And then it did and we were, like, everyone was just in shock. And then it did and we were, like, everyone wasjust in shock. 40,000 troops begin a major operation to fight fires in the amazon. Its the hottest august Bank Holiday Weekend on record, with the top temperature reaching 33. 3 degrees in west london. And coming up in half an hour, sportsday will have more on englands thrilling comeback at headingley. Good evening. Borisjohnson has told the bbc that whether the uk leaves the eu with a deal at the end of october is now touch and go. The Prime Minister was speaking at the g7 summit in france, where hes also said no deal would mean the uk keeping a substa ntial part of the £39 billion the uk had agreed to pay the eu. Hes also been meeting President Trump for the First Time Since becoming Prime Minister, as our chief Political Correspondent vicki young reports from biarritz. Side by side, but not quite in step. Borisjohnson hopes his american friend will help him out and boost trade between their two countries. But is this a partnership of equals or will the uk get trampled all over by its mighty ally . Do you know who this is, hes going to be a fantastic Prime Minister. And we are going to do a fantastic deal. Once we clear up some of the obstacles in our path. Sitting down over breakfast, donald trump said britains departure from the eu would be liberating. Were having very good trade talks between the uk and ourselves. Were going to do a very big trade deal, bigger than weve ever had with the uk, and at some point they wont have the obstacle of. They wont have the anchor around their ankle, because that is what they have. When i spoke to the Prime Minister, he said there were massive opportunities for British Businesses. Well, the americans are very ambitious to get this done as fast as possible, they really want results, you know, within a year, i suppose, by next june or july. Were keen to go as fast as we can, but we want this to be a really big, thoroughgoing, comprehensive trade deal. You know that the experts say it cant be done in a year, it is going to take longer. Well, i think years and years is an exaggeration, but i think to do it all within a year is going to be tight. Ill be honest with you, my own experience of the way the americans work, and the size and complexity of the deal we want to do, probably means we wont be able to do it within a year. That doesnt mean. Five years . No, well do it faster than that. We need to do it fast, but to get the whole thing done within a year is going to be a big ask. Borisjohnson also met the president of the european, the president of the european council, putting behind them an argument over who would be to blame for a no deal brexit. I couldnt agree more thats the spirit. There was a time just a few weeks ago when mrjohnson said the chances of that were a million to one. So what does he think now . In the last few days, there has been a sort of dawning realisation in brussels and other european capitals that, you know, what the shape of the problem is for the uk. And i think everybody gets it by now. Its to do with that withdrawal agreement, its to do with the fact that under the current terms, wed be kept locked in the eu legal order, we would be kept locked in the trading system, without any say on those things. That cant work for a great economy and a great country like the uk. So, is no deal still a million to one, you said it repeatedly . It depends very much on the willingness to cooperate and the common sense of. Have you detected more willingness . Look, im an optimist, but i do think. Its going to take more than a bit of optimism. I do think that they understand that there is an opportunity to do a deal. So, it is more likely than it was, do you think . I think its going be touch and go. A no deal brexit wont affect everyone in this room but mrjohnson admits it could be bumpy for the uk. Can you guarantee to people they will be able to get their medicines . That is certainly a guarantee that we can make. But i dont want, at this stage, to say that, you know, there wont be unforeseen difficulties, because that is the. You said youre willing to contemplate it, you are willing to take the country in that direction, two months away, potentially, people watching this want to know what it is going to mean in real terms. Its entirely the right thing to do. So, the preparations that were making between now and october the 31st are under no circumstances going to be valueless, they need to be done anyway. Lets get them done fast and in a professional and confident way. Its been all smiles and warm words beside the sea here in the south west of france. But the Prime Minister has some testing weeks ahead. How did it go, Prime Minister . Tres bien. Vicki young, bbc news, biarritz. Irans foreign minister has made an unexpected visit to the g7 summit in a diplomatic attempt by france to de escalate tensions in the gulf. Javid zarif met president macron and his french counterpart and briefed uk and german officials. Our diplomatic correspondent, James Landale is in biarritz and joins us now. We would like to talk about iran and the surprise visit for many of the leaders there in a moment but first, lets talk about the eyeball to eye ball lets talk about the eyeball to eyeball meeting between Boris Johnson and President Trump, a very important uk trade deal, particularly important post brexit, but