And on the day storm 0rphelia hits the uk, 30 years ago the country was reeling from the impact of the great storm of 1987. Good evening and welcome to bbc news. Three people have died as the worst storm for 50 years hits ireland, parts of the uk are affected too. Storm 0phelia has brought gusts of nearly a hundred miles an hour, damage to buildings and there are flood warnings in place along much of the west coastline of britain. The centre of the storm hit the south coast of ireland late this morning and moved up the country with the west coast bearing the brunt. Its now over the north coast heading to scotland where it will gradually weaken before finally passing the uk tomorrow afternoon. 360,000 homes and businesses have lost power. In ireland, around 170 flights have been cancelled with flights and ferries also called off in parts of scotland. From the atlantic 0phelia arrived in force. No longer a hurricane, but a storm still determined to show her power. That was seen on irelands south and west coasts, but red Wind Warnings were in place across the country. Trampolines were no match for the weather. And this roof was torn from a school in county cork on a day declared by the Irish Government to be one of a national emergency. This is a national red alert. It applies to all cities, all counties and all areas. Also bear in mind, that even after the storm has passed, there will still be dangers. There will be trees on the ground and power lines down. Galway was in the direct path. Here many listened to appeals to stay inside. In the windows of shop after shop there were signs saying they would be staying closed because of the storm. Flood gates were put on the doors of businesses and the streets cleared of potentially dangerous debris. But in galway bay, even with 0phelia approaching, some ignored the warnings to go swimming. Even last night, you had a meeting at city council with the army, the civil defence, fire brigade, both councils and they were putting together a plan in place for it. Youll still have an idiot in the water swimming besides the black rock tower. Thats the type of idiot that will put somebodys life at risk and wasting the resources of the Emergency Services that should be somewhere else at the same time. Lives have been lost as a result of fallen trees. Hundreds of thousands of homes have been left without electricity because of the damage caused by the high winds. With this number of customers out its unprecedented. Its going to be a number of days before people have their power back. About 5 of customers it will be up to ten days before they have their power back. We are keeping a little bit of a distance. We are concerned for our own safety here. But even at this point, you can really feel the sheer power of 0phelia. Its quite impressive. But it gives you a sense why the authorities have been so concerned about these winds. They are going to cause a lot of damage and indeed destruction. Much has been left in need of repair in 0phelias wake. 0nly so much can be done to protect houses, cars, even stadiums, despite the days of warnings. But some did ignore the appeals for them to stay inside their homes in order to see and experience this storm for themselves. Its spectacular. Are you not mad being out in it . I love big weather. Watching big seas, ijust love it. With schools and colleges closed, roads blocked off and much public transport cancelled, people have been protected from this storm. But 0phelia has tested ireland. 0ur correspondent ben ando is in newry in country down in Northern Ireland. Just bring us up to date. It doesnt look too bad at the moment. No, it doesnt. The sense here certainly in Northern Ireland, and in the south east where we are, is that the west has now passed. It doesnt seem to have been the case that. U nfortu nately we have to have been the case that. Unfortunately we have lost ben, im not sure whether it was the weather that cut the line. 0ur weather presenter, ben rich is here with the latest on the storm. We heard some of the details, but just talk is through the part of this storm. We have been watching it for several days, regular viewers will know. It started life as a hurricane, which came a long way used in the atlantic, very unusual to see and hurricane despite used in the atlantic. I can show you a satellite picture exactly what it did and the journey took. You can see, when we are able to show it, that it weakened a little bit, it was not a harry kane when it arrived on our shores. It was a deep area of low pressure that moved initially in through the republic of ireland it was not a hurricane. This storm brought strong gusts, close to 100 mph in the most exposed spots in the republic of ireland. The strongest wind gusts in the uk had been in west wales, 90 miles an hour there. We can now see at the graphics are finally arrived. Just a summary of those wind gusts i was telling you about. You can see plenty of other places not far behind. The big question is what happens next . There are still am but be prepared warnings in force across Northern Ireland, north west wales, the isle of man, south west scotland. 