Iran warns it is about to breach a limit on its stockpile of enriched uranium, a year after the us withdrew from the nuclear deal. The Prime Minister launches plans to train every new teacher in england to spot the Early Warning signs of mental illness. And andy murray tells the bbc hes pain free ahead of his return to competitive tennis in the doubles event at queens. Good afternoon. The contenders to become conservative leader, and Prime Minister, have been making their case on brexit and other issues at a hustings with westminster journalists, ahead of a second ballot of mps tomorrow. Borisjohnsons campaign was given a boost by the endorsement of the Health Secretary matt hancock, who dropped out of the race last week. But his rivals have criticised him for his absence at todays hustings, and also from last nights televised debate on channel 4. Heres our Political Correspondentjessica parker. Hes not always been the silent type. Are you hiding from media scrutiny, sir . But Boris Johnson had little to say this morning and nothing to say last night. He didnt turn up to channel 4s Leadership Debate. But even so, he secured the backing of the Health Secretary matt hancock, who pulled out of the race last week, a boost for borisjohnson and a blow for others. Disappointing, naturally. Im a huge fan of matts. But candidates are ploughing on with their pitch. At the moment, yes, of course it is the case that boris is the front runner, but we need to make sure that he is tested and that we have two candidates who go forward, if boris is one of them, who we know are capable of being Prime Minister from day one. Only two candidates can face that final vote of the conservative Party Membership and because of borisjohnsons dominance so far, other contenders are trying to suggest that theyre the best person to give borisjohnson a run for his money. But time is running out to make that case. The second round of voting among tory mps takes place tomorrow. This candidate says hes calling his rivals bluff, rory stewart, unlike, other contenders, doesnt claim that a better deal can be wangled out of the eu. We all agree we want to get brexit done as quickly as possible, but the question is how. The challenge with what boris is presenting is, hesjust saying, im going to get it done. Hes not explaining how that will work in parliament, how that will work in europe. A lot of focus will fall on the front runner, including scrutiny on how theyll keep the public purse trim. One rory stewart backer says Boris Johnsons policy pledges are looking costly. Well, ijust think that every monday when boris writes his column, he makes another pledge for a lot of money, either a tax cut or a spending pledge, and the question that all politicians have to answer is, where is the money coming from . Six candidates remain in the running in total. At least one will be knocked out tomorrow. Theyre all hoping to succeed theresa may, who visiting a school today, was studious in giving little away. I am not backing a particular candidate. I havent endorsed a particular candidate. I havent told anybody who. I did vote last thursday. I havent told anybody who i voted for, and im not going to. Boris johnson arriving in westminster. He will go up before a private hustings of tory mps today and hes expected to take part in the bbcs tv debate tomorrow night. He might be in the back seat, but hes still leading the pack. Jessica parker, bbc news. With me now is guto harri, who served as Communications Director for borisjohnson when he was mayor of london. Thank you forjoining us. Looking at the figures, can boris the unstoppable . He has more than the went in his sales. He seems to have it almost in the bag. A lot can go wrong. He pulled out of his own accord lasting but he is clearly the frontrunner. It is hard to see anyone pulling close enough behind to actually stop in. People have said that borisjohnsons biggest enemy is potentially himself. But we know him extremely well. We have known him for decades. The general public can see more of boris and we have any other politician almost. So the idea we are being deprived access baffles me. We have seen him be funny, serious, be grilled by firstly every political interviewer in the last 20 years, so we kind of know the man. Wejust in the last 20 years, so we kind of know the man. We just dont know where he is good to be on brexit. But we havent seen him grilled as a potential Prime Minister at this moment in our history with this in enormous issue brexit. We have heard about him, but you are right, he does seems to have a strategy now that less is more. And he needs to stand out from the pack, because not all candidates are equal. He is in a different position, he is way ahead. So it is somehow appropriate, the migrants the grain for me, to wait for the field to be whittled down so he isnt there with six others or whatever he is worth. Would you have prepared to see him enter. |j understand prepared to see him enter. understand what he is doing. The view i had was that the more people saw boris, the more they would understand trust and like him. But i think it is different at this point, there are very tricky issues that need to be dealt with. What he doesnt want to do is drop something thatis doesnt want to do is drop something that is going to change the dynamics, but he doesnt want to box himself