Of Nursultan Nazarbayev in march. The very next day they decided to rename the capital, astana, in mr nazarbayevs honour. It is now called. Nur sultan. For many this was a step too far. Nur sultan is not my city i have a choice, chants this young kazakh girl in a video that went viral on social media. More protests followed, but dissent is not tolerated in kazakhstan. Police dispersed the demonstrations. Dozens were arrested. You cant run away from the truth, hashtag for Fair Elections, reads this banner, held by two activists at the almaty marathon in april. Both gotjailed for 15 days for violating the Public Assembly law. And this young man was detained for holding a blank sheet of paper. But the government says that freedom of expression exists in kazakhstan. Translation nobody is tightening the screws. Nobody is being persecuted or repressed. But the state has to defend its own interests. If our candidate wins we will continue the democratic reforms in the country. The kazakh youth are unconvinced. As people i think we kind of woke up and we realise that we have the power to do something and we need to take part in the life of our country. These young people have gathered here to sing together, to recite poems, they describe it, they call it seruen, which in kazakh means a walk about together. Unsanctioned protests or any sort of public gatherings are not allowed in kazakhstan. So this is an alternative, a creative way to get together to make their voices heard. Change, we want to change they sing. The kind of change that these president ial elections are unlikely to bring. Rayhan demytrie, bbc news, almaty. In mexico, president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has promised his government will offer Central American migrants seeking asylum in the United States humanitarian aide and opportunities for work. He made the promise at a rally held in the northern Mexican Border city of tijuana, just south of the us city of san diego. It comes off the back of an agreement with washington to avert us trade tarrifs. The two countries say they agreed to reduce the number of migrants crossing the border into america. Us President Donald Trump had threatened to impose trade tariffs if there was no agreement. Speaking to his supporters, president Lopez Obrador said that mexico wanted to work with the us but also warned he wouldnt allow anyone to attack the mexican economy. The leaders of the Pro Democracy Movement in sudan have called for a nationwide campaign of civil disobedience starting on sunday. Their call comes after three figures in groups opposing the government, including a politician, were arrested. The bbcs africa security correspondent, tomi oladipo, says the arrests come at a key moment in mediation talks. They come just after ethiopians Prime Minister visited sudan. He was coming in as a mediator to bring together the Opposition Alliance and the military. When he spoke to both sides, to each side rather, they seemed like they were open to dialogue, although the opposition gave a list of conditions before they would speak. But the military followed that up by ordering these arrests and three opposition leaders arrested in just a matter of hours. So i think that only raises the tension now in sudan. Thousands of venezuelans have been crossing the re opened border with colombia to buy food, medicine and other essentials. The economic crisis in venezuela has brought about acute shortages and more than four Million People have left the country. The conservative mp michael gove, whos one of the top candidates to be the next party leader and Prime Minister, says he deeply regrets taking cocaine more than 20 years ago. He told the daily mail it happened at several social events while he was working as a journalist. Mr gove says it was a mistake and he wants conservatives tojudge him on his record as a politician. Our Political Correspondent chris mason reports. If you see yourself as the face of the countrys future, you can expect plenty of questions about your own past. I can confirm that i will be putting my name forward to be Prime Minister of this country. For mr gove recently, to here in the late 90s is about the time he now admits he cocaine. He told the daily mail. Will, though, those who choose our next Prime Minister conservative mps and members agree . Ultimately, this is an admission of illegality, but i guess the key question is, will it make any difference . Times have changed, and this isnt the devastating blow for Michael Goves campaign that it might once have been. Having said that, he is in for some very awkward conservations with party members, who tend to be very socially conservative on this issue. And that will be a drag on his campaign. The flip side of that is that its dragged boris back into the limelight over class a drugs. Have you snorted cocaine . Laughter. Unsuccessfully, a long time ago. This was borisjohnson 14 years ago. I sneezed. A very small quantity. It was a long, long time ago. I think its probably a disgusting and ridiculous thing to do and what else can i say about it . Three years later, he said it was simply untrue that he had taken cocaine. Other candidates have had admissions to make. Rory stewart has apologised for smoking opium at a wedding in iran 15 years ago. Andrea leadsom said she smoked cannabis at university. Dominic raab said he had as well. Jeremy hunter said he thinks he had a cannabis base to drink while backpacking in india. This afternoon in Michael Goves constituency in surrey people appeared relaxed about their mps past behaviour. To me, its not relevant. I think this isjust people are trying to slur, just to bring him down. Not really fair to do that. Personally speaking, i dont think it will have any real impact. Remember, the race to replace theresa may and move on here by the end of next month hasnt yet formally begun. That happens on monday. So the scrutiny, the awkward questions, the probing of each candidates past is onlyjust beginning. Mr gove and his rivals are now in a breathless battle for the topjob. Chris mason, bbc news. Irish fishermen are being warned they face arrest by scottish authorities if theyre caught fishing around the tiny Atlantic Island of rockall which lies more than 200 miles west of the hebrides. Ownership of the rock has long been disputed but scottish ministers now say they have a duty to defend the interests of their fishermen. Laura maxwell reports. Inhabited only by