Samba, jump on it and well ask if mikes hip thrusting take on the samba is enough to see him through to next weeks strictly. The weather today isnt looking too bad at all. For most of us some sunshine on offer and the forecast for the beginning of the week is not looking too bad either. Good morning. Its sunday the 20th october. Our top story borisjohnson has responded to his brexit setback by sending a letter to the eu, asking for an extension to the uks withdrawal date. But hes refused to sign the document and sent a second letter warning against any further delay. Mrjohnson was legally obliged to ask for an extension. Thats because mps voted yesterday to withhold approval of his brexit deal, until all the necessary legislation was in place. Heres our Political Correspondent jonathan blake. Another decision and without further delay. Mps voted yesterday to hold off approving boris delay. Mps voted yesterday to hold off approving Boris Johnsons delay. Mps voted yesterday to hold off approving borisjohnsons breaks a deal until all the laws to implemented had been passed. a deal until all the laws to implemented had been passed. I will tell our friends and colleagues implemented had been passed. I will tell ourfriends and colleagues in the eu exactly what i have told eve ryo ne the eu exactly what i have told everyone in the last 88 days that i have served as Prime Minister that further delay would be bad for this country, bad for our european union, and bad for democracy. Today is an historic day for parliament, because it said it will not be blackmailed bya it said it will not be blackmailed by a Prime Minister who is, apparently, prepared, once again, to defy a law passed by this parliament. And so the Prime Minister was forced to request an extension to the Brexit Process. A letter sent, but not signed by boris johnson, red. A second letter was also sent, making clear the Prime Ministers view and the governments policy was that further delay would be bad for the uk and the eu. What was dubbed Super Saturday saw some angry scenes at westminster, despite the request for delayed the government is keen to press on with its plans in an attempt to give mps another vote on the Prime Ministers deal on monday. Jonathan blake, bbc news. Lets speak now to our Political Correspondentjessica parker, whos in westminster this morning. Good morning to you. My favourite brexit question, so much easier to ask that answer, what on earth happens next . And tell us more about these letters stop Super Saturday yesterday did not go quite according to plan as far as borisjohnson is concerned. It was in the end made to send that letter to the eu asking for the extension. But asjonathan was outlining, he did not sign it. I have highlighted in pink letting the gaping hole you would expect Boris Johnsons signature to be. Now, alongside that letter, asjonathan was outlining, he sent another one basically saying he doesnt really mean that, that he thinks an extension would be a bad idea. And thatis extension would be a bad idea. And that is going to infuriate a number of mps here. Downing street saying this approach totally lawful. Think legal challenges are expected. Boris johnson also saying in his letter to the eu that he plans to bring forward the legislation relating to the brexit deal this coming weekend remains confident that he can still get the uk out of the eu by october 31. What more do we know about the next few days in terms of the legislation coming forward and how the first half of this coming week my pan out . One of the things we will be looking out for is the reaction from the european union. Donald tusk, the European Council president said last night he had received this letter. Eu sources saying it could take a few days in of what they will do let next. Donald tusk has to consult eu leaders. Borisjohnson will be hoping the eu is a little bit ambiguous as to whether they will grantan ambiguous as to whether they will grant an extension and that will wrap up the pressure on mp5. You ask what will happen next. We mentioned the legislation that to be brought forward , the legislation that to be brought forward, but it looks like the government is going to try and have another meaningful vote as soon as tomorrow. Now whether the speaker, john bercow, allow that to happen, we will have to wait and see. Yesterday we had Super Saturday, although dont think every body thought it was particularly soupy in the end. Maybe tomorrow will be manic monday and tuesday tumultuous tuesday. The list could go on and on. Working on these alliteration ts, on. Working on these alliteration s, marvellous. Mentioning our good friend ambiguity as well. There is a lot of that around. Much more to come on that throughout the course of the programme. Hong kongs Anti Government protest leaders want to see a big turnout in planned marches today, despite the risk of arrest. Police have declared the protest illegal, citing concerns over public safety. Thousands of people took part in a peaceful vigil yesterday. The protest is organised by the civil human rights front its leaderjimmy sham was attacked by men with hammers in hong kong on wednesday. A curfew has been imposed in parts of the capital of chile where violent protests are continuing. The demonstrations in santiago began in response to a planned rise in metro fares. They have since spread to other cities, despite president ial promises to suspend the move. The military was brought onto the streets of the capital to help Police Control the protests. The duke and duchess of cambridge have paid a second visit to a childrens village in lahore in pakistan, after thunderstorms prevented their