Three more conservative leadership candidates launch their campaigns to become the next Prime Minister. And the man who knew too much, was the half brother of kim jung un murdered in malaysia, because he was a cia informant . Hello and welcome im katty kay in washington and Christian Fraser is in london. The two top guns in american president ial politics will face off today in iowa. It is the state that kicks off the us president ial election season with the Iowa Caucuses. Its also a swing state. In 2012, barack obama won iowa with 52 of the vote. In 2016, trump won the state with 51 . So a purple state, worth the fight. And todays dueling speeches perhaps give us a preview of what the race may look like. Donald trump has no challenger. On the democrat side joe biden is one of 24. But for now he is the frontrunner. And ahead of his Campaign Speech later today, he has been speaking to Community Workers in the town of council bluffs. President trump is in iowa today and i. Because. And i hope his presence he will be clarifying because iowa farmers have been crushed by his tariff over china, and no one knows better than the folks in iowa. He thinks being tough is great. Its easy to be tough when someone is great. Its easy to be tough when someone elses absorbs the pain. The president press secretary had this to say. I thinkjoe biden has a lot of questions he needs to answer himself. The idea that he would say that the president poses any type of threat is truly laughable. But was sarah saunders. For more we can bring in chief Political Correspondent of the des moines register, bree ann fawn en steele. Thank you forjoining us. As these two men arrive in iowa with what looks like its going to be a Bitter Campaign on both sides, is this what the 2020 race is going to look like . I think this is a preview to a potential general election matchup. In most polls, joe biden is leading the polls and hes trying to position himself as the frontrunner, and has made donald trump his chief oil in the race, rather than engaging with the rest of his primary opponents made him his chief foil. I think that will play into the Iowa Caucuses and potentially beyond. So the voters in iowa are traditionally known as being polite people and here we have the president basically saying that joe biden is mentally stupid, and joe biden is mentally stupid, and joe biden is mentally stupid, and joe biden using his speech, one thing after the other, to attack President Trump. How does that go down with the voters there . People in iowa are known for iowa nice, but democrats right now are ready for a fight. They are looking forward to a matchup with the president , to say they have a nominee who is tough enough, Strong Enough to take him on and really engage with the president. For the democrats, theyre looking for someone with a backbone who will engage and can respond in kind. Iowa republicans supported donald trump in 2016 and 2015. I was looking at your front page, 74 on the democrat side think there are too many in the race. How are you coping . You have 19 democrat candidates there this weekend, 600 Campaign Events this year and we are eight months away from the february caucuses. Its a lot to keep track of, weve got 2a candidates, 19 in the state this weekend at the same time, the same event. For many of the democrats who are trying to stay engaged and keep track of all of these candidates, it is a lot. We have three in four saying it is too many, wishing that several would drop out. Our latest bowl suggests latest bowl suggest some are at zero. Difficult to keep track with so zero. Difficult to keep track with so many candidates, including those who have this celebrity factor, who come into this with high name id. Who have this celebrity factor, who come into this with high name idi said it is a purple state, but is it . Is it a presumption given that it . Is it a presumption given that it went so convincingly for donald trump last time . It did and i think this election cycle will tell us a lot about the future of iowa. The state voted for barack obama twice, before flipping to President Trump. We have Something Like 30 counties across the state who supported 0bama twice before flipping to President Trump. There are many counties that are swing counties, swing regions, so are swing counties, swing regions, so interesting to see how the voters go this time. Good to have you with us. Go this time. Good to have you with us. Im sure well see plenty of you over the coming months. We say in this country that the conservative leadership contest comes down to 160,000 people who are not really representative of the rest of the country, and so it is with iowa. Yeah, the population of iowa is 90 whyte, 3 black, the rest hispanic and asian, but predominantly whyte. In that respect it does not represent the rest of america, clearly much more diverse in the rest of america. I love going to iowa in the Election Campaign because you get to engage with the candidates. They will turn up in somebodys living room for dinner they force the candidates to go out and speak to individuals. Iowa is important in every election cycle. The candidates, asjoe biden has said, are going to be spending a lot of time there. Donald trump says china reneged on the terms of a potential trade deal with america and needs to return to those conditions. The president has threatened to put more tariffs on chinese exports to the United States if xijinping doesnt meet him at the g20 injapan at the end ofjune. The Trump Administration says its practice of using tariffs is to balance the trade deficit and fight beijings unfair trade practices. Some of the retaliatory tariffs are already hitting american businesses. 0ne place is wine country in california because tariffs have almost doubled the price of American Wine exports to china. Sophie long has been to see some of those whove been impacted. The lush landscape of californias wine country. Across this fertile land, concern is growing, as Family Businesses feel the impact of the tension between the worlds two biggest economies. Right here you guys will see a Sauvignon Blanc block planted in 1999. Ijoined an eco tour at honigs vineyard. Customers learn about their sustainable winemaking. Its a crucial source of income for the Third Generation producers. Their business with china has collapsed completely. 