In an hours time, the Scottish National party will launch their manifesto with a warning that borisjohnsons pledge to get brexit done is an illusion. The partys leader, nicola sturgeon, will also demand that any future minority Labour Government would need to spend billions of extra pounds on the nhs in scotland to secure the support of the snp. Jeremy corbyn has admited some people on lower incomes could pay more tax under a Labour Government, despite a pledge that only the top 5 of earners would face increases. In a bbc interview last night, the labour leader was challenged over his partys plans to scrap the marriage tax allowance. Mr corbyn said those affected would benefit from other labour policies. That last story is astonishing, read more about it on the bbc news website. The labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, is about to hold a News Conference in westminster. Hes tweeted that hes going to make a major statement on the nhs and you wont want to miss it. We will have coverage of that coming up. We will bring you our exclusive investigation into claims of bullying being rife within the Beauty Industry in the meantime. Make up artists and beauty therapists have told us that the bullying ranges from minor name calling to psychological abuse, and with the workers having no recognised dedicated union, victims say there are few protections. As a result of our findings, the British Beauty Council is now calling for an independent body to be set up to look into claims of bullying and unfair dismissal. In a moment, well talk to one employment lawyer, who has handled hundreads of cases of bullying and harrasment in the sector. But first Ellie Costello reports on what happens when beauty turns ugly. The Beauty Industry isnt always beautiful. Its heartbreaking, actually, to think that an industry that were trying to really pull together is so at each others throats. I was diagnosed with depression, stress and burn out. I spent time in a facility. I was seeing grown women, like, strong women crying at their desks. It was so toxic and so harsh that they were desperate to leave. My friend, we was working at this boutique, and they asked her to not work the front desk because they thought that she was too ugly and too fat and it would stop people coming in. The Beauty Industry is big business. It contributed £14] billion to the uk economy last year, overtaking motor manufacturing and publishing. Such a big Business Needs a huge workforce. One in every 60 jobs is in the Beauty Industry. Weve been investigating bullying and bad practice. Ive spoken with more than 20 people who work in the british Beauty Industry who claim to be victims of bullying. Most of them say they are too afraid to go on record. They stem from director level of companies down to Makeup Artists on the shop floors of department stores. Ive heard accusations of abuse, blackmail and psychological bullying. So many of the people ive spoken with suffer from anxiety, depression, even suicidal thoughts. Nearly everybody says that the industry is facing an institutional crisis when it comes to bullying and harassment. Sarah had a senior role in an International Beauty brand. She says her boss was a bully and also claims she spoke behind her back, telling suppliers that she was sharing their confidential information. Sarah has since left the company. After that, i was only given junior roles within projects and i was taken off the project that id been working on very successfully for two years. I was ignored by hr and the board of directors. They treated me like i didnt exist. Many are fearful that if they complain, they will never work in the industry again. The Beauty Industry has no union, so employees of Companies Big and small find they dont have anybody to put their complaints to or seek advice from outside the company. Many of the people we spoke to have signed nondisclosure agreements, or ndas. It usually comes as part of a deal where employees are offered thousands of pounds, sometimes tens of thousands of pounds, for their silence around their employment. It means in the cases of bullying and harassment, victims often struggle to getjustice. As well as sarah, nicole is another woman in the same position, but still wants her story to be told. She worked as an executive for a beauty brand that we would all be familiar with. She says she was pushed out after telling her bosses she was pregnant. I was left out of meetings, i wasnt given information, they stopped ccing me into emails. And then with ten weeks within me coming back from maternity leave, i was told that i didnt have a future at the company and that i should just leave. And i was in floods of tears and sick to my stomach and i couldnt get. Really couldnt get out of bed. I was absent as a parent. I basically believed everything they told me. I believed that i was a bad. That i was a bad person. I was diagnosed with depression, stress and burn out. I spent time in a facility. I was really lucky. I received the best care and ive recovered. But so many people dont. And its notjust women who are affected. And then i got scouted to go to marbella. Wow zach is now a freelance Makeup Artist in essex. He loves hisjob now, but in previous work for big brands out in marbella, it hadnt always been easy for him. Being a guy in the makeup industry kind of goes against what women think you can do, which is sad. So there was a lot of times, like, are you sure you want him to do your makeup . Hes a guy. He doesnt know how to do makeup. People are greedy in that sense, you know . And they want everything to themself and they dont care who they throw under the bus. And were you thrown under the bus . My god, so many times. And then you leave, and theyre like, do you want to go for a drink . And you think. Youre like, yeah, because youve got no one else to do that with. But it affects you, whether its a year down the line, a week later or later that night, you get home, you think, oh, my god. And i think thats when i started kind of spiralling down a bit. Im not going to lie to you i went through a bit of a depression stage because i felt like everyone i had around me was fake. You talk about, you know, having to fit a