Occasion. And along with the president , his family. Including his daughter ivanka and her husband jared kushner, both advisers to the president. Also this lunchtime. Indian helicopter teams searching for a group of missing climbers spot five bodies. A bbc investigation discovers that bp has agreed to pay billions of dollars to a businessman involved in a suspicious energy deal in africa. And in the cricket world cup, england take on pakistan at trent bridge. Coming up in the sport later in the hour on bbc news, afterfour years as england netball head coach, Tracey Neville will stand down after next months world cup. Good afternoon and welcome to the bbc news at one. Well, hes here. But even before he stepped off air force one he stepped into a row launching a twitter tirade against london mayor sadiq khan, perhaps not the most diplomatic way to start a formal visit to the uk. Right now he is at Buckingham Palace about to have a private lunch with a queen. Todayis have a private lunch with a queen. Today is very much about the ceremonial side, but today is very much about the ceremonialside, but tomorrow, it will be all about the politics. That could be just as unpredictable as the day has proven to be so far. This report from our correspondent richard galpin. Finally, three years after first being invited to make a state visit, President Trump and the first lady arrive at stansted airport. Everything apparently going to plan as they were greeted on the tarmac. But it emerged the president had in fa ct but it emerged the president had in fact launched a ferocious verbal attack on the mayor of london just before landing. In a tweet he claimed sadiq khan had been a terrible mayor, who had been nasty to him, describing him as a stone cold loser. If you look at his tweet, he was not exactly saying he was going to be inviting sadiq khan for Royal Treatment in the white house anytime soon. As mr trump flew above the city over which sadiq khan presides, he knew he had exacted revenge for the mayors earlier accusation that the president s far right politics were a threat to liberal democracies. The president is staying with us ambassador, who has also courted controversy, suggesting the nhs should be part of any trade deal with the United States. Other controversies include the president s support for Boris Johnson to be the next prime minister, and mr trumps threat to limit intelligence cooperation with the uk if it chooses the Chinese Telecoms Company huawei to build pa rt Telecoms Company huawei to build part of the 5g network. The president wanting to build an International Coalition against the company. Where we have seen one element of an effort of the us looking to gain allies is not in confronting china on trade at large, but solely on containing huawei and trying to make sure the telecoms industry in the us view is safe and secure from any potential threat that might arise now or in 20 years. But in many ways, the biggest prize for but in many ways, the biggest prize foertrump on the but in many ways, the biggest prize for mr trump on the visit is the reception from the royal family at Buckingham Palace. This official ceremony included greetings from Prince Charles and the duchess of cornwall as well as the queen. This is the start of the day of royal engagements ending with a banquet in the palace. These images being carried live on the us networks will play well for him ahead of next yea rs play well for him ahead of next years president ial election. After his gaffe during his visit here last year, when he walked in front of the queen, this time the president was careful not to repeat his mistake. The pageant and formality at the palace will be in strong contrast with protests expected tomorrow, involving thousands on the streets of the capital and across the country. Trump is in the spotlight and he is seen as our biggest ally and he is seen as our biggest ally and his policies are sexist, tearing apart migrant families at the us border, they are racist politics and they will impact in the uk when we negotiate this trade deal and we need to hold him to account and because of that direct relationship is why we are seeing protests. Because of that direct relationship is why we are seeing protestsm because of that direct relationship is why we are seeing protests. It is common sense. This was always going to bea common sense. This was always going to be a fraught visit, but the government will still hope it will bolster relations with the trump administration. Our royal correspondent, daniela relph, is with me, alongsidejon sopel, our north america editor. Todayit today it is all about the royals. Politics invariably seeps into whatever President Trump says or does but today is about the royal family and ceremonial part of the state visit. At the moment we know there is a private lunch inside Buckingham Palace hosted by the queen with other members of the royalfamily queen with other members of the royal family attending for the president and first lady and we will see them in a couple of hours when there will be a tour of the picture gallery in the palace where the president will be shown items from the Royal Collection with an american link. The president with the duke of york, a member of the royalfamily he the duke of york, a member of the royal family he knows, the duke of york, a member of the royalfamily he knows, will