Thousands of homes in Northern Ireland and wales are left without power as storm ophelia sweeps across the British Isles commuters in scotland are being warned of difficult travelling conditions this morning. To not just scotland to notjust scotland but parts of north east england does well but it is in scotland and north east scotla nd is in scotland and north east scotland have gusts of 60 or 70 mph will that could possibly lead to trouble disruption. The win will ease over the day and there is rain and the forecast but i will have more later. Of the wind will ease. In sport, what a night there is in store for tottenham. They take on the 12 time winners real madrid in the Champions League their manager says its so special to be playing at the bernabeu. And some are calling it red october the extreme weather conditions left many of us with some amazing views. Well have more of the pictures youve been sending us throughout the morning. And that was one of salford here. It is so spooky. In sheffield it felt. You know, in a horrorfilm at about ten minutes before the first person it felt like that. could not agree with you more. More on that later. Lets start with our main story. House prices in large parts of england and wales are lower now than they were ten years ago, according to Research Carried out by the bbc. The figures show that if you adjust for inflation, average values in Northern Areas have dropped by more than 10 . Sean is in Bradford City centre this morning. They found that house prices are lower now than they were ten years ago in 58 of all wards in england and wales when you adjust for inflation. Bradford is a good example of what we are talking about today. If you went to a cafe this morning, you may have seen headlines about 5 price rise nationally across the country on average. But bradford, if youd drill down here, has actually seen house prices fall by over 50 in the last ten years if you take inflation into account. This has come about because of this data and analysis done by the bbc and the open Data Institute which has looked at not just average large areas but specific wards around the country in england and wales. They found that in over half of those areas, half of those wards, house prices have been falling over the last ten years since 2007. If you drill down further into different regions you can see that the north east has been the worst performing in terms of house prices. Similarly, yorkshire, where we are this morning, over 90 of wards here have seen house price falls. In wales you have around 90 of wards in wales have lower house prices now than they were ten years ago, taking prices into account. This builds a picture but, of course, why does National Averages up course, why does National Averages up around 5 year on year at the minute . That is because some areas, and there are only three of them, london, the south east and the east england, they have seen house prices rise over the last ten years. All morning we will discuss this but one example here is jo jo morning we will discuss this but one example here isjojo and her family. She is trying to sell her home and is struggling to get more money than she paid for it. To be able to get up and go, to decide to sell our house and get up and go, you think, oh, no, how will we sell it now . You have to think of creative ways. Maybe we can rent somewhere else. Our creative ways. Maybe we can rent somewhere else. 0urfirst creative ways. Maybe we can rent somewhere else. Our first choice, which was ok, let us move on, is kind of gone. So an example there of why those average figures. We often try to look into this but over the morning we will look into why house prices have not risen in so many places around the uk. I havejust spotted the table tennis table now, so spotted the table tennis table now, soi spotted the table tennis table now, so i understand what you are talking about earlier, dan. Thousands of children wont be going to school this morning and around 8,000 homes across ireland and wales are without power, as storm 0phelia finishes its journey across the uk. People in scotland are being warned of more problems this morning, with winds of up to 70 Miles Per Hour expected during the rush hour. 0ur ireland correspondent chris page is in londonderry for us. How are things there this morning . The weather at is certainly not pleasant, it is wet and windy but tame compared to what was happening yesterday afternoon and into the evening when we were being battered by wind of around the five mph here on the north coast of Northern Ireland and then across the island itself. People relieved today that the storm has passed but it is still not yet a normal day. All schools in Northern Ireland will be closed for a second day. Likewise in the rubble Irish Republic. Things will be getting back to normal in terms of public transport, there were a lot of flights and bus cancellations but the hope is that today everything will get back on track. You will be a huge cleanup operation. There are trees down, there are electricity poles down. 0fficials trees down, there are electricity poles down. Officials from stormont said the department of infrastructure will be busy as well as the engineers from the electricity company, just assessing the damage and how they can put things right for homes that are out of power. In the Irish Republic of other forecasters had warned that the storm was going to be violent, destructive and potentially life threatening. They did prove to be the case. Three people there have died. Two had trees fell on their carand died. Two had trees fell on their car and another man was killed in a chainsaw accident as he was dealing with a fallen tree. It has been a sad 2a hours in the Irish Republic and today the focus will be on trying to get things back to a normal state of affairs. We got a sense of what it has been like from the pictures there. The efforts to strike a deal in the brexit negotiations should accelerate in the months ahead according to a joint statement from theresa may and the president of the european commission, jean claude juncker. 0ver dinner in brussels they discussed how to break the deadlock ahead of a crucial european summit which takes place later this week. 0ur Political Correspondent alex forsyth joins us now alex how likely are we to see any progress . Has the meeting gone well . The whole point of this dinner was to try to get things moving because as you say, parts of this negotiation are stuck in a deadlock. Specifically the discussions around what the uk should pay brussels. From the very little detail we have had coming out of this dinner it does not seem to have been any major breakthrough. But what is important is that both sides have signed up to that statement saying that things should accelerate in the next few months and it is politically important for theresa may because that allows her to counter any critics are saying look, we are making progress. This week, all 27 eu leaders and the Prime Minister will get together in brussels and at that point they will decide officially is on us has been done in the talks so far to move onto phase two, which is talking about trade in future relationships. That is what the uk really wants. Even despite this dinner, it is pretty unlikely that the other 27 countries will sign off and say ok, lets get on with it. At least now both sides can say things are moving, albeit very slowly. Senior labour mps, including party leaderJeremy Corbyn, could face a scramble to secure new parliamentary seats after the Boundary Commission for england confirmed plans to abolish their existing constituencies. The recommendations, which are part of a plan to cut the number of members of parliament from 650 to 600, would also throw into doubt the parliamentary future of foreign secretary, borisjohnson. However, the overall planned sha ke up of constituencies will still leave the tories as the main winners. Wildfires in portugal are now known to have killed at least 36 people, as Drought Conditions and strong winds spread blazes through the countrys central and nothern areas. Thousands of firefighters have been tackling more than 600 separate forest fires since sunday. In North Western spain three people have died and there has been widespread damage from wildfires some of which are thought to have been started deliberately. Now, dont have nightmares, but after 33 years the bbc has confirmed its going to drop the late night version of crimewatch. The corporation will no longer make the crime solving show and will instead increase the number of episodes it makes of daytime programme crimewatch roadshow. Keith doyle reports this is about real life crime, not the stuff of fiction. Its been a cornerstone of the bbc schedule since it was first broadcast in 1984, reconstructing crimes and appealing for public help. First hosted by nick ross, some of the bbcs biggest names have fronted the show, including jill dando. Five arrests in this last month, all as a direct result of viewers calls. Her murder in 1999 also becoming a crimewatch appeal. Real crime cctv footage and mugshots of britains most wanted got the publics assistance, and crimewatch helped bring many criminals to justice, including the killers of james bulger, and michael sams, who murdered julie dart and kidnapped stephanie slater. It also helped reunite people with lost possessions, notably this rare stradivarius violin. It is 300 years old and worth £1. 2 million. Recently it has been hosted byjeremy vine, but it is thought falling ratings have taken it off prime time. Instead, the bbc says it will make more crimewatch roadshow for daytime, where there might be less need for its trademark sign off. Meanwhile, dont have nightmares. That was always difficult because you were always likely to have a nightmare afterwards. It is quite an institution, wasnt it . Lets show you these pictures from paddington station yesterday afternoon. The duchess of cambridge took up paddington bears offer of a dance, as she waved off children on a Charity Train ride. Carol has the weather and lots to talk about. Good morning to you both. We have been discussing ex hurricane 0phelia. Looking at the satellite picture you can see the rotation around her, that tight squeeze. Is the hacks hurricane continues to push ina the hacks hurricane continues to push in a north easterly direction. This morning, the strongest winds will be part across parts of eastern scotla nd will be part across parts of eastern scotland and north east england. You can see that better looking at the isobars we have strong to cross the north of scotland with heavy wind and a weather front approaching the far south of england. If you are down towards the north east of england and the south of the pennines, that is where we will have the strongest winds. Gusts of 60 mph. It could cause disruption to travel. You might find things like high sided vehicles are affected, trees uprooted and a similar conditions to what we saw in parts of the country yesterday. It will be windy across Northern Ireland. Not as windy as it was this time yesterday with coastal gales across scotland and england. South of all about, a quiet today. 