in. When he has been minister, we all know it extremely difficult, and he doesnt want to have his room for manoeuvre limited any work that is necessary. You talked about people trusting him. Is that really a word you can use for ten because he is also famous for gaff, being hazy on detail and often not sticking to the facts . Nine out of ten times people meant that he believes what he said and he said what it believes. He said something he shouldnt have, but no one thought he didnt believe it. I think the key for him now is to point to that period, eight years when he was in charge, he was top of the tree, ceo, as mayor of london. He saysjudge me by the tree, ceo, as mayor of london. He says judge me by what i the tree, ceo, as mayor of london. He saysjudge me by what i did. And in that context i am comfortable seeing his positioning a sound, he led from the middle, he championed diversity of london and all that religious and ethnic expressions. He was the first conservative to advocate gay marriage, cutting taxes. It was a more chequered record than naturally. The murder rate was going down in the country generally as well as in london. Rate was going down in the country generally as well as in londonm was spiralling before he became mayor and it is going up again now. Soi mayor and it is going up again now. So i think that alone is an achievement. And the privacy one. He was re elected in a left leaning city, mid term of a conservative government. Mid recession and in the immediate aftermath of such shambolic government budget. So i think that is what people think they are getting. That is why he is attracting this very broad church of conservatives. Someone from at hancock on one end. Isnt that in itself going to be difficult . If you do is this race, he has full with such vastly different expectations supporting him . It is a gift to be able to leave to people with different impressions of the same conversation and leave them all filling in the gaps thinking that you are there kind of guy. He does pull this off, but you are right, at some point, decisions must be made about brexit in particular. That will be extreme it. But i think that is why hes been getting careful about how much he exposes himself at this point. So that he maintains the room for manoeuvre that is necessary to do something that will require greater agility and perhaps a little shamelessness when it incomes. You talked about him somebody who embraces diversity, is proud of the multiculturalism of london stop he has also spoken about muslim women resembling bank robbers in their veils. How does one reconcile those 20i veils. How does one reconcile those 20 i criticised and for that and it surprised me, because he had a muslim woman in his top team at city hall. For gay men, a muslim woman, a turban wearing seek. That is the proof. Sikh. The work of a columnist, not the proof of a man who led the city. Briefly, would you work for him again . I dont think the call will come to me but it is interesting that he and his first term of mayor, a lot of people moved on from the campaign and the difference between running a city and running a Political Campaign in tribal versus being efficient was quite great. So he will need good people around him, not me. But he will need good people around him who tell him what he needs to hear as well as what he wants to hear. Very good to talk to you. Thank you. And tomorrow, you keep across all the developments in the conservative leadership race, on the bbc news channel. The result of the second ballot is expected at 6 oclock tomorrow , well be building up to the announcement throughout tomorrows bbc news at 5 , and bring you the result live , as well as analysis and reaction. Labours deputy leader tom watson has called on his party to make the case for the uk staying in the eu, saying another referendum is the least worst option. The Leaderjeremy Corbyn has so far resisted calls to fully back another public vote, despite some labour mps saying his brexit position led to a poor performance for the party in recent elections. 0ur chief Political Correspondent vicki young was at the speech labour have been accused of sitting on the fence when it comes to their brexit policy. Particularly backing a second referendum. At the moment it is to try and push for a general election and then hold a referendum in some circumstances. But i sitting on the fence, some fear at what has happened is that jeremy on the fence, some fear at what has happened is thatJeremy Corbyn has ended up not pleasing anyone and that has led to that bad result in the european elections where labour finished third behind the liberal democrats and the brexit party. Lots of labour mps democrats and the brexit party. Lots of labourmps are democrats and the brexit party. Lots of labour mps are saying they knocked on doors and even had members saying they would be backing the liberal democrats because they had a much clearer policy on all this. Now tom watson the deputy leader has had run ins withJeremy Corbyn before and he is pushing still to try and make the position much clearer on a second referendum. Earlier he spoke to our Political Editor laura. Its arguing for a change to official policy, but i hope that im doing that on the basis of a firm discussion with many thousands of Labour Party Members and hearing what they are saying. Now