how much was actually achieved in the meetings . Is it there a lot more going on behind the scenes that we never see or more going on behind the scenes that we never see oi hear more going on behind the scenes that we never see or hear about . Isnt there. Lets be frank, any trade deal between the uk and the us after brexit is going to take some time. Borisjohnson was very clear it would take at least a year. His timeframe was more than a year, less than five years. It is going to take time. It is going to be tough going. What was interesting today is that when the Prime Minister met the president , they had all of the warm words and they showered each other with compliments and they are the new best friends on the diplomatic block, so to speak, but what was really interesting was that the Prime Minister chose very specifically and publicly, during the public part of the breakfast they had, to push back against the president on two things. One was to say if there is going to be a trade deal, the us would have to open up their borders and deregulate to allow British Business to get in. He went through and name some of them. The president looks likely stymied by this. Also, the Prime Minister made it very clear to the president that the uk does not oppose, does not support, rather, the us trade war with china because of the impact it is having on britain and other economies around the world. I thought that was really interesting that the Prime Minister, mrjohnson, was beginning to calibrate his relationship with the us president. It is warm and friendly but he is giving himself a bit of cover so that if in a future election he were to be accused by his political opponents of cosying up to mr trump and being too close or being dependent and needy, dare i say, he has some defence now. It is a carefully calibrated relationship, he has shown that. We have got to leave it there because you have got to speak to some other colleagues but we hope to speak to you again a bit later. Many thanks, James Landale, there. And well find out how this story and many others are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10 30 and 11 30 this evening in the papers. Our guestsjoining me tonight are the political commentatorjo phillips, and the Political Editor of the sunday mirror and sunday people, nigel nelson. Join us then. The fires raging across part of the amazon rainforest have been high on the agenda of the summit, where president macron said g7 leaders had agreed to help the countries affected as fast as possible. Most of the worst affected areas are in northern brazil, where our correspondent will grant has been on board a greenpeace plane to see the extent of the damage. This is environmental destruction at its most brutal. Swathes of forest reduced to a graveyard of blackened, charred remains. The flames rage unabated, fanned by the dry weather and wind. No one putting them out. The smoke at times reduces visibility to almost nothing. An acrid stench of burning hanging over the devastated landscape. Greenpeace flew over the state of rondonia to map the extent of the damage. And they blame one man for letting the situation get out of hand. Bolsonaro government is totally responsible for what has happened now because the numbers of deforestation are increasing since the beginning of the year. So in eight months, he has dismantled all Environmental Policies that it took more than ten years to build. Ignoring the politics for a moment, on an ecological level, on a human level, this is a very disturbing sight. Hectare after hectare of pristine amazon, the worlds lungs, going up in smoke, and worse still, it is taking place in a supposedly protected national park. But in brazil, you cant ignore the politics. All weekend, angry protests have been held in major brazilian cities and outside its embassies abroad, people furious at bolsonaros terrible environmental record. But the president remains unrepentant, accusing europe of a colonialist attitude and insisting brazil has the right to open up the amazon to development. Many believe the fires are especially bad this year thanks to his message. That subsistence farmers, cattlemen and major industry feel emboldened to set the forest alight. But there is some sympathy for Greater Development in the state of rondonia, where the president won over 70 of the vote. Translation im not against bringing International Companies here as long as they bring jobs. Edson is the owner of a lumber yard in the state. It is always been a challenge for brazilian governments to find a balance in the amazon but the president has opted to exploit it for mining and farming. With the dry season to get much worse by october, these fires may burn for many weeks yet. Will grant, bbc news. Now to a big breaking sports story. It was one of the most astonishing innings in the history of test match cricket. With england heading towards a humiliating defeat which would have seen australia retain the ashes, ben stokes hit an amazing centiry to give england an unlikely one wicket victory. After collapsing forjust 67 runs in the first innings, this time england needed 359 to clinch the game. That looked a long way off when stokes was joined by the last man, jack leach, still needing 73 to win. Stokes then launched a stunning solo assault to win the game and bring the series level at 1 1. This is ben stokes in the dressing room, after the match, reflecting