seabirds, rockall is a big lump of granite miles from anywhere. But the waters around it are rich fishing grounds for haddock, monkfish, and squid worth millions of pounds a year. Its access to this catch which the Scottish Government says its defending. In a statement, they told us. We would not like to see conflict but in this case its straight and clean, its a matter of illegality we would not like to see conflict but in this case its straight and clean, its a matter of illegality under International Law and wed like it fixed. The uk claimed sovereignty in 1955 with Royal Marines hoisting the union flag. But the ownership of rockall has been disputed for decades and irish fishermen maintain theyre working illegally. Theyre extremely worried and they are looking and we expect that if there is any detentions here, we will have the full backing of the Irish Government to defend ourselves against what we consider is an illegal act by the scottish authorities. The Irish Government says the jurisdiction remains disputed and the threat of action by the Scottish Government is unwarranted. It says it will pursue every legal avenue to defend its fishermen. Laura maxwell, bbc news. A man who was found in a Critical Condition at a murder scene earlier this week in salford has died. Up to 50,000 people have taken part in a gay pride march in the polish capital, warsaw. For the first time the citys mayor took part. But the leader of the governing law and Justice Party has described the lgbt movement as a threat to polands identity. Warsaws pride march wasnt the only one thats taken place this weekend, as Ramzan Karmali reports. From boston to rome, zagreb to vilnius pride marches were in full swing. But perhaps the one most under the spotlight was in warsaw notjust because it was the citys biggest pride event ever, with an estimated 50,000 people taking part, but perhaps because it has come as a time when the ruling conservative law and Justice Party has increased its opposition to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights. Recently, the leader of the party, jaroslaw kaczynski, described the lgbt movement as a threat to polish identity. But, for the first time ever, the mayor of the city led the pride march. Translation this is about tolerance for everyone. For elderly people, for all who are marginalised today. I will always stand by every minority. Gay rights has become a political issue in the country and last months european parliamentary elections saw the ruling party outperform parties which were more supportive of lgbt rights and the issue is likely to feature again when the general election takes place later this year. Ramzan karmali, bbc news. The womens world cup is under way in france and in just 4 games weve already seen 10 goals. Obviously a dream to win the trophy but we not letting oui win the trophy but we not letting our minds go that far, we have five 01 games our minds go that far, we have five or games before that. Five or six. This is bbc news. Our main story this hour polls have opened in kazakhstan in a president ial election after the shock resignation of long standing leader Nursultan Nazarbayev. Lets get more on that now. A few minutes ago, the bbcs reporter in kazakhstan asked the ruling partys candidate what his message was for youth activists who had been protesting for greater democracy. My my message to all the youth of kaza khsta n my message to all the youth of kazakhstan is very much positive. No matter theyre protesting against the power, against the government, i believe that all the people who belong to the Younger Generation are pa rt belong to the Younger Generation are part of our people, are part of our population. And i believe that we must get together in order to meet oui must get together in order to meet our challenges that are coming from many parts of the world. The world itself has become extremely unstable. So there are so many pitfalls. But, anyway, we will be very much tolerant to the people who voice out different opinions. We will be building up a dialogue with all people, either those who support the government or those who are against the government. That was Kassym Jomart tokayev. The russian investigative journalist, ivan golunov, has been placed under house arrest for two months. Mr golunov was detained on thursday and later charged with attempting to sell a large quantity of drugs. His supporters say the charges are fabricated, and that hes been framed because he investigated corruption. Prosecutors had been seeking a jail sentence. Local elections later this month in albania have been called off by the countrys president as people continue to demonstrate against his government and increase their demands for an early poll. Police have fired tear gas as crowds continued their campaign in front of the government building in the capital tirana. If youve been dreaming of getting a ticket on a luxury cruise liner that sails to venice, you may want to think again. Thats because thousands of people in the city have been calling for large vessels to be banned from the famous giudecca canal. The protest comes days after a cruise ship crashed into a tourist boat, injuring four people. Rahuljoglekar has more. The msc opera lost control and crashed into the pier in venice last week. It injured people and caused damage to property. But in its wake, residents of the lagoon city have been left fuming. They came out onto the street wanting ships like these to be kicked out from their canals. Translation we demand that these liners be immediately banned from venice lagoon. What happened on sunday shows that they are dangerous, they are out of control in case of failure, and they cannot continue to play russian roulette with our homes, our lives and our cities, just to enrich these cruise companies. Translation it is absurd. I believe there is very little to say. If we want to save venice and the lagoon, we shouldnt allow those liners to enter. It is terrifying just to see them. The issue has been bubbling along for a while in venice. The government banned ships weighing more than 96,000 tons from the canal in 2013 but then legislation was overturned. Following sundays accident, the mayor of the city urged immediate action and asked for a different channel to be opened up. Translation even if everything went well today, it could have been a tragedy. I thank all of the rescue teams, the firefighters and security personnel are working