go to Westminster Abbey to lay a wreath. And then tea at Clarence House with the prince of wales. Will the thorny issue of Climate Change come up . An issue of Climate Change come up . An issue they have opposing views on possibly. And then the set piece this evening, the state banquet, where we will hear from the president and queen and they will make speeches and then toast each other. He has his phone with him. Yes, the phone goes with him everywhere, just like the nuclear codes. He has to bring his blackberry so he can tweet at a moments notice. You always think it will go according to protocol and never quite does. Air force one was just coming into land. About 10,000 feet, descending into stansted and suddenly, a ferocious assault on sadiq khan, the mayor of london, that he is a stone cold loser. And also insulting about how small he is in stature. No one would have anticipated that but equally, on the british side, no one would be overly surprised by that. Yesterday, all about today is about the ceremonial but politics always intervene with donald trump and if something is on his mind he will express it and the british hosts know that. Different from his last visit and unlike other state visits, nojoint address to visit and unlike other state visits, no joint address to parliament. Will that annoy him . I think it will annoy him a bit and there will be people in america, even if they do not like donald trump, they may think it is slightly insulting the office of president and lets distinguish between the presidency and President Trump and the fact mainstream political leaders are boycotting the state banquet might not play well. Saying hang on, you welcome the president of china, no freedom of speech, the human rights record, but you will not welcome the president of the us and maybe not just republicans but democrats will be saying you are on the wrong side of the line. This queen has met all american president s is set for one. We never really know what members of the royal family make of all this. I have put you in a difficult position, what will she make of this . We will not know. 67 years as queen we do not know what she thinks about anybody. There is the contrast of the president visiting, where we know everything about what he is thinking and who he likes and meeting the queen who during her reign has literally not said a word about anybody in particular. We have no idea what she is thinking. However unpredictable the president is, what he says, she will not really mind. She has been there, done it, seen it all and is an expert in diplomacy and she will cope well. And since he has landed he has put the tv on. He knows back home these pictures are worth gold. It is sam on the east coast of america and seven oclock, central, 5am on the west coast. It is breakfast time and people will be watching this and all the networks are carrying these pictures and have sent news anchors here to be part of the moment and the royal family cuts through in the United States in a way uk politics does not and donald trump knows this is good for business. Thank you. The president of the United States does not travel light. As well as air force one, theres a huge number of people and vehicles that travel with him. When the president is on the move, youll know about it. This is his motorcade, complete with secret service back up and armoured suv communications vehicle, and Counter Assault and hazardous attack teams. As for the man himself, he travels in an 18 foot, nine tonne armoured cadillac, known as the beast reportedly equipped with tear gas grenade launchers, night vision cameras and a built in satellite phone. The president has also brought a fleet of helicopters with him to the united kingdom, as well as an army of staff. On his last uk visit, its thought the president had a i,000 strong entourage including more than 150 Us Secret Service agents. The met police in london are very used to dealing with this kind of visit. Just a few years ago we had the chinese president , and one after the other have been to the uk, where my plans are in place. Each one has to be separately risk assessed, and of course, you know, the us president does bring a massive entourage with him. With the policing bill for this visit expected to be more than £18 million, the metropolitan police will have to deal with anti trump protests as demonstrators angered by the us president s state visit. Its the protesters that the police are going to be most concerned about, because theyve been very difficult to contain, as weve seen recently. But, of course, there is always also the threat of security to the man and his family himself, so the police have got to do a great deal of work around building island sites around the individual so that they can remain safe. Adina campbell is amongst the crowds gathering outside Buckingham Palace. Even though all of the pomp and ceremony is even though all of the pomp and ceremony is over even though all of the pomp and ceremony is over there is a real buzz outside the palace and it is fairto buzz outside the palace and it is fair to say there is a mixed atmosphere this afternoon. There are people who are well wishers, supporters of donald trump, and others staunchly against his values and believing he is not welcome here. I spoke to two women who have different values in terms of different values in terms of different