After a quieter day yesterday, showers look like they will be back in force across the uk today. More details on areas likely to be affected coming up. Its sunday the 4th of august. Our top story at least 20 people have been killed in the latest mass shooting in the united states. The massacre happened in a mall in the city of el paso, where many families were out shopping. A 21 year old white man has been arrested and police are looking into whether he deliberately targeted the hispanic community. 0ur north america correspondent Chris Buckler reports. Oh, my god. Families were out shopping on a saturday morning when they were advised to run. Run, run, run. Inside the mall in el paso, armed officers moved in, responding to another report of an active shooter in america. The gunman walked into the packed walmart supermarket, firing indiscriminately. 20 people were killed and more than two dozen were injured. The estimates of the shoppers of the walmart were between one and 3,000, with employees present, it is back to school and walmart was at capacity when the shootings occurred. El paso sits at americas border with mexico. It has a large hispanic population, and many people cross over into the us to visit friends and go shopping. Police say the suspect taken into custody is white, he has been identified by local media as 21 year old patrick crusius. At a News Conference the authorities said that it was a murder investigation, but that officers were examining the possibility that the attack was a hate crime, and looking at possible links with a White Nationalist manifesto that claimed the attack was targeted at the hispanic community. It was published anonymously online. Disgusting, intolerable, not texan. And we are going to aggressively prosecute it both as capital murder and is a hate crime, which is exactly what it appears to be, without having seen all the evidence yet. In just days ago, two members of staff were killed in a separate shooting at a Walmart Store in mississippi. And days before that, people were shot dead at a Food Festival in northern california. Now it is the turn of another state to mourn. Reporter how do you get our city ready for 20 funerals . I dont know, we have never done this before. I would hope and pray we never have to do it again, but we will do it. Were going to survive, because thats who we are. In a post on twitter, President Trump described the shootings as terrible, and pledged the support of his government. But some americans will be left wondering about the more regular rhetoric used by politicians, and asking if some of this countrys deaths could be avoided if there were tighter restrictions on guns. 0ur correspondent sophie long is in el paso. What we know that one white man was arrested, he has been identified as 21 year old patrick crusius. One line of investigation is establishing whether anonymous White Nationalist manifesto that was published online has any link with him. The governor of texas was speaking earlier today, and he described the scenes that unfolded behind me as horrific. He said of the 26 injured, many are fighting life threatening injuries. It is possible the death toll could climb further. As you heard, Mass Shootings are not uncommon here. 0nly last weekend a six year old and a 13 year old were among those killed when a gunman opened fire at a festival in northern california. So there is a shock here today, el paso is considered to be one of the uss safest cities. The country is coming to terms with the horror that has unfolded here today and there are again calls for something to be done about it. Democratic president ial candidates were gathered in las vegas earlier today, we heard from a number of them, including bernie sanders, and also beto orourke. He blamed the shooting on the rising level of racism that is being seen in the us, and put some of the blame for that on President Trumps door. We have heard on twitter from the president , he and the first lady sent their prayers via twitter to the people here, as they come to terms with what happened. Another 55 homes have been evacuated near a dam in derbyshire that is in danger of collapsing. Police say its because more heavy rain is forecast. Lets talk to our reporter luxmy gopal, whos in Whaley Bridge. Just looking behind you in the distance, it does seem as if they have been able to take some of the water out of the reservoir. You can see the difference, the water level has gone down a bit. It is a deceptively idyllic scene, with the sun and the Rolling Hills and the sound of the birds chirping, but behind me there is work being carried out, teams have been working throughout the night and they are continuing today to reduce the water levels to try and make the reservoir save and resume the risk of it breaching. Derbyshires deputy chief fire officer Gavin Tomlinson has been working through the night. Tell me about the water levels. How far have they been brought down and how much further do they have to go . We have been pumping throughout the night, we have 22 high volume pumps, seven of which a fire service pumps, and others we brought in from contractors, and we are trying to pump as much water out of the dam as possible. Every bit of water we take out reduces the risk of it failing. We now know we have taken around 35 of the contents of the dam out now and we are aiming to get down to around 25 where we think it is a safe level. Throughout the night we have concentrated efforts on making sure the pumps under capacity, which means as the water level drops the dam doesnt come down on straight sides, it comes in my ears, so we have to keep relocating the pumps further into the dam to make sure we are getting them in the most efficient way possible. How worried are you about the prospect of rain this afternoon . We are keeping an eye on the forecast, it is looking good at the moment, but we have inlets to the dam blocked off, so we will do our best not to let any water into the dam and do our best to get as much out of the dam as we can. We have people from several agencies, the environmental agency, canal and river trust, contractors, civil engineers, and we are looking together with one aim in mind, which is to get as much water as we can from the dam and work on trying to make sure the integrity of the dam wall stays. How long before residents can return home . At the rate we are pumping we hope before the end of this weekend we will be ina the end of this weekend we will be in a situation to do that. While there is a chance to save the dam people will keep working to save it. I know you havent slept properly for about 48 hour is, so i will let you get back to the work. As you heard me mention, there is a prospect of heavy rain starting from around 2pm today, so residents will be watching the skies and emergency teams on the ground will be keeping a close eye on the water levels. While it does seem tranquil and picturesque, the situation here is still critical. Havent the firefighters done an amazing job we will have the forecast shortly. Borisjohnson has announced extra funding for nhs hospitals in england. The one off payment of £1. 