I went around this morning on my own. I sat down on the bench and shouted, hello, hello. I love it here. Its lovely. We will speak to the bride and her friend he rescued a man from a burning building on the way home from there hendy. Good morning. Jeremy hunt has called borisjohnson a coward. Do you think he is . You can send us an e mail. Lets bring you the news first. The foreign secretary says Boris Johnson needs to face more public scrutiny over his policies before ballot papers for the race are issued. He and mrjohnson are battling to win the support of the conservative partys 160,000 members, he will conservative partys160,000 members, he will decide next month which one will become Prime Minister. It is very disrespectful to say youre not going to do any head to head debates, any tough media interviews for the next couple of weeks because in two a weeks time, the ballot papers, the postal ballots might well arrive three peoples letterboxes unable bait. To say as he said last week and i challenge you to the itv debate i was willing to do, i immediately accepted for that then it turns out the debate is not happening until after the postal ballots are received and most people have voted. The first gambling clinic is to be opened by nhs england. It will support people aged 13 to 25 is that it comes after research by the Gambling Commission found more than 50,000 children have a gambling problem. The head of Global Affairs for facebook, said nick clegg, has told the bbc the platform is in favour of new industry rules and regulations. He says he wants to create an Oversight Board with the power to create independent rulings on whether questionable content should be removed from their site. There is no evidence it affected the result of the Eu Referendum. Then to say the teeth of People Living in homes, they are being left to rot. Residents did not always have access to dentist am i not getting the support they needed to look after their teeth. Liam gallagher has told their teeth. Liam gallagher has told the bbc he is freaked out about levels of knife crime in london. The former oasis front man he will play at the Glastonbury Festival says his concerns are because his children are of the age of many of the victims. He places the blame for knife crime family at the tour of london mayor sadiq khan. The mayor does not seem to be doing a good job. All that comes out of his mouth is, london is open, open for knife crime and dying and stuff. I had kids of that age, do you know what i mean . 0utand kids of that age, do you know what i mean . Out and about, doing their thing, living, being young. That frea ks thing, living, being young. That freaks me right now. At least 14 people were killed and more than 50 injured when heavy rain and strong winds caused a huge tent to collapse in rajasthan yesterday. Some were electrocuted by live wires as the tent caved in, others killed by falling debris. A bride to be is being hailed a hero after helping to rescue a man from a burning flat on her way home from her hen party. Hayley brown and harriet woods were walking home in North Walsham, norfolk, in the early hours of sunday morning when they noticed smoke coming from a flat. Had the pair intervened they could have been dealing with a fatality. That is the summary dealing with a fatality. That is the summary this morning. Back to victoria. It will speak to bed there is the summary this morning. Back to victoria. It will speak to both those women before 11 oclock. Jeremy hunt has called borisjohnson a coward. It comes as borisjohnson is under pressure to a nswer it comes as borisjohnson is under pressure to answer questions about his girlfriend. He says hes focusing on brexit insisting that britain will leave the eu on 31st october or face a democratic explosion. Were going to talk to two borisjohnson backers this mroning and a writer who used to work with mrjohnson whos writtten a criticial biogrpahy of him. First, a man whos wroked with borisjohnson the cabinet, former tory leadership contender and Health Secretary matt hancock. I think there should be a positive campaign. Burris is the unity candidate and has attracted people right across the party. White is he a coward . It right across the party. White is he a coward . It is a mistake to go negative. I think boris would be the best Prime Minister. The reason i supported him after i dropped out is because i think he could deliver brexit and bring the party together. I notice you are evading answering yes and no. Is borisjohnson a parrot . No, i do not think he is at all. In fact, parrot . No, i do not think he is at all. Infact, he parrot . No, i do not think he is at all. In fact, he is putting himself forward for the tv debate last week. Coward. The tv debate was done extremely well by the host. There will be a dozen more of the hustings around the country. There will be another tv debate, their next one on itv. There is a huge amount of scrutiny and rightly so. Boris has put himself forward for that. Mr hunt says scrutiny of the candidates matters but it is not happening. Hunt says scrutiny of the candidates matters but it is not happeningm he wrong . It is a mistake to go negative and it is completely wrong to say either of the candidates is avoiding any scrutiny. The fact there was a hustings just this last saturday night and last week there was a tv debate on the bbc and we will have a tv debate on itv and we will have a tv debate on itv and we will have a tv debate on itv and we will have more than a dozen more of these hustings, and as far as i know they are all being televised as well, that is proper scrutiny and rightly so. Lets had their debate, lets have the debate on the substance, on the issues that matter, and when we leave the eu and delivering on the referendum result, on the domestic agenda. I see boris has been arguing we should have an agenda of higher pay and not higher taxes. I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically support that. I was making the argument when i was a candidate. Boris johnson says he was going to try and get a new brexiteer and if he does not he will leave with no deal. Why are you supporting him when you said leading with no deal