0ur China Business has gone to zero. The top year was 1000 cases, and now were back down to zero. So in ten, a little over ten years, its gone up and then down. A bottle that used to cost 100 on the shelf at retail in china now costs 200 and thats not for any fault, anything different that we are doing. Weve gone to china, we see the market is interested in our wine, and then you get one more round of these stupid tariffs, theyre just impacting us for no reason. China is the Fastest Growing and will likely soon become the largest wine market in the world. Meanwhile, sales at home are declining, which is starting to rattle nerves. The older wine loving generation are retiring. Millennials seem to prefer spirits or recently legalised marijuana. Another layer of tariffs is another unwelcome challenge. The first time, its like, oh, my god, what are we going to do . And the second time, i think weve been here. The third time, you know, itsjust piling on. You cant get any deeper than that. You think the point that the Chinese Market is at, youve got a growing middle class, people who are going to be buying wine who wouldnt have been before, thats the time you need to be there, right . Exactly, now is the time we want to be there and be able to develop that and so, you know, ill be going this fall and continue to bang the drum about california wines. The great hope here is that an agreement will be reached that will erase the tariffs that existed in the first place. Then wine producers could end up the winners in this trade war. The Wine Institute says as californians, they think big and theyre confident that will carry them through. Its just part of our nature to dream big, to be freethinkers. We apply that to wine growing and winemaking, and what comes out of it is this incredibly rich and exciting wine industry. We rise to that challenge. And thats part of what keeps us going forward. President nixon helped put napa wine on the world map when he raised a glass of it in a toast to peace with china. Those who work in the Valleys Vineyards hope that President Trump will do similar, and soon. For more on the impact tariffs are having werejoined now from washington by neil irwin, senior economic correspondent for the new york times. Thanks forjoining us. We heard joe biden today talking about ta riffs joe biden today talking about tariffs in iowa, saying they are hitting. American farmers are being hit. Is this the Political Landscape in which this economic issueis landscape in which this economic issue is going to before . landscape in which this economic issue is going to before . I think so. Issue is going to before . I think so. This is an area where the democrats have fertile area of attack on President Trump as we head into the general election next year. They can attack from the right and the left. You can say these tariffs are damaging for businesses who need predictability and low taxes, and yet they arent achieving what the president promised for workers, so the labour left and the pro Business Community can find something to like in going after trump on tariffs. Community can find something to like in going after trump on tariffsm the context of mexico and china and mrtrump the context of mexico and china and mr trump today is saying that he has the possibility of imposing more ta riffs the possibility of imposing more tariffs on china because the ones on mexico worked so well to produce a result, is mr trump right in making the calculation that both countries depend on the american, on American Economy and markets and therefore have to give into the white houses demands . therefore have to give into the white houses demands . I would draw a big distinction between mexico and china. Mexico, its economic role is largely as an exporter to the us and it had more to lose by allowing these tariffs to go into effect and escalate as the president threatened. China is playing the long game. A much bigger country and economy. I think were going to see what happens when president xi meets with President Trump in a few weeks. This is not an area where the chinese are likely to blink or back down lightly. It could be a tense situation for a long time. Weve been talking about farmers being disproportionately hit in the programme so farand disproportionately hit in the programme so far and joe biden has said the president likes to play tough when someone else is absorbing the pain, which is true. But weve had farmers on the programme who are sticking with the president because they believe in America First and they believe in America First and they are prepared to suck it up. So is this an area wherejoe biden can drive a wedge . I think it is. When you talk to farmers, steelworkers, Industrial Workers who supported drunk and most of them are still in his side but it doesnt take much of a swing to change the election, especially in those states that were close in 2016 who supported trump. It is close, even if most farmers and factory workers are sticking to their guns. Uc in the polling there is a leakage of support, even if the typical farmer is still on team trump, it doesnt ta ke is still on team trump, it doesnt take many to peel away before you get a swing result in a state like iowa. A lot happening around tariffs, the president has been speaking about it. Tariffs, the president has been speaking about it. Thanks for joining us. In the conservative leadership contest, three more candidates launched campaigns today. There was a sprinkling of policy but in truth the only issue that really matters in this race is brexit. And where each of these candidates will stand on october 31st, if there is still no deal with the eu. There are ten candidates in the race. The next round of voting is on thursday. The three candidates launching today were andrea leadsome, mark harper and rory stewart, who would all be seen at this stage as the outsiders. And they all have very different brexit proposals. The next Prime Minister must have a clear plan for a managed exit by the end of october. They must have the negotiating ability to deliver it, and above all else, they must have a positive, uplifting vision for the next chapter in our nations great history. The great prancing elephant in the tent is of course this vision that i dont call populism, that i call negativism, summed up in that phrase, no deal. But its notjust no to a deal, its no everything. My preference is to leave with a deal