And the first that some people knew that there was something wrong was when police were swarming on the scene to tell them to get down, protect their heads and try to get to safety. There are now confirmed reports by the local police that there are some fatalities. There aint his ages ranging from four months to senior citizens. Ranging from non life threatening injuries to critical injuries. It is still relatively early in this investigation. It is still an active police scene although the Authorities Say one person is in custody. Earlier there were reports of perhaps three people, that has not been confirmed at the moment. We know that police have beenin school. We know that police have been in the area and basically in lockdown. How big is the area, what kind of places this . This is one of those very typical american sprawling Shopping Malls. Its a large area, several major stores, and what is not clear is whether the shooting took place in just one building or was spread around this area. And that is the part of the investigation and that is why it is such a sensitive, difficult situation in these early minutes and hours after the shooting making the entire area safe. And then to conduct the investigation, speaking to people who were doing their shopping perhaps in different stores, trying to get back to their cars, the entire area sealed as a crime scene because they want to try to preserve evidence. This is a very large area including the mall and all the retail areas. We are going through making sure that anybody that sheltered in place that we get to them. We are also treating any persons that were injured in any form. So, this is a large crime scene, a large area. So, we are systematically going through it and making sure anybody in the area. Number one we are going out that there is a suspect, and we are too ensure that those people who were separated or hurt are getting the care that they need. Tragic to say the very least but yet u nfortu nately to say the very least but yet unfortunately at this point, there is far more what we dont know as to what we do know. We do know that one person is in custody. However speculation of the use of a long gun oi speculation of the use of a long gun or two, we do not know that to be confirmed at this point. Speculation that there may have been one shooter more than one shooter, we do not know. We know there are multiple victims and some who have passed away, we do not know how many. But at this point right now, what we do know is that the situation is contained, that police have given a clear with respect to the fact that they are not looking for another shooter and that the investigation has started with respect of the processing of that massive crime scene. The sequence of interviewing eyewitnesses and from the legal side, the securing of search wa rra nts side, the securing of search warrants for the suspects home or homes, vehicle or vehicles, devices, computers, phones, and any type of records they will need to go back to the very genesis of this particular incident. What are some of the challenges now with the next stage of the investigation or indeed actually securing the area and making sure people are accounted for . Because this appears to be a very large area. Its massive. Its a massive area. And this particular campus holds a variety of stores, an open mall with respect to the parking area, there are numerous buildings and stores that make up this particular complex. So as police have to go from building to building and individually search through those buildings to clear those buildings, its a mammoth undertaking at this point but all of it has to be done before they can finally close the crime scene. Paul, when we hear and see awful events like this unfolding, there is often confusion at the beginning isnt there. We were hearing of possible multiple gunmen. And then the most recent update from the police was that one suspect is in custody. How difficult is it to get the right information out at the right time when events are unfolding like this . Perhaps the most poignant question of the day. I have been doing this for almost a0 years now and i can tell you that obtaining information from witnesses is very difficult because people are traumatised. They are undergoing a massive adrenaline rush. So what they see and what they smell and what they hear looking at the same is seen is going to vary from person to person. Thats what i said so quickly and accurately at the genesis of this type of event, is imperative to be extremely judicious before bequeathing any time of information relative to the shooter, the amount that have been injured, etc. Because unfortunately, and againi injured, etc. Because unfortunately, and again i have done this forfour decades, that information is going to change until probably later today until we get a confirmation to local authorities as to the confirmation of how many shooters, how many people were involved, if theyre still looking at other people, how many people have passed, how many people have been physically transported to hospital. There are two banks actually and those two have been on lockdown as well as a precaution. Right across the street from that walmart is a sams club, one of their subsidiaries.
