For her part in the Us College Admissions scandal. We all know the impact of Carbon Dioxide emissions on global warming, now the bbc has learnt of the damage being caused by a far more potent gas used in electrical devices. Frolicking foxes, naughty penguins, and dancing lions. We reveal the finalists of the comedy wildlife photgraphy awards. Hello and welcome to world news today. Britains Prime MinisterBoris Johnson says he is cautiously optimistic of getting a brexit deal. Hell travel to luxembourg on monday for his first meeting since taking office with the European Commission president , jean claude juncker, and the eu chief brexit negotiator, michel barnier. But for his part, mr barnier said he did not have reasons to be optimistic. Mrjohnson faced heckling as he spoke at an event in Northern England, as our deputy political editor, john pienaar reports. The names boris, borisjohnson. Trust me. It looks like campaigning, and it is, for future votes and for trust that hes the one deliver brexit, no more delays. An exciting time, he told one supporter. Not exciting, worrying, she said. Maybe worrying for him too, wanting a brexit deal, attacked by critics for closing the commons. Im all in favour of our mps. Why are you not with them in parliament sorting out the mess that you made . Get back to parliament and sort it out he is being heckled by the Commons Speaker too, who has warned of more laws to ban or no deal brexit, may be forced another extension. Whatever the shenanigans that may be going on at westminster, we will get on with delivering our agenda and preparing to take this country out of the eu on october the 31st. What chance of a deal . He is hoping for a last minute breakthrough. I am cautiously optimistic. Is that good enough characterisation . I am cautiously optimistic. He will meet the eu Commission President in luxembourg on monday, still a long way from agreement. His Democratic Unionist Party allies want to be convinced by a brexit deal that they see as no threat to the union, and they havent been. We are not going to vote for any arrangement which makes us different than the rest of the United Kingdom and as a result forms the border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom. As far as the Irish Government is concerned, our position hasnt changed. I would have to say that what has been put forward so far falls far short of what we need. So the chances of a deal still seem remote, but that doesnt mean it cant happen. It would certainly help borisjohnson out of a tight political corner. If he is forced to extend brexit, he could expose the tories to a potentially serious threat from the brexit party. And now could a law that can virtually outlaw a no deal brexit lead to that very extension . Wanting a deal, even needing one, wont necessarily make it happen. Where there is a political will, there is often a political way. But no one has found it yet. Meanwhile former Prime MinisterDavid Cameron has broken his silence in an interview with the times and has some harsh words for those currently in charge of brexit. Well have the latest from westminster in a few moments. The us Actress Felicity Huffman has now been sentenced to m days in jail following her involvement in the Us College Admissions scandal. The desperate housewives actress was involved in a plan to fix her daughters exam results and help her get into good schools. In a letter to a judge, huffman described her desperation to be a good mum as one of the reasons she was involved. Lets go straight to the bbcs gary 0 donoghue. We have discussed the sentence. 14 days. Which is about half with the prosecution were looking for. They think she shouldve got a month behind bars, as well as the 14 days and some community service. She has said before the sentencing that you would deserve whatever she got and she emerged from the court not saying anything. She reports her the jail in16 saying anything. She reports her the jail in 16 days time and are particularly she moved quickly, showed all of the right things in terms of throwing herself on the mercy of the court. So it may not be quite what she wanted and her lawyers wanted her to accept no jail time at all, but she will get two weeks and shall six weeks time which means you can go to the enemies, apparently. Next sunday with one of the show shes involved with one of the show shes involved with this up for and remind us what actually happened here and what she did. She was a part of a group of pa rents did. She was a part of a group of parents who, wealthy parents from show business from professions like business, who are trained to help their children into the best universities in the country and that involved in various ways helping to fix what they called sat scores which are effectively exams that universitiesjudge you which are effectively exams that universities judge you on and in some cases, not in her case, they tried to get designated as an athlete, which would allow you easier passage into some really good schools here as well and in some extreme cases, some parents were having people sit in place of their children personally. Thejudge made it clear that she was on the ones who paid one of the smaller bribes those up positive thing for the judge and did not involve her child