look, if we get to our conference, or if we have an emergency conference and the position changes, then of course there will be a point when we have to sort of align around a new position. But i wouldnt be honest with myself, i wouldnt be true to myself, and i dont think i would be true to the Party Members that lobby me this every day if i didnt raise these ideas a little bit wealth having that post election analysis. If labour does not move to a Firm Position of offering another vote, and campaigning to stay in the european union, can you rule out a suggestion that you might walk away . The labour party is in me, ive been a member since my 15th birthday, the first day i could join. Im never going to leave the labour party. Sometimes i wonder whether the labour party is leaving me, but no, i love the labour party, i love its members. And what im going to do is campaign for the issues that i feel very strongly about, and in politics, you win some and you lose some. How you deal with defeat is as important as how you deal with victory. Tom watson there. Not everyone in the party wants another referendum. Lets speak now to student commit. His point there is that Labour Party Members hearts are in remain and that should be much clearer about campaigning to stay in the uk. have always campaigned for us to honour the result of the referendum ina way honour the result of the referendum in a way that protects the jobs of the people we were elected to represent. I think that is the way that we can hold the country together. But also protect every economy going forward. The fact is, whichever wing of this debate you are on, whether or not you want to leave the eu with a sensible pragmatic deal or whether you want to have a second referendum, we have to have a second referendum, we have to actually vote through the Withdrawal Agreement fell. Theresa may tried to table that before the european elections, there was a knee jerk reaction to it and thats it the train in motion which led to the tory party going to elect Boris Johnson whos going to crashes out of the eu without a deal. What the leadership of my party should be doing is seeing to whoever is the new Prime Minister, the table table the withdrawal again and we can stop no deal but at Committee Stage, there would be a vote on whether on not to have a second referendum on the deal. So whether you want a second referendum or whether you want a sensible bridge building form of brexit, we have to vote the Withdrawal Agreement fell through and that is the number one message i hope that the leadership of the labour party will take to the new payments. The problem is that in some parts of the country, your party is losing a lot of votes to the liberal democrats because they are the party of remain. Isnt it better for labour to come down one side or the other because at the moment it pleases nobody . The number one priority has to be a catastrophic no deal crash out on the 31st of october. Unfortunately, i think advocate of a second referendum have played into the hands of people who want to crash out with no deal because we have created a deadlock in parliament and a deadlock these into the hands of the no deal people because the legal default position is that if there is no agreed deal on the table, we crash out on the 31st of october. That is what borisjohnson is going to deliver unless we tell him that if we table is the Withdrawal Agreement again, we will vote for it and we will unlock the deadlock and we can have a vote on whether there isa we can have a vote on whether there is a referendum on that deal or we can put down amendments to make it a more sensible form of brexit. But lets not forget the Withdrawal Agreement belt was the product of cross Party Agreement belt was the product of cross party talks which include a bell bill on workers rights, Single Market alignment and possibility have added eight on putting it all to a second referendum. So we need to support it. Isnt it a bit late for that . If you had said this earlier and others in your party, some people saying they have made a mistake, why didnt she do it then . It was a blind brexit until we had the cross party talks but they delivered a set of really important concessions which put a lot more flesh on the bone and thatis put a lot more flesh on the bone and that is the point we should have said yes. Is any sense that Jeremy Corbyn will do this . I will let him speakfor corbyn will do this . I will let him speak for himself but a number of us are making it clear that we should be saying to the new Prime Minister, table the Withdrawal Agreement bill again and we will get it across the line for a second reading but then be ready for a lot of amendments and robust debate at Committee Stage so that we can shape it into a brexit that we can shape it into a brexit that works for this country. It is the only way to break the impasse and im afraid that if we dont do that, the country is going to crash out of the eu on the 31st of october and that would be a disaster for jobs, for the economy and for our national security. Thank you very much. Potentially one route through for whoever becomes the next Prime Minister. The numbers in parliament, the hung parliament, stays exactly the hung parliament, stays exactly the same of course. Breaking news that the former egyptian president has died in court.
