evening and people have been walking over it all day. They have not been scared, they have wanted to be out and about in the capital. Also park here is where the investigation is going on because behind me is where the attack broke out on friday afternoon. We have been hearing about those acts of heroism. A polish chef who is named lucas who was working in the basement. He heard a scream, he was trained in first aid heard a scream, he was trained in firstaid and heard a scream, he was trained in first aid and he decided he needed to do something he rushed upstairs and grabbed an ornamental stick off the wall and he grappled with usman khan. That allowed people to flee and get out of danger. Then the attacker was changed onto the bridge and held down by the members of the public before the police arrived. We have been learning more about usman khan. We understand that when he was released from jail this time last year, he was considered to be a low priority by m15 in terms of the need for further investigation. The threat he was deemed to pose to the public was deemed minimal. He was Given Community supervision and he was on the highest level of that. Thatin was on the highest level of that. That in theory limited who he could have co nta ct that in theory limited who he could have contact with. Also where he could go, but obviously something went terribly wrong. That is going to be part of future investigations. I think today the focus is very much on the two people who lost their lives and a chance for people to come together and remember their lives. He wants a criminalJustice System that is fit for purpose. Labour also wants more Police Officers, 22,000. It wants to restore prison officer numbers to 2010 levels. Theres been a 9 drop since then. He also wants to review the prevent and protect programmes, which combat extremism and protect the public. All of the Political Parties one form or another said they would invest the criminal Justice System but can the threat from convicted terrorists ever be eliminated . You absolutely cannot just sentence your way out of this problem by locking people up for longer and longer periods. You have to use the time they are in custody, year after year, to work with them and ensure that supervision on release is fit for purpose and it is not at the moment. You also have to recognise that there is always going to be some risk. However that prevention becomes, the uncomfortable truth is that we will all have to live with some level of threat for the foreseeable future. Clive coleman, bbc news. His left arm was behind his back. And i could see matter coming out of the back of his head. I checked his pulse, and i knew he was dead. He was captured on camera again which a short time after. The violence would eventually come to an end here and Exeter City Centre in the early hours on february 11, but not before a final confrontation at this hotel. Being that i campaigned against Early Release and shorter sentences for many years, it was in my manifesto in 2012 when i was in my manifesto in 2012 when i was running for the mayor of london. Isaid it was running for the mayor of london. I said it in august, and it was in the clean speech. In fact there is a bell that was ready to go to stop automatic Early Release for serious and dangerous offenders. I think u nfortu nately and dangerous offenders. I think unfortunately that is the problem we face. We have too many people who are released automatically onto the streets. We need to address that. If we can get the parliament fixed and get that bill through, then we will. You need to be honest with people because this guy was in jail for eight years, the whole time under a conservative government and you did not deradicalise him. The system has failed on your watch. Any impartial assessment of the situation we can see that he was sentenced to a short time and praise him and he was subject to 16 years unlicensed. Only serving two years on remand, eight yea rs serving two years on remand, eight years altogether. I do not think that was long enough in view of the gravity of his offence which was to conspire to blow up the Stock Exchange and cause other types of mayhem. And in view in the view that was taken of him by the initial sentencing judge. And looking at what thejudge said sentencing judge. And looking at what the judge said about him, it is clear he was viewed as a very serious threat. And my feeling is very simple, ourjob is to keep the public safe and that is why i have campaigned for so long against automatic Early Release. And as i say, we have a bill to fix that. Hundreds of thousands of commuters in southern england face weeks of rail disruption after members of the rmt union on South Western Railway began a major strike. They will take part in 27 days of industrial action lasting until new years day. Some people would say it does have a clinical purpose that you do need a consultation, it is about to have a face to face contact with medical staff. No, there is no Health Reason for that. Women are perfectly capable of knowing when they need to take this pill. In other countries, including in north america and elsewhere in europe, it is