mould and if you dont fit a mould, youre out. Yes. So, my friend, we was working at this boutique and they asked her to not work on the front desk because they thought that she was too ugly and too fat and that it would stop people coming in. Zach went freelance in the makeup industry after finding the environment too toxic. But there are people on the inside who are trying to make a change. Were here to meet lan Nguyen Grealis at the test shoot thejoshua kanes new collection, mythical creatures. So this is has giving her that bird impression in terms of shape. Beautiful. Its like me done well. Yeah. You know, if we put the feathers in and all that, you know. Shes a celebrity Makeup Artist, author and a prominent face at London Fashion week. But despite her success, shes also been a victim of bullying in her early career. So, especially from what ive been through, you know, ive used that to really fuel to be even kinder, to be even nicer and to really push that with my team. You know, its all about sisterhood, womanhood, you know, a lot of the girls have, you know, freedom to come and speak to me offside whenever they need to. Or if they need to let off steam, its fine. You know, i will always make sure that were all treated the same. Its very important that the girls feel like, you know, this industry is amazing. But if youre a really nice person, you know, you will sustain a great career. Whilst it has no union, the British Beauty Council represents the voices, opinions and needs of the british Beauty Industry. We took our findings to them. Its heartbreaking, actually, to think that an industry that were trying to really pull together is so at each others throats. It does fall on, really, the government because this isnt just a Beauty Industry related issue, i think this is a sort of nationwide issue and i think there needs to be some sort of ombudsman or industry body set up to make sure that there is a place, a safe place for people to go. The department of business said that through the equalities act employees are already protected against harassment in the workplace and they can always seekjustice at employment tribunals. The victims we spoke to said they were too afraid to take their ex bosses to a tribunal, and without a union, it would be a lonely and expensive ordeal. But its clear that withoutjustice, the impact of what theyve experienced is long lasting. I feel so much anger. Its not even anger. Its heartbreak. We will talk about whatJeremy Corbyn has been saying at a News Conference in a moment. He has claimed that the labour party have documents that reveal that the us are demanding that the nhs is on the table in any future trade talks. We will talk to norman smith, who is listening to whatJeremy Corbyn is having to say in just a moment. Lets talk to three people who are very familar with the workings of the Beauty Industry celebrity make up artist and author lan Nguyen Grealis, who has painted the faces of paloma faith and emma bunton, and was also a guestjudge for bbc threes glow up. Also with us is bernicia boateng, a celebrity make up and influencer who works with several love island stars including this years winner amber gill, and also owns her own studio in east london. And employment lawyer, karen jackson, managing director of the firm didlaw, who specialises in employment and discrimination cases and has handled hundreds of cases of unfair dismissal and bullying in the industry. Welcome all of you, thank you for coming on the programme. Why is bullying such a problem in the Beauty Industry . We talked about this earlier and i think it is something to do with the fact that it is an industry that is about glamour and it is intense and lots of people want to work in this industry. It can be quite catty. We have spoken to the people who have beenin have spoken to the people who have been in this tree, they might know better than me. But it seems to be a dog eat dog environment in this industry. There seems to be quite a lot of. The film shows the extent of the Unlawful Discrimination and bad behaviour. We will talk to you about some of the cases you have handled. Why do you think it is so toxic . Like karen said, it is all about beauty and looking a certain way. Being a black make up artist, for me, it has been a bit of a struggle, especially in the beginning of myjourney, just because people judge you based off what you look like. If i turn up on set and i didnt look like any of the girlsi set and i didnt look like any of the girls i was doing, if they were very light skinned, they might not believe i would be able to make them look great but i was literally trained to do make up on all skin. That was quite a struggle in the beginning. Why do you think there is such pitch he is . Pitch he psychological abuse on the other end. I came in from a different angle, self taught. I never set out to bea angle, self taught. I never set out to be a make up artist. Going in quite naive to the industry. I felt it was quite saturated. I felt may be that played a part in people feeling a bit threatened. By you . Maybe. From my experience, i heard some iuitiouis maybe. From my experience, i heard some futtiouis and maybe. From my experience, i heard some rumours and things said about me. Ijust went to the source and nipped it in the bud, i didnt take it personally. It does sit in the back of your mind and it is quite hurtful. When you are just trying to do yourjob and i absolutely love my job, it is difficult when you have to face those things. As an employment lawyer who specialises in disc of a nation, tell us about some of the horrific examples that you have come across, karen with discrimination. Just bad behaviour at work and discrimination. The film referenced returning to work after pregnancy had been treated badly. We know that 77 of women coming back to work after pregnancy are subjected to unlawful treatment. To work after pregnancy are subjected to unlawful treatmentm is astonishing. Is it any more acute in the Beauty Industry . You have one example of a woman who was going through ivf and tell our audience what she said to her bosses. She said she told her boss she was about to undergo ivf treatment and she wasnt pregnant