return flight to islamabad. Its understood that the duchess was particularly keen to return to the organisation, which provides support to more than 150 orphans in boarding homes. The longest non stop commercial passenger flight has successfully landed in sydney. The qantas plane had taken off from new york 19 hours and 16 minutes before. The airline is considering whether to begin regular non stop flights between the cities. It says aircraft will include exercise areas for economy passengers. You would think you would feel a little bit stiff after that. A few people who are not feeling so stiff last night, and strictly, of course. Guestjudge Alfonso Ribeiro revived a classic scene from the fresh prince of bel air, and who better to show it off with, than mike. Mike and his partner katya danced a samba tojump on it by the sugarhill gang. But it was alfonso who brought a bit of the carlton magic with him. What we are going to do. We are going to come out here and lets do it together one time. So. Jump on it jump on it and then youve got to get. Cheering. Applause. Thank you that was one extraordinary moment last night when a beam of light seem to emerge from mikes crotch. Which dan walker pointed out on social media. Something seen that can never be unseen. One person said they recoiled in horror. Not about a particular moment but the performance after all. 21 points. More on strictly a little later on. It is eight minutes past six. After parliaments first saturday sitting in 37 years, what happens next in the Brexit Process . Lets take a look at how the next few days, and even years, might unfold. Eu leaders will now consider the Prime Ministers request for an extension to the brexit deadline. Ministers will publish the Withdrawal Agreement bill, which would put the deal into law. The government may even ask mps to back borisjohnsons agreement in principle as soon as tomorrow. If a deal is approved, the transition period will last until the end of December Next year, but could be extended for another two years if a new trade deal proves complicated to negotiate. Were joined now byjoelle grogan, a lecturer in constitutional law at the university of middlesex. Thank you very much for your time. I suppose he spent much of yesterday trying to get your head around what was going on and i hope you can explain it. The amendment which we will hear a lot about, say what it was, what happened yesterday, and why some mps felt it was a necessary action. Absolutely. The leftward amendment was asking the house of commons to approve the Withdrawal Agreement. The main thrust of the amendment was we will withhold our approval until an important piece of legislation comes into effect, until an important piece of legislation is passed. Another reason that became so important was that it meant no approval would be given yesterday and if no approval for the Withdrawal Agreement was given yesterday then the benn act obligation would kick in. That was for the Prime Minister to request a further extension to the article 50 process. A three month extension until the 31st of january 2020, that was the letter that had to be sent by 11pm last night. The letter was sent. The request was sent stop and now we have a request being considered by the eu leaders. Just to remind everyone, any extension to the article 50 process must be agreed unanimously by the European Council stop that means every head of all the other Member States must all agree to that extension. And thats what is going to be considered over the next few days. As you say, it will be considered. It is certainly not the that the Prime Minister s deal is dead in the water, by any means. That will still go through the parliament and mps will debate. As far as the eu is concerned there are quite a options open to them now. Well, the big question is whether or not that time is needed. From a legal perspective time is very, very important. In orderfor the time is very, very important. In order for the Withdrawal Agreement to become law four things need to happen. One, the house of commons need to approve it by a motion. Two, from the uk site, we need that legislation, that legislation must become law. Three, the European Council, by a qualified majority, must approve the Withdrawal Agreement, and also the European Parliament must give their consent. Now, from a uk perspective that lawmaking is challenging. This piece of law will be one of the biggest pieces of legislation, certainly in my memory, in my lifetime. This will have a radical change in the constitutional foundations, have a radical change in the constitutionalfoundations, social, legal, the political aspect of the uk. This is a huge piece of legislation. Its not something that we normally see debated within nine days. Within the time that is left before the 31st of october. To give an example, the last big piece of bread that legislation that we saw was in 2017. The talk, altogether, 36 days of debating and legislating between the house of commons and the house of lords before that became more house of lords before that became more that took. So from a legal perspective, time is not only of the essence, because we still have that no deal brexit deadline of the 31st, but time is also needed to consider the legislation, to consider the Withdrawal Agreement. Yes. Just to sum up then, it looks unlikely they will pass that legislation before the 31st of october, unlikely but not impossible, we should say. So that looks like were not going to brexit on the of october and even less likely we will brexit without a deal. This will all come down to whether or not that extension is granted. Remember, the extension is required