on what hes accomplished. Notice the big bottle of champagne and afterwards stokes england team mate, joe root paid tribute, saying hes a freak, hes incredible. To basically win a game on your own from that position is just amazing. And this was the reaction from some of the fans after the extraordinary finish. Well, wevejust said its the best test match ever. Phenomenal. We never thought wed. Day four and we have won and it has been utterly fantastic. Ben stokes, they should knight him, actually. Nail biting, we were, like, oh, my god, this isnt going to happen, it cant happen, and then we were like. I think everyone was just in shock. It was brilliant. Superb. Yesterday morning we didnt think we would be coming to watch any cricket at all and to see that is incredible, ridiculous. I thought it was ebbing away but they came back. Absolutely unbelievable. Fantastic. It was great. Highly delighted that we managed to pull it off. As the game drew nearer to an end, it got tighter and tighter. And thanks to that man ben stokes, and jack leach as well, who held his end up, a great day. We can speak to our sports correspondent, andy swiss, whos at headingley. Im sure the match will go down in the sporting history books but try to put it into context for us, particularly for the non cricket fans. Explain to us how big a deal this is. It was quite extraordinary, because what happened was, england we re because what happened was, england were set a big target to win, needing another 203 at the start of the day which is a lot in cricketing terms. They did ok this morning but then the wickets started tumbling. By then the wickets started tumbling. By the time the last man came out, jack leach, england still needed 73, which is a huge amount of runs when you have got your, on paper, worst batsman at the crease. At that point, ben stokes simply grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and started clobbering sixes all over the place. It was quite spectacular stuff. He hit eight sixes in total and rode his luck along the way a bit. Australia had some chances. They dropped a catch and fumble they run out which they should have taken. But for one man to win a match pretty much on his own, which was what ben stokes did, is something you very rarely see in test cricket. Headingley, of course, has seen a few ashes miracles over the years, people might remember ian bothams heroics back in 1981 where he saved england from another seemingly hopeless position. This was really right up there. Had england lost this game, their chances of winning back the ashes would have been over. As it stands, the series is 1 1 with two to play. After this, england will surely believe that anything is possible. After this, england will surely believe that anything is possiblelj was just believe that anything is possiblelj wasjust going to believe that anything is possiblelj was just going to say, what now . They will keep the momentum going, i suppose but they have got the support of the fan base now more than ever. Absolutely, the fans here we re than ever. Absolutely, the fans here were going absolutely berserk. The noise was simply deafening inside headingley. I think a lot had come hoping rather than believing that england could get the win. I think they were expecting to see australia retaining the ashes. But things have now completely changed. It is 1 1 with two matches left, the next one is in manchester in a couple of weeks. England will now have a spring in their step and australia will be simply devastated to have lost a match really from the brink of victory, that is what happened today, england won a game which they never should have had that chance in. For australia, it never should have had that chance in. Foraustralia, it will never should have had that chance in. For australia, it will be hard to come back. Andy swiss, there in oui to come back. Andy swiss, there in our sports correspondent, lucky enough to be at headingley today, to witness and report on that. We can speak to the cricket analyst, simon hughes. Im sure you enjoyed the match, but did you see it coming . Not at all, no. I think it was the most amazing performance. To try to put it into perspective, we mentioned ian botham in 1981 at headingley, that was an innings which resurrected england from following on and gave them the chance of victory, which bob willis sealed. This game and this innings, it won the match, it was the last innings of the game, and the percentage of runs that ben stokes scored with not only the last man but the last four then, when jonny ba i rstow but the last four then, when Jonny Bairstow was at eight england still needed 114 to win and stokes made 96 of those remaining runs, while three wickets fell at the other end. He had to farm the strike with the numberii, had to farm the strike with the number 11, not had to farm the strike with the numberii, nota had to farm the strike with the number 11, not a very good player, so number 11, not a very good player, so having to protect him and still score runs as well. This australian bowling attack is outstanding. I think it is the best ever test innings ive ever seen and compares within both ins 149 innings ive ever seen and compares within both ins149 at headingley and Graham Goochs brilliant century at headingley against the west indies, brian laras incredible innings to win a match against australia for the west indies. This