As a man opens fire killing four people including two children. Informers will be shot, say signs in londonderry. Three months afterjournalist leera mckey was killed no one has been charged with her murder. And, up to his neck in water the dramatic resuce of a father who became trapped in the rocks on a norfolk beach. Borisjohnson has said he is very confident a new brexit deal can be reached with the eu. Speaking on his first trip to scotland as Prime Minister where leaving without an agreement is widely opposed mrjohnson said theresa mays Withdrawal Agreement was dead. But he insisted there was scope for a new plan, provided there was goodwill and common sense. After their meeting, first minister Nicola Sturgeon said she believed he was pursuing a dangerous path to no deal. Our scotland editor sarah smith reports. For Boris Johnson, coming here to the Scottish First minister official residence in edinburgh days after becoming Prime Minister is a capitally choreographed piece of diplomacy. It was universally popular. But borisjohnson meeting Nicola Sturgeon face to face will not help them to see eye to eye over brexit. Visiting a Vanguard Class Nuclear submarine on the clyde, borisjohnson wants the eu to know that he is ready for a battle. Despite supercharging no deal preparations, he is also saying he will go the extra mile to try to get the deal. It is absolutely right that we should go for a deal, and there is every chance that we can get a deal, and i think with goodwill and common sense, that is what we will achieve. Are the odds are still a million to one that we will. 7 provided there is common sense and goodwill on the part of our partners that is exactly where i would put it. Might matter any chance of a new deal brexit even any chance would not satisfy her, she says is catastrophic and should not be considered. This government and the path that it is pursuing i think is dangerous. It became clear to me that this government and the new Prime Minister has set the uk on an almost inevitable path to a no deal brexit, the position that it has taken, it makes it difficult to see how any deal could be struck with the eu and i think that would be catastrophic for scotland and the whole of the uk. The scottish tory leader and mrjohnson clashed over brexit three years ago and they still do not agree. She says she will not support no deal. They met again today. I said i wanted to see the same level of energy and vigour that is going into no deal planning going into trying to get a deal, i want to see the sort of shuttle diplomacy that is going to be required if we are going to see changes that can be brought back to the commons and i received the assurances that i was looking for. Borisjohnson has some fans in scotland. The snp are also delighted that he is now Prime Minister, convinced that he will inevitably increase the appetite for scottish independence. Sarah smith, bbc news, edinburgh. Our Political CorrespondentJonathan Blake joins us now from westminster. Basically borisjohnson basically Boris Johnson is basically borisjohnson is saying to the eu, lets do a new deal, we want to solve this and take the backstop out and do business, but he is also saying if he did not go that, i will walk away. The uk will lead at the end of october, nay. That is really concerning lots of people in scotla nd concerning lots of people in scotland not least at Nicola Sturgeon who lives in that building behind me. Her argument sturgeon who lives in that building behind me. Herargument this afternoon was she now thinks he is taking the uk almost inevitably on a quest to know deal because the eu would renegotiate and he said that ha rd would renegotiate and he said that hard deadline on the 31st of october. Now, you may say shes his political opponents that she will say that fairpoint but its interesting as well, there is a real concern in the Scottish Conservative Party and about mrjohnsons strategy. That tory scottish leader has made it clear she will not support him if he goes down that route meaning she could become one of those operatories shouting from the sidelines that we dont want to see the government take that policy on in see the government take that policy onina see the government take that policy on in a few weeks time. More conciliatory after that same they both agree on getting a new deal and something over that line and get it there pollen by how many times have we heard that line and get it through parliament by how many times have we heard back is not easier said than done. Meanwhile, the car maker vauxhall has warned of the impact brexit could have on around a thousand jobs at its Ellesmere Port factory in cheshire. The french owned Car Company Says it could move production out of the uk if brexit makes its business there unprofitable. The trade union, unite, accused the government of playing no Deal Roulette with the livelihoods of vauxhall workers. Our Business CorrespondentColletta Smith is there and sent this update. It was just four weeks ago they said they want to build it here but there is a . Hanging over that announcement because it was contingent on what every deal the uk government manages to secure. Today, we had had more flash