Coming up on sportsday on bbc news, we will have the news of the five british sides in the Europa League action, including wolves coming from behind to beat bratislava. Good evening. The Prime Minister has called on mps to agree to an early general election in december, effectively conceding for the first time that he cant take the uk out of the eu by the end of this month, as promised. Borisjohnson said if mps approve an election, he would allow parliament more time to scrutinise his brexit deal. Tomorrow, the European Union will announce its decision on the Prime Ministers request for a further extension beyond october 31st, which was forced on him by parliament. On monday, mps will vote on mrjohnsons call for a general election but he needs the backing of two thirds of mps for it to go ahead, but labour arent saying whether theyll support it. If mps do agree to an election, it will take place on thursday 12th december the first december election for more than a century. Heres our Political Editor laura kuenssberg. Is there any clear way out of the storm . Downing street wants a route to a general election. After weeks of negotiation with brussels, number ten did strike a deal but mps rejected the Prime Ministers plan to force it through at top speed, so now he wants to force them to go to the country. The way to get brexit done is, i think, to be reasonable with parliament and say, if they genuinely want more time to study this excellent deal, they can have it but they have to agree to a general election on december 12. Election on december 12th. Its time, frankly, that the opposition summoned up the nerve to submit themselves to the judgment of our collective boss, which is the people of the uk. Youre essentially trying to blackmail parliament with the threat of an election in order to ram through your bill. No, come on, weve had three and a half years. Not looking at this bill. Well, most of this bill is, of course, very familiar to parliamentarians. What makes you think that the opposition will give you your way this time . I mean, they could just keep you hostage. They could. But i think it would be absolutely morally incredible if they were to do so. After all, this is a party, the labour party underjeremy corbyn has called repeatedly, endlessly for a general election. If mps do not agree to your demand for an election, what will you do . To be absolutely clear with you, we would campaign day after day after day for the people of this country to be released from subjection to a parliament that has outlived its usefulness, that has fulfilled its function, that is refusing to get brexit done. Is everyone in the cabinet backing an election, ms truss . Even some of his cabinet, though, are not convinced this is a good idea. We should make sure we try to get everybody on board. And its simply not in the governments control. Prime minister, are we heading for a general election . The Prime Minister needs two thirds of mps to back him to get his election. Theres so many of us and theres. Labour might be ready to take the stage, ready for a fight. Crowds of their members might want an election but plenty of mps do not. The leadership wont say yes or no until the eu answers the governments request for a delay. Take no deal off the table and we absolutely support the election. Ive been calling for an election ever since the last one because this country needs one in order to deal with all the social injustice issues. But no deal must be taken off the table. But the smaller parties are tempted if brussels agrees a delay. The liberal democrats are going to keep fighting to remain in the European Union and were not going to get involved in Boris Johnsons tantrums. Borisjohnson is playing games and we should make sure that we dont dance to his tune. The opposition parties need to show leadership and make sure that we determine when and how an election is going to be called. Boris johnson, though, may find himself trapped in downing street. This is the third time number ten has tried to call an election. Lucky for who, this time . And laura joins me now. So how likely is it there will be an election on december the 12th . Remember, Boris Johnson has election on december the 12th . Remember, borisjohnson has tried this twice before and failed both times and tonight, really important to understand it is not in his control. And the opposition parties are all going to be thinking about this extremely carefully. Of course, traditionally, opposition parties would leap at the chance of a general election but we are not in normal times and inside those parties, particularly the labour party tonight, there is no vision, there is a dilemma. Labour is not clear about what it is going to do next there is division. That is why when we get the decision from the European Union on exactly what kind of delay the uk will be offered on brexit, the opposition parties will be poring over every word, every condition, before they come to their final conclusion. They do every condition, before they come to theirfinal conclusion. They do not wa nt to theirfinal conclusion. They do not want to be seen to be dragged into the Prime Ministers ploy, his gambit he has put down to try and ta ke gambit he has put down to try and take control of events he is not in charge of, so at this stage it is too early to tell. But the eu decision that was expected tomorrow, that might now bump into monday. And if on monday, two thirds of mps dont back this call, they dont get enough support, what happens then . Borisjohnson is threatening to turn what is already a strange and broad political situation into something even more extraordinary. He vowed if mps even more extraordinary. He vowed if m ps vote even more extraordinary. He vowed if mps vote it down, his government will stop bringing any other business to the house of commons and all they will do, day after day, again and again, try to get mps to back them in a general