0ff across scotland and england. South of all about, a quiet today. Off to a great start and we will have temperatures around 10 1a celsius first thing. Not particularly cold. The same for wales and South West England. Away from the course of wales, a quieter day with some sunshine. It is north east england and down towards the pennines, parts of scotla nd and down towards the pennines, parts of scotland that we are looking at the strongest gusts for the next 3 4 hours. After that, you can see how x hurricane 0phelia pushes away and the winds start to ease. We are looking at ten in the north, 17 in the south. Not quite as long as yesterday. Parts of the south east hit almost 23 safely. Then as we mentioned some rain coming up across the South West England through the course of the seasoning and overnight. Celsius. Some of the rain will be heavy. We will also have some breaks in the cloud so for Northern Ireland, for example, we could see fog forming tonight and across the north of scotland, clearer skies. The risk in rural areas are the frost. Tomorrow, the rain again across some southern areas. A bit of wiggle room with this so it may be a bit more further north or south. A bit more cloud around for parts of the uk tomorrow but where we have the clearest skies is where we will see the sunshine. What you will notice is it wont be as windy. Temperatures 10 18. Then, the outlook. It will remain fairly u nsettled. The outlook. It will remain fairly unsettled. What we have thursday friday is an area of low pressure coming in across the southern areas. That will bring in some rain but also stronger winds. Look what is following on in its heels. This next area of low pressure and as we go from friday into saturday, it could bring some severe gales along the coasts. These two areas are what we are keeping a close eye on. Yesterday and today, a turn of the north and as we head into the weekend, a turn off the south. Not as strong as what we saw for Northern Ireland and the republic of ireland yesterday. We arejust we are just about to look at pictures of the red sky and you know why this happened, dont you . Hurricane 0phelia had tropical air and was coming up from the south, dragging in some desert sand from the sahara but we think it is more to do with the fires that are parts in parts of spain and portugal. I will tell you more about that at 715. Oh, you are such a tease. Brilliant thank you, carol. My daughter explained the saharan sand to me. So its not so much about it landing on yourcar. To me. Im showing you the front page of the Financial Times about a collision fire, far away. It is a billion light years away. It is a billion light years away. Jelena can billion billion billion. Billion billion billion. They also have the sound of the event. And it wasnt as dramatic as an explosion. It was just a little blip. Interesting pieces in the sports papers but this captured my imagination. In the daily express. You remember when scott walling, the wales hooker, had his hand bitten by a lion when they were on tour in south africa . It looks like, i mean, there is a video you can see online. This line decided to have a bit of a nip and Scott Baldwin said it was because he he stroked the female first and the lion thought he would have a bite. He bit right through his hand. The tooth went from one side of his hand to the other and then he got a terrible infection that started tracking all the way up his arm. There was a risk that Scott Baldwin could have lost his arm after being lifted bitten by a lion. I read his costars saying it was really stupid. Everyone else was doing it. All the other players at giving him a good stroke. doing it. All the other players at giving him a good stroke. I thought he was the only one. On the video, you can see a few people doing it. A report by the Charity Childline said theyd been taking 60 calls a day last year, some from children as young as ten. Breakfasts tim muffett has been to meet two teenagers who called for help. I was feeling overwhelmed with stress and anxiety. I would spend hours at my laptop, getting fatter and sat up. Rebeccas words are being spoken by someone else. Its not her real name but she is 17 and has on many occasions found life overwhelming. I felt suicidal after my exams. I began self harm. My pa rents my exams. I began self harm. My pa re nts ha d my exams. I began self harm. My parents had no idea. Ifelt so alone and isolated and had no one to talk to and would call childline four times a day. The advice they gave, what impact did it have on you . M had a huge impact. They got the balance right. Knowing its something you shouldnt do that knowing if you are self harming, you area victim, knowing if you are self harming, you are a victim, not someone to be judged. Last year, childline received its highest ever number of calls from young people feeling suicidal. It carried out on average 62 suicide counselling sessions every day. That is over 22,000 across the year. And that figure was up across the year. And that figure was up 15 from the think from the previous 12 months. There are a lot of pressures put on young people in this day and age and social media doesnt help. People put their perfect lives online, people never see the struggles they are having. Is someone who is now feeling better, what would you say to somebody who is watching this who may be feeling what you felt . You have a future, it is waiting for you, you just need to seek help. High, jamie. Good to you, you just need to seek help. High, jamie. Good to meet you. Jamie is now 19 and studying at college. In his early teens, he experienced physical, verbal and Cyber Bullying and contacted childline. Leigh i was experiencing a lot of suicidal feelings that were linked to bullying. I was experiencing. Just having someone talk to that was impartial but dont know the ins and outs, dont know who you are, what you tell them is what you want to tell them. There has been an increase in the number of children contacting childline with suicidal thoughts. Do you have any idea why that might be . I think there is a lot of pressure on young people to be the dominant character. Digital can be used for so many good things but its such a poisonous tool as well, it can be used in so many cool ways. So you are 19 now and you are studying, your life is back on track. What would you choose that rock what would you say to somebody who is feeling what you once did . What would you say to someone . Who is feeling what you once did . What would you say to someone . M who is feeling what you once did . What would you say to someone . It is a big step in fixing the problems, to ask for help. Brea kfasts tim muffett reporting there. The last fight was brilliant. It was incredible. It was a spine tingling. Some interesting information about house prices this morning. In Bradford City centre with detailed and good morning. Bradford is a good example this morning of what is really happening with house prices around the country, how often do we talk about that headline figure of house prices rising on average. Drill down and that is not the case. Iam in drill down and that is not the case. Iamina drill down and that is not the case. I am in a cafe this morning helping to prepare breakfast. We have siren here. We are talking all morning about drilling down into local house price data because we always see the house press rising headline. Is it a topic of conversation here in bradford . I know there is a lot of new players because of the regeneration of the city centre so most people have moved into the city but wider than that i am uncertain. In terms of yourself, i know you are hoping to purchase somewhere in the north in yorkshire. How is that looking to you at the minute . Are there bargains . Do people want to sell . People do want to sell but some people are Still Holding onto their properties because they are not worth what thought they would be at this point. Somebody working here, their house is worth less than what she bought it for so she is not moving. That may be a common story and theme throughout the morning. Thank you for having this morning. That is one example. If you can get the price that you purchased the house four years ago, that could have an effect on the economy and on the local area. Will have attracted to men who look at this often. You look at the economy for city centres comparing cities around the country. How much of an issue is it that london and the south east see an increase in prices but today we see many other areas around the country not seeing a rise, seen falls in fa ct. Not seeing a rise, seen falls in fact. It is a challenge for a few reasons. For london and some of the other places it is a problem because people are being dragged out of opportunities over there. A booming economy with lots ofjobs available but no one can access them. Further north, people who own houses are losing money at because house prices are falling. Is the National Housing crisis but rather a crisis in the Greater South east and we need more houses there and improved house quality in the north. Now, you look at house prices all over the country. Isnt it a good thing that in some areas house prices have been falling in talk about First Time Buyers . It is about massive disparity. If you go to london there are big issues in people being able to access housing. The average deposit for a First Time Buyer in is around £99,000. If you compare that to the north east, there is 203 of these local wards where the average house price is below £100,000. For those people, the problem they face is having enough housing wealth to be able to trade up the housing ladder. Surely if you look at someone like bradford it has seen house prices fall by over 50 in real terms, taking inflation into account. What are the consequences of that when it happens . For people who own houses, particularly at the top of the market it is a problem for them because they have lost money. On lsi, people who are trying to get into the Housing Market is probably a good thing for them because the house is to be. What they are trying to do is keep house prices stable so people do not lose money. And as soon as wages rise and more people can get on the ladder. First time purchaser, once you have bought the house you do not want it to fall, do you . There are people who would wish to see house price falls to make the market accessible. I