and her boss said she needed to leave with a settle m e nt she needed to leave with a settlement agreement. There was a perception that if she was going to have a baby, she would take her eye off thejob have a baby, she would take her eye off the job and she will no longer be in the industry will stop some of the cases i have dealt with are even more severe. Somebody who was disciplined for not turning up to work, the reason being he was in a coma. But the employer still persisted in disciplining him. Seriously . Seriously. I am a litigator, i see all the bad stuff but what we are seeing in the Beauty Industry is reflective of what is going on elsewhere. There are huge problems with bullying at work. It causes psychological damage. One of the differences is, in this sector, there is no recognised or dedicated union. You referenced earlier that people perhaps looked at you, because you had a different colour skin to them thinking that you werent up to the job. Where would you go, if you wanted some help with that, some advice, some protection . Like yourself, i am self taught, i just didnt really understand so much what to do. I didnt know where the union was, or deal with howl was feeling with being mistreated at work. I tried to persevere and do make up to the best of my ability and if someone didnt trust me, i made them look better than everybody else that they understood i was just as good. It was a best attitude. Else that they understood i was just as good. It was a best attitudem isa as good. It was a best attitudem is a good work ethic but it wont work for everybody with some disc of a nation and bullying we are talking about today. The British Beauty Council as a result of our reporter, eddie costellos investigation suggests there needs to be some kind of independent body where all the freelances in the beauty sector could go to if there was an issue. I believe it would be really nice to get more support and feel more protected. I went through a similar case where i had to find help. I ended up looking to my agent, because i am from a session world, i had an agent who put me through to a lawyer and i spent four years fighting for my name. What was that issue . Bullied . Fighting for my name. What was that issue . Bullied . It wasnt bullied, but it was a hire company. Dont name names, obviously. Obviously just doing something that was, like, trying to take my name and i felt it was physical and mental bullying, because emotionally, like, for four years, i had one of the great lawyers and what they said to me was that the biggest way of working is to put kindness. Be more successful, keep fighting. At the end of the day, you are talented, you will get through. Again, thats the hope. It doesnt always mean that. Yeah. Im struck by the way you, both of you who are in this industry are saying, this stuff happens but if you work hard, you will get through it. It shouldnt be accepted, should it . Absolutely right, you shouldnt even have to deal with it. Right, you shouldnt even have to dealwith it. You shouldnt. I am right, you shouldnt even have to deal with it. You shouldnt. I am so happy that there is finally being light shone on this. However, when you are in there and you are just trying to hustle and make it, this is my passion, i absolutely love make up, i think i would do it for free if i wasnt getting paid for it. It is that passion that pushes you to persevere and then, you know, whatever the case is, you will still push to do it. But like you said, not everyone is going to be like me and not everyone is going to be Strong Enough to push against all the odds. We need to speak up to people that probably cant speak up for themselves. It probably perpetuates the problem because you are in an industry, you work really ha rd to are in an industry, you work really hard to get there, you stay there, if you make a noise or a complaint, the person who you might be complaining about has the power to eliminate you from that industry. Absolutely. There is a culture of hushed up. There is a shame it is a shame there isnt a union. The lady in the film referenced the government should do something but i dont agree at all. Employers should. The department for business said, if you have an issue, take your boss to an employment tribunal, which makes it sound very straightforward and cheap and its not necessarily the case, as you would know, as a lawyer. Absolutely. It is an access to justice problem. Every Single Person who gets bullied at work, doesnt necessarily have an employment tribunal case and it isnt necessarily a solution if you wa nt to isnt necessarily a solution if you want to keep yourjob especially. Employers should be looking at their cultures and saying what is going on here . I was against the same employer, a brand, several times about the same person who was bullying multiple different people. Isaid to bullying multiple different people. I said to hr, when are you going to do something about this person because im just going to keep taking money from you every time this person mistreat somebody . That person was left untouched. These people need to be weeded out. Absolutely. You shouldnt have to deal with this. Absolutely. You shouldnt have to dealwith this. I absolutely. You shouldnt have to deal with this. I completely agree. 