tonight for the first time since the suicide bombing that killed 22 people. it is time now to cross to the bbc sports centre for sports day. . hello and welcome to sportsday with me 0lly foster and jessica creighton hello there, these are our headlines this evening. a magnificent seven from anderson helps england win the series against the west indies. it's high—fives for manchester city, they are top of the premier league for now after thrashing 10 man liverpool. and froome is on top in spain and will complete a rare grand tour double tomorrow. good evening, we'll have a close look at all the premier league results later in the programme, but england's test team have signed off for the summer by winning the series against the west indies. they finished off the tourists inside three days at lord's. james anderson was england's man of the series, he took his 500th test wicket yesterday and a career best 7—42 left england needing to chase a very meagre 107 in theirfinal innings, which they did with some ease. let's cross to lord's now and speak to our sports correspondentjoe wilson. joe, it's been a rainy few days, butjames anderson really shone through for england again. very well put. i am standing here reflecting, this has been the summer of the floodlights, remember edgbaston, this almost seemed like another floodlit test match because they have been on so often, a glimpse of what it would be like if we kept on playing test matches through the autumn. in english conditions there has never been any body nearly as good as james anderson and the day he was as enthusiastic as ever to keep playing for england he gets those career—best figures. let's show you now some of the day's action. by now, it's almost automatic. another morning, he's off again. james anderson's first over of the day. first wicket of the day, roston chase gone. this cork flew before 11:30am. it was not the last. anderson struck again before lunch. jermaine blackwood out and the match accelerated. but hope bats on the different level. he went past 50, as west indies tried to build a meaningful lead. hope gone for 62. and anderson ended with seven wickets in the innings. west indies were all out for 177. job done. well, hisjob done. england still had to score 107 to win. a precious opportunity for tom westley to impress in the middle. and for henry blofeld in the commentary box. and that, ladies and gentlemen, is the end of it. you say you will miss me, i tell you what, i will miss you all something dreadful. at the end of his last test match special stint, an audience beyond even the radio acknowledged his career. winning runs came from mark stoneman, another aspiring batsman. the winter ashes may well expose any england weaknesses, butjoe root has already won his first two series as england captain, and many of his predecessors had to wait a long time to do that. lovely to see him bow out was that england when ann bingen go into the ashes on the back of a win but how battle hardened will they be? it was not quite as one—sided as many feared but they could have done with slightly stiffer opposition? let's think back to the summer as a whole and we cannot forget the series against a sponsored e dean we re series against a sponsored e dean were england bounced back to win that series —— a strong south african team. we were surprised and impressed by how the west indies performed in headingley. joe good after that game and admitted he got something wrong but he was attacking an aggressive and he will take confidence. i saw him on his own half an hour ago, walking across the outfield and i think he can finish this series and this summer with something of a warm glow. a fantastic week, the lads at the back end showed great composure. to get across the line as they did and played with the great temple. a great sign leading into an exciting winter. what can we expect from england in the one—day series? what can we expect from england in the one-day series? i think they would in good shape. i said tojoe wrote before this test match it would be better to have a rest and prepare for the ashes. dealing with the west indies with some of the big stars coming back in will be a good challenge but the other big issue is how will we survive in the weather because playing later on in september, that will be a challenge for the spectators. but inevitably, thoughts will go ahead to the ashes, and still a lot of gaps in that side to fill. many thanks, joe. england's cricketer is winning that test series against the west indies. we've had six results so far in the premier league, all of them wins but the biggest of the day came in the lunchtime kick—off at the etihad stadium. manchester city thrashed 10 man liverpool 5—0. it was their best result against liverpool for 80 years and jurgen klopp‘s worst result since hejoined the club. adam wild was watching the match. the season may only be a few weeks old, but already a match with plenty of promise. two teams quick to catch the eye, so far attractive and entertaining. that was the promise. the reality was a little more complex. liverpool beginning the brighter, but it was city who got things started. given an opportunity, few are as reliable as sergio aguero. that was important but it is what happened next that made all the difference. liverpool forced to chase things. they did so with rather too much gusto. sadio mane shown a red card for this challenge, wreckless, and ultimately damaging. city unforgiving. with an extra man, one goal became two before half—time, gabrieljesus headed his first. his second after the break was little more than a gift. the only real mystery left was just how many were coming. leroy sane provided the answers. this made it four. before he and city finished with the best of the lot. liverpool's frailties ruthlessly