and the deception, her child did not know anything about it and for that reason, thisjudge in boston has not gone to the extreme that he might have done in terms of the actual length. If we get any more reaction in boston, we will return. In november next year the us will choose its next president. Who will take on donald trump for the democrats is still unclear. The front runner isjoe biden, former Vice President to president obama. Last night he faced nine other candidates in a tv debate lasting nearly three hours. What did it reveal . Sophie long reports from houston. The democratic partys top ten president ial candidates meeting on the same stage for the first time. A different line up but a now familiar dynamic. Former Vice President joe biden fighting to preserve his front runner status as those trailing behind vying for attention. The first fireworks came on the key issue of health care. For a socialist, youve got a lot more confidence in Corporate America than i do. Youve got to defend the fact that 500,000 americans are going bankrupt. For the first time in their series of debates, and state were 29 people in a state were 29 people have been killed into Mass Shootings in the space of one month, there was detailed discussion on gun crime and this was what got the biggest cheer. Hell yes, we are going to take your ar 15, your ak 47. We will not allow it to be used against fellow americans any more the sharpest attacks on the moderate man in the middle came from outside runnerjulian castro. Some on the stage felt he went too far when he repeatedly questioned the 76 year olds short term memory. Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago . Already joe biden was a no show in the postdebate spin room, but it was that exchange with the former housing secretary that they were talking about. Certainly he was uncomfortable to be standing there. We had a disagreement in the health care policy. Do you think they went too far . No. As front runnerjoe biden was always going to be the man with the target on his back and his challenges came here with plenty of ammunition, but some candidates try to emphasise areas of agreement and kept their greatest criticism for the man they all desperately want to beat, president donald trump. Im not here to criticise anyone. Im here to talk about why i am running for president and my vision of what this country will be like. When we look at the fact that donald trump has been a failed president , a failed administration, broken promises, i think the American People know that the most important thing is that we focus on what we need to do to make sure theres not another four years of his administration. The morning after an candidates know the first vote of this contest will not be cast for nearly five months. Of those in the periphery of the stage last night will be starting to wonder if time to gain ground on those of the front of this race is now starting to run out. Its the most powerful Greenhouse Gas known to humanity one that can cause terrible damage to the atmosphere yet most people will have never heard of it. Sulphur hexa fluoride or sf6 as its known is widely used to prevent fires and accidents in Electrical Equipment in power stations, Wind Turbines in fact right across the electricity grid. But when it leaks it can have dire consequences for the environment. And it has been leaking the levels of sf6 have risen rapidly in the atmosphere in recent years. Across the eu alone leaks have been equivalent to the emissions of 1. 3 million extra vehicles on the road injust one year. Matt mcgrath, investigates whats behind the rise. Were about to witness the startling destructive power of electricity, as technicians prepare a short circuit test at this laboratory. This is why industry rely so heavily on sf6. It prevents overloads that destroy installations. But the gas is also the most powerful climate warming substance known to science, 23,500 times more damaging than Carbon Dioxide, and levels in the atmosphere are increasing. Its leaking into the air faster than ever before. This is a very potent Greenhouse Gas, and its very long lived. So what we put up in the atmosphere will essentially stay there for hundreds or thousands of years. If we dont cut emissions, welljust continue to add to that atmospheric burden. The main reason for the rise in the use of sf6 has been the change in the way we make electricity. In the past, we relied on a handful of large coal stations for our power, but these have been replaced by dozens of wind farms, requiring many more substations and connections to the grid. The electricity generated by wind farms is sent via underwater cables to substations on land. It travels along high voltage lines, and the power is then converted so it can be used in homes and offices all over the uk. On every step of the journey, switches and fuses are used to prevent short circuits and fires. But around 80 of the ones in the uk depend on the powerful Greenhouse Gas, sf6. The eu will review the regulations on sf6 in 2020, but some Energy Companies are sensing that change is coming. This new wind farm being built off the coast of east anglia is one of the first and largest in the world constructed without sf6. However, there are limitations. The turbines here