8 billion pounds will go towards new equipment and upgrades to 20 hospitals. Lets talk to our political correspondent, jessica parker. Sojessica, some will call it a welcome investment, but critics say its still not enough . The newspaper saying borisjohnson drops £2 million, a cash bomb to woo women voters. Yes, according to nhs think tanks they are looking at spending pledges saying this is all very welcome, but it is not enough, it isa very welcome, but it is not enough, it is a drop in the ocean. Party agreeing with out, saying this comes off the back of years of cuts to spending, but looking at the politics of this, theresa may already pledged more money while she was in charge, but for borisjohnson there is particular significance because of that spending pledge on the side of that bus during the referendum campaign. I think what he is trying to do is take the fight on brexit the brexit party, and the labour on public spending. Im sure downing street will deny they are planning for that scenario, they are just looking at how to get brexit done, but we have seen from Boris Johnson a whole range of big spending pledges, which is not the behaviour of a steady as she goes mid term government, probably designed to win over voters. We will be delving into the papers and looking at those stories in more detail shortly. 60 firearms have been found hidden in a car arriving in doverfrom calais. Its believed to be the largest seizure of lethal weapons at a uk port. A 37 year old man from dublin is due to appear in court on monday. Two United Airline pilots have been arrested at glasgow airport, for allegedly failing a breath test before boarding a flight to new york. The men, aged 45 and 61, have not been charged, but remain in custody and are expected to appear before court on tuesday. They face up to two years in prison. A french inventor is hoping to cross the English Channel this morning on a jet powered hoverboard. Its franky za patas second attempt to cross the 20 mile stretch of water. He tried it last month but fell into the sea when he failed to land on a refuelling platform. Hes due to set off in around half an hour. We are waiting for live pictures of Franky Zapata. We will try to bring them to you, and hopefully he will bea them to you, and hopefully he will be a bit more successful this time. Pictures keep cutting out we see him lets return to one of our main stories now. Talks will resume later, to try to avert strike action by thousands of workers at heathrow airport, in a dispute over pay. Nearly 180 flights scheduled for tomorrow and tuesday have already been cancelled. So what does it mean for passengers . We can speak now to sean tipton from the association of British Travel agents, who is at heathrow for us this morning. I was looking at the British Airways website last night and they didnt have very much detail on which flights had been cancelled. Will we get more detail today . |j flights had been cancelled. Will we get more detail today . I would say so, yes. Logistically it is quite a difficult thing to do, so airlines will be looking into which flights they have to cancel. They will try they have to cancel. They will try the best they can to make sure customers are not affected by being placed onto alternative lights. If you are one of the unlucky ones and your flight is cancelled i would expect the airline to contact you. At the same time, it would be good advice that if you are travelling over the next two days, monday and tuesday, check on the Airlines Website to check if it has been affected. Worst Case Scenario your flight affected. Worst Case Scenario your flight is cancelled and they cant get you an alternative arrangement, at the very least they would give you an option to travel in a later date or have your money back. There also might be people build on Package Holidays in that situation so Package Holidays in that situation soi Package Holidays in that situation so i strongly advise for them to look at their tour operators. It is not just about cancelled flights look at their tour operators. It is notjust about cancelled flights but also issues of people travelling through the airport. Heathrow is saying it might expect longer queues than usual. Make sure you give to ouis than usual. Make sure you give to ours for a short haul flight and three hours for a long haulflight. You would hope your airline will switch you want to another flight, because reading this mornings papers, if your flight is cancelled you are not actually entitled to compensation. You are not entitled to compensation in the sense that you would at least get a refund for the cost of your ticket, but an eu regulation came in at 2004 saying that in certain circumstances, even airline cancels your flight they would have to pay you compensation, but there are exceptions to that. Something they call exceptional circumstances, meaning they wouldnt have to pay. And a strike is an exceptional circumstance. If it is not theirfault exceptional circumstance. If it is not their fault and they dont have to pay compensation. They do have to try to get you another flight and if they cant they have to refund your ticket. That is not a huge number in terms of the volume that heathrow handles every day, is it . No, it is an incredibly busy airport. Also, it is august, the busiest time of year. It is not the majority of flights, farfrom it, but because it is it is not the majority of flights, far from it, but because it is a busy time of year, it is trying to get those people whose lives have been cancelled on two alternatives. It may be they fly out from a different airport. That is probably why there hasnt been much information coming out straightaway, as airlines try to