day of sport for you, we will have all the news of the rugby champions cup, but we are starting with cricket. england's one day batsmen were at their swash—buckling best — as they beat pakistan today as part of their preparation to host the world cup this month. joss butler hit a brilliant century off just 50 balls in southampton and despite pakistan also giving it a good go, they fell 12 short of england's 373 run total. ben croucher reports. sit back and enjoy the soundtrack of the summer, or so england hope. these matches against pakistan or designed to get the team injune ahead of the world cup looks to be working. jason royce quite 87. jos buttler came in, though, and second ball, we have heard that before. it was a day to stand and admire as the fielders turned into spectators and the spectators into fielders. iio forjos buttler, music to the heirs of the majority in southampton. they we re of the majority in southampton. they were silenced by pakistan's encore, seeming to tramp anything england could chuck their way. batting with intention for 138. as england launched over the line, their opponents slipped up. this high—scoring symphony ended with a valiant pakistan, a little muted. so this is how that scorecard looks. the second highest run scoring game in england for both sides. jason roy with 87 — jonny bairstow and eoin morgan reaching half centuries. pakistan's reply of 361 for 7 a valiant effort in reply. fakhar zaman leading the way with 138. babar azam and asif ali with half centuries. that was a genuinely close game, but england got there in the end. saracens have beaten leinster to win rugby union's champions cup for the third time in 4 years. they were 10—0 down at one point, but fought back to win — in a relentless performance at st james park in newcastle. in rugby, the final stretch can be the hardest. yet, something keeps dragging saracens and leinster back to this stage. in newcastle, a meeting of the game's biggest beats. the toughest of all and tough to call. a match of all matches. they have won this trophy two years in a row, then leinster took it off them. these were two dominant clubs in european rugby. when two such forces collide, much sound and fury follows, but initially more bruises than points. it took until a sin—bin until leinster took a chance to get through. saracens free themselves from the claustrophobia, sean maitland going over and saracens went level by the break. saracens red army rumbled horde again, from the video official, no try but a penalty. owen farrell did the necessary. still so tight when lei nster necessary. still so tight when leinster were struck by a belt from billy. vinnie poehler came over and england will need this strength at the world cup. in this wild week of sport, this was too much for leinster, there reign as champions ended by this kick. victory to saracens, brutally beery and saracens. —— brutally brilliant saracens. what a cracking week it's been for football — drama in the champions league midweek. the premier league finale to come tomorrow. and today — the battle to join the top flight via the championship playoffs. norwich and sheffield united are already up. but who willjoin them? the first legs of the semi—finals were today — leeds travelled to derby — hoping to arrest a wretched run of form more on that in a moment. but earlier aston villa got the edge on their midlands rivals west bromwich albion. michael redford reports. with a place in the premier league on offer, the championship play—offs are never short of drama. throw in the added element of a west midlands derby and this match had an extra spark. an early goal would have settled any pre—match nerves, a combination of fingertips and crossbar denied jay rodriguez and west brom that luxury. with so much at stake, pressure can affect even the most experienced players. veteran glenn whelan with a rare mistake, and west brom's player of the year dwight gayle making him pay. chances were few and far between for both sides. one moment can change a match and substitute conor hourihane provided it. four minutes later, aston villa were ahead, jack grealish brought down, penalty. a massive moment in the tie, tammy abraham calmness personified. it would get worse for west brom before full—time, gayle shown a second yellow card and sent off for this challenge. he will miss the next leg on tuesday. aston villa are a step closer to a second successive play—off final. leeds beat derby 1—0 in the first leg of the championship play—off semi—finals. it was dutchman kemar roofe who gave the whites the lead — he also had a chance just a few minutes later, saved by the rams‘ keeper kelle roos. moments later, derby were given a penalty after a tangle between jack harrison and jayden bogle. but the decision was then reversed, with leeds rewarded a free—kick instead. sunderland are taking on portsmouth in the first semi final of the league one play offs. it's a repeat of been promoted to the football league — for the first time in their history. they beat afc fylde 3—0 at wembley in the final of the national league play—offs. emmanuel die—seruv—we david beckham is one of the owners, ryan giggs as well. it is part of a plan for them, they want to get them to the championship and they have got them into the league, fantastic result for them. unlucky for fylde themselves who have had an interesting story. onto the scottish premiership now and kilmarnock are back into 3rd. that is the place that will get them into the europa league next season. they beat hibs1—0. eamonn brophy with a thirty second minute minute penalty. kenny miller scored the only goal