When that clears most of us, we will see a return to bright skies, some sunny spells and the odd shower. But beyond that, the forecast trip remains unsettled. More in 15 minutes. Good morning, its wednesday the 16th of october. Our top story the parents of harry dunn have refused to meet the woman involved in the crash which killed their son during a visit to the white house. President trump offered Charlotte Charles and tim dunn the chance to meet Anne Sacoolas who unbeknown to them was waiting in the next room. Mrs sacoolas, who is married to a us diplomat, returned to america days after the crash which killed the 19 year old, claiming diplomatic immunity. Duncan kennedy has more. Arriving at the white house, harrys pa rents, arriving at the white house, harrys parents, charlotte and tim, had no idea they were about to meet president of the united states. They spent 15 minutes with donald trump. Afterwards, charlotte said at one point, the president held her hand. But she says they still dont know if the woman who knocked down harry would return to the uk. Allan i asked him again. I said would return to the uk. Allan i asked him again. Isaid if would return to the uk. Allan i asked him again. I said if it was your 19 year old son or your son, no matter what age, you would be doing the same as me. He was holding the same as me. He was holding the hand at the time and said yes i would. He said maybe we will try and push this from a different angle. Harry dunn died six weeks ago after his motorbike collided with a car in northamptonshire. The car was being driven on the wrong side of the road by Anne Sacoolas who later left the uk, despite being the main suspect. Ina stunning uk, despite being the main suspect. In a stunning surprise, President Trump told harrys parents that mrs sacoolas was waiting in the room next door and wanted to meet the couple there and then. But they refused, saying talking about harrys death with Anne Sacoolas must be done in a proper controlled setting. The fact that this case has even made it to the white house has stunned charlotte and tim. Just six weeks ago, they were grieving for harry after that car accident in the northamptonshire countryside. Now, after a ll northamptonshire countryside. Now, after all they have been through, they say that all they ever wanted was to seek justice they say that all they ever wanted was to seekjustice for their son. The determination of this family from northamptonshire has been remarkable. Amid their grief, they have crossed the atlantic, madame president and maintained their dignity met a president. An incredible story to be waking up to this morning. In just a few minutes, well speak to radd seiger, the spokeman for harrys mum and dad, who joined them on their meeting with the president. They met President Trump and then we understand Anne Sacoolas was there but hopefully he can explain to us what happened and also that decision they made not to meet her as well. When they are told she is in the next room, being put under that pressure when they are in an already stressful situation is a fascinating story. We will speak to the lawyer very shortly about that. Eu and uk negotiators worked late into the night last night, to try to thrash out a brexit deal ahead of tomorrows crucial summit. There have been numerous reports that both sides are close to reaching an agreement, but there has been no official confirmation. Our Political Correspondent helen catt is in westminster for us. Helen, how imminent is a deal . Promises is was going to end at midnightand promises is was going to end at midnight and then it didnt. The details of the talks are being kept pretty under wraps by both sides but downing street has described the talks which finished after midnight last night as construct, that progress was being made, that they will continue this morning. The message from both sides over the last few days have been pretty consistent that a deal is possible. They can see a pathway to it more work needs to be done. The crucial issue now, though, is the timing was up issue now, though, is the timing was up as you mentioned, tomorrow is the big eu summit which downing street has consistently pointed to as being where a deal may be done. There is also the big parliamentary deadline looming as well. Saturday the 19th of october. That is the date in a law that was passed by mps last month that says if borisjohnson hasnt got a deal by that point then he has to ask the eu to delay brexit and delay the process untiljanuary next year. The deal is coming up as well so the pressure is really on to get something through. Helen, good to talk to you. We will talk about it later with Iain Duncan Smith in the conservatives and also leader of the conservatives and also leader of the liberal democrat jo the conservatives and also leader of the liberal democratjo swinson. Last year when my wife and i attended, we knew we were expecting oui attended, we knew we were expecting our first attended, we knew we were expecting ourfirst child. No one attended, we knew we were expecting our first child. No one else did at the time but we did and i remember. Tim applause. Sorry. Sometimes a motionjust remember. Tim applause. Sorry. Sometimes a motion just gets you. Emotion. A cuddle goes a long way at times like that. Good morning, sally. Were still talking about that game, arent we . Yes, the fallout continues after that infamous night over there. John henderson said he wanted to make the home fans suffer. There were also reports today that some of the gangs we re reports today that some of the gangs were co ordinated and they were dressed as stewards in sofia. The republic of ireland missed the chance to qualify for the european championships next year. They lsot 2 0 at switzerland, leaving their qualification hopes hanging in the balance. Take your phone or whatever it is with you. That is on at 8 10. The pa rents of with you. That is on at 8 10. The parents of harry dunn have refused to meet the woman involved in the crash which killed their son during a visit to the white house. President trump offered charlotte and tim done the chance to meet Anne Sacoolas. Tim dunn. They didnt know she was waiting in the next room. We will talk to radd seiger, the spokesman for the family. We know there is quite a story. You got a call from the white house inviting them there . Good Morning Britain yes, we them there . Good Morning Britain yes , we we re them there . Good Morning Britain yes, we were in new york city attending various tv studios and mid morning out of the blue we got a message that the white house wanted to speak to me so i took that call and they invited us down to the white house. It is about three hours from new york to washington and we hopped on a train in good faith, got there and it was quite an extraordinary, extraordinary meeting. After the pleasa ntries extraordinary, extraordinary meeting. After the pleasantries and greetings and of course, quite sincere and warm condolences, they got down to business and said they had mrs sacoolas in the next room. Did they know they were going to meet the president . Well, no, we didnt know that. We were told it was the most senior official in the government so we didnt read between the lines. They are not allowed to tell you who you are meeting that we knew when they said the most senior official in the government it was going to be president mack truck. Official in the government it was going to be president mack truckm then he says what . I have got Anne Sacoolas next door . Rush President Trump. President trump. President trump. These people are in emotional shutdown following the loss of their son and to just have that sprung on them, it wasnt mentioned when they spoke to me and i thought we were going to have a talk on the diplomatic diplomatic immunity law. And then we found out that the reason was to try and get charlotte and mrs sacoolas in the room together and i look to my side andi room together and i look to my side and i saw at least three photographers ready to almost do a press call. That is when i intervened and said look, mr president , i appreciate your effort. This is a meeting that should take place that it is a few months down the line, perhaps after some therapy and we will do it in the uk when mrs sacoolas comes back and that is when it pretty much became clear, robert obrien, the National Security adviser was in the room and he said quite emphatically, she is not coming