80 mph wind gusts are still possible this evening. But they look like they are beginning to ease and will continue to do so. The trouble is not com pletely to do so. The trouble is not completely over, because across scotla nd completely over, because across scotland in the far north of england, into tomorrow mornings rush hour, there will be gusty conditions. Particularly to the east of high ground, the pennines, and funnelling through the central belt of scotland, the commute could be problematic. This storm is not com pletely problematic. This storm is not completely done yet. Some extraordinary weather conditions that we have been witnessing over the last 2a hours. Even away from the last 2a hours. Even away from the eye of the storm as we saw it there, we have seen this extraordinary red skies and red sun. Editors all people have been talking about on social media today. The scenes of red skies and red sunlight, a lot of it is coming to work this afternoon, we found it utterly extraordinary. That is tied up utterly extraordinary. That is tied up actually with the ex hurricane, what the storm has done has brought southerly winds from the sahara, picking up saharan dust. The other thing we have, in the headlines, the wildfires burning in portugal, a lot of smoke from those, it is also being brought in our direction. So a combination of saharan dust and the particulates in the air from the wildfires, scatters the blue end of the light spectrum, if you know about physics, and we see more of the red end of the light spectrum. Even away from the eye of the storm, 0phelia has had quite an impact, it is been an extraordinary day. Thank you for bringing that up to date. 0n the line now is a counsellor in the city of cork. Keirin, tell us what has been happening where you are. You head on your news report, 0phelia has tested us actually as well. We have had extraordinary conditions. Gusts outside cork harbour were around 150 kilometres per hour. From Early Morning it has been very eerie this morning, the calm before the storm. All schools we re calm before the storm. All schools were shut and all the businesses in town were closed. All that was left we re town were closed. All that was left were radio stations communicating what was going on. We are still actually suffering now from the tail end. But between 11 00am and 2 00pm todayit end. But between 11 00am and 2 00pm today it was fairly horrific. 100 trees were felled, the roof of our soccer stadium was taken away. The roof of the school hall was taken away. 0ur lambs were down, and thousands of people are without electricity in county court this evening. It is still fairly horrific and we will know more tomorrow morning when the winds die down. The tail end is still there. It is in north west ireland and moving towards scotland. It sounds like there has been quite a bit of damage. It is been a horrific day, 100 trees down and blocked our main road. It is only been in the last hour that our City Council Staff have been clearing it away. People will be working into the night to clear some of the main roads. There has been a lot of structural damage to buildings and houses. Anyone on high ground, there were routes taken off. The city s great together, at getting together, we have had a long day, but no one was killed in the city. Unfortunately there were three People Killed in the republic so three People Killed in the republic so far, but fortunately no one in cork. We had structural damage, but it is terrible to hear about the three people were killed. What about tomorrow . Will the schools remained closed given the structural damage . The department for education in dublin has ordered the continued closure of schools tomorrow. It was a great call that our department made yesterday not to send thousands of pa rents made yesterday not to send thousands of parents and children out into the eeriness of that, and collecting kids in the afternoon. I spent the day at home, ive been lucky so far, my electricity actually hasnt gone. I have been listening to local news all day listening to peoples stories. People have rallied together, that is what is great about a small city like cork. I have seen about a small city like cork. I have seen stories on social media about people helping each other, and also just loads of pictures of damage and the trees down. Some of our energies have been destroyed. 0n the trees down. Some of our energies have been destroyed. On one stretch of road alone in cork there were 17 trees felled one after another, and these trees are 60 or 70 years old. We have had horrific wind gusts, up to 156 commenters now, 135 or 140 mph. Kilometres. At this moment of time we have members of our city council out on the streets to make sure roads are cleared and the power and electricity in particular are not active on the ground. Thank you very much for explaining what is going on there. We can now go back to ben, in county down in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately we lost the line earlier, that does bring this up line earlier, that does bring this up to date. I think the sense certainly in the south of Northern Ireland is that the worst has passed. The winds now im not particularly strong at all. Yes, there has been damage, there have been dozens of trees brought down and 18,000 homes without power. Of course, those people will be wondering when they can be reconnected to the network. But certainly, where we were