on the implications of what that will actually mean. The plant at the moment is closed for two weeks for the planned annual summer shutdown, but this is not good news for the 1000 workers to come back to. Vauxhall, like much of the car industry have been warning about the implications of a no deal brexit for some time. But todays comments are the hardest punch yet. The boss says theyve a Southern European plant in mind to build the next generation of astra, if a no deal makes building them here at Ellesmere Port unprofitable. A load of preparation has already been done, but we are going to be stepping up that, reaching out to those sectors and businesses indeed that do feel vulnerable and will be more affected. Lets remember, the car sector has been affected by a range of other issues including the diesel situation and demand in china. The industry is certainly under pressure. Honda is closing its swindon site, ford are to close their bridgend plant and nissan are opting for more japanese production lines. Car manufacturing is a competitive business, there is always a fight for the next contract and everyone here on the wirral knows just how much is at stake. Its the kids and that, that i feel for because they are our next generation and if there is nothing here for us, then whats here for them . I think they are just going to use brexit as an excuse to close it. Its already going to close. That seems to be the opinion of a lot of people round here. Theres families involved, i would imagine itll have a big impact. It seems a shame that it should have to go. Its not only Ellesmere Port, you have the nissan factory, thats going to go. So where are we going to be . It is a worrying time. Jon has been an employee here all his working life. The lunacy of no brexit is a problem. If there no deal, on tariffs etc, but we stand ready. We stand ready as a union to make sure we do everything we can to maintain volume car production at this plan. It would be a huge blow to the community. The local mp says it feels like the government isnt on the side of the uk workforce. This comes off the back of the new Prime Minister appointing a very right wing cabinet, who are hell bent on leaving the eu without a deal. On the 31st of october it is a very clear warning to them that thats going to have dramatic consequences for this area. Around 80 of the finished astros are shipped from here across the sea to europe. And that makes this merseyside workforce more vulnerable than most. Colletta smith, bbc news, at Ellesmere Port. Professor Karel Williams is an automotive expert from Alliance ManchesterBusiness School and joins me now. Thank you forjoining us, how are jobs going to be affected if there isa jobs going to be affected if there is a no deal brexit then can we put a reliable figure on it . We cannot put an exact figure on it, but we do know that although people talk about an industry, its really an Assembly Plant we had in the uk. 55 of the components are imported and generally, notjust components are imported and generally, not just simply at that area, 80 of output is exported mainly to the eu. Therefore, any move outside the Single Market and the Customs Union is disruptive to just in time and if we have wto rules, thats10 just in time and if we have wto rules, thats 10 tariff on cars and 4. 5 components. Rules, thats 10 tariff on cars and 4. 596 components. Is there a big difference between a no deal brexit and have brexit with adl and that standstill a transition period in terms of number of jobs standstill a transition period in terms of number ofjobs not only directly by companies but knock on linkjobs that could be affected . Yes, i think there is a substantial difference in this case. I think its clear the industry very much needs a Frictionless Movement of components into the country and finished cars out of the country. If you lose that with a no deal brexit, then i think you would start to lose jobs and assembly factories and then you will lose that of the component factories, and that i think is probably a bigger issue because the really big issue is a piece start to lose volume and assemblies, models going elsewhere in factories closed, then the volume based component gets to be much smaller. Those in favour of a no deal brexit could say youre being pessimistic, we saw one person in the report saying the plant will closed and that using a brexit excuse. Well, the plant is in a difficult situation, and brexit is not the only problem that the industry faces. The case of the astro plant, then what we had is a plant which has run on a single shift and is only employing 1000 workers, but i think its fair to say it stands a good chance of getting the next model in 2020, if there isnt friction in the trade across the channel. If there isnt friction, i dont think its garrett fear mongering to say it simply a fa ct fear mongering to say it simply a fact that they will have to think about where he relocates. The Assembly Line is likely to be inside southern or eastern europe. When people like borisjohnson or dominic rob talk about some short term problems, if there is a no deal brexit, are we talking about an industry of jobs thatll brexit, are we