because i think thats better for the country, i think its better for the integrity of the united kingdom, and i think its better for our politics. The bbcs chief Political Correspondent vicki young joins us now from westminster. Given that the 125,000 conservative Party Members and activists who are going to choose the next leader tend to be more pro brexit, is there room in this leadership contest for the kind of pro deal, softer brexit message that weve been hearing from some of the candidates today . think its very difficult. Before they get to the stage where they have the tory Party Members voting for them of course they have to get mps to support them. If you take rory stewart for example, he still trying to talk about getting theresa mays deal through parliament, he doesnt want no deal in any circumstances. He doesnt have much support from tory mps, so its difficult for them. The people who have the most support at the moment from mps, the declared number, are people like Boris Johnson, from mps, the declared number, are people like borisjohnson, the clear frontrunner, someone who says that on october the 31st, the uk must leave with or without a deal. That is going down well with mps and it will go down well with the conservative Party Membership. There was a plea from mark harper to say, lets be honest about this. His point is that many candidates talk about renegotiating a deal and he says it is impossible to get that done by october the 31st and there will be no commission in place over the summer, so they should be honest with people. The problem for all the candidates, they are promising things that they cant necessarily deliver. Precisely. If you take away the 31st of october and whether it can be done by then, you have to talk about the negotiation and they all seem to be thinking that there is something to do on the withdrawal agreement. We heard from Michel Barnier on friday who said no, it isnt going to be reopened. This is Jean Claude Juncker today. It is a treaty between the uk and the European Union. It has to be respected, it has to be respected by whomsoever shall be the next british Prime Minister. Does that mean there will be no renegotiations . There will be no negotiations as far as the contenders are concerned. Yeah. He is the commissioner and the leaders may have a different view. Yes, a lot of the candidates here are still talking about technology on the Northern Irish border because they say thats the only way to fix this. The commission is clear that they dont think that is in existence at the moment, so that as a solution doesnt seem to be one that can happen very soon. This is a major issue. Some candidates say that a new Prime Minister brings a new dynamic, a different person in the room and those who are arguing that we must leave at the end of 0ctober, what may say that if the eu leaders really believe that a british Prime Minister is serious about that, then that could be the thing that opens this up and means they can be some kind of change. Whoever gets the job is going to face the same challenges, and one of those particularly is the Hung Parliament and not having the numbers to get through a no deal, for example. Labour are not exactly sitting on the sidelines on their hands. Tomorrow they will try and move parliament towards stopping no deal. Yeah, thats right. Before you may remember that there were these parliamentary shenanigans over the last couple of years, backbenchers and seizing control of the parliamentary agenda and even passing a piece of legislation, very unusual, difficult to do, but they did it. They hope to try it again. Tomorrow, they will be a vote meaning that on the 25th ofjune, if passed, they can seize control of the agenda and try and get through something that. No deal. Its not clear what it would be, to force a new Prime Minister to ask for another delay to brexit . That may not be granted by some of the countries in the eu. Still not entirely clear about the dynamics of that, the detail of this but it shows that parliament is not willing to allow a new Prime Minister to ta ke to allow a new Prime Minister to take the country to a no deal brexit. We watch that with interest. Thank you very much. If the points we re thank you very much. If the points were going to the style in the campaign, rory stewart would be roaring away with it. The big tent, with him as the ringmaster, a lot of metaphors. I thought he would pull a rabbit out of the hat. Here he is in downing street trying to win a very important endorsement. Very if you get larry the cat, you are in, right . 0h, get larry the cat, you are in, right . Oh, thats cold the cat knows just saying cats are very biddable, so you should come with treats in your pocket. Tory mps sometimes go for the trees as well. Kim jong uns half brother, murdered in malaysia two years ago, may have been working as an informant for the cia. The details are revealed in a new book written by anna fifield, the beijing bureau chief for the Washington Post the story goes that kim jong nam had became an informant for the cia and would occasionally travel to singapore and malaysia to meet his handlers. In 2017 kimjong nam died after two women smeared a nerve agent on his face at kuala lumpur airport. Bruce klingner is from the heritage foundations Asian Studies center. He spent 20 years at the cia and Defense Intelligence agency and was division chief for north korea. Is this true, was kim jong uns half brother and American Asset . is this true, was kim jong uns half brother and American Asset . I was in the cia many years ago but it is certainly possible. The cia would have been very interested in any information about kim jong un or the regime, especially when the father, kimjong un, died in 2011. Very little was known about kim jong un. Every one of his swiss classmates was interviewed and i presume the us would have interviewed the sushi chef, and even dennis rodman, who was the american with most face time with kim jong un. America was the american with most face time with kimjong un. America would have been interested in any information. Getting closer to that regime is something they would have liked. President trump was asked about this today and his response referred to his recent communication, hed only recently his recent communication, hed only rece ntly got his recent communication, hed only recently got a letter from kim