0ne deal with this. I completely agree. One thing that has happened to me on more than two occasions now is being underpaid. And speaking up about that. And literally losing my job. Absolutely. And going on instagram and seeing somebody else doing the job i worked really hard to get. Because they can find someone else who will accept. Or finding out i am on set with other white make up artists who are actually getting paid way more than i am. Thats hurtful. Its unlawful its crazy. Let me read this message. Ive worked on a make up counterfor two and a half years in three Different Stores and the whole Beauty Department and environment is the most toxic environment ive ever worked in. Its completely broken my self esteem and even the company i worked for was a positive attitude one, the whole experience gave me the worst Mental Health and i hit rock bottom. They will no doubt be more comments and experiences from oui more comments and experiences from our audience. Thank you lan Nguyen Grealis, and karen, we appreciate your insight. It is something we will keep following. Send us an e mail if you have been affected. We want to keep following this story so if youve been affected by bullying in the make up industry please get in touch. Email us victoria bbc. Co. Uk or on twitter and facebook. Lets now hear from lets now hearfrom labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, in westminster. He says he has been passed hundreds of pages of documents which show the nhs will be on the table in future trade talks with the us. He is answering questions from journalists right now. Do you accept donald trump has already denied that the nhs would be on the table in any future trade talks and what interest would a future British Government have in doing a deal that would effectively make medicines unaffordable in this country . Why would any government have an incentive to actually sign a trade deal that involved that kind of equation . Thank you very much. Its no secret that American Companies wa nt no secret that American Companies want access to the uk drugs market. But in these piles and piles of documents, do you have evidence that uk ministers agreed that the Health Service should be part of trade talks, because the two are Different Things . 0na talks, because the two are Different Things . On a brief point, again, mr corbyn, you are given the opportunity last night several times to apologise to the jewish community, one of your shadow ministers, mr griffiths, has said the labour party should apologise to the labour party should apologise to the jewish community, have you changed your mind this morning about saying that . Thank you for your questions. Ive made it very clear anti semitism is completely wrong within our society. 0ur party did make it clear, when i was elected leader, and after that, that anti semitism was unacceptable in any form anti semitism was unacceptable in anyform in anti semitism was unacceptable in any form in our party or our society. And did indeed of its sympathies and apologies those that had suffered. And the party set up a process in which i proposed there would be a strong process and i proposed an Even Stronger process at the National Executive injuly that was agreed by the Party Conference and is therefore part of our rules and is therefore part of our rules and people who commit any acts of anti semitism are rapidly dealt with in the party. It affects 0. 001 of the party membership. We are saying one is one to many. I have acknowledged what the chief rabbi said yesterday one too many. I would say that very large numbers of people in thejewish community to have made it very clear that they do support labour, that they do recognise my absolute commitment that every community in our country will be safe under a Labour Government. And that we will work with every community in this country to ensure their safety, protection of synagogues, mosques and temples, schools, cemeteries and anything else that affects the life of a particular community. We have made that abundantly clear and i will continue to make that clear, because. We have to be one society, we have to work together, to defeat the rise of the far right and the scourge of racism within our society. And that is exactly why we published our race and faith ma nifesto published our race and faith manifesto yesterday, which made that very clear in relation to all communities. Abuse of a jewish family ona communities. Abuse of a jewish family on a train is vile and wrong, the use of a muslim woman walking down the street is vile and wrong. None of it is acceptable and none of it will ever be acceptable either within our party, by our party, or bya within our party, by our party, or by a government that i would be proud to lead that would be the most anti racist government youve ever seen, because that is what ive spent my whole life doing fighting against racism. And i will die fighting against racism, in any form. Its a poison and a scourge. The other points that have been raised, barry will answer some of them on the national Health Service. If you want to know whether ministers were involved in these talks or not, they sanctioned the talks, they are obviously fully aware of the talks and they are the ones that were declining to make the documents published and public in the first place. Indeed, they have led the talks from the start. And we know that. They have been involved in the talks come as a government minister. Yes. In effect, there are four ways in which a trade deal can. Most of the questions revolved around the same issue, so let me try and deal with it. There are four ways in which a trade deal can undermine our nhs. By the way in which disputes are settled. By what is included or excluded, which is sometimes called the negative list system. By the patenting regime that is adopted, that is the importance of extending the life of those drugs, so that the Drug Companies can gain more money from those patented drugs without the use of generics. And the fourth way is indirectly through the data regime, which we in the nhs have the best data in the world. Its been collected the longest and its the most comprehensive. Big pharmaceutical Companies Want to get that data, in order to be able to produce more drugs that they can then patented and sailed back to us. The control of that data regime is incredibly important sell back to us. Incredibly important sell back to us. All of these things other ways in which a trade negotiation, a Free Trade Agreement, can impact on our Health Services in this country. Ive got paul, toby from channel 4 and then pippa crerar from the mirror. Mr corbyn, given what youve outlined today, are you also suggesting a Labour Government would legislate to stop any of these trade practices happening . Would you legislate to protect data in the nhs, would you legislate to make sure there is no power to sue the nhs and no power to engage in Services Liberalisation . Secondly, youve always said that this election isnt about you but do you agree with Lord Kerslake that you we re agree with Lord Kerslake that you were right