think that is dangerous because it has big impact on housing wealth. What is important to note First Time Buyers is that the challenge is very different across the country. There are challenges across the country and that is the result of mortgage regulation which means the deposit for First Time Buyers are relatively higher across wide parts of the country. Thank you very much to both of you. Let you get on with a. We will be discussing this morning. You can have a go online as well. We have a little tool online where you can put in your postcode and see what has happened to prices in your ward because if we know one thing from this data it is not the same story across england and wales when we look at it this morning. Thank you very much. We will be back with you very much. We will be back with you throughout the morning. you very much. We will be back with you throughout the morning. I have looked at that. There is a map online where you can hover over the whole of england and wales and find your area. See what has happened over the last ten years to your house price. As we head through the course of the day, ex hurricane ophelia pulls away towards scandinavia and the winds start to ease down. They will still be showers to the north with a finger of rain coming up through southern areas. In between, there will be sunshine but you will notice it would feel as warm or as muggy as it would feel as warm or as muggy as it did yesterday. Its being dubbed krack and researchers say its a major Online Security flaw theyve exposed which could put the wi fi connections of businesses and homes right across the world at risk. They say unless its sorted it could leave our wifi connections open to hackers. So just how safe is our data and what could the consequences be if attackers did manage to get through . Lets get more from Cyber Security specialist paul vlissidis. What exactly is going on . Is our wi fi compromised . What exactly is going on . Is our wifi compromised . Yes, it is. Wifi has been around for ten years or more and what these researchers have found is that the wi fi networks have passwords on them which is typically the ones you have time, for example. They have found a way to bypass the password and will be able to see all the traffic on the network so, es. What should we be worried about . Yes. It doesnt affect Internet Banking or shopping online. It is because the browser you are using to go to the bank or the shop has its own encryption so that protects you from this. It is more important probably the businesses where information is flying around their network such as e mails and they may well be able to be seen by someone attacking them. Lets say someone is watching yesterday and they have wi fi in their home. What should they be concerned about . They shouldnt be too concerned. Someone has to be physically near the network to be able to do this. Secondly, for a lot of people, what they really need to watch out for is when they get an opportunity to update their laptop or update their phone, they should say yes and install the updates from their manufacturers, microsoft, apple. Their manufacturers, microsoft, apple, et cetera. The update will fix the problem. What about the businesses who should have things in place to safeguard against this . More of an issue, businesses have an internet of things and equipment on their networks, smart tvs for videoconferencing, and so forth. These are more difficult to update. Is there evidence that this has particularly been targeted yes . Yet . They have only announced it yesterday. What they have done is. It is called responsible disclosure. It is called responsible disclosure. It was known about seven months ago and they have been in touch with various manufacturers ever since then who have been working on fixes. They have announced it yesterday that the fixes will come out very quickly. I have been reading it in terms of mobile devices and android are so much more susceptible said the ability to cover it as a blanket doesnt work as well as with an iphone. They may be a bit slower to get the updates out. People are historically not good at updating their phones. People might not think it is necessary but this is a great idea of why it is necessary. Go home and update your phone. You are watching breakfast from the bbc. You are watching breakfast from the bbc. Breakfast. It is estimated that there are up to 100 shark attacks every year and although fatalities are rare they do happen. But now a new tool is being deployed to try to keep swimmers and surfers safe. Specially fitted drones are being used over the surf along the coast of new south wales. Hywel griffith has been to see them in action. A shadow in the sea or something more sinister . From the beach, its hard to tell, but from the skies, the drone has a clearer view. It feeds into deep learning software, which its claimed has a 92 success rate in spotting sharks, as well as less threatening species. Every time it sees a dolphin, whale or a swimmer in distress, it learns their shape. Launched along the beaches of new south wales, the drones can patrol for a0 minutes. Daniel was one of the first to train as a lifesaver pilot. I cant physically run out and grab a board and paddle out and save someone, but sitting on the beach, weve got eyes in the sky and were just another layer of protection, really. The drones dont only observe, they can react too, dropping an inflatable device to help people in the sea. They wont replace the use of controversial shark nets and drum lines, however, which some claim do more harm than good. Last year around australia, there were 17 unprovoked shark attacks. The number isnt that high compared to how many people enter these waters, but its a national preoccupation the question of how to share the beaches between the human beings and the sea life. When this great white washed onto sydneys shores recently, it was welcomed and christened fluffy. Not Everyone Wants to get so close, even if the chances of an attack are minimal. Its a human, innate fear of being attacked by a wild animal. But the risk to people that are entering the water, it rates so low on the scale as opposed to all other threats of going about your daily life. Traffic and cars and bee stings, all of those statistics. And for regulars in these waters, its all part of the experience. I was actually swimming here once at the back, i was six months pregnant and there was a shark alarm. I did freak out a bit if im going to die, id prefer to be taken by a shark than have a stroke and end up in a nursing home. The drones wont be on every beach every day, but they should give everyone a better understanding of whats down below. Hywel griffith, bbc news, sydney. Does that make you feel better about going in the water . I have fear of sharks a massive snakes but the drone, impressive. Although, istill dont like sharks. It gets very unlikely to bite your face off. Youre watching breakfast from bbc news. Analysis for the bbc of eight million house sales shows that average values in Northern Areas have declined by more than 10 only areas in the south and east of england saw rises. These findings contradict National Figures which suggest house prices are going up im in bradford to find out why a growing number of people in towns like this could end up losing money if they sell their homes. Good morning, its tuesday, the 17th of october. Also this morning thousands of homes in Northern Ireland and wales are left without power as storm ophelia sweeps across the British Isles commuters in scotland are being warned of difficult travelling conditions this morning. And some are calling it red october the extreme weather conditions left many of us with some amazing views. Well have more of the pictures youve been sending us throughout the morning. And that is where we are in salford. More on that later. House prices in large parts of england and wales are lower now than they were ten years ago, according to Research Carried out by the bbc. The figures show that if you adjust for inflation, average values in Northern Areas have dropped by more than 10 . Sean is in Bradford City centre this morning. For sale signs are in a familiar sign in the north east. Here, average house prices have dropped enormous money 5 of Council Wards since 2007. Lee purchased his home in 2008 £412,000. Almost one decade on it is now worth between 80 and £85,000. If you could sell the house tomorrow, how much would you lose . £30,000. We could lose more than that. That isjust £30,000. We could lose more than that. That is just what would go on the market for. In the north east, average prices in real terms have gone down in 94. 7 of all Council Wards in nt news. It is a similar story in wales where 90 of wards. In london, 99 of wards have seen prices rise in the same period. In pa rt prices rise in the same period. In part it is about a two speed economy. 30 economic catalyst has been much greater in london and the south east of the country and that feeds into population pressure which is much greater in london and the south and means a lack of House Building comes to the fore, driving prices in a way that simply has not happened in the north of england. Millions of homeowners in yorkshire, wales and the north east may be a surprise to discover their property has lost value in real terms over the last ten years. At the data demonstrates what many have long suspected, a growing disconnect between the capital, the south east and the rest of the country. Time now to talk to sean. Short, we have been so used to talking about house prices going up that you have looked at these figures. What are the key things . It is incredible. When you say half the price they were ten yea rs say half the price they were ten years ago. Wants around that, that is taking into account prices rising generally inflation. We call a real terms. It isnt what we often talk about when we talk about how quickly wages ride. In radford, if you zoom in towards the wards here, prices are down by more than 50 in real terms. Thing those figures in many areas around the country. But why is it that a couple months ago we got figures out from the land registry, the National House prices are up 5 or more . That is because it is an average price right across the country. That does not account. No one lives in an average british home, do they . Were looking at these in bradford this morning. These figures are about what is happening in your local area. That means there is a big disparity between what is happening in the rest of the country compare to the south east of england. That has economic consequences and that is what we will talk about later in the morning. Storm ophelia is finishing its journey across the uk this morning after leaving thousands of people