jong un. I see that and ijust received a beautiful letter from kim jong un andl beautiful letter from kim jong un and i think that the relationship goes very well. I appreciate the letter. I saw the information about the cia, with respect to his half brother, and i would tell him that would not happen under my auspices, thats for sure. I wouldnt let that happen under my auspices. President trump saying he wouldnt have let this half brother become a cia asset. Im sure the cia would love to have someone like this as an asset. Would they really expect the president to say hands off . Thats concerning, having a president trying to curtail intelligence information operations. The president has also been curtailing us enforcement of our laws by capping us sanctions. He reversed an action by the Us Treasury Department action by the Us Treasury Department a few months ago where the treasury had sanctioned two chinese shipping companies. Having the president involved in intelligence operations, i would find of concern. involved in intelligence operations, i would find of concern. I think what will leave many looking from the outside feeling a bit uncomfortable is the fact we are talking about a man who was essentially murdered by the regime ata time essentially murdered by the regime at a time when we are hearing about other executions within the country, and the president must get these briefings as well. Right, the stories that come out of north korea are always difficult to verify. We had the story about senior officials being purged, and now coming back to theirjobs. Some who we thought executed may not have been executed. That has happened in the past. 0verall, that has happened in the past. Overall, the reason those stories are so viable is because this leader as well as his predecessors have repeatedly executed and pursed officials around them, sometimes in exotic ways. Purged officials. It isa exotic ways. Purged officials. It is a brutal regime and kim jong exotic ways. Purged officials. It is a brutal regime and kimjong nam was seen as a is a brutal regime and kimjong nam was seen as a threat by his brother, even though kim jong nam was seen as a threat by his brother, even though kimjong nam had announced any kind of role in the regime, and had pleaded to be left alone, in return for promises that he wasnt going to try to be a leader in exile. 0k, he wasnt going to try to be a leader in exile. Ok, thanks very much forjoining us. Fascinating to get you in on this day when the president referred to the spy and said that he wouldnt let the cia have a high profile spy in north korea. Now to something completely different. I am depressed. 0fficially depressed. Im sorry. When i was kid the stories that fired my imagination were the stories of magic and potions, wizadry and hocus pocus. Today the Oxford University press unveiled the childrens word of the year. And what is it, what strange new word rises to the top of the list brexit give me strength. Last year it was plastic. The year before that it was trump. What is going on . Can we give children back their childhood, please . The publishers lexicographers they are the people who compile dictionaries analyse thousands of entries to the annual childrens short story competition. And this year they found a marked change. The word brexit was used a18 times compared to 89 times in the previous year. Story titles included the cat who solved brexit, aliens in brexit and a unicorn called brexit. In fact, unicorns are the most popular creature, mentioned 15,000 times. Please, write better stories, guys dont bring brexit into your childrens lives, they dont need it. This is beyond 100 days from the bbc. Coming up for viewers on the bbc news channel and bbc world news. We will hear from the journalists who feel that british politicians should do more to support the north. It hasnt felt like june over the last couple of days. In fact, some places so far this week have had more rainfall than they would normally expect in the whole month ofjune. 0ver normally expect in the whole month ofjune. Over 90 millimetres in parts of lincolnshire. Low pressure has been in charge of the scene. The low pressure very slow moving, cloud spiralling around it. This cloud has brought rain today in parts of lincolnshire, yorkshire, north west england and wales. More wet weather here as we go deeper into the evening and overnight. The rain extending further north, getting into south east scotland. Some rain may move into parts of northern ireland. It will be windy, especially over the northern half of the uk. Temperatures ranging from eight, to 12 degrees. Low pressure still very much in charge of the scene through tomorrow. A couple of weather fronts to point out. This one has been moving slowly north west over the last couple of days bringing rain into southern scotla nd days bringing rain into southern scotland and northern ireland. Another area of wet weather pushing across the near continent and thats going to work into parts of Eastern England through the day. Really heavy bursts of rain developing here again. Even away from those areas of persistent rain, some scattered showers and thunderstorms which may in themselves give enough rain in a short space of time to cause further issues with flooding. Thats the story across southern england, some showers in wales, persistent rain in Northern England. Some rain in northern ireland. To the north of that, a lot of dry weather and some sunny spells in scotland but windy with the wind coming from the north east, feeling decidedly cool. 0n north east, feeling decidedly cool. On thursday, well see the rain making more progress into North Western scotland, maybe not getting into the western isles. Elsewhere it is sunny spells and slow moving downpours, 10 17. Low pressure is still with us as we approach the end of the week. They went will be lighter and coming from the south west, so temperatures are going to climb. Unsettled, but turning dry to the south and east through the weekend. This is beyond 100 days, with me katty kay, washington, Christian Fraser is in london. Our top stories. Donald trump and the democratsjill biden are both campaigning in iowa today and it has already turned personal. Is this a preview of the race . Now he is threatening more of them. Coming up in the next half hour, conservative leadership candidates have launched campaigns to become the next Prime Minister. Ten contenders are now in the race. And signed say almost 600 plant species have become extinct in the last 150 years. He went to threatening for the future of all of life on earth . 