But the lib dems say they can plant twice as many trees. And now on bbc news, Victoria Derbyshire takes a look back at some of the highlights from her programme this week. Good afternoon. The duke of york has told the bbc hello and welcome to our programme. He has no recollection of ever over the next half an hour, meeting the woman who says she was made to have sex well bring you some with him when she was 17. Of the highlights and original journalism from our programme over the last week. In an exclusive interview first, two clips were published this with newsnight, to be broadcast week depicting borisjohnson tonight, Prince Andrew insisted he didnt remember Virginia Roberts, and Jeremy Corbyn endorsing each despite the existence other for Prime Minister. Of a photograph showing the two well show you them in a moment. Of them together, said but these false, manufactured videos to have been taken in 2001. Are known as deep fakes and were published by a group he also said it was wrong to stay calling itself future advocacy. At the home ofjeffrey epstein, they specialise in the challenges after he was found guilty of child sex offences. Of new technologies and they want at the time he felt it was the all Political Parties to work right and honourable thing to do. Together to tackle the threats posed our royal correspondent, by fake videos and other disinformation online. Nicholas witchell reports. Heres our elusive film. The year is 2010. Hi, folks. Prince andrew is in new york. Im here with a very hes videoed staying at the Mansion Special message. Of a convicted child sex offender once upon a time, i called called jeffrey epstein, for a kind and gentler politics. Whod just been released from an 18 month prison sentence. These two deep fake videos have hit the internet, andrews presence gives rise to questions put to him by bbc newsnights emily maitlis. But you were staying at the house. Yes. Of a convicted sex offender. He sighs heavily. It was a convenient place to stay. I mean, ive gone through this in my mind so many times. At the end of the day, um, with the benefit of all the hindsight that one can have, um, it was definitely the wrong thing to do. Um, but, at the time, i felt it was the honourable and right thing to do. And i. I admit fully that. That. That. That my. Judgment was probably coloured by my. Um, tendency to be too honourable, but thats just the way it is. And then, theres andrews alleged friendship with the then 17 year old Virginia Roberts, who was on epsteins payroll. Shes alleged that andrew seduced her. She says she met you in 2001, she says she dined with you, danced with you at tramp nightclub in london. She went on to have sex with you in a house in belgravia belonging to ghislaine maxwell, your friend. Your response . I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady, none whatsoever. You dont remember meeting her . No. It was in 2001, according to Virginia Roberts, that she had sex with andrew on three occasions, including one orgy. The palace has denied that. In 2008, epstein was convicted of procuring for prostitution a girl under the age of 18. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison. It was in 2010, after epstein had been released from prison, that andrew visited him in new york and stayed at his mansion. I stayed with him. Thats. Thats. Thats the bit that. That. That. As it were i kick myself for on a daily basis. He chuckles. Because it was not something that was becoming of a member of the royal family. And we try and uphold the, um, highest standards and practices, and i let the side down, simple as that. But nothing about this story is simple. Jeffrey epstein cant answer questions he took his own life in august. As for andrew, lawyers for Virginia Roberts want him to make a statement under oath. The us authorities would most certainly like to hear his account of everything he witnessed. Earlier, i spoke to nicholas and asked him why he thought Prince Andrew had decided to speak to the media now. Well, newsnight, emily maitlis, said they were in discussions for some six months. Prince andrew is always keen to talk about his work but, clearly, no interview could have been done without addressing all of this. As i understand it, there were discussions over a number of months with, interestingly, andrews office, rather than with the central royal communications, the Buckingham Palace press office. They have been left rather out of all this. Now, whether their advice would have been to go ahead with this interview, im not so sure. But i think what determined it was andrews own determination to do. An interview. Its high risk, its a gamble for him and his reputation. It has placed it across every front page in this country and its getting a lot of international attention, as well. It has given legs to the allegations against him. He will be hoping, obviously, that he will be able to rebut them in an effective and credible way. And that his wish, of course, is to move on, draw a line, and move on. Its his 60th birthday quite soon and i think he wants to just be rid of this. But whether that will be the net effect of all of this is perhaps a little naive, but it is important to qualify that by saying that until we have seen and heard the entire interview. Hour long programme, i think it is. It is. Unwise to kind of prejudge what will be the outcome of this. In terms of what we do know of its content at this point, what do you highlight at this stage . Well, the two central areas. I was going to say the relationship with Virginia Roberts, they absolutely deny there was any relationship, but what contact was there, if any, with Virginia Roberts . In what way does he credibly deal with her allegations of sexual contact . We will have to wait and see. It is important to say, of course, that all along, Buckingham Palace has absolutely categorically denied any impropriety and all of that. But we need to hear it from andrews own mouth later on tonight. The other aspect of this is his friendship withjeffrey epstein. As he acknowledges, thats where he is caught out, there is really no mitigation that he can find for that, for visiting and continuing a friendship