is not possible . him when you said leading with no deal is not possible . I made the argument that it would be difficult to get through parliament that both of the candidates that the party chose to be in the final two want to keep no deal on the table. Lets be really specific, Boris Johnson keep no deal on the table. Lets be really specific, borisjohnson is not just saying really specific, borisjohnson is notjust saying netiquette on the table, he is saying he be prepared to ta ke table, he is saying he be prepared to take the uk out of the eu with no deal. You said no deal is not a policy option available to the next Prime Minister. I am confused about why you are supporting him. Both of the candidates in the final two want to keep no deal on the table. I made my arguments. I did not proceed, it did not i did not get taken forward by the conservative mps and i think boris is best place to get a deal and get us out with a deal. I think boris is best place to get a deal and get us out with a dealm no deal possible or not . |j deal and get us out with a dealm no deal possible or not . I have a lwa ys no deal possible or not . I have always made the argument about parliament and parliament wanting to stop it but the party has decided that it wants to keep no deal on table. Apologies for the loss of sound. Both of the candidates had kept no deal as an option. I made my argument and i am backing boris because he has the best chance of leaving with a deal, which is what i wa nt to leaving with a deal, which is what i want to see. Technical problems clearly. Some of my questions were involved in an interview and some we re involved in an interview and some were not. In the studio we had marcus fisher, conservative mp and a back up of Boris Johnson. We also have Sonia Purnell who wrote a biography on borisjohnson entitled just boris, you have to make to make preparations and the right offers to the other side in order to prepare for any eventuality. That makes it much more likely we can get a good deal. I am asking about a no deal scenario. By making the right preparations and convincing collea g u es preparations and convincing colleagues that that is being prepared properly, that is what the previous. All those mps who are against no deal would suddenly go with Boris Johnson against no deal would suddenly go with borisjohnson as Prime Minister, aha, some preparations. We will now vote for no deal. It is about reassurance and i believe he isa about reassurance and i believe he is a person to reassure both the country at large in business and people in parliament that he can do this and he has a great plan to invest in education and infrastructure and get proper tax reform to really unleash the potential of the british throughout the country and that is going to be a massively important part of the confidence that is required to take any eventuality in our stride. There is no evidence that his plans to reassure your colleagues will work. In fact the opposite. Today Tobias Ellwood suggests there are 12 conservative mps, ellwood suggests there are 12 conservative mp5, 12 of your colleagues, who are prepared to vote against your government with Boris Johnson as Prime Minister if he pursues no deal. He is the guy to be jamie corbyn in an election if they wa nt to jamie corbyn in an election if they want to put out negative messages it is up to them but that is unwise. He has not had a chance yet to put plans into action. 0nce has not had a chance yet to put plans into action. Once people see them coming forward, i think they will have the confidence that we can do this. You do not sound that confident yourself, to be honest. Do this. You do not sound that confident yourself, to be honestlj am perfectly confident. I have been working on the detail of what needs to be done for a couple of years now, both in my committees and in my work with local businesses in the south west. There is a lot they can do to prepare and it is a matter of doing that. Government has a massive hand to play in their they need to get behind business and reassure everybody. They need to give whatever support is required so that we do have that option. Lets talk this through. With some reassurance from mrjohnson, from Prime Minister johnson, the opposition to no deal from some of your own colleagues, from some of your own colleagues, from labour mps, the snp, that will melt away . I do not know if all of it will melt away but the government has to date done a very bad job of showing what the preparations have been and actually trying to take a balanced view. It sounds like alice in wonderland politics. The government machine has been tilled for putting a negative outcome on the reality. How many job losses will there be on no deal . the reality. How many job losses will there be on no deal . I do not think there needs to be any. It depends on mitigation measures and the things government does to support. I do not think there needs to be any this is what i am saying. There will be zero job losses with no deal. For industries that might need to adapt, there is no reason why they should not be a manageable situation. That is what he needs to communicate and that is why he is he anyone who can communicate. We would love him to communicate out with our viewers. 