Weve been to Sheffield Hallam where the local mpjared 0mara has said he is unfit to continue in the job and plans to stand down. That was after his chief of staff apparently used the mps official twitter account to denounce his boss as selfish and degenerate, and to accuse him of letting his constituents down. But whats really been going on . And what do his constituents make of it all . 0ur reporter sean clare has been to sheffield to find out. And a warning, this report contains some Strong Language just after three and a half minutes in. Jared 0mara, labour party, 21,000. Applause jared 0mara took this sheffield seat from nick clegg. It was one of the biggest shocks of the 2017 general election. An unknown 35 year old bar owner whod campaigned for disability rights had ousted the deputy Prime Minister, riding a wave of ill feeling over tuition fees. But that was about as good as it got for the constituencys first ever labour mp. Last month, for the second time, he said he was cutting back on his mps duties. He also told journalists hed made three attempts to take his own life. This is the story about the impact on his constituents. There must be a process to make sure that every constituent has an elected member of parliament that is actually effective in doing thejob. 0n the labour party. I cant imagine that people are going to be too quick to vote for labour again in this constituency. And whetherjared 0mara has been used by those who were supposed to be helping him. People have joked to me that i was basically the mp for Sheffield Hallam because jared was so, like, whats the word, not here basically. Jared 0mara was born with cerebral palsy. Last year he told the media hed been diagnosed with autism. Hes spoken openly about the difficulties of being a disabled mp and his Mental Health problems. When alleged sexist, homophobic and misogynistic comments hed made before he entered politics surfaced, he was first suspended by labour, then quit the party. But he didnt say that hed step down as an mp until his friend and recently appointed chief of staff used 0maras twitter account to publicly destroy the mps character. Gareth arnold took to twitter apparently to resign and to denounce his boss as a degenerate whod let his constituents down. It was, it seems, the final straw. This is arnold. He initially agreed to be interviewed for this programme and invited us up to film him moving offices. When we arrived, he changed his mind, saying he didnt want to be part of the story, but the following day he did give an interview to the bbc podcast the next episode. I am very muchjust a man with a job description. Youre running this office. Absolutely, yeah. Im running this office, yeah. Nobodys vetted you. I dont have a security clearance. A self described troll and political provocateur, arnold says hes an old drinking partner of jared 0maras from their days on sheffields late night bar scene. He was brought in just eight weeks ago to sort out the Mps Communications and, referring to his brutal twitter take down of jared 0mara, arnold told me he publicly burned his boss to put the mp out of his misery. He said it was like seeing a lamb by the side of the road with a half broken neck, stamping on the ground as if to kill the animal. He joked, its what youve got to do. And, strangely for an Mps Communications officer, he tried to direct me to the most vocal critics of his friend and boss and he told me it is him, notjared 0mara, who has been blocking constituents from contacting the mp on twitter. Something those constituents have only complained about happening since arnold took control of the twitter account. If youre going to be a twat, he told me, youre going to be blocked. Constituentjodi garth set up a Facebook Group for people in Sheffield Hallam worried about their lack of political representation. She says people were blocked for asking legitimate questions of their mp. It was one of the ways of contacting him, so, by blocking them, they didnt have that way of contacting him any more. And, at the end of the day, it was just shutting down constituents who were trying to reach out. On a lot of his tweets, and its difficult to know which tweets came from him and which came from his communications officer, seemed to almost ridicule us. He blocked quite a lot of our members in the first instance. Some people who were calling him up on his bad behaviour, he just replied with various memes, gifs, stuff like that. If you look through his twitter feed now, there is his thing about having a statement and the one before says, if i had a dog id name him stephen. Justin buxton is a labour party member. He says he questioned 0mara in person about his unorthodox use of twitter and that the mp told him he had nothing to do with it. It was all arnold. This yearjared has not done any tweets, has not twittered. Its all been Gareth Arnold, his so called chief of staff, whos. Whos been taking over the twitter account. But what are the motivations of Gareth Arnold . When i met him, he showed me what he said was his tory Party Membership card. He said hed been a memberforfive years and weve seen a tweet from him suggesting Jeremy Corbyn should have been murdered instead of the labour mpjo cox. Its not clear exactly what role Gareth Arnold played or is continuing to play in jared 0maras office. Labour sources claim arnold is manipulating jared for his own ends. An allegation arnold says is laughable. Jared 0mara said he intends to resign after the summer, saying hes in no fit state to continue as an mp. He said hell be seeking professional help for his Mental Health and his personal issues, but, in the meantime, hell carry on collecting his wages and Sheffield Hallams constituents will be without an mp. Jared 0maras office