election in the belief that, in the end, the political gravity and the political fed up environment here in westminster will force mps in the end to change their minds. But they cannot be sure of that at all in downing street denied, just as they could never be sure that they would be able to meet their brexit halloween deadline, which now looks like is a big promise that Boris Johnson made back in the summer and is something that is now vanishingly unlikely for him to be able to keep. Laura kuenssberg in westminster, thank you. Police say the 39 people found dead in a refrigerated lorry in essex were all chinese. The container had arrived in essex from belgium overnight and was collected by a lorry driver from Northern Ireland. He is being questioned by detectives on suspicion of murder. Forensic teams have begun the task of removing the bodies of 31 men and eight women from the container. Essex police say the case is now the largest Murder Investigation in its history. Ed thomas reports from essex. Under police escort, by private ambulance at night, the first of the 39 chinese nationals have been removed from the lorry trailer at the port of tilbury docks. Police said the priority was preserving their respect and dignity. An u nwa nted their respect and dignity. An unwanted reminder, too, of what happened nearly 20 years ago in dover. Here, 58 chinese immigrants suffocated in a lorry. It took months for all those who died to be identified. Sam doesnt want to remember. He moved to greys from china a0 years ago grays. Remember. He moved to greys from china 40 years ago grays. When i heard the news this morning, the 39 people of chinese nationality i thought, why, how . It has happened again. He lives and works close to where the bodies were found this week. It said 39 people died, struggling in freezing cold in the container, in the dark and no one helped. This is now a Major International investigation. Belgian Authorities Say the container arrived into the port of zeebrugge at about 2 30pm on tuesday afternoon. It left there, heading across the channel, arriving at purfleet in essex and at 1 05am yesterday, the trailer was collected bya yesterday, the trailer was collected by a lorry. Half an hour later, ambulance staff discovered all 39 bodies inside a container. Vic makes the same journey to the port of purfleet. These are the cheques he does every day. Obviously, if anything was in there, you would see it straightaway. Seeing people jumping out of trailers, jumping out of containers, running around. What are the feelings amongst drivers . Everyone is terrified that they are going to find someone in their vehicles or worse. In 2016, the National Crime agency warned that smuggling gangs were moving from major hubs like dover to smaller ports like purfleet. They will only be caught if they get out of the trailers. This man worked at purfleet at the time of the nca report. He didnt want to show his face. It happened daily. What was the largest number of people . The largest i saw were vietnamese, there we re largest i saw were vietnamese, there were 30, 32 of them. You just became used to it, as horrible as it sounds. Some of them had broken legs, one that was trying to run away from security outside, not big security, about four people, with crutches, trying to run away, some holding children. And the security at purfleet . Nowhere near enough. Tonight, police are still questioning the lorry driver suspected of murder. He has been named in Northern Ireland as 25 year old mo robinson. It will ta ke 25 year old mo robinson. It will take a lot of time to move all of the bodies and to find the answer is that they need. Investigations into the tragedy are continuing in zeebrugge and attention will also now turn to china, and trying to indentify the victims. To identify the victims. Well speak to John Sudworth in beijing in a moment, but, first, Damian Grammaticas in zeebrugge. Damian, what are the Authorities Saying there tonight . Sophie, well, today, the belgian federal prosecutor has said that they are looking into this to try and determine both where these chinese migrants were put into this trailer and, also, who might have organised it. What the port authorities here are saying to us is that they do not believe it happened here at the port, they believe it could have happened some distance away, possibly even outside belgium and the reason for that is that they believe that the refrigerated trailer arrived here at this quayside already closed and already with a seal on it, and that is important because the standard procedure then is that that trailer gets a minimal check outside and thenis gets a minimal check outside and then is waved through. It is only if there are signs that the seal is broken that it would be inspected and very few of those containers are scanned with x rays, which is the only way to find people inside. It is the soft sided trucks that migrants tend to hide in that get checked with sniffer dogs and probes for Carbon Dioxide to look for stowaways, but what the authorities here say is they do believe they will have a wealth of information because every truck that arrives here is photographed, the cab would have been identified, the drivers identity would have been taken, the documents for the shipment would also have been checked and all of that gives investigators information to work on, as they try to identify those who might have organised this and tried to profit from it. John stood with invasion, clearly the authorities here will now be trying to identify those who have died. What are people saying invasion . In beijing. The chinese authorities tell us they are still trying to gather information. For now we know nothing about who these people were or where exactly in china they came from. There is, of course, a profound sense of shock being expressed on social media that Something Like this could have happened again. In previous incidents the 58 