game and this innings is, i think, better than all of them. Because of the way he constructed it. He batted very slowly to start with and really w0 re very slowly to start with and really wore the bowlers down but gradually, having to completely expand and create a different repertoire, where he was playing reverse shots and switch hits and things like that, he married up test cricket batting with t20 batting and took england home and kept the ashes alive. A remarkable performance. Put this into context, looking at what people are saying on social media, like you, they are comparing him to brian lara, ian botham, calling for a knighthood. Do you think what we have seen today is worthy of that . Shouldnt we wait a bit longer to see how it pans out . Of course, ian botham has got a knighthood and was not only knighted for his contribution to cricket but also for his incredible work in charities for leukaemia research. Buti his incredible work in charities for leukaemia research. But i think with ben stokes, not only should we mention about the batting, but he also kept england in the game with the ball becausejofra archer went off with some kind of cramp on the second day and ben stokes took over his mantle and bowled Something Like 24 successive overs, spread over two days, from one end, kept up a speed of 88 mph for most of that in very hot conditions, and manage to wear down the australian batting so they did not get a total that was too far out of range and then he saw england to their record ever run chase in the fourth innings. What does this mean for england cricket . Did it need a boost . We are doing pretty well . I dont think it needed a boost because clearly the world cup has set the summer alight but in many ways, this exceeded the world cup because it was so unlikely that england could pull it off. It keeps the ashes alive and it means it keeps the spectre of football away from cricket for a little longer and also, it reminds people that although the world cup was fantastic with the white ball and the limited overs format, that test match cricket is the ultimate format. Simon, really good to talk to you. You can go and celebrate now. Thank you forjoining us. The headlines on bbc news. Borisjohnson says the chances of a brexit deal are touch and go ahead of his meeting with the Eu Council President at the g7 summit. President trump says a very big trade deal after brexit is on the menu as he holds a working breakfast with the Prime Minister. Batting brilliance from ben stokes leads england to a nail biting victory over australia and keeps the ashes series alive. All that batting was done in very high temperatures. Temperatures have now reached a new record for the late august Bank Holiday Weekend, the met office has announced. Provisionally, it looks like the highest temperature recorded this afternoon was 33. 3 degrees at heathrow. Well, we can speak now to our correspondent, richard galpin, whojoins us from a very hot and sunny brighton. So the summer so the summer seems so the summer seems to be breaking records left, right and centre, and i suppose that is why many people made the dash to the beach in the south east of england. Made the dash to the beach in the southeast of england. Yes, that is absolutely right. Certainly people in brighton and in many other areas are obviously loving this weather, it has been fantastic in brighton all day. People have moved away a bit now, going for their dinner and drinks and things. But the beach has been absolutely packed. Absolutely as you say, records has been smashed this summer in terms of temperatures. The latest one here, for the Bank Holiday Weekend, 33. 3 celsius, that is two more than the previous record which had stood for almost 20 years. Then if you wind back to the beginning of this year, february, to be precise, there was a mini heatwave in west wales, near aberystwyth, where the temperature reached more than 20 celsius, which was unprecedented for february. Coming into the summer, again, we have had the hottestjuly day on record, with the temperature reaching more than 38 celsius. Certainly, we have been speaking to some people here, and they have been saying, yes, this is great, were having a lovely time, we are enjoying being in the sun in late august, but at the same time, saying that yes, they are concerned that all this may be linked to climate change. Richard, indeed, it is not all something to salivate. Much more on the bbc news website on those record temperatures. Seven people, including two children, have died after a mid air collision between a helicopter and a plane in mallorca, according to authorities there. The accident happened in the inca region of the spanish island. Emergency services are attending the scene. These are the latest pictures to come from the area. We will keep you updated. Lebanon has condemned israeli aggression, after two drones targeted the beirut stronghold of hezbollah. New 3d baggage scanners will be introduced at all major airports in the uk by 2022, under government plans announced today. Ministers say the technology will cut queues, boost security and will mean passengers will no longer have to remove laptops and liquids from their luggage as its screened. Our Business Correspondent katy austin has more. A familiar sight to air travellers clear plastic bags to put your small liquids in while you go through airport security. Laptops must be put