make the decision on what is the best way to do it. Thank you for the information. That is the situation at heathrow. It is an important day in terms of the weather, we are checking in with Whaley Bridge throughout the morning. Heres susan with a look at this mornings weather. There is a lot of showers in our forecast, we have low pressure driving the weather and it will be with us through the week ahead as well. If you dont see heavy rain today chances are you will in the coming days. Is is today chances are you will in the coming days. Isis a today chances are you will in the coming days. Is is a beautiful start in many spots, some patchy cloud drifting across from the west, but as the sun starts to strengthen up now as we go further into the day, it will inject some energy into the atmosphere and see this when the front bringing some cloud and rain into wales and the south west producing lively downpours, and particularly across the northern half of the uk, some of these showers have been pretty meaty across the south west of scotland, we have seen two inches of rain in some areas injust we have seen two inches of rain in some areas in just a couple of hours, and by the afternoon you can see it showing up here behind me, we will go take a look in close detail, the brighter colours of those showers across Northern England and parts of central and southern scotland. The met office has issued a yellow weather warning from the north midlands into central and northern scotland from midday until 10pm. The heaviest of the showers if anything are likely through the Late Afternoon into the early evening when they will start to drift offshore. Another band will then push in from the west for Northern Ireland, so actually later on in the day you will see some of the worst of the weather, and there will be the continued risk of localised flooding. Showers heavy as they push out of Northern Ireland into scotla nd out of Northern Ireland into scotland and Northern England first thing on monday, and it is a wet start to the day in the south west, quite murky as well, a lot of low cloud around for the hills of wales in the south west first thing on monday. Low pressure still with us, a breezy day on monday, the wind coming in from the west, so a more fresh feel, showers posing across england and wales perhaps tending to clear as the hours go by, whereas the scotland they will linger and were looking at a day for the northern isles, a mix of sunshine showers for Northern Ireland. And because a couple of degrees down today, 21 22 is the hi, tuesday same story, low pressure, more bands of showers not all areas getting hit by but certainly in some spot, were talking about significant rainfall totals in quite a short of time. And it is the relentless nature of these bands of showers without area of low pressure, in terms of the rain just keeps coming day on day, they will be some dry intervals and spells of sunshine, but most days this week we are at risk of seeing some rain and then come next weekend it looks like we could see somewhat whether a fact the majority of the uk. So overall the majority of the uk. So overall the summer it is a soggy story as it stands. It is that relentlessness, especially if you are threatened with floods. We were talking about Franky Zapata before, he is off, he has already gone in the distance. We will get those pictures for you. Last week the world of esports, which is a form of competitive video gaming, hit the headlines after the fornite world cup in new york saw teenagers walk away with millions of pounds in prizemoney. This weekend, hundreds of gamers are taking part in the latest esporting event, this time a little closer to home, and although becoming millionaires isnt on the agenda, small scale tournaments like it are growing in popularity. 0ur reporter navtej johal was there. Ina in a traditional sports centre, a very untraditional sports tournament. Hundreds of players have come from around the world to staffordshi re come from around the world to Staffordshire University in stoke on trent to battle it out in ane stoke on trent to battle it out in an e sports, or competitive video games competition. The favourite to win the £1200 prize this weekend is alvaro triff from spain. So you are paid bya alvaro triff from spain. So you are paid by a team to travel around the world and play video games, is it the most fun job in the world . World and play video games, is it the most funjob in the world . M world and play video games, is it the most fun job in the world . It is nice, i enjoyed it because i travel and play a lot. It may have International Interest but this is what is known as a grassroots tournament, set up by fans of this particular game, nintendos super smash brothers. There are not the sums that were at stake in last weekends fortnite world cup, or this weekends fever eworld cup in london. The audience is growing all the time. The global e sports audience is growing. Even for a grassroots event like this they are expect thing thousands of people to tune in to watch online. Staffordshi re tune in to watch online. Staffordshire university has recognised this rising industry. Last year became the first place in the uk to offer a degree in e sports. The degree is notjust about playing video games, it is about event management, we did see a gap in the market when it came to the e sports industry, where we needed more knowledgeable people to run a sports events. In the uk the videogame sector is now worth more than video and music sales combined. There is even talk of a sports becoming an olympic sport. Can you see a world where e sports is just as popular or even more popular than some of the traditional sports . Yes we can, because when we look at the stats, we have already exceeded some of the stadiums, the viewership levels of traditional sports. It looks like fun, all those parents who are saying, do something useful, do something useful you can play on youripad do something useful you can play on your ipad a bit longer. I said it wasjuly your ipad a bit longer. I said it was july before, your ipad a bit longer. I said it wasjuly before, but ijust looked at the papers, it is august it stilljuly weather, lets have a look at todays front pages. The sunday telegraph says that mps have been told it is too late to stop a no deal brexit. The paper says dominic cummings, the Prime Ministers aide, has briefed mps that the opposition