exposed, manchester city living up to their promise. adam wild, bbc news. let's get more on that map and the rest of the premier league action. it is worth dwelling on that match because it was a whopping result for manchester city, we thought it would be much tighter and looking at the reaction of the managers at full—time tells you quite a bit. i wonder if he thinks he got away with one because he has a dreadful record against the big clubs, three out of 16 no but it was a real turning point. we saw the red card, controversial? not for me, a definite red card. that is the debate, whether or not it should have been a sending off. there was no intent but if your studs are high at head height that is dangerous. butjurgen klopp said it would be too dangerous for liverpool to get too downbeat because it came down to that one moment. what can i say? it was a game changer. 0ne moment. what can i say? it was a game changer. one man down, i'm sorry, but i couldn't believe we have no chance any more. i thought there was still something to come in there was still something to come in the second half and that was not the biggestjoy for any the second half and that was not the biggest joy for any liverpool fan andi biggest joy for any liverpool fan and i am sorry for this but this is and i am sorry for this but this is a big lesson today and we had to ta ke a big lesson today and we had to take it. a fewer people will be reassessing title challenges. let's look at the champions at leicester today. very impressive. the chelsea manager will be the happier man, leicester of course had that mad season a couple of years ago but he scored against his old club, with morata scoring his third in four games and jamie vardy pulling one back from the penalty spot. but chelsea marching on with three wins in europe for the blues. we had definite to improve improve the scoreline but i think it was a good result and performance, after the international break it is not easy because players come back very late and to play the game in eight few days is not simple so we are delighted for the performance. before the international break, chris, the headlines were doom and gloom at arsenal after being thumped by liverpool and it was all the old alexis sanchez transfer speculation, he is still there and arsenal winning. arsenal winning, a bit of a free hit against bournemouth. low winds, no points, one goal in four games. two goals for danny welbeck. a 3—0 win, minimal fuss goals for danny welbeck. a 3—0 win, minimalfuss against a goals for danny welbeck. a 3—0 win, minimal fuss against a team that are really struggling. arsenal fans will be pleased alexis sanchez was brought on off the bench. he was brought on off the bench. he was brought on off the bench. he was brought on at the same time as giroud. we have a good performance defensively and offensively and that is what we needed. the bad performance carbon last time and the real test is how you respond. we are in a privileged position with all the feeds coming in and i was watching what was going on at everton. harry kane's 100th watching what was going on at everton. harry kane's100th goal watching what was going on at everton. harry kane's 100th goal for the club but it was an absolute flu ke. we owed on the right—hand side, crossed the ball broke into the corner. they added another two goals after that. for us it is to build our performance, for us it is to build our performance , oui’ for us it is to build our performance, our game, to build confidence it is so important. the result will help us a lot to go to wembley on wednesday to play against dortmund. now all is clear, the transfer window is finished, no we start to build the positive dynamic. we saw southampton‘s first defeat at watford, they are going great guns. under this man, marco silver who seems to have transformed them. they have not lost this season. a really impressive win away at southampton, never an easy place to go but this looks a very different watford team from the one last season. the was sacked manager at the end of the season sacked manager at the end of the season but i am not sure if they continue like this they be sacking this one. lam happy. this one. i am happy. we were ready for everything they can do and our players understand and work really hard. they enjoy it and i saw them enjoy it and now is the moment to re st enjoy it and now is the moment to rest and prepare because it is only three points, good three points but only three points. we will move on to brighton, real fears there was something of a wake—up call coming into the premier league but they got that brought just before the international break and what a win against west bromwich albion. seven points from their first three games for west bromwich albion at brighton police stunned them today. their first ever brighton police stunned them today. theirfirst ever premier brighton police stunned them today. their first ever premier league win and theirfirst their first ever premier league win and their first win their first ever premier league win and theirfirst win in the their first ever premier league win and their first win in the top flight and their first win in the top flight for more than 30 years. remarkable stuff. the third goal... year is the brighton manager. we thoroughly deserved it. also the scoreline reflected the game, we we re very scoreline reflected the game, we were very good from the first moment. they were always going to put us under pressure and somewhat nervous in that last period of the game once they get the goal but there was some really good performances. such goodwill behind him to get things right and keep brighton up. you can see apart from that chelsea result it was pretty one—sided. lots of goals and some really good ones to see tonight. that