available to buy from the shelf without consultation. That doesnt mean women cannot seek advice if they need it, the same way as if you go to buy any other product in a pharmacy, you can seek further information and advice from pharmacists, but we know that barrier in our experience of talking to tens of thousands of women every year with an unplanned pregnancy, that consultation and the cost, which still remains very high, can act as a real barrier to women using this pill when they need it. Im sure you are aware what the society for the protection of unborn children are saying, and people like that, campaigners like that was not they are saying, this approach is propaganda to deceive women do thinking that Abortion Pills are safe and simple. They are neither. What would you say to that . The morning after pill is not an abortion pill. They are talking about broadening. Making it easier for women to access any medical abortion. I dont think it will come to any surprise that they resent the fa ct to any surprise that they resent the fact that people might be able to Access Health ca re fact that people might be able to Access Health care systems more easily. If women are facing an unplanned pregnancy and they need to access abortion care, they should be able to do that as swiftly and stra ig htforwa rdly able to do that as swiftly and straightforwardly as possible. You touched on this briefly, but how do we compare with other similar countries, such as european countries, such as european countries, the United States, canada, in terms of this sort of availability . In regard to abortion . We are lacking behind now. We were a pioneer in the late 60s of introducing our abortion act, which has been a fundamental piece of legislation which in many respects has served women well, but a lot of the provisions in that act are wildly out of date with clinical practices today. It was not an act that sought to deliver woman centred care, it was about addressing the Public Health concern of backstreet abortions uptime. What we need is legislation that is fit for the needs of women today, and up to date with updates in medical practice. Three men have appeared in court charged in connection with an explosion at a mill in cheshire in which four people died four years ago. 64 year old director george boden from stockport and his company Wood Treatment limited are both accused of corporate manslaughter. William bartz, who was 51, 62 year old derek miller from stoke on trent, 38 year old jason shingler, and dorothy bailey, 62, who lived in bosley for most of her life. Today, the managing director George Boughton appeared at Stockport Magistrates Court charged with four counts of manslaughter by gross negligence on one charge under the health and safety act. Manager Peter Schindler is charged with the health and safety offence, along with another manager, philip smith. Wood Treatment Limited is charged with four counts of corporate manslaughter relating to the deaths and one offence of failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its employees. During a short hearing, Elizabeth Reid for the prosecution read out the charges faced by Wood Treatment limited. George boden, philip smith and peter schingler, all three men spoke to confirm their name and address. The court also heard they denied the charges. The bishop of london said the vigils remembered academics who came to celebrate rehabilitation but found only danger. Andy moore reports. At the guildhall in london, friends of saskia jones and jack merritt came with flowers to remember theirfriends. Britains political leaders also came to pay tribute. We stand in silence once more, following the atrocity on London Bridge last friday. Our city, vibrant and alive, yet threatened with death. Let us keep silent and remember. Being that, i campaigned against Early Release and shorter sentences for many years, it was in my manifesto in 2012 when i was mayor of london. I said it in august, and it was in the queens speech. In fact there is a bill that was ready to go to stop automatic Early Release for serious and dangerous offenders. I think unfortunately that is the problem we face. We have too many people who are released automatically onto the streets. We need to address that. If we can get this parliament fixed and get that bill through, then we will. You need to be honest with people because this guy was in jail for eight years, the whole time under a conservative government and you did not deradicalise him. The system has failed on your watch. Any impartial assessment of the situation we can see that he was sentenced to a short time in prison and he was subject to 16 years on licence. Only serving two years on remand, eight years altogether. I do not think that was long enough in view of the gravity of his offence which was to conspire to blow up the Stock Exchange and cause other types of mayhem. And in view of the view that was taken of him by the initial sentencing judge. And looking at what the judge said about him, it is clear he was viewed as a very serious threat. And my feeling is very simple, ourjob is to keep the public safe and that is why i have campaigned for so long against automatic Early Release. And as i say, we have a bill to fix that. What i would like to see happen is to get that through. To do that, we need to fix this parliament. Borisjohnson, by Boris Johnson, by no borisjohnson, by no means going back on his focus on sentencing. And still saying that the sentencing regime when this man was convicted, he fails, was in part to blame for what happened. The law has changed since. We have the tools, we have the science, we have the resources. Let us show we also have the political will that people demand from us. The un has already said we should try and keep Global Temperatures from rising above 1. 