without power. Lets get the very latest from our correspondent in londonderry. There have been dramatic pictures. How are things now . As you can see the weather is still not pleasant. It is still wet and windy. This is tame compared to what was happening here on the north coast and right across the island yesterday afternoon. We were being battered by winds of 60, 70 mph. The storm blew three. There is a sense of relief that the storm has by and large path. I am sure this is just the tail end of it. There is still a lot of work to be done in terms of the clear up operation. That is where the focus will be. In Northern Ireland, schools will be offer a second day. Some parents have raised their eyebrows about that and questioned whether readers really necessary that the reasons officials have given is that, firstly, schools need to expect their own throw misses the damage before they reopen, they need time to do that. And a journey to school could still be dangerous because there is debris lying at brown, electricity poles and trees down. Around 40 routes are still closed in Northern Ireland with the situation even worse and the Irish Republic. Those pictures that look dramatic and people, where they well prepared . And people, where they wellprepared . Yes. There was a lot of news and being told it was going to be serious. Forecasters were told it was likely to be the worst storm to hit ireland in over a century. Yesterday afternoon there was hardly anybody at work. Employers let their staff go home early. Schools were colleges as well. Universities were not teaching. Because people by and large did stay indoors, that was the best way of keeping people safe. That message did go out by and large it was heeded in the Irish Republic which got things worse, i believe the Northern Ireland on the whole, forecasters have warned that the storm was going to be violent and potentially life threatening and that proved to be the case when three people died in the republic because of the storm. Two had trees fall on their cars and another man died ina fall on their cars and another man died in a chainsaw accident when he was trying to remove a fallen tree. It has been a sad 24 hours in the Irish Republic and the focus will now be on trying to return things to a normal state of affairs. The effort to strike a deal on brexit should accelerate in the months ahead according to was joint statement between the british Prime Minister in the eu commissioner. Over dinner in brussels they discussed how to break the deadlock ahead of a crucial european summit which takes place later this week. Alexjoins us alex joins us now from westminster. An important dinner last night and a significant few days ahead. As you said, these talks have reached something of a stalemate. The Sticking Point was money, how much the uk should pay brussels upon leaving. The very few details that we have had from the dinner last night does not sound like there was a huge breakthrough. What is important is that both sides agreed with the statement which says that singh should accelerate in the months ahead. Clifford theresa may thatis months ahead. Clifford theresa may that is helpful in chicken cant predict assaying progress is being made. She will tell her cabinet that when they meet this morning. As you say, the test will come later this week when eu leaders get together for a big meeting week when eu leaders get together fora big meeting in week when eu leaders get together for a big meeting in brussels. That is when they will officially decide whether the talks so far have gone far enough on the issues of separation in order to move on the next phase which is to discuss trade which is what the uk government really wa nts which is what the uk government really wants to i suspect the dinner last night have not changed much. It is unlikely the eu leaders will agree to shift things forward but both sides can now say that things are moving, even if they arejust crawling along. Theresa may is now backin crawling along. Theresa may is now back in the uk. The eu leaders are due to be meeting on thursday this weekend, there is some sort ofjoint statement expected to be coming our way on friday. That will be something that will extend throughout the week. Portugal is holding three days of National Mourning after 36 people were killed in wildfires which have devastated the countrys central and Northern Areas. Thousands of firefighters have been tackling more than 600 separate forest fires since sunday. In North Western spain three people have died and there has been widespread damage from wildfires some of which are thought to have been started deliberately. 6000 firefighters were in action in portugal on monday as forest fires devastated the centre north of the country. Sunday had been the worst day so far this year with over 500 separate fires. The number of debt has risen steadily, even some blazes have been brought under control. In many cases, locals suspect arson. But the severe drought of recent months mean that even accidental ignitions can spread rapidly to the Prime Minister the Prime Minister acknowledged that poor management of forest and the dry weather were factors but arson could not be ruled out. Translation the situation is aggravated by extreme weather. Drought and by the wind. There is no self ignition of the forest, what there is is an intentional creating of fires or negligence. Across the border in galicia in North Western spain, forest fires have also claimed lives. Spains Prime Minister took time off from a constitutional crisis in catalonia on monday to see the situation on the ground. Portugals government has declared a state of calamity across more than half the country to free up resources and ease access to private property. Lower temperatures and long awaited rain may help douse fires but for now the country remains on maximum alert. After 33 years the bbc has confirmed its going to drop the late night version of crimewatch. That show isnt usually on after our programme. Lets go surely these pictures instead of paddington station yesterday afternoon. Lets go show you. The duchess of cambridge took up paddington bears offer of a dance, as she waved off children on a Charity Train ride. Paddington was later heard telling reporters that kate was a good mover and could even win strictly come dancing if she was in it. Thank you very much for showing us the photos of the extraordinary red sky we all saw yesterday. Carol explain why later but this close up came from lanarkshire. And in hampshire, some of you may recognise this, it is where Downton Abbey was filmed. It does look like ten minutes to armageddon. And finally from suffolk, this beautiful shot over the harbour yesterday afternoon. It is truly gorgeous. Over the harbour yesterday afternoon. It is truly gorgeousm was quite extraordinary because i was quite extraordinary because i was somewhere in the building and i walked out and it was three oclock and this extraordinary here spooky red light. I suppose it feelsjust weird to be that dark at that time of day. And it was. Was misty. Well, not quite misty, carol will explain, it was sandy and hazy. A bit like the sahara but also the wildfires in portugal and spain was involved in what we saw yesterday. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. This is a picture from outside the bbc in london yesterday. Some of us, it lasted for a couple of hours and when it cleared away, the sun came out. It is difficult to explain simply that i will have a bash. When you go outside in daylight, you associate that light with being white. It is made up of lots of different colours of the spectrum, like a rainbow. But they are all laid together so we see that as being white. One end of the spectrum is blue and the other end of the spectrum is rated. In between, we have greens and we have yellows. What happened yesterday was ex hurricane ophelia was dragging up all of this tropical air, this warm airfrom the all of this tropical air, this warm air from the south so we had this warm temperature at cross south east england yesterday but as well is that, it lifted some of the dust from the sahara, some of the debris from the sahara, some of the debris from the sahara, some of the debris from the wildfires in northern parts of spain and portugal and all of that was in the atmosphere and that reflected away the blues and the greens, leaving behind the oranges and the rates and so that is why it looked like the sky and the sun had gone orange or red. Then, as ophelia continue to drift and the wind changed direction, it blew it away and moved further north and where it was before, the sun came out. I hope that wasnt too concentrated that what we have this morning is once again, strong winds associated with hurricane Ophelia A Cross south east scotla nd hurricane Ophelia A Cross south east scotland and north east england. We are looking at costs of 60 miles an hour and possibly 70 mph. It is also still windy across Northern Ireland and we have coastal gales across north west england and west wales. As ex hurricane ophelia pools are way slowly through the course of the day, the winds will start to ease. Pulls away. We could see disruption to travel across north east england and south east scotla nd north east england and south east scotland and as well is that, we could have damaged two groups, power cuts, that kind of thing. If you are ina light cuts, that kind of thing. If you are in a Light Vehicle or high sided vehicle, take extra care. Across northern scotland, heavy rains and winds but not quite as strong as the central belt. Around edinburgh all the way down to the south pennines. That is where we have a Yellow Met Office warning for the strength of the wind. As a comfort the south this morning, our lot of dry weather around with a fair bit of sunshine and it isnt particularly cold. The wind is lighter than yesterday but still there are gales off the coast of wales. The strongest wind likely to cause disruption will be the next few hours across north east england and south east scotland. As ex hurricane ophelia pulls away, the winds will start to ease a touch. They will be showers across england, Northern Ireland and scotland. Some of which will be heavy. A lot of dry weather and sunshine. But it will build a cross which will bring rain. Through this evening and overnight, it will advanta north and east, it will be heavy. Advance. Under clear skies across the far north of scotland. We could see some frost in the rural areas still, comparatively mild as he pushed down towards the london area. Tomorrow, we will still have the rain continuing its journey in debt direction of the north and east. In of direction. Some sunshine across northern scotland and you will notice the winds will be much lighter than they have been in the last couple of days. Temperatures today and tomorrow close to where they should be at this stage in october, nothing like we had yesterday. As a move to thursday and friday, the next area of low pressure is coming our way from the southern counties and we think it will bring stronger winds and then as we head into the weekend, another one comes in. This one looks more potent than the first and we will be keeping a close eye on it. It could will it could bring severe gales. Thank you for the explanation, carol. Beautifully done. Great pictures of the red sky. This is cumbria. A beautiful sky radiating out through the clouds. Thank you for sending in many of your pictures. This is fantastic. This is in berkshire. It is outside canary wharf. It looks as if this crane is actually lifting up the red sun. Dew render the film empire of the sun . Do you remember. Render the film empire of the sun . Do you remember. Yes. Richard took this outside our building yesterday. Who knows when it will happen again . Lets bring you one of our other main stories this morning. We will be speaking to esther ra ntzen about childline. More children than ever have been calling a helpline to report theyve been having suicidal thoughts. A report by the Charity Childline said theyd been taking 60 calls a day last year, some from children as young as ten. Breakfasts tim muffett has been to meet two teenagers who called for help. I was feeling overwhelmed with stress and anxiety. I would spend hours at my laptop, getting sadder and sadder. Rebeccas words are spoken by someone else. Its not her real name. But she is 17 and has on many occasions found life overwhelming. I felt suicidal after my gcses finished. I began to self harm. My parents had no idea. I felt so alone and isolated and had no one to talk to and would call childline four times a day. The advice they gave, what impact did that have on you . It had a huge impact. They got the balance right. Knowing its something you shouldnt do but also knowing if you are self harming, you are a victim, not someone to be judged. Last year, childline received its highest ever number of calls from young people feeling suicidal. It carried out on average 62 suicide counselling sessions every day. That is over 22,000 across the year. And that figure was up 15 on the the previous 12 months. There are a lot of pressures put on young people in this day and age and social media doesnt help. People put their perfect lives online, people never see the struggles theyre having. As someone who is now feeling better, what would you say to somebody who is watching this who may be feeling what you felt . You have a future, it is waiting for you, you just need to seek help. Hi,jamie. Good to meet you. Jamie is now 19 and studying at college. In his early teens, he experienced physical, verbal and Cyber Bullying and contacted childline. I was experiencing a lot of suicidal feelings that were linked to bullying. Just having someone talk to who was impartial, that dont know the ins and outs, that dont know who you are, what you tell them is what you want to tell them. There has been an increase in the number of children contacting childline with suicidal thoughts. Do you have any idea as to why that might be . I think theres a lot of pressure on young people to be the dominant character. Digital can be used for so many good things but its such a poisonous tool as well, it can be used in so many cruel ways. So you are 19 now and you are studying, your life is back on track. What would you say to someone watching this who is feeling how you once did . Its horrifying, how difficult it is to ask for that help but its a big step in fixing the problems. If you want to call any numbers, we will put that on our page. We will speak to Esther Rantzen a little bit later about it. Lease 26 people are known to have died in portugal after the wildfires that have devastated parts of the country. More than 600 fires have swept through northern and central areas since sunday. Dozens more people have been injured as properties, forest and farmland we re as properties, forest and farmland were destroyed. Last night, nick spoke to radio 5 about what he experienced. The area, as you progress northwards, as you progress more rural and goes into mountains, it appears that has taken an amount of battering. I have a farm there and though i couldnt go in and inspect the farm because the roads had been cordoned off, i managed to get up a bit higher and look in the general area and my expectations was that everything was burnt. A number of people have lost houses. A great many people have lost farmland and i believe, im sorry to say, i believe there have been some fatalities as well. So you think your farm has been burned through . Yeah. There wasnt so much at my farm. It was still a work in progress. Im not as terribly affected as the people, for example, when i went to a reconnaissance to see what the progress of the fire was, i could see it could come down from the mountains into groups of houses and in the shelter, i heard the firemen we re in the shelter, i heard the firemen were pretty much outnumbered by the multiple blazes that were spreading and they there was left than a handful of people to deal with these fires that were cropping up. There we re fires that were cropping up. There were doing a very good job with the resources they had but realistically, because of the incredible wins and the gusts, it was a very incredible wins and the gusts, it was a very tough battle winds. That was nick roberts who spoke to radio 5 live last night describing what he saw in portugal. Youre watching breakfast from bbc news. His findings come after house price data analysed by the bbc and we have shorn in Bradford City centre where the average house price is half what was ten yea rs average house price is half what was ten years ago good morning. Good morning. A few little caveats, actually. It sound like a huge amountand it actually. It sound like a huge amount and it is a huge amount. Colour takes into account Price Movement as inflation is well. In real terms, the average house price, Property Price in bradford. When we zoom Property Price in bradford. When we zoom into the ward here, we are in the city centre here today, could be a city centre apartment, it could be a city centre apartment, it could be a three bed terrace in the apartment. The average of all of those, prices have dropped over 50 in ten years. This has come about because of the data that has been analysed by bbc and the open Data Institute, looking at walls around the country, not just institute, looking at walls around the country, notjust the National Average which we often see headlines of. We take the north east, for example, that is the worst performing area. Over 95 of wards in that area have seen house prices fall. That is a similar picture that we see across the country that does not include london and the south east. Wales as well. Yorkshire, over 90 of wards are seen house prices fall. Bradford and beyond. In wales, 90 have seen prices fall. But then, of course, you go to london and the south east and there are three regions in the country that have seen price rises in the majority of wards and that is london, the south east the east of england. Is maybe not a surprise. How do you play off the two . Lets chat to sirah you have been here all morning to you move from london and you are now in bradford looking for somewhere to purchase. What is the difference from your perspective on the Property Market was to not in london you get less space for the money you pay the house prices are rising and continue to rise. Up here it is hard to determine what is value for money and what is not because of the difference in the prices. You think that everything is much cheaper here and so you are not certain if you are getting value for money. House prices have dropped while i have been looking to houses. Some of the properties i have looked at have been priced at one price and then dropped a couple weeks later. That is recently, that you have seen reductions . Do you find that vendor is willing to sell . Are they happy with the price they get . There are only happy as they get the price they ask for, rather than what people offer. They want to hold onto their property a lot more. That may have something to do with how prices have something to do with how prices have changed over ten years. Thank you very much, sirah. That is a big pa rt you very much, sirah. That is a big part of the national picture. What will people sell their house for and how much did they pay for it back in the day . Lets talk to a few people who walk work in the industry. Good morning again. Paul, you are a local estate agent can you explain to us how it is that the average price in bradford could fall by over 50 in real terms . I think it is difficult to see it averaged across the board. I think it is quite localised. When we go out and see people in the city centre the recovery is still a little behind leave um harrogate and other places. On the outskirts it is starting to pick up again but in the city centre especially we still see it struggling with a lack of First Time Buyers coming through, even investors First Time Buyers coming through, eve n investors now. First time buyers coming through, even investors now. Stamp duty threshold has been reduced but people are still refusing to purchase. There is a knockon effect. What is that effect . You compare and analyse cities around the country. Doesnt have an effect on bradford is a city centre . M the country. Doesnt have an effect on bradford is a city centre . It has a big impact in terms of people who wa nt a big impact in terms of people who want to come and live in certain areas and what that means in terms of other people on the street, how many people are spending money and have jobs. There is a flipside when we look at places like london in particular in the wider south east. House prices continue to run away with himself and is a problem because it will start to price people out of a Job Opportunities in those areas and that is a bad thing. And, just briefly, what are the attitudes of people to prices in the area at this minute . With the yorkshire singh in particular, many people, investors from out of town, london and birmingham in places like that, i looking to purchase in the area at highlighting bradford is still, it is struggling. It has richer neighbours and people know that and i think people take advantage of it as well. It all depends on the city around as well. Thank you to you both. This morning i think you can check online if you would like to come on the bbc website, check your local postcode. People may be doing that this morning to see what is happening in your area because this announcement