0n love him to communicate out with our viewers. On an almost daily basis we invite him to come onto our programme. Yet he has to appear. That is why you are here. |j programme. Yet he has to appear. That is why you are here. I do know thatjeremy hunt was part of the cabinet who failed to do that and i think it would be a terrible mistake to elect him. Boris is the man to get thejob done. To elect him. Boris is the man to get the job done. You have seen the headlines today. Boris and girlfriend driven out of home. There are times whenjohnson is a coward, says hunt. In the sun, boris and parry, four rows in six weeks. In the mirror, boris wants to get back with his wife. Those will continue until he says something about why the police were called to his home. Ido the police were called to his home. I do not think that is necessarily true. If anybody wants to speak about anything it should be carrie. She is the one involved. She is not running for Prime Minister, why should she Say Something . Everyone is entitled to a private life and these two people are the same. One of them wants to become Prime Minister. If you are a candidate for Prime Minister and the police have been called to your house, fairly or unfairly, and the fa ct house, fairly or unfairly, and the fact there was a police visit, you do not say no comment. You may have something you do not want to disclose. What you said about their comment was important. I do not think there was any reason why a private matter should need to become a private matter. Is mrjohnson going to turn up for the sky news debate tomorrow night . Do you think he should . I do not know. I do not think he needs to. He will be on hustings day in day out for the next month, pretty much every day and have plenty of scrutiny. What is he frightened of . I do not think he is frightened of . I do not think he is frightened of . I do not think he is frightened of everything. He is not a coward, as was said by an opponent today. He should turn up for the sky news debate tomorrow night. Today. He should turn up for the sky news debate tomorrow nightm today. He should turn up for the sky news debate tomorrow night. It is up to him. Let me bring in sonia, he wrote a critical biography of Boris Johnson. Explain to our audience how well you know him and when you used to work alongside him. We used to Work Together in an office of two. I was his deputy back in the 1990s. It was his deputy back in the 1990s. It was at the time of the maastricht treaty. They were working very long hours, just the two of us. It is interesting before marina, his now estranged wife, married him, she came up to me at a party. You know him so well because you have worked long hours with him but what do you really think of him . I think he is really think of him . I think he is really ruthless. You should know marina. You would expect someone to be ruthless he wants to be Prime Minister. He was only a journalist then. It became pretty clear after that, i wrote a piece then. It became pretty clear after that, iwrote a piece in then. It became pretty clear after that, i wrote a piece in 2000 to which people thought was ridiculous. I invited everyone to imagine him on the steps of downing street and i thought maybe 2010 was when he got there but maybe 2019. He always had an agenda, from those days as a journalist. Do you agree with marcus that it journalist. Do you agree with marcus thatitis journalist. Do you agree with marcus that it is up to the girlfriend of borisjohnson to that it is up to the girlfriend of Boris Johnson to make that it is up to the girlfriend of borisjohnson to make a comment or not about police being called in the early hours of friday morning . not about police being called in the early hours of friday morning . I do not really. I agree with that point it is not carrie who is wanting to be Prime Minister. We do need to know a lot about the character of borisjohnson. Marcus was know a lot about the character of Boris Johnson. Marcus was talking about how he would be able to reassure people that no deal is not the disaster some people think. You can only reassure people if people trust him. A Prime Minister or Prime Minister to be should have contact really bad most of the rest of us. We need to know that he she has a sta ble we need to know that he she has a stable life at home, is not up ramming with partners and cannot focus on the in hand. I can remember interviewing a cabinet secretary. Their job interviewing a cabinet secretary. Theirjob of the Prime Minister is relentless, wave after wave of crises, small, medium sized and big. You have to be in top form. We also need someone who has dignity to represent as a if people are going to be sniggering, did you have another visit from the police last night, boris . That makes it more difficult. It is something he needs to tell us about and reassure us about. If he can reassure us about no deal, surely he cant reassure us that it no deal, surely he cant reassure us thatitis no deal, surely he cant reassure us that it is perfectly reasonable to have the Police Arrive at your apartment in the early hours. We need to know. Boris said, people are entitled to ask about me and my determination, my character. When his girlfriend is reportedly telling him, you just dont care for anything because you are spoilt, you have no care for money or anything. What do you think it says about his character . This is all alleged. I have no idea what was said by anybody. People want to hear about what he will do for the country. I do not think our interest behind closed doors, arguments, a lot of things get said in the heat at the moment as anyone who has been married or has a serious relationship knows. His girlfriend is reportedly being heard saying, get off me. What you think it says about his character . Will you be asking him . You are backing Boris Johnson. Do you to know . asking him . You are backing Boris Johnson. Do you to know . I want to know what he will be doing for the country. Do you want to know about this incident or not . It will make no difference as to who is right to lead the country. Do you have any reservations about his character . Keeping Jeremy Corbyn and his marxist ideology out of our country is the most important thing. Do you have any reservations about the character of Boris Johnson . Know, i do not. Everyone is different, eve ryo ne do not. Everyone is different, everyone is imperfect. Any person involved in anything is an imperfect character by definition. I do not think there is any. You are backing him despite him being an imperfect character. There is a get boris operation out there. Who was running that . He has charisma to be able to communicate with people. At this moment in our history, it is a really important art of getting the country back on its feet and in a direction people can follow. Hill is running the get boris operation . lot of people seem to want to make a lot of people seem to want to make a lot of people seem to want to make a lot of these sorts of things. It all makes good copy, great copy, and people want to read things about