To avoid collapse. The woman who claims she was abused by Prince Andrew speaks out. Buckingham palace emphatically denies the duke of york had any sexual contact with her. And at 11 30pm well be taking an in depth look at the papers with our reviewers, madeline grant and jason beattie. Good evening. Millions of people including children and young teenagers, have taken part in demonstrations around the world, demanding tougher action on Climate Change. Huge crowds gathered in cities in more than 150 countries, they were all calling for governments and businesses to do more to save the planet. The teenage activist, Greta Thunberg, who protested alone outside the Swedish Parliament last year to draw attention to Climate Change, is tonight leading a march in new york, from where nick bryant reports. Dont let our people die Climate Change is not a lie the protests followed the sun. From the low lying Pacific Islands to drought ridden australia, from the streets of south africa to the Brandenburg Gate in berlin. The children of the world, the inheritors of our Climate Change crisis. What do we want . Climate justice when do we want it . Now young voices speaking with passion and urgency, because theirs is the future thats at stake. Considering we have such a short amount of time to turn this issue around, its vital that young people are at the forefront of this conversation because they will be impacted more than anyone else. What the youth can do is talk about the problem and make noise about it and demand it from the people who can create a change. There is no time. Time is up, time is running, and this is our last chance to do something. In westminster, a place more commonly filled with brexit protesters, was thronged of People United in concern for the planet. And there were similar scenes across britain belfast, bristol, birmingham, smaller towns and rural communities. As yet another demonstration took shape in new york, we spoke to the 16 year old activist Greta Thunberg, whos become the insistent voice of this restless generation. Did you ever think it could end up with Something Like this . My dad woke me up today, and he said, it is massive, you need to see these pictures. And then i went up, and ijust saw these pictures, and i couldnt stop looking, because it was just so overwhelming. And you cannot believe its real. This is not only my voice, this is the voice of millions of people around the world. But i think it is because we are young, and we are the ones who are going to have to live with this in the future. Then she saw for herself on the streets in manhattan the Multiplier Effect of this movement. In this most global of cities, more than a million kids had been given permission to skip class, to make their voices heard. What do we want . Climate justice when do we want it . Now this extraordinary mobilisation really feels like a milestone moment, a day maybe well talk about for decades to come. The question is whether this Climate Change activism will translate into Climate Change action. Youre here marching today. What are you planning to do for the rest of the year . Im going to eat less meat, im going to recycle as much as i can. Im going to everyone around me aware. Im going to do try and do what is best for me as well as best for the earth. It felt like the white house was in a different century today. Donald trump, the president whos taking the United States out of the paris Climate Change accord, welcoming the australian prime minister, scott morrison, a leader who once proudly brandished a piece of coal in his parliament to emphasise the centrality of fossil fuels to his countrys economy. The children are demanding that its time to put the environment first. To some, this will be a confronting reminder of how successive generations of adults have let down the young. But in this planetary day of action, these children can tell their children that they marched. Nick bryant, bbc news, new york. The eyes of the world will be on them. They have a chance to prove that they too are united behind the science, they have a chance to take leadership to prove they actually hear us. Do you think they hear us . No we will make them hear us. Claimant activist Greta Thunberg there todays protests come ahead next weeks un Climate Change summit in new york, where World Leaders will discuss how best to address global warming. With his analysis of their options, heres our science editor, david shukman. A stark reminder of what the protests are all about. These people ona protests are all about. These people on a pacific island, it is a matter of life and death, whether their country can actually survive in future. As the planet heats up, this is raised, and for millions of people in low lying communities, the threats are already extreme and are set to become much worse. I saw myself two weeks ago how the ice of greenland is melting, adding to the level of the oceans. And scientists are more melting will follow. All the time, human activities keep adding to the problem. This is indonesia right now. The fires are immense, like in the arm is on, and there release Carbon Dioxide into there release Carbon Dioxide into the air, and it makes the rising temperatures even faster. The challenges that the world is on a course towards Dangerous Levels of warming. The global average temperature has already risen by one degree over the last 150 years or so. Degree over the last 150 years or so. And scientists a 1. 