for already relegated dundee — who ended a run of 10 straight defeats with victory at livingston. and stjohnstone secured seventh place, with a comfortable victory over nearest rivals motherwell. meanwile in the race for promotion to the premiership — inverness are through to the semi—finals of the play—offs after a 11—2 aggregate win over ayr. it finished 1—1 today. they'll play dundee united in the first leg of the semifinal on tuesday. wsl champions arsenal finished their season on a high inflicting manchester city's only league defeat this campaign. they beat them 1—0 on the final day, to end a superb season with 18 victories in 20 games. miriam walker—khan has more. the gunners have waited seven years to lift the wsl trophy. that is a long time for the most decorated club in english women's football. but this year has been a breeze. they only lost two games all season and when they were already guaranteed the title with a game to go, the celebrations were never in doubt. a stunning emma mitchell left—footed shot in the 88th minute somehow found the top corner. but it meant more than just 1—0. a consolation prize for manchester city was that they had not lost a game all year. that was until today. as fate would have it, those bragging rights taken away by the champions. third time in a row mercedes‘ valtteri bottas will start from pole. formula one's championship leader beat his team mate lewis hamilton to the front of the grid in qualifying for the spanish grand prix. jennie gow has more details from barcelona. we always knew it was highly likely that mercedes would lead the way, they have been so dominant so far this season, especially in spain. they seem to have turned it on. could ferrari challenge? formula 1 drivers do thousands of laps during pre—season testing at barcelona, but despite the familiarity, it can still catch you out. those who struggled ranged from the experienced like nico hulkenberg to the rookie briton george russell. at the sharp end, valtteri bottas was looking more comfortable than ever. his mercedes team could not catch ferrari during pre—season testing but look invincible now. at the end of the second session, the finnish driver broke the track record and at the start of the final one, he did it again. in the other mercedes, world champion lewis hamilton was looking ragged. the british driver usually reigns in spain but was dethroned by more than half a second. the one—point gap between them in the championship looks set to grow. i really enjoyed that, i enjoyed the adrenaline rush you get from those laps, so i am very pleased. practice was difficult with the spin, so we have moved on. i did not get the laps together so the last couple of laps were, in 03 in particular, they were not strong. i had to go out early because i came in too early and had a low battery pack, so i had to go out ahead of everyone, but it was not a good enoughjob. with the ferrari of sebastian vettel a distant third, the season is shaping up to be a two horse race between the mercedes team—mates. j°y joy for bottas, not so good for hamilton, he would have expected on a track he has done so well on in the past to get pole position. it should lead to interesting dynamics. the two team—mates of mercedes in 2016, they will go head—to—head and ta ke 2016, they will go head—to—head and take each other out. let's hope that doesn't happen to —— happen again! the ferrari driver is failing to set a key time, qualifying in fifth. he had to use another set of tyres and then get only getting one bite of then get only getting one bite of the cherry in the final qualifying. it hurt him, but maybe he can turn things around in the race. fingers crossed it will be fantastic here in barcelona. the worry is it will be another domination for mercedes. meanwhile, jean—eric vergne became the first repeat race winner of this year's formula e season after converting pole into victory on the streets of monaco. the ds techeetah driver maintained the advantage at the start from mahindra's pascal wehrlein. he dropped behind oliver rowland and felipe massa as a result. vergne retakes the lead in the points standings as a result of his win, five points ahead of andre lotterer, while robin frijns has dropped from first to third. still to come on sportsday: we'll be in slovakia to find out how great britain fared in their first game at the ice hockey world championship. in rugby league, championship side bradford shocked super league leeds rhinos to reach the quarterfinals of the challenge cup. bradford led 22 points to 1a at half—time, mikey wood with this tryjust before the break. the rhinos almost forced extra—time when tom briscoe crossed late on, but liam sutcliffe's conversion hit the post and the bulls held on to record a 211—22 victory. so a real shock there at bradford, what a win for the bulls. also through to the quarter finals are catalans dragons — the challenge cup holders — after they thrashed doncaster. and hull kingston rovers, who won at salford red devils. the iaaf world relays are being held in tokyo this weekend. it's the fourth edition of the event, which takes place every world championship year. and it was a great start for team gb. the women's four by 400 team qualified for the final, after they finished just behind poland in their heat. the men's 4 x 400 team also made it to the final, finishing third in qualifying. but team gb didn't qualify for the mixed 4 x 400 final, after their heat was dominated by canada, germany and kenya. the mixed 4 x 400 is a new event, and it will be included in the 2020 olympics in tokyo. gb‘s men have qualified for the final of