has missed the chance to force an election before the deadline of 31 october. The mail on sunday says the uk is demanding that the eu reopen talks on the withdrawal deal, saying chief negotiator Michel Barnier has no mandate since a new European Parliament was elected in may. Its headline is get new orders, monsieur barnier. The observer also has a brexit related lead story, but its main picture is a dramatic image of an raf chinook helicopter helping to shore up the dam at Whaley Bridge in derbyshire. And the sunday times reports that doctors have created a revolutionary procedure which can delay the menopause by up to 20 years. Its an ovarian transplant surgery which can take as little as 30 minutes. The writer and broadcaster Robert Meakin is here to tell us whats caught his eye. Good morning. So if we are heading toa good morning. So if we are heading to a general election, he has hit the ground running. He certainly has. I think new premises are given a bit of grace because i know people who know borisjohnson will low them, but there are a lot of undecideds there, and i think you can get away with making these big broad policy statements in the first few days, because there is still something of a novelty, people will give you a hearing. I still think there will be a lot of people quite excited to see him as Prime Minister. The novelty soon wears off as we know, by the autumn, that novelty wont particularly be there. But now he is writing that wave, he can turn up, it looks fresh and exciting, i will do this, this and this, and people right now are going, 0k. This, and people right now are going, 0k. But if this, and people right now are going, ok. But if there is a success following a failure, the last few months of the last government, nothing was happening, and now you have a bit of energy. Government, nothing was happening, and now you have a bit of energylj and now you have a bit of energy. thought with Whaley Bridge, if theresa may had turned up there it would not have got the amount of coverage, but boris turned up as the new Prime Minister and there is a lot of coverage, he has a can do sort of person, and just because he isa sort of person, and just because he is a new face and people are ready to give him a percentage of people i should say, i ready to give him a chance. If you cant make these big promises in your first week, when can you . In the times this morning we have a story about meghan has found a pet project, a shaggy dog story. It has been suggested she might follow, it is a world make oral tradition to write childrens stories. Sarah ferguson, itsjust that meghan will write a childrens story about her dogs. I think the sort of coverage that meghan gets, there is a good chance that critics might not be entirely kind, it is a risky strategy, but. Ithought might not be entirely kind, it is a risky strategy, but. I thought she was writing vogue . That was last week. This is moving on. Quite a hostile reception to the guest editorship of vogue, people are quite critical. I think she is damned if you do, damned if you dont at the moment, she has put herself out there that they will be people firing at her. If they stay closed off they will be seen as being unapproachable and pompous, so it isa being unapproachable and pompous, so it is a very difficult balance to make work, i dont know, but a childrens story, the critics will have their knives out almost inevitably. It is funny, making jokes about comedy, we are so divided as a population that one mans funny joke would divided as a population that one mans funnyjoke would be another members may consult, probably. This is about the edinburgh friend which is about the edinburgh friend which is now going, and comedians now debating about whether it is a good idea, a lot of comedians are on the left side of politics, and so they naturally would go at nigel s garage, go it borisjohnson, go at jacob rees mogg, but they are rightly questioning whether an audience really wants that, do audiences really want to be preached at, the country is divided down the middle, it is a risky strategy. With comedians, if you think he or she is coming at you with a political agenda and really it is, therefore you should vote thejeremy corbyn lesion vote for borisjohnson, i think it makes you suspicious of them, comedy tends to be where people are removed from it all and can mock from the outside the assumption the audience will be entered in with them politically is dangerous, isnt it . There was a p pa re ntly dangerous, isnt it . There was apparently one awkward incident where anyone who had been a brexit photo, they dared them to put our hands and one man put up his hand. You look at the festival programme, there is quite a lot of brexit stuff in there. And not least, john boko has a show john bercow. In there. And not least, john boko has a show john bercow. Fresh from the commons, speaking on his effo rts from the commons, speaking on his efforts to bring order to politics. I will be sure to get a booking in for that one. 0k, in the mail on sunday, beckham 5 snob, he decides he is going into pop. The article is about who is going to manage him, the next generation of brand beckham is moving out pace, and it sounds like within the next year or so, young cruzs pop star career will start going, people were very cruel about his mothers actual singing talents, but she has gone on to do very well, but they insist that cruz has a genuine talent, he might have a good right foot but apparently it is music. All parents think their kids are gifted in some way, and often it is just kids are gifted in some way, and often it isjust not. Ok, thats all, ijust have one quick one. Lets have one quick one. Trinny and susanna blamed for starting the rise of tv rudeness. It is a university studying, that there show about how to address properly was the advent of being rude and disparaging about members of the public, and the idea that you have these tv high priests like lord sugar Gordon Ramsay yelling and screaming, that was the template, i dont know about blaming trinny and susanna, but that sort of tv is now the mainstream. Whether it is baking bread or singing, it has been 20 years and we had us used to it now. But interestingly you look at Something Like bake off, which has been really successful, so maybe thatis has been really successful, so maybe that is a move against this kind of aggressive. I think so, yeah. While this was a rubbish papers laughs . We will see later. Stay with us, we have the headlines coming up. Hello, this is breakfast with Christian Fraser and nina warhurst. Good morning, heres a summary of todays main stories from bbc news. At least 20 people have been killed and another 26 injured in the latest mass shooting in the united states. The massacre happened in a mall in the city of el paso in texas, where many families were out shopping. A 21 year old man has been arrested and police are looking into whether he deliberately targeted the hispanic community. Disgusting, intolerable, not texan. We are going to aggressively prosecuted both as capital murder, but also as a hate crime, which is exactly what it appears to be without having seen all of the evidence yet. Another 55 homes have been evacuated near a dam in derbyshire which is in danger of collapsing. Police say its because more heavy rain is forecast. 