to suggest your leadership would be part of a conversation with liberal democrats and the snp in the event of any Hung Parliament . Toby . Victoria macdonald from channel 4 news. Two questions. Ididnt from channel 4 news. Two questions. I didnt quite understand your reasoning on the trade talks because isnt it the case in any trade talks that the americans for instance would put everything they want on the table and its up to the British Government to then negotiate a way toa government to then negotiate a way to a position that they want . Secondly, to corbyn, youve taken a neutral stance on brexit but isnt it the case that if there was no brexit, this wouldnt even be on the table . Brexit, this wouldnt even be on the table . We wouldnt brexit, this wouldnt even be on the table . We wouldnt have a forest of papers sitting on our knees now. Because we wouldnt have to negotiate a trade talk. And pepper . Pippa . Negotiate a trade talk. And pepper . Pippa . On the Climate Change aspect of the trade talks, the point made by the us in these documents is the us congress decided in 2015 that they would be no mention of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions in trade agreements and the trade mystery said the ban wont be lifted any time soon. How does labour, given its us legal issue, how would labour get round that and make sure that Climate Change and greenhouse emissions were on the table . Specifically, mr corbyn, was yesterday the worst day of your campaign so far . I love every day campaigning and yesterday was another day that i loved, because i go out all the time meeting people, listening to people, understanding what peoples fears and concerns are and im horrified at the levels of inequality, poverty and injustice that have come in britain since austerity came in in 2010. I am determined to win this election, to end austerity, provide homes for the homeless, and end the disgraceful levels of Child Poverty in this country. That is the message i carry out across the country and i will be doing that today and everyday until december the 12th. 0n pauls question, there are no talks with any other parties, we are fighting to win the election, not to form a coalition, we are not fighting to do a deal with other parties, we are fighting it proudly as the labour party on a manifesto and i hope we move into government on december 13 to start writing some of the rungs and injustices that austerity has brought to this country and im of the manifesto on which we are fighting the election righting the wrongs. 0n the point of trade talks and barry will deal with this as well, the points that vicky made about no deal, it is borisjohnson that has tried to threaten and no deal exit from the eu and keeps on pivoting to say that he would do a special trade deal with the us. I think these documents show the nature of those talks and when talks reach a point when exchanging text, it sounds like we are getting awfully near some form of agreement and the dangers that go with it. Our strategy is that within three months we will negotiate an agreement with the eu so that we have Market Access to europe and protect the good friday agreement and within six months we will put that to a referendum alongside remain. There will be an option to leave the eu but not wreck our important trading relationships with europe, or to remain within the eu. That is a way of bringing people together and our party is determined that that will be what we will do in government. The point about the legislation that we would introduce all the system we would adopt, we will not accept the idea that there is Investor Protection in the way in which trade deals are done, we would also make sure, and barry will speak on this, that protection of the environment would be absolutely part of our trade arrangements as well because clearly, every department of government has to play its part in getting us to net zero emissions as quickly as we can. If i can pick up on the issues around dispute settlement, which is one of the key areas in which the nhs can face undermining by trade agreements, you asked the question as to. Lets leave Barry Gardiner and Jeremy Corbyn the labour leader answering questions from journalists at a News Conference in westminster. The main thrust of the News Conference was that mr corbyn says he is obtained hundreds of unredacted documents which he says confirms the nhs would be on the table in future trade talks with the United States after brexit. A51 pages of unredacted documents and information. All of it here. He. His government released this. We have since obtained this. Which is a very different version of events. Perhaps hed like to explain why these documents confirm the us is demanding the nhs is on the table in the trade talks. These uncensored documents leave borisjohnsons denials in absolute tatters. Voters need to ask themselves some very serious questions. Is the nhs safe in Boris Johnsons hands . Weve now got evidence that, under Boris Johnson, the nhs is on the table and will be up for sale. Lets bring in hugh pym. Is this definitive proof in your view . We will need to see the detail of these documents. Channel 4s dispatches a few weeks back ran a story based on some documents which may be the same as these referring to meetings between officials from the uk and the us in washington, preliminary talks about a future trade deal in which pharmaceutical pricing was discussed. The american Drug Companies are frustrated in many cases that the price they get from the nhs for their drugs is lower than what they can sell in the Us Health Care system. Thats because medical regulators in the uk, different in scotland and england, are quite adept at saying what is value for money. What they want on the table is, we want a hard price that our drugs and what came out there i think is what mr corbyn is referring to. The key thing is, how advanced are these talks in this trade Investment Group . It is putting a lot of questions, the conservatives have denied the nhs is up conservatives have denied the nhs is upfor conservatives have denied the nhs is up for sale or part of these talks but if this document shows a certain stage of preparedness, that will