opinions when it comes to President Trump. They are alana from yorkshire and ida from derbyshire. Tell us why you came here . I was visiting london and decided to come to see what is going on. What do you think about donald trump . |j to see what is going on. What do you think about donald trump . I do not support him. I do not think he has any respect for life, whether it be denying people and taking away health care, allowing an increased amount ofair health care, allowing an increased amount of air pollution even though 70,000 people a year die from pollution, or something really big such as denying Asylum Seekers refuge, especially when we need immigrants. You are a supporter and you believe he has a lot of good things to say . He wants to make his country great and like immigration, he wants it controlled, which we should do in this country. They come in in droves. Our children cannot get houses, orjobs. Because of all this. I am get houses, orjobs. Because of all this. Iam not get houses, orjobs. Because of all this. I am not anti get houses, orjobs. Because of all this. Iam notanti immigration, but i think there are too many coming in and that is one of the policies i agree with him on. You believe the ceremony should be held . We have had some of the worst dictators in the world in this country, with all this pmp world in this country, with all this pomp and ceremony. We are honouring the country that helped us in the war. That is what i think. Alana, you do not feel the same . A bit mixed, ido you do not feel the same . A bit mixed, i do not think we should be honouring this man who works against out honouring this man who works against our interests but at the same time we are honouring the presidency, which is good, and we are honouring the men who served in d day and that is important to enter my acknowledge their work. We are expecting some protests today. If last year is anything to go by, very controversial, President Trumps working visit, a huge Police Operation and there could be similar, if not a bigger Police Presence across london over the next few days. On wednesday, the president will head to portsmouth to join in the commemorations marking the 75th anniversary of the d day landings the beginning of the allied invasion of nazi occupied europe. 250 veterans are marking the occasion with a voyage to france, on board a specially chartered cruise ship, the boudicca. Our correspondent robert hall is travelling with them. They left port on a june evening in 191m without fanfares or cheers. Young men whod written their last letters home sailing into the dark wondering whether theyd return. Last night 300 veterans began their pilgrimage in honour of the thousands who still lie in normandy. To be with my dad and to be in the presence of all these veterans, its amazing. A privilege and an honour. Theyre the only two words i can come up with. Transporting veterans aged between 90 and 101 safely to commemorations on both sides of the channel will be a challenge. And its about the opportunity to mark appropriately, with the people who were involved in the day, and for everybody to feel that theyve been on the trip of a lifetime. They are lifted by each other, so their ills and aches are kind of washed away by the fact they were in a group. It is without doubt the most humbling thing ive ever been involved in. Archive footage this is it theyre on the beach. 7,000 vessels landed over 130,000 british, canadian, and us troops on five d day beaches. The sights and sounds of that Campaign Still burn bright in the memories of those who survived. We were under intense machine gun fire, which we hadnt expected. You couldnt go anywhere. We were just sitting ducks. It went straight through that one. I knew id been hit, of course, and i realised that the cigarette case had obviously saved my life. We were stacking dead bodies up to get behind and look after another patient. Well, the last patient i looked after was german, a 16 year old boy. Hed just lost both legs, and he died in my arms. Whatever role they played, these men are part of a normandy brotherhood. Some have never told their stories, until now. There will be so many more experiences to share on thisjourney. Robert hall, bbc news, in the english channel. Write now a private lunch, with the queen and the president of the United States, followed by a short ceremony, a swapping of gifts, details of which will be released later. This afternoon the president and his wife will be going to Westminster Abbey to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown warrior, but, ben, time to what your twitter account and, frankly, hold your breath. Studio all right, simon. Thanks very much indeed. The time is approaching 18 minutes past one. Our top story this lunchtime President Trump is having lunch with the queen at Buckingham Palace, on the first day of his state visit to britain. Tonight, shell host a banquet in his honour. But the president has already caused controversy, starting his trip with an attack on londons mayor, sadiq khan, who he called a stone cold loser. Coming up in the spirit in the next 15 minutes on bbc news. Following their Champions League victory, jurgen klopp could be in line for another contract extension. Liverpool want to tie him down to the club beyond 2022. Rescuers searching for eight missing climbers on one of indias highest mountains have