here but once again it shows that big ships cannot go down the canal, they must go through san marco. We have said it already. Now the minister must decide quickly. For centuries, venice has been a hub of maritime trade and nicknamed the city of water. Now its residents want to keep large ships out of these waters, while the government claims it is finally close to a definitive solution. Rahuljoglekar, bbc news. Its probably fair to say that when youre heading to the beach, vacuum cleaning isnt uppermost in your mind. But a group of inventors hope more people in the future will enjoy cleaner trips to the seaside thanks to a new super size version of the machine. Theyve made one specifically to tackle plastic pollution which theyve set to work on a beach in hawaii nicknamed trash beach. Heres the story. The principle is simple. When you put the concept together there is a lot of work to make it all work together. So its like a mixture of plastic and sand on the beach. Then it goes in the machine where it is separated by buoyancy. So the plastic flows and the sand sinks. When we put it ina big and the sand sinks. When we put it in a big thing of water we can separate the two components of this. And we decided to go to this beach because of its reputation as one of the worst spots in the entire world for accumulation. This machine is great because we can collect micro plastic, but still the main thing we all have to think about is to reduce, or and recycle. Plastic is a big issue and it has to be tackled on different aspects and one of them is the beach, but also the management of it. Vacuum cleaning a beach in hawaii. Australian Ashleigh Barty has won the french open womens singles title in paris. The 23 year old cruised to her first grand slam victory over the czech teenager, marketa vondrousova, in straight sets. It comes after barty took a break from the sport in 2014 to play professional cricket. Shes now australias first singles winner at the tournament in more than a0 years. For the last fortnight, the stars have aligned for me. Ive been able to play really good tennis when ive needed it and this is just incredible. I never dreamt that id be sitting here with this trophy here at the french open. Obviously we have dreams and goals as children but this is incredible. And the mens final takes place on sunday between rafael nadal and dominic teem a repeat of last years final which nadal won. For many people golf can seem like a pretty sedate sort of sport. You need a good shot and a decent putting game, but it doesnt have to be all that energetic. Its a very different story though, for a group of players here in the uk, whove decided to pick up the pace a little. The bbcs tim allman reports. You know that saying, golf is a good walk spoilt . Well, theres not that much walking at the annual speed golf pairs championship. You have to go round the course in the fewest number of strokes but you have to do it as quickly as possible. Speed really is of the essence and it was all too much for some. I am knackered. I am done. That was the hardest and most exhilarating round of golf i have ever had. It was so fun. You play as a pair and it is a foursomes game so the team may alternate hitting the same ball. The game may seem familiar but appearances can be deceptive. It is very different. So knowing the course and knowing the clubs that you need is a big help because then you do not have to play short shots. The winning duo got around the 18 hole course in less than 50 minutes. Perhaps a trip to the 19th hole is in order and a suitably quick drink. You can reach me on twitter im regedahmadbbc. Time now to get the weather with chris fawkes. Hello again. Its not been the best of a start to the weekend, really, with a lot of cloud, outbreaks of rain and blustery winds for much of the day across good parts of the uk. Skies look rather grey and leaden like these. You can see just how extensive the rain is as well. In the north west of wales, 36 millimetres of rain over the 24 hour period. Thats getting on for 1. 5 inches of rain. But the brisk winds calmed down and generally it was a better end to the day. For example in hertfordshire with clearing skies. If you are heading outside over the next few hours, for many of us, lengthy clear spells with showers restricted to the north and west of the uk as the area of low pressure continues to drift away from our shores and move closer and closer to norway. Given the clear skies, its not particularly cold. Temperatures for most of us between seven and nine degrees celsius. And it means its going to be a fine start to the day, with the sun up. Plenty of that sunshine through the morning and a largely dry morning to come. That said, quite cloudy for scotland in the north and a few showers here. Going into the afternoon, shower clouds will begin develop around midday. In the afternoon, those showers become heavy, thundery and slow moving. Theyll form in lines where the winds clash together in these convergence zones and they will bring heavy showers to the south west england, the south midlands. Maybe a few downpours for mid wales, Northern Ireland and across the north of scotland. These areas, with the convergent winds, are the areas where you will most likely see showers. Away from those zones, fewer showers, more dry weather and more in the way ofjune sunshine. All in all, it will feel a warmer day. Temperatures, 16 20. Looking at the weather picture into the early part of the new week, a real clash of hot air from africa into central europe, colliding with cooler air coming down from polar regions. That clash of air masses with big temperature contrasts brings quite an active weather front and the met office have already issued a yellow weather warning for this. Through monday and tuesday, some areas could be getting on for a months worth of rain. The rain is not going to bejust intense but persistent. The rain notjust across eastern areas either but is extensive across england and wales. Further north, scotland and Northern Ireland, a few passing showers, weather largely dry, though, with spells of sunshine. You can see how the rain will continue to pump in both through monday and tuesday with the threat of localised flooding. That is where we see the heaviest and most prolonged bursts of rain. From there, the rain travels north and rain going into scotland and Northern Ireland later in the week as the weather tries to improve in the south.