told us he has five Staff Members and that casework is ongoing. They told us there is no backlog although the two constituents we spoke to for this film are still waiting for a response. One of them was ann marie, who has multiple debilitating conditions, and wanted 0maras office to do more on disabled parking and raising disability issues in the commons. I was brought up in a labour family, and i supported labour for a long time. And i did actually vote forjared this time because i thought, yeah, thats, you know, the potential hope here and, yeah, ive been really let down. He could well be in post. Well, we cant say in post. Hes not in post, is he . But he may well be on the bankroll till the end of september, possibly mid 0ctober. Unfortunately, theres not a lot we can do about that. One of the men attempting to restore faith in politics after the expenses scandal was, ironically, nick clegg, who 0mara beat in 2017. He introduced a law allowing constituents to sack their mp, but the powers were limited. An mp has to be a convicted criminal or have been suspended from the house of commons before they can face being recalled. We, as constituents, had nothing we could do. We looked if we could recall them and theres zero legislation for that. We discussed with the office of the speaker of the house and they said theres not much we can do. He is responsible for his party. He doesnt have a party. Weve contacted parliamentary standards. They dont deal with individuals. We started to try a petition on the government website. You cant make a petition about someone losing theirjob. All these things that are supposed to be there to support us, we basically got told you need to talk to your mp. But we cant because we dont have one. Thats the issue. 0ne local councillor described 0mara as a paper candidate. He was never expected to win and long standing labour members likejustin are living with the consequences. I cant help but think its a squandered opportunity. I cant imagine that people are going to be too quick to vote for labour again in this constituency. Who do you blame for that then . I think the labour party should have taken more care about the selection of jared as a candidate. Labour told us they followed the correct procedures in selecting 0mara and continue to support him. Its understood the party rejects the idea that background social media checks would have revealed concerns about him. Do you feel like yourself and other constituents have any form of recourse . It was fairly touch and go whether he would actually resign in the end and he has clung on for two years now. Its only really been capitulated by the behaviours of his chief of staff on twitter. That chief of staff is, of course, Gareth Arnold. Serious questions remain about the office he is now running and in whose interests he is working. Earlier this year, 0maras well thought of and experienced staff left or were sacked, leaving arnold and his young team running the constituency office. Like his boss, arnold says hes still getting paid while he works out his notice period, leaving a list of questions his constituents and taxpayers will want answering. Liz is bbc radio sheffields political reporter and has been following this story. What is the latest from the constituency . Jared 0mara was elected as a labour mp, now as an independent mp, what are voters thinking about this whole episode . There is a whole range of emotions from anger, frustration, to some relief that perhaps this might be drawing to some sort of clothes or conclusion. Sadness as well. Remember, jared 0mara won for the labour party and that was a big deal in 2017, it was the first time the constituency had a labour mp and a lot of people were feeling positive about that. There is a great deal of sadness among labour voters it has turned out the way that it has. Certainly this year things have deteriorated and there has been an increasing level of frustration and that why we have seen the Facebook Group starting up because constituents are concerned they have no one to contact. The fortunate thing is, while there are undoubtedly people who will need access to their mp in the hallam constituency, it is a relatively affluent constituency, it is a relatively afflu e nt area constituency, it is a relatively affluent area and therefore the level of casework isnt as much in hallam as it would be in of the poorer parts of sheffield. That is why we havent had quite so much of this coming to the fore until this year when the Office Closed down com pletely year when the Office Closed down completely and people were left with nowhere to go. Lets talk about how this fits into brexit, we know there has been closely fought brexit votes in the commons, every vote counts, we know that. What is the general reaction in the constituency and how are people feeling there of the prospect of a no deal . That is one thing people have been extremely frustrated about, the voting record is something that has come up time and time again, people ringing our Radio Station here. Sheffield hallam is one of only two areas in the whole of South Yorkshire where people voted to remain. There have been some extremely close votes in the commons, where every vote counts. I think people have felt like their voices havent been heard because of the labour areas in South Yorkshire, mps there are in brexit voting areas, almost challenging what the labour party is now proposing. If parliament wasnt in recess right now we would be hearing a lot more about it and the constituents would be hoping very much, they would be a quick by election so they feel like they can get representation as soon as possible. In all fairness to jared 0mara, it is something he himself was campaigning on, for him to be able to vote remotely and for all mps able to vote remotely and for all m ps vote able to vote remotely and for all mps vote remotely because of his physical disability, which meant he found it difficult getting to parliament. This has been a continuing issue, buti parliament. This has been a continuing issue, but i think constituents will want a quick by election so they have representation as soon as possible. You talk about the by election do we have any timelines of when jared 0mara will stand down and won a by election will take place . 