the 4 x 100 metres. they crossed the line in the fastest time in the world this year, beating australia and jamaica. the reigning world champions last won a medal at the world relays back in 2014, when they won bronze. britain's women, though, failed to qualify after a change—over blunder. they'll now have to rely on world rankings if they're to qualify for the world championships in doha. i love the idea of their mixed relay at the olympics! that will be fantastic. let's take a look at some of the other sports stories today. england's matt wallace has a share of the lead at the british masters at southport going into the final round. wallace — who is chasing a fifth european tour title — his on 14—under par overall, tied with sweden's marcus kinult going into the final round. britain's simon yates just missed out on winning the opening stage of cycling's first grand tour of the year, the giro d'italia. yates, who is the reigning vuelta a espana champion, finished the five mile time trial in bologna in second place, just nineteen seconds behind slovenia's primroz roglitz. wasps are through to the netball superleague final after a 20—point victory over loughborough lightening. they won 74—54 to progress to keep their hopes of winning a third successive title alive. great britain were beaten 3—1 by olympic silver medalists germany in their opening game at the ice hockey world championship in slovakia. but two late goals saw the germans to a hard fought victory. we can go live to our ice hockey reporter seth bennett who's in slovakia. seth a brave effort from gb but all to no avail. absolutely, 25 years in the making, they last played at this level in 1994. they always knew it would be hard, germany or the olympic silver medallists, ranked eighth in the world, gb ranked down in 22nd. the big question would be, with a be able to match germany in the early stages? they did it well, creating some good chances early on in the game. the best probably falling to evan, a lovely pass coming outside. there was a good opportunity for brad o'connor as well, a couple of great saves from the german goalkeeper that made the difference. had they scored those chances, they may have had a different story. gb are now finding themselves struggling in front of the net, germany were able to get themselves moving. hammond equalised for great britain, but germany were able to get themselves off at a counter in the final period. with the extra ability they have got, the extra quality they have, they were able to get the tu— one goal, a touch of fortune about that goal, but gb were able to fight hard at the end. —— 2-1 able to fight hard at the end. —— 2—1 goal. gb were not able to fight their way back at the end of the game. having played such a good game, they don't get any time to rest, they now have to go straight back out, a quick night sleep and they face the mighty canadians next. it will be a tough ask against probably the most storied ice hockey tea m probably the most storied ice hockey team in the world, team canada up next for gb. thank you forjoining us. olympic sailing champion giles scott admits the decision to remove his finn class from the paris 2024 onwards will effectively end his olympic career. the briton was hoping to follow the likes of sir ben ainslie and claim multiple titles, but the event is being axed from the olympic line—up as part of a major shake—up of the sport. scott races at the european championships in athens next week and nick hope has been to meet him. giles scott, the gold medal winner in rio dejaneiro, 2016. he hoped this was the beginning of his olympic domination, but after tokyo 2020, the finn class is being axed from the games, effectively ending giles scott's olympic career. it isa ending giles scott's olympic career. it is a shame for the sport, the finn class is something i hold quite close. in terms of other boats i have been able to sail, it is pretty limited. the most difficult thing is not for someone like myself, it is for the younger guys coming through. the olympic dream has been taken away from them. i can understand what is trying to be done, potentially the way in which it has unfolded has been a bit of a pill to swallow for some. world sailing say they are trying to modernise and ensure the sport remains in the olympics, by increasing gender equality and boosting youth appeal with new classes and mixed gender events. there is no chance of a reprieve for the finn. scott is already thinking about his long—term future by taking up a role as a tactician. the ultimate target for us tactician. the ultimate target for us is to bring the american cup back to britain. it has never been won by the nation. if we can do that and bring the america cup back, where it all bring the america cup back, where it a ll started bring the america cup back, where it all started way back when, it would be an amazing thing to be a part of. sailing has a big technical aspect to it as well, which the america's cup provides a lot of lessons that you can take to the olympics. giles scott isn't only one of the best sailors in the welcome he is also one of the busiest. he is confident of handling the dual challenge of america's cup success and olympic glory. with tokyo 2020 adding incentive. if he wins there, he could be the last ever alembic champion in the finn. could be the last ever alembic champion in the firm. it will be the last olympic gold medal in the finn that you could ever win. it adds that you could ever win. it adds that little bit. in an amazing spot to be up for selection, hopefully at the end of this year. getting the chance to have a shot