5 degrees to stop the worst effects of Climate Change. It will require sweeping changes to the way we live, from using Renewable Energy instead of fossil fuels, to shifting to electric cars and making our homes more energy efficient. But there are warnings that nations are not going far enough. There are definitely things that individuals can do, from really checking how much meat you are consuming to whether an in country flight is really necessary, taking the train more, not using your car. But the reality is that a lot of the big stuff needs to come from governments. An individual can make a decision about purchasing an electric vehicle, but they cant lay down the infrastructure that would actually allow you to use it. So it really needs to be that combination of a whole of society push. On her way to the talks is 16 year old greta thunberg. Shes sparked a Global Climate movement, with millions of young people taking to the streets. They say the world needs to act on climate now because it is their future that is at stake. A paranoid schizophrenic has been cleared of the murders of three men in exeter. Alexander lewis ra nwell admitted killing the men in february, but had pleaded not guilty to murder on the basis he was insane at the time an argument the jury accepted. Chris dilley reports. This is Alexander Lewis ranwells second release from custody, but were Key Opportunities missed to stop his killing . He was going to kill me. Im sure he was. People died for nothing. It could have been stopped. Alexander lewis ra nwell was first arrested on the 8th of february after breaking into farm buildings and releasing animals. His First Release was in the early hours of the saturday the 9th. His first violent attack came later that morning shortly after 8 30am. He wandered onto another farm brandishing a stick and four foot saw. This man came out to help his wife after seeing his wife struggle to protect their livestock. I shouted to her get the police, quick there is trouble. He suddenly advance on me and swung the saw. I put up my arm to stop it and reeled off to one side. And i thought, this is not a safe place to be. So i turned and i ran, the fastest i ever ran in my life. He was trying to kill me, quite definitely. He made off, but he was soon arrested in nearby fields where he was found walking without his shoes. He was brought back here where his behaviour was described as bizarre. He urinated himself, tried to steal a stun gun and claimed to have lost his unicorn. Police felt he represented a risk to the public if released. They called Mental Health professionsals who did not attend in person. But they and a Police Doctor who did see him in person did not recommend he was sectioned. Instead, he was released pending further inquiries. I said what . He tried to kill me. I thought there was a good chance that he would come back and finish the job. After the second release, he made his way by taxi and bus to exeters st david station. He was captured on camera at 12 30pm outside anthony paynes dilapidated house. It seems this note calling for accommodation for the 80 year old resident and his cat attracted him. Anthonys keith friend found the body. He was huddled up in the corner on the floor. His left arm was behind his back. And i could see matter coming out of the back of his head. I checked his pulse, yeah, i knew he was dead. He was captured on camera again a short time after claiming his first life. Inside he killed 84 year old twins dick and roger carter with a spade he took from their garden. The violence would eventually come to an end here in Exeter City Centre in the early hours on february 11, but not before a final confrontation at this hotel. When he was refused breakfast, he turned violent. He was standing on the other side of the door and with a big butcher knife, he was talking about voices, some woman that was locked in a room upstairs. Iwas like. I was saying to myself i dont know what is going on but i need to do something. Despite receiving a head injury he fended Alexander Lewis ra nwell off. If you make the same mistake and your mistake causes people to die, im sorry, i am not accepting that. A jury has decided that Alexander Lewis ra nwell was not responsible for his actions. His surviving victims want to know whether others could have stopped him. Shortly after sentencing, superintendent mike west, who is head of serious and organised crime at devon and Cornwall Police, gave a statement. A trail based on insanity is a rare procedure and the court has heard medical evidence