be interesting to read. My understanding is this document is from a couple of years ago. Labour have been saying, after the dispatches programme, that a Free Trade Agreement with the us would add £500 million a week to the nhs drugs bill. We cant say that is true, can we . No, that was based on a projection by a medical Research Expert who is an expert on drug prices, an academic, although even he said this was based on the number of different assumptions. It is one experts projection but what labour are trying to put their finger on is that in a trade deal, why would the us do anything other than demand higher prices for their Companies Drugs . That would add to the nhss bill, how much buy, we dont know. Equally, the conservatives were saying there is no way that would be on the table. Of course, when these trade talks start, if its pro brexit trade deal its going to happen, everything could be up for discussion and its a question of where your red lines are. Thank you, hugh pym, health editor. We are going to speak to the snp treasury spokesperson Alison Thewliss in glasgow ahead of the snp ma nifesto thewliss in glasgow ahead of the snp manifesto launch which is coming your way at 11am on bbc news. I want to ask you for your reaction to what Jeremy Corbyn has been saying in this News Conference. Well, this chimes with what my colleague Philippa Whitford and others have been saying about the risks posed by trump to the nhs. This stands as a huge threat to the future of the nhs, particularly when you talk about the price of pharmaceuticals and the influence us Companies May have on the nhs. No British Government would agree to any increase in our drugs bill, would they . That would be electoral suicide. You would think so but this document would appear to show those discussions have been ongoing. From what i understand. We cannot trust borisjohnson what i understand. We cannot trust Boris Johnson with what i understand. We cannot trust borisjohnson with the nhs, we cannot trust the tories with the future of the nhs based on this information. It shows the sneaky backroom deals they are prepared to do which would put us all at risk in future. I want to ask you about your record on education. Latest figures show fewer than three out of five youngsters leaving Primary School in the poorest parts of scotland can read properly. That is disgraceful, isnt it . Im not sure on those figures because i have lots of those schools in my constituency. By our annual Scottish Government figures. The in my constituency had been working incredibly hard to make sure children attain the standards the schools in my constituency. And that they go on to great success. Ive no doubt teachers are working hard. What im saying, according to annual Scottish Government figures, is fewer than three out of five youngsters leaving Primary School in the poorest parts of scotland can read properly. Im not quite sure on what is exactly meant by reading properly within those figures. Let me tell you. 40 of pupils in deprived areas leave Primary School in scotland without meeting the expected literacy standard. thats what those figures say, ive not seen those figures today, and there are clearly challenges within there are clearly challenges within the education system. Within glasgow for example, we have many different languages spoken and children in parts of glasgow are learning english for the first time sometimes when they arrive at school and there are challenges in that as well. It isa are challenges in that as well. It is a very mixed picture across the country. But there are huge efforts going on and if you look at the statistics within glasgow, there have been credible improvements in attainment and achievement over the past ten years with more children achieving better results and then leaving two positive destinations, heading on to education, work and training and that is the broader picture. He said it was a mixed picture, do you accept your government is failing some school in scotland . I wouldnt because that isnt the picture i see when i visit schools in glasgow. These are your own government figures. Without having seen the figures i cant really comment in greater detail like ive given them to you, its straightforward, 40 of pupils in deprived areas leave School Without meeting the expected literacy standards. It is double that in affluent parts of scotland. Which is why we are putting money into those schools in deprived areas, through the attainment challenge and why schools are working incredibly hard to find new ways of engaging with pupils who may have other challenges. The snp has been in government for 12 years. We have and there are always ongoing challenges and always things we need to do better and we accept that challenge. What im saying is there is money getting into those schools in deprived areas and ive seen a huge difference that has made in schools in glasgow, for example, teachers are able to use Innovative New ways of engaging with children and looking across the curriculum and getting children learning and interested and getting people reading. The Scottish Government has issued schoolbooks to every primary one, two and three in scotland with a range of games and activities to get pa re nts a range of games and activities to get parents and Children Reading and learning together. I know the difference that can make, having children gifted books by the government, to engage parents who may not have access to books or may have had difficult experiences with reading in their own background. Its a big picture to change around and we are committed to doing that. 0n the nhs, your target is for 95 of patients to be seen within four hours. The latest figures show you are missing that by a long way. It seems the longer you are in power, the more you missed the target. All nhs patients right across the uk are seeing nhs patients right across the uk are seeing pressures nhs patients right across the uk are seeing pressures and struggles to meet those targets but the nhs in scotla nd meet those targets but the nhs in scotland is the best performing nhs in the uk. This is in the broader context of looking at pressures such as losing nurses through the