33 newspapers and websites from across Northern England have joined forces to demand the government powers up the north and stops stops treating one half of the country as an after thought. The Manchester Evening News and Yorkshire Post were among those to lead on the campaign yesterday, demanding a reversal of the widening social, health, and economic inequalities with the south, that have grown under successive governments. Despite promises by the 2010 Coalition Government to transform the region into a Northern Powerhouse funding for Public Infrastructure is still very low when compared to the south. Over the last four years spending on public transport per person has risen more quickly in london than it has in the north. Last yearjust over £400 was spent per person in the north on transport by the government, compared to over a £1000 per londoner. Well yesterday when we talked about this, someone asked me on twitter why i had not found someone from the north to talk about it. So i have risen to the challenge. Tom richmond, is comment editor at the Yorkshire Post and one of the campaigns organisers he joins us from leeds. It is good to have you with us. Thank you very much for saying i sometimes. It is impressive for 33 reading newspapers in the north until i gather this way. Coming together this way. The new party leader, it is a strong possibility of having another general election in britain within the next year and a collective decision is now is the best time possible to try and get the north and coast and investment in our region on the agenda. Do any of the cabinets running in the race and there are ten of them convince you that they had a mission for rebalancing the country . They have a lot of work still to do, since the launch of the campaign, they have been there have been encouraging words from some leading candidates, but they have a lot more to do to prevent promises can be taken seriously. Borisjohnson, the front runner is still to launch his campaign. I have heard making the north more dynamic and over successive politicians do you think the words of encouragement you have heard during this leadership race means something or are they election promises that do not actually matter very much . Beef fear is that the election promises, the current transport secretary was making promises on the electrification and the 2017 election when he had already taken a decision to cancel it in question so trust is very well and that is another reason why these newspapers have come together to power at the north campaign and persuade all parties to change the narrative and realise it is a great opportunity and the north. A brilliant story to tell and 15 Million People live and work here. And the economy generates pounds per year and it is achieving considerable success and spite of the government. What we are trying to do is persuade westminster and beat london based politicians that so beat london based politicians that so much more can be done and achieved for the good of the whole country if they invest in our region. If that is the case why do you think it is that there isnt the Government Investment that you hope there was . What is happening crazily you only have to look at the intervention today, from the former cabinet minister born in yorkshire. She said in the house of commons that treasury is not fit for purpose and the political system was not fit for purpose and counsellors fighting against each other and she said in Parliament Today that the National Leaders are favouring their pet projects and not looking at issues such as social mobility. This campaign is not just such as social mobility. This campaign is notjust about infrastructure. It is about equipping the next generation with the skills that they will need to prosper and a digital economy. Joining us from leeds, thank you. We began this programme talking from iola and we have people in the country, america, missing regions have been forgotten and the regions that produce steel and coal and i guess what you have heard and bring the is bit similar. Transport is terrible. I went to a game and there we re terrible. I went to a game and there were thousands of personal fans waiting for a train to take them back to manchester to the main hub and there they were, packed on the platform and the train just like this came rolling into the station and it only had two carriages and no headrest, they just about squeeze the fans all onto this training and they had to squeeze the conductor after them and they were in hyste ri cs. After them and they were in hysterics. They cannot believe how poor the transport was. Probably many of them had never seen a train like that because they are so much better down in the south. When i went back to manchester to watch birmingham, asi went back to manchester to watch birmingham, as i get out of manchester by 5pm on the evening and saturday because there were no trains after five saturday because there were no trains afterfive p m. It is quite extraordinary, this is the north of the country with all the industrial powerhouse cities and they are not linked. It is an absolute shambles. The next Prime Minister really does have to focus. Lets see where the campaign goes. As loudly as northern businesses and newspapers try and catch the attention of the conservative leadership contenders theres another group with which they are in fierce competition. And thats the 160,000 strong conservative Party Members who will vote in the leadership contest. 