0mara will stand down and won a by election will take place . M needs jared 0mara to tender his resignation when he says he is going to end that will be on september the 3rd when parliament returns. The party whips have to issue a writ and once that is done, there is a timescale of 21 to 27 working days after which the by election will happen. Assuming jared 0mara does issue his resignation on the 3rd of september, as he said he would and the writ is then issue, but then puts us in a by election between, my mathematics is between the 11th and the 3rd of october. We could have a swi rly the 3rd of october. We could have a swirly fairly swift by election but there is no rules as to which party has to do it, it is usually done within three months, sometimes it takes longer. If that happens we might have to run up to, it is about to happen anytime soon and they are about 15 minutes late at the moment. But what we believe they will say is they are continuing this search, 250 people have been scouring the jungle behind me. This is a 15 square kilometre nature reserve. It goes on for miles and miles, there are rivers, creeks and all sorts of nasty animals and insects there. The family are not giving up on the potential that she could have been abducted, given the window in their valour was open on the ground floor when she went missing. Give us a sense,is when she went missing. Give us a sense, is this incredibly remote . You talked about the dense jungle, there will be concerns. Are there any houses and places nearby or are we talking really remote . We flew a drone over the top today to have a look. This is a very remote area up in the hills. You can see it is on a precipice onto this jungle area in the foothills of some mountains. If you look on google maps, you will see whether resort is it is wedged next to this great expanse of jungle. The trail leads up to then green and nothingness. Herfamily there, this is a very tricky environment. Her family say it is unlikely because she has never wandered off alone before. They dont think that it is she has gone missing, they believe she has been abducted. Howard johnson, thank you for that update. Deaths from asthma are at a 10 year high, according to analysis of new figures. More than 1,400 people died from an asthma attack last year in england and wales, according to the Charity Asthma uk. Thats up 33 from 2008. In the past ten years more than 12,700 have died from the condition. Joining me now is Rosamund Kissi debrah, her nine year old daughter ella died of an asthma attack in 2013. Experts have since linked her fatal attack to air pollution. Im alsojoined by dr samantha walker, director of policy and research at the Charity Asthma uk who analysed those figures, and jonathan grigg, professor of paediatric respiratory and enviornmental medicine at Queens University london. Hes a member of the uk committee on the medical effects on air pollution. Thank you all so much for coming in this morning. I want to begin by speaking to you, rosamunde. People will be familiar with the sad story of ellas death and the fight you have taken on to prove that air pollution was the reason she had that fatal asthma attack . These figures dont surprise me. Asthma is the most common childhood disease in the most common childhood disease in the united kingdom. My issue with asthma is, it is not taken seriously. My daughter was severely asthmatic, which is slightly different and the doctors will demonstrate the difference between mild asthma and severe asthma and i didnt have the luxury of not taking it seriously because it was that severe. The reason i am here today is still at the British Public know that asthma as a whole needs to be taken seriously, because it is not. These figures do not surprise me because it is not taken seriously. When you say not seriously, do you mean when you go to a doctor they say, oh, it isjust asthma . Yes, it is so common. I was say, oh, it isjust asthma . Yes, it is so common. I was so say, oh, it isjust asthma . Yes, it is so common. I was so surprised when my daughter died, i assumed when my daughter died, i assumed when my daughter died, i assumed when my daughter died that everybody who died from asthma, they had severe asthma. But death is more common in mild asthma because it could be seasonal, so maybe during the pollen season you know whereby there are triggers that might come on board. But obviously, the figures, they tell their own story. Doctor samantha walker, d gray, is it absolutely not taken seriously by the medical profession. It is not taken the medical profession. It is not ta ken seriously by the medical profession. It is not taken seriously by people with asthma and their doctors and nurses. Because so many people have asthma and because so many people dont have any problems with their asthma, it is easy to think, it isjust asthma. What people need to be doing is saying, asthma can kill people, it killed ella, killed three people every day. That is not to make everybody paranoid, but make people to treat it with respect. Professor, how does air pollution affect asthma . Air pollution in the uk, weve got sooty particles and nitrogen dioxide which gets deep into the lungs and affects the immune cells