private lives. I am not saying people are not interested in it but iam people are not interested in it but i am saying there are more important things at the moment for us to be focused on. If anything bad had happened because then i am sure carrie would be the one to speak about it. Ok. If anything bad had happened, carrie would be no one to speak about it. How do you know . Yeah. She is a person who i do not think with bulk at search should anything have happened. My denting anything have happened. My denting anything did. That you do not know . I know in a heated argument is get said people regret. I do not think anything did. Will this be damaging to Boris Johnson think anything did. Will this be damaging to borisjohnson will he be the next Prime Minister . It is a distraction. If you have a private life like that, it is a distraction from the job at hand. We are in a national crisis. The last thing we needis national crisis. The last thing we need is for a Prime Minister to have that kind of private life. I think it is bad news for him. Will it stop him becoming Prime Minister . M depends how it is played out. Somehow a professional photographer happened to be in the same sussex field as borisjohnson happened to be in the same sussex field as Boris Johnson and happened to be in the same sussex field as borisjohnson and carrie holding hands. There is an operation to make sure well think this relationship is not fractured in any way. There are rumours keep going and it will probably not go away. Heaven forbid, if there were another incident like that, it would be completely fatal. It is apt to Boris Johnson to keep going and it is for him to lose but it has narrowed the lead enormously between him and jeremy hunt and it could go further in that way. Still to come. A street built to help bring back memories. We visit the care home in birmingham which has created a replica high street including tea rooms and a post office to help residents relocations. We take an exclusive look at how its making a difference to those with dementia. The Vice President of facebook and former deputy Prime Minister sir nick clegg is calling for independent regulation of social media giants like the one he works for. In an interview with bbc radio 4s today programme, he also says theres absolutely no evidence russia influenced the brexit result using facebook. 0ur media editor, amol rajan, is here. Tell us more about what he has been saying. Nick clegg is giving a speech. He is a surprise appointment but said nick clegg as he should call him, former liberal democrat leader. He gave a speech earlier this year in brussels and is now getting one today in berlin. He is talking about their next internet, the coming internet. Half of humanity is only about to get online and nick clegg is arguing there is a war going on to shape the kind of internet. When it be a californian one, a chinese full garden or will it be european, a bit more regulated . He says it is not up to private companies to set the laws by which the rest of us operate online. It is absolutely right that Companies Like facebook acknowledge the mistakes they have made and of course mistakes have been made. It isjust that i do not think it is in any way conceivable, more than that, ido any way conceivable, more than that, i do not think it is right for private companies to set the rules of the red for something which is as profoundly as important as how Technology Says society. Rules of the road. It is not something that Big Tech Companies from the United States or where there can and should do on their own. They spent made headlines for all the wrong reasons when 14 year old Molly Russell took her own life. Earlier this year there was a huge outpouring of public solidarity with the father of Molly Russell, ian. This is because, it is covered extensively on this programme can and should do on their own. They spent made headlines for all the wrong reasons when 14 year old Molly Russell took her own life. Earlier this year there was a huge outpouring of public solidarity with the father of Molly Russell, ian. This is because, it is covered extensively on this programme, where one reason she took her own life. It is a complicated area. Allowing some people to express themselves and sharing images of self harm can be a way of alerting authorities about what is going on. Nick clegg said facebook had to change their position but for complex reasons. We try and well in academic experts and others to make sure that a platform like instagram can also be a forceful bid, to save lives and say people from doing damage to themselves. 0ver lives and say people from doing damage to themselves. Over the last year or so 3500 people who were in a state of immense distress and on the point of taking their own lives where reached by Emergency Services because of signals detected on social media. I hope over time we can get that balance right and learn from these awful, tragic events and bea from these awful, tragic events and be a tool for saving lives. What did he say about claims that russia has interfered with various elections, including the Eu Referendum . He was remarkably emphatic about it. What is striking, there is concrete evidence that russia didnt appear when it came to the election with donald trump. Russia tried to cede quite hard line donald trump. Russia tried to cede quite ha rd line thoughts donald trump. Russia tried to cede quite hard line thoughts into public conversation and used facebook to do it. With brexit it has been a lot less clear. Nick clegg was asked, is there a conspiracy . He said really clearly, no, there is not. There are some shades of grey. How do you define influence on a social media platform . There define influence on a social media platform . There is define influence on a social media platform . There is one thing to say there is a troll farm in parts of russia that it could also be that russia that it could also be that russia and its state propaganda forces are hoping to grow conversation. Clegg was emphatic and said there is no interference. Depending on how you define interference, russia did play a role. I accept we need to act but there is no evidence it happened