0ur Political Correspondent alex forsyth has this report from bracknell. Sandwiches, anybody . Meet some of the men and women who will take that countrys next Prime Minister. We have the chance to really change things and it is notjust the party that is going to change, it is going to be the whole country. They know whoever wins this contest will have a lot on their plate . The number one item on everyones lips deliver brexit. The conservatives from bracknell willjoin members of tory associations across the uk in choosing the final two candidates. We need someone who will be very strong. Members of the public had to join three months ago to get a vote. Here, like elsewhere in the country, it has been claimed hardline brexiteers have signed up. One of the Campaign Groups that back brexit and the referendum, leave. Eu has been encouraging people including former ukip members to join the conservative party so they can vote for the next leader and influence its direction. Some current and former tory mps have claimed it as a right wing takeover. If they vote to leave, they vote to leave. The chairman of bracknell conservatives says there is no evidence of that. We had an increase in membership, are they right wingers . Now, a lot of members we see certainly coming into our association has been people who are previously members who have come back again or they are lifelong conservative voters who say i want to have a say and get involved. She rejoined the organisation last year. I decided to come back in because i have a voice and wanted to be heard. Some critics say more broadly the party does not represent the population. What about the people who say the conservative party is too old and too white . We have a very strong group of members who are quite prepared to walk the streets in theirfrom all ethnic backgrounds. I think all parties have the struggle of an aged membership. The conservative party age may be in late 505 but labour for example, is mid 505. The Party Chairman insists there is a range of views. Is it fair that a party that is mainly supportive of brexit gets to pick a Prime Minister that will represent a country that is divided . First of all, there is over 160,000 members across the country and they all have their own views on brexit but actually this leadership election we are already seeing is about much more wide ranging issues and that. But for bracknell, a candidate focused on leaving the eu is key. I think we have to stick to that 315t of october deadline. We need to see that they are Strong Enough to take britain through brexit and beyond. It is the tory grassroots that will decide in the end who gets the job. Alex forsyth, bbc news, bracknell. And they will be watching very closely tomorrow because finally the front runner Boris Johnson closely tomorrow because finally the front runner borisjohnson enters the race and is launching the campaign tomorrow along with javid. That will mean that we have two of the final ten who have put their name in the ring. And thursday is the next round of voting. Lets see how many get eliminated on thursday. 0xfam is a name renowned the world over. It is one of britains leading charities. But today it was handed an official warning by the British Charities commission, for a disastrous failure of management. A large part of the commissions inquiry focused on the charitys work in haiti after the 2010 earquake, where staff including the former country director had paid for young. Paid for young prostitutes. The report says that the charity had failed to investigate fully the allegations despite receiving emails from two children who claimed to have been beaten and abused. 0xfam has repeatedly apologised and today its chair of trustees described the episode as shameful. Lets go live to haiti and our correspondent will grant. Of course they would have been familiar with some of the allegations and what are they making out todays report . Allegations and what are they making out todays report . If the rebuke from the terry commission was strongly worded as you can imagine it was an Even Stronger words from the haitian government. I have spoken to the foreign minister who said that it showed that the Charity Sector in this country had been tarnished by what he had called a shameful group of sexual predators and even paedophiles. Really strong words and it is hardly a surprise when you think exactly what took place in the abuse has taken place, carried out by men and very powerful roles who are extensively here to help the most vulnerable after the devastating earthquake in 2010. They have a difficultjob on their hand as well because the aid agencies are so as well because the aid agencies are so important to the haitian economy. I was wondering that because 0xfam has been banned by the haitian government from operating in haiti because of the scandal. Has other aid agencies manage to fill the role that 0xfam was praying. How is this impacting their who were depending on 0xfams aid work . And a sense i think the first thing that has come from it is that the government are scrutinising more closely all of the ngos coming to this country and all the aid workers who are operating here. There has supposedly been an improvement on how they operate on the ground and whether that has been seen the ground and whether that has been seen out in the countryside and haiti where it is remote where some of the poorest live and it is a difficult question to answer without spending a decent amount of time out there and seeing the aid agencies at work and there is certainly a lot more consciousness because obviously the tragedy of the 2010 earthquake was so the tragedy of the 2010 earthquake was so huge and the amount of money washing around the country is so massive that it created a space where many abuses could take place and that has certainly been focused oni and that has certainly been focused on i would say. Another organisation looking after its own reputation rather than the victims. Thank you. Survivors and those who lost loved ones in the Grenfell Tower fire have announced theyre suing three companies who manufactured insulation, cladding and refigerator in the residential tower block. 