Out a Record Number of fires in the amazon rainforest. The hot weather is set to last through the bank holiday, after record breaking temperatures today. And in half an hour well be taking an in depth look at the papers with our reviewers nigel nelson and jo phillips. Stay with us for that. Good evening. Borisjohnson has told the bbc that whether the uk leaves the eu with a deal at the end of october is now touch and go. The Prime Minister was speaking at the g7 summit in france, where hes also said no deal would mean keeping a substantial part of the £39 billion the uk had agreed to pay the eu. Hes also been meeting President Trump for the First Time Since becoming Prime Minister, as our chief Political Correspondent vicki young reports from biarritz. Side by side, but not quite in step. Borisjohnson hopes his american friend will help him out and boost trade between their two countries. But is this a partnership of equals or will the uk get trampled all over by its mighty ally . Do you know who this is, hes going to be a fantastic Prime Minister. And we are going to do a fantastic deal. Once we clear up some of the obstacles in our path. Sitting down over breakfast, donald trump said britains departure from the eu would be liberating. Were having very good trade talks between the uk and ourselves. Were going to do a very big trade deal, bigger than weve ever had with the uk, and at some point they wont have the obstacle of. They wont have the anchor around their ankle, because that is what they have. When i spoke to the Prime Minister, he said there were massive opportunities for british businesses. Well, the americans are very ambitious to get this done as fast as possible, they really want results, you know, within a year, i suppose, by next june or july. Were keen to go as fast as we can, but we want this to be a really big, thoroughgoing, comprehensive trade deal. You know that the experts say it cant be done in a year, it is going to take longer. Well, i think years and years is an exaggeration, but i think to do it all within a year is going to be tight. Ill be honest with you, my own experience of the way the americans work, and the size and complexity of the deal we want to do, probably means we wont be able to do it within a year. That doesnt mean. Five years . No, well do it faster than that. We need to do it fast, but to get the whole thing done within a year is going to be a big ask. Borisjohnson also met the president of the european council, putting behind them an argument over who would be to blame for a no deal brexit. I couldnt agree more thats the spirit. There was a time just a few weeks ago when mrjohnson said the chances of that were a million to one. So what does he think now . In the last few days, there has been a sort of dawning realisation in brussels and other european capitals that, you know, what the shape of the problem is for the uk. And i think everybody gets it by now. Its to do with that withdrawal agreement, its to do with the fact that under the current terms, wed be kept locked in the eu legal order, we would be kept locked in the trading system, without any say on those things. That cant work for a great economy and a great country like the uk. So, is no deal still a million to one . It depends very much on the willingness to cooperate and the common sense of. Have you detected more willingness . Look, im an optimist, but i do think. Its going to take more than a bit of optimism. I do think that they understand that there is an opportunity to do a deal. So, it is more likely than it was, do you think . I think its going be touch and go. A no deal brexit wont affect everyone in this room but mrjohnson admits it could be bumpy for the uk. Can you guarantee to people they will be able to get their medicines . That is certainly a guarantee that we can make. But i dont want, at this stage, to say that, you know, to say that there wont be unforeseen difficulties, because that is the. You said youre willing to contemplate it, you are willing to take the country in that direction, two months away, potentially, people watching this want to know what it is going to mean in real terms. Its entirely the right thing to do. So, the preparations that were making between now and october the 31st are, under no circumstances, going to be valueless, they need to be done anyway. Lets get them done fast and in a professional and confident way. Its been all smiles and warm words beside the sea here in the south west of france. But the Prime Minister has some testing weeks ahead. How did it go, Prime Minister . Tres bien. Vicki young, bbc news, biarritz. As talks at the g7 meeting in biarittz finish for the second day, the leaders met for a family photo, with the leaders of the g7 nations, as well as guest invitee, gathered for the photo call. Indias Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Boris Johnson today, where downing street says the leaders agreed to further strengthen our Bilateral Partnership after brexit, including by working more closely together to overcome barriers to trade and build on our economic ties. Our europe editor katya adler is in biarritz for us and explains what the eus thoughts are on the brexit deal. Eu leaders have