in there is no evidence it happened in the brexit referendum. The man two full analyses and all the data we had in the run up to the brexit referendum, following the same methodology as we did after the fbi notified facebook of outside interference in the 2016 us president ial election. We share all of this information with a select committee in westminster and elsewhere and found no evidence of a significant attempt by outside forces. There was an interesting question about when sir nick clegg went over to facebook. Was he cannot have any influence . Was he going to change things . When we first started talking about the issues, face that has come a long way on regulation. They are saying they want to be regulated. He is talking about hate speech, use of data. The company has gone a long way. Cynics and sceptics would argue that they are saying this because they want to get in and get ahead of regulation before people say, as lots of american president ial contenders are saying, that the company should be broken up. Thank you. We are going to bring you exclusive access to a care home that has built access to a care home that has built a replica high street, together with a replica high street, together with a tearoom. Robert harvey house created sensory street, which also includes a host of animals, to help stimulate memories and the senses. More than half of the residents at the home are living with dementia. Catrin nye has been to visit. 0riginally we looked at doing shopfronts, but then as the plans were developed and itjust got bigger and bigger, and its like, no, lets do this, lets actually have not shopfronts. We wanted spaces where people could could use, that families could use. At this care home in birmingham, theyve built an entire sensory street a shopping street complete with a tea rooms, a sweet shop, a butchers shop, a phone box, a garage and a post office. Thats half a crown. Oh, thats massive. What sweets do you want . Have you got your money to pay for it . No. 0h and then, at the end of it, parrots, guinea pigs, ducks and a couple of hungry goats, all designed to stimulate the senses of the residents here. I went around this morning on my own, and first of all i met the parrots, and i sat down on the bench and just shouting, hello hello i love it here. Its lovely. The people that run this car home were inspired by seeing similar ideas on a visit to the netherlands. Here you go made mejump hes going to nearly eat your finger. I think its excellent, it gives them a talking point. Im 99 now, and i shall be 100 in a month. No, no. Eh . When will you be 100 . Yeah. When . 0n the 7th of october. More than half the residents here are living with dementia. One of them is vivs mum audrey, whos 90. Shes been at the home for two years now. Jam or cream or both, mum . Both. Both i might have known. What is it that your mum gets out of the sensory street, rather than itjust being a bit ofa gimmick . My mum was just saying about the butchers shop. She cant remember the last time she saw a butchers shop. So, just thinking about those things is really positive. How she felt when she was younger, the places that she visited when she was younger. But the majority of residents that come to us with advanced dementia, their health is going to decline. Even if we havent got a glorious day like today, well wrap them up in a blanket, bring them out, take them into the tea room, put the heating on in the tea room and just try and make the day special. If you have advanced dementia, you may not necessarily recall whats happening, but if, just in that moment, there is a connection made a smile, a laugh if you can do something thatjust improves that day, then thats the most important thing. I do have absolute confidence that she is in the best possible place, as opposed to some of the others ive seen. She takes part when she is asked to and seems to get something out of it. We did last year a zumba demonstration i was roped into that. And i asked her what she thought of it, and she announced that it was a very strange experience. You thought it was a bit strange. Yeah. Yes. I still do. You still do . I think zumba is weird too. Around half the residents here have their places privately funded and half are paid for by the nhs or local authority. The care homes run by a charity and also does fundraising to pay for some of the facilities. Ijumped out of an aeroplane at 13,000 feet to raise money for sensory street, and id do it every week if i could. So it wasnt really a chore . It was, at the time, oh, my god. The home also cares for people with Mental Health problems. Chris and his wife jane have been together 22 years and were both enjoying retirement. And so we had all the time together, 24 hours a day, every day. So we had a lovely time, holidays. Everything was fine until four years ago, whenjane suddenly had a psychotic episode, a nervous breakdown, and was immediately sectioned. Jane spent four years in various hospitals and Mental Health institutions. She doesnt remember any of it. Some days she didnt even recognize chris. But injanuary, it was decided that jane could move out, and chris wanted to try this care home. Since shes been in here, when the consultant came, the consultant said. She thought it was a miracle, the way that jane has recovered, cos she recognizes me, she recognises people, she socialises. She loves the tea shop, and when, on special occasions, like valentines day, they set it up as a valentines day restaurant, and that really touched, jane, you know . Jane wasnt sure she was Strong Enough to talk to us on camera, but shes decided she can do it. There you go. Thank you so much. Hello. Hello 0h. Arent they beautiful . Theyre amazing. Mm. Yeah, sometimes they do all different voices. Hello it took four years to get me better. As soon as i came here, with the animals and all the care and the love and because of devotion and love, it got me better. Jane, youve done so well today, youve been walking so well everywhere. Love, your chrissy. And sleep well tonight. Love you, popchick. Ijust write on the back. Sound as a pound. Im so normal. Transformation amazing and fantastic. When did you do those, chris . She