from independent experts who have assessed Alexander Lewis ra nwell over many months while on remand. They have concluded that he was suffering from a severe Mental Illness at the time of the events. These along with other Mental Health interactions carried out in Police Custody during february 2019 shows how complex and dynamic this case has been. The decisions made by devon and Cornwall Police during february 2019 were based on the legal parameters, professional Health Advice and Information Available to us at the time. During his time in custody, prior to their deaths, the defendant had a number of interactions with five Different Health care professionals who were involved in providing guidance and professional assessment. As a result, it was agreed that he was fit to be detained and interviewed and indeed confirmed that he did not need a full Mental Health assessment. We fully accept our responsibility is to look after those detained in our custody units. But it would be unreasonable to expect Police Officers or staff in this situation to have overridden decisions made by those who are trained, qualified and skilled in Mental Health. This has had a lasting effect on the local community and i would like to thank them for their resilience and their support. Our correspdondent sarah ransom is at exeter corwn court for us. Sarah, this is a hugely disturbing case with some real implications about how we treat people like this. Absolutely. The judge about how we treat people like this. Absolutely. Thejudge has described it as a disturbing case on so many levels when she was addressing the jury levels when she was addressing the jury this afternoon after they delivered those unanimous verdicts on the three charges that were before it Alexander Lewis ranwell. They came back with the verdict of not guilty on his defence of insanity. As you rightly say, there were a number of complex. Evidence from psychiatrist giving reasoning as to why they thought that. All three from the defence and prosecution interviewed him after he had been arrested and taken into custody. They all talked about his long history of Mental Illness. He detailed to them that he had been a section twice before and they went on to talk about the summer before the killings that in fact he had come off his medication. That he was happy in life, but he had a relationship break up that the psychiatrist said was the start of his descent back into psychotic behaviour. That that is when they talked about his diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. You are absolutely correct that the police from their point of view, there custody sergeant had asked for Mental Health advice. They had been in contact with a number of Mental Health professionals to ascertain whether Alexander Lewis ra nwell could be detained any further than that 24 hour custody period. He was in custody because he attacked a man with a saw. The Mental Health professionals although some have flagged a concern about his behaviour when the forensic medical examiner came to see him in a 19 minute interview through the prison doors were custody doors, he said at that time when he saw him, he presented as a calm individual, but he was engaging with him. His recommendation was he could be detained for that 24 hours, but before being released he should see a Mental Health nurse. That did not happen. The Crown Prosecution Service when asked if they could detain him any further on that gbh term, they were told no there was not enough evidence. And the evidence cannot be gathered within the 24 hour limit. So he had to be released. The police said they could not really do anything else. They gave him information about where to go to if he felt he was descending further and his Mental Illness became more severe, but at that point they had to release him. Hours later, we know that those three elderly men were bludgeoned to death. There is no disputing that Alexander Lewis ra nwell did that, death. There is no disputing that Alexander Lewis ranwell did that, he admitted that. His defence was a lwa ys admitted that. His defence was always that he did not know what he was doing at the time. And today the jury was doing at the time. And today the jury have accepted that defence. Sarah, thank you very much indeed. Our correspondent at exeter crown court. Hundreds of thousands of commuters in southern england face weeks of rail disruption after members of the rmt union on South Western Railway began a major strike. They will take part in 27 days of industrial action lasting until new years day. Passengers have been warned that only around half of services will run, including those to and from london waterloo, the countrys Busiest Railway station. Theo leggett reports. The picket line was in place early this morning at london waterloo as commuters faced a journey to work that was even more stressful than usual. South western railway, which runs services into london waterloo from towns such as portsmouth, weymouth and reading, is facing 27 days of disruption thanks to a strike called by the rmt union. And passengers were faced with far fewer trains than usual. The train pulling in behind me is the 7 37am