with a man who, by 2010, was a convicted child sex offender. Now, andrew is already on the record as saying that he went to new york to see him to break off the friendship. Quite why you need to stay for several nights in his mansion in new york in order to break off a friendship is one of those questions. But we need to hearjust how authoritatively and with what degree of conviction he actually deals with these issues in the interview tonight. And the phrase let the side down is interesting, because it implies the sense of looking at this through the prism of what it does to the royal family. Yes, and i think he will be intensely aware of that. Hes a proud man. He will know that his mother must be dismayed at the impact that this has been having and continues to have. We are told the queen approved him doing this interview. I suspect by this stage, at the age of 93, sometimes it is said hes her favourite son, or whatever, and if he comes along and says, i want to do this, i believe it is the right thing to do, she will have said, well, if you are absolutely sure, go ahead. But i think there will be great concern within Buckingham Palace at the impact that this is all having on, as it were, the good name of the royal family. And they will be very anxious, obviously, to protect that. And you can see the full interview in a bbc newsnight special on bbc 2 and here on the news channel tonight at nine oclock and also on the iplayer. The Fire Brigades Union has called for a complete overhaul of the uks fire safety system, following a large fire at a Student Accommodation block in bolton last night. In the past hour, borisjohnson visited the site of the fire, where two people were injured. Witnesses described seeing the flames spreading rapidly up the ouside of the six storey building. Dan johnson is there. Dan, tell is a little bit about the Prime Ministers visit and what was said. The Prime Minister has been here in the last half an hour or so visiting the scene of the fire, the student block and visiting bolton university, where there is a hall that has been set up as a Refugee Centre essentially. So the Prime Minister went to see where students are sheltering and where people are bringing donations of food, quilts and blankets, that sort of thing. Because there is a whole block of accommodation for students that is 110w accommodation for students that is now not available while the fire Service Continue damping down here and start to investigate what caused this fire. The Prime Minister didnt touch you make any comment. He met people at that centre, he spoke briefly to some of the volunteers, some of the students who are taking refuge there. Just congratulating them on the effort that people have shown in pulling together and bringing things to be donated for stu d e nts bringing things to be donated for students who may have lost things in this fire or at least cant access their belongings because this accommodation is going to be sealed off for some time as this investigation get straightened away. But the Prime Minister didnt make any open comments to the cameras. But no doubt he has come here very quickly, he cancelled his Campaign Events today after starting the morning campaigning in north nottinghamshire. He cancelled other planned events to come over here to bolton. I think probably aware of some of the similarity is that there are with this fire and the what happened at gren fell. The extent grenfell. We are told there was cladding on the exterior of this building but not of the same type that was involved in the Grenfell Tower fire. That was involved in the Grenfell Towerfire. 0ne that was involved in the Grenfell Tower fire. 0ne resident that was involved in the Grenfell Towerfire. 0ne resident who ive just been speaking to said that the cladding had been replaced after grenfell. But that is all the sorts of issues that will have to be investigated. But i think given the criticism that theresa may faced, the criticism that she wasnt on the scene of the Grenfell Tower fire quick enough, that she didnt meet those residents as openly as people might have liked. The Prime Minister borisjohnson has might have liked. The Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been might have liked. The Prime Minister borisjohnson has been very quick to come here to bolton and to talk to the people who have been affected by this fire. And no doubt they will be looking for answers as to exactly what started this fight and how it did spread very quickly. Because there will be a lot of concern about there will be a lot of concern about the apparent spread of six floors of this building. People would want a nswe is this building. People would want answers as to whether this is linked to the sort of issues that led to the gren fell fire the gren fell tower fire to the gren fell fire the gren fell towerfire to spread the gren fell fire the gren fell tower fire to spread so quickly. Joining me now is Steve Mackenzie a fire safety consultant. You will have seen that video footage, the speed of the spread of this fire, not turn one style cladding, we are told. What you read into that . This is the warning calls that myself and other independents have been given Central Government since grenfell. It is notjust that cladding, there are others, expanded polystyrene systems, there is a full range of building types that currently a re range of building types that currently are compliant fire hazard and the government is trying to rewrite the legislation. And you say they shouldnt be compliant . No, these. They dont comply with the intention of the building standards and the fire Safety Standards but too many historic loopholes were allowed, which isntjust a uk issue,is allowed, which isntjust a uk issue, is a global issue. Because we have seen incidents around the world. And when you look at these pictures that we are showing now, they indicate that kind of problem. Yeah, this is a permissible cladding system yeah, this is a permissible cladding syste m u p yeah, this is a permissible cladding system up until we force the government to test High Pressure laminates. They havent released any funding for replacement. Conscientious