two takeaways really when it comes to brexit and this g7 meeting. One, more positive, and the other, decidedly negative for them. Simply put eu leaders do think a no deal brexit is becoming increasingly likely. Time is simply running out unless the Prime Minister were suddenly to perform a u turn and ask for another brexit extension. Eu leaders dont believe borisjohnson has something secret up borisjohnson has something secret up his sleeve, a realistic alternative to the brexit deal and that famous backstop for the irish border and sure, the Prime Minister tells them the ball is in the eus court but eu figures tell me they see no point in watering down the backstop even if they were to consider getting rid of the backstop altogether because they see the Prime Minister doesnt have a majority in parliament that would guarantee even then the brexit deal would get through. They see instead hes focusing on domestic politics, on shoring up his premiership, on winning an election rather than reaching a compromise deal with the eu, so they tell me they are arms folded in watching and waiting mode and the mood is increasingly gloomy. Ona more and the mood is increasingly gloomy. On a more positive front at the g7 here, you leaders have seen the Prime Minister do sometimes an almost tortuous task to stand close to donald trump. They know he wants a good deal below the future post brexit with the united states, but on the other hand he hasnt turned his back on eu positions when it comes to iran or a trade deal with china and thats important. Europe needs the uk close on the world stage when it comes to geopolitics to be taken seriously by other big players like the us and russia, and that wont change, no deal brexit or not. You can find out about the comings and goings on the g7 summit and also what Boris Johnson and goings on the g7 summit and also what borisjohnson is saying about brexit in the papers at 11 30pm with one of the big stories in the papers tomorrow is the most astonishing innings in the history of test match cricket, with england heading towards a humiliating defeat that would have seen australia retain the ashes, ben stokes hit an amazing century to give england an unlikely one wicket victory. After collapsing forjust 67 runs in the first innings, this time england needed 359 to clinch the game. That looked a long way off when stokes was joined by the last manjack leach still needing 73 to win. Stokes then launched a stunning solo assault to win the game and bring the series level at 1 1. This is ben stokes in the dressing room after the match reflecting on what hes accomplished. Notice the bottle of champagne very between his feet. Im surprised he could reach it and afterwards, stokes england teammate joe root paid tribute, saying, hes a freak, hes incredible. To basically win a game on your own from that position is just amazing. And this was the reaction from some of the fans after the extraordinary finish. Weve said its the best test match weve been to ever. Phenomenal. We never thought we would win, we have won and its been absolutely fantastic. Ben stokes, i think they should knight him actually. Nailbiting, we were, like, it cant happen, its not going to happen and thenit happen, its not going to happen and then it happened and i think everyone wasjust in then it happened and i think everyone was just in shock. Brilliant. Yesterday morning we didnt think we would be coming to watch any cricket at all and to see that is incredible, ridiculous. It was ebbing away but they came back, absolutely unbelievable. Fantastic. It was great. Im highly delighted we managed to pull it off and as the game drew nearer to an end, obviously it got tighter and tighter and thanks to our man, ben stokes, and thanks to our man, ben stokes, and burns. Leach as well, who held his end up, a great day some pleased fans the cricket analyst simon hughes has been telling me he hadnt seen this coming. No, i mean, i think it was the most amazing performance. I think, you know, to try and put it into perspective, we mentioned ian botham in 1981 at headingley, that was an innings which resurrected england from following on and gave them the chance of victory, which bob willis sealed. This game, and this innings won the match. It was the last innings of the game and the percentage of runs that stokes scored with not only the last man, but with the last four men, when bairstow was out, england still needed 114 to win and stokes made 96 of those 114 runs, while three wickets fell at the other end. He had to farm a strike with the number 11, obviously not a very good player, so having to protect him and still score the runs as well. This australian bowling attack, outstanding, so i think its the best ever test innings ive ever seen and that compares with ian bothams149 at headingley, and graham gooch who also made a brilliant 100 at headingley against the west indies. Brian lara making an incredible innings to win a match against australia for the west indies. This game, and this innings is, i think, better than all of them because of the way he constructed it. He batted very slowly to start with and really wore the bowlers down. But then gradually, having to completely expand and create a different