back and that made it clear to both parties that there wasnt really a lot of point carrying on the discussion. I think the family feel a little outraged, to say the least, and disappointed to make the effort they went all the way down there with really no further progress towards achieving the closure they were so deaf as desperately seeking. Presumably this happens and it is quite a thing to go through. How are they . Again, it is not everyday that you get a call from the white house to pop down and see the president of the united states. They were visibly trembling as they were walking into the oval office. I think they are exhausted. We are all exhausted. To their credit, they are still courageous and still keep going but i think they were excited to see the president today. They were hopeful that there was going to be some progress made towards achieving a resolution and then the inevitable deflation when they walked out and realised that actually, they had just been brought there to perhaps have a press call and see what could be made by bringing the two people together. We have always said we wa nt to together. We have always said we want to meet her but certainly not now and certainly not in the white housein now and certainly not in the white house in front of a bank of photographers. And that is what you thought was going to happen . They we re thought was going to happen . They were going to be introduced in front ofa were going to be introduced in front of a sort of photocall . When they announced she was in the next room, i nearly had a heart attack because i thought he was just going to bring her in that is when ive quite forcefully said no, that is not happening, mr president. These people are not ready. At some point down the line they are they might be but not now in front of all this. I dare say, i dont know what would have happened if i hadnt been in the room and the fact that they tried to stop me from going into the room, i think theyjust wanted to just have the family so i think if they were here, the family would, they were here, the family would, they were here, the family would, they were quite glad that i made that intervention because i would have flung open the door and im sure she would have walked into full. Can you imagine . Charlotte is just in no shape to have that meeting in this stage. It is just a misunderstanding. I dont think the president really understood where this family are in their emotional journey and quite inappropriate but given that giving the benefit of the doubt, maybe just a misunderstanding. Take me through, if you could, where we are now. They said quite clearly that she was there but she is not going to come back to the uk. That is what they said . Robert obrien looked me straight in the eye when i said this meeting should take place in the uk and he said she is never coming back. He said never quite emphatically. 0k, back. He said never quite emphatically. Ok, so the parents, we know that they want to meet her but you say it needs to be in a particular environment where everybody is what, supported . Particular environment where everybody is what, supported . |j particular environment where everybody is what, supported . I have organised many such meetings after disasters and catastrophes and they area disasters and catastrophes and they are a wonderful thing to do if they can be organised but you have it in a neutral environment and you have mediators and therapists in the room supporting the parties as you go through the process. It often can ta ke through the process. It often can take 2 three hours before you can actually bring the parties together safely. You dont just actually bring the parties together safely. You dontjust throw open the circus doors with the cameras there. Again, i, i. Let us give them the benefit of the doubt but it was extraordinary and in my view an unprecedented situation. Briefly, how are they now, the family . They fell asleep as soon as we got on the plane, they slept all the way back. It is in the early hours of the morning. We are about to said set off on another round of tv appearances later. They are ok but they need that closure very quickly, louise, before some sort of serious damage sets in. We have docked is. That is why we are putting his energy and effort into helping. We have doctors. It has to happen very quickly pulled up radd seiger. Thank you for talking to us and explaining a very interesting sequence of events. I cant believe that. I cannot believe that. Can you imagine being introduced so quickly . It was quick thinking from those in the room to say no. With the press they are ready to is take pictures. And we will obviously continue talking to the family and following that story here on bbc breakfast. Lets go see what is up with the weather. Carol, what is happening . There is a great start the day for some of us because there a weather front moving east to west overnight. Heavy pulses of rain along it that will clear for most of us through the morning and behind it, a return to sunshine. You can see nicely in the satellite picture this area of cloud. This is what has been bringing rain and it has been moving west to east clearly Northern Ireland initially. And as it continues to do so, what you will notice behind it is a transient ridge of High Pressure and then the next area of low pressure coming our way tomorrow bringing more unsettled conditions. Misty and murky conditions. Misty and murky conditions across the south west. Same across parts of yorkshire. Rain continuing to edge into the north sea, lingering across orkney and shetland where it will be for much of the day. Behind the rain, the sun will come out and we will see lengthy sunny spells and a few showers possible. Our temperature range 11 16 degrees. Down one also degrees for some of us in the south east compared to yesterday. As we head through the evening and overnight you can see the rain pushing away from the Northern Isles that make isles. Under that ridge of High Pressure it will be a clear night for a lot of us. Showers in the western temperatures dipping across scotland. North east england as well for a touch of frost first thing in the morning. Temperatures holding up as we come further south between nine and 11. That leaves us into thursday and that low pressure edges ever closer to us. You can see the weather front is wrapped around it so showers be wrapped around as well. Isobars also telling you it will be quite a blustery day. Quite windy with exposure. We begin with sunshine because the low pressure assented out towards the west, most of the showers will be in the west however on a brisk breeze we can see some of them reaching the east and some of them reaching the east and some showers will merge, some will be heavy with hail and also thunder mixed in. But they are showers so we will not one. Temperature is 11 14. And then by the time we reach friday the low pressure has aged a little closer to us again. Still the weather fronts are wrapped around it and still the showers rotate around the area of low pressure. Through the area of low pressure. Through the course of friday there will be dry rot weather around and sunshine. Still blustery wind, a packet of showers and still the risk of some merging. Heavy downpours as well. Temperatures 10 15 degrees. As we head into the spot spot the difference. We hang onto the u nsettled difference. We hang onto the unsettled theme with low pressure nearby and you can see temperatures 1115, nearby and you can see temperatures 11 15, variable cloud with sunny spells and some showers. Anybody would think it was autumn. As i am beginning to notice, carol. Thank you. To just have that sprung on them, it wasnt mentioned when they called me full. I thought we we re when they called me full. I thought we were coming down to have a debate on the diplomatic immunity laws. Bulgaria are not going to be qualified anyway. For me, it needs to be expulsions with warnings about future competitions. The republic of ireland missed a chance to qualify for next summers european championships after losing 2 0 to switzerland. A shot from haris seferovic, which went through shane duffys legs, got ireland off to a disappointing start. Edimilson fernandes got the second in extra time. Irelands hopes of a spot now rest on next months group game against denmark. There is a worry for manchester united. David tejeda limped off during the match. Scrum half Gareth Davies admits he might