Where actors were asked to wear black, people attending tonights awards are being asked to wear a white rose pin to show support for the anti harassment movement. Time for a look at the weather. Heres susan powell. Some settled weather on the way in the coming days but not to say nothing will change was not quite a big change especially for the start of next week as it is going to feel much colder. But this is the reason for the settled weather at the moment. An area of High Pressure. At the moment it is meaning a lot of fine weather for the afternoon with some patchy cloud still across central areas of england. But from any some bright sunny spells and temperatures already just a any some bright sunny spells and temperatures alreadyjust a shade down on yesterday with highs of around 9 degrees. Tonight the cloud thins out and breaks allowing for quite a widespread frost to develop. Down to around 3 in rural areas. Thursday gets off to a cold but bright start from any. If anything we tend to see the cloud building through the course of the day so perhaps some hazy sunshine in the afternoon. Even some drizzle in the far north west. And temperatures falling a couple of degrees. Then the easterly wind really starts to build going through friday and that will have the biggest impact on the way that things feel. Even by friday it is going to be colder than we have been used to. For the weekend High Pressure is still with us, parking both weather friends out in the atlantic. High pressure ring a lot of dry and fight fine weather for the weekend. But by sunday temperatures just 4 degrees but factor in that wind as well. Feeling colder than that. Now High Pressure still with us next week, shifting its orientation slightly. Feeding in error coming from siberia. And there is the risk of some snow on into next week. The uncertainty in the forecast will be just exactly which direction the cold air tracks in. It could be to the south and into france or could be the uk bracing for a big freeze. But either way it isa for a big freeze. But either way it is a cold outlook for next week and widespread frost which will linger by day and a biting wind boot. Please be aware that it is going to turn bitterly cold. Good afternoon, im Hugh Woozencroft with a look at the days sports news here on bbc news. And we start of course, at the Winter Olympics where they are into the late evening, where the spotlights are well and truly on the womens bobsliegh. Team gbs Womens Curling Team has reached the semifinals of the event at the Winter Olympics. They came through a very difficult matchup against the defending champions canada, snatching the win with two points on the final end. The 6 5 win for team gb also means the canadians are knocked out, failing to reach the semifinals for the first time. Delighted. We knew it was going to bea delighted. We knew it was going to be a tough end against canada. We came out and played a rate end. We are delighted with it. How about the jump are delighted with it. How about the jump in the air . We saw you leaving the ice when you played the brilliant shot. I cant remember it. When you are in that zone, luke forget about the small things. Im glad i landed safe on my feet. Things were very different for team gbs men, as the United States scored four points in the eighth end to hand britain a crushing 10 4 defeat. That means gb have a play off on the way against switzerland, just after midnight tonight to see if they can make the final four. We will have to talk about that again, what we could have done differently, what we felt went right and what went wrong. There are a few things to discuss, we will try to learn from that and take it into the swiss game. From the ice to the snow. Billy morgan is into the final of the inaugural big air competition, scoring 90. 5 on his second run seven points off the top score. Hell have to push his tricks a bit further on saturday morning, morgan will be going for a medal. Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has named an unchanged starting line up for saturdays six nations meeting with england at murrayfield. The majority of small and Medium Sized Companies are still paying male employees more than their female colleagues, according to the latest government figures. Companies have six weeks left to report their gender pay gap. So far almost 1,000 businesses have responded out of the 9,000 asked. Our business and consumer correspondent correspondent, nina warhurst, has more. It is time to answer the question what does every man and woman in your company get paid . And if you line up their salaries, what is the figure in the middle of each sex, and what is the gap between those two figures . For 74 of companies this figure was higherfor men, 15 higherfor women. What this data does not look at is any difference in salaries between men and women who were doing the same job. But what it does show is that while there were lots of women lower paid jobs, women arent earning those big salaries in the same way as men. At clydesdale yorkshire bank, men earned 37 more than women. There was literally four days of meetings, and there was only one female in those four days. There were almost four times as many women in lower paid