Leading surgeons have told this programme that women having Breast Implants like this one should be warned about a condition linked to chronic pain and extreme fatigue. Tens of thousands of women on online forums claim they have suffered from whats known as Breast Implant illness. It is not an official diagnosis, and there is currently little Scientific Evidence that implants cause the symptoms, although the drug regulation body in the us, the fda, has begun to investigate the link. Patients have told this programme they were never warned about the condition, and some have returned to full health after having their implants removed. Surgeons say more research is needed but patients should be warned about the condition. Anna collinson has this exclusive report. Naomi macarthur is five feet two and can lift double her weight. Shes a Fitness Instructor and is proud of her strength. Butjust five months ago, her life was very different. Um, so, yeah, im terrified. But i think. Sorry. In november 2014, naomi decided to get Breast Implants. She knew she looked great but she felt like she was dying. I had the most horrific symptoms. Like, i remember i started getting like severe pains in my stomach, like gut problems. The tiredness that i felt, it always felt like i had ran a marathon and dug like a million trenches and like done loads of stuff and i hadnt done anything. I was writing with a pen and i said to my mum, like, i actually cant write. Its too hard. Like, writing with a pen was that tiring. Naomi changed her diet and made lifestyle changes, but the symptoms kept coming, including hair loss, allergies and rashes. Sorry. Itsjust, like, every time i think about it, it upsets me. Of course. I knew id get emotional doing this. Take your time. We can stop whenever you want. Its been, like, absolutely horrific. Like, the amount of pain and, like, suffering that ive had to go through and going to clinics and hospitals and doctors and saying to them, like, im so ill, and theyrejust, like, saying its not do with the implants. Last summer, naomi discovered breast impla nt illness a condition which consists of a broad range of autoimmune symptoms. She joined Online Support groups and soon found that there were tens of thousands of other women like her. She decided to start a video diary. Like, if id gone to the clinic before i had my breast surgery and they had told me that, you know, you can develop autoimmune conditions, i would have never had implants. And i think people need to be more aware of this. Im about to go down, and im scared. Naomi made the difficult decision to pay thousands of pounds to have her implants removed. There was no guarantee her health would improve. Hopefully, its for the best. Yeah, im sure it will be for the best. Not too close. Very quickly, the symptoms that had plagued naomis life for the past four years disappeared. I cant believe how bloody amazing i feel and how much ive bounced back. Its insane. And, like i said, my eyes are gone completely, like, white. Like, what the hell . I had completely bloodshot eyes all the time, and my eyes are white now. This is crazy. But despite stories like naomis, theres still scepticism in parts of the medical community. I spoke to one surgeon who said he does not believe that Breast Implant illness is a thing. How does it feel hearing Something Like that . I find that really. Actually saying that is kind of. Kind of a bit offensive. Ifeel a bit offended by it, really, because i know, like, what i experienced was real. Like, who are you going to believe the surgeon, whos making money, or the thousands of other women who are ill . There have been more than a million Breast Implant operations in the uk, and most of them turned out well. But complications can arise, which can ruin lives. Complications which some women say they were never warned about. Consultant Plastic Surgeon nora nugent has helped patients like naomi. Breast implant illness is poorly recognised, to be perfectly honest. Its where women have a series of symptoms, and they can vary from person to person. They havent conclusively proven that silicone causes direct harm to the bodys tissues, or causes these reactions, but there are not very many studies directly studying these effects. And if you get an improvement after having your implants removed, then clearly that was the right course of action to take. Going forward, do you think all surgeons should be warning their patients about breast impla nt illness . Ideally, yes, i think patients need the most up to date information possible. Leading surgeons, including the British Association of aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, have told this programme that women should be told about the risk of Breast Implant illness ahead of surgery, despite their still being limited Scientific Evidence. Anyone who believes they may have the condition is advised to see their gp, but removing an implant does not guarantee improved health. Breast implant illness has been discussed amongst women for decades. Do you think its shocking that we still dont know exactly what it is and whats going on . I think its quite disappointing that we dont have all the answers, but i think its encouraging that we are still looking for the answers. Hundreds of thousands of women were affected by the pip implant scandal, which broke in 2010. The implants were twice as likely to rupture and were filled with silicone used in mattresses. Six years later, a National Safety implant register was set up, and women are encouraged tojoin it so they can be traced if something goes wrong in the future. Its hoped it will also lead to a better understanding of breast impla nt illness. Naomi and i have come to meet a woman who is preparing to have her implants removed also known as explanted. Hello. Nice to meet you. Steph harris has tried three different types of implants and, each time, has experienced autoimmune symptoms. This is one of my explanted implants ive got here. So this was my original pip implant that had first time around. Steph previously had Breast Cancer, but her doctors believe her symptoms the Chronic Fatigue and pain are impla nt related. Its cost her a lot, including being a nurse. Its so isolating. I spend 90 of my time alone, lying down in my bed. I cant read for very long. I cant write things for very long. My memory