With just days to go before the vote on her brexit deal, the Prime Minister has tried to persuade mps to support it by indicating that they could be given the power to decide whether the uk enters the controversial backstop arrangement for the irish border, or whether to avoid it by extending the transition period instead. Under theresa mays withdrawal agreement, after leaving the eu in march the aim is to negotiate a comprehensive trade deal with the eu by december 2020 the end of the transition period. If a trade deal isnt agreed, the backstop would come into force, meaning Northern Ireland would keep many eu rules so that no checks are needed on the irish border. But the alternative to the backstop would be to extend the transition period beyond 2020. Heres our Political Editor, laura kuenssberg. Her report does contain flash photography. Is there a compromise coming on the backstop . They need more than a wink to make this work. Well see, the attorney general says. Could the Prime Minister pull the vote . Remember, the brexit deals unpopular, even with this lot, because of the so called backstop, the promise that avoids a hard border in Northern Ireland if there isnt a trade deal. So, the Prime Minister arrived in the radio studio this morning, with a compromise. I recognise there are concerns from colleagues about the role of parliament, about the sovereignty of the uk in relation to that issue. So, im talking to colleagues about how parliament might have, and how we can look at parliament having a role, going into that, and, if you like, and coming out. She might give mps an extra vote to choose whether to keep the status quo, the so called transition period, or parliament having to renew the backstop every year. The fuss is all about the backstop, the guarantee of no hard border on the island of ireland, that would leave Northern Ireland more closely tied to the eu than the rest of us. Thats whats putting off so many tory backbenchers from backing the Prime Ministers compromise. So, what number ten is trying to do now is wave around an olive branch that could give this place more say over how it works. But the eu is sceptical, and for now its not winning many people round. Its a red herring. However superficially attractive it may seem, it will have no force whatsoever in this context. Can there be a change of heart . I doubt it very much, but you never know what youre going to hear, do you . Dozens and dozens of the Prime Ministers own mps are set against her compromise. There will be dragons, i expect. So the governments invited them to meetings to spell out what might happen if we leave the eu with no deal at all. A helpful meeting. But listen to the influential chair of the tories backbenchers, who thinks the pm might have to delay the vote if she cant sort out the backstop. If that question can be answered in the course of the next few days, all well and good. If it cant, i certainly would welcome the vote being deferred until such time as we can answer that question. Today, belfast there is little sign of its history of violence and the backstop is to help ensure those days never return. A couple of hours ago compromise did emerge, a backbench amendment, a change to the boat next week in the name of backbenchers which does as i understand it crucially have the backing of the government. The idea is to give mps a bit more of a say in when we go into that controversial backstop and also to give some more say to the Stormont Assembly over in Northern Ireland which of course remember is not actually sitting at the moment but within less than two hours this idea ofa within less than two hours this idea of a compromise has already been dismissed by some brexiteers as certainly not being a big enough step and also by the leader of the dup, arlene foster, who said this kind of domestic tinkering just doesnt cut it. In terms of that enormous challenge of winning that vote next week, there seems really to be fiddling around the edges rather than offering anything fundamental. There isnt a long time to go now, only a few days until the vote, but weve said it before, ill say it again, things can move quickly round here, but at this moment in time it still really feels that number ten is trying to do something that feels almost impossible. Laura, thank you. The mobile phone operator 02 has begun restoring Data Services to some of its customers, after millions were unable to access the internet or in some cases makes calls all day. The company, which also provides services for the sky and tesco networks, is blaming a software problem. 02 has apologised and says it hopes all customers will have full service again by tomorrow. Ericssons statement seemed to indicate it had made a basic error. An initial root cause analysis indicates that the main issue was an expired certificate in the software. Its a digital catastrophe of the 21st century. We are out of internet, out of services, out of our loved ones nearby, out of capacity of payments. 02 says ericsson has promised it that everything will be working again by tomorrow morning. The decision has been taken in response to growing concerns about the high number of betting ads on tv. Anti gambling campaigners say that normalises betting and contributes to the rise in problem gamblers. 0ur Sports Correspondent Richard Conway has the story. The worlds of betting and sport have long been intertwined, but that relationship has always been controversial. Now, britains biggest bookmakers have agreed a whistle to whistle ban on tv ads around live sport, with the industry seemingly listening to Public Opinion and political pressure. The fashion chain ted baker has appointed a law firm to investigate allegations against its chief executive ray kelvin. He has been accused of giving forced hugs and massages to staff. Bbc news has heard of more allegations including an accusation of him grabbing an employee by the throat and pushing them against the wall. But the company says these claims dont reflect the organisation. Our special correspondent lucy manning has spoken to two former employees. Hes the man behind ted baker, ray kelvin is its founder and boss. He prefers to shield his face but cant hide from the allegations from some staff of inappropriate hugs, massages, sexual comments and even physical force. The government has promised to overhaul laws on detaining people with Mental Health problems in england and wales, after an independent review described existing legislation as outdated. The review called for an end to the use of police cells to detain patients and for Police Vehicles to be used less frequently to transport them. The last time we changed the Mental Health act, the prevailing view was very much about public safety, after some terrible incidents. Now, the public view, ithink, is very much more about caring and getting more Compassionate Care for those with these most severe illnesses. The review covers england and wales. The government says it now wants to amend the law. In scotland, legislation in 2003 improved patients rights. Northern ireland passed new legislation in 2016, but it hasnt yet been implemented. Patients need to have a voice. Dele was treated for schizophrenia. He says he was well cared for, but he feels when patients are detained, more should be done to involve them in key decisions. We should be allowed to speak on how we feel, inside of us. We should be allowed to talk about treatment for our diagnosis. We should have the opportunity to talk and share with psychiatrists our feelings and what we want to get out of the services. The review addresses these concerns, but it says the nhs will have to invest more in the right sort of care. The proposals are really welcome, however, what weve got to see is crisis care provided in new settings. Thats going to cost money, and we dont know where that moneys going to come from. Her yacht was badly damaged and lost its mast in a storm in the Southern Ocean, about 2000 miles west of the southern tip of south america.