is not a National Average is trying to zoom down into england and wales to zoom down into england and wales to see what is going on. Those fountains look lovely behind you. We will be back a little bit later. There must be lovely when it gets a bit hot. There is a postcode finder on the website. Even a handy map to find your area of the country and see what has happened to your house prices. It is my favourite time of the day, talking about the red sky. I found it quite spooky. All dark and red. Thank you so much for sending in your pictures. Many people thought it was the end of days. That was trendy on social media. The stunning image of the shard in Central London and sent it in. This is a sareen photograph taken in harpenden. Sally caught a plane flying into the reds by over sta nsted. Plane flying into the reds by over stansted. And it was notjust plane flying into the reds by over stansted. And it was not just the uk who saw this phenomenon. This was taken in the west of france. Is that a seagull . They are different kinds of gulls. Keep your photos coming. Carol can explain, for those who might not have seen the explanation. My might not have seen the explanation. My child at my child was explaining to me about the hearse zaha and explaining to me about the hearse za ha and desert. Explaining to me about the hearse zaha and desert. Saharan. When you see the sky, you think it is wide but it is made up of a spectrum of colour. We see it as white. At one end, we have blue and at the other, red. In between we have green and yellow. Yesterday, what happened was with ex hurricane ophelia drifting north east, coming up from the south, it picked up some higher and dust and debris from the wildfires in spain and portugal and it all went into the atmosphere and travelled north. In doing that, it basically reflected away the blues and the greens, allowing the reds and the greens, allowing the reds and oranges to be the dominant colour. Therefore, it looked as though the sky had gone dark brown, orange, red, depending on where you were. It was only when the wind changed direction, coming from a cleaner source of the atlantic, that it moved away. If it was in the south, it will have moved north until eventually it cleared away altogether. What we have today is still the remnants of ex hurricane ophelia continuing to drift north east towards scandinavia. The strongest winds around it are across north east england and south east scotland. We still have gusty winds and coastal gales around north west england and west wales. If you look at the pressure chart, here is what is left of ex hurricane ophelia moving away. You see that squeeze here in the east . That is where the strongest winds are. Windy start in Northern Ireland and in the irish sea, west parts of wales, at when it d rifts sea, west parts of wales, at when it drifts northwards, the strongest winds will go with it. But then we have a weather front coming our way and that will bring rain. For the next few hours at cross south west scotla nd next few hours at cross south west scotland and south north west england. It is not going to be as windy as the Central Lowlands where we have rain. Showers across Northern Ireland but it will ease through the day. Across north east england in particular, we are looking at gusty winds. Further south, a quieter picture. Lighter winds. Temperatures in the low mid teens. Nowhere near as it was yesterday. 60 miles an hour and at times 70 mph, damaging gusts. Berwick in mind if you are in a Light Vehicle, a high sided vehicles bareback in mind. Also, trees could be uprooted. Showers across parts of scotland, Northern England and at times, Northern Ireland. It will feel cooler today than yesterday, cooler in the south east. Thanks to ex hurricane ophelia, we hit 24 celsius and today were looking at 17. As we had three the evening and overnight, the rain pushes northwards and eastwards and at times it will be heavy. We could see patchy fog form across Northern Ireland and across the far north of scotland. In rural areas, a touch of frost. It will remain fairly mild in the south west. South east of england. Behind it, a bit of cloud. Some showers around but once again, it showed we through. Sunshine. As we had towards the end of the week, more low pressure and it looks like it will affect the south. As it looks it will be windy, it wont be anywhere like it was yesterday. We will look at the more red sky pictures later. Scientists say that 130 million light years ago, in the depths of space, 800 billion, billion miles from earth two stars collided causing a huge shockwave to ripple across the universe. The after effects have just reached earth, and scientists have discovered that these collisions produce gold and platinum. Neutron stars are incredibly dense a teaspoonful would weigh a billion tons and scientists have been able to observe the moment of impact for the very first time. This is what it sounded like. Low humming and pop. If you, like me, were expecting a big bang, no. It was rather disappointing. Andrew le van is a professor of astronomy astrophysics at the university of warwick and his team were among the scientists who made this amazing observation. Talk to us about that sound. What you can learn from it is quite spectacular. What you are hearing is to stars and you are hearing the sound of them going around each other. They are orbiting each other and as they are orbiting, they are getting closer and closer and a meeting of occasional ways. As they get closer together, they get faster and faster and that means the pitch of the sound goes up. Thats why, you here it is starting, it is quite low and their new hero chirp that you get at the end as they collide. You get faster and faster and faster and are high pitch until they hit each other and collide. This happened so many years ago, beyond imagination, in some ways. What happens once they collided . Most of them just merged together into a new star or possibly a black hole which is twice the mass but what happens as well is that some of these material in the neutron stars are thrown into space and heated up to about 1,000,000,000 degrees and it is thrown out towards us at perhaps 300,000 kilometres every few seconds. 30 or 40 kilometres every second. It is in the intense heat that all the heavy elements with the nerve, things like old and platinum, are forged. This is interesting. Lets listen to the sound again. This is to neutrons bounce, the sound of them to neutron stars. The sound of them whizzing around and colliding. Low hum. Hum and chirp. You are saying it is gold and platinum. Gold and platinum we have on earth could have been formed in a similar way . We think now that almost certainly it was formed in the same way. The gold and platinum we have from, not this particular neutron star, but more than 5 billion years ago, before the sun and the solar system were formed, there would have been an emerging neutron star somewhere near us. When you are wearing gold or platinum jewellery, you are Walking Around with a bit of that neutron star. An amazing thought what other significant things have you learned . From an astronomy perspective, its amazing because you can hear it. Astronomers have spent a long time looking at the night sky but now we can hear it as well. Einstein predicted it may happen at some stage, the ability to hear it. When he wrote his general theory of relativity 100 years ago, he was a aware that it meant they would be Gravitational Waves that you would hear that he thought no one would ever detect them that they were so wea k ever detect them that they were so weak it would be impossible. Whats next . I can tell youre excited about it. We would like to know how, and these are in the universe. We have only seen one, of course. So, how often do they happen . And the other types of mergers as well. For example, this is to neutron stars that we might have neutron star colliding with a black hole which would put even more of these heavy elements into space. How big were these ones as far as you know . The neutron stars were less than 15 kilometres across. Quite small them . They are as heavy as the sun but the size of manchester. That is blowing my mind. You said about the teaspoon weighing 4 billion tons. That is the same as taking every single human being on earth, all 7 billion of us and cramming us into the size of a sugar cube. Your statistics are fantastic. You have been looking for this for years. Tell us about the technology. We you surprised when you discovered this . We were hopeful but it was a surprise when it happens because people started thinking of these detections 50 yea rs thinking of these detections 50 years ago. The people that came up with that time ago won the nobel prize a few weeks ago. For bringing that id 50 years ago into the detections we have now. Its technology. Another statistic people like to use if they measure distance very accurately. As Gravitational Waves come through us, we are all squeezed in one direction and stretched in the other by a tiny, tiny amountand stretched in the other by a tiny, tiny amount and to detect these Gravitational Waves is like measuring the distance from here to the nearest star, about four light years away, to the width of a human hair. Amazing. Thank you. So much. The size of manchester and as heavy as the sun. The magic of mass your enthusiasm is fantastic. Right now, we will check up on the news, travel and weather where you are. House prices in large parts of england and wales are lower now than they were 10 years ago, according to Research Carried out by the bbc. The figures show that if you adjust for inflation, average values in Northern Areas have dropped by more than 10 . Phil bodmer has the details. For sale signs are a familiar sign in the north east. Here, average house prices have dropped in almost 95 of Council Wards. Lee purchased his home in 2008 for £112,000. Almost one decade on it is now worth between £80,000 and £85,000. If you could sell the house tomorrow, how much would you lose . £30,000. We could lose more than that. That is just what it would go on the market for. In the north east, average prices in real terms have gone down in 94. 