Sitting down over breakfast, donald trump said britains departure from the eu would be liberating. Were having very good trade talks between the uk and ourselves. Were going to do a very big trade deal, bigger than weve ever had with the uk, and at some point they wont have the obstacle of. They wont have the anchor around their ankle, because that is what they have. When i spoke to the Prime Minister, he said there were massive opportunities for british businesses. Well, the americans are very ambitious to get this done as fast as possible, they really want results, you know, within a year, i suppose, by next june or july. Were keen to go as fast as we can, but we want this to be a really big, thoroughgoing, comprehensive trade deal. You know that the experts say it cant be done in a year, it is going to take longer. Well, i think years and years is an exaggeration, but i think to do it all within a year is going to be tight. Ill be honest with you, my own experience of the way the americans work, and the size and complexity of the deal we want to do, probably means we wont be able to do it within a year. That doesnt mean. Five years . No, well do it faster than that. We need to do it fast, but to get the whole thing done within a year is going to be a big ask. Borisjohnson also met the president of the european council, putting behind them an argument over who would be to blame for a no deal brexit. I couldnt agree more thats the spirit. There was a time just a few weeks ago when mrjohnson said the chances of that were a million to one. So what does he think now . In the last few days, there has been a sort of dawning realisation in brussels and other european capitals that, you know, what the shape of the problem is for the uk. And i think everybody gets it by now. Its to do with that withdrawal agreement, its to do with the fact that under the current terms, wed be kept locked in the eu legal order, we would be kept locked in the trading system, without any say on those things. That cant work for a great economy and a great country like the uk. So, is no deal still a million to one . You said it repeatedly. It depends very much on the willingness to cooperate and the common sense of. Have you detected more willingness . Look, im an optimist, but i do think. Its going to take more than a bit of optimism. I do think that they understand that there is an opportunity to do a deal. So, it is more likely than it was, do you think . I think its going be touch and go. A no deal brexit wont affect everyone in this room but mrjohnson admits it could be bumpy for the uk. Can you guarantee to people they will be able to get their medicines . That is certainly a guarantee that we can make. But i dont want, at this stage, to say that, you know, there wont be unforeseen difficulties, because that is the. You said youre willing to contemplate it, you are willing to take the country in that direction, two months away, potentially, people watching this want to know what it is going to mean in real terms. Its entirely the right thing to do. So, the preparations that were making between now and october the 31st are under no circumstances going to be valueless, they need to be done anyway. Lets get them done fast and in a professional and confident way. Its been all smiles and warm words beside the sea here in the south west of france. Its going to take time and its going to be tough going. What was interesting today was that when the Prime Minister met the president made they had warm words, they showered each other with compliments, they are the new best friends, so to speak but what was really interesting was that the Prime Minister chose very specifically and publicly during the breakfast they had to push back against the president on two things. One was to say look, if theres going to be a trade deal, you, the us are going to have to open up orders and deregulate to allow british businesses to get in. He went through and named some of them. The president looks likely, you know, stimied. And also the Prime Minister made it very, very clear to the president that the uk does not support the us trade war with china because of the impact its having on britain and other economies around the world. That was really interesting. The Prime Minister, mrjohnson was beginning to calibrate his relationship with the us president. Its warm, its friendly but hes giving himself a little bit of cover so that if in a future election he were to be accused by his political opponents of cosying up to mr trump, too close, being dependent and needy, dare i say it, he has some defence and he says it is a carefully calibrated relationship. As talks at the g7 meeting in biarittz finish for the second day, the leaders met for a family photo with the leaders of the g7 nations, as well as guest invitees gathered for the photo call. It was the last innings of the game and the percentage of runs that stokes scored with not only the last man, but with the last four men, when bairstow was out, england still needed 114 to win and stokes made 96 of those 114 runs, while three wickets fell at the other end. He had to farm a strike with the number 11, obviously not a very good player, so having to protect him and still score the runs as well. The australian bowling attack was outstanding, so i think its the best ever test innings ive ever seen and that compares with ian bothams 149 at headingley, and graham gooch who also made a brilliant 100 at headingley against the west indies. Brian lara making an incredible innings to win a match against australia for the west indies. This game, and this innings is, i think, better than all of them because of the way he constructed it. He batted very slowly to start with and really wore the bowlers down. But then gradually, having to completely expand and create a different repertoire, where he was playing reverse shots and switch hits and things like that, so he married test cricket batting with t20 batting and took england home and kept the ashes alive, so a remarkable performance. So to put this into context, looking at what people were saying on social media, they are, like you, comparing him to brian lara, to ian botham, calling for a knighthood. Heathrow airport is to install 3d baggage scanners in all terminals, meaning passengers may not have to remove liquids and laptops from their luggage during security screening. It was the first in the country to trial the technology. Today, the government announced all major uk airports must introduce the equipment within the next three and a half years. Alison earle reports. Its something those travelling by plane are now used to. Clear plastic bags for your small liquids when you go through security, our laptops are put in a different tray. The restrictions were introduced 13 years ago after terror threats but new technology has led airports in some countries including america to take a different approach. This is a new development, these protesters, instead of waiting for the police to come and clear them out, they are moving their barricades towards the police. It is obviously a clear provocation. The police have been firing tear gas and you can see the projectile coming back across the barricades from the protesters. It seems we are back to the situation of a few weeks ago with protesters and police having a pitched battle here. Perhaps the police dont have enough numbers yet to clear this many protesters away. More molotov cocktails are also being thrown. The protesters move forward again and then they back away together as the police are firing their non lethal rounds back at them. Every now and then we see something on fire over the other side and molotov cocktails going off on the street. Protesters are certainly upping the ante in terms of the weapons they are using against the police. This is despite the warning, despite the warning they have had that the police will come in with some force and clear this area. I have not seen as many petrol bombs thrown in the whole campaign as we have seen today. Now we can see why the police were holding off. They were waiting to bring in their new piece of gear.