in the long and causes asthma. We have 560 new cases of asthma. We have 560 new cases of asthma in children that we wouldnt haveif asthma in children that we wouldnt have if we had the who limits. It also if you get asthma, have had asthma, air pollution will trigger asthma, air pollution will trigger asthma attacks. Presumably, children are more vulnerable if they have asthma in a particularly polluted environment . Children are vulnerable in terms of their lungs developing and very Young Children will breathe in more particles into their lungs. But this effect is both in children and adults, so it is the whole population being affected. Lots of people getting in touch. Jane on twitter says asthma can impact on everyday life at that realisation because it is normal. I have periods where it has been brittle. Lynn on e mail says, prescription costs in england are £9 and item. Perhaps people are only buying their reliever inhaler and not the preve nter reliever inhaler and not the preventer inhaler because £18 a month for two might be unaffordable. Should asthma inhalers be free on prescription . We are doing a big campaign on that at the moment trying to get the government to understand the 1966 exemption list, the last time it was looked at, should reconsider whether people with asthma should get their prescriptions free. We have good data to show people are skimping on food, School Uniforms and other things because they need to buy their medicines or they choose those things and dont pick up their medicines. It is the preventer inhaler that people dont go with. We have had case studies before where i know a teenager died because she was trying to save her drugs, make them last longer and longer and she died because she didnt have any left. It is so tragic so we really need to rethink that. 50 years ago, now is the time to rethink that list. I know there is going to be another inquest into ellas death and she could become the first person in the uk where air pollution is listed as the cause of her death. What do you want government authorities to make sure no one is affected in the way ella was . L authorities to make sure no one is affected in the way ella was . A lot of Education Needs to be had and raising awareness is key. A lot of people still dont know the impact ofair people still dont know the impact of air pollution. All the urban cities across the uk have issues with asthma, manchester, birmingham, all over. There needs to be a whole programme of education in and out of school about the impact of air pollution on young peoples hell. That is key to some of the problems. If there is a parent watching this, you know this only too well and you live in a city and fear about pollution, what can you do today . Basically, if you have asthma, one of the things you can actually do, this is a space. Every Single Person who has asthma needs to have a spacer. This is also the sibutramine, you are talking about, they need to check before they go in school in september, this ventolin is actually in data because it does expire. I am sure some of the doctors will back me up saying this, if this has expired it will not be as effective. Every child with asthma also needs to have an asthma plan. They also need to have a review at least a minimum of once a year. It is crucial they actually go. If you feel your asthma is out of control, please do not wait for once a year and go and see your gp. That is how serious this is but every person should have a spacer whenever they are using the inhaler and they need to be used together. It makes it more effective taking it correctly . 70 of people dont take that macro i have never seen one of these. You have never seen it . Have you got the big one . There is a bigger one, the same effect, itjust means you dont have to coordinate the puffing and the breathing, very effective. Professor, it was raised there, the idea of air pollution in every city in the uk, people do associate they would be higher air pollution, is it a city problem are wider than that . Air pollution is pa rt of wider than that . Air pollution is part of the problem we have this epidemic in asthma but there are many other complex reasons for having severe asthma. The key thing is if you have asthma, you have to have the appropriate treatment and understand why, for example, you need to inhaled steroids, even if you feel well. This is where the Health System has to take the time and resources to explain this properly to children, young people and parents and adults. Thank you all so much for coming in. The new premier League Season starts tomorrow, and this year, of the leagues teams will have the logos of Gambling Companies on their shirts. Its the joint highest number ever. Burnley, bournemouth, west ham, aston villa, wolves, everton, crystal palace, norwich, watford and newcastle will all display the names of betting companies on their shirts, in deals thought to be collectively worth about £70 million. Last year one of our reporters, chris hemmings, looked at why so many more men develop gambling problems than women. Sports betting, and specifically betting on football, was a big factor. Im in east london to meet matt. He says as soon as he turned 18 he started gambling on football in the pub with his mates. By september last year, and atjust 22 years old, hed already gambled away nearly £30,000. I started placing small bets on the football. And then it sort of got more and more out of hand. So i started placing larger stakes and then, obviously, i started losing a lot more than what i was intending to. You cant go to the pub on a saturday afternoon without having the football on the tv and then, obviously, theres adverts that come on and you sort of get the urge to have a bet on the football. And