1,500 residents have already left their homes and Emergency Services are working round the clock to shore up the structure, but the risk of collapse remains at a critical level. 0ur priority has always been to pump as much water out of the dam as possible, because every bit of water we ta ke possible, because every bit of water we take out reduces the risk of the dam failing. So, we now know we have taken around dam failing. So, we now know we have ta ken around 35 dam failing. So, we now know we have taken around 35 of the contents of the dam out now, and we are aiming to get down to around 25 where we think it is out of safe level. Throughout the night we have concentrated efforts on making sure all the pumps are at full capacity, meaning as the water level drops the dam doesnt come down with straight sides, so we need to keep relocating the pumps further and further into the pumps further and further into the dam to make sure they are operating as efficiently as possible. More talks are planned today to try and stop a strike at heathrow by engineers, firefighters and security staff. 177 flights have already been cancelled on monday and tuesday after a union vote rejected a pay offer. Heathrow has not said which flights will be cancelled, and said passengers should check with their airlines to see if they are affected. Borisjohnson has announced extra funding for nhs hospitals in england. The one off payment of £1. 8 billion will go towards new equipment and upgrades to 20 hospitals. Writing in the sunday times, mrjohnson said he was determined to deliver the promises of the Brexit Referendum Campaign and increase nhs spending. 60 firearms have been found hidden in a car arriving in doverfrom calais. A french inventor is hoping to cross the English Channel this morning on a jet powered hoverboard. Here he is taking off just a few minutes ago. Its Franky Zapatas second attempt to cross the 20 mile stretch of water. He tried it last month but fell into the sea when he failed to land on a refuelling platform. It is brave, isnt it . Oh good balance is that it . There is a helicopter following balance is that it . There is a helicopterfollowing him, balance is that it . There is a helicopter following him, perhaps, as well, because last time he missed the refuelling stop. Is it cheating stopping to refuel . No, as long as you are quick. If they have a record to break, you dont want to be spending time doing that. I assume he was going over the horizon, and not just that. I assume he was going over the horizon, and notjust disappearing into the sea if he stops too long to refuel, he has no chance to make the record. An important morning session at the cricket. How do you solve a problem like Stephen Smith . He is potentially the weakest thorn in englands side. We have only had three days and he seems pretty much unstoppable. He is once again there and stopping england from having any kind of ascendancy in that first test. Itll be an intriguing morning session on day four of the first ashes test at edgbaston with australia leading by 34 runs with three second wickets down. And what england would give for the fourth to be steve smith. 0ur Sports Correspondent joe wilson has more. Edgbaston saturday. Dress code optional. But try to be eccentric. Some of them made you think why . , and others, how . But even on fancy dress day, it is still about cricket. No ashes without fire and no england without burns. Yes, he was back. Stretch, refocus, and try to find inspiration again. It took a sharp catch from the australian wicket keeper to finally get rid of rory burns, but his 133 was an immense personal contribution. Who would add to it . Batting suddenly seemed baffling. Chris woakes attacked. In the context of the match, as england built a lead, this shot seemed almost worth more than six. Nice try in the stands. Crowd fully engaged, suggesting david warner, former ball tamperer, had sandpaper with him. Empty pockets, he showed them. The crowd was loud enough even for a passerby to hear, as england bowled, 90 runs ahead. David warner tried not to hit this one but on englands review, there was the evidence, it brushed the bat. He was out. Farewell, old friend. England took two more wickets, moeen ali struck, then ben stokes got another one. The match was moving, like an inflatable president pursued by mexicans, very edgbaston. Steve smith withstood everything. Medical check 0k. Australia 34 ahead and ready for more. 0bviously steve is a very good player, and we will try to get him out, but when you get a new batsmen at the crease you attack them as much as possible. That is when you are most vulnerable. We saw that in the first innings, built a pressure at the other end and put pressure on the other matters, at the other end and put pressure on the other batters, and we will try to do that again. We will certainly be looking to get steve out if we can. Red bulls Max Verstappen will start a formula one race from pole for the first time at the hungarian grand prix later. Despite seven race wins its taken the dutchman until his fifth season in the sport to start a race from the front. He broke the track record in hungary and will start ahead of the mercedes pair of Valteri Bottas and championship leader lewis hamilton. Englands bronte law and charley hull remain in contention going into the final day of the womens british open at woburn. But defending champion georgia halls 74 leaves her 10 behind the lead. Hull though recovered from dropping shots early