are connected to the substation, and that still relies on the gas. But at this factory in the netherlands, they have been making electrical switch products without sf6 for decades. They are ready for a0 years in the field and they are reliable, they are safe and they are really working with no use of sf6. Changing from sf6, a reliable and Cost Effective insulating material, wont be easy. The industry regulator ofgem says its setting targets for companies to move away from the gas. But a ban on the substance is thought unlikely before 2025. Stay with us on bbc world news, still to come strike a pose. Well have you laughing like a hyena at the finalists for the comedy wildlife photography awards borisjohnson says he is cautiously optimistic about a brexit deal as he prepares for his first face to face talks of the european union. The desperate housewife staff sentenced to two weeks in prison for securing to 1a days in prison for fraudulently securing a place at a Top University for her daughter. Lets go back to brexit now and former Prime MinisterDavid Cameron has broken his silence on brexit in an interview with the times. He has some harsh words for those currently in charge. Joining me now to discuss that and more is political reporter helen catt David Cameron recalled the brexit referendum, he has stayed pretty quiet since then he has decided to change things, what has he come out and said . He has been virtually silent since he walked out of the doors of downing street, particularly on brexit. In his interview he is pre reflective when he looks back at it. We look for the referendum every single day he thinks about the consequences of the things that couldve been done differently. He also says he understands that there are some people who will never forgive him holding it and others who are glad that he did. But what he is clear about is that he does not feel he was wrong and what he did, part of the book that he has written is trying to explain why he felt that it was inevitable and he also has some harsh words for some of those involved in the leaf campaign, Boris Johnson, the now Prime Minister michael gove in the cabinet. He said that they behaved appallingly in the book, so there are some pretty harsh words and he also is looking at the situation out and says he would not support a no deal brexit and he says that you cannot rule out a second referendum. Not that they should not have one but he says that we are stuck you cannot rule out the blockages. Bringing the Brexit Debate right up to date where we are now, borisjohnson talking about optimism and finding a deal and having this meeting in europe next monday. What are the chances . What are the state of play right now . Meeting with the president of the European Commission with the chief brexit negotiator, there is expectation that is being played down here in westminster, it is the first time that they will of madsens Boris Johnson first time that they will of madsens borisjohnson became Prime Minister, but it is seen as an ongoing meeting in a series of face to face meet ups he has had with seniorfigures like face to face meet ups he has had with senior figures like angulo merkel, and emmanuel micron. It is just another phase in reaching a deal, not a just another phase in reaching a deal, nota big just another phase in reaching a deal, not a big breakthrough moment where he comes home and says that is it, we have done it. But it is not entirely clear what may be shifting if anything may help move towards a deal, it isjust if anything may help move towards a deal, it is just a if anything may help move towards a deal, it isjust a case if anything may help move towards a deal, it is just a case of another week of watching. Thank you very much for bringing this up to speed. Chettam has all the sport. Thank you europe have a one point lead over the United States and they would ta ke the United States and they would take a four the United States and they would takeafourand the United States and they would take a four and a half to three and have lead into the second day in scotland, a reporter was watching the action. Europe have never won a solheim cup with a lost the morning sessions so it was so important for Katrina Matthew inter European Team to get off to a good start and they certainly did. After the morning come they led by two and a half to one and a half, three of the english players are putting off pulling off good performances, securing a point and for time she has not played in the solheim cup despite just being 23. Looking into the afternoon youre wondering where the challenge from the americans may come and then it came early on from a record equalling victory in the match where they did ever so well to secure a 7 5 victory for them and shortly after europe got a point on the board and they were precious and getting that and it all came down to the drama with the final two matches. They did ever so well battling back from two down with four to play to go one up and coming down the 18th and a half, but the real disappointment for europe and the real good point for team usa was the real good point for team usa was the final match because charlie hall we re the final match because charlie hall were four up with six to play, however they ended up having