people found dead in the back of a lorry in doverin found dead in the back of a lorry in dover in 2000, for example, or the 21 Chinese People who drowned off morecambe picking cockles in 200a, in those cases they were brought to the uk by the snake head gangs, the notorious chinese criminal underworld that runs these people smuggling operations. What is interesting, sophie, is that in recent yea rs interesting, sophie, is that in recent years demand is thought to have been falling away. The chinese Economy Today provides far more opportunities, of course, than it used to come out even for those who still look for work in the black market economies overseas, well, today flights and visas and passports are far more easy to come by. We will need to wait for more information. But what this dreadful discovery in essex may tell us is that for the most needy and vulnerable workers here in china, those criminal networks are still very much in operation. John sudworth in china and Damian Grammaticas in belgium, thank you, both. A british man who fought against the Islamic State group has become the first person in the uk to be convicted of a terrorism offence following a retrial. Aidan james, whos 28, was found guilty of being in a camp where terrorist training was being carried out by a Kurdish Group, the pkk. June kelly reports. Aidan james set off for syria in 2017. While hundreds of uk foreign fighters headed to the middle east to join so called Islamic State forces, he was one of a much smaller band of britons on the other side. He attended Training Camps run by two Kurdish Groups opposed to is. Prosecutors said terrorist training was being carried out at both camps and just by being there, aidanjames was breaking uk law. He eventuallyjoined the front line with the Kurdish Group the ypg, an ally of the west. This man, who uses the pseudonym mesa gifford, was one of the other britons involved in the fight against is and he met aidanjames. I think aidan was caught up in something much bigger than himself, really. He was motivated by compassion, he wanted to put himself between the Islamic State that was butchering the yazidi people and the rest of syria. Last time aidanjames stood trial, the jury couldnt reach a verdict. In the first trial, the judge instructed the jury to clear aidanjames of the main terrorism charge he was facing. And before the trial, thejudge questioned why he was being prosecuted when there hadnt been prosecutions in other similar cases. Today, aidanjames wept as the jury convicted him of one charge. In a note, they said they were sympathetic to his motives. He will be sentenced next month. June kelley, bbc news, at the old bailey. A life extending drug for Cystic Fibrosis will now be available on the nhs in england after a deal was reached with the Pharmaceutical Company that makes it. The drug improves lung function, reduces breathing difficulties and can be given to children as young as two. It should be available within a month, as our Health Editor hugh pym now reports. For liz and shane, this was a day they feared would never come, the day when the nhs in england agreed to fund a drug for their daughter annabels Cystic Fibrosis. Thank you. Its not completely sunk in. Its just such a relief. Its just amazing. Just, yeah, been dreaming about this day for four years. And we finally have it out there now on paper. Cystic fibrosis is a debilitating condition affecting the lungs, which can fill with fluid. The drug orkambi is said to improve lung function by a0 , but it can cost up to £100,000 a year per patient. Though the new deal is understood to be ata though the new deal is understood to be at a lower price. About 5000 patients are likely to benefit. What do we want . Orkambi liz and other families protested at westminster, calling for access to the drug, but talks between the manufacturer and nhs leaders and ministers stalled. The Scottish Government reached a deal last month. Now it has been agreed that orkambi and two other Cystic Fibrosis drugs can be provided in england. This is a great deal, firstly because it means the nhs has access to these life changing drugs at a fair price for the taxpayer and secondly because the manufacturer, vertex, is now fully engaged with the processes to assess these drugs and future drugs they have in development. These are just some of the daily treatments which annabel needs right 110w. Treatments which annabel needs right now. Liz says the new drug will make a big difference. For us, having more certainty, that safer future, thats just what its about. As pa rents we thats just what its about. As parents we just want our daughter have the best chance in her life. While annabel and other patients will get access, formal assessment by nice will not happen for two yea rs. By nice will not happen for two years. They will weigh up the benefits. Hugh pym, bbc news. Dozens of young elephants that have been taken from their families in zimbabwe are thought to have been flown to china today after being bought for zoos and animal parks. Animal welfare groups have condemned the secretive trade, saying these animals were separated from their mothers a year ago and will be traumatised. But officials in zimbabwes wildlife parks have defended the move, claiming the money raised will save other animals after a devastating drought. Our Southern Africa correspondent Andrew Harding has sent this report. Secret footage of several dozen young zimbabwean elephants in an enclosure, waiting to be shipped to china for the rest of their lives. Theyve been in captivity for a year already, separated from theirfamilies. The zimbabwean Authorities Say selling them is the right thing to do, there are simply too many elephants in the country. The money theyll earn from china will help to save other animals now at risk from a terrible drought. In the last two months alone, at least 55 elephants have died of starvation and thirst. Theres no food, theres