with four birdies on her back 9 for a round of 70. While law is still to drop a shot at this years event. Both are tied for seventh place, on nine under, thats five shots behind the leader who is the 20 year old Hinako Shibuno from japan, shes playing in herfirst major championship. Just going to go out and have fun. Just going to have fun, another day at the office, and pretend i am out there with my friends playing golf. I will make as many birdies as possible, i am hitting the ball, creating chances, there is no reason why i cant go out and create a really low number. Rangers start their scottish Premiership Campaign later when they face kilmarnock. Theyre looking to stop celtic winning a ninth league title this season. And theyve already got some catching up to do as far as goal difference is concerned. Yesterday neil lennons side started their defence with a 7 0 win against stjohnstone. Ryan christie hit a hat trick. Elsewhere there were wins for hibernian and ross county. Fulham say they will take the strongest possible action after their defender Cyrus Christie claimed his sister was hit and racially abused by fans during their defeat at barnsley. Christie posted on social media after the game to condemn the fans behaviour saying regardless how you felt about the result your actions are shameful. Fulham have launched an investigation into what happened. That story emerged after fulhams 1 0 defeat to barnsley on the opening day of the English Football League season. Fulham of course were relegated from the premier League Last Year while barnsley were promoted from league one. Luke thomas scored barnsleys winner. Full details of yesterdays results are over on the bbc sport website. The curtain raiser for next weeks premier League Season is at wembley this afternoon when liverpool take on Manchester City in the community shield. Its the first of seven potential trophies liverpool could win this season, but its fair to say their manager isnt getting particularly excited. We have to be ready to win, that is nice from a promotional point of view, but in the end we will not do a parade afterwards. The rugby Football League and super league say theyre appalled by clashes between catala ns dragons and warrington wolves fans towards the end of their match in france yesterday. Tempers flared on the field and off it with around ten minutes of the game to go, two warrington players and one from catalans were sent off after a brawl. There were also disturbing scenes in the crowd as fans then clashed in the stands. Both clubs have condemned the incident. The match itself saw catalans beat warrington by 30 10, meaning st helens win the League Leaders shield. There was a dramatic finish to the ridelondon womens classique in central london. Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes won the race after her compatriot, kirsten wild, veered from her sprinting line in the closing metres, causing a huge crash that brought down half the peloton. Wild came through on the inside to win, but after a review she was penalised for her sudden change of direction. There was disappointment for britains alice barnes, who finished more than three minutes behind so it seems riding a bicycle seems perilous enough, but on a motorbike you dont even need anyone knocking you off. This is South African rider steven 0dendaal being thrown off his bike. He somehow managed to keep control, keeping it upright, and eventually bringing his bike to a standstill. It was during qualifying for the moto2 czech grand prix. In slow motion it is difficult to gauge how fast he was going, but he somehow managed to keep himself and the bike in that situation. It is like the modern version of a wrangling for cowboys. He managed to keep that under control like quite the stallion as it was rocking and rolling very nifty. As he was dancing next to the bike he was pulling the break. This is my way of qualifying for pole position, i will do it without using my bike a unique approach 100 Business Leaders have written to the Prime Minister, to call for devolution across the whole of the north of england. Theyre urging Boris Johnson to show his commitment to the so called Northern Powerhouse by devolving powers currently held in whitehall to mayors and local leaders. Lets discuss this with the director of the Northern Powerhouse partnership, henri murson, who joins us now. This is something that people dont necessarily find tangible. Talk us through some of the advantages we have seen so far. If you look at here in greater manchester, where andy burnham is the mayor, it has made real changes to peoples lives. It means they are responding to problems that are locally unique, like sorting out the bus services so we can get buses to run he like they do in london. You look at someone like Steve Rotheram in liverpool, who has brought in concessionary travel to get people to their first jobs and get a start in life. Without that you dont have the ability to make those decisions. We could give more powers to all of the councils in the north, and two areas that come together, and that is a positive thing. But in larger cities and bigger areas, i positive thing. But in larger cities and biggerareas, ithink positive thing. But in larger cities and bigger areas, i think having a single, identifiable individual has made a big difference, which is why a place like sheffield, where it hasnt maybe got started as well, with people involved like the mayor, dan jarvis, we with people involved like the mayor, danjarvis, we hope we can get semi immediate areas forward, and there will be places like cheshire, where they can come forward as well. Will be places like cheshire, where they can come forward as well. know George Osborne is the chair of your partnership, and many think that we have been at a standstill since we have discovered been discussing brexit. Do you think this can makea discussing brexit. Do you think this can make a difference . discussing brexit. Do you think this can make a difference . I think we will see a big difference. Is your priority hs three across or hs2 coming north . I think we would say you need both. The risk is that people forget that this structure can be used for two things. If you wa nt to can be used for two things. If you want to build some of those elements of hs2, they help you get from whole to liverpool, or from of hs2, they help you get from whole to liverpool, orfrom Manchester