service from guildford to london waterloo. Im going to try and get aboard it, but i suspect it is going to be rather crowded. I did manage to squeeze on board, but others were not so lucky. At earlsfield on the outskirts of london, people were forced to queue just to get into the station. Some 600,000 people normally travel on the South Western Railway Network Every weekday. The company runs 1,800 daily services. But during the strike, that figure is down to about 1,000. The dispute focuses on the role of guards aboard trains. On newer trains being introduced next year the drivers will be able to close the doors themselves removing one of the guards main duties. But the rmt says that that will undermine safety. The guard is the person that dispatches a train, makes sure no one is stuck in the doors of the train. And the management want to take that role away and put it on a driver who doesnt want it. The driver is busy enough. We have seen trap and drag accidents go through the roof. We have seen assaults on the train increase by over 100 in the last five years. And the last thing we need to do is get rid of the safety critical guard. The Train Company insists that passengers will not be put in danger. We are committed to retaining a guard on our trains with safety Critical Skills but we want to make sure that when the new trains come into service from the middle of next year they are operated in the best possible way to give our customers and more punctual service. Commuters who made it to london today seemed resigned to the situation. This isjust the beginning of the strike, it usually gets progressively worse. Lam i am slightly worried, guess. We paid for a full season ticket and i will lose money on it. It is very busy and uncomfortable on the platforms. Not quite sure how the rest of the month will go. So far it seems the disruption has been serious but not disastrous. The evening rush hour may offer a sterner test of South Western Railways emergency timetable. It is busy as you would expect in the busy station in the country. At the moment we are not in the busiest pa rt moment we are not in the busiest part of the rush hour. I think the critical part is coming. We will see whether southwestern can run and off trains to get people out. I think really some of the problems this morning, we were out on the trains service into waterloo, it was pretty bad. It was very overcrowded, some people could not get on certain services. But there were always trains after that. It was not mayhem and why disk wide disruption as feared. We will have to see how the rest of today goes over the next couple of hours and the rest of the month. As we heard from one of the passengers this is just the start. Many days and potential disruption. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel, if i may use that clear shake . There are plenty of cliches you can use. The talks collapsed on thursday. They are not back to talking today. We dont know if they well in the coming days. At the moment we are set for strikes every single day except for polling day and boxing day. I think what is different about this conference and it has just started. You have thousands of people arriving from all over the world, is the pressure coming from the outside. We have had reports from scientists saying the situation is looking bleak for the polls, from scientists saying the situation is looking bleakfor the polls, the oceans, land. Young people out striking calling for climate action. They un secretary general, his message could not be more stark that the window to act is closing. Governments need to step up. The impetus is there from the outside. This is the 25th round of these un talks, which gives you a sense of how long they have been going. Things seem to move at a glacial pace here. Whether the sense of urgency can meet the expectation here, we will have to see how it plays out over the next two weeks. Are there any concrete steps that could be announced at this conference . The key thing really for this conference is to get in place the rules and regulations behind the paris agreement. This was the agreement signed in 2015 by all the Global Leaders of the world. It was a big moment saying we should try and limit Global Temperatures to 2 degrees or ideally 1. 5 degrees. They are trying to get the mechanisms in place for that. 2020 is the big year for Climate Change because all of the countries involved have to put in their big new pledges for what they are going to do to meet the target. At the moment, the pledges are way off. At the moment everything needs to be put in place. There is a race to get the big new targets and begins here. As you talked about all the pressure there is for Climate Change protesters and so is for Climate Change protesters and so on, is there still a sense of frustration that some of the biggest countries and polluters are not actually doing enough to reduce Carbon Emissions . The developing nations are saying, we are the ones feeling the worst effects of family change. The ones who are doing the omitting really need to step up. The us is interesting. Donald trump is not here, he is in the uk, he has started the process of pulling