that goal on the 18th. So it is a one point lead going into saturday. Joffries was the start of the show, before archer took six as australia we re before archer took six as australia were bullied out for 25, sam karen rips through as steve smith stood firm and our Sports Correspondent was at the oval. At the and of the first inning sent with the start of the second innings, we saw ten australian wickets, six of them to joffries archer, accuracy and stamina. And with the particular highlight, eventually falling for 48 and we had some chief wickets in the context of this series, not a bad score with steve smith. It seemed like a real victory in that week was taken by chris with smith making a rare mistake. Before hitting him. Ingrid hope to take this again smith so ingrid hope to take this again smith so many times so much earlier in the series. But we also had the impact for surrey making it 2 2 with his left arm swinging and maybe smith thought he would just run out but to close it, england survived a tricky speu close it, england survived a tricky spell and theyll be back on saturday morning and they will hope to end their long summer on a national high. Harry maguire is Manchester United captain material thatis Manchester United captain material that is what they said in the england defender coming up against his former team lassiter and premier league tomorrow and following the summer move league tomorrow and following the summer move and reckoning that theyre already one of the leaders of the club. He is definitely a character in a personality that can be captain of the club, a leader in the dressing room and he is both by performance, presence, stature, behaviour, he is a character. He is a character that you would like to follow and some are technical leaders, summer leaders by voice and hes got a lot, really. That is all of your support for now, that is all of your support what do a chilled out chimp, a jolly owl and a dancing grizzly have in common . It might sound like the setup to a childrens story, or a bad joke. But theyre all finalists in the comedy wildlife photography awards and they certainly live up to the name. The competition sees photgraphers compete to find creatures in the most adorable, and at times compromising positions. Earlier we spoke to tom sullam, co founder of the competition, who told us what motivated him and his partner to set it up. Very simply, i think paul and i got a bit tired of the shock images which are used often to raise awareness about animal conservation and we decided that there was a gap in the market for some humourous images that would possibly create a stronger link for these animals, human to animal. I think a lot of people get turned off by the images that we have seen of elephants and rhinos in those pictures have a place but we felt there was another approach to raising awareness of animal conservation. Primarily, theres a photographic aspect to it it has to be sharp, and focus, direct depth of field and the highlight in the eyes of the sort of standard expected for the wildlife image. The funny side is actually very difficult to choose. We have ninejudges and we all put our scores together in the winter literally has the most points at our humours differ. We have one that finds one thing funny and the other than find Something Else funny and ifind something, i mean, personally my favourite this year is the penguin farting. It is childish, does little bit gross but for me, it makes me laugh out loud. But there are so many variations. You know, if i ask five different people with their favourite pictures, you would never get the same answer. Dont forget you can get in touch with me and some of the team on twitter this is bbc news. Goodbye. The weather is looking pretty decent for much of the uk with lots of dry settled weather and sunshine but not dry everywhere. Cloud increasing with some patchy rain for northwest and perhaps a few showers to the north of ireland, with a light wind it is going to be quite a chilly night with temperatures well down into the mid single figures across england and wales with the mist and fog patches possible in the first thing. But looking dry, bright and sunny for Northern Ireland to a cloud over every scotland will see some heavy rain and strong wind working to the northwest. Temperatures around 17 degrees or so across parts of scotland and we could see 23 down towards the southeast of england. Gusts of wind with 40 to 60 mph through saturday afternoon and into the evening as well. Overnight that weather sinks its way further southwards some patchy rain for northern for Northern Ireland, Northern England and north wells, sunshine to the side of that front. 25 in london. Goodbye. At 10pm, clive myrie will be here with a full round up of the days news. First on bbc news, we look at how algerians are trying to rewrite the history of revolutions in the arabic speaking world, in algeria revolution of smiles. Until now, the demonstrations have been peaceful, with the army acting as referee between the people and the regime. But now it has to decide which side to back. For the first time, this film tells the full story of algerias protest movement, with exclusive footage of the demonstrations and the voices of people calling for change.