likes it. I love it. Yeah, kind of love it. Dont you . Ido, yeah. Monkey. I do it. How have the last four years been for you . Its been. As awful as you can imagine. But i did visit jane every day, even when she was in london. How have you managed . Byjust taking it day by day and not thinking about it too much. Slept apart for four and a half years now, you know . And weve never had a row in our life, so. It was always lovely to go to bed together. Its one thing i miss you. You know, you are still. Well, i watch the tv in bed, turn around to Say Something jane about the programme, then realise she isnt there. And that still happens, you know, after four and a half years. What do you like about working here . Dont, because ill get emosh. I just. Its family. Everything. Its notjust me its everybody that is here. Domestics, carers, caterers everybody. Yeah. Lovely. There are 55,000 children classed as having a gambling problem in the uk, according to the Gambling Commission. Now, the first nhs gambling clinic for children will open this year as part of a new network of services for addicts. Here is the Health Secretary, matt hancock. This is an area i care deeply about. I represent a new market, a wonderful town famous for horse racing which has its fair share of gambling problems. I have worked both as culture secretary and now as Health Secretary to make sure people get the support they need. We can try to tackle the gambling but we also have to give people the support when they need it. Because gambling addiction is a medical problem and it needs proper medical support. I wanted to ask you about the responsibility of the gambling industry. They have spent Something Like £1. 5 billion on marketing and advertising campaigns. Why are you not forcing them to pay for the consequences of gambling addiction . I would like to see that happen. I have talked about having a mandatory levy on them. At the moment it is a volu nta ry levy. Levy on them. At the moment it is a voluntary levy. They are increasing that the amount that they pay, and quite significantly, to 150 million, this isnt the sort of thing that should be done voluntarily, hence im getting on from within nhs funds and making sure that people get the support they need with these new gambling clinics. So far there has only been one clinic specialised at giving people with gambling addictions what they need, in london. Its an absolutely brilliant clinic, i have seen its work for myself, and we are expanding it across the country with new clinics in leeds and manchester and there will be 14 in total when they are rolled out. We have to do it without just asking politely, but it is absolutely true that the gambling Industry Needs to do more as well. Joining us now, mark potter, a former gambling addict who goes into schools to speak to children and teachers, liz karter, a gambling addiction therapist whose clients include children, and james grimes, who started gambling when he was 16 and lost an estimated £100,000. James, how did you begin at 16 . believed that the prevalence of gambling from a young age within sport, especially exacerbated my problem. I was able to access betting sites through using parents are possibly accounts and people putting bets on for me so it was about the ease and accessibility from a young age that was worrying, alongside the sheer prevalence of advertising at that age. What were you betting on . Predominantly football but the minute that turned, when i turned a legal age, it was anything and for ten years of my life there was no limits to what and how much i would bet on. Liz, how susceptible our young people, including 16 year olds, like james was when he began . including 16 year olds, like james was when he began . I am seeing more and more young people in my practice. The usual pathway is that somebodys family will send me an e mailand they somebodys family will send me an e mail and they are absolutely desperate, saying we want to know what to do, we have tried everything, tried bailing them out, tried tough love, nothing works. They are desperate to understand how to be truly helpful. And also to understand what on earth is going on with this person that they no longer recognise. And a big part of the treatment that i offer is im helping someone to understand the underlying motivation of their behaviour. Of course, the end consequence of any gambling addiction is that somebody is obsessed with money and loss chasing, which is compounding things like stress and depression and anxiety. What i often find in the process of my work is that, for many young people, they were feeling stressed or depressed or anxious anyway. And they were using, particularly with online gambling, there were quite unaware is as a form of emotional management. Let me ask mark, does that ring a bell . Was gambling some kind of emotional management for you or not . gambling some kind of emotional management for you or not . I think it was at various stages. I think it was the time and the links to sport for me, mainly. And this initiative from the nhs is great to see and the pathway of support available to young people suffering from gambling related harm is ideal. Obviously, our passion at revolves around education and to invest as much as we can around education and prevention so more people are making better informed choices from a young age and so fewer people will will need to go to these kind of facilities. Are you shocked there are 55,000 children with a gambling addiction in this country . Im not. Our education pillar is a vital part of what we do at epic and patrick, who runs that, does a greatjob. We have been to well over a hundred schools this year and educated 2000, 3000 kids, and the feedback we received from the sessions is fantastic. It has shown a need for this. We have always had education around alcohol and drugs in schools, and with the prevalence of gambling now, especially with this tech savvy generation where all kids have ipads and iphones and accessibility so high, education around gambling is more needed than ever. James, is it you estimated you had lost hundred thousand pounds in gambling over 12 yea rs. Thousand pounds in gambling over 12 