clients out there and Property Owners have replaced the more Hazardous Material with this material, believing it complied, now to find it doesnt. Right, thats an important clarification isnt it . Because there has been money released for some types of cladding to be replaced but your point is that not all fall into that category. Definitely. Despite the government issuing High Pressure laminates, they havent released the funding and effective advisory notes and they havent even tested the full spectrum of cladding systems that we believe present ongoing fire hazards. So when the general secretary says its time for a com plete secretary says its time for a complete uk overhaul before its too echo that . Very much so. We were lucky last night. If that happened after midnight or in the early hours, when students had been out partying in town, we had could have been pulling out fatalities. One of the points emerge there and again it is very early days to establish why this might be happening but quite a lot of people talking about fire alarms going off quite often, in other words the fear that when an alarm goes off you dont know whether it means it or not. Definitely. See this problem in Student Accommodation up and down the country. We have a problem with incorrect fire alarm detection alarm systems in Student Accommodation. The wrong type. We get to frequent false alarms and unwanted alarms, which then put people in a complacent position and they dont respond when there is actually an incident. Ok, thank you very much for coming in. The headlines on bbc news. The duke of york has said he let the side down by staying at the home of convicted sex offenderjeffrey epstein, adding it was the wrong thing to do. 00v an investigation is under way into the cause of a fire at a Student Accommodation building in bolton after more than 200 firefighters spent 9 hours putting it out. Senior labour party and trade union figures are meeting in Central London today to decide which policies will be included in the partys election manifesto. Labour has already announced a number of policies, including a pa rt nationalisation of bt to make broadband free for everyone, and extra spending on infrastructure. 0ur Political Correspondent iain watson joins us now. Any news, ian . The latest i can bring you is that this could be quite a long process because a p pa re ntly quite a long process because apparently theyre only about halfway through discussing the contents halfway through discussing the co nte nts of halfway through discussing the contents of the manifesto. The discussion started around midday. That said, i think some of the more contentious issues have already been discussed. Essentially, what theyre deciding is which of their policies agreed by delegates at their annual conference then become a firm ma nifesto conference then become a firm manifesto commitments. You mentioned some of what we have had announcements than optically controversial but that has been his battle over freedom of movement. Labours policy. Also extend it and some strategists, some people in the party felt that this was effectively a gift to the conservatives on the issue of immigration. They have been very keen to keep that word extend freedom of out of freedom of movement out of the manifesto. Lets keep more work into regulation of the Labour Market to ensure that people can harm be undercut by cheap migrant labour. That has been the idea but the wording has been quite contentious and argued about. Elsewhere, there was also a policy agreed at the annual conference for agreed at the annual conference for a target of 2030 for britain to become, if you like, net Carbon Emissions free. Thats always been controversial, some unions think it is an unrealistic target. Again, there is a been a debate about the wording. Something that should be seen as an aspiration rather than a deadline. There are also some policies that havent been announced. They re working policies that havent been announced. Theyre working in a form of words to suggest that there will be offering help to women who are caught out by the increase in the state pension age, didnt have enough time to plan for their retirement. And they are saying that they are engaging in a process to talk to campaigners about compensation. So that is a policy which some people think could appeal to older voters in particular. And im told there is probably going to be another so called retail offer as they call them. Free prescriptions in england but is likely to be accompanied by free dental checks as well. So some are quite small policies, i think if you stand back from it all though effectively what labour are saying is we should be extending the role of the state, a more active role of the state in the economy. But they say theyre doing this in behalf of voters and consumers. That is, if you like, very, very big policies like partial nationalisation of bt right through to extending the scope of the Health Service on the kind of Services People can get free of charge. Thank you for the update. The snp leader Nicola Sturgeon has called on the scottish people to deny Boris Johnson the majority he craves. Speaking on the campaign trail on the east coast of scotland, she said that evidence suggests that brexit will hit the north east of scotland harder than anywhere else. 0ur news correspondent Alexandra Mackenzie sent this update. Nicola sturgeon has been out campaigning across the north east of scotland. She was here in arbroath, the home of the arbroath smokie. Her main message today has been about brexit. Scotland voted to remain within the European Union and Nicola Sturgeon has said today a vote for the snp is a vote against borisjohnsons hard brexit. In her words, a vote for the snp is a vote to stop scotland being taken out of the European Union against its will. There are 13 tory mps across scotland and Nicola Sturgeon has said that the snp is the main challenger in all of those seats. She has said that this election is probably the most important in her lifetime. Nicola sturgeon has also said, again, she would like an independence referendum in 2020. She said that scotland would be better if the power