To help find her. More than a Million People are evacuated from their homes as a powerful typhoon hits chinas east coast. And in half an hour here on bbc news protecting our planet explores how best we can take care of our environment. Good evening. The billionaire businessman and convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein, has died in prison in new york. Hes believed to have taken his own life. Epstein once counted among his friends bill clinton, donald trump and prince andrew, and was charged last month with trafficking dozens of underage girls for sex. He was due to stand trial next year. From new york, our correspondent, nada tawfik reports. Jeffrey epsteins extravagant lifestyle saw him party with us president donald trump. Once a mans teacher in manhattan, the finance youre accumulated a fortune that gained him access into high society. Once Close Friends with in santry, he hosted a vacation with but that mask his accusers crimes. He sexually assaulted young girls who he had to give him and other wealthy meant massages. He avoided federal charges in 2008 and a widely criticised plea deal that is under investigation by the department of justice. He was arrested again this july and charge and you work sex trafficking, he was injail awaiting trial. Epstein was found unresponsive on the floor of his prison cell in manhattan earlier this morning, many question of how he could have taken his own life and the fbi is investigating. Just over two weeks ago he was found semiconscious and crying with injuries around his neck. His victims said he would have preferred to have lived herface his victims said he would have preferred to have lived her face his charges. Our washington correspondent, chris buckler, has also been following this. He says theres shock amongst epsteins alleged victims. Some of the lawyers have said that as far as theyre concerned, the truth needs to come out about what happened at his parties, whatever he was alleged in procuring and, recurring underage girls for sex and trying to force them into having sex with prominent individuals. They say they are going to push ahead with civil cases and theyre going to do their best to get what they described as the truth out there but there is a deal of political fallout. Jeffrey epstein was an individual who was so well connected, he knew the great and the good and he held parties for the rich and famous, including donald trump, he was pictured with a number of occasions. Indeed, at one stage President Trump described him as a great guy who liked beautiful women like him but he did say that epstein like him but he did say that epstein like some women a little younger than others. But as a comment that has come back to haunt President Trump although in recent days he has been doing his best to distance himself from those comments and Jeffrey Epstein. As many others have as well. We have already had some Court Filings from a related but separate civil case that is taking place and in those, a number of prominent individuals are mentioned, there is a mention of the duke of york, prince andrew, in which there is the suggestion that he groped someone is the suggestion that he groped someone and that has been firmly denied by Buckingham Palace who say this is categorically untrue but you do get the sense that this is not going to die down withJeffrey Epsteins death but there is this point to be an attempt to push this strongly as part of a response to that case a decade ago when he made a plea deal that saw him serving just over one year in jail. It seems the detectives are investing cases that involve Something Like 36 alleged underage girls. Chris buckler reporting. Tim malloy has co written a book aboutJeffrey Epstein its called filthy rich a powerful billionaire, the sex scandal that undid him, and all thejustice that money can buy the shocking true story ofJeffrey Epstein. Hes outsideJeffrey Epsteins palm beach house for us now. Thank you forjoining us. In the course of the book you will have looked closely at the life of this man, what do you make of him . What i made of him was a man who is entitled, spoiled and he lived a lavish lifestyle. He was behind these hedges a lot and in general a terrible person who has finally met justice a day at his own hands. And a lot of questions are being asked about how a man can take its own life within a prison in that way . The latest news on that, take it for what it is, as he was taken off suicide watch and two days later he was dead. You must take a hard look at that, the attorney general will launch an investigation with the fbi so launch an investigation with the fbi so this is a strange story with a very weird and. Some people are starting with conspiracy theories that this was a man who knew too much, who had friends who might have been implicated with him and to some people wanted to see gone . been implicated with him and to some people wanted to see gone . A lot of people wanted to see gone . A lot of people would like to have seen him gone, people wanted him alive to hear him testify and cut a deal and implicate some top americans and foreign leaders as well and they will not have that. You could make a decent argument for conspiracy. I dont think you are. But we will ta ke dont think you are. But we will take a hard look at this because they should not have happened. Take a hard look at this because they should not have happenedm terms of other things that should not have happened, people are raising questions about the treatment he received earlier on in his life when he faced other prosecutions and he was convicted but seem to have a rather cushy deal . He got the greatest deal of all time. 13 months in a minimum security prison and he got to go home to the saiss every day. He had his own food cooked by a chef and had to spend the night in stockade but for us, it might have been a0 yea rs. But for us, it might