5 degrees is the maximum safe level. Anything more risks a range of damaging impacts. But we are currently heading towards the three degrees rise by the end of the century, and thatis rise by the end of the century, and that is even evolve the climate promises made by governments are kept, if nothing is done, some fear an increase of four degrees would potentially have catastrophic results. So what can be done . Well, the un wants more Renewable Energy like wind turbines. Today, the British Government approved hundreds more. There will cost far less than expected. In the same way, the price of solar power has fallen, and the un is hoping the summit next week will see new promises to build more installations like this. But hard fa cts installations like this. But hard facts remain. Much of the world depends on cold, the dirtiest of the fossil fuels. Depends on cold, the dirtiest of the fossilfuels. And moving away depends on cold, the dirtiest of the fossil fuels. And moving away from it is difficult. Leaders, including President Trump support it. There will be a struggle ahead. David shukman, bbc news. Labours ruling National Executive committee, is to hold a vote on whether to abolish the post of deputy leader, currently held by tom watson. Hes publicly disagreed with labours position on brexit, saying the party should back a second referendum on eu membership and campaign to remain. The vote on deputy leader will be held in the morning. Our Political Correspondent Jessica Parker is at westminster. Jessica, i understand this is actually a second attempt now that we will see tomorrow. What has happened is earlier this evening there was a National Executive committee, labours body, they meet frequently during the conference period. There was an emergency motion put forward by the founder of momentum. Momentum was founded in support ofjeremy corbyn with the idea of abolishing the post of deputy leader, in effect, moving tom watson out of that role by abolishing that post. What we understand is that sheraton is meeting ruled that out of order. But there was another boat and they decided to put it on the nec agenda for tomorrow morning. If that motion passes, and many expected will, it would then go to the conference floor. So all those people, delegates, unions who sit and loads as delegates who sit and vote as delegates, would vote. This was an emergency motion, people didnt know it was happening, and i think it was going to spark a lot of anger over the next 12 hours. We cant be sure what is going to happen, but a lot of labour mps dating to twitter tonight suggesting this is a huge distraction because the labour party up my distraction because the labour party up my conference or what any conferences supposed to be about is a chance for the party to set out its style, advertise its policies, presenting a united front, and perhaps people, some people in labour, it may be both sides of the argument will say this is particularly important to be doing given a general election is right around the corner. Has there been any indication of tom watsons own reaction to this . I havent personally spoken to tom watson this evening, i have spoken to some of those around him, some of his allies, they are incredibly gross. Because this motion was sprung on them very last minute cross. They think it was an underhanded move and he wasnt himself able to be at and is meeting because here had childcare issues, he was doing childcare. So they think what happened was very underhanded. Tom watson will be coming down to brighton for the nec meeting, one presumes he will be trying to make his case. But i think more broadly, allies of tom watson, those in the party who support his stance on brexit, he thinks very clearly the labour party should be a remain and reform party. But his allies tonight we re reform party. But his allies tonight were defending him and i think that would be manoeuvres to try and stop maybe this motion from going towards the conference floor. You cant say for sure exactly what is going to happen. Potentially it could be pulled, i dont know, if they think it is going to be too much of a distraction. I think the problem could be for the labour party bosses and labour party leadership, even if some people were in support of the notion of getting rid of tom watson, he has been seen as something of a thorn injeremy corbyns side, they may not want those headlines. Labour party civil war, battle for the soul of the labour party over the headlines they would probably want, focusing on the policies they are going to outline as they head towards a possible general election. Thank you very much, Jessica Parker, from westminster. The