earlier on the coast, there, at the height of it, the winds were getting up to 60 01 it, the winds were getting up to 60 or 70 it, the winds were getting up to 60 or70 mph around it, the winds were getting up to 60 or 70 mph around five oclock this afternoon. Although there were lots of street lamps, rocking from side to side, signs, telegraph wires vibrating, they didnt seem to be any serious damage done. And so far that seems to be decent across Northern Ireland at least that the worst has passed. Tropical storm of the alia, x hurricane 0phelia, there will still be part of the two by high winds, that certainly where we are, people are going to start to breathe a sigh of relief. Thanks for the latest from Northern Ireland. Theresa may has called what she calls constructive talks in brussels in an attempt to break the deadlock. Michel barnier and Jean Claude Juncker. We can cross over now and get political reaction. Thank you for joining get political reaction. Thank you forjoining us. Tell us more about what we are hearing from these talks tonight. We have just received a joint Statement Released by theresa may and Jean Claude Juncker about this dinner, which was in the eyes of some, hastily arranged, although downing street insisted that it had beenin downing street insisted that it had been in the diary for some time. The language is interesting coming out from brussels about this dinner. Saying that they have agreed that effo rts saying that they have agreed that efforts on the brexit negotiations should accelerate over the months to come. A recognition perhaps the talks have been stalling, but more optimistic language about pushing on and making progress. The description of the dinner, they described as a constructive and friendly atmosphere. Perhaps in contrast to the last dinner that took place between the two of them earlier in the year that led to greetings and recriminations. A positive tone coming from brussels tonight, but no detail on what was discussed, no movement on money. That has been a Sticking Point that has been holding up Sticking Point that has been holding up talks. Downing street has been clear that theresa may was going into this dinner that comes ahead of the eu summit later in the week where the eu 27 will meet to decide if sufficient progress has been made on the brexit talks so far, in order to move onto the next stage. Downing street has said that the florence speech has formed the basis of how theresa may is going into this dinner tonight and the Council Meeting on thursday and friday. So we havent expect in any news to be announced, that theresa may has certainly hoped that this pledge to accelerate the talks will mean that by december, when we now expect progress to me made, then the green light will be given by brussels to move those talks on to trade once sufficient progress has been made on the so called divorce matters. Sufficient progress has been made on the socalled divorce matters. At least some positive signs from tonight s dinner, but that is the key question, because there has been this argument about when and what needs to be done before those talks can move on to talking about the final deal. Any indications on to whether we could actually see a breakthrough there . It is for brussels to decide whether sufficient progress is the term used, has been made on these three issues, the rights of eu citizens, the Northern Ireland border and the divorce bill. Whether progress has been made in order to kick start this trade talks. Now, theresa may had been hoping that this meeting later in the week of the eu council, that would be the time when Michel Barnier, the eu chief negotiator, would recommend that those talks then move on to talking about trade. Now, when we had the latest rounds of brexit talks last week, Michel Barnier was clear, he said i cannot recommend this. All the expectations are that now, at this meeting later this week, there will be no movement on to trade, but with this new language, perhaps with this new renewed push, with further rounds of talks then originally been scheduled, that by december when the next meeting happens with the eu 27, then the green light and go ahead will be given for those talks to move will be given for those talks to m ove o nto will be given for those talks to move onto the next age. Thank you. The headlines. The chief executive of the Financial Authority saying that some young people are having to borrow money for basic living costs. Figures suggest that almost a third of young people are worried about how they will pay back their loans and credit cards. Our personal finance correspondent, Simon Gompertz reports. On the face of it, theres money in scarborough. From the arcades, the restaurants. And hotels. But scratch the surface and you see a different story. What do you want to do after school . There is so much debt among the young that people like kelly, a single mother, that increasingly they are choosing to go legally insolvent to escape creditors. Have a lovely day, love you loads. See you later this is the debt relief order i have done. Kellys debt relief order is a slimline version of bankruptcy. This is jacomo, a catalogue that i had out. This is provident. By paying £90, she gets out of her £4000 debt. But it was you who was doing the