i couldnt watch a game of football without having a bet on it. I think with all men, you just want to live the high life. You just want to be able to do whatever you want to do. So i think, with gambling, its a way in your mindset of making money, but i think, in reality, itjust takes you down. Think fast. Act faster in play. For example, its estimated that british men will watch an average of about 20,000 hours of televised sport throughout their lifetime with football being, by far, the most popular. In comparison, women will watch about half that amount. In october last year, this programme found that almost all ad breaks during Live Football matches feature at least one gambling advert. In the 25 games we watched, there were over 1300 adverts. About one in five of those were for betting. Richard masters has been acting head of the premier league forjust over a year, and says he doesnt think they need to step in to cap gambling sponsorship. I dont think were at a position yet where we are concerned that we have to intervene in any way and neither do i feel that government are about to do so, either, so i think betting is part of what brings people into football. Its only a small part but it is part of it and it is part of the game. Lets speak now to charles ritchie, co founder of gambling with lives, who work with families of those who have taken their own lives as a result of a gambling addiction. And matt fryer, manager of headingley afc, which is sponsored by gambling with lives. Thank you both so much for speaking to us today. I want to start by speaking to you, charles, because i know that you work with lots of families whove lost young men, and you yourself lost your son, tell us about jack. Yeah, well, jack started gambling at the age of 17 while still at in his lunch hour, with his mates, spending their dinner money on fixed or betting terminals in a bookies near school. When we found out, he told us about a year later, we now understand that he really had a deep and serious addiction, which he struggled with for seven years and then jack took he struggled with for seven years and thenjack took his own life in november 2017. And apart from the fa ct november 2017. And apart from the fact that its hugely, i mean, your world crashes around you at that moment, when you lose your son, but for you to be working with other families, you realise that this isnt isolated by any means . No, absolutely, it really is the hidden addiction. Fat at but actually, we did know about jacks gambling, he did tell us, but we didnt understand what a deep and serious addiction it is. Its been classified as an addiction as serious as heroin since as long ago as 2013. But really, the Health Messaging around gambling just isnt and wasnt there. And certainly, the suicide risk was never mentioned. When jack suicide risk was never mentioned. Whenjack died, we set about finding otherfamilies, whenjack died, we set about finding other families, because we were introduced to another family in sheffield who had lost their son and anotherfamily sheffield who had lost their son and another family in the south west had lost their son just another family in the south west had lost their sonjust a another family in the south west had lost their son just a month before jack and we started realising, were not the only family here. So, we established contact with a lot of otherfamilies, we established contact with a lot of other families, we also started doing the research, to say, what is known about this . And we were absolutely shocked in terms of, theres a Research History going back decades, literally decades, of lincoln gambling and suicide. 0ur estimates based on International Research are that it was Something Like between 250 650 deaths per year. The most recent research from sweden showed that there was with a gambling disorder where 15 times more likely to die by suicide than men from the general population. So, pa rt men from the general population. So, part of our task has been raising awareness with other families, but also with government and with the industry, about the fact that weve got a really dangerous product here, and there needs to be a proper Public Health message. Charles, i wa nt to Public Health message. Charles, i want to bring in matt fryer, who is also with us, manager of your shot which is sponsored by gambling with lives. And that was after one of your own players took his life because of gambling, so, your club was touched by this as well with the death of lewis . Yeah, obviously, louis ozaki part of our club, is a key player, management of the teams, and a very close friend to all of us so and a very close friend to all of us so it really rocked us and brought this to our attention as well, the dangers and pitfalls of gambling. Matt, amongst the players and people at the club, i appreciate it is slightly different because of everything you have been through and seeing the death of lewis, but is gambling a big part of football, even at the level youre playing cardioi even at the level youre playing cardio i think so, yeah. I think most players enjoy to have a bet on a couple of Football Games on a weekend. But i think its hard to get away from it now. We mentioned before the number of clubs and sponsored by Gambling Companies, and also the adverts. If we watch a game after weve played our match, the adverts are on before, at half time, so adverts are on before, at half time, so its very difficult to get distance from that. And we dont wa nt distance from that. And we dont want to say that no one could ever gamble again but it is about having a healthy relationship, and to know where to turn if things do become problematic. Let me read both of you this statement from the remote gabbling association. They