struggling travel firm, thomas cook, has approached the government for a bailout. An extra £200 million of funding is needed to prevent the company falling into administration, with 9,000 jobs on the line. A collapse could leave 150,000 british holidaymakers stranded abroad. Heres our north of england correspondent, judith moritz. Thomas cook is one of the best known names in travel. At any time, there are up to 100 of its planes in the air, and it has 19 million customers a year, but the operators financial problems have mounted, and news that it faces administration is a real headache for holiday makers. Jacqui cunningham has already cancelled her dream holiday once, after being diagnosed with Breast Cancer two years ago. Now the trip, which she rebooked to celebrate her recovery, is in doubt again. We have booked a holiday to the maldives, and we are due to pay our final balance, which is £8,000, but we dont know, because of the predicament thomas cook are in, whether we do pay the last part or whether we just lose the deposit we have already paid. Thomas cook has been struggling for several years, blaming issues including last summers heatwave and customers uncertainty over brexit. It still has more than 500 shops and employs 9,000 uk staff. But its found it hard to stay in profit. There are 49 thomas cook flights coming and going from here at Manchester Airport alone today, but with the next 2a hours critical to the companys survival, holiday makers are travelling in the knowledge that, if it goes into administration while they are away, they could become stranded and need the governments help to get home. It would be the biggest ever such emergency repatriation effort. Package holidays will also be protected under the atol scheme, and many flights through credit cards or travel insurance. Currently, there are 600,000 thomas cook customers on holiday, of which up to 160,000 are from the uk. The Civil Aviation authority is understood to be on standby to repatriate tourists at a potential cost of £600 million. The British Government said today it stood ready to do everything possible. Tonight its understood that thomas cook has asked for a bailout. Judith moritz, bbc news, manchester. Earlier i spoke to steve wardle, whose daughter, sharna, is due to get married on a thomas cook package in kos next year. We spoke to her this morning, she spoke to me at work. Some of her friends were texting saying there we re friends were texting saying there were issues with thomas cook. We knew a little bit about it and the worry is there. People have put a lot of money into it. They have been four years in the planning for this wedding she is really, really worried. What has she been saying to you . She isjust saying maybe it is an omen, that she is not going to have the fairytale wedding and it will just be have the fairytale wedding and it willjust be a registry office. That is really quite sad. A lot of people, getting married, it is difficult and stressful enough. But how much planning has gone into this marriage abroad . 0h, how much planning has gone into this marriage abroad . Oh, well. Her fiance proposed to herfour marriage abroad . Oh, well. Her fiance proposed to her four years ago and we only booked this about 1. 5 years ago to tie everybody to come to the wedding. There are 35 people who have booked this package holiday so the organisation behind it has just been immense. Holiday so the organisation behind it hasjust been immense. And it is not cheap, is it . No, not at all. You are talking 1300 pounds ahead so there are over £45,000 involved in this. What are you telling guests and friends and family who are asking questions, what do you know . We are getting no contact from thomas cook, only business as usual which we expect them to do because it could cause a bigger problem if they come out in the press and say, you know, cancel bookings and things like that. So i understand that stop but it doesnt solve the problem of the people who have booked with us. Soiama the people who have booked with us. So i am a little bit concerned. Sharnas or any thinking about an alternative, whether it is a weekend venue alternative, whether it is a weekend venue for alternative, whether it is a weekend venue for everyone, alternative, whether it is a weekend venue for everyone, that im just saying lets ride it out and see where it takes us, really. In terms of the money because a lot of people have paid for this holiday, what portion has been put down already . Right, well, iwould portion has been put down already . Right, well, i would say there is at least 20 right, well, i would say there is at least 20 25,000 right, well, i would say there is at least 20 25,000 been paid. If you are doing it on instalments but we are doing it on instalments but we are fairlyfar are doing it on instalments but we are fairly far into the instalment payment. Wedding is injune next year so the majority of the money will be paid and it is protected by atoll but how quick they will pay it back for us to reorganise it again, because it is a lot