7 of all Council Wards. Yorkshire and the humber saw a drop. It is a similar story in wales, 90 of wards. In london, 99 of wards have seen prices rise in the same period. In part it is about a two speed economy. So the economic catalyst has been much greater in london and the south east of the country and that feeds into population pressure, which is much greater in london and the south and means the lack of House Building comes to the fore, driving prices in a way that simply has not happened in the north of england. Millions of homeowners in yorkshire, wales and the north east may be surprised to discover their property has lost value in real terms over the last ten years. But the data demonstrates what many have long suspected a growing disconnect between the capital, the south east and the rest of the country. Storm ophelia is finishing its journey across the uk this morning, after leaving thousands of people across ireland and wales without power. Lets get the latest from our ireland correspondent chris page in county londonderry. Good morning. What are the conditions like . Things are getting calmer. We are down to just a breeze and light rain, thankfully. It looks like the worst of storm ophelia has passed but a different story yesterday afternoon. We were being buffeted by winds. It was very unpleasant. The focus today will turn onto the clear up operation. In Northern Ireland, schools are getting another day. Some have questioned that, wondering if it is really necessary but officials give the reason that first, getting children to and from school might still be difficult, because roads are hazardous with fallen trees. Electricity poles are down. And schools need to inspect premises to see if there has been damage from the storm. Schools and further education colleges in Northern Ireland will be closed and that is the same in the Irish Republic, which bore the brunt of storm ophelia. Forecasters warned it was likely to be the worst storm to hit the island of ireland in more than a century. Three people were killed as a result of the storm in the Irish Republic. A tree fell on a car and another man died in a chainsaw accident as he tried to remove a fallen tree. A sad 24 hours in the Irish Republic and tens of thousands there without power and restoring electricity could take days, we are told. A dramatic picture. The efforts to strike a deal in the brexit negotiations should accelerate in the months ahead according to a joint statement from theresa may and the president of the european commission, jean claude juncker. Over dinner in brussels they discussed how to break the deadlock ahead of a crucial european summit which takes place later this week. Our Political Correspondent alex forsyth joins us now from westminster. How will it accelerate . This is an important week in negotiations. In a few days, eu leaders will get together in brussels and at the summit officially decide whether there has been enough progress made in the talks to move on to talk about the uks future relationship with the eu and the issue of trade. The uk government really wants to do that, but there has been talk of a stalemate with the Sticking Point being money and how much uk will pay upon leaving the eu. Last nights dinner was to try to get things moving along. There has been no major breakthrough from the detail we have. We had comments about accelerating talks in the coming months but nothing significant. The issue of money is problematic. Both sides are insisting things are moving, but they are moving slowly. An analysis of proposals to redraw the map of parliamentary constituencies across britain suggests the conservatives could have won an overall majority, if the plans had been in place for the election in june. The proposals, being published by the three Boundary Commissions for england, scotland and wales, are designed to even out the numbers of voters in each seat. The recommendations could see senior figures likeJeremy Corbyn and borisjohnson lose their seats. Wildfires in portugal. Thousands of firefighters have tackled fires on sunday. In north west spain three people have died. There has been widespread damage wildfires there, some of which are thought to have been started deliberately. After 33 years the bbc has confirmed its going to drop the night time version of crimewatch. Instead it says it will ncrease the number of episodes it makes of the crimewatch roadshow. You are watching breakfast and we will talk more about the story that a Record Number of children are ringing childline, saying they have had suicidal thoughts. Each day last year, the Charity Offered 62 counselling sessions to children, some as young as ten years old. Well talk to childlines founder Esther Rantzen in a minute but first lets hear from jamie. Hes 19 now, but in his early teens bullying led him to breaking point. I experienced a lot of suicidal feelings linked to bullying. As time went on, Different Things started to crop up. Forming relationships was one of the biggest issues because when you experience bullying for such a long time, it makes it difficult to form relationships. It is difficult to trust people. There is difficult to trust people. There is always the fear, is this person going to bully me . What will happen ifi going to bully me . What will happen if i form a relationship with this person . It is isolating. Esther rantzen is with us now. You have been involved with childline from the start. What the problems children talk about these days . I am afraid, these days, we have had more suicidal children than ever before. 15 up on last year and a steady climb over 30 years. What strikes me as significant, in 1986, when we launched childline, there we re when we launched childline, there were children who felt life was not worth but usually because somebody was doing something to them that made them unhappy, whether it was abuse, bullying. Now there seems to bea abuse, bullying. Now there seems to be a profound unhappiness, depression, anxiety. We are getting three quarters of calls from girls. Some of the papers have written up the story saying the effect of social media on the figures. Is that something you have seen . Yes, yes. When i go around the country talking to councillors, as i will be in salford today, i ask, how do you explain this unhappiness . The first thing they say is social media. For all kinds of reasons. With girls, there is the impression you have to be beautiful and popular and have 900 likes. Everybody else has a fantastic life, why are you a failure . And Cyber Bullying can follow them. Bullying used to stop at the school gates but now it can follow them home, there is no escape from it. Thats childline, if there is any child watching, i would say, please contact childline, because it really helps to talk about it. You can ring is, you can contact us online, and three quarters of contacts online, and three quarters of co nta cts now online, and three quarters of contacts now comes online. Interestingly, being counselled online seems to liberate young people to talk more frankly about the depth of feelings. It isjust sad hearing about that. I imagine pa rents sad hearing about that. I imagine parents listening to that, what can pa rents parents listening to that, what can parents do . I have my own theories. You would expect me to have theories. One of the things i feel is that the Virtual World does not provide the kind of comfort and real friendship. Young people cannot trust it in the way you can trust a friend you know, or yourfamily. Trust it in the way you can trust a friend you know, oryourfamily. I have a think about eating together. I think families who eat together rather than taking a train to the bedroom and getting back onto the screen, it gives you an opportunity to say to a kid who is a bit silent, is something worrying you . And children need more than parents. They say it takes a village to bring up they say it takes a village to bring upa they say it takes a village to bring up a child and sometimes children find it difficult to express sadness to the parents because they think, rightly, the parents will get anxious and hurst also. It is helpful to have someone else to talk to hurt. Helpful to have someone else to talk to hurt. It is said by the government that every child should get the guidance they need and they have invested with a record amount spent last year. They say suicide statistics, it is at the lowest rate in six years, which does not tally with what you are saying this morning. It does not. 26,000 counselling contacts in the last year related to suicide, or suicidal thoughts. I do not think we have enough Mental Health professionals to deal with that number of desperately unhappy children. Although fewer may be taking their lives and that may be because of intervention at the last minute, and we intervene at the last minute if we intervene at the last minute if we think a childs life is at immediate risk, but it does not help with Mental Health issues, the self harm on the increase, eating disorders on the increase. So many Mental Health pressures on young people. I would ask the department of health not to be complacent because i believe there is a crisis in the happiness of children and when you compare british children with children around the world, we score very with children around the world, we score very low. Lets talk about advice you can offer. You talked about getting internet counselling. Is that looking into the future, you say that is helpful. It is. Childline has a message board in which young people help each other, as well as the capacity to take e mailand as well as the capacity to take e mail and real time chat. And we have a phone app. I would say either contact childline, or one of the many other organisations that reach out to young people. The important thing is for parents to recognise that by talking about it, you release pain. You perhaps remember when you were a teenager feeling this gloom, depression, hopelessness. You are never as good as other people. You compare yourself as a kid, and it was your family perhaps that said, this is nonsense, that is not good. As a counsellor, that is hopeless, you cannot say that but as a parent you cannot say that but as a parent you can assure them that the illusion that people are better, more glamorous, the celebrities showing you the way, they are not. Bear in mind that every photograph you see ofa mind that every photograph you see of a celebrity has been retouched. The reality is different than the real you has value and you have people who care about you. Details of organisations offering information and support are available at bbc. Co. Uk actionline all the details you can find there. Heres carol with a look at this mornings weather. There is so much going on. Bottom if we start off by looking at the remnants of ex hurricane ophelia. It has been continuing to drift north east wards and you can see the squeeze on the winds across parts of noention and south east scotland. Anywhere from tayside to the south pennines. This is where we are looking at gusts of wind 60mph to 65mph, at times we will see gusts 75mph. You cant help, but miss this area of cloud coming up from the south. It will bring rain across parts of swention. Although we have the tightest squeeze on its isobars, look it is windy this morning across for example Northern Ireland, and weve got