eu. The eu nurse registrations have fallen through the floor since brexit. Those kind of delays and difficulties in getting staff contribute to those delays because there are pressures on the service that are not within our hands. People are choosing not to come to the uk because of the tory harsh brexit and that gives me huge sadness that people feel they are not welcome here. We have. You are missing their targets and have been for the last few years because of the westminster government, is that correct . These are very tough targets and we accept we want to be trying to meet them. Isnt your responsibility or missing them all the westminster government . This is common to all nhs Services Within the uk. We have outperformed the other nhss. Whose responsibility is it . Of course the Health System is devolved in scotland and we are glad it is because we are able to protect those services to make sure they arent being hived off to private services. So it is the Scottish Governments responsibility that nhs targets a re governments responsibility that nhs targets are not being met . governments responsibility that nhs targets are not being met . It is the Scottish Governments responsibility andi Scottish Governments responsibility and i wouldnt dispute that. Our nhs is in and i wouldnt dispute that. Our nhs isina and i wouldnt dispute that. Our nhs is in a far better position because of the Scottish Government, because health is devolved and we are able to ta ke health is devolved and we are able to take actions we need to to protect the nhs and boost the budget. The nhs in scotland is funded by £135 per head more than the nhs in england and what we are calling for is for the uk government to meet that per head figure to increase Health Spending in england so increase Health Spending in england so that we can get both Barnett Consequentials which will support our services which need to be addressed by that additional funding by the uk government. Thank you. They will be launching their ma nifesto they will be launching their manifesto live at 11am. An investigation by 5 live has discovered an increase in reports of drinks being spiked over the last five years. If its happened to you then we really do want to hear from you very alarming, particulary as we head into the Christmas Party season. 5 live discovered that, so far this year, Police Forces in england and wales recorded 564 incidents of people saying their drink was spiked. It mostly happened to women but it wasnt all young people and students almost 15 were over the age of a0. But with many not reporting these incidents to the police, some think these figures underestimate the scale of the problem. Lets speak now to colin mackie, whose son greg died exactly two years ago yesterday after a suspected drink spiking, 21 year old isabelle frew, who says her drink was spiked when she was on a night out in manchester last month, her friend cristyn was there when it happened and looked after isabelle, and elaine hindal, chief executive of drinkaware. Thank you for talking to us. Colin, you will be able to see colin and what he tells the audience about what he tells the audience about what happened to your son, greg, who died two years ago yesterday at. Good morning. Yes, two years ago, greg, who was a pupil at edinburgh college, they had a get together one night, just youngsters sitting together talking about what had been going on that day. Unfortunately, later on that evening greg was found collapsed in one of the toilet areas. The police were called but u nfortu nately areas. The police were called but unfortunately they couldnt save his life and we were told at ten past six on a sunday morning, saying your son has died due to a drugs overdose. What did the toxicology report show . When we got the reports back, it turns out greg hadnt touched an alcoholic drink. It looks like he was drinking soft drinks and there was the equivalent of five ecstasy ta blets there was the equivalent of five ecstasy tablets in his system, which then make the police think it was more likely to be a drug spiking incident, as someone who was going to experiment with drugs would never have taken that amount. They had done a big check on his background, found out he was fit and healthy and involved in Cross Country running, speedway, boxing, rugby, he was very interested in sport. He was going to make an anti drugs film. So they thought, yes, this is a possibility ofa drink thought, yes, this is a possibility of a drink spiking. Were just seeing a photo of your gorgeous son greg and im really sorry for your colin. You are raising awareness of this and im going to bring in isabelle because you believe this happened to you last month in a club in manchester. One of our favourite djs was playing in manchester, we go to uni in birmingham so we travel time to go and see him. Once we were there for about an hour before we decided to get a drink and be queued up decided to get a drink and be queued up at the bar, got one drink, it was a mango run slush and three quarters through the drink, my friend realised i wasnt ok. My legs werent working, my brain couldnt communicate with the rest of my body, i wanted to walk from a to b but i couldnt. I felt like my legs werent doing what they were supposed to be doing. What did you think was going on . First i was thinking, why is she reacting this way to alcohol, she hasnt consumed enough. When we decided to leave i thought, something isnt right. I was walking her through the club and leading herand was walking her through the club and leading her and i was thinking, was walking her through the club and leading herand i was thinking, her body shouldnt react this way, theres obviously something wrong. We need to leave. She was really sick and i thought, something has been put in her drink. Do you think that happened at the bar or as you we re that happened at the bar or as you were walking away and what would be the motivation . Once we got the drink we went into the crowd and i think when we were walking through the crowd it was easy for something to throw something into my drink. For what reason . I dont know. Maybe for satisfaction, enjoyment that theyve done this to a young