of money at £1300 ahead. A head. Because it is a lot of money at £1300 ahead. A headlj because it is a lot of money at £1300 ahead. A head. I am looking at the statement from thomas cook. They are talking about unsettled by all of the media speculation, all of the pocket Package Holidays remain fully atoll protected. What is your message to thomas cook . |j understand is your message to thomas cook . understand it is atoll protected but they should still get in touch with us. They should still get in touch with us. At least send an e mail, keep us involved. Atol. If it does go to the wire, where our negotiations . If it looks like it will be a positive outcome, just do not know. The headlines on bbc news millions of people protest around the world to demand greater action on Climate Change. Labours ruling body is to hold a vote on whether to abolish the post of deputy leader, currently held by tom watson. Thousands ofjobs are at risk and british holiday makers could be left stranded, if thomas cook faces collapse. Her allegations first came to light in court papers lodged against the billionaire businessman jeffrey epstein, whod been accused of trafficking underage girls. Wed leave club tramp, and id hop in the car with ghislaine and jeffrey, and ghislaine said, he is coming back to the house, and i want you to do for him what you do for epstein. Buckingham palace says, it is emphatically denied that the duke of york had any form of sexual contact or relationship with Virginia Roberts. The boyfriend of the teenager jodie chesney, who was stabbed in a random attack in a park in east london, has told a court that she screamed continuously for two minutes after the assault, and that it took around 15 minutes for the Emergency Services to arrive. Two men and two teenagers are on trial at the old bailey, charged with the murder of the 17 year old, in march. Dan johnson reports. Today, eddie coyle gave his account of the last moments of his girlfriends life, describing how two men come out of the dark in an instant and she was fatally stabbed. They had been together forjust three months and he said she was a great person, funny, sometimes silly, sometimes sensible. He told the jury they were in the park with friends, listening to music, drinking and smoking cannabis, when two hooded men approached without a word being said. He demonstrated to the jury how the taller man raised his arm and swung it towardsjodies back. Close to tears at one point, eddie said, jodie was in shock at first she didnt know what had happened. She just started screaming. She screamed very loudly, he said, continuously for about two minutes straight. Then she began to faint. We cant name two of the defendants, who are 16 and 17. The jury heard svenson 0ng a kwie was seen on cctv the next morning getting rid of some of his clothes. Manuel petrovic is accused of driving them in his car on the night. All four deny murder. Anotherfriend ofjodies, bryce henderson, recounted how he previously bought cannabis from a local drug dealer called spencer. He denied there was any outstanding debt or a feud. But earlier this weekjodie was described as the innocent victim of a row over drugs. Her boyfriend said there was no reason for anyone to hurt her. Dan johnson, bbc news, at the old bailey. Next week across bbc news, well be taking a close look at the city of stoke on trent as part of our we are series. The city at the heart of the staffordshire pottery industry is made up of six towns tu nstall, burslem, hanley, stoke, fenton and longton. Being one city of six towns brings a number of challenges. 0ur editorial director, kamal ahmed, met people at the Potteries Museum and art gallery to find out what makes stoke tick. Welcome to the Pottery Museum and art gallery at stoke on trent. This is our third art gallery at stoke on trent. This is ourthird in art gallery at stoke on trent. This is our third in the we are series was not we have had we are middlesbrough and we are bradford. It is an attempt for the bbc to get out of london, to properly cover regions of england as well as the nations of the united kingdom, but really it is about the audience talking to us about how we should be covering what is important to them and this will be a week of special coverage from stoke on trent, guided by these fabulous guests we have brought together in the Potteries Museum about what they think is important, how they would like to see their city, places they live, places they work, how they want thoseissues places they work, how they want those issues to be covered. places they work, how they want those issues to be covered. I think there is a great degree of fear in this city. We are scared of our selves and our schizophrenic six towns of nature. There is something you deeply crazy and mad about that is the way we work. I think it should be embraced. And as we sit here under the wonderful icons that decorate us, i do wonder sometimes, dont we realise that there is something about the dues and the actual soil of this area which has allowed us to be one of the most