have to think his dad. He sent him words of wisdom before every single name. I try and tell him sometimes it is not quite as easy as he tells me. He tells me some simple things and i tried to tell him it is not that easyin tried to tell him it is not that easy in international rugby. It is a lwa ys easy in international rugby. It is always nice to get a message from him before every single game. Could there be more success on the way for Katarina Johnson thompson . The british heptathlete is one of 11 athletes to have been nominated for the iaaf world athlete of the year award. As well as the winning her first global outdoor title in doha, Johnson Thompson also won the european indoor pentathlon title in march. She is with us here on the sofa just after eight oclock this morning. It is all looking nicely lined up for the olympics. A miraculous escape. And finally nascar driver Brendan Gaughan walked away unscathed from an incredible crash in a race at talla dega speedway. Gaughan was briefly leading the race with seven laps left when this happened his car was squeezed between two others and performed a somersault before landing back on its wheels. He later told his mum on tv, it didnt hurt, i promise. can we see that one more time . M can we see that one more time . It is amassing amazing that he lands back on his tyres. Isnt that the racetrack that is in cars, the movie . That is not will ferrell. That is definitely not well farrell. Lets return to one of our main stories now. As brexit negotiations continue in brussels, here, mps are debating the proposals set out in mondays queens speech. The liberal democrats have tabled an amendment for a fresh vote on a second referendum. Were joined now by the partys leader, jo swinson. From your perspective, we talking a lot about where we are with these discussions and where we are with these talks. What have you been told and what do you know about where these talks are at the moment . There isa these talks are at the moment . There is a visually still a lot of uncertainty about whether are at. But it does look like borisjohnson is trying to get a deal that is probably quite similar to theresa mays deal, just worse for the economy. From a liberal democrat perspective, we are very clear that it doesnt actually matter if it is theresa mays deal or Boris Johnsons deal, it is a bad deal. It isa johnsons deal, it is a bad deal. It is a bad dealfor our economy, a bad dealfor is a bad dealfor our economy, a bad deal for our is a bad dealfor our economy, a bad dealfor our public is a bad dealfor our economy, a bad deal for our public services. That is why we want to have a people s vote so the public and have the final say and have the chance to stop exit. Clarity, even if, over the next few days a deal comes back to parliament, bear in mind there has been three days of here, there and everywhere, you will not support that deal under any circumstances . Well, if you look at the analysis of what seems to be coming out, the suggestion is that the hit that the economy will take from this kind of brexit deal will be worse than the financial crash. It is astonishing that any government is voluntarily trying to inflict on the country a piece of economic vandalism that is worse than that financial crash, because we know what that did to jobs and what that did to wages and what that will do to our public services, not to mention, our security. And indeed, keeping our family of nations together in the United Kingdom with the potential impacts on Northern Ireland. There are so many reasons why this is a bad deal. And that is why it shouldnt just be up bad deal. And that is why it shouldntjust be up to parliament, it should be up to the public to have their say on this because, you know, three years ago, they didnt put on the side of the bus that prices would go up and that wages would go down and that we would crash the economy of that we would starve our nhs of Vital Healthcare workers, that wasnt on the side of the bus, so people should have the final say on that deal. You keep coming back to this, and i have asked you before but i will ask you again. It seems to be a fundamental pa rt again. It seems to be a fundamental part of yours that people dont know what they were voting for. People watching the television now, they will be people that will say we didnt know what we voted for. Will be people that will say we didnt know what we voted for. The details are emerging of what this current deal is that as of today, we are still not entirely exactly sure, were trying to piece together. The idea it was clear what this deal would look like three years ago, it obviously doesnt stack up. Would look like three years ago, it obviously doesnt stack up. They we re obviously doesnt stack up. They were voting for a deal. And i can see the smile on your face. Were voting for a deal. And i can see the smile on your face. That is why we think people should have that choice. That they voted for the principal. You say this will be terrible economically but one of the other options is a no deal which i would imagine you would say would be worse. The other option is no brexit and we have poll after poll suggesting that people want to remain in the European Union now and when you are looking at the government putting forward a deal which is even worse than the one that has been rejected three times in parliament, and i think it is only right that the public can have that final say and decide and that is why liberal democrat, we lead the argument for a people s vote for more than three years and that is why we have put down this amendment to the queens speech to say that there should be a people s vote. There are a lot of reasons to recognise that there are millions and millions of people who want to have that chance to have a say. Were going to have a huge march on saturday with many people coming to have a say. The previous one that we had in march of this year, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets. We had 6 Million People signed a position petition to revoke article 50. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that the public mood has changed and it is only right with the decision of this huge momentous nature, notjust for the next five years, but for generations to come, that we should be really certain that that is what people wa nt certain that that is what people want and they should have the choice to stop it and remain in the European Union. Can you at least can see that there is an element of hypocrisy when you propose this people s vote, you made the case clearly on bbc breakfast this morning. We need the people s vote to decide, when you have already ignored a vote for three years ago and saying that actually, we dont wa nt and saying that actually, we dont want that and we need to put that question again. How can anybody trust you that you will go on the whatever happens in that vote, if there was to be one. You are already saying that you dont think the one from three years ago actually stands at all . We are being absolutely consistent to our principles. I believe we are better off in the European Union because we are better when we Work Together with fellow countries who share our values, where we can jointly solve the International Problems that we face, whether it is the Climate Emergency or international terrorism. That is a consistent position that we have a lwa ys a consistent position that we have always argued for as the liberal democrats, as the most pro european party, and we are sticking to that position. And what i would say about people s vote is that i genuinely, sitting here today, do not have any confidence that there is a majority in the country out there, for any specific form of brexit when even the brexiteers have been squabbling amongst themselves, unable to agree what brexit means. Surely it is therefore right that we should have that confidence that whatever path we ta ke that confidence that whatever path we take you know that there is definitely a daugherty support for that in the country. At the moment, i dont think there is evidence that thatis i dont think there is evidence that that is the case and that is why we need to put this back to the people. Jo swinson, good to talk to you. We will be speaking to Iain Duncan Smith at ten past seven. Fwido fw i do know that it is autumn and it feels like it. Carol. You are right. Good morning everybody. This morning many of us will not wake up toa morning many of us will not wake up to a scene like this although in Northern Ireland you may as the rain is clearing. Rain, east to west will continue all but the Northern Isles through the day and then quite smartly behind it we will see a return to sunshine. We have seen a lot of rain coming our way through the latter part of yesterday, streaming and across the west and steadily pushing eastwards heavy bursts as well and i am showing you the radar just bursts as well and i am showing you the radarjust to show bursts as well and i am showing you the radar just to show you bursts as well and i am showing you the radarjust to show you the trend and track that the rain is taking. This is due to the weather front that will continue to move away but you can see it still lingers across the northern aisles. A transient ridge of High Pressure comes our way and then this area of High Pressure will be with us tomorrow into the weekend. First thing this morning we start dry and bright in the far north east before the rain pushes through. Through the afternoon across orkney we will hang onto the rain and get into shetland in the evening. Behind it for the rest of scotla nd evening. Behind it for the rest of scotland will be sunshine and a few showers. Northern ireland has sunshine with the odd isolated shower and as we head south we look atafair shower and as we head south we look at a fair bit of sunshine with your shower across north west england and also south west wales. This morning, South West England and wales and across the pennines, watch out for fault that will lift foremost as we go through the morning. Through the evening and overnight there was the rain making it into shetland under the transient ridge of High Pressure. Clear skies and the temperature will plummet quite quickly. For some across sheltered areas of scotland, possibly parts of the north east of england, we could see some rain. Cloud coming in ahead of the low pressure and showers as well. For tomorrow morning, a chilly start but try especially the further east you go. Better sunshine and with the low pressure coming in, a weather front rotating around it we will start to see showers become a little more widespread. Some of them could be heavy and thundery with hailand could be heavy and thundery with hail and mystery wind, some of them will be driven over towards the east but the bulk of them tomorrow will be on the west. The temperature tomorrow 11 1a degrees. As we head on into friday we still have low pressure scented to the west of ireland and again weather front rotating around did ringing in further showers. Some of them could form some lines so youll could be stuck for a while. And sunshine and another batch of them coming away. But as is the way we showers, some will mist altogether. Temperatures on friday 10 15 degrees. So it is still unsettled. It was the first, big online clothes retailer but all is not well at asos. Bens here with more on this. The figures came out at seven oclock and we will get an update on the turnaround plan because there is a lot for them to sort out. It is easy to forget how revolutionaries they were because they really were one of the first big retailers who changed the way we shop, particularly online. The idea of cheaper prices and accessibility, looking at what you want while you we re looking at what you want while you were at home and free returns which really did change the market. Tell you what we know is so far. The retail giant group grew from Humble Beginnings and was founded nearly 20 yea rs beginnings and was founded nearly 20 years ago. An online pioneerfor retail. Today the site sells 800 different brands through its website, its app and through 9 million instagram followers. And that social media following is important because thats 70 of its customers buying through their mobile phone. But it is a difficult market to be in. There are newer and quicker competitors stealing market share. Its biggest rival over talk asos this year and even traditional high street retailers are doing well with their online sales as well. So as well as the extra competition, asos also suffered supply issues. It has been expanding overseas and some say it is now grown too quickly and is not looking after its existing customers. It has been forced to issue not one but two profit warnings this year and its share price has slumped by half. What i wa nt to price has slumped by half. What i want to know, our online sales still supporting high street . H m and other retailers are doing well but because of their online offering driving people to their stores. In the case of next they use click and collected. So you go in and collect something and then you collect something and then you collect Something Else . Yes. And to get footfall. Because in the next figures we have, they said the coast of the stores on so many high streets is paper heavy to but it means people go there. And they say they need to get people away from just using click and collect because they could do that with a tiny kiosk. They dont need the stores on high street. Online does better than high street. Online does better than high street. Online does better than high street as always butjust18 of all retail sales are done online. You may think it is much more and you may think we do so much more of our shopping on the internet but just 18 . So the high street still plays an Important Role and for many retailers it is about trying to find the mix. And in the case of asos it is about the idea that some of the ways facing high street now translate to online so the internet is not immune. Very interesting. The results will be out at seven. I love the drama. The drama of me delivering these numbers . Its believed to be one of the most expensive dramas to ever be shown on the bbc the tv adaptation of Philip Pullmans best selling trilogy his dark materials. The series, which premiered in london last night, is set in wales. Our reporter sian lloyd has been to take a sneak peek behind the scenes. She is the antagonist. And she does ghastly things, yes. And she does ghastly things, yes. And ifind it hard justifying and she does ghastly things, yes. And i find it hard justifying why she does those things but i have tried to find the humid part of her. She is an amazing character and forever mysterious and forever fascinating and we keep getting deeper and deeper and trying to work out and everyone has different a nswe rs. Out and everyone has different answers. She must make ajourney. Lyra embarks on a dangerous adventure. It is a huge part for the 1a year old in a story that appeals to all ages. The most amazing thing about the show is that a seven year old can watch it and see the adventure but a a0 year old can watch it and see the darkness and the messages inside it and all the layers and stuff. I am right here. Filming on the second series is already well under way. An unusual move before the first has said it but the bbc says it demonstrates its commitment to an iconic work. In this world, every character has a demon, an animal that represents their inner self. To help the actors rehearse with a Computer Generated creation, 3d puppets were made for them to rehearse with onset. Instead of just them to rehearse with onset. Instead ofjust being a simple visual effects reference, it is actually something that people can relate to and look in the eye and see the character that there. It is a big budget series that has taken years in production to get to the first screening last night. This premier sees the stars grace a black, not red, carpet. Aint nod to the magisterium, a dark controlling power in his dark materials. There isa war power in his dark materials. There is a war raging right now. Lyra s best friend roger finds is a war raging right now. Lyra s best friend rogerfinds himself is a war raging right now. Lyra s best friend roger finds himself the centre of a mystery. Played by a 12 year old back to. Centre of a mystery. Played by a 12yearold back to. It is fun and it is drama. It is quite tense. It has dark moments. It has, like, a bit of everything. And the whole universe, because it is set in a different universe, and it has demons, like souls in the form of an animal, it is so much exciting stuff. Philip pullman s books have fa ns stuff. Philip pullman s books have fans all over the world and for some, meeting the heroes was overwhelming. There will be High Expectations but they will not have long to wait. The First Episode will be shown on bbc one on november three. Iam very i am very much looking forward to it. Our headlines today the parents of harry dunn meet President Trump at the white house, but refuse to meet the woman involved in the fatal crash as she waits in the room next door. There wasnt really a lot of points going on with the discussion. I think the family feel a little ambushed, to say the least. Eu and uk negotiators work late into the night to try to thrash out a last minute brexit deal ahead of tomorrows crucial summit. Good morning. Falling out of fashion. After a dry start in the east, rain that has progressively been moving in from the west will cross us all and right behind it, we will see some sunshine and the odd shower. I will have more details in 15 minutes. It is wednesday the 16th of october. Let us start with the parents of harry dunn who said they were ambushed during a visit to ambushed during a visit harry dunn who said they were ambushed during a visit to the white house last night when they were offered to meet the woman involved in the crash which killed their son. Arriving at the white house, harrys parents, charlotte and tim, had no idea they were about to meet president of the united states. They spend 15 minutes with donald trump. Afterwards, charlotte said at one point, the president held her hand, but she says they still dont know if the woman who knocked down harry would return to the uk. I asked him again. I said if it was your 19 year old son or your son, no matter what age, you would be doing the same as me. And he was holding my hand at the time and said yes, i would. And he said maybe well try and push this from a different angle. Harry dunn died six weeks ago after his motorbike collided with a car in northamptonshire. The car was being driven on the wrong side of the road by Anne Sacoolas who later left the uk, despite being the main suspect. In a stunning surprise, President Trump told harrys parents that mrs sacoolas was waiting in the room next door and wanted to meet the couple there and then. But they refused, saying talking about harrys death with Anne Sacoolas must be done in a proper controlled setting. He seemed to understand that our grief has been going on for seven weeks now, in a case that should have been very clear cut. He understands, or he seemed to understand, that that Meeting Needs to be with therapists and mediators in the room and notjust her and asked. It is, you know, iwouldnt imagine that is even advisable for her, let alone asked. Let alone us. The fact that this case has even made it to the white house has stunned charlotte and tim. Just six weeks ago, they were grieving for harry after that car accident in the northamptonshire countryside. Now, after all theyve been through, they say that all they ever wanted was to seekjustice for their son. The determination of this family from northamptonshire has been remarkable. Amid their grief, they have crossed the atlantic, met a president and maintained their dignity to serve their son. Duncan kennedy, bbc news, at the white house. Earlier we spoke with their spokesperson radd seiger. Robert obrien said that she wasnt coming back to the uk. It wasnt it was clear then to both parties that there wasnt much point carrying on with the discussion. Families feel a little ambushed, to stay the least. Disappointed they made the effort to go all the way down there and then all the way back up with really no further progress towards achieving the closure that they so desperately seeking. In other news, eu and uk negotiators worked late into the night last night, to try and thrash out a brexit deal ahead of tomorrows crucial summit. There have been numerous reports that both sides are close to reaching an agreement, but there has been no official confirmation. Well get the latest from brussels in a moment, but firsy our Political Correspondent helen catt is in westminsterfor us. Helen, how imminent is a deal . Take the temperature for us, if you can. Details are being kept so tightly under wraps that it is difficult to know how close or how far the two sides are from agreement. Downing street are saying that the talks have been construct of and they continue to make progress. The Biggest Issue is timing. Tomorrow is the start of the crucial eu summit that everybody has been pointing towards four weeks as to where a deal should be done for them than two days later, the 19th of october, there is a big parliamentary deadline. Maybe a special sitting of parliament on saturday. That is also the date in law when the mps passed a law last month that said if borisjohnson hadnt got a deal by that point than he must ask the eu to extend the Brexit Process which then of course could have a knock on on the brexit date, currently set is the 31st of october, borisjohnson date, currently set is the 31st of october, Boris Johnson has date, currently set is the 31st of october, borisjohnson has been adamant that we will be leaving the eu on that date on a deal or no deal, but there is still no clarity on how he plans to do that. In the face of that law that was passed by Parliament Last month. So it is still at the moment case of we know what is happening in the last couple of days and we know what the key dates are but anything could happen in between. Lets get the view from europe with our brussels reporter, adam fleming. Adam, how eager will the eu be to agree a deal before tomorrows summit . They wrapped up about 130 in the morning, brussels time, which is half past midnight in the uk. Very well connected brussels journalist we re well connected brussels journalist were reduced to standing on the pavement counting how many lights we re pavement counting how many lights were on in how many rooms trying to work out what was happening. That is how shrouded in mystery the whole thing is. We think the two teams will resume talking in the next hour or so which must mean they think it is worth carrying on talking is not pulling the plug on this process yet. Yesterday michel barnier, the eus yet. Yesterday michel barnier, the eus chief negotiator was breathing members from the member state and said there was a very narrow pathway to get a deal at balancing the interests of the eu which was protecting the single market, and the uks interests, which is keeping Northern Ireland in the uks customs territory. Michel barnier said they we re territory. Michel barnier said they were really only three possible outcomes. Deadlock, you need more time for more talks, or a last minute deal for time for more talks, or a last minute dealfor top time for more talks, or a last minute deal for top it is looking like hippies a deal, it will be very, very last minute and those other three options are Still Available to us this morning. Nhs screening programmes in england should be made available on evenings and weekends and more convenient locations, according to a government the study carried out they are former chief instructor of hospitals to mike richard said changes would increase uptake. He also wants the it systems used to be updated wanting at present they can lead to errors. President erdogan of turkey has insisted he will never declare a ceasefire to enter the military offensive against Kurdish Forces in northern syria. He also dismissed the likely impact of us sanctions on the likely impact of us sanctions on the us economy that he saying he wasnt worried about them. The duke and duchess of cambridge continue their tour of pakistan this morning with a visit to a disappearing the duke of sussex became emotional as he paid tribute to inspirational children at an awards ceremony last night. Harry and meghan attended the wellchild awards in london, meeting with winners and their families. The duke was overcome with emotion as he praised them, saying his own journey into fatherhood meant learning about those with serious illnesses pulls at his heartstrings. Last year when my wife and i attended, we knew we were expecting ourfirst child. No one else did at the time but we did, and i remember. He breaks down. Applause. Sorry. As we have been hearing, it seems as if the eu and the uk are edging closer to the potential of a brexit deal. At the heart of negotiations and proposals over customs and the irish border, the Prime Minister has spent the last few days trying to win over the dup and prominent brexiteers. Iain duncan smith, one of those who met with Boris Johnson, joins us. We know that negotiations went on way into the night last night. We know also that you have been talking to the Prime Minister. Has he persuaded you that there is a deal to be done . Has he persuaded you that there is a dealto be done . Can i make one correction . We didnt meet with the premise yesterday. Prime minister. We were talking about the negotiations and we were talking to some of the key people involved in it. The truth is, nobody quite knows where they are. I got the sense from them that they thought that they we re them that they thought that they were reasonably close to a deal and the deal that they thought probably fulfilled the governments mandate which was that the backstop was gone, essentially therefore, but there are other issues surrounding it. I think those are the key. During implementation period, what degree is the uks sovereign status at risk was to mark remember, no longer we will be in the council, no longer we will be in the council, no longer will we have vetoes of votes and the deal itself makes it clear that we have to accept the various things that come down from brussels without a say. So that has to be also part of it and that wasnt in the discussion. Let usjust go back for of as far as you understand, you think there is a deal going to be done . What timescale do you think . What do you think is going to happen . I know that the government anticipate and wants, obviously, too, if there is a deal available, too, if there is a deal available, to get the deal done before the Council Begins so they can essentially get it all agreed so they will get whatever Domestic Legislation under way in time to get it all cleared. The Prime Minister, asi it all cleared. The Prime Minister, as i understand it, is still absolutely determined to break the deadline of the 31st and he hasnt changed his rhetoric and i have heard nothing behind the scenes, as it were, that the Prime Minister will, in anyway, his position which means he will be in no position of extending beyond the 31st. If you wa nt to extending beyond the 31st. If you want to know, as some people said, they will be an extension. If they did geta they will be an extension. If they did get a deal, i dont believe they would get an extension. There is plenty of time because of parliament considered round the clock, they considered round the clock, they considered weekends, they can get all this stuff done. All, those who put, randy threw in 2a hours so there is plenty of time to get this through but he needs to get it done in time for the council. You said to me you have been in number ten and having discussions so i suppose we dont know the details yet but will it be good enough for you, for example, to support it . You answered my question and asked it which is we dont know the details yet. Like any reasonable individual, i am simply said to them well, we have to see what you come back with. It is clearly im porta nt what you come back with. It is clearly important that the sovereign status of the United Kingdom remains exactly that. Sovereign. It is not for other countries to dictate where our borders lie and how they work there is a busily some accommodation, as we all speculated afterwards which is there may be an attempt to have two systems on the island of ireland but notwithstanding, the dup are very important in all of these because they want consent and that is important as part of the deal with the Prime Minister has already offered. All of these things are in play. It is very difficult to make any snap decisions. People will make their own minds any snap decisions. People will make theirown minds up any snap decisions. People will make their own minds up and as individuals. People talk about the eag as some sort of, it is not. People will make their own minds up. They would discuss that in the next few days with top it is up to what comes back. You say it is all in play. Can borisjohnson and again, you may not be able to answer this, bring together, for starters, your party . Even those who rebelled the other day and sadly devote to the bill that was more difficult to negotiate, most of them do aptly wa nt to negotiate, most of them do aptly want to get a deal and therefore i suspect they will want to back it, providing obviously that it works. There is a difference. Everybody now wa nts, there is a difference. Everybody now wants, is almost willing him, to get a deal that works for the uk over the line so that we can actually get out on the 31st, because we are all when we go back to our constituency, being constantly told whether they voted leave or remain, for gods sake, just get the thing done. We are sick and tired of this mess that is going on and our inability, that is, iam is going on and our inability, that is, i am saying it to us, to actually get on with our lives because parliament is unable to make a decision. So there is goodwill for the Prime Minister there and i think that the Opposition Party would have to face a real challenge which is if the Prime Minister does come back with a deal which is workable, obviously there are things that have to be included in that, but if he does, then they have to ask the question why do they want to stop what the british people voted for . There is i wrote rushed out of downing street because i had to get to my constituency. That seems to have been assumed that i was angry. That ijust did not want been assumed that i was angry. That i just did not want to been assumed that i was angry. That ijust did not want to get been assumed that i was angry. That i just did not want to get trapped on the central line. I was exploding anyway. I am always clear. I went in with ideas, and that is what i was asked for, ideas on protecting British Sovereignty. This is the discussion really. I didnt find out what the government is planning to do so what the government is planning to dosoi what the government is planning to do soiam what the government is planning to do so i am not in what the government is planning to do soiam notina what the government is planning to do so i am not in a position to be happy, angry or sad. Do so i am not in a position to be happy, angry orsad. I do so i am not in a position to be happy, angry or sad. I simply went in to try and help the government figure out how to protect the British Sovereign right to make a decision without being imposed upon by the eu during the period before we co m plete by the eu during the period before we complete the trade deal. Thank you very much for your time this morning. This is breakfast from the bbc. High time now to find out what happened with the weather. M bbc. Not clearing orkney nor shetland until this evening and then behind it we see a return to sunny skies with the odd shower in the west. In Northern Ireland the rain has cleared and behind it you see bright sky and sunshine with the odd shower. It will hang back in the east but be bright for many eastern areas with sunshine further west. Chance of a shower in South West England and wales through the afternoon. Temperatures 11 16 degrees. Then as we head on into the evening and overnight there goes the rain heading up into shetland before clearing under a transient ridge of High Pressure with temperatures dropping away quickly under clear skies. Lower cross low enough across sheltered parts for a touch of frost. As we go through tomorrow with low pressure ever closer we will have fronts chasing around it which means we will see a plethora of showers, particularly in the west. We will also have gusty winds, especially with exposure. And those winds will blow showers towards the east at times. They are showers and us east at times. They are showers and us is the way, not all of us will catch one. On friday, the low pressure m oves catch one. On friday, the low pressure moves closer to us. Still a lot of showers wrapped around it, still some of the merging to provide longer spells of rain. Some will have rain and thunder embedded and some parts for example in parts of essex towards sussex we will have lines of showers so a lot of rain and then we would have a temporary break and then another batch of showers. Some of us will mist them all together with ties between ten and 15 degrees. A little bit of blue there. Hero brea kfast we a little bit of blue there. It has an auspicious history. A0 years ago, staff carried out the First Successful heart transplant in the uk. Advances in medicine and treatment have enabled them to take on some very difficult cases, such as rajus. Transplant operations are emergencies are often happening at night and having done a lot of transplants, it is never routine. This operation was technically difficult because he had very small lung volume and we were putting a big lung into the left side for him. So tis was harder than average. The hospital today receives an unprecedented outstanding in every category from the independent hills regulator, the Care Quality Commission. Sadie vonjoel co ordinated the transplant and said so many people are involved. The donor Co Ordinators who first approached the families regarding donation and without their generosity and bravery we would not even be in this position. The team in bristol who offer the organs out and then the Surgical Team to have to go down and do the retrieval. A massive team effort. And this is just one of the success stories. I have a 1. 