spotted five bodies lying in the snow. Four britons were among those on nanda devi in the himalayas, but the party failed to return to base camp on friday. Indian airforce pilots have been trying to help find them, but bad weather is continuing to hamper the operation. Our india correspondent, Yogita Limaye, is in the foothills of the himalayas. Yogita. Even today the air force helicopter couldnt take off at daybreak because of heavy rainfall in the town where the helicopters ta ke in the town where the helicopters take off from. Yesterday, officials had said that they had found evidence of multiple avalanches on the mountain. They had said that the hopes of finding any of the climbers we re hopes of finding any of the climbers were looking bleak, and today those fears seem to have been confirmed. The Indian Air Force set off again in search of the missing. Today, they came back with grim news. They spotted bodies on the mountain. Theyve been searching for eight of these climbers, who set out on an expedition on nanda devi more than three weeks ago and were due to return to base camp on friday. All 12 climbers had taken permits from the Indian Government for the nanda devi mountain. They went through the eastern base camp and then appear to have split into two groups. The eight who are missing were trying to ascend an unclimbed summit of over6,400 metres along this ridge. The group was being led by martin moran, an experienced british mountaineer. Back in scotland, where he came from, a fellow climber told the bbc how popular he was. Martin moran is very well known in the climbing community. Not just in scotland, but all over the world, because he has put first ascents up all over the world. He is a magnificent mountaineer. He has done a crazy amount of stuff in the alps. But in scotland he has put up so many big, bold routes, and even as he was ageing he still didnt stop. On sunday, the Indian Air Force had rescued these british climbers part of the same group but on a different mission in the mountain. Officials say these climbers showed them where to look. Nanda devi is considered one of the toughest mountains in the world to climb. Not many have dared to take on its peaks. But for experienced mountaineers, it presents a challenge that is hard to resist. The big challenge for authorities here now is how to retrieve those bodies. This is a High Altitude area, not a place where helicopters can land. And so officials have said they are bringing in the indian army, and the Indian Air Force is also involved. Together, they will determine how to go there and retrieve the bodies. Of course they seem retrieve the bodies. Of course they seem to have seen five bodies but in total eight climbers are missing, ben, and so they will also continue to search for those who havent been located yet. Studio yogita, thank you very much indeed, Yogita Limaye reporting from the foothills of the himalayas. Bp has agreed to pay around 10 billion to a businessman involved in a suspicious energy deal. The energy giant bought frank timis stake in a gas field off the coast of senegal for 250 million in 2017. But documents obtained by bbc panorama and africa eye reveal that bp will also pay his company between 9 billion and 12 billion in royalties. Both bp and mr timis deny any wrongdoing. Mayenijones reports. This is romanian businessman frank timis. In 2012, one of his companies was awarded the exploration rights for two large oil and gas concessions off the coast of senegal, even though it had no track record in the industry. The final go ahead came from the senegalese president , macky sall. But the deal looked suspicious because frank timis had given a top job to the president s brother, aliou sall. Why do you think that frank timis wanted to employ aliou sall . Translation very simply because he was the brother of the president , macky sall. Its extremely serious, because there is an obvious conflict ofi nterest. Conflict of interest. Weve obtained aliou salls contract. It shows he was paid 25,000 a month for five years. Thats 1. 5 million. The president s brother was also promised shares worth 3 million. But the contract makes it clear there is a condition. Aliou sall will only get the job if his brother, the president , allows frank timis to keep the valuable concessions. In 2016 gas was discovered in the concessions. Bp agreed to buy frank timis out, even though it knew about the suspicious payments to the president s brother. Weve got a copy of the royalties agreement. Its described as the most generous in the industry. Over the next a0 years, bp will pay Timis Corporation between 9 12 billion. These figures have never been made public before. 9 billion. Are you sure . There is no reason that such money to be given to frank timis. This is unacceptable, properly unacceptable. Bp says it conducted extensive Due Diligence and it rejects any implication that it acted improperly. The chief executive, bob dudley, has refused to answer our questions. Mr dudley, i work for bbc panorama, and we want to know why bp is paying frank timis 10 billion. I really. You knew that he was paying the president of senegals brother, so why go ahead with the deal, sir . Sir, is frank timis someone that bp should be doing business with . Mr dudley, why wont you answer our questions . Frank timis and aliou sall strenuously deny any corruption. Their lawyers said the payments to mr sall were in line with similarjobs and he never received the shares. They say he was employed for his expertise and not because he happened to be the president of senegals brother. Mayenijones, bbc news, senegal. And you can see the full report on panorama tonight. Thats at 8. 