is what is happening at half—time. they have just started the second half at stoke. manchester united went behind. stoke behind. sto ke we nt behind. stoke went in front, the cross came in and he smashed the ball in, the first goal manchester united have considered all season. have a look at that. asa at that. as a striker you take them however they come. it is still one alljust in the second half. as it stands this is the top of the table, manchester united would be a head of city with that point but you can see how well watford are doing. manchester united have just scored so manchester united have just scored so all that will change and we will show you that later at 7:30pm. at the bottom of the table, some fixtures coming up. west ham are in all sorts of bother. west ham and crystal palace have yet to play so they will try and find their first to play so they will try and find theirfirst points. to play so they will try and find their first points. but bournemouth really worry me, they are the team i have followed all my life, where are they going to get their goals and they going to get their goals and the points? there you are. you are right up to date. and manchester united just taken the lead against stoke with a clear half and i were left in that game. let's bring you up to date in the scottish premiership, and aberdeen couldn't regain their lead at the top of the table after a nil—nil draw at hearts, so celtic are still top. motherwell beat kilmarnock for their third league win in a row. rangers were comfortable winners over dundee. and ross county drew with partick thistle. third placed stjohnstone held on for a 1—all draw with hibernian. in the championship, sheffield wednesday are taking on nottingham forest at hillsborough. wednesday took the lead in the 22nd minute, when this through ball found gary hooper. but their lead didn't last long, forest equalised just six minutes later through ben 0sborn. earlier today, cardiff lost their 100% record after a draw at fulham — they do remain at the top of the table though. leeds have moved up into second place after thrashing burton albion 5—0. and just the one goal for wolves against 10—man millwall. you can find all today's results, as ever, on the bbc sport website. still to come, rafa nadal into the us open final, aiming for a 16th grand slam title. and johnny peacock sails through his final race before this —— swapping spikes for sequence and the strictly dance floor. ijust want and the strictly dance floor. i just want one year for and the strictly dance floor. ijust want one year for me, you give your life to athletics. we've had two huge games in rugby union's premiership this afternoon — as bath beat double european champions saracens 31—21 at the rec. it was the perfect send off for departing head coach tabai matson, but there was less good news for leicester tigers who were beaten by northampton saints in the east midlands derby. tim hague rounds up both matches. there were some more scenic sites —— there are a few more scenic sites in by there are a few more scenic sites in rugby than basque's ground. and a few more intimidating opponents than saracens. they continued their form here, totally dominating. yet saracens had some serious talent on the bench and there are three lions all came on and help change the game. bound to 1a men and bone by a four points with the same amount of minutes remaining the scored twice to set up a sensational game. the east midlands derby had plenty to look up to, but not happen did their best against leicester with their best against leicester with the home side beginning the better. that try was followed by another what the england captain dylan hartley scoring the second. this is all good ahead of the autumn internationals. all good for saints. they lost 5a point in the season opener, their best player in that game got his reward now. the perfect cocktail for northampton that leaves a bitter taste in the most of their rivals leicester. you can find all of today's rugby union results on the bbc sport website. hull kingston rovers will be back in rugby league's super league next season after they sealed promotion with a 12—6 victory over widnes. this long—range try from winger ryan shaw was enough to secure their return to the top division after a one year absence. earlier warrington narrowly beat leigh centurions whilst salford comfortably defeated huddersfield. chris froome will be crowned champion of the vuelta a espana tomorrow after a supreme display of climbing on the penultimate stage of the race this afternoon. as spain's alberto contador won the stage, froome extended his lead and with tomorrow's stage into madrid being largely ceremonial, he'll become the first rider in history to win the tour and vuelta in the same year since the vuelta moved to a late summer start. ben croucher has more. it is over 2000 miles long, and it came down to these eight steep miles. it is the stuff of legend, the client so severe that some call it inhumane. but chris froome and his team have something superhuman about them. he was controlling the race behind the leader and one by one of his rivals limply slipped through his slipstream. he gave a devastating demonstration he is the best in the world, extending his lead to over two minutes. he fittingly finished alongside a team—mate and after three weeks of oilfinally team—mate and after three weeks of oil finally allowed himself a smile. he will become only the third rhayader to win the tour and the vuelta a espa na rhayader to win the tour and the vuelta a espana in the same year and confirmed his status as one of the best. we will we're looking forward to the first all—american women's final at the us open for 15 years. sloane stephens and madison keys will be on court at around 9 o'clock uk time — and