jobs. Only three women are on the board. It has been lonely at times. I regularly find myself in positions where there is not nearly as many women. We have set ourselves a target. So by 2020, we want to make sure that there is 40 of women in our most senior roles. So i think thats quite bold, and i think everybody in Financial Services should be making those kinds of targets and progressing towards them. Six weeks to ago, around 8,000 firms still to report, and then come the bigger questions what exactly do the full figures tell us and what should and can be done . Nina warhurst, bbc news. Heavy drinking may be a major risk factor for the early onset of dementia. Scientists in france looked at 57 thousand cases of dementia in people under 65 and found that a third could have been caused by alcohol related brain damage. Ben ando reports. Doctors already know heavy drinking can lead to problems in the brain, but this study focused on links specifically to early onset dementia, that means affecting people younger than 65. Researchers analysed the medical records of more than 30 Million People in france, whod spent time in hospital during 2008 and 2013. They published the results in the Lancet Health journal. In that nationwide group they found 1 Million People with dementia and of these 57,000 were under 65. Among those people, heavy drinking was linked to 39 , or nearly one in four cases. For this study, heavy drinking was defined as a daily intake of more than four units of alcohol for women and six for men, thats the equivalent of three pints of beer. Previous research has suggested that drinking small amounts, particularly of red wine, can have a positive effect. Those studies really focus on very modest levels of alcohol intake, perhaps one or two units a day, and perhaps that has lulled us into a false sense of security and perhaps we havent seen the other side of the curve, where people have higher levels of Alcohol Consumption that can be harmful to the brain in a variety of ways. The Alzheimers Society says its aware of the risks of heavy drinking and its advice to everyone remains the same try to drink no more than 1a units of alcohol per week. In the Business News britains Unemployment Rate has gone up for the first time in almost two years. The numbers are for the three months to december. Figures also showed the uk has seen its strongest two quarters of productivity growth since 2008,well have more in this in a moment. Shares in aa, the roadside recovery and Insurance Group have fallen by over one fifth after the firm warned that its full year profits are going to be disappointing. Why . Its been investing in new technology, while the higher Insurance Premium tax rate has put off insurance customers and theres been a fall in new memberships. Lloyds Banking Group has reported strong full year profits for its first year as a fully private enterprise since 2006. Profits were up 24 on last year. But its not out of the woods yet its had to put aside an extra £600 million to pay more compensation over mis sold payment protection insurance claims. The uk has seen the strongest two quarters of productivity growth since the recession of 2008, according to the latest figures. Output per hour rose 0. 8 in the three months to december, according to the office for national statistics. It follows growth of 0. 9 in the previous period. There was also a better than expected rise in wages. Excluding bonuses, earnings rose by 2. 5 year on year. However, unemployment rose for the first time in two years but still remains low at 4. 4 . Joining me is lena komileva, managing director and chief economist at g plus economics. Thats a lot of figures we have just talked through. Overall, what pictured does that give you of the uk economy . The big growth in proactivity is wonderful news, showing that the economy is working through or perhaps getting out of bed decade long slump. There was the colla pse bed decade long slump. There was the collapse of the financial bubble between 2007 and 2009. That is great news. They are perhaps early signs that the financial economy, the digital revolution is starting to pay dividends into growth in the forms of higher productivity. When you mix that with weaker employment figures today, you are getting a sense that adds companies are now starting to be a bit more picky in terms of how they select skills, they are looking for what output per worker. That means stronger activity growth. They have had perhaps not such a strong labour market. It is early days, but something to watch was up it was the strongest two quarters since 2008. This most recent quarter, it is not. 8 it is 0. 8 , as opposed to 0. 