The french owner of peugeot, psa group, is exploring a merger with its us italian rival Fiat Chrysler, according to reports. A deal between the two carmakers would create a business with a combined market value of nearly 50 billion. If the plan goes ahead, japans nissan and the french government will own about 7. 5 apiece of the new, merged company. Our Business Correspondent mariko oi has more on how this deal could really turn the global Auto Industry upside down. Fiat chrysler is at it again, mariko. Tell us more. Thats right, Fiat Chrysler is at it again. Remember earlier this year it tried to merge with frances renault, but they didnt go too well. I guess this discussion confirmed, is psh owing to ta ke discussion confirmed, is psh owing to take advantage of it. And for Fiat Chrysler, it is the latest attempt on its belief that the car industry is in desperate need of consolidation. Talks have been on and off throughout the year, but they apparently broke off during Fiat Chryslers attempted merger with renault and those talks started recently. Both companies declined to comment on the report. What has this been doing to share prices . Their shares in europe will start trading shortly on the report, but Fiat Chryslers shares jumped more than 796, chryslers shares jumped more than 7 , while psas also rose by 5 . This year, interestingly, shares in psa have risen some 5 compared with 196 psa have risen some 5 compared with i for Fiat Chrysler. The question of course is how will the french government see this move, because it has a 12 stake in psa and it played a role in the collapsed merger between Fiat Chrysler and renault. But analysts think that is likely to be less of a barrier, so we will see. But definitely worth monitoring as trading starts in europe. Thank you mariko oi the detail on that story. Us lawmakers have accused boeing of engaging in a pattern of deliberate concealment as it sought approval for its 737 max 8 plane to fly. Was quizzed by the Senate Commerce committee. The accusation came as boeing chief executive Dennis Muilenburg was quizzed by the Senate Commerce committee. In october last year, a boeing 737 max operated by lion air crashed, killing all 189 people on board. Five months later, an Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed, killing all 157 people on board and leading to the grounding of the entire 737 max fleet. Issues with the planes computer controlled flight stabilisation system were linked to both crashes with questions being asked about how much boeing knew about the fact that it could push a plane into a nosedive. Lets get more on this story from david madden, market analyst at cmc markets. Good morning, david. From your perspective, how did he do . Not great, to be honest, he was accused of having a cosy relationship with the federal aviation administration. He denied this, stating this was clearly a business relationship. But there were some pretty intense accusations. At one point he was described by a us lawmaker as manufacturing flying coffins. And certain employees at boeing expressed concerns and were aware of the glitches or potential problems with the anti Styling Technology months before the disasters that took place Dennis Muilenburg, so Dennis Muilenburg had an extremely tough time and is likely to have a tougher time when he is back in washington, dc today. And the issue is really for boeing, this fleet of planes, the 737 max, critical. Theyve invested so much into this fleet and they were selling really well worldwide. They were indeed, and unusually, there hasnt been that many cancellations in the grand scheme of things. It is also worth pointing out that many airlines, be it lion air and likes often put these orders well in advance. So for boeing, the real cost is going to be lost opportunity. Orders would normally be racking up in the last five or six months or 12 months but it didnt get. And in this continuing process being sold, the business in relation to the 737 max is going nowhere. Costs are building up, lost opportunity, storage costs are increasing as well, sally. This is going to cause a massive write down for boeing in the months or quarters to come. David, thank you so much for getting up so early for us at cmc markets in london. I know your colleagues will be arriving soon, not too far behind. I said lets quickly figure out whether our assumption is correct. Reid was concerned about my judgement. He was seeing my inability to make the hard decision, my inability to have the strategic sense of where we are going. When someone is telling you your failings, its very hard not to get defensive. But i had to reflect and say i made the right person to lead this company . Do i have the skills that will be needed . I think it out early what im good at, and what i enjoy doing is the early stage. But the skills that help you get the company off the ground are a different set of skills than what are required to bring it forward as it gets larger and the scale changes.