whoever wins, it'll be their first grand slam title. earlier i spoke to our tennis correspondent russell fuller in new york — he told me that stephens and keys were great friends and it was difficult for the crowd to choose a favourite. i think whoever wins tonight there will be lots of excitement in the usa in tennis circles because these are two players with the potential to perhaps not dominate in the way serena williams has but certainly when more than one grand slam. sloan stevens is 2a, the last couple of yea rs have stevens is 2a, the last couple of years have gone quite so well after a fast start, partially due to injury after missing one year due to foot surgery. madison is 22, she has immense power. she will be the attacker and stevens the defender so you have this fascinating contrast of style. and the men's final and what happened in the semifinal overnight, it is rafa nadal is for the taking, isn't it? he is definitely be favourite. anderson has done brilliantly to come through from this very open bottom half of the draw and he is playing well but people have deeply at the very top of his game and cope with extra pressure of appearing in his first grand slam final fp is to bea his first grand slam final fp is to be a full. ina year be a full. in a year that has been very much about the renaissance of roger federer, should rafa nadal trial it will be his 16th grand slam title, his third us open title, he is still hot on the heels of further. if rafa nadal wins itjust keeps this story running nicely. he is injury prone and we do not know what the future holds but the way he has played make you think he absolutely has the power to add to his grand slam tally on pretty much all services. —— services. the top—seeded pair of jamie services. —— services. the top—seeded pair ofjamie murray and martina hingis have won the mixed doubles title. the victory ta kes mixed doubles title. the victory takes murray's grand slam tally to five. some of the world's top athletes took on britain's best at the great city games in newcastle—upon—tyne this afternoon. the event climaxes with the great north run tomorrow, with mo farah on the roads for the first time since his retirement from track racing. this is a sign off for the 2017 season for many athletes. including jonnie peacock — the two—time paralympic champion is taking a break from athletics, to compete in strictly come dancing. he signed off with a comfortable win in the tm; 100 metres, and explained why he's taking time out. we had three big gears and less was the one i look back to try and take a mental break and have a bit of fun. you get your life to athletics for seven or eight years, ijust wa nt for seven or eight years, ijust want one year to myself for a bit and then i will come back next year and then i will come back next year and do it again. stoke have equalised against manchester united. we will have an update on that at 7:30pm. but that is all for now. now it is time for the weather. we will see you soon. time for the weather. we will see you soon. ijust you soon. i just liverpool had you soon. ijust liverpool had equalised against manchester city at some point! but back to the weather, which was in two minds. there was some sunshine to be have amongst the showers but if the court was sure was used in knew all about it. there you see the extent of the showers fought the latter part of the afternoon, some already fading and that continues later on tonight to lead clear skies and quite a cool night, particularly in the countryside. the showers take a while to clear and temperatures dip in northern ireland and scotland because later on the closed doors over later in the night to pick them up over later in the night to pick them up but in the east could see temperatures down to four celsius. a cool start on sunday. decent sunny spells. make the most of them in central and eastern parts because later in the day more cloud appears and quite later in the day some rain. some showers before the main rain. some showers before the main rain later on which is scotland will see quite a lot of rain and the bodies. as the guys in the sport we re bodies. as the guys in the sport were saying, great north run. the longer you are on the course of the more likely the rain will move in and eventually catch up with you. it will take its time so if you are very quick about proceedings you might get away with a dry race but i don't think many of us will get away with a dry bay, especially in scotla nd with a dry bay, especially in scotland and northern ireland. 0nce the weather front moves through there is lots of showers coming along and the noticeable wind. slowly but surely that whether using it we ever further eastward, completing the journey at this time tomorrow evening. notice the number of isobars here, sunday into monday we could seek some gusts from the bristol channel area up to 60 mph. low pressure very much a dominant feature through sunday and into monday also, plenty of showers. tuesday the showers tend to dry for the most part although later in the day we see more cloud into northern ireland. quite a bit going on, not all good. keep you up—to—date on here and on the bbc website. try this the headlines at 7pm. hurricane irma pounds cuba with winds of more than 150 miles per hour. the cuban authorities did try to move large numbers of people out of harms way, but still, many have been left, particularly in the central province of camaguey. we understand there are many thousands of people there without power at the moment. as the casualty toll mounts, it's confirmed five people have been killed in the british virgin islands, another person died in anguilla. as the storm approaches florida, governor rick scott gave a stark warning to residents that they must seek shelter. in other news:
