Its the first time in months of demonstrations that a protestor has been injured by live ammunition. Police say the officer opened fire because he felt his life was under threat. Indeed, i guess if you were watching the pictures from last night of the violent clashes we saw in the city of hong kong, you may be wondering how is it possible that the streets of hong kong have returned to normal. But this has become something of a new normal now with violent clashes on the weekend or on special occasions like today when china was celebrating the 70th anniversary since the foundation of the peoples republic of china. Of course, after the 18 year old protester was shot in the chest it has really started a discussion about how the police use live ammunition. Protesters have been sitting outside his school to show support. Some students are saying that they should boycott school as well today. Joining me now as a Hong Kong Based writer who has been following these protest closely. Thank you forjoining us today. So the shooting last night, we are now starting to see a lot of forensic analysis of what happened. It is good news that he is now in a stable condition. But what is your assessment of what happened last night . The footage has been interesting now that a footage from a number of angles has come out. Clearly, Police Officers had reasons to be concerned for their safety. The question is did they have concern for their life. That is the first issue raised by the footage to the second law concerning issue is that the officer had in his other hand a shotgun that fired non lethal ammunition. Why he chose to use the lethal munition rather than the gun was a big question when protesters were only armed with steel bars and batons and nothing in immediate danger of threatening their life. After witnessing one of their life. After witnessing one of the west violence i think it is fair to say, yesterday, we expect more protest today of what they accuse as police brutality. But once the what is the next move of the protesters . What is the next move of the protesters . You have been following them carefully. There is a sense of determination. I dont think the protesters will be cowed or frightened by this development. There is still a great deal of anger at the police and even intensified by what has happened yesterday. At the same time, there is a sense of desperation among protesters that we have been coming out week after week and been clashing with the police, what more can we do . It will be interesting to see in the coming days whether indeed the protesters choose to escalate further. They dial it back to a non violent form of protest in a way of response . It will be interesting to see. And i do not think they will back down or walk away. We also have about 100 protesters arrested on sunday appearing in court and about a thousand other protesters have shown up thousand other protesters have shown up to express their support. One of the demands of the protesters is the amnesty of the arrested protesters. You are also a lawyer. Is that a reasonable request from the rule of law point of view . I dont think so. One of the core values i think eve ryo ne one of the core values i think everyone agrees on four hong kong is the rule of law and that means that the rule of law and that means that the law is applied impartially to everybody in society. The best response for the government to that demand for amnesty is to say, look, we will prosecute everyone who has committed a crime on any side, be it protesters or police and the government should do that in conjunction with an independent enquiry and investigation of police behaviour. I think it is difficult for protesters to sustain an argument wanting an investigation of police but also an amnesty for their own side. The best way to deal with thatis own side.
