Hello and welcome to bbc news. The attorney general in the us state of texas says that between 15 20 people have been killed in a gun attack on a Shopping Centre in city of el paso. Police have arrested the suspected gunman described as a white male in his twenties but not yet established a motive for the attack. He has been named by us media as patrick crusius. Our north america correspondent Chris Buckler has been following developments. Oh, my god. Families were out shopping on a saturday morning when they were advised to run. Run, run, run. Inside the mall in el paso, armed officers moved in, responding to another report in america of an active shooter. Its believed somewhere in the region of 20 people have been shot, however its not clear how many have been killed. This is a large crime scene, a large area, so we are systematically going through it and making sure that anybody in the area number one, were ruling out that no one is a suspect and were also making sure that those people who were separated or hurt are getting the care that they need. Its claimed the government started his attack in the car park of the Shopping Centre before continuing it inside a walmart supermarket. Just days ago, two of the companys staff were shot dead in another of its stores in mississippi, and days before that a gunman fired at people at a Food Festival in northern california. These latest deaths will again raise concerns about how easy it is to buy guns in america. El paso is the strongest place in the world. This communitys going to come together. Im going back there right now to be with my family and to be with my hometown. In a tweet, President Trump said the reports from el paso were very bad and that many had been killed, leaving another city grieving and asking if all of this could have been avoided with tighter restrictions on guns. That was Chris Buckler there. Sergeant robert gomez is from the El Paso Police department. He has been providing regular updates on the sitation. Heres a little of what he said about 90 minutes ago. We do have one person in custody, i can confirm that it is a white male in his 20s. I dont have any other information on that. It will be released at a later time but thats the information we have right now. The estimates of the shoppers at the walmart were between i,000 3,000 with a hundred employees present. It is back to school and walmart was at capacity when the shootings occurred. We have secured walmart and we have secured cielo vista mall, we dont feel theres a threat to the public or that there are any other shooters at this time. As we were from the last conference, we are transitioning into the criminal investigation side. We have the location locked down and we have started our criminal investigation to find out exactly what took place. I can confirm there have been fatalities, i cannot confirm how many. There have been injuries. There were several injuries. I dont have those numbers as of right now. The delay with the injuries and the fatalities, is that we cant account for anyone who transported themselves, so our numbers will be a little delayed. Once we have that information we will definitely make it available to all. That is the latest from the Police Department. Lets get the lastest from peter bowes whos in los angeles. Peter, were learning more now about man who was arrested . Yes. More details are emerging. We know this through cvs our broadcasting partners in the us, that the suspect, now in custody is a white man, 21 years old cold patrick crusius. He is the only suspect as we have just been hearing crusius. He is the only suspect as we havejust been hearing called. There were reports that possibly a second or third person were involved, so far authorities havent been able to confirm that. Indeed, those reports came from eyewitnesses at the scene very early on into this. So the moment one person in custody, we understand 19 people have been killed. Others are in hospitals. The ages of those injured range from four months to senior citizens. Some people in hospital receiving treatment right now are said to be in a very serious or indeed critical condition. Yeah, as we wait for more details, we will bring them, no doubt. Peter, this incident always begs questions about gun control, access to guns and this time will be no different. Yes. And were seeing that already. Sometimes in cases like this people say that the only in the early hours, its too early to talk about gun control. There is no such reluctance this time. We are hearing from potential president ial candidates, at least the democrats vying to lead their party to fight donald trump next year, we have heard from beto orourke, the democrat from taxes, he is from el paso. He was actually campaigning from texas, when he heard the news of this the first thing he did was call his wife to make sure she and her family were 0k. He make sure she and her family were ok. He is travelling back to el paso 110w. Ok. He is travelling back to el paso now. He is giving a speech to a crowd and he said the shootings have shattered any illusion that gun reform will come of its own accord in the us. Another one of the democrats vying to lead the party, julia castro, julian castro, a former member of president obamas candidate, he was the housing secretary, he said what this country needs our gunma secretary, he said what this country needs oui gunma are secretary, he said what this country needs our gunma are red flag laws, to identify people who could bea laws, to identify people who could be a threat and get the guns out of the hands of those people. But we have had this time and time again. The thing that frustrates so many people is that ultimately nothing seems to change because there isnt a political consensus stop it would need agreements from politicians on both sides of the aisle to get significant legislation through. And that just doesnt significant legislation through. And thatjust doesnt happen. 