5 year old dog, may be able to take him a walk. Taking his dog for a walk. That is amazing and something he could not or the procedure. 1700 staff were ciaran josey, you or the procedure. 1700 staff were ciaranjosey, you are the chief nurse. To get a clean sweep across the board is incredible and has not been done before. What is the secret of your success . Absolutely down to Staff Engagement and the staff being open and transparent about what is happening in their environment. They strive to do the best for their patience and care for them and working in a transparent way they can make sure they improve and get better and better and provide the best possible care for patients. It is about the stuff commitment. They really wa nt is about the stuff commitment. They really want the best for the patients. And you are an inspector who goes to other hospitals so you know exactly what the team are looking for. It is a big team. 13 sis inspectors 30 inspectors looking at all aspects. The inspectors arrive and they can actually go absolutely anywhere and they did, and that is fantastic. They spoke to staff, they looked at records, they spoke to patients. It isa records, they spoke to patients. It is a thorough process and nothing is left unlocked at. And they co nsta ntly left unlocked at. And they constantly ask questions and for evidence. It is important that staff feel comfortable and during the inspection there was excitement because the staff really wanted to show the inspectors what they could do and it was absolutely fantastic because the patients also were very out of the hospital that they were interdict thank you so much. A grey, damp and cloudy start out there this morning with outbreaks of rain. Gradually clearing to a dry and bright afternoon. Heavy bursts of rain first thing but like i say, they will be pushed away. A gusty wind associated with the front in the cloud breaking up as it clears through the afternoon. Some sunny spells a little later. The temperature today heading to around 16 celsius. After a dry end to the day it looks dry overnight as well. Again, clear spells and the wind a little lighter. Plenty more on our website at the usual address. Now though its back to louise and dan. Bye for now. Hello this is breakfast with dan walker and louise minchin. Its 7 30. The parents of harry dunn say they we re the parents of harry dunn say they were ambushed during a white house visit last night when they were offered a chance to meet the woman involved in the crash which killed their son. President trump gave charlotte, charles and tim dunn a chance to speak to Anne Sacoolas and they didnt even know she was waiting in the next room. Mrs sacoolas who is married to a us diplomat returned to america days after the crash that killed the 19 year old claiming diplomatic immunity. The Us Government official said she wont be coming back to the uk. Yes, almost like, hey, ive got somebody who wants to see you. And dont forget, these people are still in emotional shutdown following the loss of their son. To just have that sprung on them, it wasnt mentioned when they called me full. And i thought we were coming down to have a debate on the diplomatic immunity laws. It soon became clear to us that the real reason for inviting us down was to try and get charlotte and mrs sacoolas in a room together and then i looked to my side and i saw at least three photographers ready to almost do a press call and i, you know, thats when i then intervened and said look, mr president , i appreciate your effort, this is a meeting that should take place but it is a few months down the line, perhaps after some therapy, and we will do it in the uk when mrs sacoolas comes back. Thats when it pretty much became clear. Robert obrien, the National Security adviser, was in the room and he said quite emphatically, shes not coming back. And that made it clear to both parties that there wasnt really a lot of point carrying on the discussion. I think the family feel a little ambushed, to say the least. And disappointed that they made the effort to go all the way down there and then all the way back up with really no further progress towards achieving the closure that they so desperately are seeking. Eu and uk negotiators worked late into the night last night, to try and thrash out a brexit deal ahead of tomorrows crucial summit. Im staying off, im staying off, im coming on you dont quite get the full schadler face, do you . Chandler. The fall out from englands night in bulgaria continues this morning, as we continue to learn more about what happened. Jordan henderson says the england players wanted to make the home fans suffer for the racist abuse by beating them on the pitch. There are also reports that the bulgarian players told england that the racism was pre planned and co ordinated. So co ordinated in fact that its claimed that some of the abusers were disguised as stewards in sofia. So to the consequences. The president of the bulgarian fa Borislav Mihaylov has resigned. Uefa say the football family and governments need to wage war on the racists, while fifa president Gianni Infantino says the sport needs to think more broadly about fixing the problem. Troy townsends from the Anti Racism Group kick it out, he says an example needs to be made of bulgaria. We this was of it is quite clear that the racist abuse, to some extent, had been organised. Now when you look back, clearly this wasnt a problem that started inside the stadium, was it . It looks organised. That wouldnt be allowed in our own stadium. Whether they left of their own accord, or they were asked to leave, it looked co ordinated. The authorities had pretty much 72 hours once the Czech Republic game finished can make it to get rings ready and they knew the eyes of the world were watching and they didnt ta ke world were watching and they didnt take the opportunity. How shocked we re take the opportunity. How shocked were you . Not to shop, u nfortu nately. Were you . Not to shop, unfortunately. My colleague was on the airwaves yesterday saying the same thing happened to him in the same thing happened to him in the same stadium 12 years ago. These are repeat offenders and repeat offences. If you look at, as we lead up offences. If you look at, as we lead up to the game, the mood music coming out for is very much denial. England have got a problem, it is not just us, well, england have got a problem, it is notjust us, well, that is fine but you know the spotlight is going to be on you for that one game and you have onejob to be on you for that one game and you have one job to make sure that goes off without incident and they didnt do it. What about the team . They seemed to be so dignified in their response. What would you say about it . I fully agree. The way they conducted themselves was a wee sometimes forget these are young quys sometimes forget these are young guys and they are put in situations which they shouldnt have to be. What stood out was the solidarity. The players, the staff, the captain, they all spoke as one. It was interesting seeing the footage of Jordan Henderson illustrating, i mean, iam Jordan Henderson illustrating, i mean, i am not an expert on poly body language but it seems to be suggesting with the coach there was no problem. Jordan is saying there is an absolute problem, we can hear it. Colleagues and friends are being abused and we are not standing for it. Is clearly a problem in football but it is also a problem in society. Iam not but it is also a problem in society. I am not just but it is also a problem in society. I am notjust talking about bulgaria. You