say. We are responding positively to public concerns, and this month we have voluntarily introduced a whistle to whistle ban on advertising during all sporting events except horseracing and greyhound racing and we prohibit the use of Company Logos on any merchandise designed for children, including childrens sports shirts. Do you think that goes far enough . Not at all. Advertising is obviously one important aspect of action that is needed. But actually what you have got is, you have got a range of products which are actually too dangerous to be on the market. When the government changed the maximum bet on fixed odds betting terminals to £2, that was the first time that the government had recognised that a gambling product was too dangerous to be on the market. Now, the same products are available online, with no restrictions. We do worry about the developments in in game betting gambling products, because of the speed of interaction that players have with that, that it makes them highly addictive. Also, weve got an industry which actually pursues people who have gambling problems. Through direct marketing, through offers of free bets, through making them vips if theyre big losers. It is so much more than advertising. Im sure the gambling firms would say that they were not actively. They would say they were trying to support people and protect people from gambling but i do appreciate the point. Well, it would be very interesting to see what they see themselves as actually doing. There is a lot of words but their model is to place the blame for gambling, for curbing gambling, on the individual. It should be a three way, shared responsibility between, yes, the individual, but government have a role, industry have a role. Matt, we were saying before, richard masters, the acting chief executive of the premier league, says they do not need to intervene, they dont need to stop sponsorship by betting firms on shirts, do you think football needs to do more, for example there should bea ban to do more, for example there should be a ban on football shirts sponsorship by betting firms . |j think sponsorship by betting firms . think the clubs themselves should probably try and take more responsibility. They act as a big pa rt of responsibility. They act as a big part of the community, were trying to start a trend, i guess, and to be trailblazers in terms of having a more positive message. Sponsorship isa part more positive message. Sponsorship is a part of football and clubs rely on that money but i do think that they should think about the morals of it as well. And what message theyre sending out to the fans. Could i just say that were working through the big step project with asking clubs, basically, to re evaluate their relationship with gambling and think about what they can do to help their own fans who are suffering gambling problems. Young men watching football are amongst those at the highest risk of developing gambling disorder, so clu bs developing gambling disorder, so clubs do have a responsibility for theirfans. New research by the bbc shows that the cost of a cremation at a council owned site has risen by almost a fifth overall since 2015. And bereaved families are facing huge variations in costs depending on where they live in the uk. The cost ranges from £392 in belfast to £960 in milton keynes, and thats before any extras are added, such as the coffin, a hearse or any flowers and the fees of a funeral director. Milton Keynes Council says they set their prices to cover their costs and are investing in bereavement services. Privately run crematoria often charge even more than councils. So, what effect can these costs have on bereaved relatives, and are there any alternatives . We can now talk to rosie inman cook, who helps people save money for their loved ones funerals, teresa samuel, who went into debt in order to pay for her brothers funeral, and samia khalaf tossio, who went diy for her mums celebration of life. Thank you forjoining us. Rosie, i wa nt to thank you forjoining us. Rosie, i want to start by asking you, why is it that funerals are so expensive . Well, thats a very complicated question. The crematorium fees are known as disbursements and they represent may be only 25 of an overall basic funeral cost. The majority of the fee is made up by, as you touched on, by the Funeral Directors charges, and there are many things you can do to get that down. Shopping around, for starters. Secondly, like samia khalaf tossio, there is no law that says you have to employ a funeral director. Most people need their help but that is one option for families that have a robust group around them, that they can actually do it themselves. guess the tricky thing is, that requires you to be really organised, to shop around, because when youre in grief, youre not going to think about shopping around to get a good deal on a funeral . No, you arent, and we had the benefit of planning ahead because my mum, her inevitability was, cancer, we knew she had a short time, so we could plan ahead. And she chose her own bamboo coffin and she chose her lot at the Woodland Burial ground, she was the first person to buy a plot there before they had even opened, they named the area that she is buried in after her because of that. And we were one of the first funerals that they had and i know from actually having spoken to them that they use our celebration of life, that we had time to plan for, as an example to other families that are going through a funeral process and a bereavement. And if you are able to plan ahead, i certainly would recommend that two people, because it gave us that time to work things out when the emotions werent running high, when the grief and sadness, it wasnt there clouding it. If it is