have been a0 years. What is your feeling about how this man managed to get such a deal that saw him not punished in the way others might have been . Hugely connected politically, he was a billionaire and he quoted famous people and he brought famous people, young women. He was a perfect storm ofa man young women. He was a perfect storm of a man with money, power, influence and that streak of evil. Thank you for giving us your time. Much appreciated. Homies. National grid says it will learn the lessons after nearly a Million People across england and wales were affected by yesterdays power cut. The companys confirmed to the bbc that the simultaneous failure of two power stations wasnt the result of a cyber attack. The regulator, ofgem, has demanded an urgent report into what went wrong. The supply failure left thousands of train passengers stranded, homes up and down the country without electricity, and Ipswich Hospital lost power when back up generators failed. Ben ando has more. It was the biggest and most disruptive power failure in over a decade. Major stations, in chaos, passengers stranded or trapped, traffic controls inactive and a large nhs hospital without power. One of the many caught on electric trains that went dead was lily winin. The power cut off and i was sat in a carriage by myself and the storm had started outside, so all of the rain was coming onto the windows and it was pitch black and then we all started to sit together to try and piece together what was going on, because no one could really understand and the announcements were failing because of the lack of power. And then we all had to walk to the very end of the carriage in the pitch black, going through a tunnel. After four hours, lily and her fellow passengers were led along the tracks to the nearest station. At Ipswich Hospital, the main power cut was followed by a failure in emergency back up generators, but hospital managers say essential equipment was able to keep working on batteries. So what went wrong . Two generator plans, one a gas fired power station in cambridgeshire, the other a large wind farm in the north sea failed almost simultaneously. To protect the rest of the network, power was cut to certain areas. A double failure has happened before, in 2008, but with far less impact. So why so much worse this time . The Energy Regulator has asked for an urgent report. We need to do a detailed technical examination of the event and we will be sending that report through to ofgem and we will build that analysis over the coming days and weeks as we review it. And then, off that, i am sure we will learn lessons and want to review how this works to avoid some other significant impacts in future. National grid could now face a fine of up to 10 of its annual turnover. But some argue that years of underinvestment by successive governments is partly to blame, leaving the uk with a Power Network that works fine, most of the time, but is exposed when the unexpected happens. That was ben ando reporting, and a little earlier, ben updated us on the situation at Kings Cross Station which was one of the worst hit stations in london. This evening, things are becoming back to normal as far as they can. I had a look a short time ago and of the 18 departures scheduled from kings cross in the next hour, four have been cancelled. So the majority are running and the majority of people are able to complete theirjourney. But i think in the aftermath of what happened yesterday, there are two words that have come to the fore, one is resilience, the other is impact. When it comes to resilience, people are asking why have two power stations or two Power Generators gone down, what happened then . Was to cut power to people to cut power to businesses and cut power to hospitals or to railways . What is clear is that when using renewables, it is not always easy to immediately ramp up more generating capacity. The other question people are talking about is impact. Why is it that even though power was restored by half past six, for the rest of the night and well into today, there have been huge problems on the railways and one thing has become clear. There is a new fleet of trains from kings cross where i am now. They do not react well when power is cut. They get stuffy and get hot and have not got windows that passengers can open, conditions inside get quite difficult. And also, in certain circumstances, it is impossible, even when power was restored for the driver to restart the train, it has to involve an engineer or a fitter coming got to do that. And that i think it is certainly something about the department for transport who specified the trains and the Train Operating Companies will want to look at. Thank you, ben. Nigel harris, managing editor of rail magazine, told me our National Power systems should not be so fragile. Network rail has got standby generators in all of its big signal boxes and control centres so the signalling system stays alive. As soon signalling system stays alive. As soon as signalling system stays alive. As soon as a mains power goes off the generators kick ins of the signalling system stays clear. If we have a 100 diesel railway, and the railway will just continue have a 100 diesel railway, and the railway willjust continue but of course we have not, the main lines are overhead electric and in the Southern Region we have third Rail Electrification and if you pull the plug the railway within its power stations to energise 25,000 volt overhead wires so if you lose power the network stops, you literally unplug national network. How unusual an event do you think this was . Is this something that has been troubling people as a possibility in the Rail Industry for a while . guess it gets looked at, i have been real 25 years and i cannot recall, there was one other incident where there was one other incident where there was one other incident where there was a