repertoire, where he was playing reverse shots and switch hits and things like that, so he married test cricket batting with t20 batting and took england home and kept the ashes alive, so a remarkable performance. So to put this into context, looking at what people were saying on social media, they are, like you, comparing him to brian lara, to ian botham, calling for a knighthood. Do you think what we have seen today is worthy of that . Or should we wait a little bit longer to see how it pans out . Yeah, i mean, ian botham was knighted not only for his contributions to the ashes, but also for his incredible work in charities for leukaemia research. But i think with stokes not only should we mention about the batting, but he also kept england in the game with the ball becausejofra archer went off with some kind of cramp on the second day and stokes took over his mantle and bowled Something Like 2a successive overs spread over two days from one end, kept his speed up of 88 miles an hour for most of that in very hot conditions and managed to wear the australian batting down so they didnt get a total that was too far out of range, and then saw england to their record ever run chase in the fourth innings. Simon hughes there. The fires burning across part of the amazon rainforest were high on the leaders agenda at the summit, with a pledge to quickly help the countries affected. Brazil is at the centre of the crisis, especially northern regions including the province of rondonia. Our correspondent will grant has been on board a greenpeace plane to see the extent of the damage there. This is an environmental destruction at its most brutal. Swathes of forest reduced to a graveyard of blackened, charred remains. The flames rage unabated, fanned by the dry weather and wind no one putting them out. The smoke at times reduces visibility to almost nothing. An acrid stench of burning hanging over the devastated landscape. Greenpeace flew over the state of rondonia to map the extent of the damage. And they blame one man for letting this situation get out of hand. The bolsonaro government is totally responsible for what is happening now, because the numbers of deforestation are increasing since the beginning of the year. So in eight months, he dismantled all the Environmental Policies that took more than ten years to build. Ignoring the politics for a moment, on an ecological level, on the human level, this isjust a very disturbing sight. Hectare after hectare of pristine amazon, the worlds lungs going up in smoke, and worse still, its taking place in a supposedly protected national park. But in brazil, you cant ignore the politics. All weekend, angry protests have been held in major brazilian cities and outside its embassies abroad. People furious at bolsonaros terrible environmental record. But president bolsonaro remains unrepentant, accusing europe of a colonialist attitude and insisting brazil has the right to open up the amazon to development. Many believe the fires are especially bad this year thanks to his message that subsistence farmers, cattlemen and major industry feel emboldened to set the forest alight. But theres some sympathy for Greater Development in the state of rondonia, where bolsonaro won over 70 of the vote. Im not against bringing International Companies here, as long as they bring jobs says this man, owner of a lumber yard in amazonas state. Its no use just pointing your finger to Say Something is wrong and not providing an alternative to people. It has always been a challenge for brazilian governments to strike a balance between using the amazon to provide a living for the millions who live there and protecting it for the common good, but president bolsonaro has opted to exploit it for mining and farming. With the dry season much worse in september and october, the fires are likely to burn for many weeks yet. Will grant, bbc news, rondonia state. The headlines on bbc news at the g7 summit in france borisjohnson says leaving the eu with a brexit deal is touch and go. tonight a show of unity after a days diplomacy. Earlier President Trump promised to deliver a very big trade deal with the uk after brexit. Batting brilliance from ben stokes leads england to a nailbiting victory over australia and keeps the ashes series alive. That dominates a sports news today. Sport, and for a full round up, from the bbc sport centre, heres connie mcgloughlin. Good evening. Against all the odds, the ashes series is very much alive. England were chasing a record 359 at headingley, but thanks to ben stokess 135 not out they achieved what at times seemed the unthinkable. Heres our Sports Correspondent andy swiss. What an astonishing win for england and an astonishing performance from ben stokes. 