fresh in the mind, its tough. So do plan ahead. And between the cost of the plot and the digging of the grave and the bamboo coffin, i think we spent less than £900. Then we had our party, our gazebo, that popped up, we had our food, our buffer, we had our guests, and we had a beautiful celebration of her life in a fantastic natural Woodland Burial ground, which is a joy. Life in a fantastic natural Woodland Burial ground, which is ajoy. So that was really positive for you. I know that for you, teresa samuel, it was a different story, because. Tell us about the problems you had with the funeral costs for your brother . Well, my brother. Noone came forward to do the funeral so i was next of kin and came forward to do the funeral so i was next of kin and i went around Funeral Directors and all of that and some of them wouldnt do it because i wanted family to go to the funeral. The crematorium itself, this lovely little place, but i didnt realise the extent of the cost. The crematorium itself, the cremation was £958, the basic was £3021, and i was left with a bill £4300, which was quite a lot of money. Could you afford that. No, i couldnt, i am a single parent, ive got a little boy, ive got two elder sons, ive been really ill as well over the years, ive had major surgery. Over the years, ive had major surgery. Its been a bit of a tough time. It must be incredibly stressful, not to mention youre also grieving for your brother. Yeah, it was. I went to the government and asked for some help andl government and asked for some help and i lost an appeal and they only offered me £431, Something Like that. I went for reconsideration and i lost that and they actually said there was a company which helps people who are in debt so i gave them a ring and she helped me out from there. So, you got some support. Let me ring some messages, this one says. I rarely hear it mentioned that you can donate your body to medical research. I have done this and my body goes to Edinburgh University if they accept it. It is free so it solves paying out a fortune in funeral costs. Another text anonymously says, i have just cremated my husband, were both disabled, and i still am and it has left me with a bill of over £3800. If it wasnt for my son and his girlfriend lending me the money, i dont know what i would have done is my husband did not even agree with insurance. This one says. Funerals are a rip off album going to have a basic cremation, no funeral, no flowers, just dump me on a flowerbed somewhere. Hayley, im not sure youre allowed to do that but i might be wrong. Can you give some tips for people, who might be watching this programme, to avoid some of these costs . If you cant do diy, the answer is to possibly think about a direct cremation or a direct burial. These are funeral director arranged sendoffs but they are unattended by the family. And they cost a quarter of the price. So youre looking for a direct cremation at about £1000, £1200, and for a direct burial at a natural burial site for example about £60, so theyre far more affordable, a third of the price. David bowie did it, prince did it, they started it and it has taken off and the funeral industry in the uk has finally realised theyve got to start doing it and so most Funeral Directors, you need to ask for a direct funeral. Let me read you a statement from the local Government Association talking about the huge differences in cost for cremations at local authorities across the country. Councillor simon blackburn, chair of the safer and stronger communities board, says. Counsel fees account for on average less than a quarter of the overall cost of the cremation and less than half of the cremation and less than half of that for a burial. Surplus revenue is mostly reinvested in cemetery and crematoria infrastructure, to address demand and provide the services we families want. Just a final thought from you, samia, was it quite overwhelming when you have a conversation with your mum, were going to organise the funeral, do you even know where to start . 0h, the funeral, do you even know where to start . Oh, there was a lot of laughter and joy and there was a lot of. Really, we put the fun in funeral, we genuinely did. We have that strength in our family that we are happy to communicate about all these things. So, yeah, it was definitely not a heart wrenching. You know, you have the emotion of it because you know its inevitable. But we found a way to make itjoyful and we made itjoyfulfor all the other people that then attended her celebration and actually be in her funeral director and going to the hospice where she was in the and going to pick her body up and loading that beautiful bamboo coffin that she had hand selected and taking her and putting her in the carand taking her and putting her in the car and shoving the prospect and the buffy food and everything and the gazebo, either side of her bamboo coffin in the back of my car, and all of the nurses at the hospice, they came, anybody who was on duty came to see this family come and pick up their loved one. It really, really was. Everybody had tears in their eyes and they were happy tea rs. We were their eyes and they were happy tears. We were obviously sad but this was a really happy, happy time. It was a major, beautiful sendoff. The men in on here, the sombre faces and the funeral car there was this colour and vibrancy and laughter and iy colour and vibrancy and laughter and joy and light. And that was my mums life anyway. And that is how we sent her off. And driving away from that hospice, i took a hard her off. And driving away from that hospice, itook a hard right her off. And driving away from that hospice, i took a hard right turn, because she had said to me, none of this slow driving nonsense, so i took a