Lets begin with the trade war, because the us has announced thatis war, because the us has announced that is delaying imposing new ta riffs that is delaying imposing new tariffs on some chinese airports until the middle of december. This is sending shares in early trade into positive territory, with the niqab by1. 1 , and into positive territory, with the niqab by 1. 1 , and the all ordinaries higher by 0. 4 . Nikkei up ordinaries higher by 0. 4 . Nikkei up by ordinaries higher by 0. 4 . Nikkei up by1. 1 . A range of Popular Consumer items will be affected. Cellphones, la pto ps, will be affected. Cellphones, laptops, toys, shoes and clothing. Other products will be taken of the list based on health, safety, National Security and other factors, according to the office of the us trade representative. The delay will affect around 160 billion worth of imports. Tariffs on a further 112 billion of imports take effect on december one as scheduled. President trump had ordered tariffs on an additional 312 billion worth of imports this month after he was frustrated in the talks between china and the us. Reading between the lines, it seems the administration got spooked by the threat of a crashing stock market and higher Christmas Shopping prices. Wall street unsurprisingly welcomed the news, companies that saw a big welcomed the news, companies that sawa bigjump welcomed the news, companies that saw a big jump in their share prices include apple, hasbro and the gap. But there is some talk that there may be less incentive now to compromise in the talks. And, we will later get data on retail sales and infrastructure investment. Earlier, i asked an economist what she was expecting from the numbers. We already know that there are trillions of Infrastructure Projects thatis trillions of Infrastructure Projects that is being financed by local government bonds, and that infrastructure has already reflected in the investment growth, so the next one will be along the line, the next one will be along the line, the next growth should be in Industrial Production. I expect Industrial Production. I expect Industrial Production to edge up to 6. 5 , and i also expect retail sales to be at 9. 5 . What about this also expect retail sales to be at 9. 596. What about this month and going forward, with President Trump just announcing a delay in the implementation of tariffs on chinese goods until mid december, and of course the devaluation of the one against the us dollar. Could this boost numbers in the coming months . First of all, the devaluation of the yuanis first of all, the devaluation of the yuan is only 2 . That means the difference will be negligible in terms of their profits. Then, for the delay of the tariffs, it is good for both sides. Both china and the us, because us consumers have to bear some of the cost of the tariffs. Protesters have occupied hong kongs main airport for a second day, resulting in hundreds of flights being cancelled. It has become the focal point of pro democracy demonstrations that have been taking place for more than two months. For more details i am joined by mariko oi. If you take a look at the pictures over the last few days of the international airport, it is looking ugly. Indeed. We saw more violent clashes between protesters and police overnight, which is really worrying authorities. Lets crunch some numbers. Last year, 75 million passengers used hong kong airport for over 400,000 takeoffs and landings. More than 120 airlines go through the airport, to and from over 220 destinations. Flight bookings have fallen by 20 , and the Flagship Airline has fallen to its lowest point in more than a decade. Remember, carrie lam originally said that remember, the airline said it supported peoples right to protest, but it has fired several staff who travelled from the mainland tojoin staff who travelled from the mainland to join the protests. As mariko oi was just telling us, these are indeed Uncertain Times for these are indeed Uncertain Times for the territory. A major landmark in the territory. A major landmark in the citys financial district is the Mandarin Oriental hotel. How has this impacted on their business . That is a question our reporter put to the chief executive. There have been disturbances, and they are well covered in the media. The impact on business and the community in terms ofa business and the community in terms of a day to day basis has been limited, so the hotel has been impacted by disturbances within the neighbourhood. The longterm impact is something many businesses are concerned about . Inevitably, civil disturbances cause concern, and from oui disturbances cause concern, and from our point of view hong kong is a commercial destination and the rule of law is very important. I continue to have full confidence in those things but the longer there are disturbances and disquiet, the more questions it potentially raises. So there is a concern, but at the moment we remain confident in the future of hong kong. How much has a us china trade war impacted business, and travel and business itself, are you seeing a pinch at this point . I dont think so. It is a lwa ys this point . I dont think so. It is always difficult to isolate features that drive movements, but while there may be influences in areas, i dont think it has directly impacted the demand of our properties. Dont think it has directly impacted the demand of our propertiesm that something you are taking into consideration . I would put a different perspective on it. I think the demand for international and Tourism Travel is growing and continuing to grow strongly with demand from china, india, and other markets, for International Travel it is great. From the luxury end of the market i would expect to see continuing strong growth in the demand for hospitality. There is a trade war between the us and india, where tensions remain high. Indian farmers must decide whether they absorb higher costs or risk losing indian customers. Indians have developed a taste for almonds. With the us and india announcing tariffs as part of a tit for tat trade war, these almonds could become part of that. One characteristic of this trade war is that suppliers are absorbing the costs. But that might not be sustainable for long, so will consumers be willing to pay a higher price . Translation i wont be able to buy it if the price increases. 80 of the worlds almonds come from california. This man farms on the same land his grandparents did. But the trade war is casting a shadow over his industry. It is difficult to know exactly what will happen, but it could cause less product to be shipped into india and maybe displaced into another market. Usually it has a price consequence of. Finding the markets might not be so easy. Almond farmers are already feeling the pain of the market in china. Leaders from both countries have said they wanted a deal, but so far talks havent eased the tension. With tariffs pressuring farmers to choose between losing a key market 01 choose between losing a key market or increasing their prices, they are likely to keep feeling the effects of the trade war. She cautions her cabinet colleagues about a rumoured plan to set an election date so parliament is not sitting until after we leave the eu. I will play my part in cabinet and privately with the Prime Minister and ministers, in arguing strongly for respecting parliamentary sovereignty. I am a member of parliament, the Prime Minister and cabinet members are members of parliament. We need to remember where our Authority Comes from. But an offer of enthusiastic support if the country goes for no deal brexit from the president s adviser john bolton, and he said the car industry could be implemented as soon as november.