Airport after to enable people to access that, which is kind of the heathrow of the north, but at the moment is only accessible to people who live in the north west. This is not a personal comment on theresa may, but i think her approach was lacklustre at best. A few days into a new premiership, the first major policy speech given by pm outside of london and the north, i think it sent a real message. He was wearing his little blue badge, just as i am, andi his little blue badge, just as i am, and i think to see the same level of commitment in the same room where George Osborne first started the Northern Powerhouse, we are now looking at delivery. And there were important people in the room who we re important people in the room who were talking and working the same way that George Osborne did in government. We need the mayors and Civic Leaders here in yorkshire in the north east pushing forward. But we need someone to pick up the phone too, and we need someone to pick up the phone too, and i think for the first time not only is someone listening in whitehall for the first time in three years, but there is also someone picking the phone up to us. There is also the question about, what does the country do after brexit . Just quickly, that feels like a step forward with the new pm. Who has signed this letter and what exactly a re who has signed this letter and what exactly are they calling for . You have significant businesses like chris 0glesby, siemens, and you also have the chamber of commerce in yorkshire and over in lancashire, who represent small manufacturing businesses. So it is the whole range. They are saying it is not good enough that half of the north has devolution and half of it doesnt. We need to see devolution 100, 100 doesnt. We need to see devolution 100,100 business doesnt. We need to see devolution 100, 100 Business People saying in our case we want 100 devolution. It is more powers to people like andy doing an amazing job already over areas like skills, where we could do more if we had a bit more of the funds that is already being spent by whitehall being spent locally, we could also do a betterjob of spending it, to be blunt. We also need other places not being left behind. When you go up to lancashire and down to other places in Northern England, they need the same investment as big cities are getting. If you have smaller places that might have lots of factories up in the Nuclear Sector in cumbria, for instance, they need the same leadership that andy is showing here in manchester, and i think Boris Johnson wants to give them that, he just needs to get on and do it. Heres susan with a look at this mornings weather. Good morning, weather watchers are busy this morning, this little fellow down here may be rory the dog. Further west across wales there isa dog. Further west across wales there is a lot of low cloud, here is our recent image from wales, and cloud is now pushing its way eastwards, some writers guys in the west. Just about anywhere across the uk there is the risk of a shower today, particularly so up in the north midlands, northwards. Low pressure to thank for this scenario, bands of showers, spells of sunshine in between times, but some of the downpours are pretty happy, certainly the ones we have seen pushing into scotland through the morning have been a couple of inches of rain, across the south west of scotla nd of rain, across the south west of scotland and a couple of hours. More showers to come this morning, elsewhere pretty quiet, but then in the afternoon we start to see things getting lively as the sun inject some warmth, and energy into the atmosphere, as showers turn more potent across Northern England and central and southern scotland. Isolated risk further south, perhaps particularly for the moors than the south west, the met office is concerned primarily with areas from the north midlands through into central and southern scotland, the thunderstorm through the afternoon, and into the evening. In fact the evening could bring us some of the worst of the weather, with more intense showers gradually drifting offshore through these goes from Northern England as the evening pans out, some still lingering to scotland, and by then another band of thunderstorms arriving into Northern Ireland. They will then start to put across into southern scotla nd start to put across into southern scotland and Northern England as the light scotland and Northern England as the light was on. More cloud and some night wears on. More cloud and some rainfor night wears on. More cloud and some rain for South West Wales at end of the night as well. Quite a muggy night, quite cloudy first thing on monday towards the west, thanks to a frontal band embedded in this area of low pressure. Showers across the southern half of the uk will be more prolific in the morning and then work away from the afternoon, allowing more sunshine, a fresh affair with a westerly breeze whereas the showers were scotland tend to stall and they will still be a few around the Northern Ireland as well. 21 22 just about covering it. Tuesday we are still going, you can make out the circular shape, here is the area of low pressure, more showers swelling through, again could see anywhere sing some rain on tuesday, but still the northern half of the uk looking like the primary target sto p of the uk looking like the primary target stop as the week pans out the showers just keep coming, it is august and certainly not a summary forecast, average looking temperatures and some mixed weather, but the potential for a very wet weekend next weekend. Not a great outlook. 0h, oh, thank you Franky Zapata the motherboard man has landed in calais. Here he is. Hover board. It must have been a really quick pitstop. He was only about 30 minutes tops. Not even half an hour. This is him coming in, and he. He missed the refuelling stop, didnt e. It looks like one of those segways. Doesnt it. As far as we know it was a very safe landing. The question is now whether he can stock up question is now whether he can stock up on french wine and then get back over. We do think it is calais, but it could be plymouth. It could be sa lfo rd time now on breakfast for the travel show. We start in Northern Ireland, in county down, because here, in places once rarely visited, something unexpected is happening. Now, people are coming from across the world and its all because of one television programme. Game of thrones. One of the biggest in history. In the fantasy series, of which the eighth and final season concluded this year, different houses battle to claim one ultimate throne. It was here in remote locations south of the busy capital of belfast that many of the programmes most iconic scenes were filmed. And where some of its cast can still be found. Ok, so i have a confession i am a giant game of thrones geek. And i am super excited, because this place has to be top of the list for any true super fan. Welcome to castle ward, or to what many tv viewers will know as winterfell. And well, when in winterfell. Arrrgh evening my lady, where do you hail from . From london. London. And which house do you represent . 