135 not out, one of the most breathtaking batting performances the ashes has surely ever seen. England started the day needing another 203 runs. They made decent progress but wickets tumbled after lunch and when stuart broad was the ninth man out, england needed 73 runs. It seemed their hopes were realistically over. Ben stokes ripped into the australian bowling. A spectacular performance from him, eight sixes in total. A stunning achievement. He had some luck. He was dropped at one point, australia fumbling a run out and there was an lbw appeal turned down which replays showed was hitting the stumps. Australia by that stage had used up their reviews. England rode their luck but how ben stokes deserved it as he hit the boundary that sent headingley into euphoria. This was the scene of a young both ins heroics in 1981 and this was right up there. If england had lost this match, their ashes hopes would have been over. It is level after this and after this they will believe anything is possible. Moments like that dont come along very often and you know, it was just an amazing game to be part of. To be there at the end and keep our ashes hopes alive was a pretty special feeling. On to football and the premier League Champions Manchester City maintained their unbeaten start to the new season with a win at bournemouth. Sergio aguero scored twice in a 3 1victory. Raheem sterling also scored for the champions and hes the leagues joint top scorer with 5 goals from three games. Harry wilson got a consolation goalfor bournemouth, while the win for pep guardiolas side takes them up to 2nd in the table two points behind the leaders liverpool. We have seven points. We should have nine. But its ok. Last game before the international break, and hopefully ourfans can come against brighton and help us to make another victory. Elsewhere, there was a shock in north london as newcastle won 1 0 at tottenham thanks to joe lintons first half goal. A stoppage time penalty from raul himenez earned wolves a point as they drew 1 1 with burnley. Its as you were in the scottish premiership. Celtic beat hearts 3 1 to maintain their 100 record and stay ahead of rangers who also made it three wins out of three today, Borna Barisic with the only goal at st mirren just before the hour mark. The croatian fired this stunner of a free kick as he made his return to the side. It means st mirren have now lost their last four meetings with rangers. Rory mcilroy has won the tour championship, pocketing him cool £9 million. He started the day one shot off Brooks Koepka at the top of the leaderboard, but sunk a 22 foot putt for a birdie on the seventh to put him into the lead. And he stayed in the lead from there, despite carding two bogies in a row, as the crowd gathered around the 18th green, mcilroy finished off in style with another birdie. This is the second time that the Northern Irish man has won the tournament. Thats all the sport for now. You can find more on all those stories on the bbc sport website. Thats bbc. Co. Uk sport. A 69 year old man who was stabbed to death in west london has been named as allan isichei. The grandfather was attacked after leaving a pub yesterday evening. A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Seven people, including two children, have been killed in a collision between a helicopter and a light aeroplane in majorca. Local officials said there were no survivors from the crash. Eyewitnesses said the aircraft came down close to a farmhouse near the town of inca. All major uk airports have been told to introduce new 3d baggage screening equipment before the end of 2022. Heathrow is already investing 50 Million Pounds in the technology. Ministers say it will boost security, speed up pre boarding checks, and could end the restrictions on travelling with liquids and laptops. Theres been a further escalation of violence in hong kong where a Police Officer has fired a gun during Anti Government protests. The Authorities Say his life was in danger. The protests began in response to a controversial extradition bill and now have been taking place for 12 weeks. From Hong Kong John sudworth reports. Hong kong was once celebrated for its stability. Not any more. Onlookers gazed down on the political crisis being lived out in running street battles. By nightfall, it was at times almost medieval. This rain of sticks and clubs, brought to an end only by the sound of a gunshot, as one officer draws his side arm, shooting into the air. Much of this city, it should be said, continues as normal, with the violence only in small pockets. But its intensifying. Peaceful demonstrations dont work, according to so many people, because they have 1 million march, 2 million march, and the government still doesnt listen. And therefore this leads to an escalation of force. Theres now an established pattern. Barricades are set up. There are taunts and provocations. And then the police response. Meeting violence with violence. What is extraordinary is that despite volley after volley of tear gas and rubber bullets, the protesters showed no signs of backing down. In fact theyre advancing, following the tear gas back and moving forward under the police lines. With no political solution in sight, the cycle continues. The families of Police Officers also held a rally, concerned that its their loved ones, not the government, taking the brunt of public anger. The government should do something, notjust push the police in front of the protests, let them face the protests. And i think this will never end. Calm was eventually restored, but these scenes will not go unnoticed in beijing, which has been issuing fresh warnings that the army could be sent in. John sudworth, bbc news, hong kong. Its