at another olympic gold would be amazing. victory at the europeans in athens next week should allow scott to begin plotting the course to tokyo 2020 glory. when it comes to british sporting success stories over the last decade, taekwondo is right up there. britons have won olympic and world championship gold medals in this korean martial art and this week, the world championships are coming to manchester. so we sent mike bushell — who else — to take a few kicks and punches from the british stars in training. britain's tae kwon do athletes are standing taller than ever before, especially as they now have one of the tallest martial artists, six foot nine, he is only 21, but his mere presence can take you there. foot nine, he is only 21, but his mere presence can take you therem is easierfor me mere presence can take you therem is easier for me to kick higher, mere presence can take you therem is easierfor me to kick higher, but it can be a disadvantage but i am working on it and at the moment, it is an advantage. the british team hoping to take advantage of home is a defending world champion. he knocked me over with a new technique, what was that about? my new technique, the hair flick! watch yourself. the best thing kids love about it is you can shout and scream and kick each other. you can pretend you are a superhero and have superpowers in your legs and hands. i think that is the joy of being a kid, to express yourself and be free. when you get older, you still have the inner child in you. this appeal, along with olympic and world success appeal, along with olympic and world su ccess m ea ns appeal, along with olympic and world success means the number of people attending taekwondo classes has risen to 17,000. these sport hopes that by hosting the brown championships in manchester will give another spring in its step. it's like i'm doing the cancan! london 2012, that was my baptism of fire, igot london 2012, that was my baptism of fire, i got a bronze medal, and i'm excited to be back in the uk to compete in the electric home crowd. we are getting better and better, and such a small team, we are smashing it out of the park. and such a small team, we are smashing it out of the parkm and such a small team, we are smashing it out of the park. it all sta rts smashing it out of the park. it all starts with a game of tag, proving that what started in the 19405 is more speed than technique. taekwondo is like another sport, goodness, it's amazing. agility helps you score the points. my best shot is tight, body to body, hit the person in the back of the head with the leg, comes out of nowhere. big shout, that's the key part. the kick is good, shout needs to be better. very good! scared myself. if you spin before kicking, it's an extra point. it's only close up when you feel the full force. down and out. it's look like —— it looked like she went down too easily until you saw the point of view shot. and you can watch the taekwondo world championships live from manchester on the red button, bbc iplayer and on the bbc sport website and app, it starts at 7pm on wednesday, you can find full coverage details on the bbc sport website. that's all from sportsday. we'll have more later here on bbc news. see you soon, good night. good evening, it was a day for chasing rainbows today, there is better weather on the way and it was a decent today, actually, here in cornwall on the beach. you can see how the cloud has bubbled up overla nd how the cloud has bubbled up overland and we were not quite so lucky at hastings in east sussex, because the cloud overland gave some showers and a southerly breeze blew them down onto the south coast. you can see some showers early on, we had some thunderstorms in sussex as well as yorkshire. there showers are beginning to fade away now. not too many left, it will be a dry entity day, we will see the back of the showers after sunset. turning dry, clear skies overnight, light wind. not that one today, so temperatures don't have too far to fall. more likely to have a frost in scotland, but further south, it will not be farfrom zero in some rural areas. a cold start to the second half of the weekend, but we have this big area of high pressure sitting over the uk, that will inhibit to the cloud build—up. the weather front is brushing the far north—west, bringing some high cloud into northern ireland, later, into the north of scotland. as temperatures rise, there could be some cloud, not too much, may bejust an isolated light shower over the pennines and the south—east. on the whole, dry, more sunshine and for most of the uk, temperatures will be higher than they were today. that is the same as we head into next week. settled weather will be the story, it will be dry for the most part, more sunshine, and it should feel warmer as well, temperatures will be rising for many. not blue sky every day, some cloud coming in from the north—west, into parts of england and wales on monday. it should be dry, the wind will be light, and if anything, the temperatures are beginning to rise even higher, not farfrom 20 beginning to rise even higher, not far from 20 degrees through the central belt of scotland. that is monday, but the high pressure will stick around into the good part of next week. the position of the high pressure will be crucial, because towards the south—east, the air will not be as one, but in the north—west of uk, a southerly breeze will lift the temperatures. in the south—east, and easterly wind in the middle of the week. temperatures better than they have been, and in the sunshine it should feel pleasant. higher temperatures will be towards the