in a separate tray. Airports in some countries, particularly america, are already starting to use new, high tech scanners for hand luggage. Heathrow in london is investing £50 million in similar equipment. They say it could remove the need for liquids and electricals to be taken out. It will be much quicker. It will be less disruptive not having to take things out of their bags and they will be able to get on their way much more quickly. But it will also give more security and that is really important to passengers. Now, all major uk airports are being told they must have advanced 3d scanners by 2022. It is very important we are using the best, world leading technology. We will have the best in the world once this is rolled out, thanks to this announcement. One travel expert says passengers will notice a difference. Imagine this you are at security, you have forgotten to take out all your stuff, so that means your bag full of liquids. Then you have your computer, and maybe a telephone is in there and you have to take it all out and put each one in a separate tray. All of that takes time. Even though we say to ourselves, im ready, by the time we get to security, we realise or most of us do that we are not ready and there is a lot of faffing that takes place. Heathrow believes the new technology could make going through security up to 60 times faster. Airport operators say introducing it could be a challenge for smaller airports. Katy austin, bbc news. The uks only active fracking site has experienced its second earthquake in a week. The tremor last night was the largest recorded at the lancashire site, measuring 2. 1 on the richter scale. The previous record was 1. 5, set on wednesday. Energy Firm Cuadrilla say last nights tremor lasted around a second and happened at 11 oclock, while fracking was not taking place. Riot police have fired tear gas and baton charged protesters in hong kong. The latest clashes come as the protests enter their 12th week. They began in response to a controversial extradition bill but have since grown into broader Anti Government demonstrations. Our correspondent Stephen Mcdonell has sent this report from where some of the worst clashes have been happening. This is a new development, these protesters, instead of waiting for the police to come and clear them out, they are moving their barricades towards the police. It is obviously a clear provocation. The police have been firing tear gas and you can see the projectiles coming back across the barricades from the protesters. It seems we are back to the situation of a few weeks ago with protesters and police having a pitched battle here. Perhaps the police dont have enough numbers yet to clear this many protesters away. More molotov cocktails are also being thrown. The protesters move forward again and then they back away together as the police are firing their non lethal rounds back at them. Every now and then we see something on fire over the other side and molotov cocktails going off on the street. Protesters are certainly upping the ante in terms of the weapons they are using against the police. This is despite the warning, despite the warning they have had that the police will come in with some force and clear this area. I have not seen as many petrol bombs thrown in the whole campaign as we have seen today. Now we can see why the police were holding off. They were waiting to bring in their new piece of gear. These are the water cannon trucks, which the Hong Kong Police have been threatening to use. As soon as the trucks came, i can tell you, the protesters who had been digging in, building barricades, fighting with the police, they scarpered very quickly. And possibly this is one of the reasons why this has now been brought forward because i think the protesters realise they cant withstand the force that would come from the water cannon on these trucks. Its the Notting Hill Carnival in west london this long Bank Holiday Weekend and over a Million People are expected to attend the long standing celebration of caribbean heritage. Earlier this afternoon a 72 second silence was held to remember those who died in the fire at grenfell tower. Carnival, we will now hold a 72 second silence for grenfell, beginning now. The tower is just half an hour from the parade route, with a similar silence taking place last year. Something that really affected the community, there. Lets find out more about the record breaking temperatures with ben roach. Good evening, under sunny skies, attempt is getting up to 33 degrees today but western parts of the uk we re today but western parts of the uk were a bit cooler, partly because of the extra cloud you can see other satellite, some areas of sea fog and mist as well and actually, theyre cloudy, murky weather will become more widespread across the western half of the uk as we go on through tonight. Further east, we hold on to some clear skies with temperatures between 12 and 16. If you are travelling early in the morning through wales, the midlands, north west england, south west scotland, it could be very murky indeed for some places, some quite travelling conditions. Otherwise, plenty of sunshine and a cooler day across the north and west of the uk. Towards eastern england, though, we could once again get up into the low 30s celsius. It cools off for all of us slowly as we head through the coming week and we will see some outbreaks of rain at times