hard right turn, her coffin slides to the left, my brother and i are going, whoa the whole thing, we had the benefit of planning ahead. You removed all of the baggage. We did, anybody that came to see and ta ke did, anybody that came to see and take part in the funeral, kids, they didnt have to sit quietly, they didnt have to sit quietly, they didnt have to sit quietly, they didnt have to. It was a celebration. It was, they could run free. Thank you all of you for coming in. Tomorrow, Queens Park Rangers loftus road stadium will be renamed the Kiyan Prince Foundation stadium, the first time the clubs ground has ever changed its name. Kiyan prince was a member of qprs Youth Academy who was stabbed to death in may 2006 when he was just 15 years old. His father mark set up the Kiyan Prince Foundation to try and inspire disaffected young people and steer them away from crime. His work led him to win a vote by fans about the renaming of the stadium and tomorrow mark and his family will be at qprs first match to mark the special day. Talking to us now are mark prince and lee hoos, the ceo of qpr. Thank you both are coming in, i really appreciate it. Mark, before we talk about the stadium and the renaming, tell us about kiyan. There is so much to tell. We dont have the time, but in a nutshell, he had a lot of swag, he was a lovely boy, good looking young man, very talented, but what i loved most was his character. Who he was as an individual. And its shown in many stories when i meet young people, his kindness, his thoughtfulness, his kindness, his thoughtfulness, his value, he valued other peoples lives, and it showed in the way he looked out for others, he was always stopping fights that were breaking out in the playground and at football matches that he played outside on the streets in his neighbourhood. So, kiyan demonstrated for me how much of a goodhearted person he was and i think that is what makes him special and makes him stand out, he had a lot of sense of humour about him as well. So, bearing all of that in mind, what does this mean, for that stadium, for loftus road, to be renamed after your son . There is no words that can really describe it. Im still trying to get my head around that it is actually happening. I look at the top and i see the Kiyan Prince Foundation stadium, i see qpr on the top as well, and i think, wow when the unveiling happens tomorrow, im sure theres going to be tears ofjoy, emotions are going to be high, his mum,i emotions are going to be high, his mum, i havent seen her that happy since the day that we lost my son. Even just since the day that we lost my son. Evenjust sharing since the day that we lost my son. Even just sharing the news with her, she was over the moon, so excited. So its really something massive for the whole family and for everyone that loved kiyan and supported him and was looking forward to him playing in the premiership and the championship with qpr. Lee hoos, many people will see this as a real heartening story coming from football because so often we hear about football being all about the money, and you could have got a lot of money for the naming of that stadium, so why did qpr make the decision to go down this road . Festival if you take a step back about football in general, i was at the Charity Shield game a couple of yea rs the Charity Shield game a couple of years ago, we were invited because of ourgame years ago, we were invited because of our game for Grenfell Tower and the work we did there. Craig said something to me which stuck with me, he said, given the chance, football a lwa ys he said, given the chance, football always comes through. It stuck with me, i thought, always comes through. It stuck with me, ithought, he always comes through. It stuck with me, i thought, he absolutely right. As you can tell by the accent im not from here, football in england is very different from anywhere else ive been, certainly different from us sports, and how Much Community work it does. Unfortunately that doesnt make a good story, people wa nt to doesnt make a good story, people want to hear about the couple of idiots that are out there doing the bad things but every Football Club up bad things but every Football Club up and down the length and breadth of the country is doing some fantastic work in the community, its just really people i dont think even know it but it is using football as the medium to go in and make social change, whether its diversionary projects are. We identified, yes, there is a value to this stadium in the naming rights, a corporate could do it, but how much are we corporate could do it, but how much a re we really corporate could do it, but how much are we really going to get for it . Ata are we really going to get for it . At a board meeting, it was said, what about a charity . We said, can you look into that . So you narrowed it down to five charities, and it was the fans, an incredible 63 , voting for it to be called after your son. Yeah, that made it even more exciting. What would kiyan think if he was there tomorrow . think if he was there tomorrow . think he would just be stunned, well, my name is up at the club that developed my skills and cared for me, because he had great relationships, great friendships, his head coach, they loved him down there. They had high expectations, he was a great start for the future. So, to see his name still, and unfortunately he was stopped from becoming that bright star that he was, but to still see that his name is still up there and hes recognised and remembered, you cant ask for a better dream than that. Recognised and remembered, you cant ask for a better dream than thatm will be bizarre because on things like much of the day, they will say the the Kiyan Prince Foundation stadium.