borrowing, did you have to do that . I needed to because on income support, low income, your little lad is growing up and needs clothes and i need clothes. Kelly is now producing video blogs to earn something from the adverts and applying for temporary work to start again. But a fresh start is not easy here, you are contending with Seasonal Work and the lowest average wage in the country. Even for the youngest, debt is taking over. How much is going out and what is coming in . Many getting help at this scarborough hostel are just 20. My debt with argos was over £200 and for my mobile £300. You are worried in case bailiffs come take your stuff. You dont know when they are going to come. Or you get a letter through the post, that makes me worry and go down more. Do you see the worry that it causes . Yes, we see worry every day in young people. One of the first things we do is look at exactly what debt they have got and how we can address and sort it out, paying it back in instalments. Often when they come here they are at breaking point. What makes scarborough the sort of place where more young people are in debt and going insolvent is a concentration of the problems besetting the young across the country. Work is getting more casual, there is low pay, problems with benefits, rents and no savings to fall back on. The signs from here is that the debt problem is getting worse, young people and young families starting out in life are already behind. Simon gompertz, bbc news. New Research Shows that the wi fi connections of businesses and homes around the world are at risk. The glitch, known as krack, concerns an authentication system which is widely used to secure wireless connections. Experts said it could leave the majority of connections at risk until they are patched. How worried should you be and what should you do to get around the problem . We can speak now to professor alan woodward, a Technology Expert from the university of surrey. Hejoins me via skype from wiltshire. Just explain in simple terms, what this problem is. Whenever you connect, first of all, to a wi fi route from your laptop, there is a conversation that goes on which is where you agree what the secret key is going to be to encrypt the data, to scramble the data, and research has found there is a step in that conversation that you can take over and thereby hijack the conversation, it is to do with repeating something which should never be repeated and in encryption when you repeat something it is really very bad. It wea ke ns something it is really very bad. It weakens it terribly and allows you to break it. So this is a potential risk, rather than a specific glitch oran risk, rather than a specific glitch or an attempt to hack by a foreign power or some individual. It is something which seems to affect the vast majority of wi fi devices, the problem, it is no particular offender, they have done the right thing, followed the standing thing, but it is the standard itself that seems to be flawed. It has been around for 15 years, so why we havent spotted it, we dont know, but this research did and the vendors have been scrambling to update, so this is something we are all vulnerable to, like what im speaking to you over now, but this isa speaking to you over now, but this is a very targeted attack and some would have to, for you specifically. It is not a massive virus someone would have two target you specifically. We are aware of the danger of being hacked, of course. What chidgey do if you are worried about this glitch . Should you do. I would stress that people find out what laptop they have got, any device that is wi fi enabled, and that to see if the vendor has issued a Software Update and then apply it, and if you are worried, if you think someone and if you are worried, if you think someone might be listening in, use a virtual private network, there are Service Providers out there, for example, if you go to a coffee shop and use wi fi, i hope you would not use it without further protection like a use it without further protection likea vpn. Use it without further protection like a vpn. If you are worried someone like a vpn. If you are worried someone might be using this, then use a vpn. Thanks forjoining us. Before the weather forecast, we can have a look at the images of the sky and son turning red over many parts of scotland. Hello. This is bbc news. The headlines three people have died and thousands have been left without power as storm ophelia hit the republic of ireland an amber warning is in place for Northern Ireland, wales, and south west scotland. Theresa may says her dinner discussions with eu leaders tonight have been constructive, and they agreed brexit negotiations should be accelerated. Thousands of civilians have fled the iraqi city of kirkuk, after the iraqi army seized control from Kurdish Forces. And a collision of two dead stars, which took place millions of years ago has been watched for the first time by a team of scientists. As weve been hearing, three people have been killed in ireland, as hurricane ophelia hits the british isles. Tens of thousands of homes are now without power in the republic, Northern Ireland and wales. The storm is now moving north east into scotland. Our first report is from chris page, whos in downhill, County Londonderry