0h. House of larwood. House of larwood, never heard of them, sounds like something the nights watch would have dragged in. I believe you are here to learn how to do archery. I need people to hunt or to fight. Are you up to the task . I hope so. I hope so too, otherwise there is a penalty. 0h, a beheading. That seems measured. Absolutely, because you are no good to me here at winterfell if you cant hunt and you cant fight. I will do my best. In the series, no character is safe from a grisly end, so it never hurts to know what you are doing with a bow and arrow. Select your arrows by the tip, never by the feathers and never further down the shaft. Think of it coming out of a quiver, Three Fingers on the drawing string and then draw back. So that it brings to your right eye. Loose all right. I hit the target your first arrow ever and you hit the target. 0k. Archer ready. Draw hold. Loose look at that. Yes well done. So this place used to be a farm and yet now it is a huge tourist attraction. How did that happen . We are where game of thrones started, so it is a Perfect Place to start your journey, to go on and do some of the other sites that are around. Yes, they have gone off to croatia, yes, they have gone off to iceland, yes, they have gone off to morocco and so on, and thats fine, but most of it is shot here. And it has turned into what we now know as screen tours, something we have never had before. Yes we have the giants causeway, a unesco World Heritage site and it is beautiful, and all that, but people used to go there and there alone, and then they would take off. Now they come to see many other parts of our province. And well be finding out more about these sites later in the programme. But first we had across the irish sea to englands lake district, where cat moh reports. Here in the uks Biggest National park, in the mountainous rugged lake district, you will find the green and beautiful landscapes this country is known for. But theres also something else. Scars to the mountainsides tell a story of a defining industrial era for the country and the communities in this region. At the uks last working slate mine, travellers can come to walk in the treacherous footsteps miners used to take up the mountain. They call it the via ferrata. But first i wanted to see what life was like for these miners working deep within the network of mining tiles before modern machinery transformed the practice of extracting the slate. Its a bit low down here. Wow look at this its an absolutely amazing space. I can hear my voice echoing off the rocks. It represents a huge area where they found an off a lot of good rock, and it also represents some 11 miles of tunnels and caverns. Paint a picture for me of what it would have been like back in its heyday. When was that . Back in its heyday, after the First World War when production was getting going again, and it built up to some 2000 tons of roofing slate produced per year. And that would have been in places like this, lit by early carbide lamps, which is the next generation of lamp after using just candlelight, we would have the dust of the rock in their lungs, and they always have the potential, when you are working the rock, for it to come down onto your head which would have been covered in a cloth cap. Back out of the mine, it is time to head up to the via ferrata. So the old miners route starts way over here, and the only way to get there is on this narrow bridge. My mouth has suddenly gone dry. Here we go. This is where it gets interesting. You are doing really well. 0k. How high are we . We are 3000 feet above sea level, approximately. We are quite high up from the road, just the fact that the cars are like micro machines from here. Yeah, these cars look tiny. Probably isnt the best conversation to be having while we go over this. At over 150 metres, this bridge is the longest of its kind in britain, and as i creep my way across, i could not be more aware of every remaining step to go. Ok, i can do this, doing my best ballet feet. 0h just keep breathing. 0k, all right. This is really hard. Oh gosh. With the wind lurching the bridge from side to side, i have to be so careful when i put my feet. Oh my gosh this wind ahh if i actually stop and think about it, the view is, its amazing up here. But to be honest, i havent really been concentrating on the view so much as my feet and my arms so i dont fall into the view. Actually it is really quite long. Now i can appreciate the view. So pretty well done. Woohoo solid Ground Safety i would jump for joy but it is a bit windy still. Well done we did it while cat catches her breath, im back in county down. Its amazing as were walking through here how many people are wearing the big capes for game of thrones, clearly here because game of thrones was filmed here. Its such a beautiful area. Did you come to this part of the world because of game of thrones . Yeah, idid. I mean, Northern Ireland is a fascinating country. Lots of history. But i think if not for game of thrones are probably would not have come all this way. So really are you like a big fan . On a scale of one to ten, like an 11. Im 24, travelling alone, my father grew up during the troubles so he thought it was absolutely insane. But he has seen all my photos and it has been a great trip. For three decades, up until 1998, Northern Ireland endured a violent and deadly conflict known as the troubles. Since then, a kind of dark tourism exploring the locations and rules murals of the conflict has been popular here. But for some local people there is now a more positive story to tell about what their country has to offer. So here we have summer, which is bran starks direwolf. Now, youre going to go meet him later on