0k. Thank you peter in los angeles. I asked a member of kt ep radio. Pasois i asked a member of kt ep radio. Paso is supposed to be a safe city. One of the top five or top ten safest cities in the United States and then when this happened, my goodness, gracious. The air has come out of the balloon and people dont know what to make out of this whole thing. Give us an idea for people who dont know the area, what kind of area is it . Whats the Shopping Mall like, how big is the area, what would people have been doing . The entire area affected was roughly about a mile and a half wide, about one mile long, there is a set of apartment complexes north of cielo vista mall that have about maybe 500 housing units, all single families and Single Parents with children. There is a series of schools around the area. Grade schools there, there are isa the area. Grade schools there, there are is a park that has been converted to a transit centre. That area is now closed off to the regular transit place. There is 122 jobs inside the Shopping Mall that are now closed. The mole usually has about 5 6000 people at any time. The walmart usually has 3000 people at any the walmart usually has 3000 people atany time the walmart usually has 3000 people at any time during their shopping day. And their subsequent area, same type of thing. So for this place to be that crowded and for this gunmen allegedly to come in and just open fire willy nilly doesnt really make a whole lot of sense to a whole lot of people. And we are expecting an update from authorities at about half past the hour. So please press conference and about 20 minutes time of cause and we will bring that you want bbc world news. Discussions between management and unions ended today without agreement. More than 150 flights scheduled for monday and tuesday have already cancelled. Heres our business correspondent, katy austin. At heathrow, its peak holiday getaway season but a possible strike by airport staff, such as security guards and engineers, has left some peoples plans up in the air. This is really stressful. Its a lot of money. Things like the taxi to the airport is costing me money. And i dont itsjust the stress of the unknown. I dont know whats going on and no ones giving me the answers. Its my first real holiday with my boyfriend. And whats meant to be a relaxing endeavour is becoming more and more stressful. If a strike does happen, passengers are being warned to expect long queues to get through security and are being told to allow extra time. But not everyone will be able to fly as planned. Heathrow has already taken the decision to cancel dozens of flights departing here on both monday and tuesday. Heathrow has said it can run the airport safely if the strikes go ahead, and that those affected by cancellations will be booked onto other services or get refunds from their airlines. Analysts say passengers are unlikely to get any other compensation. If there are delays that changes the game somewhat and they will be entitled to some compensation, like if they were stuck at the airport overnight they should get hotel compensation. But airlines are not liable for a circumstance beyond their control like this. Strikes early next week and later this month could be prevented if airport managers and unite can agree a pay deal. Union members have rejected heathrows latest offer. With time running out, theres no sign side is ready to back down. Katie austin, bbc news, at heathrow. Russian Authorities Say theyve succeeded in slowing the wildfires raging in siberia and plan to extend their efforts into more remote regions today. Almost 40,000 Square Kilometres of forest land have been affected, and smoke from the blazes has drifted to alaska and parts of canada. Our moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg has travelled to the remote irkutsk region of siberia, and he sent this report. Siberia is burning and we went to see how. Forestry workers agreed to show us how they are fighting the fires. With limited resources, theyre trying their best, struggling to make sure the threat here is contained. But thats almost impossible. In this siberian forest i saw new fires appearing out of nowhere. And the results can be devastating. Well, this is where the fairytale russian forest has been reduced to a wasteland. The fire has caused a lot of damage here. And as you can see, caused a lot of damage here. And as ou can see its caused a lot of damage here. And as you can see, its still smouldering. And part of the problem is deadwood, dry would like this, because even if you drop a0 tons of water from a military plane up there, if its still burning inside here, if there are still flames, then that is going to continue. Today, russia said that 10,000 people are fighting the siberian fires. The Emergency Services and the army are involved. And so is a forester im out here from a local village. Met here. Weve got to keep the situation under control, he says, weve got to keep putting out fires. He told me that sometimes in siberia forest fires burn until the snow falls. Russia may have to let nature takes its course. Steve rosenberg, bbc news, siberia. Stay with us on bbc news. This is bbc news. The latest headlines its being reported that at least 