to have unanimity in council, 27 governments must agree to that extension of three months. Thats something we will find out probably within the next few days. Thank you so much your time. Fascinating for you and anyone in your field of work. Fascinating for you and anyone in yourfield of work. We fascinating for you and anyone in your field of work. We appreciate your field of work. We appreciate you coming on and speaking to us this morning. Not even daylight there. From middlesex university. What must the atmosphere be like in the house of commons is a what was the atmosphere like . It was extraordinary. You could hear the noise out of the windows of the testers gathering for the peoples vote campaign. You could hear them chair when the letwin amendment you we re chair when the letwin amendment you were discussing past when the government was defeated cheer. You had a sense from mps this is a big moment, meeting on a saturday for the first time in 32 years. Even though, as we have got used to, it became a crunch point again. All right. Its time now for a look at the newspapers. All of them focus on this story. Lets look at the front pages. The house of fools is the headline in the mail on sunday, referring to the decision made in the commons yesterday to approve the letwin amendment and further delay brexit. The telegraph reports on borisjohnsons decision not to sign the letter sent to eu leaders asking for a further delay to when we leave the eu. It also refers to another letter the Prime Minister has sent to donald tusk in which he says a further delay would be deeply corrosive. The Observer Says mrjohnson could face fresh court action after rejecting a delay to brexit. It also features a photo of crowds of pro eu protestors in westminster yesterday. Inevitably a huge debate around the numbers. Some people said 1 Million People marched yesterday. And the sunday mirror refers to saturdays commons drama with one word humiliated saying there are new doubts over whether the Prime Minister will get his deal approved. Well, it is time for the weather now. Lets go away from all of that, isaid it now. Lets go away from all of that, i said it was dark in westminster and dry at the moment but how is it all looking tomasz . One thing i can tell you at least on the weather front, it is a little bit easierfor us front, it is a little bit easierfor us to predict what is going to happen over the next day and the next few. The forecast for today is pretty straightforward. There is a lot of fine weather on the way, not necessarily clear, blue skies but the low pressure that has been plaguing us with showers for the last few days is finally starting to get out of the way. This big gap in the cloud, you can see just here across the mid atla ntic, the cloud, you can see just here across the mid atlantic, that is pushing away, but is a large area of High Pressure and extending from the azores, it is called the azores high because it is thought of originating where the azores are, but i think for today, we still have a northerly wind, there are still some showers affecting parts of scotland, one or two sneaking into the north east of england, but the vast, vast majority of the country will have a dry day today. The best of the sunshine southern wales, south midland, southern wales, south midland, southern counties here. Elsewhere, i think it will be just scattered cloud. Reading nippy out there right now. I think this coming night will be fairly nippy across Northern Areas once again. In the south, you can see not quite so cold this coming night. Right now in london it is around three or four degrees and this coming next night, it will be around 10 degrees, quite a temperature contrast across the uk. There is a weather front that will well the weather i think across east anglia and the south east tomorrow so it is not a very large area of the uk here that is going to get rainfall, obviously a lot of People Living here, so we are talking about sort of rain from norwich to london, maybe as far as sussex therefore a time, buti maybe as far as sussex therefore a time, but i am pleased to say that the vast majority of the country will have a fine day so if you look at it, is pretty much looks dry right across the uk but it wont be of course because in the south east there will be some rain in the morning. That is out of the way and then on tuesday, High Pressure still with us, the weather front isnt1 million miles away, they are clipping the north of scotland so i think he has stronger winds and a little bit of rain therefore our friends install in the Northern Isles but most of the uk, looking fine and the best of the weather again across the south of the country and temperatures may be up to 16 bear in london, 12 degrees in the north. So that is tuesday and lets have a look at the next few days or so. The weather tends to stabilise a little bit, certainly by the time we get to wednesday. Thursday it is still fine but there are indications that later on in the week, i friday, things could turn a little bit more unsettled once again but at the moment, you know what . The weather, at least, there is nothing to dramatic happening. The news is somewhere else, away from the weather. Back to you guys. 0. So much, we will take that. We can do with a little bit of calm. Oh, dear, when we are reporting on politics, it is more unpredictable than we are being asked to forecast weather. Least with the weather, you can just look out the window. Now its time for the film review with mark kermode and jane hill. Hello, a very warm welcome to the film review on bbc news. And as ever, mark kermode is with me and has had his fill of films.