said we have our own issues back here in the uk, too. Yeah we have. Players are being abused on social media. All the stakeholders in football, having conversations with Online Companies to see what can be done. Also issues we cant look past, there is going to bea we cant look past, there is going to be a spotlight for boeing in the national anthem. To be in a stadium which you are fortunate enough to be in when teams are respecting both anthems, it is really uplifting. Thats something that has to be addressed as well. What happens to bulgaria now, do you think . Well, you feel for someone like the captain. You see his response, imploring the fans to behaviour. The Prime Minister made all the right noises yesterday be going back to what i was saying, 12 years ago, the same thing. I am one of those who supported the players if youd come off or stayed on but the ultimate sanction is wet walking off and they stopped short of that. They said almost to the ball is in your court, uefa, and it is up to you now to ta ke uefa, and it is up to you now to take it on. Unfortunately, an example has got to be made. It is such a high profile game because of this is a really watershed moment andi this is a really watershed moment and i think uefa have really got to do it. Further than they have gone in the past. Do you have faith that they will do that . Track record isnt great, i must say. A game of such a high profile nature, have almost got to. We will be watching and hoping that is what happens. Thank you very much indeed, iffy. The republic of ireland missed a chance to qualify for next summers european championships after losing 2 0 to switzerland. Ireland almost lost the captain to a red card. Their hopes rest on next months home game against denmark. The tejeda limped off after the qualifying mash with switzerland. The game finished 1 1 meaning spain vilified for next years finals. Andy murray is through to the second round of the european european open in belgium. He beat the home favourite Kimmer Coppejans in straight sets in antwerp, winning 6 a, 7 6. Murray said he would have given up on the game had it not been for the support and encouragement of his wife. Carol is giving us an update on the weather. I have been told you want to give us an update on jellyfish. Not yet. You can see one of our weather watcher s pictures of london showing how great it is. Rain is moving through and blustery at that. You mentioned jellyfish. Let me show you some pictures. If you dont like them, look away now. There has been a surge of portuguese man o war jellyfish. There has been a surge of portuguese man o warjellyfish. Here it is just lying on the shores, washed up in the south and west coasts of ireland. It is due, we think, or scientists think, because of the south westerly winds and storms that we have had recently, most recently storm lorenzo, for example. The tentacles are highly venomous. If you see one, do not touch it, dont even go near it, i would say because of you can see the tops of them, the white area, it looks like the fin and that is what the wind catches and that is what the wind catches and they are blown in the direction of the wind and that is why they have come up on the shore. These pictures are shown to us by rta. This morning what we have is also the rain this morning what we have is also the rain i was mentioning coming in from the west, heading towards the east. In the last hour, we have had 11 to eight millimetres. Almost an inch, is 25 millimetres was almost 25 millimetres. High pressure moves in behind and low pressure waiting in the wings. That will bring us unsettled, showery conditions as we head on through the rest of the week. First of all, we say goodbye to this rain and murky start around the pennines, that will clear. The rain across orkney, getting into shetland in the evening. Then for scotland, Northern Ireland, northern england, a bright day with Sunshine Coast of Northern Ireland, you are already starting to see that. One or two showers being the exception rather than the rule. We could see them in south west wales, South West England. Cabbages raising from ranging from 11 in the north to 16 in the south. Through this evening and overnight, we say goodbye to the rain. Under a transient range of High Pressure, we will have clear skies. In sheltered glens and sheltered parts of north east england, the temperature could fall low enough for a touch of a frost. Add towards the west, more cloud and showers, because we have the area of low pressure coming we start off on a nippy note and then already we will have the showers packing into the west, rotating around the area of low pressure. On the blustery winds, some of them will make it over towards the east but some of the showers were merged to give some heavier downfalls. Also the risk of hail and thunder embedded in those. Summer showers are embedded in those. Summer showers a re really embedded in those. Summer showers are really clumping so you might be stuck under one for some time and then you get a brief respite and then you get a brief respite and then another batch coming your way. Some will miss them all together. Into the weekend, low pressure is still remaining with us. It is still going to be quite unsettled with those showers. Still potential for showers to merge, giving heavier downfalls of rain. Across the irish sea down towards sussex and kent and east anglia but they will still be some dry and bright conditions in between and sunday still remains showery as well. I apologise for stealing your jellyfish binder, carol. Thank you for the warnings as well. Ben was with us just before seven oclock this morning promising to look at figures from asos. What do you have for us . This is asos, the retail giant that grew from Humble Beginnings. Its original name was as seen on screen, 20 years ago when it was founded and it really was a retail pioneer online. Today, it sells 800 rounds through its website and 9 most customers in the uk buy stuff through their mobile phone but it is a difficult market with new and quick competitors stealing market share. Its biggest rival overtook asos this year and even traditional high street retailers are doing well with their online sales. As well as the extra competition, asos has suffered supply issues. Head has been expanding quickly overseas and says it has done that too quickly and has not been looking after its existing customers. It was forced to wish you not one but two profit warnings this year and share price has slumped by half. Latest results of coming within the last hour and profits were down by nearly even though sales were up. They admit it has been a tough year and there is a lot to do to get the business back on track. So lets speak to the editor of the fashion magazine draper whojoins us editor of the fashion magazine draper who joins us now. Editor of the fashion magazine draper whojoins us now. Morning. Talk through these figures. It is fascinating to this is a position where sales can fall 70, sorry, profits falling by 70 but sales are up profits falling by 70 but sales are up by profits falling by 70 but sales are up by 15 . We have seen operational issues with the warehouses having problems in the us and europe. Something they have been unable to deliver the volume of clothing they need to meet demand and then we also haveissues need to meet demand and then we also have issues happening in the wider market with problems in downturn in spending and low Consumer Confidence and a lot of discounting as well. That eats into profit. Lets break down some of those issues. For an online retailer to be out of stock is worrying because you go to the online retailers because they have more size and more choice with the chance of being in stock. How are they running out of stock . They have been trying to improve these warehouses because they have grown so quickly and i think that is where the problem lies, they have had to invest money into the warehouses to make sure they have capacity and that has come with many issues in terms of upscaling quickly. And that is why they have had these issues. The reputation is staked on having fast and easy delivery and returns. We also have a sense that returns are one of the biggest cost for these online firms, processing them and getting them back on shelves. And that has taken toll on profits. Convenient for us and expensive for them. They announced on a crackdown on serial is a them. They announced on a people