30 on bbc one. American aviation regulators have identified new problems with boeings troubled 737 max aircraft. Theyve ordered the airline to replace parts that may be faulty in more than 300 max planes, and an older 737 model. Its the latest setback for the aircraft, which was grounded in march following fatal crashes in indonesia and ethiopia. At the cricket world cup, england are taking on pakistan at trent bridge, and are hoping to make it two wins out of two in the competition. England won the toss and decided to bowl first. Our correspondent, andy swiss, has been watching. Andy . Yes, ben. Welcome to trent bridge, where england fans would have arrived this morning in pretty bullish mood. Remember, they are the favourites for the world cup and they beat south africa in their opening match last week, but their opponents pakistan are giving them plenty to think about. Sunshine over trent bridge, and kiss my england supporters, no shortage of confidence. Could they make it two wins out of two . Well, not of pakistans face painted fan club could help it. But they knew they would need something special. After all, pakistan had been thrashed in their opening game, but youd scarcely have guessed it from this. As their batsmen blazed out of the blocks. Imam ul haq and fakhar zaman blending power with poise as they raced past 50. Pakistan off to a flyer, but just when raced past 50. Pakistan off to a flyer, butjust when they needed a break through, step forward moeen ali. Fakhar zaman eight stumped by the very finest of margins, but it was enough, and another wicket soon followed as once again england proved their catching prowess. This time with chris woakes as with a cracker as fakhar zaman succumbed to this brilliant dive. But when it looked like england could achieve anything, look at this. From the spectacular to the slapstick. Jason roy the most embarrassed man in nottingham. Mohammad hafeez slipping through his fingers. For england fa ns through his fingers. For england fans almost too painful to watch. Pakistan didnt make things any easier. Add naked as they continue their positive approach. Babar azam continue their positive approach. Ba bar azam to continue their positive approach. Babarazam toa continue their positive approach. Babar azam to a quickfire century. Englands bowlers with plenty to think about as pakistan looked to set a challenging target. Well, the latest, i can tell you, pakistan are still going very nicely. They are 2113 3 with about ten overs left. England have one of the best batting line ups and cricket but they could be in for a real challenge here, ben. Studio andy, thank you very much indeed. Back now to simon at Buckingham Palace. Thank you very much, ben. From todays pomp and ceremony, the visit moves on to business and politics. Tomorrow morning, President Trump and theresa may will co host a breakfast meeting at stjames palace with Senior Business leaders from both the us and the uk. The president and the first lady will then travel to downing street where they will have lunch with the prime minister, and mr trump and mrs may will hold talks. In the evening, president and mrs trump will host a return dinner at winfield house. The prince of wales and the duchess of cornwall will attend on behalf of the queen. Our assistant political editor, norman smith, is in westminster. We knew even before he got off the plane this would be a lively visit, and so it is proving . It is, or will you have to say that politics tomorrow maybe a little bit underpowered, and maybe even dull. Why . We know that theresa may is standing down as party leader and i in three days time, where they might better the president will potential much time and effort to address the detailed relationship issues between these two countries issues between these two countries isa issues between these two countries is a question, but we know that the president doesnt do dul, where the night we know that they are viewing the prospect of a press conference at downing street with the president s with some trepidation. The questions of how theresa handle brexit, could she have done better, would borisjohnson have done better . And we know the president has arrived in britain in pretty rumbustious plain speaking mode and the chances are he will have some fairly no nonsense answers when it comes to theresa may and brexit, and on top of that, we dont know whether he is actually going to meet with borisjohnson. Whether he is actually going to meet with Boris Johnson. So whether he is actually going to meet with borisjohnson. So dul . Probably not. I suspect we will have to buckle up for a fairly bumpy day tomorrow. Dull . Probably not. Norman smith from westminster, thank you for that. Lets get the weather now with stav danaos. Thank you, simon. A lot of cloud around and outbreaks of rain for much of the country but southern britain had a glorious hot and sunny weekend, top temperature of 29 in norfolk on sunday making it the warmest day in the uk so far this year. Today, it will be much cooler across the south east, 20 or 21 the high, good eight or 9 degrees