in Northern Ireland. This is a beach famous for being the place where many battle scenes from the game of thrones is filmed, but today the battle is against the elements, and people are talking about nothing else. The wind is whipping sand off the sea and stinging in yourface, the whipping sand off the sea and stinging in your face, the waves are battering be sure and right across Northern Ireland, driving uptake, the shutters were down and many businesses were closed, many hospital outpatient appointment were cancelled. Lots of people not coming into work at all, schools have been closed all day here and in the irish republic, but they also wont open tomorrow, so republic, but they also wont open tomorrow, so once more republic, but they also wont open tomorrow, so once more tomorrow schoolchildren will have a day off school. It has had serious consequences, three deaths because of ophelia, there were trees which fell on cars in County Waterford and dundalk, and a man died in a chainsaw accident as he was trying to re m ove chainsaw accident as he was trying to remove a tree. The news no one wa nted to remove a tree. The news no one wanted to hear but unfortunately storm ophelia has claimed lives. Thousands of homes have been without power across wales. Roads and Railway Lines have been closed because of flooding and schools were forced to close early to keep pupils safe. A met Office Amber Warning has been issued for parts of north and west wales until midnight, with potential danger to life. Matthew richards has the details. The pembrokshire coast felt the effect of ophelia this afternoon with waves causing flooding on the a487 at newgale and crashing against the defences. All of angleseys schools were closed with parents and guardians sent Text Messages to collect children at lunchtime. I am really glad, i wanted to come and get them anyway knowing it was going to be windy. I am quite glad we got the text message, i would rather they were at home and safe. It was a surprise, i didnt think it was going to be that severe, but obviously it is this afternoon. Id rather take them home than try and get home later when its all windy and bad, really, things flying about everywhere. Pembrokeshire closed all of its schools early and many in gwynedd also sent children home. Strong winds tore part of the roof from these flats. Transport has been disrupted. With the britannia bridge closed over the menai strait this afternoon drivers had to use the only other crossing between the mainland and the island. Ferry Services Using the irish sea via holyhead and pembroke were cancelled and other vessels sheltered from the storm off the anglesey coast, under the watchful eye of the coastguard and rnli. It is betterfor them to be inside, sheltering from the rough weather we are currently getting. If they were to get into trouble, it would be us going out there, it is better for them to be here in the Shallow Water than it is in the deep. Flights to and from anglesey were suspended and Cardiff Airport saw some cancellations. A handful of aircraft have been diverted after a burning smell was reported this charter flight from bristol forced to make an Emergency Landing at hawarden airport. The storms atmospheric conditions perhaps mistaken for mechanical issues, but air Traffic Controllers werent taking any chances. As winds lashed the coastline, engineers have spent the day working to restore power to thousands of properties with carmarthenshire and ceredigion among the worst hit. Storm ophelia also brought strong winds and high seas to parts of the south west of england today. A gust of 67 Miles Per Hour was recorded on the isles of scilly this morning. Compared to other parts of the uk and ireland, the region escaped the worst of the effects, but the storm caused disruption on roads, rail and in the air. David george has spent the day in west cornwall. The sting in storm ophelias tail has laid siege to cornwalls south coast. This is a harbour entrance. Huge waves crashing against the cliffs. Waves were breaking over penzance harbour wall, and esplanade, long before high tide. In the town, this street was closed after tiles blew off a shop roof. Some trees were brought down by 50 mph winds. One disrupted services on the Main Railway Line to st austell. At lands end, the wind flies out poker straight, the wind here too strong for the relatively small aircraft which fly to the isles of scilly. There are winds up to 80 mph forecast, and our aircraft are a lot smaller than some of the bigger aircraft people are used to and they get more affected by the strength of wind. And the ferry to isles of scilly is no alternative, it was safely tied up in penzance, todays trip cancelled. Fishing boats take refuge down the coast in newlyn harbour, and other Ferry Services are suspended. But who would want to be out there, in this . Here at lands end, we are on the closest point of uk mainland to the ex hurricane, now storm ophelia, and it feels like it as well. This wind is gusting well over 50 mph. The storm has bought hundreds out to see the power of the sea, and feel the power of the wind. Its glorious, absolutely glorious. Human nature loves drama. And these photographers want a picture of it, that one spectacular picture. Just waiting for the tide to come up