woman or the way the body was reaction, i couldnt really move or speak or do anything if i was by myself, someone could have ta ken anything if i was by myself, someone could have taken advantage and im very grateful cristyn realised i wasnt ok and took me out of that situation before something bad could happen. Elaine, what is the advice . There is nothing that either greg, isabelle or cristyn did that you would necessarily change, is there . The main thing is to be vigilant, it can happen in any kind of venue but really im porta ntly, can happen in any kind of venue but really importantly, the symptoms mimic those of being drunk, particularly at first. Dont assume someone particularly at first. Dont assume someone is drunk, act quickly, as you did, to get somebody medical attention. But really importantly, their views have a key part to play. Their staff need to be vigilant, need to be trained and have a duty of care to make sure their customers are safe. What happened is the staff thought you were drunk and actually, you cant blame them. You are in a nightclub, it is 10 30pm, youll waiting to see a gig, it is the obvious conclusion from staff. was frustrating for you, trying to get me out and i wasnt cooperating and the staff werent cooperating either, it must have been annoying for you. Colin, having gone through your horrific experience, what is your horrific experience, what is your advice to the audience . Keep yourself aware and dontjust your advice to the audience . Keep yourself aware and dont just assume because youre not Drinking Alcohol that youre safe because grateful stinking a soft drink. There are things available, lids for bottles and covers that can stretch across glasses. That is a cover you can use, you can protect yourself, there are things out there to protect yourselves. Theres also a spike kit which is available, some bars have introduced this, if you feel your drink tastes a bit funny, dont drink tastes a bit funny, dont drink it, actually go and get it checked. This kit will show if it has been drugged. Finally, never leave your drink alone, if you walk away for a dance or whatever, and you come back to your table, dont risk it, ditch the drink. Thank you. I really appreciate it. Adrian says, i went out for drinks with my workmates, they spiked my lager with vodka and i was really ill, i had to be sick, they thought it was funny so be sick, they thought it was funny soi be sick, they thought it was funny so i never went out with these idiots again. Jenny says, my drink was spiked with a date rape hill, my friend and i became very unwell, it took us over a week to recover. I really appreciate you raising awareness. Thank you. Back to the speech from the labour leader. Jeremy corbyn has obtained hundreds of unredacted documents which he says confirms the nhs would be on the table in trade talks with the us after brexit. Lets speak to our political guru, norman smith, whos there. What did he claim . Jeremy corbyn said this document is evidence that the government is not saying no to the government is not saying no to the us in terms of selling off the Health Service because this is an awfully long winded way to say no. Their contention is these documents are the outcome of six meetings held over the last two or three years and shows the nhs is indeed on the table. There is a lot of detail but some of the things contained in the document are the demand on the us side for total access to the nhs market, they are talking about extending the lifetime of drug patents. The drug under patents costs a lot more than a pink tinted drug. Unpatented drug. At the moment for the nhs a certain drug costs £1800, under us rules it would costs £1800, under us rules it would cost £8,000. Mr corbyns argument is this is proof, he says, that the nhs is for sale. What it doesnt establish is whether ministers have actually agreed to any of the us demands, because although the papers contain the sort of wish list on the american side, there is not here any firm proof that the british side had said ok, we can do that. We get a clear idea what the us side want and it goes much further than just the nhs, so they are talking about food labelling, they are hostile to the idea of further food labelling, they are hostile to the idea of furtherfood labelling, they are also cautious about some of our employment rules, there is nothing about Climate Change, they are also wanting to change some of the rules on gender equality. The us demands are extensive, what we dont know is how far the British Government has gone along with them. I think what the documents show is that the talks are much more detailed and probably more extensive and may be much more advanced than we have been led to believe from some of the denials from borisjohnson believe from some of the denials from Boris Johnson and believe from some of the denials from borisjohnson and others. The key question is, does this prove a game changer in the election . Bbc newsroom live is coming up next. Thank you for your company today. Have a good day. Another wet start to the day for many parts of the uk, particularly around eastern areas of england. A lot of rain falling already, linked into this area of low pressure which is slow moving. It will be with us all day today and wrapped around it all day today and wrapped around it a few weather fronts. The main one is across a few weather fronts. The main one is across eastern a few weather fronts. The main one is across eastern england. Thats continuing to bring outbreaks of rain, elsewhere, still some showers into this afternoon. Further heavy rain in the far north of scotland. Temperatures not as high as yesterday but still in double figures for many of us. But rain continuing across parts of lincolnshire into yorkshire, northumberland into the afternoon, there is a warning for the met office because we could see up to 30 millimetres. It is falling on already saturated ground so could lead to some flooding issues. Further outbreaks of rain into thursday. The rain moving further south so eventually something a bit drier and brighter but colder in northern parts. Youre watching bbc newsroom live its 11am and these are the main stories this morning.