power failure like this and it was very original, nothing on the scale. The idea that you get a sort of power outage which takes out three quarters of the main lines is just outrageous. The National Grid should not be so resilient, lack of resilience, in terms of having reserve online that you lose two power stations and the whole system seems to collapse if the railway was so ill prepared, then we would have a very different interview. Do you think that the Railway Industry will be lobbying the Energy Industry to Say Something needs to be done and this is what we would suggest . Say Something needs to be done and this is what we would suggest . I am sure those points will be made but for Goodness Sake it should not need the railway, this affected i Million People, it about hospitals, hundreds of thousands of homes, we are the fifth biggest economy in the world and we cannot have the main National Power system superbly resilient, it will not do. Nigel harris. Meanwhile, there has been more disruption for travellers today after heavy rain and strong winds led to the temporary closure of the west coast mainline between england and scotland and the cancellation of several ferry services. Alison freeman reports. Dramatic scenes in london, as the predicted high winds hit the city. In russell square, fallen trees ripped an iron fence from the ground and crushed a car. In west london, the wind took another casualty, knocking out a phone line. Across the south and wales, railways and roads were disrupted by fallen trees. The high winds also causing speed restrictions for trains and routes to be shut to high sided vehicles. The welsh coastline was battered like here, the strongest gust of wind, 61 mph, was recorded nearby. Strong winds also saw all racing cancelled on the first day of the oldest and largest sailing regatta. Organisers said gusts to a5 knots or 52 mph were unsafe. It is not unusual for us to lose a day in the week. Usually in august because of not enough wind. This year. It is not unheard of for us to lose it to being too windy. Every two or three years, we end up losing a day because it is too windy. But in the north, it was the heavy rain that was causing most problems. In north yorkshire, this road became a river. Passengers on five trains on the west coast mainline were left stranded at one point, as flooding between cumbria and scotland closed the route. Its been really hard. I got on at liverpool to get to preston. We got on at preston and got kicked off. There was no one there to tell us where we needed to go. Then there was a bus replacement that wasnt there and some man shouted that the trains going, we got on that, but we need to get back to liverpool tonight and we have been told we need to get back on the train now to get to liverpool. We came from surrey, before eight oclock, it is now whatever time it is, quarter past four, and we only have got as far as carlisle. It has been a big problem for everybody because the trains all ended at preston, so everybodys sitting on the trains going north, we were asked to leave the train. And there wasnt a great deal of information given out at that time. The line has since reopened, but delays are expected for the rest of the day. A yellow weather warning will remain in place for most of england and scotland into midnight thought more heavy rain forecast overnight. The headlines on bbc news. The disgraced us financier Jeffrey Epstein has been found dead in his prison cell while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. National grid has said it will learn lessons after nearly one Million People across england and wales lost power yesterday. Michael gove says there will be a Government Support fund to help british businesses in the event of a no deal brexit. Sport now and a full round up from the bbc sport centre. Good evening. Manchester city have laid down a marker in their opening game of the season, getting their title defence off to a winning start with a thumping victory over west ham. Raheem sterling scored a hat trick in a 5 0 win that saw var play a significant role for the first time in the premier league. Patrick gearey reports. Pep guardiola rarely sits still. In him sits an energy that will not allow him to rest on last year, making manchester citys bubble burst. Kyle walker was rearing to start. Mark, set, go, goal. Gabrieljesus the scorer, west ham blown away in seconds. City had been subdued but eventually old patterns and rhythms re emerged. Raheem sterling, 2 0. It looks simple. It isnt. It takes long hours to produce football so seamless as gabrieljesus scores, most were admiring it. But this year we have video assisted referees to study things closer, much closer. Sterling offside by a sliver of his shoulder, no goal. It was a temporary reprieve. Sterling added a second and wanted to take this penalty. Sergio aguero did. Fortunately for him, var spotted west ham players where they shouldnt be. Take two, take that. Ao. Hat trick. Yesterday, liverpool scored four. Today, city scored five. Catch them if you can. Patrick gearey, bbc news. In terms of five goals a perfect start for us. Not all where we want to be but it is normal. We knew this game, 12. 30, hot, i knew that we were. We lost a lot of simple balls and that is so difficult to have a good tempo of our game. Tottenham came from behind to beat newly promoted aston villa 3 1 in their first match at the clubs new stadium. Harry kane scored twice to help save spurs blushes after they spent 70 minutes 1 0 down to villa. Adam wild reports. After the Building Work at tottenham now comes the rebuilding. The villa back at last. Both these clubs have about them a new up. Time than to sit down and take a look. Spurs fans will want more this season. Moura provided it. So close to being much better, not everything changes. Indeed having been linked with a move away from aston villa in the summer, mcginn s