out of the paris agreement. On the other hand, you have nancy pelosi here who is saying that america is still in, so is saying that america is still in, so the Global Politics around this is interesting. They can be small acts of kindness, grandiose gestures, but we have done it for about seven years now and it gives us some Human Interest stories, the ones that we did last year. When we first started doing them, nobody knew what was going on. We were giving them these bits of star shaped glass, but now it has been going for so many years here in the north west of england that when you do it and when you turn up and somebody pulls out a star to give to somebody, they know what it is and they know what it means. It has become a really nice fixture of our december output on bbc one in the north west. Everyday, giving a christmas star to somebody to say thank you for some thing kind they have done for some body else. Who sent you the first nomination this year . We have had hundreds of them. We started asking about them a couple of months ago. We will have the first one tonight was i went to the first one tonight was i went to the presentation on friday. It was a lady called barbara, who had a daughter called rosie. She was born with cystic fibrosis, and was 27 yea rs old with cystic fibrosis, and was 27 years old and needed a double lung transplant, and she had that back in 2015. That was the cue for rosie to really live life to the full, to make the most of the Second Chance she had been given and the good set of lungs she finally had. Sadly, in 2017, her body started to reject the lungs and rosie died. But when she died, the one thing she was absolutely keen on was that she should donate whatever organs she could from her own body, and she did, she donated her kidneys. As a result, two people were given the gift of life by rosie. Her mum and dad, barbara and alan, wanted to say thank you to the staff at the Blackpool Victoria Hospital in the transplant unit who had helped rosie through her own transplant, and then helped her as she died to become a donor. Listen to them. Every time we have been up here, she has been whizzed through and sorted out straight away, we have never had to wait for any treatment or anything like that. She has always been taken into the best possible place. They have kept us informed all the way along. If things started to deteriorate, they have had us in to tell us what to expect. There were four times we thought she wouldnt make it. Allen kept calling them. She just rolled with it. Even when she went up to have her organs harvested, the two nurses who looked after her stayed with her all the way through. Even though she had died . Yes. Sorry. A very emotional story. The survivors against terror group has asked for all Political Parties to provide better Mental Health support and access to compensation. Among those that signed a letter in the Daily Telegraph are survivors of the Manchester Arena bombing, the 2017 attacks on westminster and London Bridge and the 2015 shootings at the bataclan in paris. Figen murrayjoins me now herson, martyn hett, died in the 2017 manchester attack. She is one of the signatories of the letter and is calling for a martyns law, which will require all venue owners to adopt basic security plans. Thank you for being with us. We all have cameras these days, and it is easy to film something. If there is somebody who has filled that stuff, dont put it on social media. This is what they want. The same with the media, tv, newspapers, dont put stuff on the front pages. Dont put the terrorists faced on the front page, he doesnt belong there. Who belongs there are the victims and families. It is those people deserve the front page, not the terrorists will stop some people would say there is a balance there between what you are talking about, what the victims and their families what you are talking about, what the victims and theirfamilies might want, but also the publics right to know what has happened. Just name the name, dont show the picture. When you are in distress after an attack, you are so in emotional freefall, you after an attack, you are so in emotionalfreefall, you need that support straight away, really. How are you doing, two years on . For a few days, it is the centre of everybodys attention, and attack like manchester, then the world moves on to other news. When you are involved in such an attack, your life completely changes. Our world has been turned upside down, and otherfamilies will has been turned upside down, and other families will be upside down. It is very hard to get back to what used to be normal. People in Central Scotland whove been left without heating or hot water by a gas mains failure have been told they may have to wait five days for supplies to be restored. The issue has led to the closure of schools in the falkirk area. Our scotland correspondent, lorna gordon, reports. It is very cold here and in this wintry weather, engineers are warning that in the worst Case Scenario some homes could be without gas until the weekend. At the start of winter in this part of Central Scotland thousands have been left unexpectedly without gas to their homes.