family day at Notting Hill Carnival, which has seen record temperatures. A 72 second silence was held for the victims of the grenfell fire. Around a Million People are thought to be taking part in the long standing celebration of caribbean heritage. James waterhouse reports. Whether its feathers, skates or a bit of engine oil, thousands have been choosing their own way to party as the Notting Hill Carnival returns. Bringing people all together to come and enjoy ourselves, have fun, love our music, love our food, thats what were here for. People are free, everyones out there enjoying themselves, you know, a nice environment where you get together with different cultures. This unmistakable wall of noise and colour reminds you how this is one of the Biggest Community celebrations in the world. But the question this year for politicians more than ever is how this positivity is translated beyond these two days. Because its those same communities which have been affected by never before seen levels of violence and knife crime in the city. Also, in what is now become tradition, carnival pauses for 72 seconds. Half a mile away from the grenfell tower, its for each person who was killed two years ago in that fire. And the mingling mayor of london isnt happy with the progress made since. Families who were promised theyd be rehoused within weeks are still living in temporary accommodation more than 2. 5 years on. I worry about the delay in phase two of the inquiry beginning which means that the lessons that need to be learnt are not yet learned. Away from remembering, things kicked off with thejouvert where paint is thrown over each other. Then, as temperatures hit new heights, 32. 7 celsius to be precise, it was the turn of the childrens parade. We have lots of different bands on the road today, but all the bandleaders are friends and we all Work Together to create this magic, so its very important for us to be sending that message that its all about unity, fun, culture and vibes. 12,500 Police Officers have the job of keeping around a Million People safe. Their priority today having a good time. Temperatures have now reached a new record for the Late August Bank Holiday weekend, the met office has announced. It looks like the highest temperature recorded this afternoon was 33. 3 degrees at heathrow. Richard galpin has been in brighton and sent this update. Records have been smashed this summer records have been smashed this summer in terms of temperatures. The latest one here, for the Bank Holiday Weekend, 33. 3 celsius, that is two more than the previous record which had stood for almost 20 years. Then if you wind back to the beginning of this year, february, to be precise, there was a mini heatwave in west wales, near aberystwyth, where the temperature reached more than 20 celsius, which was unprecedented for february. Coming into the summer, again, we have had the hottestjuly day on record, with the temperature reaching more than 38 celsius. Certainly, we have been speaking to some people here, and they have been saying, yes, this is great, were having a lovely time, we are enjoying being in the sun in late august, but at the same time, saying that yes, they are concerned that all this may be linked to climate change. Now its time for a look at the weather with ben rich. Predictions of what more is to come for this heatwave and is there going to be any relief . Things are going to be any relief . Things are going to turn cooler as we had to this week but is going to be quite a slow process and quite a few places, especially the further east you are. As you just had we had a temperature of 33. 3 degreesjust as you just had we had a temperature of 33. 3 degrees just to the west of london. The hottest theyd august Bank Holiday Weekend on record. That he has been wafting up from the near continent around an area of high pressure. It was not everyday, western errors recall the because the air has been coming from the atla ntic the air has been coming from the atlantic and gradually, we will see that atlanticare cooler as it is making more in rows eastwards. Behind this for the front will have some psychical they are, this more significant frontal system will bring a big cool down for all of us. So you can sum it up like this, the temperature is gradually heading downwards over the next few days, but with that change was his brain and perhaps thunderstorms for a time. As we go through tonight, missed and fog could start to be quite problematic across the western half of the uk, Poor Visibility through wales, the west midlands, sapper scott and, otherwise some clear spells and temperatures of 12 16 degrees. It is a bank holiday for most of us tomorrow but if you are travelling early through wales, the midlands, north west england, sapper scotland, bear in mind the low cloud mist and fog could make some troublesome conditions. Much of the clear, and its another day of warmth and sunshine. But with the chance of a shower in the far south west and generally a cooler feel for the western and northern parts of the uk. Certainly a cooler day in scotland, 21 degrees in glasgow. Well up into the 30s in andrea east anglia and the south east, more hot sunshine on tuesday, but increased chance