really struggles with it. I watch movies. Thats what i do 90 of the time. And then people see me like this with my makeup on and up and they think, well, youre fine, theres nothing wrong with you. But only those that are really close to me see that, after this, i will be in bed for two days, because im running on adrenaline right now. To deal with the Breast Cancer was one thing, but, to be honest, that was easier. Thats going to sound really strange. The chemotherapy was much easier to deal with than the Chronic Fatigue. And i know that, for a lot people, that willjust sound completely ridiculous, but i guess im unique i can say ive been through both and this is harder. The uks medical devices watchdog has told us more than 1500 adverse incidents involving Breast Implants have been reported in the past five years. It currently does not recognise breast impla nt illness. Steph wants the mhras reporting system to be made more accessible, so the true scale of implant complications are known. Steph, you are having your explant onjuly 15th, so a few weeks time. Naomi, have you got any advice for her . I completely understand how horrible it is. Ill be phoning you, going, oh, im worried about this. Yeah, i know, but its actually, like, what kind of, like, made me feel better about it all wasjust, like, knowing that, like, thinking about next year. Thats it. Its dreaming about things about like that, like going for a walk. And, yeah, if i could get back to work, even if ijust get a little bit more energy tojust make life a bit easier, it would be fantastic. You know, like, in the end, like, health is the most important thing. Yeah. Its now a week since steph had her implants removed. She says shes feeling pretty good and has already been for a few gentle walks. Shes hopeful about the future. Lets speak now to michelle bredin, who had her implants removed last week because of the impact Breast Implant illness symptoms were having on her life. Kate michalkova, says shes been living with Breast Implant illness for three years now and is currently saving up to have her implants removed. Annette stevens, who believes she had Breast Implant illness and says her symptoms were so bad she wished she would die. She had her implants removed two years ago. Sarah beech, who says she has lived with Breast Implant illness symptoms for years. Dr una coales, a former gp who had her implants removed injanaury because she believes they were making ill. And mr naveen cavale, who is a Plastic Surgeon at the nhss Kings College hospital and the uks National Secretary for the International Society of plastic surgery. Thank you all very much indeed for coming in. First of all, ladies, if you wouldnt mind just listing the symptoms that you have had over the yea rs, symptoms that you have had over the years, starting with you, michelle. Too many to list, i will take up the whole show, but my most chronic ones we re whole show, but my most chronic ones werejoint pain, muscle pain, neck pain, Chronic Fatigue, no sleeping at night, heart palpitations, pains in my chest. I had Chronic Fatigue, ibs symptoms, really bad heart palpitations at night, like a jolt to the heart, like i had to take a really deep breath, joint pain as well, lack of concentration. Memory issues, my hair fell out, well, lack of concentration. Memory issues, my hairfell out, insomnia, aches and pains, chronic backache, swelling body, just felt like i was being poisoned, like i was dying, i wanted to die, i was suicidal. Mine was anxiety, then hair loss, to knitters, blurred vision, hip pain. Tonight is. Head pains, fatigue, memory loss, feeling like i was dying. I had dry eyes, very painful, blurry vision, visual field defects, oesophageal ulcer, allergic inflammation of the oesophagus, alcohol intolerance and a rash on my back. Are really wideranging symptoms, and you are all convinced linked to the Breast Implants . Yeah. Were any of you want at all that there may be issues arising . Not at all. 0k, there may be issues arising . Not at all. Ok, lets hear your individual stories. Michelle, isaid all. Ok, lets hear your individual stories. Michelle, i said youre implants were taken out ten days ago, and we were watching naomi in oui ago, and we were watching naomi in our report, and she said, i am alive after the surgery to remove the implants, you said, i know that feeling. I do. I felt implants, you said, i know that feeling. Ido. Ifelt euphoric, implants, you said, i know that feeling. I do. Ifelt euphoric, i absolutely did, because the night before, i couldnt stop crying, because everything had culminated to this point, and i had to come off my medication that was helping me get through life, because you cant be on medication for the operation, and my husband had to virtually carry me through the hospital doors to get into the room for the operation, and waking up afterwards, it was just, into the room for the operation, and waking up afterwards, it wasjust, i just felt wonderful. So immediately . I still have healing to do, myjoint pain is there, butjust waking up, being able to take the deep breath, iam sure being able to take the deep breath, i am sure the other ladies will ee, i am sure the other ladies will agree, just amazing. Was at the same for you . I flew to holland to have mine taken out, and i actually felt, well, i was surprised i woke up, actually, i didnt want to, because i was that ill, i couldnt carry on feeling so dreadfully unwell and not being believed, because i had to literally do my own research and be my own doctor, my own counsellor through this, and i removed my implants over two years ago now, and lam about implants over two years ago now, and i am about 85 sound better, i still get Breast Implant illness flare ups, i still, you know, i have got awful memories of being so ill and literally disabled, being made very vulnerable, and i had a pre existing autoimmune disease, i had underactive thyroid diagnosed six months prior, sol had underactive thyroid diagnosed six months prior, so i kept blaming all my symptoms are not. And obviously the stresses of life, but i felt i was being poisoned, and obviously, well, it took me six months to digest the information after finding these groups on facebook with women also experience in this, and it was the light bulb moment are just reassured me that i had no option, i had to