72 people died and many more were injured when the fire broke out in the tower block in london nearly two years ago. The wrongful death suits have been filed against arconic, celotex and whirlpool, all of which have headquarters in the us. Spokespeople for all three companies had no comment on the litigation. Gary 0donoghue is in philadelphia for a spouse. How does this work regally because the seed has been brought in the uk but against the american headquartered companies . The suit is being brought here in the us, here in philadelphia and pennsylvania and they did not believe there is any problem with that going ahead here. Even though there is a public inquiry, and statutory inquiry and criminal investigations going on in britain. What they are alleging here effectively is that they provided this material, the cladding and insulation knowing that it was flammable and they are alleging that pain so the material when it would not be allowed to be used in residential buildings here in you ask. The process now is that they will be hearing within five or six months but if it goes to trial and it isa months but if it goes to trial and it is a big if, it may not be allowed to go that far but if it goes to trial here, it could take about two years before it gets before a jury. Whirlpool is known for fridges and it was a refrigerator who started the fire. The lawyers, there is a set of layers here and pennsylvania and another set from ohio and they are working effectively pro bono and they are working on the half of 69 of the 72 families, so not all but quite a lot of those people who lost their lives and family members lost their lives and family members lost their lives and also for 177 of the survivors. They are taking this case for a good majority, a large majority of those who were affected. It isa majority of those who were affected. It is a Product Liability case so it is about faulty products in the case of the cladding and whirlpool as he mentioned was a hot point, the fridge freezer. Effectively they say, the layers that is that if this comes to court it will be probably the biggest Product Liability case to come to court and us history. Gary 0donoghue and philadelphia for us, at this does come to court they are saying this will be a wake up call for corporations who refuse to face at the damage they cause or change their ways even after horrific disasters like Grenfell Tower. So lets see what happens to that case. This is beyond 100 days. Still to come. On a small portugese island cars are being used to store power for the future. It could be the start of a global trend. A man has told the inquiry into contaminated blood how six of his siblings were infected in the scandal. Thousands of people were given blood infected with hepatitis c or hiv in the 1970s and 80s. John cornes said what happened destroyed his mother. Sophie hutchinson reports. Flanked by his son and lawyer, he arrived at the inquiry this morning. Here to tell his story about the devastation infected blood products happened on his family. He is one of six brothers with haemophilia and in the 70s and 80s he they retreated with infected blood. the 70s and 80s he they retreated with infected blood. I think she would be alive if it werent for what happened. She is a strong woman and the tragedy has brought to ripped her heart out. He described how the local press hounded them, calling them the aids family. He said it was very bad at his brothers gary, funeral. Said it was very bad at his brothers gary, funeral. Hiding in the bushes and it was really infuriating as all. They were taking pictures and did not ask permission or anything and it was the grieving aids family. John told the inquiry about his concern each time for the other six brothers. Watching gary die, ican other six brothers. Watching gary die, i can remember watching and looking at gordon at garys funeral and looking at gordon at another funeral. It was bad. Ijust felt sorry for him. I do not know if the word sorry is sufficient enough. He regularly visits the grave of his for a dead brothers and did not want to give evidence to the inquiry but he said he needed to do it for the widerfamily he said he needed to do it for the wider family and is looking for the apology for the harm caused to them. Sylvie hutchinson, bbc news. 600 plant species have been lost from the wild in the past 250 years according to a study by britains royal botanic gardens, kew and stockholm university. Scientists say this is happening 500 times faster than what would occur naturally. We will never see plants like the chile sandalwood or the pink flowered st helena olive tree again. Researchers think the main cause is the destruction of Natural Habitats such as cutting down forests and converting land into fields forfarming. Joining us now to discuss this is associate professor in ecology dr rob salguero gomez from the university of oxford. Give us some give us some sense give us some sense of the scale of this since the Industrial Revolution that things have speeded up since the Industrial Revolution. That is correct, good afternoon and thank you for having me. Research from the university of stockholm, and published a paper which is a journal showing the rate at which plant species are being lost due to extinction has increased tremendously particularly as sin and they reach the age of the Industrial Revolution 250 years ago, and every day 2. 3 plant species are being lost on average. People are very focused on average. People are very focused on the loss of big animals, elephants and rhinoceros, but people are not as focused on the loss of plans and what it means for them. To get people to understand the risks of these findings . That is absolutely right, and biology and in society, there has pervasive biases on what we are interested in exploring and we therefore have felt a pull to study a life that is similarto us, mammals a pull to study a life that is similar to us, mammals and birds particularly have the attention of much of the research. Trying to a nswer much of the research. Trying to answer your question, the biodiversity implant is really simple, look at what we had for brea kfast . Simple, look at what we had for breakfast . 0r simple, look at what we had for breakfast . Or maybe in your studio, where are you holding your papers on top of, at a table which was probably made out of i am going to guess it would. What are the clothes that everyone watching and the show are currently wearing, made out of cotton and all of those materials come from plants. I think a lot of people would agree and we are more indifferent to plant loss than animals because we have a greater connection to animals and some way. I was looking at the figures and they say this could be a conservative estimate because of course there are other plants which are dying out and there are plans which group and they called the living dead. Why did they call them the living dead . The living dead is really interesting. These are plans that had supposedly gone extinct for a long time and then they have reappeared. What these researchers did in stockholm university, they very carefully evaluated these records of local extinction and global extinction and reappearance of different plant species. These zombies that once upon a time