creative places on earth. We are a place where we have taken the ground itself and made it into something which you can see all around you. Now, not many places on this planet that can actually argue that. now, not many places on this planet that can actually argue that. I am quite shocked by the notion of the £10 fast quite shocked by the notion of the £10 fast £10 quite shocked by the notion of the £10 fast £10 bus return fare. Quite shocked by the notion of the £10 fast £10 bus return fare. The transport network has separated the towns, in effect was not so the towns, in effect was not so the towns have not worked together because there is no connectivity. And again, particularly working with young people, public transport is very important in the city so i think with work and leisure and creative activities, people really struggle to kind of get around and get to places. One of the real problems, if you go from the southernmost town, longton, to say the northernmost town, if you try to make that journey the northernmost town, if you try to make thatjourney by public transport, it would take at least an hour longer than your trip up from london. Robert about 2. 5 hours. May be from younger perspective, tell us what you would like to see covered about this city . There are lots more things in manchester and birmingham to do for people like my age and younger than to stay in stoke. Doesnt really have anything. There isnt really many jobs doesnt really have anything. There isnt really manyjobs and a lot of people and my friends who are finishing university, they arejust going elsewhere. They dont want to have anything to do with stoke on trent. Have anything to do with stokeontrent. The challenges faced here in stoke on trent are no different than they are in other post industrialised cities. What we have had over the last ten years or more is a recognition that there is no white knight out there that is going to come, we have got to stand up going to come, we have got to stand up and take responsibility and do this for ourselves. What should be next for stoke on trent . 0h this for ourselves. What should be next for stoke on trent . Oh i absolutely think we should be a unesco creative city. We have what no other city around the world has that would allow us to have those other bidding process that we had to that we went through, a unesco creative city has longevity. Tell us what the main challenges are. The biggest problem in stoke on trent is pride. People used to work and used to bed at things like what did on things like what is behind you. There is no pride anymore. 0h can i mention politics asa mirror anymore. 0h can i mention politics as a mirrorfor anymore. 0h can i mention politics as a mirror for society. Anymore. 0h can i mention politics as a mirrorfor society. For instance, it is not so long ago that we had nine councils. Quite recently, we are the third or second biggest brexit supporter and none of these, of course, tell us exactly what we are and who we are. What it does tell us is there is an immense amount of disenchantment here. Rachel, how would you like to see the we are stoke project . There is so much opportunity, an abundance of community spirit. There is a lot going on. We have our issues and with the i think we need to focus on that. But there is also a lot of great stuff in the city. I think in stoke, house prices, you can get in the property market. There is a better standard of of living, a better standard of of living, a Better Family life balance. Better standard of of living, a Better Family life balance. We have a problem with people on the outside seeing the inside. That has to change was not i have seen reports that the bbc have done and i think ifi that the bbc have done and i think if i was in my rolls royce or my bentley, coming to the m6 at birmingham to invest x Million Pound in here, i would say, turnaround, charles, i dont want to go to stoke on trent. That is the perception that you get from the media. This is a coalmining place and what is the great thing that coalmining has . Diamonds, crushed pressure. There is a diamond in the city that needs to come out. Thank you everybody. That was enjoyable, invigorating and really helped us cover your great city. The positives as well as some of the challenges. Now, the weather. 0ne now, the weather. One thing is for sure. The weather next week will look very different from the weather of the week just look very different from the weather of the weekjust gone. Make the most of the weekjust gone. Make the most of the weekjust gone. Make the most of the sunshine while you have it this weekend. High pressure that has brought the sunshine is drifting further east across europe. We have a weather front waiting to change the weather in from the atlantic. From the time being, we are drawing in warmth on a brief south easterly wind. There is a sunshine on the way. First signs of change in the far south west of wales and later on as the cloud builds and we get one or two showers but elsewhere it is dry. Judith moritz, bbc news, manchester.