years. Describe to our audience how that impacts on your life and those around you. Obviously i am still feeling the financial consequences of that and the practical side of it as well. It is really important to note that towards the end, the money is actually irrelevant. It is just used as a fuel to get the buzz and its more about the Mental Health side of it and not making rational decisions, losing self esteem and confidence, feeling depressed. These are all things that are not being made aware to children from a young age. Obviously the prevalence of gambling, the advertising of it, is making it seem, it is glamorising it like casual and fun and sociable but they dont see the other side of that. For people like myself, we know it is quite the opposite of all those things and unfortunately im still living those consequences. Thank you all very much, we appreciate your time, ms carter, james grantand appreciate your time, ms carter, james grant and mike potter. Thank you for your messages. Liz karter. Jeremy hunt has described borisjohnson as a coward and daniel says, this is a silly name calling, borisjohnson is says, this is a silly name calling, Boris Johnson is brave says, this is a silly name calling, borisjohnson is brave and resourceful and his attitude to europe is farfrom resourceful and his attitude to europe is far from cowardly. Resourceful and his attitude to europe is farfrom cowardly. He also had the courage to resign from cabinet, unlike his opponent. Brian said, to defend boriss caldas by saying he has already had many debates is futile. His cowardice. My debates is futile. His cowardice. My question is how he would cope in real intense meetings and challenges on an ad hoc basis, how will he cope in pmqs . Bill says, jeremy hunt is showing his true colours. He shows he will do anything underhand to get into number ten. He is mudslinging of the worst kind. Not somebody we wa nt of the worst kind. Not somebody we want as Prime Minister. He ruined the nhs as Health Secretary and will ruin the uk. Another says, jeremy hunt says Boris Johnson ruin the uk. Another says, jeremy hunt says borisjohnson should be prepared to go head to head and a nswer prepared to go head to head and answer questions out of respect to members of the conservative party but what about respect for the rest of the country who are not conservative Party Members . They are our prospective Prime Minister as well and ifor one our prospective Prime Minister as well and i for one would our prospective Prime Minister as well and ifor one would certainly like to know so jeremy well and ifor one would certainly like to know sojeremy hunt is quite right and Boris Johnson like to know sojeremy hunt is quite right and borisjohnson should be debating his policies in public. On that subject, is it right to get involved if you hear an argument between a couple or do they have a right to privacy . Last week, a neighbour of the mp borisjohnson, who is of course competing to become the next tory leader and Prime Minister, reported hearing what he believed to be mrjohnson and his partner having a loud late night argument. Police attended but said there was no cause for police action. This morning former International Development secretary priti patel told bbc radio 4s today programme a recording of the argument, given to the guardian newspaper, was part of a politically motivated series of attacks. Mrjohnson hasnt commented on what happened and there is no indication that there was any violence involved or anyone was in any danger, but it has begun a debate on whether we have a moral duty to report a domestic disturbance. Ian mcnicholl, who is a survivor of domestic abuse. He was abused by his ex partner for 14 months without any intervention from his neighbours despite visible signs he had been attacked. Nazir afzal is the former chief prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service. What you think of neighbours contacting the police if they hit a couple having a real classic for more than two decades we have been saying it is there responsibly and everybodys business. Saying it is there responsibly and everybodys business. Having a row. I remember a young teenage boy giving evidence against his father after he had murdered his mother after he had murdered his mother after suffering decades of abuse and he told the court, i wish a friend or neighbour or family men he told the court, i wish a friend or neighbour orfamily men had said something because he was too scared to do so. Its notjust a responsibility, it is a duty. If we fail in that duty, somebody is going to die. We have been talking about this in this context, that is everybodys business and responsibility. We recognise victims of abuse will suffer on average 35 incidents before they report to police. If they are too scared to do so and do not have the courage to do so and do not have the courage to do so or the support to do so then somebody else needs to do that for them. Ian, you were physically attacked by your former partner over attacked by your former partner over a period of about 14 months. Tell our audience what that period of your life was like. That 14 months it took me to the brink of suicide. There wasnt a day went by when i wasnt hoping and praying that somebody in the neighbourhood would have got involved and contacted the police. My appearance had changed drastically, i would police. My appearance had changed drastically, iwould be repeatedly going to the shops covered in blood but nobody intervened. I think we have to look out for our friends and family members in neighbourhoods and communities and, to echo the previous comments, i would wholeheartedly support anybody making that call to the police. think you actually found out after the court case that your next door neighbours stop sitting in their front room because your screaming got so bad and they didnt report it to the police . Thats correct. Part of the reason behind that is that even after i had left the property, even after i had left the property, even though they were sat in their own living room, they could still hear me screaming so the memory of my screams had clearly troubled them and caused them