9 last quarter. Is that heading in the wrong direction . It is very good news, because it suggests a more balanced recovery. From the bank of englands perspective, it is good news because strong productivity growth means that even if we see wages pick up, but the resilience is a welcome sign. Perhaps this kind of wage growth will not prove to inflate tariq, so rates to not have to be hiked much further. With the potential Interest Rate hikes, that is what we are expecting when an appointment was low, expecting wages to rise to push up inflation. How does that sit with the figures we have seen today . The bank of england has got mixed signals in terms of the Bigger Picture here. It is nowhere near the levels we saw before the financial crisis, so there is some way to go. Also, there are signals that companies are relying more on stronger output per worker. There is also some spare capacity. Although inflation pressures a re capacity. Although inflation pressures are there, they are probably not as embedded in the recovery, meaning the bank can probably take a few more months to consider how far and how fast it was to raise Interest Rates, which is good news for borrowers. Thank you very much for that. The oil company bp has said Oil Consumption will probably peak in the late 2030s. The world uses about 100 Million Barrels per day at the moment. Bp estimates that will go up by another 10 before levelling off. Meanwhile renewables are the Fastest Growing fuel source, and will increase five fold by 2040. Troubles at the diy business homebase has had a dramatic impact half a world away at the Australian Company wesfarmers, which bought the uk business two years ago. Glencore, the biggest mining group in the world has had its strongest ever year. 2017 profits went to almost 7 billion nearly £5 billion. Last year it made a loss. The reasons for the recovery is simple good Economic Growth round the world and its been cutting costs. Before we go, lets take a look at what the markets have been doing. The ftse has been fairly flat today. Aa are now down 21 after that profit warning. The lloyds Banking Group, up almost 3 . They issued a strong profit for the year. The first year since they have had a zero government ownership. The governments of their last shares backin governments of their last shares back in may. Metro bank, they are down almost 5. 5 . Despite it being the first year they have announced a profit. Thats all the Business News. Prime ministers questions returned this lunchtime following last weeks break. Theresa may faced questions on brexit and syria and the oxfam scandal from mps. Norman smith was following proceedings and joins me now from westminster. Thank you. A bit of a variety of all sorts of different questions. Most of the coverage will focus on brexit, as usual, withjeremy corbyn trying to glean some indication from mrs me about what sort of final brexit deal she is seeking. We are brexit deal she is seeking. We a re halfway brexit deal she is seeking. We are halfway through the six speeches we were told would set up the governments negotiating position. So far, all we have had is waffle a nd position. So far, all we have had is waffle and empty rhetoric. Businesses need to know. People want to know. Even her backbenchers are demanding to know. But it is not clear from todays exchanges, this government isnt on the road to brexit, it is on the road to nowhere. We could get some clarity from mrs me tomorrow when she complete that cabinet meeting. This is what she said chua seeking today. This is what she said she was seeking today. I thing what she said she was seeking today. Ithingl what she said she was seeking today. I thing i have what she said she was seeking today. Ithing i have mentioned what she said she was seeking today. I thing i have mentioned today that hisjob is to i thing i have mentioned today that his job is to ask a question, but im perfectly happy to respond to the points he made. He said that we have not set out any detail. Can i suggest to him that he needs to think very carefully about the Security Partnership that we want with the European Union when we have left . To mull over brexit and the pmqs, iam here left . To mull over brexit and the pmqs, i am here with my guests. Lets look at this letter that has beenin lets look at this letter that has been in the headlines, which has been in the headlines, which has been sent to mrs me by brexit supporters. It is basically a warning, do it our way or you are in trouble. I read the letter and i dont think it says that. It says to stick to your guns, it should be delivered. There is nothing said today that would alarm the people who wrote that letter. She was speaking about a close trade deal. We also want control of our borders. Was there not an implied threat . There were suggestions which may be regarded as red lines which, if she brea ks regarded as red lines which, if she breaks them, while the tighter. Wont be betide her. Im confident on her glittering on the deal without any fudging. We have heard from labour that they want to be in a Single Market. What is going on here with this letter . It shows that the tory party are split from top to bottom and what they will do about brexit. This is why we are so badly prepared for brexit. The government, 1. 