where thought to have gone extinct but have reappeared. Because of some conservation efforts. Thank you very much for coming on the programme. Let you where and what you eat for brea kfast all let you where and what you eat for breakfast all connected to the pla nts breakfast all connected to the plants around us. This is something we should be paying attention to. The Little Island of porto santo near madeira has begun an experiment to use power in the batteries of electric cars to back up the islands electricity grid. The cars recharge their batteries from solar power when the suns shining and then sell that electricity back to the island grid for use at night to power peoples homes. From porto sa nto, heres roger harrabin. The savage beauty of porto santo attracts tourists who love nature. But people need energy, and the way it is generated here is damaging nature. This pollution is coming from the diesel generator that powers the islands homes. Transporting the diesel is expensive, and its Fuelling Climate change. The local government want clean and Renewable Energy instead. But wind power and solar power ebb and flow. So they need a way of storing energy for use at night time. Here is the chosen solution. The electric car. But not as we know it. In future, electric vehicles here will be fitted with a reversible battery that Stores Energy for the electricity grid. So how does a reversible battery work . When the sun is shining, the electricity flows out of the grid, down the cable and into the car. It is stored in the battery until night time when it flows back out of the car, up the cable and into the grid to power peoples homes. It is a huge innovation. The car is smart, so it keeps enough power for itself to be driven. A car is only used part time for its mobility function and the rest of the time it is available next to an electricity grid to be used for the grid. The firm that is installing the reversible battery system believes the technology will transform our relationship with our cars. So what were doing here is exciting because normally you think if you own a car it will cost a fortune, a lot of money. If you have a car that feeds energy into the grid you can earn money during the time it is parked, if there is no Renewable Energy available, you can feed it back and earn money. It changes the whole idea of owning a car. 0n porto santo, some police are already powered by electricity. To run an effective backup for the local grid, half the cars on the island, like this electric taxi, will need to store power as well as using. So is this the road to the future . Well, a couple of years ago if you had suggested that car batteries could play a major part in supporting an electricity grid, many people would have laughed. But that is exactly what has happened. The electricity revolution is going to create a lot more surprises. Roger harrabin, bbc news, porto sa nto. There are 38 million cars in the uk, imagine if they were used to store electricity in that way and put it back into the grid . My car for instance, my electric car, have i told you i have an electric car . No, ido told you i have an electric car . No, i do not think anyone has ever had that before. I was thinking that you and the electric car that nobody knows about you go to that island because it looks so sunny and nice and they can use the solar power to power at the battery which you might be able to do all the time in the uk. We should talk sometime about how we charge from our houses and land and across the pavement. Not very easy but that is for another day. I think they could just rerun another episode where we have talked about that before. But we will see you back here tomorrow. Hello and good evening, and has not felt much like jan over the last couple of days but in fact some places it has had more rainfall than they normally expect over the month ofjune. They normally expect over the month of june. Low pressure has they normally expect over the month ofjune. Low pressure has been in charge and very slow moving areas of cloud spiralling around it, and this particular cloud here has brought raintree today and parts of lincolnshire and yorkshire. Wales as well and you see further wet weather here as we had deeper into the evening and overnight. That rain also extending northwards and eventually getting into scotland and some rain may clip into parts of northern ireland. Breezy particularly across northern half of the uk and this temperature is ranging from eight 12 degrees. Low pressure ranging from eight 12 degrees. Low pressure still very much in charge of the scene through tomorrow and a couple of weather fronts to point out. Thats one that has been tracking northwest very slowly over the last couple of days will bring rain and also noticed another area of wet weather pushing across the continent and it will work its way into parts of Eastern England as we go through the day. Really heavy bursts of rain developing here once again and even away from those sounds and persistent rain, scattered showers and thunderstorms which fit in themselves give enough rain and the short space of time to cause further issues with flooding and that is the story across southern england and parts of wales and more persistent rain for parts of england and to the north of that, a lot of dry weather. Some sunny spells in northern scotland but it will be razie with the breeze coming from the northeast and it will feel decidedly cool. 0n from the northeast and it will feel decidedly cool. On thursday, we will see that rain making more progress into northern and western scotland maybe not quite getting into the western isles. The story of sunny spells and slow heavy downpour is 10 spells and slow heavy downpour is 10 and low pressure still with us as we approach the end of the week. Also tending to come from the southwest, temperatures will climb a little bit and i stay pretty u nsettled little bit and i stay pretty unsettled and stays increasingly dry to the south and east as we go through the weekend. This is bbc news. Im ben brown. The headlines at eight. Three more conservatives set out their stalls in the leadership contest rory stewart is the latest to make his pitch. To stop the uk leaving the European Union without an agreement. 0xfam is given an official warning by the charity watchdog, following allegations of serious Sexual Misconduct by its staff in haiti.