trauma. Yet they made no contact. I think there was a fear factor with them as well. Nazir afza l , fear factor with them as well. Nazir afzal, what you say about the previous the argument, that it is interfering or infringing someones right to privacy . You have to think about the bigger mischief to deal with. If we had 99 reports that amounted to little or nothing and one persons life that was saved, my view is that that one person being savedis view is that that one person being saved is more important. Ians story is appalling and terrible, but we know there are people who dont even suffer physical abuse but, as you have shown on your programme, controlling and coercive behaviour. They dont feel able to talk about this subject, they dont feel able to seek help. They might not even think of themselves as victims. It is absolutely essential that neighbours, friends, family members, school friends, anybody and everybody that has concerns, they are able to share those concerns in order to ultimately protect people who possibly cant protect themselves. I want to ask you about themselves. I want to ask you about the accusations that the handing of the accusations that the handing of the recording of what happened in the recording of what happened in the early hours of friday morning involving Boris Johnson the early hours of friday morning involving borisjohnson and his girlfriend, it was then handed to a newspaper, which has led to people like some borisjohnson supporters and others saying it is politically motivated. What do you say to that . We used to say and still say that if you are a victim of abuse, you should keep a diary because we need the evidence. At the end of the day, u nless the evidence. At the end of the day, unless there is evidence which is compelling and strong, it is one persons a word against another. Now we have technology and that makes it so much easier because you can record something at the press of a button. Ultimately, that information should be provided to the authorities. If the authorities are not interested, its up to the individuals what they do with them. My individuals what they do with them. My personal view, having worked with the media for more than two decades, there is something odd going on. They encourage people, i would imagine, to come forward with information they have, to give them these type of technology or the evidence they have collected. All sorts of areas of concern. Suddenly, it becomes an issue. My personal view is that we should operate without fear of favour, nobody is above the law and just because of your wealth or status, does not mean people should not have information that ultimately could be useful to an enquiry. And i cant comment on this particular case but if the character of an individual is up for grabs, so to speak, and being questioned, clearly anything that supports that good character or perhaps suggest something otherwise should be in the public domain. Thank you very much, we really appreciate your time this morning. Nazir afzal, former chief prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in the north west of england. And ian mcnicol, a survivor of domestic abuse. Thank you for your time. This is a photograph of Boris Johnson and his girlfriend, the first time they have been seen together in public since a row between them was reported to the police in the early hours of friday morning. This newsjust in, sky has cancelled that debate tomorrow at which they had invited jeremy hunt and Boris Johnson. Which they had invited jeremy hunt and borisjohnson. Mr hunt had agreed to take part, borisjohnson had refused so they have cancelled their tv debate tomorrow night, saying they will reshoot the invitation for a week today. We will see what happens. A bride to be is being hailed a hero after helping to rescue a man from a burning flat on her way home from her hen party. I ran upstairs and was just throwing everything on the stairs to get out of the way so i could get their man downstairs out of the flat. How was he . I think he was ok. But im not 100 sure. How you had a good night . What time of the night was it . About three in the morning have you had a few drinks . Yeah we had what were you wearing . Well, many, many congratulations and well done and thank you so much for talking to us. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for your messages about the tory leadership race. This is from someone who does not leave their name, Boris Johnson is someone who does not leave their name, borisjohnson is showing he is a normal guy, everyone argued and it has nothing to do with how he would be promised a minister. Harley said, if it was Jeremy Corbyn, be promised a minister. Harley said, if it wasJeremy Corbyn, the conservatives would be calling for him to explain. Its a serious thing youre talking about and as a member of the public i would like him to explain seeing as hes going to be Prime Minister and i dont have a choice in the matter. John said, when he has promised halting to account but until then his a nswera ble to account but until then his answerable to the conservative members only. This one says, im fed up members only. This one says, im fed up with you or going on about Boris Johnson arguing with his partner as if no one else in the real world has ever argued with the other half. Get on with the real issues out there. We did talk about brexit as well. Another one says, how can it be that someone running to be a minister cant remain silent . Borisjohnson will bring the uk to its knees. Julian says, a domestic dispute is nobodys business other than the parties concerned. This is an attempt at undermining Boris Johnsons journey to number ten. Attempt at undermining Boris Johnsonsjourney to number ten. We are back tomorrow. Bbc newsroom live is next. Good morning. It is very disrespectful to say youre not going to do any head to head debates, any tough media interviews, for the next couple of weeks, beause in two weeks time those ballot papers, those postal ballots, are going to arrive through peoples letter boxes, and theyre going to vote. In a newspaper article today borisjohnson insists he will deliver brexit by the end of october.