5 years after the referendum, we dont know what the bespoke arrangement is going to look like, thatis arrangement is going to look like, that is because shes tried to shore up that is because shes tried to shore up the divisions in her own party. Until the government get agreement with itself, it will be difficult for them to get agreement with anyone else. The loser is the country. Isnt mrs me right to be worried about the brexit supporters, given that the direction of travel is towards a softer brexit, rather than the sort of brexit the supporters want . It would be in this countrys economic interest. What we saw today was the extreme eurosceptics in the tory party demanding a hard brexit with menaces. Obviously, there are 20 more than they need to trigger a leadership election, they asked for a range of things that are impossible to deliver, including wto rules, ensuring that if we come out of the European Union we cannot have any connection to the Single Market or the economic area. That would be a disaster for the country. She was being basically told that if she didnt deliver the impossible, a new trade deal in an impossible and out of time, they have the power to trigger a leadership election. Of time, they have the power to trigger a leadership electionm might say the same thing is being donein might say the same thing is being done in the labour party whether 60 or so backbenchers putting pressure onjeremy corbyn to head towards staying in a Customs Union. You want to be ina staying in a Customs Union. You want to be in a Customs Union after the transition phase . What we dont want isa hard transition phase . What we dont want is a hard brexit which implies a ha rd is a hard brexit which implies a hard border in northern ireland, which cuts staff from our trading partners who currently supply us with over 52 of our foreign trade. That would be a disaster for my constituents, for the automotive industry, and cause a huge dip in our economic prospects. That is not in the interest of the country. We see a Prime Minister putting her Party Interest and her own survival ahead of national interest, which is shameful. Your leader raised the appalling situation in syria. What is your solution . Are you suggesting that somehow the west should get directly involved again, will be in the hand wringing business . M directly involved again, will be in the handwringing business . It is tragic on a number of fronts, what president assad is doing, and what the turkish government are doing as well. It is not enough for the British Government to sit back and do nothing about this. It needs to be taking some international leadership. Like what . Like demanding an emergency meeting with the un security council. The world has to take action. Isnt the blunt truth we can blow hot and cold about russia, president putin will pay precisely no attention to us unless it is backed by the threat of force . We had a vote in parliament on force, and that was rejected. I think he is right, raising the issue highlights the importance of it. We can raise the heat and raise the pressure on russia, because there is no solution to the situation in syria without russia being on board as well. We will have to leave it there. Penchee for your time. That is the round up of primus s questions. Prime minister s questions. We are coming up to afternoon life with simon mccoy, who will have all the latest goings on in westminster and todays news. Until then, we will bejoining and todays news. Until then, we will be joining susan and todays news. Until then, we will bejoining susan powell for the weather forecast. There is a decent sunshine to be sound found. But the rest of the day isa sound found. But the rest of the day is a fine and dry one, thanks to this High Pressure. You will be bored of that in the coming days because it will be with us for at least the next ten days. This afternoon, fine weather on the way, the kirk allowed across the midlands, giving a bit of rain or drizzle, but perhaps the exception had not ruled. A dry story was a decent sunshine and highs of between seven and nine celsius. A lot of the cloud will thin and break tonight, and temperatures will come down with and temperatures will come down with a widespread frost developing. Also patches of freezing fog. Those of 2 minus three. The brightest top of the day will be the morning. Through the day will be the morning. Through the afternoon, the cloud will thin with the sunshine turning haiti. Temperatures edging down again, just four degrees in birmingham at norwich was a sunshine turning hazy. Friday should bring us more sunshine. A bright day, but considerably chillier with highs of just five or six. Here is the High Pressure, still with us for the weekend. A big area of High Pressure, holding the weather fronts at bay in the atlantic. It also means there will be a lot of dry and find weather. Temperatures still sliding away, just four degrees. Cold even by the end of the weekend. The High Pressure shifts and little more into the early part of next week. These isobars are like a pipeline, all the way from siberia, bringing cold airaround pipeline, all the way from siberia, bringing cold air around the southern flank and into the centre of europe and potentially our way. We could see some snow showers coming in off the north sea. Some uncertainty as to weather it will be further south, mostly into france, or pushing all the way across the British Isles and into the atlantic. If it is that second scenario, we will feel very cold. A chilly snap nonetheless next week, and a biting easterly wind. Also the chance of snow. Worth staying chewed to the forecast for the details on that. Staying tuned. Hello, youre watching afternoon live im simon mccoy.