was within the hands of the scottish people. Now, we are here in arbroath. This is where the declaration of Scottish Independence was signed in 1320. So possibly no coincidence that Nicola Sturgeon was here earlier today. Elsewhere, the conservatives and the liberal democrats are both promising to plant millions of trees to tackle Climate Change, if they win the election. The tories said there would be 30 million new trees every year by 2025. While the lib dems are pledging to plant twice as many. And our correspondentjon donnison has been with the leader of the liberal democratsjo swinson. Well, jo swinson is targeting labour seats in london that she believes the liberal democrats can pick up from them. Shes here with her big yellow, or, to my mind, her big orange bus. This morning, shes also been talking about planting trees, 60 Million Trees a year from 2025, so double what the conservatives are pledging. That would mean some million hectares more of forest by 2045. She planted a tree herself up in hampstead this morning. And she was asked whether the project wasnt perhaps a little too ambitious. No, i think we need to be ambitious, first of all. We are facing a climate emergency. I was met this morning by a group of children and this is about their future. And we need to make sure that we do everything that we can to avert that disaster to protect our planet for their future. Planting trees is one of the best things we can do. Its good for air quality, its good for our mental health, we all like being around trees, and, most importantly, it is good because trees absorb Carbon Dioxide emissions. And so they are a crucial part for how we get to a net zero carbon. What liberal democrats are proposing by planting 60 Million Trees a year, its actually ambitious, but it takes us back to being a bit more ambitious than what we were managing to do at the end of 1980s, when we were planting 30,000 hectares roughly every single year. And we can get back to that and we can do more, and we should be doing more because of the threat that we face. Theres no room here for half measures, when were talking about protecting our childrens future. You hinted at this a moment ago, but what is the wider liberal democrat approach in london going to be here . Well, this afternoon, jo swinson is in bermondsey. She has been at a pizza restaurant, an italian restaurant, and she has been speaking to eu citizens, some 3 million of them living in the uk, and she has been talking to them about their concerns, about the uncertainty caused by brexit and, of course, the lib dems pitching themselves very much as the party of remain. But it is interesting, if you look at the seat where we were this morning, hampstead and kilburn, in 2017, the lib dems got only 7 of the vote. But they are targeting that, believing they can take it off labour because in those areas, they did vote very heavily remain in the referendum. In camden as high as 75 of people voted remain. They believe that by pitching themselves as the party of remain, they can win seats such as that of the labour party. The Environment Agency is warning of high water levels in the west of england as water continues to flow down the river severn and avon. 0ne place particularly susceptible to flooding is tewkesbury in gloucestershire, where properties have already suffered damage. Andrew plant is there for us and sent this update. They call this the island of tewkesbury and you can see why, although people here see this scene pretty much every year. This bit here is supposed to be a river. This is the river severn going past us pretty quickly here. All the way back on the horizon there, behind those trees, theres another river, the river avon. And the bit in the middle there, for about ten months of the year, that is just a field. But at the moment of course it is basically a lake. And thats normal, that happens, as i say, almost every year. The problem is when it starts to sweep into the areas where people live and thats beginning to happen already this year. Now, the worst flooding here was back in 2007. They had really high water levels, hundreds of homes were flooded. They are talking about this year possibly being the worst since then. And everybody you talk to on the streets here, the locals are keeping one eye on the water levels, people taking precautions, weve seen people putting up floodgates today, notjust on theirfront doors but also on their gates too. And those will be effective as long as the water doesnt get more than about 12 inches high. If it does, it starts to spill over and into their homes. And weve already seen a couple of cellars that are flooded with water. People getting the pumps on already to get rid of that. But theyve got much bigger pumps on standby, standard kit really if you live by one of these rivers, to get rid of the water if it does start to come into their homes. Now, the Environment Agency says its a delayed reaction. So the rivers swell with the rains from the past few days and eventually they meet here and they reach a peak. And they are expecting that to happen probably sometime early this evening. So everybody here in tewkesbury and the Environment Agency too keeping a very close eye on what happens with the waters here. Andrew plant in tewkesbury. Now its time for a look at the weather with stav danaos. It has been rather cleverly across much of the country today, glimmers of sunshine here and there but this evening and overnight we will hold on to evening and overnight we will hold ontoa evening and overnight we will hold on to a lot of cloud. This weather front bring an increase in cloud to scotla nd front bring an increase in cloud to scotland and northern ireland. Sunday, a similar sort of picture, still this weather front across parts of Northern England and wales. Heavier bursts of rain across the north east, so quite wet across the day. Glimmers of brightness in the midlands and south. It is going to be another chilly day. This area of High Pressure builds in for monday and tuesday across the uk, so we will see a nice window fine weather with plenty of sunshine, albeit cold with plenty of sunshine, albeit cold with frosty mornings.