so we can see the sea crashing over the top of it, hopefully, a nice place to be. I can think of worse places to sit and watch. Back in porthleven, the Coast Guard Team is deployed to help keep the storm watchers safe. At least 31 people have died in wildfires in northern and central portugal. The Civil Protection agency says there are 50 fires still raging, fanned by the strong winds of hurricane ophelia passing the iberian coast. A state of public emergency has been declared. An academic at Birmingham University said to be among britains most prolific paedophiles has pleaded guilty to blackmailing adults and Children Online into carrying out degrading sexual acts. Matthew falder, 28 years old and a cambridge graduate, admitted more than a hundred offences, as our midlands correspondent, sima kotecha, explained. Thousands of civilians have fled the iraqi city of kirkuk, after the iraqi army seized control from Kurdish Forces. An update on the market numbers for you heres how londons and frankfurt ended the day. And in the the United States this is how the dow and the nasdaq are getting on. Thousands of civilians are fleeing the iraqi city of kirkuk, after the iraqi army seized control of the city from Kurdish Forces. Kurdish fighters or peshmerga have been in control of the city since 2014, when iraqi forces fled in the face of an advance by so called islamic state. It lies in a region claimed by both the kurds and the Iraqi Government and is outside the autonomous kurdish region in the north of iraq. Last month kurds there and in kirkuk voted overwhelmingly for independence, provoking the Iraqi Government to send in the troops. Our middle east correspondent orla guerin and cameraman duncan stone have this report from kirkuk. Pledging to defend kirkuk. This morning, still defiant. A handful of peshmerga fighters with a few guns and grenades. And locals with whatever came to hand. We lost 2,000 men fighting is, he says. Were not afraid of the iraqi prime minister. But further on, fear had emptied the streets. Remnants of unity on display with kurdish and iraqi flags. But this checkpoint now a frontline. No one seems sure how to defend it. Locals said iraqi forces were closing in. Shia militia units, linked to the government, out of sight behind these buildings. Then this. Gunfire we had to scramble for cover. Weve suddenly had to pull back. There was a sustained outburst of gunfire at the position up ahead. We cant be sure where it came from, but it seemed to be coming from ahead of us, from positions we were told there were Iraqi Military forces. In the last few seconds, weve heard gunfire also up ahead. As kirkuk slipped out of kurdish hands, the exodus began. Desperate civilians heading north towards the autonomous kurdish region. It felt like the city was emptying before our eyes. Some asking why no one was helping them, after they helped the world to fight is. The world is just silent when it comes to the kurds. Its just not fair. Its not fair. By evening, an iraqi victory parade in the centre of kirkuk. Baghdad said the takeover was largely unopposed. Some locals in this ethnically mixed city welcoming the troops. But a fractured country is now divided anew. Now, take a look at this. A recreation of the moment two neutron stars collided sending ripples, called Gravitational Waves, through the fabric of the universe. It happened 130 million years ago but has onlyjust been seen and heard by scientists. Its the type of collision shown to be responsible for creating gold and platinum in the universe. As you might expect, this report from our science correspondent pallab ghosh contains flashing images. Its the longest Straight Line in the world. A 2. 5 mile pipe containing a laser that can detect powerful explosions in space. Inside, a technician fine tunes the instrument. It has made a discovery that has shaken the scientific world. Two stars colliding in a galaxy far, far away. Around 800 billion billion miles from earth. The two stars got closer and closer until they merged, resulting in a huge shock wave that rippled across the universe. The massive explosion led to the production of rare elements, such as gold and platinum. Neutron stars are what is left over when giant suns die and collapse in on themselves. They are so densely packed that a teaspoon would weigh one billion tonnes. And here is the actual sound of the collision. Low humming and pop they then become part of planets when they form, including here on earth. The explosion was picked up in the control room here. It took place 130 million years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth. It is only now that the light and Gravitational Waves have reached us. Ooh, it was. We have been waiting for this for so long. We dont know if we were lucky and this happened to be an event that happened close, relatively close, to us. But its very rare. Or, perhaps there are many more neutron stars than we thought. We dont know yet, but we will know. Within seconds, telescopes all over the world were pointed at the colliding stars. This is what they saw. The collision created distortions, stretching and squeezing space. These are known as Gravitational Waves. A new observational window on the universe typically leads to surprises that cannot yet be foreseen. We are still