no water. And this situation is worse than in many years and it is happening, that is why we have been saying to the international community, yes, these are our problems, allow us to trade. Earlier today, its believed this cargo plane flew perhaps 30 of the elephants out of zimbabwe, but the process was highly secretive, prompting fears of corruption and provoking outrage from Animal Welfare groups. Well, sadly, they are in for even more of a miserable life than what theyve already had, after being ripped away from their families and their mothers and. You know, they are going to be living in a hellhole, in captivity. This is the kind of park where the elephants may end up. More than 100 have already been sold to china, but, next month, new International Rules will make this sort of trade much harder. Zimbabwe insists selling a handful of animals serves a greater good, but campaigners say thats not the point, that elephants live in close family groups and their young should not be stolen from them. Andrew harding, bbc news, johannesburg. The remains of general franco, the fascist dictator who ruled spain for nearly four decades, have been exhumed from a vast mausoleum in madrid, and reburied. Franco came to power in the 1930s after a brutal civil war which claimed the lives of around 500,000 people. Spains Prime Minister said the dictators veneration in a public space had been a moral affront to democracy. General francos family went to court to try to stop his body being exhumed. Allan little has been following the story. The franco family were not allowed to drape his coffin in the nationalflag. For today, modern spain is very publicly disowning his legacy. Not his relatives, though. They tried to stop this exhuamation in the courts and lost their final appeal last month. They made clear their enduring loyalty. But francos grandiose public resting place has come to symbolise something discordant in a modern democracy the lionising of a dictator. He was, until they lifted him away today, the only one of the 20th centurys fascist leaders to retain such posthumous acclaim. Even so, many here opposed this exhumation. Norberto pico, of the nationalist spanish falange party, accused the socialist government of rewriting history. But to the victims of francos dictatorship, his vast public tomb was an offence, glorifying fascism. Its immense basilica was hollowed out of solid rock by the forced labour of republican prisoners. One who survived the labour camps that helped to build it told me, this place should now be allowed to fall quietly into dereliction. The building is a monument to the victory of a crusade. The wounds of the civil war are still open. And i think that the presence of a monument like that is deepening into the new generation the sense of division. In a country still haunted by its past, this is a moment of painful symbolism the dictator removed from his place in the public realm and given back to his family for a private reburial, no longer the object of officially sanctioned public veneration in spains democracy. Spains transition from fascist dictatorship to mature democracy has been remarkable. But spain is still divided on how to make sense of its fascist past. A civil war that ended 80 years ago is still being laid to rest. Allan little, bbc news, madrid. Thats it. Coming up on bbc one, question time with fiona bruce coming tonight from south shields. First, its time for the news and weather where you are. Have a very good night. Goodbye. Hello there. Thanks for your company on sportsday this evening with me, ben croucher. In the Europa League for the five british sides as celtic stun lazio with a late winner not quite as late and not quite as spectacular as arsenals though. Pepe rescued them against Vitoria Guimares and a blow for wales ahead of their Rugby World Cup semi final, as Liam Williams is ruled out through injury. An entertaining evening to mark the Halfway Point of the Europa League group stages. Drama was safer closer to home. The hero for the couple of sublime free chicks in the last ten minutes. They did not offer any home comforts, dreadful defending keep totte n ha m comforts, dreadful defending keep tottenham the chance to put victoria ahead. Seeking out gabriella, but arsenals defence was exposed again taking back the lead much to the despair of the home support. Pepes free kick was perfectly placed but how quickly the mood can change. Three goals, three winds from three and top of the group. Because of previous racism, they found a loophole. Free tickets for thousands of children created a very different atmosphere to welcome wolves and after ten minutes, the site kept the kids happy. It wasnt until the second half that the wolves awoke and shooting from distance, to give the keeper grief. A good ball but he was not allowed to get on the end of it. The penalty award is given another chance and he scored. Despite losing, for a second yellow card, they went second in their group. In serbia, the results, Manchester Uniteds opponents played their last two european games behind closed doors because of racist abuse. Harry maguire was given the armband for the first time but had to be reminded of his captains duties. Back from injury and raring to go, he was inches away, but retaliation from partisan also hitting the post. Just before half time, the teenager was obviously brought down, anthony giving united the only goal of the game and a precious away victory. Not a defeat in sight, the two scottish sides, celtic earned a late victory with a stay top of their group, rangers earned an impressive point away. There was plenty for his stance to sing about, confident that ray and kristis efforts was a reflection of that against the post, it was as close as they get. Instead it was him that went into ahead but with him that went into ahead but with him visiting an excellent move. Celtic was still making plenty of noise and with the equaliser.