19 people have died after a shooting at a Shopping Centre in the texas city of el paso. One man is in custody. Riot police have fired tear gas to disperse the pro democracy crowd in hong kong, as Anti Government protests continue for the ninth consecutive weekend. More than 600 people have been arrested in moscow during an unauthorised rally, protesting against opposition candidates being barred from standing in local elections. Its the second weekend of mass demonstrations, with the Opposition Leader lyubov sobol, being arrested even before she reached the rally. Heres our correspondent sarah rainsford. Lyu bov lyubov sobol is now being detained by police, being dragged away by two riot police and another two officers. She is demanding to know the places for her arrest. They are dragging her away towards a minibus. A minibus which hasjust dragging her away towards a minibus. A minibus which has just driven dragging her away towards a minibus. A minibus which hasjust driven up. So thats it. Lyubov sobol had just tapped out of her headquarters here, she was heading tojoin tapped out of her headquarters here, she was heading to join the protest and riot police came and detained her. She has been taken off in an unmarked minibus, presumably into custody now. So the police have now closed off the entire boulevard, which is where the saturday style, this protest was supposed to take place. They are stopping people entering the area and they have been clearing people out, evenjust people strolling with their dogs, a couple of middle aged or elderly ladies are sitting on a bench. Everyone has been cleared out until the area is closed. We are people. We have our rights. We are citizens of the country. We pay our taxes. We need our representation. They deny us need our representation. They deny us all these rates for a long time. So one by one police are picking off protesters. They a re so one by one police are picking off protesters. They are literally lifting them from the floor and taking them into the waiting police buses here. Theres women. Ive seen young man and they have seen one elderly woman as well being dragged away by police. Theres a huge number of police here today. The riot police out in great force. And all this at the moment seems to be at the point of an easy stand. The police in great numbers, the protesters fewer. Hundreds have been detained already. So far we havent seen detained already. So far we havent seen the kind of violence that happened last saturday. But it is quite clear from what we have seen that this protest is far from over. People here have their demands, they say they want to be represented in a local parliament. The police, though, are quite adamant that they are going to clear these streets. Sarah rainsford there. The irish Prime Minister leo varadkar has taken part in belfasts pride parade. He joined tens of thousands of people at the annual event. As well as a celebration the parade aimed to highlight that, unlike the rest of the uk, gay people cannot get married in Northern Ireland. Clodagh rice reports. Pride has been celebrated in belfast for more than 20 years, but this is the first time the rainbow flag has flown at city hall to mark the event. Its the first year, and i dont think it will be the last year. I think that everybody in this city must feel that they are part of the city. And i think city council has sent a very powerful message today that if 60,000 70,000 people parade through our city, they do so under the pride flag for the very first time. Its poignant because we celebrate the 50th anniversary of stonewall. In another first, the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar marched in the parade, and it was also the first time bbc pride has marched in Northern Ireland. Well, despite the rain, organisers are hoping this will be the biggest ever turnout for belfast pride, with tens of thousands of people expected to take part. And it certainly seems like the rain isnt dampening anyones spirits. Its so fun. You feel like a big community. Its, like, where everyone comes together. Its class. Its the best way to celebrate everyone. I was expecting, like, just a couple of flags and, like, people dancing, but not this. Like, theres too many people here. It gets bigger every year. Ive noticed more straight people come. It gives you hope for the future, if you know what i mean. It makes you tear up a wee bit. Theres my dad behind behind me, my husband, my children, our friends are in the parade. We believe that love is love, and equalitys so important to us, so prides the best day. Spectators didnt let the weather rain on their parade. Clodagh rice, bbc news, belfast. It wont have any issues, especially for the take off. Unlike last time you have to be a little bit fatalistic. We did our work to the fullest a nd fatalistic. We did our work to the fullest and what happens in the air will or wont happen. Thats the way it is. Crossing the channel, no matter how you do it, has always ca ptu red matter how you do it, has always captured the imagination. Matthew webb was the first recorded person to swim between france and britain in 1875. Louis bleriot was the first to fly the channel in 1909. Franky za pata to fly the channel in 1909. Franky zapata had hoped to match that feat by hoverboard zapata had hoped to match that feat by hoverboa rd exactly zapata had hoped to match that feat by hoverboard exactly 110 years later, until his little accident midway. Translation we didnt really see it asa translation we didnt really see it as a failure. It was half a victory, because we made it halfway.