coastal gales just off the coast of north wention and west wales. But as the remnants of this old hurricane move away, what you will find is the winds will slowly start to ease. But for a time this morning, there is the risk of disruption once again particularly south east scotland and north east england. With those kind of gusts they are damaging and you may find some, for example, some ferry crossings cancelled or delayed. The same with flights. So this morning we have got rain across northern scotland. Here too, its windy, but not as windy as it is across the central belt. As we pull further south, towards the south pennines, all this part of north east england again very windy with coastal gales across the north west. South of that again, for the rest of england and all of wales, we are looking at a mostly dry start, with sunshine around. If it is not sun why where you are, it will be bright. Around the south western approaches winds lighter than they were this time yesterday. So we have got the gusts, 55mph to 60mph, locally 70mph and as we go through the course of the day, the wind will slowly ease as ex hurricane ophelia pulls away towards scandinavia. Behind, for Northern England, and Northern Ireland and scotland there will be some showers. Equally there will be sunshine. Some of the showers will be heavy and as we come further south, we have got a dry and sunny slot and then the cloud builds across southern areas, heralding the arrival of this rain coming in across the south west. Through the course of the evening and overnight, that rain will push in a north easterly direction. Again some of it will be heavy. Across Northern Ireland for example, we could see patchy fog forming and across the far north of scotland well here, in rural areas, we are leekly to see a touch of frost. So tomorrow if we pick up that band of rain it continues in the direction of the north and the east heading towards the north sea. A lot of cloud left its inn its wake with showers, but brighter skies with sunshine across Northern Ireland and also northern scotla nd Northern Ireland and also northern scotland in particular. The winds much lighter and rather like today, tomorrow will feel cooler than it did yesterday. Thank you very much indeed, carol. We were listening, but we were slightly distracted. You will see why were talking about puppy farms. Getting a dog can be a very special and rewarding time, but an increasing number of people are being caught out by dishonest puppy dealers. The rspca says 2016 saw the largest number of calls reporting problems with breeders, something labour mp chris evans will mention in Parliament Later when he calls for more robust regulations. Rspca inspector cathy hyde is here with 12 week old rosie. Tom mather, who unwittingly bought two dogs from a puppy farm, joins us from his home. Good morning both. Thank you very much indeed forjoining us. Tom, tell us about your story first. You had a really sad story, didnt you, after you bought puppies. Tell us what you had done . Yes, i bought two puppies which i thought was from a family home with a family dog, it had a litter of puppies. U nfortu nately had a litter of puppies. Unfortunately the puppies died after five days of me having them from par va five days of me having them from par va virus and after i reported it to the rspca, it ournd out it was a puppy the rspca, it ournd out it was a puppy farm and several other people we re puppy farm and several other people were caught out by it. It was really sad. You assumed, did you, that would be the right way to buy a puppy would be the right way to buy a puppy. Tell us why you bought from that sort of place . I just went online peu was looking for a particular breed of dog at the time, it was West Highland terriers and i found some locally and thats what i did. I looked on there, but now in hindsight i would never do that again. I would hindsight i would never do that again. Iwould never advice hindsight i would never do that again. I would never advice anyone to do. Kathy, how big a problem is this . In the last five years the rspca has seen a 132 increase in puppy rspca has seen a 132 increase in puppy trafficking. Looking at rosie now, everybody is thinking a lovely dog and people are drawn in, but they are clever at making it look like they have been bred in the home and they are legitimate breeders and they are clever at doing this, and it makes them a lot of money, but the puppies carry disease and as in our viewers have seen, parva virus does kill. Rosie, there are breeds that people are looking for at moment . Unfortunately the puppy traffickers are good at responding to trends and rosie is your classic, she is a Jack Russell Cross chihuahua and thats almost like a designer breed and they are quick to respond and breed they are quick to respond and breed the puppies and anyone looking at rosie today would want to go out and buy her. But will not know where she has come from and where she has been raised. What are the sign posts you should be looking. Tom is talking about the pit fall he fell into. What are some of the red flags . I suppose the internet is different to when you visit a puppy farm. As we are being distracted by the cute dog . Well, 8396 people of buy through the internet and the puppy traffickers will set up and make a home and make like they have bred in the home, but what you really want to do, you need to do a lot of research. Think about whether you really wa nt research. Think about whether you really want to get a dog, time consuming, lots of money and also ask to see the puppy with its parents or at least its mother. So that you know thats legitimately where it has been bred and it has come from a happy home, paperwork, vet treatment records, things like that. Tom, tell us about your personal experience. Did you manage to get papers or how, you realised when the dogs were ill that something was up . Yes. I was struggling to get the paperwork from them. They said they had it when i picked the dogs up and in all the excitement of picking them up, i didnt take the paperwork with me andi didnt take the paperwork with me and i contacted them afterwards and isaidi and i contacted them afterwards and i said i need to know whatjabs they had so i could take them to have their treatment done so i could take them outside. They werent forthcoming and i took them to the vets myself to get them started off from scratch and the vet was just worried about them from day one of me taking them in. They had three visits to the vets. They were closing weight over the five days i had thesmt sickness and diarrhoea was co nsta nt had thesmt sickness and diarrhoea was constant with them and then like this smell on them which was not nice, but that was down to the parva virus and then on the fifth day of me taking them back in, thats when they did the snap test for parva and confirmed thats what they had got. Tell us about your dog now. You have rescued this dog and it is a happy ending in the end. Go on. Yes there, is archie, archie and george. I have had to put the other dog in the other room because they are playing up. They were rescued from the rspca, i have had them since puppies. So i have had them for 18 months now and i have adopted them. Yeah, theyre brilliant. Solicitor archie is a Jack Russell Cross with a border terrier. And then george is crossed with a poodle. You heard about the deseener dogs, and thats what they go for. Im glad it has worked out for you. It is a devastating lesson. Can i have a cuddle with rosie . She loves me, dan. I think she has been looking longing at me. There you go, youre home thats a lesson for everyone to watch out and do your research . It is. Go back more than once. You wa nt it is. Go back more than once. You want to see the same puppy more than once because the turn over with the puppy once because the turn over with the puppy traffickers with once. If you returned again im sure you wouldnt see that same puppy. We want to talk about rescue dogs and thats what tom did. Thats where you can get animals where they have had the vaccinations . Go to a rescue organisation first of all. We have got kennels full of dogs and puppies looking for homes and we will give you a full history and they will have all the relevant treatments, vaccinations and things like that. Rosie was looking for a home. She has found a home she has one. We will do investigating. It is £350 for a dog like rosie is that right . With the deseener breeds it is anywhere between £350 and £1500. Thats why people are getting involved in it . For offences under the Animal Welfare act, it is a maximum of six months in prison. There was a puppy Trafficking Group within the manchester area that we estimate has made £2 million out of puppy estimate has made £2 million out of puppy trafficking and the west midlands, london, they are hotspots and it will increase up towards christmas. Sol and it will increase up towards christmas. So i would say to people if you are thinking about getting a puppy or if you are thinking about getting a puppy or dog for christmas, go to a rescue centre or do your research. And they will know about the temperament of the dog. Yes. She is just adorable. Thank you very much for bringing her. He will give her back, i promise. Or we will have a problem. Now, the news, travel and weather where you are. Good morning, storm ophelia gave destruction and damage yesterday. Thankfully, today, things should improve. The storm is still with us. Moving its way across the north of scotland. Much weaker than it was yesterday. Despite that this morning, we have strong winds. The isobars are still close together across north east scotland and north east england but it is clearing into the north sea and things should improve. Watch out for gusts up to 70 mph in north east england, north east scotland. Largely dry and bright in Northern Ireland. Most of england and wales, sunny spells, but rain spreading into the south. Noticeably fresh air compared to yesterday when we got up to 23, 20 4 degrees. Today, lower than that. Tonight, this area of rain will move northwards and eastwards. Wet weather overnight tonight here. Elsewhere, clear skies and lighter winds and it could turn cold across parts of scotland with temperatures potentially down to four. Wednesday, a front brings outbreaks of rain in southern areas and the best of the sunshine across the north and west of scotla nd sunshine across the north and west of scotland and into Northern Ireland before cloud thickens. Some rain moving in later. Thursday, u nsettled rain moving in later. Thursday, unsettled again. Outbreaks of rain across eastern areas. A window of drier weather before the next system moves in from the west. Between, a little bit of sunshine. More details on the website. Goodbye.