talking about an industry ofjobs thatll be hit short term and recover or is there impact that long term . Short term and recover or is there impact that long term . short term and recover or is there impact that longterm . I think keeping is what models are switched, which factories closed and what the implications are for the volume base of components in the uk because broadly speaking, you would expect to have onejob broadly speaking, you would expect to have one job outside the car factory in everyjob in the car factory. But my worry is, that britain was quite an attractive location for car building in the 19805 location for car building in the 1980s for all kinds of Margaret Thatcher reasons. But if you look at europe and now its much more retracted to build cars in slovakia where you have a year of currency to Single Market and low wages. In a sense that factories we have are partly a hand overfrom sense that factories we have are partly a hand over from early location decisions and i worry that if we lose volume, its not going to be seen again. Professor, thank you for joining be seen again. Professor, thank you forjoining us. Lets speak now to jonathan, lets speak now tojonathan, just looking from where we are today and what we have seen, boris being booed as he arrived in scotland that voted largely to remain, slightly conflicting messages on a likely headed no deal brexit. Conflicting messages on a likely headed nodeal brexit. Yes, although its part of i think the same strategy, they may appear to be slightly at odds, but when you look at the overall picture, one thing thatis at the overall picture, one thing that is consistent is that any government minister you ask will say they dont want a no deal brexit and both michael dove and borisjohnson today saying its their name and intention to get a new brexit deal. But they are both clear that Withdrawal Agreement negotiated by therese and they must go, particularly the backstop part, and a new agreement must be reached. If thatis a new agreement must be reached. If that is not the case, government is going to work on the assumption that its not going to happen and they must prepare for a no deal brexit, so must prepare for a no deal brexit, so while borisjohnson said today its not his assumption there will bea its not his assumption there will be a no deal brexit, he did say that michael grove was right to prepare for that eventuality and that is what the government is doing because remember its not just what the government is doing because remember its notjust a case that believing that its right to prepare the country for the eventuality of no deal brexit and three months time, they also strategy and attempt to convince the eu that the uk is willing and ready to do that. In the hope that they will decide to offer concessions. And there is a cost, financially not only for government but for industries and companies all over that country and preparing for a no deal brexit. As the government got any political theories about that especially coming to the holiday period, net claiming they can achieve a lot. Yes government has not held back and spending money, £2 billion and more for funding allocated specifically to planning for a negative brexit, and the idea to share from the chancellor later this week at about extra funding for Government Departments to prepare for leaving that bad adl, something to the tune an extra £1 billion for that specific purpose, so it does come at a cost, Boris Johnson specific purpose, so it does come at a cost, borisjohnson will argue that leaving the eu even on the basis without adl would allow the uk to prosper economically in the future, there are plenty of people who say that isnt the case, nevertheless its costing not only government money to businesses across the uk money to prepare and put in place Contingency Planning for that eventuality and some may argue that cbi had done today, not enough assistance and guidance has been getting for a government to this plaint to get businesses and the country as a whole ready for that outcome. Giant didnt really know if government is talking to other european leaders . Boris johnson has had brief conversations with president macron, chancellor merkel and others, he has not spoken to the irish Prime Minister sophia, as far as know. And he seems Prime Minister as we know. He seems to not want to rush into anything, he appears to be holding off on that, he has no plans as far as we know to jet set around the european capitals holding bilateral conversations to try and change minds and either eu leaders. It seems any negotiations could wait frankly. And i think its part of that overall strategy again to let the eu perhaps still for a while and watch uk prepare for a no deal in the hope they may take that eventuality more seriously and start to offer concessions as a result, but not showing any signs of doing that stuff by. Thank you, jonathan. And well find out how this story and many others are covered in tomorrows front pages at 10 40 and 11 30 this evening in the papers our guestsjoining me tonight are kevin schofield, editor of the politicshome website and kate proctor, political reporter for the evening standard.