rubbing our eyes, or our ears, as we have just woken up to the sound of Gravitational Waves. Researchers say that there are likely to be many more discoveries using Gravitational Waves. Of objects in the universe that we have not yet imagined. Pallab ghosh, bbc news, livingston, louisiana. The firm behind a multi billion pound train has apologised after passengers on board the very First Service on the Great Western line faced delays, and water pouring from the air conditioning. The hitachi trains started running today on the line from bristol to london. Scott ellis was on board. Out go the old 125s. In come the new hitachi 800s. Loosely based on the japenese bullet train, only this one back fired. A broken air con putting the dampeners on launch day. The water went all over my laptop. What do you think so far, then . Pretty terrible seats had to be cordoned off. The train arrived late into london. But most passengers like the new intercity express trains. I think its great. It smells like a new car, doesnt it . Theres plenty of room. Its not too posh. Its a little bit austere, which i think is probably right for the times. Ive been sitting on here for ten minutes, very comfortable, but it was 20 minutes late. The wi fis good, the system is good, train is lovely. Theres definitely more space and if you get a seat, its nicer, but i would not say there are more seats on the train today. Its definitely busy. There is plenty to admire. Each new mainline train has 652 seats, thats a 24 increase. Theres 4cm more legroom. And theyll cut the bristol to londonjourney by 17 minutes. But with electrification of the main line delayed, the new trains are having to run on diesel engines. Its hoped the overhead wires will reach bristol parkway by the end of next year. But no promises today from the secretary of state. Im not giving guarantees, because i have learned from the project on the Great Western so far that there have been hurdles and hitches on the way. What i do know is we have smart new electric trains starting in bristol today. More seats are despertaley needed. Passenger growth on the gwr is rising by 5 a year. But it all comes at a cost. The 57 new trains and electrification are costing the government £8 billion. Tonight, hitachi told us that the train that made its debut from bristol early this morning is out of service until all problems are rectified. Storm 0rphelia is causing damage and destruction to parts of the uk today, but 30 years ago the country was reeling from the impact of the great storm of 1987. 18 people died as winds reached more than 100 miles an hour. Scotney castle in kent was particularly badly damaged, and our correspondent robert hall has been to find out how its recovered. News archive winds raging at 110 mph lifted trailers off the ground. Trees started falling in front of us and behind us. At one stage, we just had to stop suddenly because a tree had fallen right in front of us. Part of the reason that so many were caught on the hop could be found in a now infamous forecast the previous day. Apparently a woman rang the bbc and said she had heard there was a hurricane on the way. Well, if you are watching dont worry, there isnt. The most lasting effect was the devastation of ancient woodland. Emmetts garden near sevenoaks lost 95 of its trees to the gale. Some were more than 300 years old. We lost our electricity for nine days. Our telephone for five days. Our water supply for four days. Caught up in the storm, nature expert Matthew Oates remembers a change of emphasis during years of recovery. The managers were under terrific pressure from a lot of local people, to clear up and replant. Then we found that actually, if you left the woods to themselves, they would regenerate naturally. Not necessarily with like for like, but nonetheless you would get woodland back very quickly. Thats what happened. A lot has changed over the last three decades. We now have the technology to predict and prepare, as we have seen in the case of ophelia. But perhaps the biggest lesson we learned from the great storm was the sheer power of nature to recover from disaster. Robert hall, bbc news, at scotney castle, kent. Now the very latest weather forecast. Plenty going on with the weather forecast, and today many have felt the effects of the former hurricane ophelia, and for some it was a case of slightly serious guys, they turned red in places, banks do a mixture of saharan dust and smoke from wildfires in portugal being drawn up ahead of our storm thanks to. The republic of ireland has the strongest winds, close to 100 mph. Some rain in the far south west, as well, in between a zone of brighter weather and the temperatures are down on where they we re temperatures are down on where they were today. In the middle of the week, the weather charts look different, the isobars widely spaced and that shows the winds will be much lighter. A band of rain travelling erratically but either side they will be at least some brightness, the winds freshening up again. So, to sum it up, forthis week, it has been a stormy start for some, and the middle of the week looks significantly quieter, but thatis looks significantly quieter, but that is not the end of the story, they will be more wind and rain to come as we head towards the end of the week.
